Dr. Marshall is one of the BEST profs I've had in my university experience. He is passionate about his topics, his assignments are interesting, and his lectures are great. He always has time for students outside class time, and he lends out his personal books for papers. GREAT GUY!
An excellent prof who knows his stuff. He supplements his lectures with articles that he puts on blackboard. He is a hard marker but very fair, he tells you how hes going to grade your work so there are no surprises. You have to earn your grade with Dr. Marshall. If you have the chance, take a class with him.
Very interesting. I thought it was going to be another lame class on canadian history but i ended up loving it!
Coolest history professor out there! I mean, he has so much passion in teaching history so much so that you don't need coffee to wake yourself up at 8am for his class. Not everybody gets hooked up though, and many drop the course.
Dr. Marshall was by far the best prof I have ever had. He gives his students every opportunity to do well and is very helpful. His lectures are also very interesting and his passion for every topic makes every class worthwhile. Even though calsses really aren't mandatory, i hate missing them. I plan to take every course i can with him.
A great speaker, very passionate and knowledgeable. He really helps you understand the debates in a way no textbook can. He's also a great guy and fairly lenient when deserved.
Dr. Marshall is by far the best professor I have ever had. If you require any history classes, I more than recommend any of his, as I have taken them all! He is very clear and so long as you do what he asked you will be guaranteed a great mark.
Dr. Marshall is great. He knows a lot about the class topics and is prepared to answer questions if you are confused. He is a very fair grader, and if you are prepared to participate a lot, you'll do well in his seminar classes.
Nice guy, likes what he does. Little demanding for a 200 level class.
He is a great prof! The best lecturer I've ever had at the U of C. He makes the subject interesting, and it is fun to come listen to him, even just to get a good story. I would highly recommend this professor to anyone.
I loved Dr. Marshall's classes. He is clear, concise, and extremely easy to understand. While class attendance wasn't mandatory, I loved going and listening to him lecture by memory - like he was telling his kids a story. Tests and essays were easy, and grading was extremely fair. My favourite prof at the UofC. RECOMMEND!!!!
amazing teacher, very clear in his lectures and structured. listening to his lectures are a real joy, even for someone not interested in history - its like a story. definatly reccommend him!
Super helpful.
really great prof. You never felt like you were unsure of what you needed to know.
Best Prof ever, definitely take him. He is sooo passionate about his job. He makes everything interesting and he marks very fair.
Marshall was really great. The material is quite dry but he does his best. Very nice guy. I would recommend this class. :)
Best Professor I have had at the U of C. The material can be a bit dry, he knocks himself out to make it interesting. Extremely nice man, cares about the student. Marks fairly and is very approachable.
Amazing prof!!
he is obviously extremely passionate about teaching and what he teaches. Fair marker and very interesting to listen to. I was never bored in this class even though it was Canadian History. Highly recommend!
As indicated, he is a great professor. During his office hours, he gave excellent advice on resources and books to use on research projects. His class is well worth the time, money and effort just to learn how to be a good researcher, never mind that he teaches the subject well. His minor weakness is that he lacks structure in lectures.
Doesn't post lecture slide. Seems disoriented when lecturing. Marks heavily on spelling and grammar, if these aren't your forte avoid him. If you are strong at grammar your essay arguments are irrelevant and course is easy.
He is the absolute BEST. He's so incredibly helpful and nice, he really wants his students to do well. He's one of the most helpful profs at the University, and his lectures are like epic stories every time. Loved this class. Coming from someone who's completely new at history etc., that says a lot.
Easy and very interesting course. He is very knowledgable on the topics covered and is a very good lecturer. Two short papers and a written final are all marked fairly and pretty easily. Need to go to lecture as he doesnt post notes and has no text on notes. All notes for final need to be written by hand.
I agree with the positive comments, written here, about Dr. Marshall. He lectures with the kind of passion one would expect to hear coming from a pulpit. The information he shared, about Canada since Confederation, should be mandatory for all students in Canadian universities - regardless of program. Recommend him? Highly.
Very passionate professor. Interesting class, with two written reports and a written final. Classes are pretty interesting (especially in the second half). Didn't take a ton of work. Would recommend as an option class. Nice guy, cares about his students.
As a history major this class was by far my favourite. Dr. Marshall is very enthusiastic and clear in his lectures. The material was really interesting and the papers were engaging and creative. He is a fair and easy marker. At times I found him a little hard to approach, but he will always help if asked. He is also very understanding of students.
I really liked him! He was very accommodating for me too as I was feeling pretty overwhelmed this semester. Great lecturer, you'll get a lot by going to class. He lectures with a passion that is very contagious and interesting. He always said "make up your own mind!" and that made it real fun and intellectually stimulating when writing stuff.
Good prof overall. Lectures are clear, passionate, and fairly entertaining. Exams are very fair, but the two essays are marked a lot harder. He is always willing to help students, but can be a little intimidating to approach. Lecture organization and class administration are both kept up with very well. Little class participation in lectures though
Dr. Marshall is such a great prof. Lectures are fantastic. He's a great orator with a keen eye for what interests students. Allows for ample creativity with all his assignments which is great. You will do well if you put in the effort. Marking is fair. Lots of info to take ins but you can choose to write what interests you most on the final exam.
Best prof I have ever had at the UofC. Really awesome
I normally dislike Canadian history, but Marshall made it bearable. His lectures were interesting and engaging, and he used a lot of external materials to keep interest. Textbook was awful, and pretty unnecessary. Graded through two written assignments and a written final, which had a study guide. He marks fairly, and proofs TA grading! Great prof!
He is very knowledgeable and lectures were interesting and not boring. I highly recommend this course as an option to boost your GPA. The 2 Essays and Final are marked by the TA's so as long as you find out from them what they are looking for you will do well.
Such a fantastic prof. Lectures are amazing and interesting. Super accommodating of students and a very fair marker. Allows for ample creativity for projects which is nice. I learned a lot from this class. He lectures mostly from memory and tells history like a story. A solid choice if you are a history major or not. Tests on lecture mostly.
Best prof at U of C hands down. Lectures you will actually want to go because he delivers them like amazing stories. Respectful, kind, brilliant, a total inspiration to students. He can be a bit unapproachable but crack the exterior and he is an amazing man.
Super nice guy!! He seems really intimidating at first but he is actually very kind and is willing to answer any questions. I enjoyed HTST 211 mainly because of Dr. Marshall, not because of the subject matter. The one issue I had was that he doesn't post or use any notes, the only notes you will have are the ones you write! Textbook was used a lot
Took this class my third year as an easy A, and it was. Dr. Marshall is a fantastic lecturer and a fair marker, he's clear and concise and doesn't try to trick you on midterms. His expectations are clear of the 3 papers and final exam he required. I would recommend him to anyone interested in taking a history course
This prof is really awesome. Took as an option course and got an easy A. You have to show up and write notes because he does not post notes but he is really easy and interesting to listen to. The topics are very interesting and fun to learn about. Youre only graded on three essays but he is a very fair marker and theyre straight forward essays.
I cannot recommend Dr. Marshall enough! His lectures were well organized but as stated below, he does not post notes. Be prepared to take notes quickly in lecture. He does not try to trick his students and wants his students to do well, so everything was straight forward. He kept his lectures engaging and it was a great class!
Really, really good prof. Didn't assign much work, which was nice (there were just two written assignments and a take-home final for this class). He doesn't post notes online, so showing up to lectures is important, but his lectures are so enjoyable that you'll want to go anyway. Would definitely recommend for both history majors and non-majors.
I really enjoyed this class with Dr. Marshall. The workload wasn't too bad, two papers and a final take-home exam. He doesn't post notes so showing up to class is really important, but he lectures in a chronological, story-like way so his material is easy to grasp and makes sense. I found he marked easier than the TA (who graded the papers).
Absolutely amazing prof!! One of the only classes I was ever excited to attend every week. Very fair grader, if you pick a risky/tough topic to research you'll likely be rewarded. He cares about his students & effort they put in their select topic. He isn't picky about perfect grammer/citations. Overall, best prof I've had, he's an inspiration!!!
10/10
Hands down my favourite prof of the sem. His lectures were the only ones I really looked forward to go to. Ask any of his students and they'll say he really loves what he teaches. Marks easier than his TA's and provides good feedback. Had nothing posted on d2l except for the course outline so you'll need to go to class for notes. Easy GPA booster.
HTST 211 with Dr. Marshall is a fantastic class. He is honest, accurate and marks papers relatively quickly. He leaves paragraphs worth of advise on each paper handed back.
You should attend lectures because he doesnt post his notes on d2l and even in class he only shows pictures in the powerpoint. I didnt use the textbook because if you have good notes you wont need it at all and he gives you additional resources for the assignments. Overall, he made lectures interesting and was very nice and understanding.
Attending lectures and taking notes is a must, as he doesn't post notes. He delivers the content in an engaging way, which makes class enjoyable. Your grade is based off 3 papers and a take home final, so if writing is your strong point, you will do well.
Very good lectures although not super mandatory to go to. Super easy A if you put in an ounce of work otherwise it should be at the very least an easy pass. Textbook is somewhat helpful although not really needed
The best prof at UofC. You MUST attend lectures cause he wont post anything online. But his lectures are fun and you will want to be there. As long as you are good at writing essays you will do amazing; the 2 assignments were research essays while final essay was based on the lectures. First half material of class was more interesting than rest.
Dr. Marshall really knows his stuff, his lectures are great because you can tell he really cares about what hes teaching. Hes a very fair marker, with a little effort an A or A+ on his papers arent impossible. But most importantly he simply cares about his students and what hes teaching!
Such a gem! Go to class and pay attention and you are all set. Class material on it self was boring but he made it interesting and fun! If you are good at writing essays then take classes with him. One of the best profs around.
Such an adorable and kind human. He has a good heart and cares about students' mental health. Gives pretty good feedback on assignments along with the TAs. He's clearly very passionate about history and makes it enjoyable even if you're not a history person and also helps you see things in a new light. 10/10 would recommend.
He makes videos to clarify and outline the assignments and basically states what is expected or what he is looking for in the assignment which I found to be very helpful. One of my favorite profs so far. He is pretty straightforward in lectures but still interesting and very informative often better than the textbook.
Best Professor EVER! I love history, but even if you don't I guarantee you'll love this class. If you take this course while were still online, I highly recommend you attend the weekly optional zoom sessions. He willingly answers any questions big or small and it's a great opportunity to learn a bit more in-depth!
Dr. Marshall is best prof I had so far. Such a kind man who cares about the mental health of his students. He is super understanding of the situation going on in the world right now and will do anything to help. Gave awesome feedback on essays and the TA's were also great. Put in some effort on the assignments and it's an easy A. Great class!
Amazing professor, and an even more amazing person. By far my favorite professor I've had at UofC. 10/10 fantastic class, would recommend to anyone.
One of the best profs Ive taken. Usually hate Canadian history but he made it interesting. You dont need the textbook if you watch all his lectures and take notes. Gave lots of feedback and handed back exams and papers quick which is a rarity for history profs. Super accompanying and genuinely cares for his students.
Best history professor I've had. Course is all essays so beware, this said he is a fair grader and is happy to help. Assignments give you freedom to develop your own voice and are not restrictive. Course is lecture oriented. Lecture's are highly engaging and well done. Very knowledge, very open to intellectual conversations with students.
I loved this class! I skipped the long low-key boring lectures and opted to just read the text book, A's on every paper. No quizzes/group projects, just writing assignments.
Marshall is a total beauty. Would definitely take again. His lectures even on zoom are engaging and he puts alot of work into them. He really is a great speaker and his classes were one of the only ones I have really enjoyed online. He is a pretty chill marker if you put effort in. Definitely would take one of his classes again.
Dr. Marshall was good. I liked that there were more graded components then the midterm, paper & final of most 400 level history classes. I appreciated there was a little more direction for the book report & paper with an assigned list of books/topics to choose from. I wish he graded the papers as he loved my proposal but the TA gave me a low grade.
Wow - what an amazing professor. Dr. Marshall is clearly very passionate & knowledgeable about what he teaches. Attend lectures, take notes, textbook optional but helpful - I did not use. Open to discussions with students and offers thought provoking questions. Can't wait to take another course with him again, can't recommend highly enough!
Not at all content heavy. Lots of writing so if you don't like essays, maybe another class would do. A little bit intimidating but very welcoming if you speak with him after class or during office hours. Would probably like you if you asked lots of questions.
Dr.Marshall is really excellent. He always helps students you can get good marks on their papers. The purpose of his teaching is clear so that you can get what you are writing. At the same time, you must read the textbook and the information he gives, which is very important. I will definitely recommend him from history major.
Although the material was a bit dull at times, Marshall always made an effort to be engaging. Very fair grader on essays. Your entire grade consists of three essays and a take-home exam, which were all pretty straight-forward. Overall was a super nice prof and would definitely take again as a non-history major.
Dr Marshall was an amazing prof. He gave me multiple extensions when I desperately needed them, and the assignments were generously graded. The lectures were super interesting and never got boring. Would definitely recommend!
Overall Marshall is a caring and nice professor, and an amazing and caring human being in general. This class is quite paper heavy so if that aint your thing pick a different class, papers are graded fairly. However, I will say that the lectures were composed of pictures and Marshall often went to fast, but the textbook filled the gaps. Good Class.
Dr. Marshall is the GOAT! lectures are awesome, he is so intelligent and clearly passionate. Also cares a lot about his students, easy grader, and will always help if you need it! best prof on campus. Heads up though his classes are all papers!
Dr.Marshall is by far one of the best professors I have had. His lectures are entertaining and easy to follow, he gave us 2 essays and a final paper all easy criteria and good feedback. He was very helpful if you have any questions and he always went the extra mile to make sure students succeed. I would certainly recommend any courses he gives!!
Marshall is wonderful! He is engaging and clearly passionate about the topics he discusses. This particular class was only marked on very few things. However, they were both quite simple tasks, and he made the process clear and easy to follow for an A. Very laid-back and almost relaxing class, but it was never boring, and I would highly recommend.
Very Tough grader and not willing to discuss or change marks when Emailed.
His lectures are extremely interesting and informative, and he doesn't resort to testing you on facts and figures. All graded work was written. I've never had a prof state that they will gladly read your submission and re-grade it (he did mine within a day of requesting it) if you believe that the TA did not mark it fairly. Try and you'll succeed.
All papers, but he marks extremely fair, gives in-depth and helpful feedback, and is accommodating with extensions. Attending class is mandatory to do well on the final papers, but he is the most engaging lecturer I have ever had and he truly makes mundane topics interesting. I would take every class with him if I could!
Marshall is such a legend. I looked forward to his class every day. While he does assign textbooks, they are not necessary to pass. I would recommend getting them though if you are aiming for an A/A+ as they're good resources for the papers. His feedback is useful, and he is very reachable outside of class. 10/10 would recommend.
Marshall is great the lectures were incredible and he always gives extensions and helps students. The only issue I had was he would start new concepts when there was 5 minutes left so it would slightly mess up the course timeline but it was fine. Lectures are really all you need to do great.
GOAT. Take all his classes, his lectures are really amazing. And he's also super helpful when it comes to writing papers
Dr. Marshall is a fantastic professor! He is an engaging lecturer and the content he presents is so interesting. I've learned a lot in his classes and would definitely take more with him. I didn't use the textbook, all the information you need is in his lecture material. He posts slides but no notes, attending class and taking notes is important.
Dr. Marshall has to be one of the best professors at UofC. He cares deeply about his students he even remembers many of us by name. He always gives amazing feedback on assignments so you know where you lost marks and why. His lectures are awesome and he always has some cool stories or funny jokes to keep you entertained. 10/10 would recommend.
Dr. Marshall was great, this will probably go down as one of my fave courses, and I'm not even a History major. The lectures were great, he's very knowledgeable. He created a calm and relaxing lecture space and I learned a lot about Canadian pop culture.
If you have the chance to take a class with Professor Marshall, do it. This man is such a joy to talk with after class, and has such a passion for teaching. He is always helpful when emailing, I sent over my paper multiple times to see if I was grasping the assignment and he always replies with helpful feedback.
Took this as an elective and history is not my forte by any means, but he made the content enjoyable! I suggest not regularly skipping class because the notes you take during his lectures will aid you when writing your papers. The textbook was only really needed during the take-home final exam, otherwise you don't have to keep up with the readings.
Marshall is a gem. Assignment expectations were clear, gave super helpful feedback, gives good lectures. No complaints about the guy.
Anyone who's anyone will tell you Marshall is a diamond! Amazing guy, has converted many students to history majors, has changed my life multiple times! My advice for any young student is to take one of his courses ASAP. You'll quickly learn you were meant to go into history :)))
Dr. Marshall gives amazing lectures, his class is like watching an intense movie which made it very enjoyable. I was so worried for this class since I am not a history buff but I genuinely found myself enjoying his classes and the way he tells history. If he was teaching another class I would 100% take it.
hes really funny and fair
Best prof I have had. He is super nice, interesting, and very easy to talk to. I started the class getting Bs, went to him and the TAs for help, and ended with an A. If you go to the lectures he gives you hints on the exam, and the assignments are decently easy and interesting. I thought Canadas history was boring, but not with Marshall.
