This is a very cool class. If you have to take a prerequisite like english 27B, then take it with Lipton. He's a good teacher, and his lectures are quite helpful.

Once I got to know Lipton I saw he made perfect sense! He is one of the few people on earth who do EXACTLY WHAT THEY SAY! IT makes the class pretty easy as long as you do the reading, follow directions and participate you are fine!

When it comes to writing, Lipton knows his stuff. He cusses cause curse words are a part of language. He's rough around the edges cause he's not ruled by the pretencious bull around academia. He's a solid teacher, eccentricites aside.

The comments made about a pathetic teacher are really self reflected. He does what he says, and this is what gets to those who want it easy. All in all great teacher, but harshly judged.

Good teacher, interesting lectures. Has knowledge and really wants to spread it. Do your work and study.

What is wrong with having to know perfect MLA format in an English 1 class??? That is the way it has to be tough luck for those who cannot figure out how to do MLA, it is not that hard. Teacher at least challenges students so we learn something. That is why we are in college, right?

This teacher is awesome. He is very centered around deadlines so when something is due it's due no excuses. I couldn't stand English before this class and I want to take him for English 3. He grades tough but fair. If you ask for help he will help you but pay attention or he asks a lot of questions not to embarass but to teach.

he's okay....a little strict though

he was very difficult..i believe i got a C in his class...he is hard..requires a lot from the students..but he is a great teacher. He cracked a lot of jokes. He was the last class of the day..where normally I would have been pretty beat...but he made me laugh and explained everything thoroughly. I found his class to be difficult but very enlightening. I do plan to take him for English thing..bust my ass again...but i learned a lot from his class.

Great teacher. Hard class, but always entertaining. He goes off on tangents quite easily. Mention brocoli and away you go. Funny guy, strict grading. If you're up for a challenge, go for it.

Not a professor to take if you want it easy, but if you want to learn and move to next level prepared, this is the guy. Fun atmosphere. P.S. brush up on Matrix movies..hehe

Very precise with his demands, but definitely forces you to improve your writing and the clarity of your work. Also has entertaining lectures full of wonderful sarcasm. Hurrah for Skippy Lippy!

A lot of people really dislike this teacher but I think he's a really good teacher. Even though he is undeniably hard, he is very educated and it comes across in the way he teaches. I learned a lot from being in his class thus far, and I would recommend him for people who are up for a challenge.

This class is definite not easy, but most of the students that had trouble, didn't LISTEN to directions (FONT!) and didn't seem to care about their grade. I can thank him for helping make me a better essay writer, making me laugh a lot, and getting me to watch Matrix II (jk). Don't be lazy and listen to directions! You'll do fine.

wow this teacher is so weird his class isnt bad you just have to do all i mean all of his work in order to pass! he's actually not as bad as i expected. He's a really cool person but can be way to sarcastic at times.

The best english professor I've ever had. You learn a lot in his class. The people who don't like him are kids that still belong in high school or can't follow directions. He really preps you for college writing and it makes a big difference. You earn your grade and its worth it.

okay He wasn't terrible But I wouldn't repeat the course I would take a easier 105 class and then maybe a college grammar class the result would be the same reccomend him for college grammer.

He is a great teacher. He is hard, but prepares you for the "real world." If you want to learn, take Lipton. If you are a lazy person and just want to skate through life and want the easy way out, don't take Lipton. He is great, really he is. What he teaches yoy can take with you for life. Even is you don't move on to a Univ. trust me, he is good!

I thought he was hard, but real, You can't expect things to always be easy. You might not notice, but, you actually remember the things he taught in class. If you want to learn, take him, if you want an easy way out, don't.

Prof. Lipton is the best english teacher i have ever had, he challenges you and if you're up to the challenge you will learn alot.

I also took Lipton’s detective fiction class and ended up loving everything by James Ellroy. Lipton is great! All of his classes prepared me for upper division college writing. Anyone who really wants to learn to write should take his classes. Lipton will make you work, but it is worth it!

prof. Lipton is the best teacher i have had thus far in college. He is hard. He will challenge you. You will learn. I would love to take him again for english.

David is extremely intelligent. This comes out in his lectures. If you are in school to get a real education, and want to become a better writer, he is the professor for you. If, on the other hand you are at City college to goof off...don't bother, he won't pass you.

Professor Lipton is the best teacher I've had. He really pushes you to do well and assert yourself!

I've been reading these comments and some of them are just dumb.Yes, David makes you work, it's a hard class, and yes he grades on minor mistakes and not the writings of the students it's a grammar and usage class, and he expects you to know these things if you're in his writing classes.This makes you a good writer and him a great teacher.

Best ever!!! David Lipton is a professor that will push you to your best. He may be a little unorthodox, but he definitely makes class fun and worth while. He brings out the best in you and he's hot!!

prof lipton is great...you will learn a lot from his class...he cancells class on occasion and doesnt mind at all if you do not show up for class...take him for english 1 or 105...you will pass!

PROFESSOR Lipton is a good guy. Doesnt put up with **** and doesnt accept late essays. If you dont turn in 1 essay you fail the class. we started with 40 students and ended with 8. He purposely trys to scare people out of the class at the begining. im still waiting to go have a beer with him. great guy overall

All the people who have said mean things about this professor, just don't want to deal with him. He WILL challenge you and HE will be on your back, but you WILL learn. NO DOUBT. Just follow directions, and participate. I cannot be more clear than that. If you want to better your education, TAKE HIM. He is not a waste. You wil definitely benefit.

Teacher is very intelligent, clear, &direct. Follow directions, format, &do what is told & it's an easy class to pass. If you're immature or like to speak out of turn not your class. If you want to actually learn something and work for your grade, this is a class for you. Expectations are high but but the work load isn't much compared to others.

A hard teacher at first. Eases up towards the end. Weeds out the people that would waste not only your time but his time in class. Really prepares you for college level writing and a college environment. Suck it up and deal with it - I did.

Hard, may seem intimidating but worth your while. Very intelligent and easy to understand. A few essays 3/4 200-500 pg essays. Lots of learning if you're actually interested in being a better writer. Follow directions and ask for help and you should be fine. Research paper towards the end of the semester, ASKING for help is advised. GREAT teacher!

He's a great teacher overall. I learned the more you're involved in class participation or even meeting with him to review essays that are due, your grade will eventually show that effort. Class wasn't hard - you just needed to read your literature, ask questions, set up appointments before an essay and turn in work.

I took Professor Lipton's Critical Thinking class 2 years ago, I think at the end of the semester there were 8 students left in class. So yes, he is challenging and his class takes alot of effort, and some people cant handle that. I believe the thinking skills I gained through his class bettered me as a human being. defintely reccomend!

I would definitely read a book he's written, as he's quite funny and interesting. On the other hand, I would avoid his class like the plague. In the beginning, he's a complete hard-ass. Toward the end, he spends most of his time trying to humiliate students. If you're willing to risk your grade to actually learn English and MLA format, take him.

you will definetely learn many things from his class and he knows what he's teaching. However, I do not recommend him. Actually, I discourage you if you think grade is more important than you're learning. Think twice. Nobody cares what you've learned but they care about your transcript. He uses previous students' essay as examples to humiliate.

I took his class over the summer. Yes, it required a lot of work. Lipton has zero tolerance for slackers, but who does? Besides, you're in a college environment now, get used to it. He is a wonderful professor; he is well educated in his field of work. I am now a senior at CSULB...and a much stronger writer because of Lipton.

He's a great proffesor, however he is one of the strictest out there. If you're willing to sacrifice your grade for actuall learning take his classes.

Strict teacher but he knows what he's talking about. Great sense of humor. Just show up and do what he asks of you and it's really not going to be a hard semester. Listen, follow directions, take notes.

GREAT TEACHER! I learned how to write in David Lipton's class. He may not think but I went on to graduate with an MPA. Currently applying to an MBA program. His rules for writing are fairly clear, so as long as you supply the content, Lipton will provide you with the structure. He will give you the confidence to be an excellent writer!

He's funnier than hell, and means what he says. I highly reccommend this professor if you want to actually learn something as oposed to just bolster your GPA.

He is strict on assignments, attendance, and tardies. but is very clear and concise during and after class. will give help if needed. not an easy class. vocab, grammar, punctuation test are easy if you really study. not a slacker class. his essays are easy only 3 pages long :)

While strict, he was fair. Concise lectures with a good sense of humor. He was absent a few times, but not excessively. Follow his guidelines, and there should be little issue.

I took his English 105 class Fall 2011. I liked being in his class because he was passionate about English (high standards)and he was humorous! I didn't do well in the class because I took more units than I could handle and I got 10 points off each time I was late. From one of his many stories/lessons I learned you get what you earn.

There's literally no homework and only two-three tests in his whole class. It's a very easy class.

So he's rude. Took him in 2011 & again in 2012 because I like to give myself challenges. Something we as college students need to learn how to do: visit our professors during their office hours. He'll be there. He will make you cry, laugh, and learn---in that order. Prepare to be on time, DO THE READING, & speak up. BTW, he's ironic, not sarcastic.

I took Professor Lipton for an English course about 30 years ago. I have yet found another English teacher as Best as David. Hands Down!

I took English 1 years ago, and happened to be fortunate enough to have selected the course taught by Professor Lipton. He was by far one of the greatest Professor's I have had. If you want to learn and actually work for your grade, then this is the Professor to take. I was happy with the challenge, with his teaching style, and his humor.

Professor Lipton was one of the best teachers I ever had! I had him for both Creative Writing and Detective Fiction classes over 20 years ago. He was truly inspirational and was a master at teaching writing as a craft. I went onto UCLA, graduated with highest honors in English and won awards for my writing there all thanks to Professor Lipton!
