Good prof. Very passionate about his work. Good sense of humour and seems pretty down-to-earth.
Completely useless. Consistently late for class - when he shows up. 1/2 way through term and still no course outline!!! Nice guy but easily the worst professor I have ever had (including high school and public school).
The worst professor I have EVER had. Disorganized, no course syllabus, lost my exam, gave no time for readings, lectures are cut & paste from the text book...I could go on, but I won't.
Why is it that the most imcompetent professors grade the hardest? I've never had a worse professor in my life. Late for EVERY class, unbelievably disorganized, uninformative lectures and all around completely inept. It is beyond comprehension that this man is allowed to teach.
I personally like Prof. Langille. He's very passionate about his teachings and even though he's a little disorganized, he's still better informed with real experience in policy research and the like - quit you're crying if you have to wait a day or two more for your marks!
Sadly, Langille can be quite a personable and friendly fellow and uses those talents to mask his incompetence. He is able to fool younger, less savvy students (see below) with his friendly and easygoing persona. Ultimately though, he is an incompetent hack who should not be teaching.
received our winter syllabus feb22..8 weeks into class! informed of assigned readings via email 24 hours before class. makes ****, **** comments all the time..in a lecture about aboriginals, called them indians and repeatedly made reference to their drinking habits. unbelievable.
SEEMS like nice guy but what a total mess as a prof! Sxist & rcist comments galore in lectures - what a disappointment! Lack of professionalism would almost be funny --- if I hadn't spent $1000 bucks for this "course".
easily the worst prof i have had/can imagine. consistantly late, never prepared, biased and closed minded, how this man is allowed to teach is a big strike against york university, his classes are a joke (that are not funny, because a)i paid for it and b)i'm learning NOTHING from this man) taking this class was a huuuge mistake
He is an incredibly ignorant, ****, ****, elitist person I have ever met. He is an opportunist and incredibly hurtful to smart bright students who can see through his veneer.
Reason why he teaches: Godfather is the founder of Atkinson Reasons why he should teach: easy marks if you prefer to write in quantity, activist background, WOW guest lectuers: David Korten Reasons why he should not teach: not organize, complete political bias, rarely politically correct, He "cares" but it is more like he cares for NDP's a
This man is completely unorganized, always late never prepared and has no concept of what a professors job entails, hence why he is not a REAL professor and cannot even get on as full time staff. He cannot keep track of the students he has and fails students when they are not even on his class list. I highly reccomend boy-cotting this mans class.
correspondent Course! Wonderful choice of textbook, thus...BIRD COURSE! Yeah, he isn't organized but that is only hurtful if you goto class.
Very hard in marking assignments. Gave too much work
unorganized! he had no clue what he was teaching! VERY UNFAIR when it comes to marking! if GPA matters to you, SERIOUSLY reconsider taking his courses! otherwise its a fun course to be in and educational!
Very Strict with marks no matter how hard you try
Prof Langille is approachable, lenient and helpful. The amount of course work was not bad (1 exam with questions that can appear in advance, PLUS a choice to do 6 short reading questions OR 3 short reading questions + a essay). The lectures were a helpful overview and covered reading q's, but you still need to read the Hogg text to do the work&exam
Pretty good prof. Probably the easiest prof that I've had so far at York. We had 1 test, 3 assignments, NO EXAMS!!! Awesome prof overall.
He is very personable and extremely lenient one-on-one, but also extremely disorganized. I thought he brought a lot of energy to lecture and he was easy to talk to in tutorial. I disagreed with him quite a bit on some of his personal opinions, but I definitely learned a lot about labour in Canada. His lecture style is perfect for newer students.
Nice guy, likeable enough, but totally disorganized and very biased. I signed up for a course in Canadian Health Policy, and what I got was a course on becoming a social activist for the NDPs with health care as the context. Further, he creates a hostile environment to those who do not share his opinions. Very disappointing and learned nothing.
honestly my favorite proff and ta. he was a bit unorganized but he actually got me reading the books and the little assignments really added up! they were very easy. the one course i didnt fall asleep in!
Disorganized, biased, and frequently dismissive of students who challenged him. One of the worst professors I've had.
Good class, really good material learned. Go to class, read the book and you'll do awesome
Do not take this class! I read some good review on here before taking his class and I regret it immensely. This teacher will spam your inbox with political jibber jabber, will give ambiguous outlines to class assignments, admits to major bell curving, and often literally refuses to give clarity on coarse information.
I am really surprised with the other reviews on here. The lectures were very clear and engaging. The information presented made me question my worldview and by the end of the course I had a completely different outlook on political issues. He also had a great sense of humour and I often found myself laughing uncontrollably during the lecture.
Very good Prof . Go to class do the readings which aren't difficult and go to tutorial. Very easy to get an A since exams aren't worth more then 20% .
easy course if you read the textbook and do the weekly questions (which are the exam questions). no need to attend lectures unless handing in assignments and tutorials are somewhat helpful. david is a slow marker if you have him as a TA, got my midterm exam back after i finished my final exam
Professor Langille shows passion for the topic and you can tell he really know his stuff. If you have him as a tutorial teacher he's really nice but you won't get your marks on time. Overall I enjoyed the class and I recommend people to take it. Its easy and understandable.
He's very nice and lenient, but also very disorganized. As a Professor, he's a little lacking, but if you speak to him on and one-on-one basis for help, he's very helpful.
VERY nice teacher, very fun lessons. his tutorials are very fun and engaging but they really dont help you for the exam. His lectures tho you learn a lot. He loves to talk to you one on one and share funny stories. I really look forward in taking more courses with him my favorite prof so far!
Great professor, good sense of humor
Great professor, so passionate about the topics, great guest speakers also, overall one of my favourite courses I have taken at york!
This course depended heavily on the textbook. If you do all your weekly readings and questions you should be good! Professor Langille overall values the students opinion on his lectures and is very nice and easy to talk to. I recommended this class to others and if I wasn't so crammed with my other classes I would've gotten an A instead of a B.
I read goof reviews about this prof prior to taking his class and REGRETTED MY EYES OUT! Worst prof York has to offer, tough marker and takes so long to mark assignments and put up grades. I'm a hard working student and would never blame a teacher but he is definetly a learning lesson as to why i should look at the rating # not the comments! Avoid!
Amazing prof and favourite prof overall so far in university. Very generous, helpful and has a great sense of humour! Easy examinations along with easy marking while still learning considerably from this man.
Do not waste your money for this course! Two-hours lectures are reduced to just one hour of useless presentations and watching of documentaries often unrelated to the topic. Just easy money for the professor.
this class was my worst class ever
He is very understanding and will help you out as long as you show that you are willing to work for the A. He gives a lot of chances to improve and will tell you straight up what he wants
i find him a great professor waking up in the morning isn't something I enjoy doing but knowing that I have a class that I will look forward it going to always make my morning easier. even though he might not teach the course material all the time overall he is a great professor and is a pleasure to be taught by
He is the worst and most unorganized prof i have ever had. Rarely organizes his information very monotoned and reads off the slides. Don't even need to show up to do well because he doesnt give any extra information during the lectures. Uploads the lecture slides 5 minutes before class and uploads the wrong ones sometimes as well.
Very disorganized professor. He takes ages to start his lectures. Reads off the slides and uploads them 5 minutes before class. Every class consists of a movie or documentary or a guest speaker. Sometimes you are better off not going to the lectures and reading the slides on your own. ALSO, he spams you with emails on articles. Beware.
Took this class in the summer and it was alright. However, I could tell whenever he came to class he talked on the fly and unrehearsed. Your mark depends on your TA though. Overall I learned a lot from doing the assignments, readings, and discussions in tutorial. Just get your assignments done, never miss a tutorial, and you should be good.
Prof. Langille will talk about the workplace and unions, for some this may relate to you. Based on the material he provides us with to learn, it takes us a long way and can be expressed as well in other courses, such as Neo-Liberalism. By far, one of my favourite professors in all of York University.
He leverages his class to advocate for his personal political beliefs and projects. He is incredibly disorganized an unclear about his expectation. The 'real-life project' takes a ton of time for the amount its worth. Be prepared to agree with him to do well.
He's a lazy prof. Always reads off the slides. Course is easy, he's nice and understanding when it comes to extensions. He gives exams in advance. But is VERY VERY UNORGANIZED. He loses students papers all the time and EXPECT to get another students grade if you have him as a TA. You have to be behind him & verify to receive the correct grade
Really inspiring prof to listen to .
He was a great Prof, uploads all his slides before class. I hardly attended class only tutorials and ended up with an 80. Tests are a bit difficult especially the one where they make you define 20 words... over all easy class! Watch out for your TA because they will be the ones giving you a mark.
I love David!, took this course in the summer, and thought I'll fail it (not a social sciences person). BUT BOY! I ENJOYED EVERY BIT! the prof is chill and he cracks funny jokes sometimes (no one laughs at them though "poor thing") he is VERY KIND. very HONEST. and he gives every person just what they deserve. def. an amazing prof!
Funny teacher who laughs at his own jokes! This is such an easy course! Even if you don't know much about the subject. All you have to do is read his slides and study them for exams, which he gives in advance. Don't need to do the readings in this course. Going to class isn't really a big deal because he just reads of the slides.
Took it in the summer and it was so easy.. especially from a business student. Never bought or read the book or needed to study because it was that easy. The breakdown of the course is so spread out that you can do bad on one thing and still get an A. Easiest course of maaa lifeeeee
Professor Langille is a challenging character. On one hand, he makes the course extremely easy; in fact, I found it to be easier than high school. This is good for a first year course. On the other hand, he assigns many readings and often spends less than 20 minutes lecturing each week, opting to show movies instead. Nevertheless, I recommend him.
You don't have to show up to the lecture to pass. He is a VERY easy professor. If you fail it's your fault. His tests are simple a and so are the assignments.
Too easy - no intellectual challenge really. His lectures are just vague generalisations. This course should be called The History of Work, not the future. Several guest speakers and a few partially relevant films. Assignments and exams very simple. If you want an easy A, go for it. If you want to actually think or learn, forget it.
Not interested in teaching. Lazy and inappropriate. Has a gigantic ego and makes students uncomfortable. Doesn't stick to or even provide a complete syllabus. Stay far far away.
Great prof! Very interesting lectures and willing to help whenever you need. Interesting topics covered in class with some political undertones.
He is a great prof! I loved coming to this class! He is very clear and makes sense when he speaks about a topic. I definitely recommend taking his class Future of Work. He really wants his students to get good grades. I cant believe the bad comments about this prof.
He gave his TA'S too much power, and did not do much work himself. He reuses slides and lectures are useless.
As a first year student, being apart of Davids class was enjoyable. he is really funny and laughs at his own jokes (LOOL). dont bother showing up to class cause his lectures are useless, he literally reads off the slides he posts. Has a couple of god TAs (Go for Lee) that go over the useless readings in the text. overall its an easy course
I don't know how this professor has such a low rating. He is perfect for a first year class and is very clear. It is not overwhelming and going to lecture is not essential (good for people like me). If you put effort into the assignments and exam you are guaranteed B+ or higher. He basically gives the exam before hand. His laugh is also really funy
Dave is the man. Plus he used to wrestle in the 70s in the NWA and AWA, which makes him even cooler!
He's pretty funny and caring. Very passionate about what he teaches. The course has a lot of material to cover. Most of the T.A's are hard markers but they can explains concepts and course material well.
Very terrible prof. The TA's are such a joke. They're all useless. Your mark depends on which TA you have. The class average was actually terrible. 90% of the class was getting C's and D's. I took this as a General Education credit which was the worst choice of my life. Don't ever take SOSC 1510!!
Easiest class you can take at York. Don't even have to go to lectures to get a good mark. He is pretty funny, nice guy, and caring. Overall pretty easy class with very easy assignments.
Whoever said this was an easy course WAS LYING. I am a straight-A student. The professor might be easy. The content might be easy. However, your mark DEPENDS ON THE TA you get. You could be writing AMAZING essays, but if your TA doesn't like it, you will get a bad mark. The content IS SO BORING! Most TAs are hard markers in this course!!
I was told that this class was an easy A but its actually not. The grading scheme is heavy and so much work for a "bird course." The course consists of tutorials, 2 tests, 5 weekly assignments, 2 major essays and a presentation. Your mark really does depend on the TA and all the TAs for this course are hard markers except for a few so choose wisely
do the work
The Prof may be easy, but your mark depends on your TA, and most of the TAs are hard markers, so be careful who you pick
I was told that this class was an easy A. However, this class is useless, if you want to lower your GPA go for this class as it is based on TA's. He reads off slides and tries to be funny. The work he asks for this class compared to other bird courses at York U is not equivalent. Had to withdrew from this class as it was affecting my GPA.
Don't take this class as it's NOT a bird course. Like the other reviews state the TA's are incredibly hard markers especially when it comes to the tests so it can bring your mark down quite a bit. They give you .25, .5, .75 marks.
Decent professor, course does involve an adequate amount of work, however the assignments and tests are fairly straight forward and simple. Your mark basically depends on your TA, to much power is given to the TA'S. My one tip is you better suck up to your TA if you want a decent mark.
The whole course depends on your TA. There are i think 15 TAs for this course. David does bothing honestly. He comes to lecture, reads off slides, shows movies, brings guest lecturers. Thats it. He can be extremely rude while trying to be funny. His exams arent hard and he gives the questions in advance. So thats the only good side
They completely changed the curriculum from previous years so its a lot harder than my friends who had it. There are alot of small assignments and the class depends on your TA (most suck so id just avoid this course tbh). 2 tests, 2 papers, 8 journals, presentations and a lot of unnecessary stress. So if you love yourself STAY AWAY!!!!!!!
I got A and only attended 6 lectures all year.
Loved SOSC1510. Not a bird course, but I enjoyed the class & content. Prof is a hippie/free spirit kinda dude. All about climate change. Habib was a great TA. Nice & gives good marks if you try/participate. 2 tests, 5 reading assignments, 2 essays & 1 essay outline, plus participation. Lecture is put on Moodle. Study assignment questions for tests.
I liked David as a prof. He is very funny, sweet, and cares for his students. The only negative side is he is very, very biased towards his own beliefs. The course was taught from a very one sided perspective, which sucks especially for someone who doesn't know much about politics. the TAs make or break your grade, and don't skip class.
I really liked the prof. He is a very nice person to talk to and he usually laughs at his on jokes which I found really amusing. Overall the course is ok. I liked the topics discussed in lectures but I would understand how some people might find it boring. You do have to do lots of readings every week and then he discuses these readings in lectures
When someone is in the "system" too long, they lose any passion they ever had for what the did. This Prof should have retired a decade ago and let the new generation express their views.
He goes off-topic during lectures way too often and laughs about something based on his experience. The way he teaches is really lazy and the TAs were awful. I don't recommend this class to anyone.
He's funny and will laugh at his own jokes lol, this class was really easy i'm glad I took it the assignments were straightforward and I didn't even buy any books for this class. I say take it!
David is great, however lately I feel he is lacking motivation. He seams to provide way too many movies and guests lecturers in class. Your grades are solely based on your TA. All I have to say is, make sure they like you or you wont get a good grade. Its a bird course if you can keep up with the assignments.
Hes a decent prof, but he gets off topic way too much and ends up killing half the class talking about non sense. On top of that he doesnt understand why 80% of the class is confused . MAKE SURE THE TA LIKES U THATS ALL THAT MATTERS
He's absolutely insane, lost everyone's hard copy work, and those that misplaced their online one... well they got screwed. Changed the syllabus 5 times, basically kicked out a student from the class for missing 2 lectures, not b/c he's strict, but b/c he did not recognize the student. York won't do anything about him, highly advise to stay away
Honestly the worst prof at york. This class is literally about organizing things and he is the most unorganized prof i ever had in my life! It is now the end of april and i still have not recieved marks from work finished in September. Everyday he lies to his students saying hes working on marking but hes not. Hes also is very rude w/o realizing it
