Couldn't be happier with any other professor. Confident Instuctor that cares about Students. Can relate well with students. Grading criteria is very clear and fair. If you do well on youre speeches you will easily pass the class. My advice to future students would be to memorize speeches. (Memorization is not Required)

Machen is the type of professor in which one can relate and interact with much more easily in PCC than say... Watkins for example. He makes lectures fun because all contributions from students are seriously considered no matter how jokingly the student intended it to be. Machen uses these "joke answers" and successfully steers them into the lesson.

He assigns everyone in the class to a "house." The four houses compete throughout the semester and the one with the most points doesn't have to take the final. If you don't like group work, this class isn't for you. Lecture and lessons are straightforward. Doesn't care much about attendance and is VERY understanding and fair.

Okay, This professor is literally the best! I loved him! He helps pump you up before speeches and offers extra credit. It is a speech class so, you should expect to give oral presentations. He offers to listen to your speeches ahead of time. All around he is AN AMAZING TEACHER! He makes his classroom a comfortable and safe place! TAKE HIM !!!!!!!

Really great professor - wants to work with students so they learn as much as possible. If you have an issue with the class (eg he lectures too much, or you want to do more group work, etc) talk to him about it. He cares very much about his students and wants the best for everyone in the class. I would totally take him again.

He's a great professor and incorporates student participation into his lectures to help us better understand what he is teaching. The exams are note-based. The coursework is laid out in the syllabus but there will be times assignments are back to back. I'd recommend everyone take his class. Like, do you even interpersonally communicate, bro? B)

Machen is a great teacher, period. Gives very clear, focused lectures centered on helping you deliver clear, concise speeches. He is focused on overall improvement, not immediate understanding of the material. Makes speech days very comfortable. I don't love public speaking, but he makes it easy. Provides a lot of online materials to assist you.

Professor Machen was my favorite professor! If you want an A, he will guide you towards one, all you have to do is work hard on your speeches and take advantage of the extra credit opportunities. He is easily accessible outside of class and gives out great feedback. The class environment is laid back, but take down notes, it's key for the final.

Machen is the best prof I've ever had. He's young, funny, smart, and so caring. He not only wants to help you get the grade you want, but he will become your friend throughout the journey. Took Professor Machen's Winter Speech 6 class and he is by far one of the best the professors at pcc. Very interesting and fun class that was not hard to take. A couple of speeches, two big debates, and a couple of writing assignments. Kept the class environment fun and grading is very straight forward. Would definitely recommend.

Take him! He helped me come out of my comfort zone and I genuinely progressed in public speaking. Comes across intimidating the first day, but he is the best! The grading criteria is very straightforward. Easy A if you turn everything in on time and practice your speeches so you come across confident and prepared! The final is super easy also!

This class is an easy A, take good notes & pay attention. He does put you into groups at the beginning of the semester, sit in the front! The group with the most points for getting the best grades on assignments skips the final, my group skipped the final & got A's on it! Grading: 6 assignments, 2 presentations, 3 exams, 5 easy group worksheets.

THIS WAS THE BEST CLASS IVE EVER TAKEN AT PCC. I love him so much he truly cares about his students and their success. If you show up to class and do your work you will get an A. Speech days are extremely important to be present for. you truly learn a lot in this class.

Machen definitely goes beyond what is expected of a professor. He is very understanding and provides extra credit to those who go to the speech center to rehearse their speech. Understands mental health and the importance of self care so he doesnt want you to push your self too much. He will work with you and the class and introduce you to public speaking gently enough. The speaches will have to be already made. Ex, "I have a dream" or the poem, " the raven." You are not writing your own.

David is amazing! You can get extra credit on every speech which means that if you actually try you can get a perfect score or even higher! Hes super nice and always gives good feedback. Take him! You will get over your fear of public speaking.

He is amazing for speech class. He is a motivated professor who I am glad to be in his class. There was a lot of speechwriting going on, but I got to learn a lot. So, it worths it.

This class was fun. He is very specific about how he grades speeches. He is big on the respect for speakers so never be late on speech day. It was a fun class to take and he was a great professor.

Machen is such a great professor. I took his SPCH10 online class and it was pretty easy but also helped me learn a lot I didn't know. He's a super friendly and nice guy and replies to emails pretty quickly as well. If you're hesitating to take this online course (I did because I was afraid of public speaking) JUST TAKE IT.

I took Professor Machen for the summer session &passed with an easy A. I walked in to class the first day dreading to do speeches &outlines but walked out grateful for having taken it. If you hate public speaking, take him. There's 3journals, 2 speeches, &2 papers. He offers extra credit points that will boost your grade up one letter grade!

David Machen was one of the best professors I have ever had. he responds to emails quickly and encourages his students to go to his office hours. He is very helpful and it is clear he wants his students to succeed.

He will make sure you break your outer shell and make you wanna talk to your classmates. He's funny and took keep class interesting he'll make fun of you every now and then but in a respectful manner. Would 100% take him again!!!

He's such a great teacher! He wants you to succeed and if you're shy or have a language barrier he is understanding and helps you and encourages your peers to help. You build a sense of belonging with your class mates and you don't feel very nervous when it's time to speak in front of the class. He is like another student almost.

Professor Machen is a FANTASTIC instructor. if you do the work and listen to the lectures you will get an A. he is very fair. if you keep your A by the end of class, he does not require you to take the final, which is a HUGE plus for keeping your A, especially if you have test anxiety

Professor Machen is the best professor I ever had. He gives a lot of good feedback on the homework I have done. Professor Machen grades speeches thoroughly and carefully, allowing me to pass.

He was a challenging, yet a great instructor. He grabs the classes attention and has everyone remain on task. He gave good and fair feedback also on speeches and we did one group speech as well towards the mid-end of the term. Overall, I enjoyed the experience.

Very lenient towards grading your speech, hence speech 1. Theres some times where I thought I did bad on a speech only to have a full score 100%. Speech every 3 weeks. Every speech class, you'll be nervous and that's a given. You'll need effort. Take this class and its your best chance of getting an A. Good guy and very caring.

David Machen is a legend! Everybody in Interpersonal Speech passed with an A in Summer 2019. Only one person missed class more than once because of actual necessary reasons. Everybody wanted to show up. There was a group project, writing assignments, and really easy but fun exams! If I could take him for my business classes even I would. I LOVE HIM

This class was a hybrid (8-week class) so it was half online and half in person. The class, being a short class, moved very fast. I really enjoyed this class because he made the speeches fun and very well explained. As long as you put the effort in he is easy on grading and available at all times. He also uses the entire book effectively.

One of the best professors at PCC. Professor Machen was an amazing professor who was always there to help. He knew how to make a online class fun and interesting. He always graded work and speeches within a week of turning it in so you always knew your grade in the class. Take his class, you wont regret it!

BEST Speech Professor at PCC. I highly recommend him. His canvas and class is very organized and clear. I recommend him especially for online classes or even 8-week classes for people who work. Super nice and considerate with online learning. Gave great feedback and graded speeches carefully to help you improve. Didn't lecture much, he provided PowerPoint and would review what he expects of us before each speech. Overall not a hard class and it was nice having such a considerate teacher.

Answers emails quickly, has clear grading criteria, gives great feedback, and provides examples. Some textbook reading and questions but no need to buy it, prof provides the required textbook in the modules. 4 speeches and is very considerate of any situations. Put in the effort and you will get an A. Would definitely take him again and recommend!!

He is so nice and patient. He is my favorite professor at PCC so far. Always responds within a day two at most, and ever went out of his way to give me feedback on an assignment that most teachers would of just said do it yourself. I would take him again. Class was very informative and I learned a lot I didnt know I did when communicating.

Professor Machen was great. As long as you pay attention to his lectures, you will learn a lot. He is realistic and explains complicated terminology in easily understandable ways. I didn't mind his homework assignments. He was super cool. If you need this class as a COMM major, take him. You'll do fine as long as you watch the lectures.

Professor Machen will give you good feedback; he cares about every student and reminds you every week of the class assignment due every Sunday. This Spring, 2022, we have a total of 4 speeches, requiring three audience members and records. You can team up with your classmates or friends if you need an audience.

Professor Machen might seem intimidating at first but he's actually one of the coolest professors at PCC. Now as long as you speak with confidence and make sure to give eye contact. I loved Professor Machen. He gives very engaging and interesting lectures. The only assignments were 2 journals and 2 analysis papers. 3 exams total. He's exceptional at communicating and teaches everything that will be on the exams. All the lecture PowerPoints are accessible through Canvas. I only got a B+ cause I missed an assignment.

One of my favorite classes. This review is overdue, I took his class last fall but by far my favorite professor. His lectures are very well explained and will engage with the students or have you participate within your group, he will not move on until he believes the class understands the lecture. Professor Machen is probably the best teacher ever, he is super caring and nice. You have a total of 4 speeches, 6 discussion, 4 quizzes, and 4 reading guides, all super easy to do. Easy A as long as you put in some effort and do all your assignments, he is a very nice and modern teacher, and he is very understanding of any issues that may come up.

There are 4 speeches and one final. For every speech, we are given the option to read off of a script. He promises his class that they will be able to pass if they attend class and do their work. The homework is writing your speech and the final is online. For 3/4 of the speeches, you can earn extra credit if you get notes from a speech tutor.

Took his online speech class. He's a caring guy and offers great feedback on your writing and speaking. Had a total of 3 speeches that you had to film, and could use a script. No crazy expectations or curveballs. Probably hardest thing to do is creating and writing the speeches, but Prof. Machen will help every step of the way. Also, responds daily

Since English isn't my first language, I thought a speech class would be challenging. However, the class was much more fun than I expected. Professor David P. Machen was thoughtful and caring. His lecture was clear on what to prepare. It was one of the classes I can recommend.

Prof. Machen was a great speech professor. His lectures were very clear and super engaging even if they were online. The workload was manageable for a 6-week course, not too much but not too little either. Like any other class, put in some effort and you will pass. He is passionate about what he teaches and explains the content well.

good professor very blunt, and straight up won't coat things. before the last week of being able to withdraw he drops you if you have a grade below C.

I really enjoyed this class. Got to write some interesting papers on some interesting topics, and definitely became a better public speaker. I would and have recommended this professor. He is lenient and understanding about his essays. He gives great lectures and in speech 010 you weren't required to present. This class was to many understand communication between people. He makes sure everyone understands the topics.

The best way to go about public speaking! Prof Machen is amazing. He says your grade reflects the work you put in and that could not be more true. I took his online class. He expects a discussion post and 2 responses per week. You have to turn in 4 speeches total with 3 audience members. If you have trouble meet with him and he will support you.

I've taken 2 classes with Prof. Machen now, and I honestly have no complaints. Probably the most straightforward class with the clearest rubrics you'll ever see. He's accessible outside of class, super understanding, and offers extra credit assignments! Take good notes, follow the instructions, pay attention to the deadlines, and you're golden.

Class was very interesting and professor is great! Only 5 assignments and 3 exams in this course. Professor takes attendance at beginning of every class, attendance matters, don't be late! ;)
