bad attitude
The most unknowledgeable theory teacher I have ever had. Not open to new ideas, self-centered. Doesn't lecture, throws hissy-fits. Favoritism is obvious.
He's a cool professor.
kooky and entertaining when he's in a good mood...very knowledgable in theory...he gets his points across very clearly...he is set in his ways...but you have to be a little yeilding too....each prof teaches theory different...get over yourself
An amazing musician with incredible philosophies. He simply has a diffucult time applying them. When he is in a good mood, he is definatley an amazing director with a pretty good sense of humor. His bad mood is what gives him a bad image, unfortunaley.
Never met this man, but I already know he's a selfish and inconsiderate person. I was supposed to interview him for a project, he agreed to it, blew me off and stood me up, i got a zero. thanks band man

Mr., I mean... Dr. Martyunuik is not a good teacher. stuck up (Having a Phd does not make you god), insulting to his students. He comes into the band to conduct a piece, the first thing he says is "this is great for high school bands" (we'll in
Lack of experience makes him not know what he's doing. He then gets frustrated and flips out about stupid ****. Easy to get along with, just get on his good side.
He'd be hot if he wasn't such a jerk.
I believe Dr. Martynuik to be a very helpful and knowledgable professor. Yes, sometimes his temper can flare a little, but I have never known him to intimidate or scare students like some profs... just wants things done well, esp. w/the rep. of the band.
Martynuik is a great teacher on the field and also entertaining. MB/DI class taught by him were the only two classes I never missed once at IUP. He may be a little ornery occais but the lessons you learn from him will be worth it. Never had a problem.
dr. martynuik is demanding but for good reasons. on the field, he tries to bring the best out of everyone so that people will be amazed when the band performs. in the classroom, he is very easy to talk to and is very helpful.
amazing and demanding teacher...expects results and good ones at that...pushes u to be at ur max and encourages enthusiam and growth both in the class and out---theory 3 was amazing b/c of him
I don't get him sometimes. He's a good teacher for what he wants, but I'm worried about next semester when I have Perlongo or Staples. It's going to be very different and I'm probably going to be very behind.
I wish every class could be taught by him. I absolutely loved his class and learned more in theory3 than I have in my entire ed. career. He was always willing to help and broaden musical horizons. Class was challenging but in a great way, I actually WANTED to do my hw for once. Take him!
If you like getting humiliated and being sworn at , take this class. He has the temper of five year old. Great guy as long as your completely up his ass!!! If you can deal with his unpredictable mood swings, his class is not too bad for theory IV and Band.
If I had to pick between gouging out my eyes and having to listen to this man scream and yell (like he does on a daily basis), I would have to go with gouging out my eyes. It's very unfortunate how intelligent in his field, yet, how mentally unstable this man is.

Needs to pull his head out of his ass. He is highly skilled and gets results. But there are other ways than humiliating someone in front of the whole band, i felt sorry for them. Encourages enthusiasm but needs mental help with his temper.
Although he has a slight temper problem, its only because we made it so difficult for him. The only reason he has a temper is because he has a very difficult job to perform and many times the members of the band can be very difficult to deal with. Overall my first impression of college mb was good.
This prof knows his stuff, but is very short tempered. He is very demanding also that you do things 100 percent his way or you will pay in your grade. I wouldnt take this guy again unless I had no other choice.
He is one great guy!! Helps you out with problems, even if they don't pertain to marching band. Gives the band his all. Great guy!! Makes the IUP marching band better than it was
Makes the IUP marching band better than it ever was. he works hard because he has to deal with immature, difficult people who just complain and make his job harder
Dude is a jackass plain and simple. I got full on yelled at in the hall way for needing to miss one rehearsal for a death in the immediate fam. He needs to remember that things like that will come back to haunt his miserable ass. Really intelligent, knows a lot, and the marching band sounds Great.
Great Guy. Always willing to help. Really knows his music. Always there for you. Has made the IUP marching band better than it has ever been. He has done a great job, considering he puts up with immature people.
He is very elitist in his methods; tends to be very condescending to his students; especially in marching band, but also in theory, orchestration, and his unfortunate opportunities to conduct the concert bands at IUP. He also doesn't change his conducting between marching band and concert band.
He guest conducted an ensemble I play in. If you made a mistake he was very rude and made you feel like a terrible musician...also didn't offer very good suggestions on how to improve...pretty much just yelled.
possibly the largest waste of talent I have ever seen!!!the man is a bear, just waiting for someone to screw up so he can attack them. Terrible composer, if he thinks his compositions sound good, he'd better think again. it's a shame that his jackass attitude has spread to others in the department.

Great guy
He is a great band director and the band sounds and looks great. He does have a bit of a short temper but if people would stop being so lazy and learn their music and dots he wouldn't have to get so upset. If you get on his good side and stay there you shouldn't have any problems with him.
This man is a genius! If you're looking for an easy way out, you shouldn't take him, but if you care about your education and want to know other perspectives on music...take him! If he taught more classes, I would take them! He's a great guy and one of the best profs in the dept.
One of the most interesting teachers I have ever met. Really gave a different view of music. Doesnt teach from the text, but from actual pieces of music because real music is what were gonna have to deal with. Loved him!
This man is completely amazing with music. If he taught more classes here, I would take him! He's a really cool guy, just turn in your work on time and come to rehearsal on time! That IS kind of what college is for, people. TAKE HIM you will learn so much!!
I wish that he taught more classes here because he is a GREAT prof, and so amazing with anything dealing with music. He actually cares about his students and will help in any way he can when asked. Never had a better learning experience! TAKE HIM!
An absolutely brilliant guy. But, if you cannot get on his "good side", then consider yourself forgotten. I know... I am one of the forgotten people.
In 2001 Dr M took over the marching band. He is a very good arranger and I'm sure anyone who takes his arranging courses will benefit from his teaching, but as director of the marching band, he lacked self control and was known to lose his temper quite a few times. He is a nice and hip guy if you are on his good side. But he can be a real SOB if you're on his bad side. His style of directing and selecting music for the Marching Band has taken it in a new direction that in the past, but its his band now

I think marty is great! yeah..he can have a short temper...but some people are being stupid. he's very intelligent...who else can calculate drill? who else calculates a graph and writes it on the cement with sidewalk chalk to mathematically show the band what to do? no one that i know...
genius. sure he can get angry, but so what. get over it.
Plays favorites. Lets students un 90% of the class, therefore, there often much embarassment, hazing, and general separation. The man is bipolar, happy one minute, screaming the next. If you can get on his good side, you've got it made. That takes virtually an eternity. Can be malicious.
I think Dr. M deserves a little more credit that what he gets. He spends countless hours designing a show for a 200 member marching band, and i think that is quite amazing. I've been here for 4 years and have learned so much about leadership from my experiences in the band. He's awesome.
Dr. m. isn't as stuffy as he used to be. His classes are alot more interesting and fun. Besides he's looking a whole lot more handsome this semister.
Finally, someone who gives this ensemble dignity again. Dr. M transformed the Wind Ensemble and Symphony Band into a musical, colorful and ultimatley educational experience. He demands excellence, does not settle like other band directors at the school. His methodology is current and effective. He should be the director of bands at IUP.
Marching Band for four years has been an amazing experience with this guy. We're well taught, sound and look great, and play better music than anyone else out there. He's pretty amusing during rehearsal too, good sense of humor! Take as many classes with him as you can, and you won't be disapointed!
I think Dr. Martynuik is a great professor. He has done amazing things with the marching band since he came here in 2001. People who have a problem with him probably couldn't take the heat or pressure that's placed upon members of the ensemble. It's college kids, stuff isn't handed to you anymore, you need to start living up to expectations.
Marty is an amazing man. I absolutely love him to death. Sure he has a temper, but you just have to brush it off. He has done amazing things with the marching band. I don't think there is a better person out there for the job, and I love his sense of humor.
The man is a genious. Attendance is mandatory, and the only reason he yelled this eyar was cuz people couldnt drag their asses to MARCHING BAND. You joined so GO TO PRACTICE! IUP mb is the best band in the states, i mean, he MADE it that way. Wish he taught more classes.
I don't know if it's possible to love yourself more than this guy. He is not a genius and he has not done good things for the marching band. Most people would not rate the IUP marching band in the top 3 in the state, and that's JUST the state. The band under him is lack luster now and on too many occasions down right embarrassing because of him.
Marty is totally amazing. People may have a problem because he's tough and yells at mb, but seriously, you learn and the man is smart, but can also teach. Honestly, I have so much respect for him and what he can do. And he's really funny too, love his sarcasm.
This man is at genius level. Unfortunately, this gets in the way with his teaching skills.has serious anger issues and makes degrading comments.Only favors those who 'prove their worth'- his job is to mold professionals and build our confidence as musicians and educators, not to strip students down until they only want to do well out of fear.
People obviously have their own opinions of Dr. Martynuik, but the bottom line is he is himself. I have unlimited respect for this man. He is straight up with no BS, great sense of humor, and he showed a personable side to me also. Yes, he has a temper, but he gets in his moods because he cares. He is what I hope to be as a teacher someday.
Completely unprofessional. Temper tantrums and inappropriate with students. Only people who like him are afraid of him and just thankful he hasn't blown up on them yet. Moody, pissy, and childish. A disgrace to the music program at IUP. Setting a horrible example.
Martynuik has a very unpredictable, explosive temper. If you aren't a great musician or marcher, prepare for humiliation and degradation. He's a good theorist and composer, but my experiences with him in ensembles were far too stressful for me to ever take a class with him. People say he's different in class, but I don't buy it.
This man is a genius. The only problem is this temper. He has gotten better since I have been at IUP, but his prior behavior in ensembles has been nearly unacceptable. In theory classes though, he is an absolute genius and I am in awe of his vast knowledge. He is also very helpful and nice if you respect him.
Marty has come a long way since the year 2002. In 2005(marching band)he blew up once a week. 2009,once all season. His problem is that he cares too much. When student musicians miss simple phrases or if they can't do something (countless times over and over again)"then" he gets mad. I have never been scolded by the man. Probably cause I practice.
Temper? Yes. Why/When? Because college level musicians don't know their ****. He expects you to perform and think like a college level musician. It's really not that hard. If you take the chance to listen, you will learn more from him than anyone else in Cogswell (or the lot?) Practice, know your stuff. If he's happy, everyone's happy.
People are saying he'll be cool so long as you practice. Not true. He'll be cool so long as EVERYONE practices. Or as long as nothing in general is bothering him. The man cannot control his temper. Once he's mad about something, forget it. The entire rehearsal is shot. And he cares WAY too much about looking cool in front of his students.
He's a musical genius with a short fuse. His anger is rarely unjustified, although he can be cynical and sarcastic when an unexpected inconvenience arises. He has really done amazing things for the marching band, it's just a shame that a lot of the band members are motivated more by fear than they are their passion for music.
The majority of people on here have it correct. Dr. Martynuik can be the best thing that will ever happen to you during your musical career at IUP. If you attend each rehearsal prepared, you've nothing to worry about. I guarantee that 99% of the students who have left bad ratings were not prepared to be held accountable. Welcome to the real world.
There is a time for fun and a time for work. If you understand that concept, you will love Dr. Martynuik because he's great with both. Know your stuff, don't be too sensitive and you will be fine. No... you'll be better than fine. You'll have a blast.
This man is a genius and an excellent composer. He strives for excellence and perfection and puts 110% effort into everything, and that's what he expects from the band as well. Brush up on marching before band camp and PRACTICE. There is little room for error with him and the band in general. Attendance and punctuality are absolutely mandatory.
There is little doubt that he is one of the most musically proficient professors in the department and one of the smartest people at the university. But let's get one thing straight: his infamous temper is not averted if you're prepared; it's only averted if *everyone* is prepared *and* if he hasn't been dealing with idiots all day.
Rude, cranky, and has unrealistic expectations. Don't be surprised if he calls you stupid.
Easily the best professor at the Indiana University of Pennsylvania by far. He will teach you all that you need to know, and will expect much in return. The more you put into his classes, the more you will get out of them. Do not disappoint him.
By far one of the most unprofessional profs you'll ever meet. Get ready for toddler grade temper tantrums. I didn't pay to go to school to be insulted by this guy. Don't waste your time. Try to make it 4 years in Cogswell hall without crossing paths with this him, you'll thank me later.
So I had him for marching band and if you aren't respectful, you shouldn't bother doing marching band. He's very strict and has high expectations, but he pushes you because he knows you can do better. Has a fantastic sense of humor. Can be kinda scary, but you get used to it.
Fantastic Professor!! He is hard on his students in the marching band because hes knows our potential. We are the BEAST of the EAST. And I am grateful that Dr. Martynuik has continued to guide the legend to the point it is at today. Was. Is. And ever shall be.
MARCHING BAND, DO IT IF YOU CAN!!! He's strict, but he wants the best for us, and wants us to do good! He cares about his students. He is different outside of marching band too, so don't let that make you turn from him. He's a very nice guy.
Unprofessional, and overall not a nice person. Grading criteria was poorly explained. Said no textbook was required, then later required a textbook. Worst professor I had in the honors college yet. So glad I only had him for 6 weeks.
Very, VERY unprofessional. Had him for an art unit in honors, and he did not understand the way honors classes are structured. Was very unclear in his instructions and lashed out childishly when they were not followed absolutely perfectly. His communications with me were incredibly degrading and childish. Had to contact the dean.
