excellent teacher, prepares students well for exams, presents topics clearly
Genuine good teacher. Sometimes hard to stay awake in class. Hard-medium tests.
very hard tests. gives round-about answers to questions. nice guy though.
Dr. Leonard is a GREAT prof and a wonderful person! Work hard and succeed!
Is not a good gen ed teacher! He doesn't know how to teach people who haven't
Tests are SUPER hard, do not relate to lecture
Great teaching, but he can't find time outside of lecture for his students Q's.
He never tried to prepare us for his exams. He made them hard on purpose.
He obviously hated teaching this class...it was below him academically!

The worst prof. I have taken at GVSU. Love yourself enough to STAY AWAY!
Good Prof. Learned alot and would take him again.

hard tests but very good teacher. I would recommend taking him.
Tough course, but learned a lot. Great professor.
Great techer, a little hard but cery helpful.
makes hard material easier to understand
Very hard and challenging course, but taught with excellence, one of the best.
Is a difficult course, but he teachs well. Gives good notes.
EXCELLENT prof; hard class, but he's very helpful and super hott
the class is hard, but he knows his stuff
Is helpful in his office hours but lecture is confusing at times, tests are hard
GREAT Prof!!! Makes very hard material understandable!!! Very nice guy!!!
unclear explanations, not patient if you don't understand, very hard exams
Best chemisty prof ever!

Hard, be careful not considerate
Great chemistry teacher! Connects material to make it easily understood.
Awesome teacher. I learned more from him in one lab than any other chemistry prof ever. Very practical and helpful.
Difficult class and material, but EXCELLENT prof!
very nice guy, tough class, however he will go out of his way to help you
too hard
Picky picky picky... can't get an A no for lab no matter how many hours you spend trying to be perfect... Run.
Best prof I've had at GVSU.
He is funny and explained topics as simpley as he could. He seemed to want us to do well.
You gotta love that Beta-Lactamase! Fun class, great professor. Professor Leonard is really willing to go out of his way to help you understand.
I hate chemistry. For me, it's just a stepping stone toward bigger and better things, but professor Leonard made the class tolerable. He's very helpful and tries to keep humor in the lectures. His exams are difficult, they make sure you understand the material, but he curves them. If you have to take biochem, try to get him as your prof!
Great Professor! Readily available to meet with you during office hours. Takes the time to break things down to ensure you understand the material. Doesn't act like Einstein, which was great! Wish I could take him again.
Amazing prof! Made the class interesting and somewhat easy to understand, tests are not all memorization, you have to know how to apply the concepts however he goes over a lot of that kind of stuff in discussion. Wants students to do the best & usually curves tests! If you have to take biochem take it with Leonard because he is by far the best!
Extremely hard class. He won't curve the exams at all. He makes the class at least somewhat interesting and easier to follow, but the exams are still ridiculously hard.
This guy is absolutely amazing. Notice, however, that this is an extremely hard class. No teacher will be able to spare you the work you will need to do. But Dr. Leonard will help you succeed, and is certainly the best prof I have had here or anywhere.
probably the best biochem teacher, but still pretty difficult. tests are not what you think - at all[no curving]very difficult... but makes things interesting. class is a nightmare but leonard makes it tolerable.
Good professor, very very hard tests.
This prof is very hard! I attended office hours regularly however he seemed irritated if I did not understand. He knows his stuff but seems impatient if you don't..Tests are impossible..Good luck
Extremely challenging material taught with skill and precision by a professor who is truly knowledgeable and passionate about biochemistry.
He is a super nice guy but one of the most challenging classes I have ever taken. His homework is very long and hard and the exams are even worse. He knows what he is talking about but does not make it easy to get a good grade.
One of the most difficult classes I have ever taken-the only class in my college career that made me feel a little stupid & I'm a BMS major. Extremely intelligent prof who knows exactly what he is talking about. Passionate about the subject &willing to help. Long homework, challenging exams. Very tough class, but Leonard adds relevance and humor.
Fantastic prof, would take him again. Made a tough subject very easy to understand. Homework and exams are application based and difficult, but he makes himself available to help all the time. Highly recommend.
This guy is very very smart but isnt the best teacher. Go to his office hours every week, do the homework packets, ask tons of questions and you will do well. It takes alot of work for a decent grade. The book is only used for a reference.
HORRIBLE "study guides" that are supposed to be notes. I would suggest recording lectures. Very boring. Near impossible tests.
He's not a good professor. His notes are hard to understand with little clarification. He's not helpful at all. I went to him for help during office hours and he told me to read the book. Tests are extremely challenging and near impossible.
Prof Leonard is wonderful. The homework is long and assigned often but if you spend time on it and get help when you need it, you will be prepared for tests. This is a tough class but his expectations are clear. One of my favorite professors so far.
Great professor. His lectures are helpful. There are four tests, easy hw, and group quizzes so there is a lot of clangesto get your grade up. I never opened my textbook and get an A-
Dr. Leonard is wonderful. I took his 461 class last winter and spent a lot of time outside class in his office, where he was very helpful. Biochemistry is not easy to understand, but he made it interesting with lots of applications. Tests are difficult, so study hard.
I love him. BEST chemistry teacher I have ever had. He is SO knowledgable and really knows how to explain the topics in an easy-to-understand way. His notes are PERFECT. He teaches you exactly what you need to know, starts off simple, and builds from it. Homework via BB after every class was EXTREMELY helpful too. I would 100% recommend.
Professor Leonard was the best professor I have ever had. Biochem can be a difficult subject and he clearly knows a lot about what he is saying. He doesn't talk like he is much smarter then his students though, he simplifies it to a level that is easy to understand. Exams are curved, and online homework is due before every class but it is easy.
Made chemistry fun! Hard class but set up excellently! 10/10 recommend!
Loved this prof! He explains the material incredibly well. I would also recommend going to his office hours, because of the difficulty of the course. He curves his tests and gives a lot of easy online homework to help your grade. Discussions are helpful. Leonard is a great guy all around and a very helpful professor!
I loved prof leonard! He teaches biochem exceptionally well and is very knowledgable on the subject. Most importantly for me he relates what you learn to things that you will actually need to know for a career in the healthcare field. Can't say enough good things about him. Really does want you to do well and an A can be absolutely obtained!
Professor Leonard was the best professor I have had at Grand Valley. He had organized notes, explained topics in a very understandable way, incorporated plenty of time into class and discussion to practice problems like the test, and had reasonable workload expectations. Definitely take him!
I LOVED prof Leonard! This class is hard, but he makes Bio chem interesting & fun! He is a sweetheart , and willing to work with you! His lectures & notes are essential and really helpful. He is hands down the best Biochem prof at GV.
I loved professor Leonard!!! The class is set up very well. Homework, when assigned, is concise (only a few questions) and helps master skills gone over in lecture. His tests are difficult but his homework and practice tests prepare you well for the exam. He's excellent!
Without a doubt, and being in college for upwards of 5years, he is the best prof. Ive ever had without dumbing down the course content just so student get an A. He is a very understanding professor and contributes to further thought provoking ideas in biomedical scenarios. If going to med school, I highly recommend
Best biochem professor, although I believe he's retiring soon. The homework he gives you has unlimited attempts to get 100% and lets you go back and do it for practice before exams. Gives you practice exams and awesome lecture notes. This isn't an easy class, but he's your best shot at getting an A.
He is one of the best professors and there to help you anytime you need. Go to his office hours and do the homework, and should be an easy class. I studied the homework and read some text for more retention, but amazing teacher! Good luck!
Prof Leonard is a must for Biochemistry/Pre-meds. He is one of the best Professors I have ever had, and it has everything to do with teaching style! He breaks down complex biological mechanisms and uses cleverly handy analogies that make it very clear. By no means is this an easy class, and you're going to have to work for the grade, but doable!
Leonard is the freaking bomb. Biochem is difficult, but he is by far one of my favorite profs!!! Super caring and encouraging - he acts kind of like a dad :) Visit his office hours! He is more than willing to give advice about class material, as well as life in general. Homework & optional questions are GREAT ways to study + practice exams!
Leonard is a solid choice if you aren't good at chem. This class is hard, so no matter who you take, you have to put in a lot of effort. He gives unlimited attempts on homework and gives practice exams. There are 5 exams that are about every 3 weeks so be prepared to be tested on info you just learned. Exams are half multiple choice/half drawing
He claims that attendance isn't mandatory but takes attendance every class. He's a very hard grader and is very picky. No partial credit is usually given. His homework and tests are pretty difficult but he does skeleton notes and tells you what he wants you to know, which is helpful. Homework doesn't come from the textbook but he recommends reading
I was very nervous about having to take biochem online this semester but Im so glad I got Professor Leonard. This class was easier to me than Organic Chemistry, and thats because he is clear of what to study for exams If you like chemistry and if you put a few hours in to study for exams the day or two before youll do just fine!
Honestly one of the best professors I have had at GVSU. Cares a lot about his students & wants them to succeed. He is very understanding & knows his content can be challenging at times but he is always willing to help with any confusion. I looked forward to attending his class b/c his kept it interesting & simple. Do yourself a favor & take him!
Leonard made you really work for your grade, but he is understanding and nice. Don't need textbook, he provides notes and lectures and makes his own hw. Exams are tough, you need to study hard and LOTS of memorization involved. HW are essentially unlimited attempts and he provides few practice problems and practice exam. Final is not cumulative.
Professor Leonard is a great teacher. This is a tough class and Professor Leonard helps navigate through the difficulty. Discussions are a great way to apply what you learn in lecture to exam-like questions. If you have the chance take this class with Leonard!
I had Professor Leonard for the CHM230 lab. There is barely any work outside of the class meeting time. He is extremely knowledgeable and explained chemistry very well. He was a fairly tough grader and often took points off lab reports for silly things. He is also picky about clothing; no ripped jeans, crop tops, shorts, open shoes, very strict.
Professor Leonard is so nice and very smart. He is very helpful in class when you ask questions, and gives a lot of good information for the labs. The only thing is sometimes he can be a hard grader, but it is still easy to get a good grade in the class. I really liked professor Leonard though and I would recommend taking him.
I really enjoyed Professor Leonard for biochem. He had clear, organized notes and homework, and assigned homework that was actually worthwhile and helped me understand the content from the notes better, unlike other homework-heavy chem classes (looking at you MasteringChemistry for Orgo). He was very fair with expectations and wanted us to succeed.
Cannot say enough good things about this professor. Always accessible and willing to work with you to help you understand material. I loved that he provided practice tests for exams and felt that his exams were very fair.
Hands down one of the best professors I've had at GVSU. He teaches in a way that makes hard material seem easy! 10/10 would recommend.
Great great great! Makes hard material seem easy and genuinely cares about the success of his students. I honestly wish I could have him teach all my classes at GVSU lol.
Tests are impossible.
I never would have thought that I could have enjoyed biochemistry. Professor Leonard was great and he made the lectures enjoyable! He learned everyone's name within the first few weeks, which I've never seen in a science professor before. Attendance wasn't mandatory, but there were in-class assignments you needed to be there for.
Participation matters, tests are very hard, multiple homework assignments due almost every day.
Professor Leonard taught this class in a very productive and clear matter and made hard concepts easier. While this class is difficult, he always made sure to prepare us for the exams and the homework was beneficial for understanding the material. If you put in work and study for the exams you should be fine. I recommend!
Professor Leonard was a good professor and kept you engaged during lectures. He had good notes layout. His exams did seem to be harder than what he would make them out to be. He was good about giving help when needed though. I do recommend him, but spend extra time studying for exams. There is lots of homework, but they don't take long at all.
Amazing professor. Caring, understanding, willing to work with you. Make sure you're going to class, studying a little bit every night and you'll do good!
Best professor at GVSU! He is so clear with his lectures and so helpful if you reach out in need extra support. He actually cares if you learn the material and teaches in the best format ever.
Exams are impossible would not take again beware.
Amazing professor for a hard class! Practice the homeworks until you master the concepts, it helps with exams so much. Try your best on practice tests because he is willing to talk you through difficult application concepts, and the real tests are very similar! Study a bit each night too and attend discussions and office hours. Awesome guy!
Prof. Leonard was an overall good professor for biochemistry. His exams and homework were pretty fair, and I enjoyed taking his class. Only thing I would say is to make sure to listen and take good notes, as he mentions important topics in his lecture but doesn't write them in his fill in notes, so understanding the material can be tricky. Enjoyed!
Very caring, wants you to understand biochem and succeed. "Practice exams" match the actual exam almost perfect so it's very easy to ace exams. Only issue is he gets stingy if you don't do all the video notes and if your late to class, he will call you out which is more annoying than anything. Would defiantly recommend this guy.
Dr.Leonard is one of the best to take this class with (461). He is very knowledgeable about what he teaches, gives great examples, lays out his expectations for exams/HW very clearly, is easy to reach with questions/concerns and is overall a very respectable caring guy. Understood this class with him much better than I did any of my O-chem classes.
Gives "partial credit" but takes off 2+ points for a small mistake. Will call on people randomly in lecture. Gives great examples in lecture, but skeleton notes are often out of order. Incredibly long and confusing homework but helpful if you have the time to do it(don't have a job or other classes). Overall his pros are about equal with his cons.
