he is a nice man, but gives a lot of work. my advice is if you do not have access to a computer do not take his course, he emails us the lecture outlines to print for every class and do online readings. the course required 3 books. its a lot of work! but a nice prof.
Horrible teacher!!!!!!!
Prof. Marshall is a really nice guy and is always open to helping his students with essays and better understanding material. Everyone complains that he gives too much work, but if you actually read the pages you are supposed to read, do the LITTLE hw that he gives, this class is very simple. STAY on top of things, GOOD PROF, take him.

this teachers is an idiot and does not no how to teach his friggen classes
a great teacher i loved his western civ 1 class im taking his western civ 2 class next semester i recommend him. not much work and what is assigned is very easy and you have plenty of time to get done what you need to get done. if you stay ontop of the reading then its even easier haha.
He gives you everything you need to get an amazing grade in his class, he gives you at least 2 weeks notice for every paper due, and he gives you all the questions that will be on the final and midterm. Hes really quite a smart guy and does an excellent job.
Professor Marshall is a great professor. He gives you the outlines in full detail, and if you pay attention and show up everyday then there is no reason that you shouldn't get a good grade in his class. He is also very helpful and if you show interest or he see's that you are trying he will help you with your grade.
very helpful professor, you have to read though! don't have to take notes in this class, most of it is based from online readings and books. The midterm and final he gives you exactly what you need to know in advance
This professor is awesome! Although, be warned; by the end of the semester, you will know ALOT, but you have to be there, and you have to take notes. Highly recommended. If history is your major, his classes are for you.
I TOOK HS II DURING 1ST SUMMER CLASS, HE IS GOOD. HE KNOWS HIS STUFF. HE DOES GIVE A LOT OF MATERIAL TO READ. I FOUND HIM TO BE QUITE AMUSING. :) HIS LECTURES ARE ALL ONLINE. HE OFFERS HIS HELP FREELY. GOOD TEACHER.
He loves History and is very enthusiastic so lectures fly by! Its a survey class which means alot of info.in a short amnt of time. Reading assgnmnts are overwhelming espec. in 5 wk class. A few writing assgnmnts so he tries to give u lead time. He e-mails outlines for each topic which is helpful for note taking. Really enjoyed his class.
Ok, now when I took this class and im still taking him I though the class was going to be an easy A because of how people describe him as a teacher. There are a lot of readings and u really need to focus and do the assigments and read the readings because they are always in the mid term. He is not a bad teacher, U just need to do the work.
He was EXTREMELY boring. Lectures were very long. Well if your interested in history then you'd enjoy it but if your the opposite like myself you'll sleep every class. in honors course no midterm just write short papers weekly atleast 5 out of 9 of them.
This was a pretty easy class. As long as you keep up with the readings you will ace every paper and exam with flying colors provided they arent BS. The lectures are more like a bonus if your interested in History.
his lectures are very boring but i love him..hes funny and sounds like the guy with the puppet from south park so all together class is long and amusing. theres a****load of readings which i hate but if your late with your paper you have like a week to get it to him lol all together i suggest taking him
Good teacher. Makes histry interesting, he's really into it.Theres a lot of reading but overall the class was understandable. I would recommend him for history.
he really was a bad teacher he was not helpful whats so ever. He is one of those teacher who are perfectionist.Too much reading too much online readings lectures are very boring.that is someone I will never recommend. you better make sure your papers are perfect if not it is automatically an F" i would suggest another teacher
I dont know what the person below me is talking about. In the Essays that I have written so far, I feel he gave me a better grade then I even deserved. He's a really nice guy, very understanding. There really isnt too much work for this class, the online portion is very easy. You would do fine on the tests if you study.
Took him for Western Civ 1. He's nice but his class sucks. He is extremely boring and doesn't really explain too much for what is expected on tests. Half his class is sleeping during lectures. Readings are way too much. Hard Grader, But he's nice.
His flamboyant personality livens up the history room, however there is alot of work due to his extreme interest in the matter. Very Helpful, very interesting, very knowledgable
I had him for western civ 1. I thought his class was great. Whenever there was a test or essay he told you EXACTLY what he wanted you to do. I got A's on almost everything because he is very clear on the assignments and prepares you very well for tests. Very nice guy too.
HES SO EASY. JUST DO THE WORK AND YOU CAN PASS. READ CHAPTERS, DO THE QUESTIONS, AND THATS ALL TO IT.
he is a little weird but he is a nice guy i had him for honors.. we had to read books throughout the semester and he gave us book quizes on them so basically he told us the question in advance so a pre-wrote the quizes. one midterm paper 5pgs and one final paper 8pgs i got an A it wasnt that bad of a class
Marshall not only gives you the material you need to succeed on a silver platter but he will also hand feed it to you! He gives you all the information you need in his power points and will tell you exactly what you will do for the midterm/final. I would highly recommend taking any class with him. He's a really great professor.
So easy. He gives the questions for his tests and quizzes a week ahead of time. He's also really lively in class so he'll keep you awake. Nothing bad to say about the man.
Professor Marshall is awesome! He really knows his stuff and his lectures are always entertaining. He really pays attention to who is working hard and is very fair with grades. Best history teacher at Suffolk,in my opinion.
Professor Marshall is adorable and a lot of fun! I had a huge crush on him all semester. Probably one of the smartest people I have met in my life. His class is reading intense but you will learn A LOT about History! If you ever want to win on Jeopardy, take Marshall!
By far the best teacher at Suffolk! I had him for honors Western Civilization 101 and 102 and he was amazing! I was so apprehensive going in but he makes everything so easy! It was a pleasure to have him teach me. No tests, just book quizzes and an essay midterm and final. LOVED this class, highly recommended!!
I took Professor Marshall for Honors Western Civ this semester, and he was an excellent professor, very passionate about his subject. The papers were challenging, and the tests were in-class essays based off of assigned books, but as long as you're willing to put in the work, this class was totally worth it. I'll be taking him for 102. :)
Good class to take for Humanities elective. Holocaust. Great discussions 3 or 4 books to read. Review movies picked by you. Papers written on all for grades. Movies in class. Midterm paper 5 pages. Final 8 pages. this as an honors class. Lot of writing. Great teacher, animated & lively for such a depressing course. Recommend this teacher.
Amazing professor and person. Helpful, brilliant, personable, funny, interesting, and pretty much everything you would want a professor to be. Definitely recommended.
I've taken Dr Marshall twice now. He is hands down the BEST professor at Suffolk! If you want a real understanding of History, he is your man. Don't be a slacker or texter in his class either, give him the respect he deserves....you'll be lucky if you ever meet someone this intelligent in your life again.
one great prof! Really did a good job explaining lessons and the work easy to follow since there were printable packets for each lecture with questions you could answer as he taught with his PowerPoint presentations. He also made the class fun and enjoyable, definitely made history fun and entertaining! Take him if you can, I recommend him 100%
He is all-around one of the best professors Ive had all semester. He makes his class interesting and his powerpoints are easy to follow. I sincerely wish that all of my professors were as organized and prepared as he is. He lectures for the entire time but he never keeps you passed the limit of class and always stays on task. I recommend him :)
Professor Marshall is so cute and funny, lectures the whole time, not a strict grade, just a midterm and final and two essays great professor recommend !
Honestly this was the worst experience I have ever had with a professor. He was unhelpful, gave no direction, his essay questions were vague and incomprehensible, covered the material way too quickly. Very tough grader, don't expect to get an A.
The best professor I've had since I started college! He is very organized, lively, and passionate about the subject which always makes learning easier. There is a fair amount of work which is fairly graded. Loved his class!
I WILL KEEP THIS SHORT AND SIMPLE. NO EXAMS. I REPEAT NO EXAMS ONLY WRITTEN ESSAYS AND PAPERS. COMPLETE THE ASSIGNMENTS AND ACCEPT YOUR A!
Professor Marshall is not a bad teacher, but his methods teaching the class are tough to handle. Four books to read in such a short of amount of time; book quizzes for all except for one. If you're an avid history reader - by all means take him.
Complete the assignments and show up for class. It is strongly advised that if you do not like to read to avoid this class because he gave us 4 books, of which we needed to refer in our papers to receive an A. The books were good for their scope, but his powerpoint presentations were a bit vague. Overall, good.
He is a little weird but nice professor. Hands out review sheets before tests & Quizzes if you study the review sheets you will be fine and also you have to write 2 movie reviews as well...over all easy A :)
If you want an easy A, take this class. He teaches to the test, so it is ALOT like high-school. HE gives you the questions before each exam so everyone could really get an A unless they are braindead. If you want to coast, take the class. If you want to learn, take someone else.
This class requires a lot of time, reading. His notes are not clear or helpful, you have to read the textbook to even know what's going on in class. Quizzed on outside readings, like Greek mythology. Tests include essay and online readings.
Not terrible but i do not recommend! Very tough grader. Lectures the whole time doesnt even give you the chance to catch up with him talking for notes. Expects you to know history like he does. Not easy going, make sure to hand in the assignments on time!
EXCELLENT PROFESSOR, KNOWLEDGEABLE AND WITTY, JUST PAY ATTENTION, READ AS YOU GO, AND YOU SHOULD BE FINE. ONLY 2 PAPERS A MIDTERM, AND A FINAL,NO HW, REVIEW SHEETS GIVEN ARE EXTREMELY HELPFUL. HIGHLY RECCOMENDED
Awesome teacher! Easy A! no hw but you have to do a lot of reading! 2 papers due and 3 tests. He lets you use cheat sheets for each test! he gives you the questions to each test so jot it down on your index card! he also gives you extra credit! Funny teacher!
dont take him if history is not your strong subject. Dont take him if you have other classes to study for.
He made a heavy topic like the Holocaust so captivating to learn about. Be advised that there's A LOT of work...5 assigned books, 5 pg midterm, 10 pg final essay, 3 movie reviews, and book quizzes. It's possible to complete if you're disciplined. If you're up for the challenge, it's a class you'll never forget. Awesome, down-to-earth professor.
He is the best,, super clear and very good professor.
if you don't care about school or your someone one who sees no validity or purpose in studying history then don't bother. To me personally he was everything you want in a prof. He is ready and willing to give all the time, not just for class but for advising, that professors are supposed to but DONT. He had away of exciting me for assignments class
His work is totally confusing. Talks about Greek mythology and adds his opinions too often. His slides are not clear at all so be ready to make your own notes. 1 term paper plus 2 essays on midtermfinal plus 3 stimulations (1-2 pg paper) such a huge work load for such a blind subject we learn
Flamboyant and over talkative. Instead of telling us what's important, he;d rather go on about his (vague) opinion of Cold War events. Movie reviews are terrible unless you like watching movies from the 1950s. He expects you to read all 4 books he assigns cover to cover. At least he lets you bring in a 3x5 card for tests. Wouldn't recommend, 210.
two movie reviews two book quizzes one 7 page research paper one midterm & one final Class is an easy A if you do all the assignments & show up to class (he takes attendance). Although i have no interest in modern world history, i have gotten at least a 90 on every assignment. (Also you dont have to do the assigned readings on blackboard)
Professor Marshall is an absolutely must have history professor. His lectures are very interactive and we have very interesting class discussions. Definitely get ready to read though. There were two novels and the semester paper was on both books. There are also assigned readings that will show up on tests. He also is very open to aiding students.
Took for holocaust had a great experience I. The class and actually learned a lot and made an interesting topic even more interesting . Which is something some professors fail at but not this one
One the best history teachers at Suffolk. You can tell he's very passionate about History which makes it enjoyable and interesting. If you need to take HIS 102 - he's the professor!
I had Dr. Marshall for HIS101 Honors and I enjoyed his class. I think that was because he is so passionate about history and really wants to impart his knowledge to students. However there are a lot of outside readings (we read 4 books and several historical texts) and a 10 page paper so be prepared to work.
Even though all my classmates ended the semester complaining about Professor Marshall, he was actually very enjoyable to have. Western Civilization 2 is pretty good; he talks about events and it may be helpful to take notes, but you don't really use them later on. Several book quizzes, a paper, a midterm. Be a good writer and don't procrastinate!
I took prof marshall for his102 5week summer session. History is my major so I'm admittedly interested in the topics. From day 1 he gave us all the work that needed to be done. 25% for midterm, term paper 4-5pgs,final,and... attendance. no hw, Do the readings and your good. His lectures are interesting, take notes, dates and events. Great prof!
He's a tough professor but he mixes things up and makes history relative in his lectures with a lot of videos and music. Take notes, pay attention and DO NOT plagarize on any of your papers, he'll catch it. He's always willing to give you help if you need it so he's super strict about cheating.
I like Professor Marshall, his tests aren't that hard but you have to read 5 books! Really? Most of us are taking 3-4 other classes, it's so annoying to have to read that many books. Holocaust is interesting but after a few classes it's just sooo boring. I hate to say it but unless you love history, skip this class.
Amazing lectures but way to much work. If you have a full time job and going to class full time do not take this class. Grading is way to hard, I have a 4.0 and worked incredibly hard in this class to be overly stressed to receive B's no matter how hard I tried. Explanations when grading not clear, expects you to know history as well as he does.
Really one of my favorite professors at SCCC. Without a doubt one of the smartest men in the entire school, he really doesn't fit in there, lol. He is the type of professor I would expect at an Ivy league school, lots of knowledge, ask him any question and he will have an answer or he will know how to find the answer. A must take class for lib arts
DO NOT TAKE IF YOU ARE NOT PASSIONATE ABOUT HISTORY. I'm an honors student and took his REGULAR western civ 2 class and bombed it. Lectures are extremely confusing, he touches upon so many irrelevant details that it's difficult to keep up. HARSH grader, I thought I wrote two perfect papers and only got 85 on both of them (that's very poor for me).
Took the course over the summer, went by very fast. Lectures are long but keeps the information interesting. Not a history major but did retain info! The amount of work was apporopriate. Put effort and you get the grade you want !
Okay the honors student below clearly didn't put in a lot of effort. I took his honors class and aced it-- many of my classmates did as well. His class is definitely not easy but you get the grade you deserve. He's such a brilliant man and he is very kind. He's more than willing to help students understand the material. Just work hard and be smart!
This class is very difficult, got little to no time to actually interact with him. Essay heavy, everything is an essay. When you ask questions he gives a vague answer. Gives little to no direction for the essays but expects a lengthy paper. Overall very difficult, would not take a class with him again.
His lectures are ridiculous. He goes over SO much information that you don't need to know. Like information about tiny countries no one has ever heard of. But you can skip literally every lecture and still get an A in the class, so I would recommend him.
I took the summer class and he is very dedicated to this subject. If I asked a question because I didn't understand something he answered me like I was stupid. So don't go into this class with questions if they are not up to his level. he only gave 4 tests and a final was a 7 page paper of a project he created.
modern world history was either: A- So boring people slammed their heads into desks. OR B - Talking about Bono (I wasted an entire 30 minutes of my life writing about U2) and other irrelevant people.
he is alright
all you need to do is show up to class, lectures are super boring because he just trows information at you which you will NOT use because all he does is give quizzes which are based on some book we are supposed to "read" but he would always email us what the quiz questions were and u can just google them. he lets you bring a flashcard for the quiz
Although he is lecture heavy he is passionate about his craft. If you show up to class read the interesting books he chooses ( he does not use a text book) which are short reads you can easily pass his class. He is transparent and makes you aware of every quiz, test and essay he will give with ample time for you to prepare.
At first, the readings seemed overwhelming but they were encompassing. No textbook. Midterm & final can bring 3x5 index card to class, 2 quizzes based on 2 - 100 page books & gives review sheet, 1 - 8 page research paper due final week of class. I found his style of teaching very interesting and he's super knowledgeable on what he's teaching.
Dr. Marshalls class is insanely easy. He lets you bring a cheat sheet for every reading quiz. Even though there are a couple books to read, but you can just spark notes them and make it work, same with the movie reviews. Hes a super understanding person and actually cares about each student.
Professor Marshall is a really good teacher. Very intelligent and cares about his students. Read the books (and do the quizzes for them), do the 10 page research paper, write 3 two page movie reviews, and do a easy written final and get a easy A. It might seem as a demanding course, but its not. There are NO TESTS! Just do the work!
Get ready to work! The class isnt hard but what makes it difficult is the amount of work and reading. You definitely need time to read or at least whats most important because lets be real most of us are taking 3-6 classes. Make sure you dont leave his project a last minute thing and you will pass.
He failed me in a middle of pandemic lol thats all. So if this doesnt stop you from taking him then good luck.
He made me feel very relaxed and not stressed about anything. He cares about his students and their feelings more than most professors. His grading is extremely easy, and he gives great feedback on what you hand in. Professor Marshall is a very fun guy and he is so easy to talk to. He is scarily passionate about history. He is very respected.
Great professor! There are many written assignments but theyre very manageable if you make time for them. He is very understanding about covid and took late work without taking off any points
Very informative instructor for this course as well as History as a whole. Lectures can be underwhelming, but is good to use as sources for papers. Dr. Marshall is very nice and can be funny at times while teaching. Not a hard class, but definitely read a lot with required material for papers and quizzes if you want to get an Easy A in his class.
This man loves what he is doing. It's a lot of work, I had to read 5 books, write 3 movie reviews, one semester of project of 10 pages. But I can it was really an interesting class. I love this guy.
Dr Marshall is a very good professor, he gives little to no homework and give 3 quizzes a semester and a paper, and a final/ midterm. His final/ midterm and semester paper he gives you what they are on first day, super easy of class and gives you months to prepare, his lectures are very interesting and he cracks a couple jokes would take again
Professor Marshall was awesome. He definitely knows his stuff inside and out. His grading depends on essays, but conversing with him to understand what he is looking for makes it easy. Reading the books assigned at the start of class will make the entire experience less stressful.
He was very nice overall. The work is very manageable and easy if you put in some work to prepare. Lectures are fairly interesting if you enjoy the subject. Only thing is he brings his own political opinions into the room and treats many of those opinions as fact, which may not be comfortable for everyone.
He is not a tough grader but the workload can be heavy especially if you are taking other courses. Be prepared to put a lot of time aside for his work. I do recommend him since he is funny, understanding, and works with you to help you succeed. He always has his door open to offer assistance.
Prof Marshall really loves what he does. He is very knowledgeable, and a caring guy. He lectures for the whole class, but will answer any question you have. There is no HW but you must read a couple of short books for in class essays (which he lets you bring in an index card to take and posts the questions in advance). He reviews for the final too
Very fun and easy going Professor, only need to purchase about three $10 books from Amazon and no textbooks needed. Very fun lectures and interactive with all students in the classroom. Would definitely take again.
I had a hard time with this professor. He went by his on notes on each topic. I had to print out many handouts to use them for many assignments. Very though grader. I worked hard in the class and barely passed. Communication was difficult.
I enjoyed this class. Professor Marshall brings the energy and passion for what he teaches. No hw, only 3 essays, and a final. Overall I would take a class of his again.
Professor Marshall has a tough grade for major assignments and gives tough grading criteria. Took this class online this semester and struggled with both major papers. Discussion boards are self-explanatory, and easy to complete. Readings are crucial, be ready to read.
The class is based around discussion posts, a few quizzes, a midterm paper, a semester paper and a final paper. Theres a lot of writing involved, so if that's your strong suit, this class is for you. He provides all of his own written lectures and videos which I really appreciated, no need to buy a textbook.
I took this class online and even through the screen you can tell he's very dedicated and loves his job. The assignments were mostly essays which were straightforward and some disc posts. He's hilarious in his videos and I loved taking his class.
he mumbles a lot and you have no clue what he is saying. he goes way to fast and doesn't actually provide anything to copy or write down. he is always rude. if you go to him with a question he won't answer it and spend about ten minutes criticizing you instead. never take him if you're looking to be engaged in a class
