scary!!!
You will earn a lot/good prep for law school, but not easy
Exhibita a total contempt for his students.. Has no interest in helping students learn. Combative, insulting, and personally distasteful. He tells terrible jokes and expects you to laugh.
He's very different. His class is pretty hard and you have to do the reading to keep up, but he's a pretty cool guy. Knows his stuff. Tells corny jokes, but they're kinda funny. A lot of people don't like him, but I thought he was cool.
GET OUT NOW!!!!!!
Old California Democrat, if you can handle the crassness, go for it... He's pretty unclear with what he wants, it's a stab in the dark. He's a cat person, if that explains anything...

Run for your life. He is a horribly bitter man and no one should be subjected to his class. I would not wish him on my worst enemy. Many of his comments were **** and frankly quite rude.
awesome jokes. funny. keeps you awake in class. he is a tough teacher (lots of court cases to know), but it is worth it. he is my favorite teacher.
if you don't mind homework and going to class on a regular basis, he is great
This guy is horrible. He make inappropriate comments to students and is not helpful. STAY AWAY!!!
Starts off the class with "what is politics " and leaves you guessing for the rest of the semester. He seems like he would be fun to hang out with after class,,, but for a teacher,, i wouldnt recomend him.
Dr. Mann gets a bad reputation for some reason...but, he's a great guy! The jokes he makes in class aren't innappropriate, they're funny! By the end of class you've learned more than you think! Take it...it's interesting.
He's a nice person with a crude sense of humor, but he knows his material.
His classes are intersting and easy to get through, but his tests are VERY difficult and hard to study for. Stuff on tests is not stuff he talks about in class. Nice guy, tough grader.

DON'T take this class...it really doesn't matter how much you study for the tests because you can read every single chapter and know all the terms, but if what you write isn't exactly what he wants, he counts off a LOT for it.Basically a shot in the dark
Teaches the most hated PolySci class in the entire major, knows it and loves it. Very hard grader - terrible sense of humor. Wasted lots of time in class screaming "RIGHT??" at the class until everyone replied "Right." Very st
extremely bad jokes...but it's kind of funny b/c they are so bad. Never any homework, just read the material. Tests are difficult, but never any quizzes. In all, it wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be.
Arrogant and crass- smat guy with a chip on his shoulder- 251 ws not so badJurisprudence- 3 essays- grades very harshly and very unhelpful proffesor
Dr. Mann is not nearly as bad as the rep. he gets. He is fantastically interesting. Grading is difficult, but you learn so much
hes the mann
Mann's alright. His classes are informative and can be interesting. He's very informed on subject material. Tests and papers are hard and he's not an easy grader, be prepared to spend time on papers.
He is not as bad as he seems at all. Go to class and see him for help during the year not right before the paper is due. Don't talk to him about law school until after you take 251 or are a senior. Don't be scared of him, it will just make it worse.
Not as bad as everyone makes him sound. Corny jokes...class is pretty dull, but he teaches you what you need to know- do your homework though
he is the most frustrating professor i have ever had. He always has a joke or comment and most of them show how uninformed or biased he really is. I am still wondering what the Paper had to do with what we supoosedly learned in class.
Sit up front if you can; get on his good side by laughing (normally) at his jokes; never ask a question (during class) that could sound stupid - he will eat you alive. Easy homework, but rough final and term paper. Hold out for another prof if you can.
he's not that bad! show him that you care about your grades and go to class and he'll help you tremendously...I did an internship under him and I think he's a great guy!
AWFUL! If you want to learn something, this is not the class for you! He will not answere your questions, and really doesn't care if you learn anything or not. Crass, condescending, tough grader; simply put just an ****.
Mann sucks. I learned nothing and fell like i wasted my time. If you are not a girl he hates you. He is that guy who couldn't make in the real world so he's a teacher. Jokes are bad and he is such an ass. stay far away from him as you can. The final is imposible and he doesn't help you at all.
stay away
Constantly telling unfunny jokes. Entirely arrogant.
he is horrible, he teaches nothing, offers no help, and tells the worst jokes ive ever heard... dont take his class and hopefully the school will notice and fire him
I honestly beleive that Mann is on her writing his OWN GOOD REVIEWS!!! Terrible professor. If you want to actually get what you paid to take this course (800$) seek elsewhere for instruction. With a professor who can teach!!!
He is not that bad. If you can ask someone who has taken his 251 class for assistance. They will help you out. Go to class and you will get extra credit. REALLY IT ISNT THAT BAD. TAKE HIM FOR 251 OVER FORD!!!!!
Yeah he makes corny jokes, but the whole class is basically just taking notes and listening; he assigns homework every now and then and gives you the chance to do homework over if not correct; 1 paper but he will take the time to help you. Pretty easy!
he's not as bad as everyone says - if you go to class and show that you care, you'll do fine. he doesn't grade very hard either, his tests seem impossible, but i think he expects students to think that, so he grades accordingly. i loved this class - take it and you'll learn a lot.
He's really not as bad as everyone says, and his paper can be enjoyable if you pick a good topic. If you go to class, pay attention, and do the work you'll be fine.
No one new what was going on until the end of the semester when we had the paper and the final. Thats when everything came together. Even then, my grade was up in the air. The only advice for this class is to pray!!
he puts on a front at first, just trying to scare the people out that dont really want to be there to learn~study guides for the tests, but if you skim the cases and take GOOD notes from discussion they are cake~dont let the guy intimidate you, you'll get a lot out of the course
Although his office is interestingly decorated, his teaching style is, well, not. And hearing those damn bad jokes so many times has probably had a negative effect on my IQ. AVOID AT ALL COSTS.
Very challenging and exciting. He is my absolute favorite prof. A little bit like my father: you don't know as much as him so you mind as well listen. He is also a child of the 60's and has the draft card to prove it. One of the few POLS profs with that type of history in Charleston.
He is a jerk. His essays have to be so detailed and he grades them very unfair. You take a lot of notes and if you miss anything it is hard to catch up. Hardly anyone does well on any of his 3 tests. Don't take him he is rude and crazy.
He is a great instructor. You'll learn alot. Take notes on what he says of the cases and group them together under subject (outlined in syllabus)when studying. Write what he talks about for his papers and ignore his comments of "think outside the box." It will only confuse you and get you a C. Overall, the class is fun and interesting.
It would be interesting to see the grade point average for those students who downgraded his teaching. I came to college to expand my learning, which is exactly what he did -- he challenged me to be a better thinker.
I really enjoyed this class and his style of teaching. It is helpful to listen to him during discussion but the entire class was discussion (it was a MM class so that had something to do with it). I enjoyed the class and the teacher. two essays and a final essay exam. Fun, easy class.

251 is going to be the worst class in the major even if Creed or Curtis taught it, but I wish Mann were not so self-aware that everyone comes in hating it. The back-loaded grading system sucks, but that's how law school is, so coming from him, it makes mo

This man is crazy! His tests are so hard and he is the most liberal minded person in the world and grades against you if you are conservative. Very smart though and he knows what he is teaching. His class can either make u or break u as a poly sci major. make sure u are in class the day after the tests.Don't recomend unless u want to fail out.
first, all of the c of c polisci profs are liberal. Mann grades by student number only so he doesn't hold what you say in class against you. he knows his stuff, he is quoted on political book covers. He will help you if you go to him during his hours. I wouldn't have taken 3 classes with him if he wasn't a good teacher.
Don't let this man ruin your hopes and dreams. He's pretty pompous and makes you feel stupid. He loves ambiguity and if you go to him for help, he'll read his emails while he dodges questions. Sooo much reading, but all the readings say the same thing. Don't take him!
He's a hard teacher but you will learn so much. For those who do poorly, it's because they expect to come to class and just sit there and get an A. It doesn't work like that. Go to class, read the homework, and study for the tests. If you have questions, ASK. And if you have a chance, ask him about Patrick Henry.
The class is interesting, but if you don't want to go to law school, don't take it because it's all he talks about.
I really cannot beleive he's tricked some kids into liking him. He's completely condescending and unhelpful, and he'll do everything in his power to shoot down your hopes and dreams of law school. But if you need something to ruin your social life and bring down your GPA, go ahead and take the class.
He is a wonderful teacher! Many don't like him because they are scared to ask him questions. He was my advisor and teacher and he always made himself available to help anytime. He is really in your corner, you just have to talk to him. He does not give out Fs unless you deserve them. He has wonderful stories with a dry sense of humor! Take Him!
I'm a POLS major so I'm very interested in this material, yet I didn't like the way he taught the course or how few assignments we had. He's very impersonal and shared a little too much of his personal life!
I have now taken every class Mann teaches except 101...and all that I can think is that I must be high everytime I've registered for them. Dont do this to yourself, its not worth your GPA. If youre trying to get into law school, Charleston School of Law profs that know him will tell you his classes are unnecessary as well. Take something else!
Go to his classes or die. He is huge on missing classes and it will cost you your grade if you come to class even late...he likes to single people in class out but he doesn't mean it in a bad way. Class notes are CRUCIAL to passing his class...make friends with someone in your class to give you notes in case you DO miss a class.
He is intimidating at first. You never see his eyes and he always has a cigar. You HAVE to go to class or else you will be on his bad side. If you keep up with the reading and microcases you will do fine. I ended up with an A in the class with little work but the reading. No papers and 3 or 4 test.
He's hilarious. Attendance is necessary but he makes the class fun so you'll want to go. He's not easy but as long as you study and do the work you'll be fine. He's a fun teacher I recommend him but don't take him if you're easily offended or need a lot of attention because he is impersonal. This class is easy if you take good notes.
Dr. Mann was funny, and he kept my attention, but it isn't fair to call this a 100-level class. You are expected to know specific court cases for every test, plus tons of terms. Definitely a GPA killer.
This class is a GPA dropper for sure. Should NOT be an entry level class!
Overall good teacher...tests come somewhat from lecture but mostly from the book. You MUST read the book to do well. He is funny, and I enjoyed the class for the most part.
Hardest teacher I have ever had. I've known him since I was a kid, but I would not take his class again. The only way to do well in his class is to go to EVERY CLASS and take perfect notes, and then study like you've never studied before. That said, he is very nice and helpful, and is willing to work with you outside of class.
This was a very challenging, but worthwhile class. Attendance is MANDATORY and you have to do a lot of reading/ studying. Its worth it, but only if you are willing to work.
Not extremely difficult, but still challenging. Most of the class is case study, but he makes it interesting. Attendance is part of the grade. As long as you show up for class, read the book, and do the microcases, you'll be fine. Gives some extra credit and its possible to make an A without getting a single A on his tests.
Overall a very interesting prof, he keeps the class involved in discussions on a daily basis. If you know how to write a college level paper and you do the readings you will excel in this class.
Incredibly helpful in a quirky sort of way...He loves what he does (i.e. teaching and pre-law advising). (Dr. Mann is a kid at heart -- congenial, innocent, and down-to-earth; he's also a great sense of humor.)
Great class if you are willing to do the work. Intimidating guy at first, but he has great stories and alot to teach. DOnt miss class, take detailed notes, do the reading and you'll be fine
I did an independent study with Mann. He can be intimidating at first, but he's really a nice guy! Doesn't give lots of deadlines-so you have to do work. Lots of reading and papers, but overall a good experience. I would recommend doing an independent study with him if you have to do one!
If you are willing to learn the facts and organize your thoughts for his tests, it's a well deserved A. The tests make you a better writer and better thinker and are rewarding if you are up to the challenge. He's as liberal as they come, however and doesn't attempt to hide it.
Oh Dr. Mann...he can be pretty funny but he intimidates the hell out of his students. He has a lot of office hours but you don't feel welcomed there. Will sometimes try to get a discussion going and then just cut it off. Middle of the road prof. Avoid if possible though.
Do not take Dr. Mann for POLS 251. 60 percent of your grade is determined by a paper and final exam at the end of the course, and it's really tough to predict your grade on either assignment even if you study. POLS 251 is a bad class anyway, so don't take it unless you are required to.
Do not take! Exams are not bad if you feel like reading an entire text book. Completely unfair exams tries to trick you and his grading is very subjective. Absolutly terrible teacher and his jokes are horrible!!!!
Civil liberties - literally like 10+ readings per class, tests cover 40+ court cases, absolutely no guidance on what he wants you to study for exams. Two writing assignments with NO GUIDELINES but then he takes off numerous points because you didnt give him what he wanted. No attendance, but takes it sometimes. Doesnt teach just rambles. RETIRE!!
My second time taking Mann was decidedly less enjoyable than the first (Civil Liberties). His writing assignments and tests (none in this class) are thought-provoking and class discussion can be rewarding, but Jurisprudence was basically another POLS 250 (for majors). Dry lectures; rambling; unsure what the class was intended to accomplish.
Do not take unless forced. My only B of the semester came from this stupid class. Absolutely worthless throughout the entire semester, all you do is sit and listen to his terrible jokes, and 60% of the grade is totally unknown until you get your grades on cougartrail. I tried to like him, and I tried to care...both futile endeavors.
a really interesting teacher. very difficult tests. too bad he's retiring.
If you like listening to liberal rant then take this lunchbox. Lectures are a killer, I had to pinch my nuts to keep awake.
He was really nice
