Class is pretty challenging, need to attend lectures and read the textbook. Aplia(homework system) is extremely useful for understanding the material. Lectures are interesting and examples are fairly helpful
is is very clear i give him that. He also tells you what you need to know for a test. But when it comes to the test, boy is it hard. also Aplia, omg i hate it, he doesnt teach you all you need to know for it so you better read the book!
Lang is very clear and in my book, he's an enjoyable lecturer. Aplia is absolutely terrible though. He has not set up a very good curriculum... Class and tests are one thing, but homework is consistently puzzling. If you take 100 from him, give yourself a LOT of time to do the assignments.
He makes class interesting and fun. HIs test are difficult and are made to push your limits. Homework is mandatory. The textbook is not needed at all. One of my favorite teachers at Davis.
The materials in class and tests are total different things. All the stuffs i could learn are from the TA.
I admire Professor Lang. He has successfully tailored this course to his own unique personality. Ex) he uses the Aplia homework so he doesn't have to create hw problems, even though Aplia has very little relation to the lecture. Occasionally, he will not show up for office hours. Exams mostly resemble notes, but he offers very few examples.
lang is unpreferable if there are better perfect substitutes for your class; aplia HW(hard)doesn't complement lectures & textbook; doesn't provide any resources besides lectures so mandatory to go. smug, lazy, seems insincere about helping students. exams can be tricky and vary in difficulty which i don't get. curves are weird. exams 25%(3)HW25%
Useless
worst ever, seriously. take him and youll see what i mean. best way to get a good grade in his class is to attend another professor and just take his midterms.
He doesn't show any interest in his students. He doesn't care if you pass or fail or if he even manages to teach you anything. He has ridiculous HW assignments that can only be answere by reading the book, and if you ask him to help he'll refuse. Tests were VERY far from what he teaches. He teaches you very simple ideas, but his test are NOT SIMPLE
doesn't care about his students. full of himself. won't give extra examples. impossible online homework that doesn't relate to lecture or tests. book doesn't help. don't take him.
i don't know why everyone seems to not like him, he is possibly my favorite teacher so far. you HAVE to go to all the lectures and pay attention, but he is funny and teaches well so i didn't mind. the tests were easy if you paid attention in class. he made the material seem incredibly simple and easy to understand, which is a great feat for a prof
Gives incredibly hard tests. Explains material like its really easy but when it comes to midterms - its hard. Aplia hw doesn't help, book - useless. All the help I could get was from my T.A.
He is BY FAR my favorite professor from the last two years at Davis. He explains everything very simply, and he is funny which keeps you interested. Go to class, sit in the front row, and do the homework. If you try your hardest on the homework, you'll do fine.
Aplia was way to hard, even an undergrad wasnt sure of all his answers. Dumb teacher just trying to make money of us by making us pay for aplia which he doesnt use on the test. only half the class attends. probably getting help from other teachers. Take him if you already know the concepts
He is my favorite Econ professor at Davis! If you go to class, take good notes, and study those notes well, you will do well. The hw isn't meant to correspond to his tests, but it is an easy way to boost your grade. He is funny, and makes 100 interesting.
Hands down best professor I've had thus far. Kinda sad being that he is a professor from CSUS. Show up and study lecture notes and you should do fine. Solid explanations of concepts in lecture. Not an easy subject to teach but he made it easy. Take his class!
Good professor for this course. He focused on topics that are econ related. The book was pointless though.
Good lectures, presents material clearly. Tests very difficult but curved. Online HW was mostly irrelevant but easy. Key to success is show up everyday and take good notes.
HW problems were much too difficult/time-consuming. His lectures are very clear and simple, but both HW and exams he expects you to know above and beyond what he lectures. A professor to avoid if you aren't interested in the topic.
Lang is a great lecturer. Funny, clear, and got me interested in game theory even when class was 8 am MWF. The hw isn't bad (only 2 sets) but the exams were way harder than expected.
The HW is different from the class notes and it seems as if he doesnt wanna answer questions outside of class.
He simply doesnt do anything outside of the class. All his homework are picked from the book, no notes, no ppt, no pdf. He rarely draw any graph or write any main pointd during the lesson. Basically u are on your own. I dont know why the school allow him to do that. He is simply sitting there and reading the book.
Take good notes, pay attention and show up to every class. He makes labor economics relatively painless with typical, but well placed, economist humor. I would take him again given a chance. Also chug a coffee before the exams, they are multiple choice but worded to be challenging.
The class is very interesting. His tests require you to be creative. if you do not know the material, this is not a good concept. However, he is handsome and is a fun teacher :)
He is horrible. His lectures seem very clear and make the material sound easy. BUT THE LECTURES DO NOT PREPARE YOU FOR THE TESTS OR THE HOMEWORK. TESTS ARE SUPER HARD. AVOID HIM!!!!
This instructor is VERY lazy and irresponsible. He only covers the surface level of materials and expects you to read further into it but does not clarify precisely where to extrapolate. Exams are thus confusing, hard, and do not relate back to his lectures or even the textbook. Do not take him, do not even laugh at his jokes and feed his pride!!
He explains things very clearly, but in regards to actually helping his students succeed in his class, he is terrible. His lectures covers the general points, not actually applications of the problems on the test or hw. Overall, the class is just terrible. The work put into this class does not reflect in the grade received.
His lectures are really clear, and he is trying to explain concepts in an easy way. The first two tests are not that hard if you fully understand what he taught during class. Go to his lecture, remember to take notes, and do some homework problems. Overall, its not hard to earn a good grade in his class.
This was one of the hardest classes I have ever taken. The lectures and homework do nothing to prepare you for the exams. Test questions had almost no relation to homework problems or lecture examples. Avoid this class if you can, as you will put in enormous amounts of work with little return when it comes to your grade.
Prof. Lang is very concise in his lectures. Make sure you go to class because he really clarifies exactly which topics to master for his tests. Unfortunately, his tests are extremely difficult, but that's what's gonna set you apart from the class when the curve comes around. I got a C- after studying really hard, and he curved the test up 20 pts.
If you have taken AP stats in high school you will be fine. most people fail his tests so the curve is awesome. if the average test grade is a 50 he will add 20 points to everyones grade so if you can earn a c without the curve, its money. lectures are useless but discussion wasn't bad. online homework's definitely help.
Pay attention in class and you'll do fine. He explains things well, tests are fair and don't try to trick you. You can literally ask him if something is on the test and he will say yes or no. Straight forward. Ask TA to teach you how to use your calculator. Hardest part was beating time in tests, but it's doable. HW=free points.Didn't use textbook.
This guy is hard. Im retaking STA13 for a masters program. This class is much harder than my other class. He is a good teacher but this is stats 13. At UCD it's known as an class that's supposed to be an easy. His homeworks took forever, like around 5 hours per week. The average of mid1 was 50%, mid2 70%. Doable but not worth it honestly
Prof Lang is a great professor. He's straight forward. Very clear. He's also kind of blunt in how he talks to students but if you're not overly sensitive - like most UCD students - you'll think he's pretty funny. Take his class. It's really not that hard and his curves are pretty generous.
The online homework takes hours and is not similar to exam questions. Exams are kind of tricky and you are definitely crunched for time. The notes seem simple but the tests are very difficult.
He is one of the hardest professors at UCD and has a awful, rude personality. I am a A student and I failed his class, so that says something. STEER CLEAR. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.
Avoid him!!! His test is horrible
Okay he's hilarious because he has a huge ego, but this class is really hard for an intro class. The first midterm had a 50 average and the second had a 70. That being said, he curves generously. The homework is nice for the points but takes literally FOREVER to do, and it isn't relevant on the tests. Loved him, just not so much the class.
He was a clear instructor, but it was a hard class. As I had no previous stats experience, I struggled. His final curve was not helpful at all. Hard class. =(
He was a clear instructor, but it was a hard class. As I had no previous stats experience, I struggled. His final curve was not helpful at all. Hard class.
It was hard and the final curve was terrible.
. Honestly, Prof Lang is an amazing teacher who is overly generous in terms of grading. He gave gracious curves that I felt were unneeded. The questions were straight forward on the second test and the final. Anyone with basic math skills should do fine. Amazing teacher and I plan to take more courses from him! He also told us what was on the tests
Teaches a difficult class very well. Having prior stat knowledge will help you through the class, but attending class, taking notes, and looking through the book really helps. He has a big ego, which may turn some people off but he is a good teacher overall. Gives a very nice curve
Didn't use a textbook. Lecture consisted of formulas written on the chalkboard and brief explanation. Didn't learn much from this class and didn't like his teaching method. Does not give practice exams!
Took this class during Spring 2013. Spent the first 5 weeks learning and reviewing stuff from STA13. Course is pretty evenly split. The other 5 weeks were spent learning regressions which in itself isn''t the hardest thing to do. As a teacher he''s ehh but his workload made it easy to gain back points lost from tests. B or B+ is doable.
His lecture is okay. yeah i mean okay but he is too lazy to post anything on Smartsite He tried once, but he failed to do so. Then, he gave up so we did not have anything to study before midterm or finals except for notes and textbook. BTW, he will CURVE DOWN your grade I got 94 and 86 on midterm and 82 on finals (each 33%) but only got a B
Great guy, snide remarks all day long about everything, quite entertaining if you have the intellect to catch his drift & quite funny and entertaining if you don't catch it. I felt he was great, but I am a Statistics major & not to be immodest but pretty good at it as well. Fun class, hw is a blast and many times not what were even doing in class.
He's so fun and full of energy! I kept thinking all semester why does he have so much time on his hands. LOL! I strongly suggest keeping up with your blackboard because he POST EVERYTHING!!! Did I mention how he has the best smile and dimples EVER!
This was a great class. I didn't expect much and got more than I bargained for. Tests really challenge your understanding of the material and nothing will be handed to you, but there's lots of opportunity for extra credit. It does't hurt that this guy is eye candy & I went to lectures just hoping he'd flash a smile (I'm just saying). Great class!
Test is easy but you must be careful to receive an A. Curve doesn't help so much.
Lots of online homework that takes up a lot of time if you don't know what you're doing. His lectures are clear usually, but sometimes he skims through difficult topics and explains easy topics. Which makes having a good TA very important. Exams are MCQs and their difficulties vary. Sarcastic and fun to listen to. Helps that he's an eye candy, too.
MAKE SURE TO DO ALL THE HOMEWORK. I did pretty bad on the tests (Two D's on the first midterms) and then received a B on the final and homework all added together to a C+ in the course. The class is doable if you put the time and effort into it. The tests are nothing like the homework however so make sure you study.
Honestly the hardest class I ever taken. Did all the homework, went to all the discussions but sill ended with a c- in the class. He's pretty clear in lecture.
Lecture notes are unclear. It would be helpful if he wrote out the problem before jumping into working it out. Exams are hard! He doesn't really have office hours unless its by "appointment only." The exams are completely different than the lecture notes and the homework is on line which takes HOURSSS to complete!
You'll never be tested on something that isn't in the notes, book, or hw. One Quiz that is all free response, 2 entirely multiple choice midterms, and a multiple choice final. I got an A taking it over summer after just having taken ECN 1B, which may have made it easier, but if you really utilize all the resources you can do well. Decent curve.
His lectures seem clear, but lectures, homework, and tests are not always related. Problems done in lecture are much simpler than homework problems, which are easier than test problems. 2 midterms, a lot of online homework, and final.
Prof. Lang talks tough on the first day just to scare you, but ends up being a great professor. Lectures are clear and follow the text. Online textbook and homework assignments thru smartsite. Textbook chapters are short and to-the-point, so reading isn't a huge deal. Tests can be challenging, but are fair. Homework, 1 Quiz, 2 MT, 1 final.
He's pretty clear and good at explaining the material, but since he's usually at Sac State, he had no office hours. He gives you a note card and calculator and a multiple choice exam, and for the final he told us the type of problems on the exam.
When I first signed up for his class I was worried because of all the negative reviews on this website. However, I really enjoyed this class. The professor is extremely funny and makes lectures fun going to. The exams are definitely tough; if you attend all his lectures, pay attention, and study for the finals they shouldn't be too hard.
I found statistics to be harder than any science class ive taken, and im finishing up CHE 2, BIS 2, and PHY 9 series. you have to put in a lot of effort for this class to understand the concepts so don't slack off.
Lang was such a great professor! The class is fairly easy, it was really basic. There was quite of bit of homework online but it was pretty straightforward. If you do the homework and understand it the tests will be pretty easy!
The lectures were fantastic. Lang is funny, while at the same time being clear and getting through all the material he needs to. He is strict but fair in grading, and you really do need to be at lectures (even if they aren't mandatory). As far as the class, ECN 1B was a basic intro course, and easy as expected (if you pay attention).
His lectures are clear and easy to understand. The two midterms were both straight forward. As long as you take good notes and be familiar with the problems he presented in class, you will do well. He is sarcastic, responsive to emails, and doesn't really connect with the students. Make sure to understand regression for the final.
He is the worst math professor. Gives homework unrelated to anything else in course. Tests are way harder than anything he teaches in class. Does not give practice exams. If you have never taken calculus before, it is almost hopeless to pass this class.
I'm not too good at math I got a C+ in 17A. He's not the best lecturer but he doesn't expect much on the tests.
Prof. Lang is a horrible. Tests are way harder than examples he teaches in class. Does not do any problems outside of his notecard. No practice exams. First midterm was multiple choice so no partial credit. Complained to math department so the rest of midterms are free response with partial credit. Hard to pass this class if never had calculus.
This class was easy, not because the material was, but rather because Professor Lang was so amazingly clear about what would and would not be on the test. There were no surprises-- only material taught in lecture appeared on tests (and he told us if something wouldn't be on there-- no wasted study time!). I would take a class with him again.
Pros: -easy to fair exams -VERY clear on what you need to know -doesn't dwell on high math theory (which is unnecessary for 17 series) -homework!! HELPS YOUR GRADE!! -Lectures are easy to follow Cons: -gives TAs full power/freedom on grading exams and they can grade exams harshly and unfairly OVERALL, HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!
If you are taking the 17 series I would recommend anyone but him. At first the relaxed teaching of only the operations seems like a nice break, but this will screw you over for the rest of the series. He teaches you the minimum and assigns homework with things he didn't teach. Be prepared to do outside research. Tests may be multiple choice as well
Ended up with a B because I skipped class nearly all the time. Be aware that there's a good chunk on each test about stuff he only talks about during class. The times I did attend he was hilarious and his lectures are very clear. He covers only the basics in class so be prepared to put effort outside the class and in homework to get a good grade.
Yes his tests are straightforward, but he has no knowledge of calculus. Asked him a homework question once and he referred me to the calculus room. Pretty condescending too. I suggest taking only if you have prior calculus exposure, or else you'll have a hard time like me. There's also little to no partial credit on tests.
Honestly, the hw isn't that bad. It actually helps your understanding. If you understand and do the hw on time, then you will do well in the class overall. Attendance isn't necessarily mandatory but if you skip class you'll end up falling behind and being lost. 80% of success in his class is p much showing up and paying attention to his lectures
He was very funny and hilarious on his class. every time in the class you seem like understand everything. however, his teaching only cover parts of homework and test. The online homework is not that easy because many of them are not be taught in the class.
Actually, Economics is not that hard because it's belong to social sciences field which students are familiar with. And in the class you will fell like you understand everything that you've learned. However, his questions were so hard in the test. what he wants the class average GPA is 75.. so ridiculous! YOU NEED TO STUDY BY YOURSELF ACTUALLY.
Profesor David does a great job explaining in lecture, however it has nothing to do with the homework and midterm. This can become overwhelming and tedious.
Professor is funny and makes stats a little more enjoyable. Tests are fair, but you learn shortcuts on the calculator to ensure that you will finish in time. Homework is time consuming and doesn't relate to lecture, but do well on it because easy points.
Professor Lang is clear in his lectures and pops jokes to keep it lively. However, when it came to midterms, for me at least, the material that was covered in class wasn't everything that was on the midterms. I struggled in this class all quarter, ironically being my hardest classes despite being my GE and taking engineering courses. Would not rec
Hardest class I've ever take in ucd. He only summaries what he thinks important parts of the chapters, but you still need to spend a lot of time reading textbook at home . The lecture notes is not enough to prepare for the tests. He only responsible for teaching, but doesn't care you understand materials or not. Sounds like is not his business
In STA 13, Lang gives great in-class notes that are necessary for the test. The book is online and the homework pertains to the book, not the in-class notes. The tests weren't really that bad (he curves) and similar questions are easily found online. DO THE PRACTICE EXAMS AND LOOK OVER MIDTERMS FOR THE FINAL- they have a lot of the same questions.
He has good lectures and gives out homework that are long but easy points! He's pretty funny and he curves a lot. Midterms and final were pretty easy and had a lot of the same questions on the practice tests. The only thing that sucked was having him at 8AM.
Excellent professor. He responds to emails very quickly, even on weekends and breaks. Very accessible for help. No practice exams given, but very straight-forward based on lecture material and some homework. Homework took a long time but was for the best (helps on exams).
His lectures are NOT mandatory, but I highly recommend to go. His 1test(written)/3exams(Multi-choice) are based on his lectures. He follows a book and his lectures summarize the important key information that he likes and creates a test question around it. Write good notes, heck you should record him too because he doesn't post anything online.
If U have the chance. TAKE IT!!! watch a new movie every week. Gives you a week to type a ONE page paper regarding any economic concepts you noticed. Group project on a movie stock market. Group paper at the end. If your papers are just gibberish he will call you out in his notes. Funny guy, always had good jokes. Great Selection of movies!
Super easy class and prof. Required online textbook and homework. 1 quiz, 2 midterm, 1 final. Must go to class to get notes, but book is thorough and material is VERY basic. If you put in an ounce of effort you will get an A. Lang is a great professor and is clear and straightforward. Definitely consider him for intro to econ.
I really enjoyed Prof. Lang as a teacher, he is hilarious and a pretty solid teacher, but in order to get an A in this class you need to put in a lot of effort and read the book (for people who have never taken any econ class before). I never had taken micro or macro prior to this class and i got a B.
Took this guy Winter 2016, and he made me hate calculus. I didn't take MAT17B again until Fall 2016 and had no regrets dropping Lang. Seriously, he did not show any compassion for that class and bragged about his stats class when he was supposed to be teaching calc. No partial credit for multiple choice exams, and discussion sec lacked organization
HATE HIS CLASS! HE think he is funny, but doesn't explain anything! Masked the test harder than what he actually cover is class!
First he doesn't give out any practice midterm and no solution to any hw or exam. Second he has no rubric to the project. Absolutely an awful class.
Be prepared to work. No material is given outside of lectures. Nothing is posted online and he will not answer any questions if he has already mentioned it in lectures. As long as you do the homework and go to lectures and pay attention, you will do fine. The TA's were awful (their accents were incomprehensible). Overall an okay class.
The class consists of two midterms, three homework assignments and a final. He teaches well but doesn't provide practice tests or practice problems. His tests are multiple choice and they're not very hard but he curves if the averages are low.
His lectures are clear and concise as he stresses that the material he covers in class will only appear on his tests. There may be a lot of graded hw from the book and R-studio, but this can help buffer your grade. Overall he's a solid choice for STA100. Well recommended. Testing outlook: 2 midterms (25 mc) + Final (40 mc) no room for error
He is very clear and only gives you important material during lecture. However, if you have no background in statistics he is a horrible professor. He gives no appreciation for the material and does not explain the why behind doing things. If you have taken stats before it is not too difficult but if you haven't take someone else. R is annoying
This guy does not care about his students. Dont take your first quarter or else you'll be sad and not want to continue taking college classes. his tests are hard and theres no time to finish them.
This man is the funniest and the best stats professor you will ever have. He is very clear about what will be on his tests for it is exactly what he goes over in lecture. He doesn't post slides online so make sure to go to his lectures, but you will want to for he makes them enjoyable with his constant jokes and enjoyable personality.
Professor Lang was a hilarious teacher and he is clear about concepts but beware! He doesnt post lecture notes/podcasts online so attending is a MUST. If youre taking him for STA100/13, LEARN HOW TO USE A TI84. It will save you so much time on a test, rather than calculating each test statistic, confidence interval, and regression by hand.
Funny and great teacher. Assigns HW but to do well on tests, study and redo notes from class. Also, there is not enough time for tests, so he does curve. Some test questions can be time exhausting, so go through the ones you can do quickly first then do the time consuming ones last to get the highest grade possible.
His lecture is very interesting and you will like it. He gives a large amount of homework at first but soon he announces that he will not grade the homework. He has two midterms and one final. All of them are multiple choices. If you have a good calculator, the tests will be quite easy.
No HW, everything graded on midterm and final. I took notes, paid attention in class, did the HW, formed a study group. Midterm 1 was more fair because maybe 70% of the question related to class material. The final was a curve ball, because it literally asked us to solve problems we NEVER had practice or seen before. He curves the grade 7% at most
The class is an easy A if you know how to use your calculator for stat. Two midterms and one Final. Tests are straight-forward and are similar to the HW. Curve on each tests. Take Him!
Not a bad class-5 quizzes and a final. We get to use cheat sheets and discussion & HW is not mandatory. BUT he is not organized. He is not there at quizzes and there is a lot of cheating. AND I haven't gotten a quiz back from 3 weeks ago. We've had quizzes since I'm getting frustrated. As a teacher he is fairly good and chill
Easy problems in class but problems are hard af on quizzes
Overall, I enjoyed this class. Dr. Lang is a very funny and engaging lecturer. He makes the material seem very understandable and straightforward... until you see his quizzes, which are significant more difficult than in class example problems. He is responsive to email and curves no more than 7% (usually to a 74-76). No homework, no textbook
I asked if the book could be put on reserves in the library, then he proceeds to forward the class a link to the bookstore red shelf site. Not what I initially asked for and had to shell out $45 for a book that I didn't need. He is decent at teaching, but his quizzes are a lot harder than the material presented. Overall professor rating of a C-.
He's a decent choice for STA100. 5 quizzes, lowest one dropped. Learn to use a TI-83 or 84 as it will make quizzes a lot easier and reduces room for error. Quizzes are a bit tougher than lecture examples are, but if you practice enough your calculator will do the exams for you. Again: learn to use a calculator to succeed in this course!
Want to take a class and never know what to study but be given hard questions on exams that are worth all your grade with TA's who don't even understand how the professor is teaching the material? If yes then take Lang's class. He teaches his own way and provides no way to see if you actually understand what is being taught. Awful uncaring teacher.
ugh all I have to say after taking this class is frustration!!! The quizzes were fine but then he drops the final on us that was like nothing we've done in class or any of the quizzes... probably could've done just as well on it had I not even taken the course. Don't put yourself through this :(
Professor Lang is a funny guy. Don't get me wrong, he's chill, but that final we had this quarter made me walk out thinking that my last 10 weeks has gone down the drain. I went into the final with an A+ and came out with a B+. Learn how to really use your graphing calculator and you'll pass fine. He curves but not enough to recommend him to others
Bruhhh the final wrecked me! I actually really enjoyed Lang's class and having him as a professor; I thought he was a solid, funny teacher until I got to the final. I took AP Stats and know this material WELL, and the final (50 long & hard MC qs unlike anything I've ever seen) still brought my A+ down to B+. He showed no sympathy for my health prob
Had Lang for both STA013 and STA100, The only bio terminology you'll see is in the homework, otherwise he teaches lecture for both classes exactly the same. Great lecturer, go to class. 5 quizzes one gets dropped, you get an index cheat sheet for each and a whole page for final. Total quiz grade B+, the final dropped me to a C+. BEWARE OF FINAL
Lang is an amazing professor! Your entire grade is based on the midterm & final, but if you take good lecture notes & do the homework problems, you will be fine! His lectures are amazing & he really cares that his students understand the material. The homeworks are ungraded, however I would recommend doing them if you want to do well on the exams.
This professor knows how to educate! Though he gives horribly hard tests to separate good and bad students, his decent curve gives every student best score he/she can get! Only one drawback is that he never writes down detailed notes, so your good listening matters.
Lang is a great professor and is really passionate about Economics. Make sure you pay attention because he doesn't write down much or do presentation slides! Grade was based off a quiz, Inquizitive homework, two midterms, and a final. Exams were hard but as long as you study you should pass (he curves). Loved this class.
He's a really funny guy. He talks about a lot of information in the book so it helps to show up to class since he does not test you on anything he has not already talked about. Tests are hard, but he curves A LOT so it evens out. Sometimes things not discussed in lecture or harder problems will be on test but you just need to do better than others
Lang tries to intimidate students in the beginning to separate those who really want to succeed in the class. He gives really great feedback on your work. So long as you put in the time and effort needed, he will reciprocate the same energy. Great teacher, very witty and smart remarks to keep you on your toes. Overall great professor!
It doesn't matter how much you apply yourself in this class, your chances of doing well on his tests(which make up more than 80% of your grade) are probably slim unless you truly, genuinely, whole-heartedly understand econ. He presents the material in the most simple manner and then the hw and test comes along and you're left confused and hopeless
Lang's tests are always ridiculously hard but he curves generously. I took labor econ & game theory with him over the summer. He has a sarcastic and jaded lecture style that's funny at first but can get old. He relies heavily on the TAs and isn't available outside of class. Most classes are 1 MT and 1 final with HW being optional or very low weight
I don't know why professor Lang got such a low grade. Think about your curve score? Are you embarrassed? To be honest, professor Lang's lecture is easy to understand and the exam content is very simple. If you come to the lecture, you can easily get good grades.
5 quizzes, 1 dropped - 1 final. The final was hard because it relied on you having to problem solve your way through it. The questions are worded in a way that makes it difficult to solve or set up, but is not drop-dead hard. Lang is a funny teacher but he is not a great one. Quizzes were okay, based on the lectures. HW does not correlate to quizs
Worst teacher I've had at davis. He basically teaches you easy material and tests you on hard material. The quizzes were okay but the final, oh my, I have nightmares about it. It is polar opposite of what we were taught in class. The final will drop your grade a whole letter grade. I'd avoid taking him if you value your gpa.
The lecture examples & homework problems (optional) don't correlate to the material on the quizzes. He repeatedly received emails complaining about this; however, he did nothing to fix the issue. Falsely stated that we would have more than enough time to finish the final, but mostly gave us time-consuming calculations. Words all exams confusingly.
His graders are tough graders; he makes the material seem easy in lectures but the exams are harder and youll run out of time very fast. Use a TI-83 or up calculator and youll have better chances to not mess up results on exams. Lectures not recorded so make sure you make some contacts to ask for notes if you miss a class. Grades solely on exams
From the beginning, Uncle Dave makes his expectations clear. He gives you the basic tools to understand stats, and leaves it to you to master them, as any other professor would. Like in any math class, doing practice problems is the best way to study for quizzes/final. He is a very good lecturer and makes clear what will and wont be on the exams.
Lang is a decent lecturer, quizzes are a little more challenging than what is said in lecture, you get an index card for the quizzes and a full double sided paper for the final. Final was hard, I think what really helped me get a decent grade was using my ti-84 since its MCQ. So learn to how to use it throughout the whole quarter!
He is a hilarious professor. Lectures are not heavy at all, but you have to come to class since he does not post any lectures online. 5 quizzes and drop the lowest, and those quizzes are harder than your lectures. Make sure you read those questions carefully. Final is multiple choices, Learn how to use 84 TX it helps you a lot
Lectures are good however, he has a tendency to define concepts then expects you to be able to mathematically solve it on the quiz without teaching you how. Hard to prepare for quizzes when the examples and homework are 10x easier. Expect to have your opinions invalidated when you discuss your issues with him. Didn't even show up on exam days.
5 quizzes and a multiple choice final. The lowest quiz score is dropped. Homework is optional, but it's honestly a waste of time since it doesn't even correlate to the quizzes. He made all the quizzes way more difficult than any of the examples he gave us in class. We didn't even have enough time to finish the final despite what he stated.
OK choice for a stats professor. Hilarious/informative lectures. Does not give you resources to succeed though. HW problems won't help you here. Graded by quizzes/final which are harder than lecture problems. All it takes are tiny mistakes that'll cost you a good grade, so be careful! Lang will either be a hit/miss for different people.
Professor Lang is amazing with great senses of humor. Homework were not graded but they are helpful. 5 midterms and you get to drop a lowest one. Final was probably the hardest but doable if you prepare a lot.
A small mistake can cost you 20 points or more. I feel that I only did well because I took stats at my community college before coming here and my old stats teacher taught me how to use a TI84. PLEASE learn how to use it. I wouldve failed the final if I didn't know quick stats functions but instead I got an 85/100. Rely on lectures, not homework.
Prof. Lang gets right into the topics and does relevant examples. A simple question or two can stretch for the whole class, which helps since he really tries to hammer each and every step into you so that you get it. The homework only sometimes reflected the exams, but his in-class examples are about what you'd expect in the exams.
The midterm is 50 minutes for 50 questions. It is difficult to complete if you spend too much on one single question. He doesn't provide anything except his short notes
The midterm is super crazy hard!!!
Really disrespectful ; The Internet crash down is not our fault
Please understand, however, that the final exam will go on as scheduled and in a similar format. If your dog eats your internet that day, or your computer explodes, or your neighbor is using up the bandwidth, or Davis has only cold hotspots, whatever is earned on the final will be used to calculate your grade. Most disrespectful prof I ever met
the test is heavy as 50minues for 50 multiple choice, If there are irresistible factors that make the exam impossible(not a single person, but most), the professor will take your difficult situation as an excuse.
Worst professor at UCD.
The final was extremely hard and there was no enough time to finish the whole exam. Just aviod him.
All you need to do is go over lecture recordings as I find being able to pause and go back helped extremely. The material is kinda dense but it is understandable if you listen closely and go over it a few times. Take good notes as they can help greatly for exam prep, overall his test are hard but come with pretty good curves so class isn't to bad.
I took this class over the summer with a TA and had to retake it. Professor Lang does an amazing job of explaining everything, and I think his exams were fair as long as you pay attention and do practice problems. His lectures are entertaining so even though it's kinda heavy stuff, I learned a lot and the course wasn't too terrible this time.
For the finals, you have to complete a 4-hour exam in essentially 2 hours. Doesn't matter how well versed you are in the material, doesn't matter how fast you can finish the problems. It is not humanly possible to finish the final. On top of that, you cannot go back and change your answers. The exam is locked to only the current question.
No one finished the final. No one. He constantly says that exams are based on lectures, yet the questions are miles beyond what he has taught. The final is made in such a way that even if you studied hard and know the material, it doesn't matter. There are so many questions and so little time. You will not finish the final.
The final will drop your grade. No one finished even half of it. The 40 questions take 4 hours minimum, and we are given 2.
You will spend the darkest 2 hours of your life doing the final.
Dope lecturer really cool material that's relevant to real world. The final was brutal but besides that one of best courses you can take at Davis.
STAY AWAY, that's all I have to say. He has already gained notoriety in the Math Department. The negative reviews below tell the truth, do not take this guy. He is extremely unreasonable, and rude.
One of the worst professors I have ever met in my first years at UCD. I watched his recording, and got lower score comparing with just reading the textbook by myself. NOT responsive at all. Never reply my email. Even forgot to record one lecture when there are lots of students in diff. time zone in his class. DON'T TAKE!!! MITOpenCourse is better.
Lord, never before have I encountered a professor who is so arrogant AND lazy in my entire four years of higher ed. His notes suck, his lectures suck, the book is NOT relevant to the material or what is on the tests, and I have reason to believe he doesn't care. Save that stuff for State, Lang, we're trying to get somewhere here.
So rude, avoid him. Every bad review is true
Relative to other professors at UCD, Lang does the bare minimum. His lectures can be good, but he provides absolutely no resources to prepare for exams, with Canvas resembling a desert. He relies heavily on TAs, and is often unwilling to do some of the most basic things for his students. Very inflexible. Without a doubt, take someone else.
His lectures were very hilarious, kept me awake for an 8am class. However, his exams were super hard. I got 99% in the end so it was doable, but I worked very hard to get to that grade. He dropped the lowest quiz and curved grades if the overall performance was low. Textbook needed to do homework. No recording/slides so you should attend lectures.
Worst professor by far. Hw that is worth a good chunk of your grade is not at all related to lecture; quizzes are not related to any hw or any lecture. Your grade is in the hands of the TAs and they all grade differently so there are always inconsistencies. Lang may be charismatic but he does not give you the resources to pass this class.
Never have I ever taken a class with such self-entitled peers. Class average was an 85%, and people on Discord were throwing vitriol at the man. Here's the hard truth: The class is extremely easy. It is curved. You need a calculator. The TAs grade, not him. Lang himself is clear, straightforward, funny, and organized. Couldn't ask for better.
If you pay attention in class and write down all his examples, you will be fine. There were 5 quizzes that were open note and based off his examples in class. If the averages were bad, he always made sure to curve. Homework was difficult at times and not really relevant to lecture material, but thats what the TAs were for.
No midterms, only five quizzes and a final worth 100 points. He curved quizzes and final to 80% if he noticed people did bad. Quiz questions are the next level of homework questions. The final was not that bad, know how to use a TI 84. He gives out unfair versions. Some people get easy quiz questions while others get harder quiz questions.
One of the most worthless classes taught by one of the worst professors I have ever had the displeasure of having. The online textbook or "smartwork" literally has wrong answers within it. Do not take this class or any classes taught by this professor. Absolute trash.
The worse professor. You know what I wouldnt even use the term professor. Has no humility or care for his students even for the ones sick with COVID 19 doesnt teach and the HW website is terrible. I would say if you have to take his please seriously reconsider your life choices. Stay far away you will seriously regret taking his class.
The professor is just reading the powerpoints and you're supposed to learn by yourself.
Worst instructor I have seen in UCD life. He is rude, strict on grading and the homework has only one attempt. He even make mistakes on graphing of the quiz. Never seen this kind of instructor, so don't take him. Nevertheless, you will be unlucky.
He gives lots of homework and there is only 1 chance to answer the homework questions.
Lecture, Test, Homework are not related at all!!! The professor doesn't even check the test or homework, he doesn't reply email and leav everything to the TAs. Hopefully I can pass this course. He makes this course hard for students even though this is just a elementay course.
I took Professor Lang's ECN1a last year, and it was so good that I am now taking his 1b class. He has a very consistent style throughout the quarter with a clear to the point lecture each class. He makes funny jokes along the way.
The professor is cool and straightforward. The only huge problem with him is that he does NOT provide any study guides and he also does NOT record the class, so you HAVE to go to class. The HW that he list does relate to the topic of the test but is NOT similar to his quizzes. His class is easy but you have NO material to study. 4 QZ, 1 F, 1 GR PJT
Besides Homework, no additional practice problems/practice exams or no recorded lectures/videos. Saving grace is that exams aren't that hard and are open notes.
Professor Lang is a cool as a person, but he does not teach very well. His lectures are just a repeat of the textbook chapters he expects everyone to read, and he doesn't go over new practice problems either. This class is basically self-taught, but fairly easy if you read the book and understand the concepts.
Professor Lang doesn't mess around, he tells you what you need to do to be successful in the class and the content of the class is not difficult. I appreciated that he gave extra office hours during class time. All quizzes and exams were open book. The only annoying thing was the group project, where everyone gets the same grade regardless
Honestly don't know where to begin. Davis himself is Meh, and the curve saved everyone in this class heavily, most of the 4 quizzes (1 dropped) were curved by 30 points. Also lets not forget that you have an project due at the end of the class worth 20% of your grade based on coding which you must learn on your own. Im sorry Davis im not a fan
Lecture, homework and tests are totally unrelated. Hope I will pass
Is kind of smug and arrogant. But as long AS LONG AS YOU READ THE TEXTBOOK CAREFULLY, should should get a B if not better in this class. A bunch of errors on quizzes but he gave points back to students so it didnt matter.
During the instructions and quizzes, you may think he is a tough grader. You may think you have the possibility to fail. However, after final you may find out that this kind of thought is wrong. It is because he may give a big curve at last.
Although his lectures were just read the presentation, he gave lots of curves on quizzes and final test. And he dropped two quizzes.
Although his lectures just read the presentations, he gave curves on all of his quizzes, and he dropped two quizzes. He gave many curves on the final.
Pros - good lectures that make content easy. Funny, open note class, & gives big curves (half the class ended in the A range). Cons - doesn't record lectures/post notes, no resources for studying (just recommended homework - no solutions), & final group project with R (only 4 possible grades:100, 93, 75, 0). quizes-30%, final20%, grp pjct 20%
Very funny guy who made lectures enjoyable. Four quizzes and one is dropped. Group project is a lowkey grade booster because average score is ~93%. Quizzes weren't too similar to the homework and practice; they really were testing your ability to think outside the box. Nonetheless, Lang made sure to curve when necessary. Solid prof
While attendance is not mandatory it is highly recommended to go because the slides are not posted and they give a summary of the chapter. Also, most of the information on the slides are going to be on the quizzes and final.
Mr. Lang is the goat. Has some of the best quotes to keep the class engaged. My Favorite is "get some junior mints as the good lord intended for us". He covers everything you will need to be prepared for the quizzes and finals.
Quizzes were okay, but they were not like the homework or practice problems he gave us. The curves he put on the quizzes were nice though. Everything was open-note which made it a lot easier. If you have already taken a stats course before, then you'll be set for this class. His final was also super easy
One good thing about this class was that he curved a lot when the average was low. There are no extra practice problems or any additional resources that will help you study for the exam. The homework that he assigned is not really helpful (skip it!). The main focus of his class is basically his notes and what he says during the lecture.
Phenomenal lecturer. Lang is great at explaining concepts, probably one of the best econ professors I've ever had. Though attending lecture is not mandatory, you must go as exam content reflects the topics gone over during lecture. You're graded on homework and 4 exams (1 dropped). Overall, had a great time learning from him. Would highly recommend
Love attending his classes, he's funny and explains concepts really well. Though attendance isn't mandatory, I highly recommend going to class as he doesn't post his notes. He clearly loves what he teaches and can explain concepts in simple words all while being light-hearted. Cool dude.
Cool professor. However, his lectures and hw are completely different. He doesn't go over on how to solve the equations during lecture. I literally self-taught myself YouTube was my best friend throughout the entire quarter. The only pro from this class is that he curves grades. Only take if you have a strong background in econ.
Awesome professor because he teaches well and he is hilarious. But be ready to do study because the economics department is not a easy grading department. Take him for macroeconomics!
Overall the class isn't too difficult if you're willing to put in the work. The lectures were largely concept based. For homework/ concept application, you are largely on your own. Office hours are your best friend for this class. Quizzes were an accurate reflection of homework and back of the book problems, not too bad if you study.
He cares abt his students but this class was ROUGH. If you took AP stats you can probs get >100% on tests - but avgs were LOW. NO resources/notes/recordings (even if you have accommodations). Never looked at my notes bc they were so unhelpful. You need to be super on top of things to do well in this class. SO MUCH HW. Final is MC. Lowest quiz drop.
Great professor. Get ready to study.
Difficult for those who haven't taken statistics before, but simple for those who have. Attendance isn't mandatory but the professor does not record or provide lecture notes. Skip class? You won't pass. Tons of weekly homework. Professor has a good sense of humor for those who can take a joke and won't get triggered.
He is a great professor. I am an idiot in math but get an A+!!! He did huge curves on quizzes and even the final(10-30%), and his lectures are well organized. He doesn't test students on things that he didn't teach in class, so just go to lectures and discussions even they are not mandatory.
He's a great professor and his lectures are easy to understand and fun to listen to. He gives a lot of examples to make sure students understand the concepts he teaches. Grade weights: 25% HW, 51% Quizzes, 24% Final. There are a total of 4 quizzes and he curves each of the quizzes (so some people end up with >100%) and gets rid of the worst score.
Only reads off his slides and doesn't really expand on any concepts. His tests are really hard if you don't study a lot. Final was not reflective of material learned in class and was very conceptual. He also does not provide study guides or any extra helpful material. Only good thing is that he curves, which he has to or half his class would fail.
Very nice professor. 51% of the entire grade is the quiz and 25% is homework and another 24% is final. He is willing to provide a curve. If you understand each slide, the quiz will not be hard for you(he even drops the lowest quiz score), final is a bit hard but still ok. TA discussion is not mandatory but very helpful. Amazing class
Lots of homework but the final is pretty easy.
Funny and cool guy. Lectures are kind of fast but the homework and tests are fair. Though, a little more self-studying is required to actually do good. Drops lowest quiz out of the four he assigns. Curves if he thinks it's necessary. Pretty good overall. Recommend having a decent background in microeconomics and algebra before this class though.
I enjoyed this class, in mathematics there are so many ways you can solve a problem and his tests are similar, for one question there might be more than one correct answer. However, if you understand the concepts it's not that hard, he curves his test if he feels like that. His finals was multiple choice questions and midterms were comprehensive.
Dr.Lang always gives us a very high curve, sometimes up to 20% which is so good since he can boost my grade to 100+ grade which is so helpful! Although his teaching might not be that clear, I'm so satisfied with his curve!
Lang makes his lectures interesting and will cover a lot of material in one class. There's 4 midterms and a final, one midterm get dropped. All midterms are done in the blue books, where you have to answer 10 questions free response, only the final is multiple choice. There's 2 hw for each chapter that are due right before the test.
don't take him. his lectures are useless, basically just reading of the slides he makes. 4 quizzes which are basically your midterms. we had quiz 4 right before the final. overall way too much stress for an ECN course. dont take him unless you want to fail.
Felt confident with homework only to be blindsided by tests. Lectures are filled with way too much information to fully comprehend. Quizzes seem to have information randomly picked from lecture. Attended all discussions and they weren't helpful in the slightest. Prof was snarky and encouraged sick students to show up.
I've had professor Lang for two courses. First economics and then statistics. He is the only professor I've had in college that humors his students in every class and cares about engaging his audience. Generous with curving.
I had him for stats (8 am); he always made the lecture interesting and made me laugh! he gives around 4 quizzes (cumulative and curved) and a final which are not too hard if you do the homework (homework is due once every 2 weeks) overall, amazing professor, and definitely recommend !!
an amazing professor. Would take any class with him again in an instant. Highly recommend.
Teaches at a very comprehensive pace.
Just make sure you do the work, the professor is pretty cool and chill. Does a great job explaining stuff, you just have to do the work. ECN 122 is probably one of the hardest classes in the department so goodluck
Prof did really well at simplifying seemingly complex topics. Lectures were helpful, and Prof was very funny. He can come off mean sometimes, but it's just his sarcastic humor. The textbook was more useful than lectures, it explained everything very thoroughly. I never went to lectures and just used the textbook, and I was fine. Pretty easy class.
Am terrible at math and somehow got an A bc of Prof Lang. Is super funny and makes class so enjoyable. 4 quizzes, 1 final (each one is super fair as he knows we are beginners). Go to lecture! He simplifies everything and is super straightforward about what will be on the quizzes. If math is not for you, take Prof Lang! Such a fair prof!
Funny guy, but quizzes were difficult because he doesn't cover everything in lecture. He doesn't record lectures or post any slides. Average on quizzes were bad and just overall not a helpful professor. Spent most of the class teaching myself the content. Would not recommend if you're already bad at math. Homework is excessive too.
The content in the lectures is very reasonable and not that difficult, compared to the book which contains a lot of complex topics that he allowed us to skip because he prefers to take his time and give us great examples for each concept versus rushing through everything. He allows a full page cheat sheet on exams. Just study, easy A
Best professor if you ask me, I also highly recommend this class. It was probably the most profound experience I've had here at my time in Davis. Lectures and material was very interesting and workload wasn't too much. Easily manageable
He made every concept super easy to understand and it's very well organized. Grade consisted of 4 tests and 1 final but questions were based off of lecture examples so go to lecture and take really good notes because he doesn't post them. Lowest test grade also dropped and he gives very generous curves, I got Bs on all tests but all curved to an A.
Lang is a good professor and explains things clearly. There were no curveballs on the quizzes, its all things he discussed. As long as you go to lecture and take good notes, you should be ok for the quizzes. He also curves generously and drops the lowest quiz. Going to class is key. I missed a lecture and fell behind. Stay on top of it, easy A.
I took this professor for ECN 151A and 152. 152 had a bit of a different format, as it was mainly student driven. Group of students had to lead the lecture everyday based off of readings done and was heavily essay based, but easy. 152 is more of a traditional lecture format with 4 tests being your total grade. Funny guy, great at explaining things.
He's funny and clear in explaining things. I looked at the textbook like twice the whole quarter; I mostly got the material from lectures and the discussion guides the TA's would post. Lectures aren't recorded btw, and he won't provide notes. There were online problem sets due every 2 weeks, they took me pretty long to finish.
Really great!! He has great lectures although he doesn't record. And the tests are completely doable. He also gives tons of curves even there is no need.
Don't take Lang. The whole course is based on 4 quizzes and 1 final. Quizzes are all free responses and final is multiple choice. Doesn't record lectures, and doesn't upload class notes or slides. He was very rude in emails, I ended up with a 69.8% and emailed him if there was anything I could to get it up to a C- and he said "Sorry, but no." Rude.
lectures same content as textbooks. 4 frq quizes one dropped. mc final. not hard if you study. will curve/add points if he thinks needed. ta discussions very helpful before quizes/final. lectures not recorded. got an A+ without any previous econ knowledge.
Loved the class and Lang! He made the hour-20 lecture fly by and made hard concepts understandable. Lang does not record lectures or post slides, not an issue for me but for some it was. However, I found it necessary to supplement lectures with the textbook which I think helped me on quizzes. If you study and put effort into this class its aneasyA
I had him for 122 and am currently taking him for 100A. His lecturing is, IMO, the gold standard. He's a fantastic prof, but does old-school 'chalk-talks'. Heads up, your overall grade is mostly from exams. He's overall one of the best professors I've ever had though, and his lectures are possibly the only ones that will stick with me post-Davis.
I think it was super easy as long as you understand the material and DEFINITELY go to discussions as they're very similar to quizzes. There are 4 quizzes, dops 1. HW is 25%. I love his way of teaching, he's very good at it. If you will study then take him, guaranteed A. Also huge on curves. However some people did pretty bad in his class idk why.
Professor Lang's midterms do not at all reflect what he teaches in class, but rather what the TA does during the discussion right before the exams, which are far far more complex than what he teaches in class. Likable guy, but quizzes are super hard. Would NOT recommend
There's 4 quizzes, 1 final, and HW. Both the homework and tests do not add up to what Lang teaches during class. I would take 100A with someone else.
Not a huge fan of this professor. There are 4 quizzes, 1 final, and Smartwork homework. I agree with some of the past reviews that he makes his quizzes and homework significantly harder than what he teaches in class. Kind of seems like a lazy way out for him and TA basically does all of the important teaching
Took Lang for principles where his teaching style is sufficient but that wasn't the case this time for intermediate. Test material comes mainly from discussion and not homework or lecture. Homework is annoyingly difficult. Curves heavily but the uncertainty after difficult quizzes is not fun. Overall, likable guy but unnecessarily difficult course.
Professor Lang usually teaches at Sacramento State, so I am a little confused why his tests are so difficult. He teaches very very easy concepts in class, but provides questions on the midterms that are out of nowhere. There are curves, but I just dislike professors who test on subject matter they do not teach
Lang's lectures are easy to understand and concepts are straightforward. HOWEVER, his tests are ridiculously difficult and barely reflect lecture material. The online homework questions are also really annoying, aren't beneficial for your learning experience, and again don't reflect concepts taught in class. I wouldn't recommend this class at all.
Everyone rating about 100a is dramatizing his teaching style. He is a tough grader and only shares notes in lecture. There's no slides so you can't space out, but he makes them quite engaging and his jokes might be bland but at least he's trying.
Wouldn't recommend. Tests are nothing like lecture.
I know Lang has a lot of mixed reviews, but I honestly really liked him. His lectures were engaging and I actually understood when he taught. His tests were very reflective of what he taught in lecture (but not the hw), and he curved to an 80% average for every test. Much better than Kim or Farris for STA100.
His lecture is super clear and understandable. He selected core contents that he wants us to focus on and explain it well during the lecture and nothing beyond that would appear on the Exam. Lecture is where we learn concepts, and discussion explain the practical questions related to those concepts. Besides, 40 pts curve on Final. Guys, be fair..
Good lecturer, clear explaining the concepts. Would take him again! Learn a lot. Tests are difficult but give us a big curve.
Lang is a pretty interesting guy, instead of midterms there are four quizzes on like 1-3 chapters, he drops one, it's kind of like a topic test. Allows a cheat sheet. Doesn't post lecture or provide practice, Discord carried me. There is a group project, do the work and is an Easy A. Kinda does the bare minimum, no recording of lectures.
he's pretty good! doesn't record lectures or post slides which is kinda tough but he's a good lecturer and made it easy to understand stuff. going to discussions and talking to my TA also helped me understand the material a lot.
Funny and engaging lecturer. Good at connecting the material to real life. Highly recommend.
Took this for a computer science elective and Lang is so good. Go to lecture since it isn't recorded and take notes and I guarantee you pass with a good grade. Super fun class. Shoutout Lang
So bad, the good reviews for this professor is for his jokes. Average test grade will be 40/100. The lecture and test is nothing alike.
1. This man is so rude. 2. Lecture materials don't coincide with quiz material. 3. Lean your TA's when you hit rock bottom!!
Professor makes econ concepts very digestible but consistently ends class early when we could spend more time practicing questions. TA's and discussion will prepare you for quizzes (lectures and homework alone will not!) although he does give a good curve. Only take this class if you truly love economics
Professor Lang is a pretty good lecturer. The only annoying thing is he doesn't post any slides and doesn't record lectures, so you really can't miss any lectures if you want to do well on the quizzes. The homework was very easy but the quizzes weren't very representative of the lectures. It's okay though because the quizzes are massively curved.
Do not take 100A with Lang. His lectures do not correlate to quizzes/final as they are highly conceptual and the quizzes/final are all super math heavy. It's like he regurgitates the reading from the Varian textbook every lecture. He does not record lectures or post notes. We had 30-40 point curves every quiz which is indicative of a lot of things.
Dr.Lang is a good teacher but a horrible test maker. His test averages were often in the low 50s before a curve. He teaches concepts well and then asks you to build a rocket with algebra. He is very caring and overall I learned a lot. Lectures are not recorded though and its paramount you go.
Professor Lang's class is challenging but engaging. While the lectures and quizzes/exams don't always align, his explanations are clear. Attending class is key, and using resources like unstuckstudy ai can help with study prep. Overall, a tough but rewarding course.
We have 4 quizzes per quarter, lowest one will be dropped. He will give a very good curve on each exam. You just need to take his classes and finish his homework, then you can do well in this class. And his class is pretty interesting
Lang is an amazing professor who makes lectures incredibly easy to understand and is a really funny guy. He curves tests pretty good and preps you really well so you can succeed. I would 100% recommend taking this professor. Amazing guy who makes learning economics really fun!
Awful professor, really bad exam, no recording, he talked his ex on lecture, bad bad professor. Don't take his class
Show up to lecture, study, and do your homework, and you'll do great. Homework isn't a lot, he basically teaches from the textbook but makes it interesting and funny somehow. He knows what he's talking about, and is very fair in test making and curves. Nothing on the tests we haven't gone over in class. Really wish more profs were like him.
Test heavy.
Professor Lang is an amazing lecturer. He uses humor to connect to the concepts we are taught and it helps to keep the lectures engaging. There are 4 exams and 1 final, the lowest score of the 4 quizzes is dropped and there is usually a decent curve on the exams. The homework is relatively easy. As long as you attend the lectures you will do well.
Hilarious guy who makes the lectures fun to listen to with his jokes. the tests are mostly applied math and lectures consist of mostly theory so you will have to do some individual studying.
If you want to experience five exams in 1 quarter, then you gotta try this class! Friendly for rat race since you will get the never 100% homework :) Thanks to textbook, remember to buy glasses if you don't have them! If you wanna hear boring jokes and learn nothing in class, come! Wish he never stuck on the high way due to heavy traffic. : )
Prof. Lang is a funny lecturer who makes it enjoyable to go to class. He's mostly over at Sac State so it might be tough to get a hold of him if you really have to. Final exam was easy compared to the 4 midterm exams. A few concepts are a little abstract but it's pretty easy. Study the book, do the homework, easy pass. Loved it.
We can drop 1 exam with the lowest score. His lecture is amazing and has a huge curve on the final.
Overall easy class and good prof. Attendance isn't mandatory but the lectures are extremely helpful to attend to. There are 4 tests but one ends up getting dropped plus decent curves on all of them. Just attend the lectures, do the homework and read over the textbook a little before tests and it'll be easy. Final exam easy compared to other 4 tests
Studying the textbook isn't really necessary if you pay attention to lectures and just do the homework. Suffers from teaching somewhat monotonous coursework.
Lang was a funny lecturer with 4 exams, including a final. The lowest exam score is dropped, and doing homework can boost your grade. The material in class was easier than what appeared on the exams, but there was a significant curve to help raise scores. I scored average on the exams but benefitted from the curve.
Professor Lang gives excellent lectures. Doesn't upload lecture recordings or lecture slides. Somewhat follows the textbook, but only the topics covered in lectures will usually appear on exams. 4 Exams are FRQs, and the Final is MCQ. No practice exams are provided. The best way to prepare for exams is to understand the concepts.
Good lecturer who is always open to questions. Sometimes he oversimplified the concepts, so I recommend reading the textbook or at the very least, doing the practice problems at the end of each chapter. HW is very easy and not a big part of your grade (only 20%). 4 (usually curved) free response tests (lowest one dropped). The final is 50 MC test.
Most of your grade is determined by 4 exams (lowest one dropped). His lectures were incredible. I do agree with the other review that he oversimplifies concepts. Reading the textbook is necessary to do well on the exams. Overall, not a difficult class to navigate and funny guy.
I was quite hesitant on taking Prof.Lang because of the negative reviews but he wasn't as bad as people say he is. He's very straight forward with what he expects. There's four midterms which is a lot but it shortens the info you have to study for. Attendance is not mandatory but lecture is not recorded so it's recommended.
I had him for stats and the class structure was the exact same, which I liked because I find the class structure to be very straightforward, fair, and productive. Would have him again for macro if I could because he makes the lectures enjoyable, even though some might not like his jokes. Came into this class with 0 background and got a B+
I had him for STA13 & ECN1A, and I'd say he's pretty good. He's funny, and his (unrecorded) lectures were entertaining. Can be a little sassy, but friendly. You're only graded by homework and biweekly quizzes, but one gets dropped. If absent, you should have a friend send you the notes to study off of, since he only tests on what's taught in class.
Great Professor and engaging lecture. He's funny and easy to follow along.
I never attended lectures and still got a B+ in this class. One thing that was very helpful was going to my discussions. I had a great TA who would guide you to the main points of each chapter and give you book questions similar to the quizzes. During quizzes and final, we had a full-page cheat sheet and HW was easy too.
Lang is an amazing professor, his abilities as a humorist will compel one to attend the lectures. He is able to explain concepts in a way that is intuitive and he has a genuine care for the learning of his students. Most of the grade is in a few exams, yet the lowest score is dropped. Attend the lectures and do the homework and one will pass.
Loved this prof, he's a great lecturer. His voice needs to be casted b/c why is it... 20% HW (you can get 100% since you have unlimited tries) 60% midterms and 20% final. 4 midterms and the lowest one gets dropped. I went to most lectures, only studied the day of the midterm, and got Bs. go to lecture. just go. Take him if you wanna learn.
Articulate and captivating speaker. His dry sense of humor made attending lectures enjoyable. Commutes from Sac State, so in person office hours were directly before/after lectures. 3 of 4 exams + final are graded "You decide to look on Craigslist for a roommate. By the way, not the best way to find a roommate. You'd be better off going on Tinder"
NO slides, he wrote everything. No class recording, u need to go to lectures. NO practice exams, you need to read the textbooks. Very limited resources, only 2 chance for homework, the only material I can study for is TA's discussion note.
Professor Lang is actually way better than I was expecting prior to all the reviews I read on rmp.He is base off the textbook. He speaks clearly and doesn't rush through his lectures, so it was easy for me to take notes on important informations. But attendance is IMPORTANT since he doesn't record his lectures, I had to go to class while being sick
so many exam
too many exam
Attendance is not mandatory, but there aren't lecture slides or recordings, so go to lectures. He has good humor to keep you engaged and goes over topics at a good pace. There are however, 4 midterms and one final. Lowest gets dropped. Also, in my opinion, he's an attractive professor lol. Would recommend his class.
exams are easy and homework is easy. he's a funny guy but i sense evil in his eyes. there is something very sinister about him and I cant quite put my finger on it but do with that what you will.
Attendance not mandatory but he doesn't provide lecture notes or slides, so attendance will help you understand the material for the tests. He's very funny & sarcastic. Makes sure you understand what he's talking about. 4 exams &1 final, 1 out of the 4 regular exams gets dropped. For my section there's always a very generous curve after every exam.
He makes an 1.5 hr lecture fly by. He is super sassy and really funny, def keeps you entertained while writing notes. this class was pretty easy, i never went to discussion and averaged a 96 on all of the midterms. no grace if youre absent though, he doesn't provide notes or recordings, make sure to make a friend lol. one of the best profs ive had!
Lang does a great job of simplifying info from the textbook and teaching it in lecture. Cant show up? Read the textbook as the lectures are based off them. Tests were underwhelmingly easy. If you can read the respective chapters and not cheat on the homework, you will easily get a B and above on the tests. The tests were easier than the homework
He's literally the best professors I've ever had!
You will get an A by simply putting in the effort.
I really enjoyed taking Professor Lang's class. Attendance isn't mandatory for a grade but class notes are not uploaded under any circumstance. Attending class is not boring and definitely helped me feel confident in the material. The professor explains thoroughly and is funny in class. I would recommend taking this class!
The class is graded on 2 midterms and a final, no homework or practice test at all, lectures notes are not uploaded, I just found the class hard because every midterm and final had a lot to cover but no idea how to study for it due to his notes being to simple, no practice test and the TA not being helpful (office hours did not help).
This class was good because the midterms and finals were curved. Make sure to take good notes and study, I'm not a smart person but I studied really hard and made sure to do the homework which helped a lot. If you don't understand some of the material, the textbook will help. Also super grateful that I had a good TA.
The only material is the textbook. His lecture only takes about 10 percent of the material. No practice and reply email is rude. U can only learnt from a TA and yourself. Double-week test and useless hw(nothing relevant to the test)
He was a bit sinister... If you're a pretty girl, be wary.
Best lecturer I've met. Fun, engaging, and explains concepts straightforwardly. The content of this class is also interesting to learn by itself. Midterms were easy; the final was unexpectedly hard, but he gives huge, huge curves on all exams so I still ended up with an A+. Might seem cynical at times but he does care for his students.
I'm not sure why anyone would rate him anything below a 5, especially for his lower division classes. He's an amazing lecturer and makes the class fun. His tests are all open response, but if you study, they're astonishingly easy. He drops the lowest score of 4 midterms, so one mess up won't set you behind. GO TO LECTURES THOUGH!
very fun professor, tests are not too bad, just study beforehand
I really enjoyed Prof. Lang! While textbook reading is recommended, the tests are made from lecture material only. Inquisitive was the only HW and just had to be done before the test for those chapters. Lectures are not recorded but ultimately enjoyable because of Lang's humor and preference for Sac State haha.
I noticed some people really like Langs style and get good grades in his class, I am not part of those people I have never almost failed a class until 100B, the issue is his tests don't have anything to do with lecture so use TA resources because thats most similar to tests but sometimes the test questions are really out there.
Genuinely incredible lecturer. Super funny and engaging, and I found myself wanting to go even more in depth on a topic I never thought I would care about. Go to the lectures and you will be fine, as the tests are only on lecture materials. Has 4 free-response exams that are overall pretty easy, with the lowest being dropped and a generous curve.
Attendance isn't mandatory, but Lang doesn't upload recordings or notes AT ALL, so you pretty much have to attend to pass. Exams are purely based off of lecture, so the textbook is useless except for doing the homework. Every test is free-response except for the final which is multiple choice. Easy A as long as you take decent notes.
Great professor. Very fun and engaging lecture, explains every concept in understandable ways. The lecture is not mandatory, actually, but as there are no recordings for every lecture, it's better to go to it. There're 4 midterm exams, homework, and 1 final compose the grade, with one lower midterm substracted.
Such a good lecturer he was so funny in class. Doesn't record lecture so GO to them. Exam were hard to study for with no study guide, but there were curves for each one. Lowest exam and homework score get dropped.
The lectures weren't boring and concepts were straightforward. He even made jokes sometimes while explaining the concepts. However, there are 4 midterms which can be overwhelming. They are free write questions and the final is multiple choice. Hw can be a pain since the test are based on the lecture. Overall good class!
4 midterms. Done.
Go to class and study a little bit, that is all the advice I can give you.
If you put some time and effort into studying you will score high. Straightforward exams no conceptual bs.
Professor Lang is funny and teaches really well. Lectures are optional but no recording so you might as well attend. Homework is free 20% since its infinite attempts until due date. 4 exams but one is dropped and all of them are curved a solid amount. Finals is all Mcqs which was lightwork. Understand the logic and you will do well in the class.
Prof Lang is amazing! he has a sort of dry and sarcastic humor that i really enjoyed. the midterms, although frequent and free response, are not terrible and he curves generously! if you're a good test taker you will be very successful in his class! i will be on the lookout for his classes in the future
I thought he was an overall good teacher, but you do have to show up to every lecture because he doesn't record or post notes. Very easy concepts in this class so you probably won't have to study much as long as you pay attention in lecture.
Engaging, concept-forward lectures that focus on understanding the intuition behind econ. The details are your responsibility to master outside of class. Lecture not mandatory but no recordings/notes. Not a big deal though- interesting lectures that are well worth your time. 4 MT and a MC, not a class for everyone. Nice curves on all exams.
Easy class, would barely pay attention in class sometimes, and do fine on the midterms. His lectures are good, I do miss stuff that he says (my bad for not paying attention) but as long as you do the homework or read the textbook you'll be fine. Neither are long or hard. Missing a lecture might be bad though. Every midterm and final is curved.
An all-around great professor who made the material super easy to learn and understand. The homework was easy and pretty much just free points. The tests were also pretty easy and always included a more than generous curve. Just make sure you go to his lectures because missing even one can put you quite a bit behind.
Overall a very engaging and clear lecturer with jokes that makes the material easy to remember. I recommend reading the textbook in addition to lecture notes, but not mandatory. 5 total tests, 4 chapter and 1 final but he drops the lowest chapter test score. 15 total assignments, very easy and good review for the tests.
