Tests did not include study guides for the long difficult tests. The amount of problems on the test made it very difficult to complete in one hour. Needs to put more effort into preparing the students for testing material.
tends to stray off the subject of math..., doesn't prepare students well for tests..., doesn't explain math examples well..., all in all, if you take him, you better schedule an appointment with a tutor! you're going to need it!
Tends to answer questions in most complicated manner, although at times demonstrates brilliance of conciseness. If 141 weren't mostly review of 131, I'd be struggling. Tests fair, no surprises, but brutal grader: If it's not exactly correct on the answer line, it's wrong; no partial credit, no error carried forward, etc. Overall, a "C" instructor.
I thought that his overall teaching style was not very informative. He seems like he enjoys not using plain english. Often, instead of being concise and to-the-point, he'll often stray from the subject and confuse the entire class. Whenever a our class did poorly on a test as a whole, he would lecture on how to study. IUf possible, do not take!
I ABSOLUTELY LOVE DAVID!!! HE'S WONDERFUL!! HIS TESTS ARE SUPER EASY...ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS FLIP THROUGH YOUR NOTES, HE PUTS THE SAME PROBLEMS JUST CHANGES THE VALUES. EASY A!!
Don't take him, please, you will be better of doing the business calc online. Trust Me. His Lectures are Useless, and you better attend the class. He takes the attendance and keep his eye on you. Tests are Reaaallllyyy Hard! And if you don't study yourself, you will not know anything. I was working my ass off, and still did poorly on tests.Depresin
He's a bit harsh! Long & difficult tests. And he failed me. Not recommended.
He is a very nice guy, but he doesn't teach in a way that students can understand.
This was by far the most terrible math professor I have ever taken. He didn't even use examples of problems when lecturing, and overall did not explain anything very well. Everyone in the class went to the math center for help. He aslso lectured us about studying, and not partying every night, when all of us where working are butts off.Do not take!
He is a relatively eay teacher. If your don't understand then its because your not paying attention. His tests are easy if you study. He gives study guides with page numbers and practice problems. He may not be the best teacher but he understands if you have stuff to do and can't be in his class. Also, homework only once a week.
He is a nice guy, but if a complete math geek (traveled to Europe to research math). He can teach things well, but he teaches very, very slowly. He is easily distracted and can take an entire class period going over a single question. Be prepared to read the book and get outside help if not everyone in your class is a genius. Otherwise a good guy.
If you can avoid taking him please do so! Outside help is a must. Test are very long and difficult. O.K. guy, but shows no mercy. Be ready for a tutor.
Worst teacher ever! he does not prepare students at all and blames his class for not studying when its he who isnt doing his job! i attended every class up until i decided i had enough and showing up and studying still didnt help! i spent a lot of time with tutors and would catch on after the test! he is ZERO help!
I have had him for both 150 & 153. He is a great teacher, these previous comments are probably people who don't do well in math to begin with. DO THE HOMEWORK! It will help you with the tests. If you don't understand something, MEET WITH HIM IN HIS OFFICE! He was extremely helpful outside of class. GREAT TEACHER!
Got an A in every other math class except this. Grades on an all or nothing basis and does not believe in partial credit (Do you want your family flying on a plain built by partial credit people?) I spent a good 3 hours a day in the math center doing hw and practicing but it was not enough for this summer class. Tells anyone they dont practice hw
He is an ok teacher. I like math so I did good in it. A lot of people struggled out of 24 people in the class 13 dropped! He hates criticism and blames his students if he does a problem wrong. Test aren't impossible. You have to be dedicated... Overall was not horrible but take a different teacher if you aren't good at math!
He talks so much that you have no idea what he's trying to say. The material would be easy if he would just spit it out! And no partial credit on tests? WTF. No wonder everyone is failing.
Nice enough guy, but he doesn't teach, he just presents textbook examples. If you don't understand it, he seems baffled. He also isn't very tolerant of students who ask questions or clarifications. He gives a big sigh, and then begrudgingly answers the question. He does not provide HW prob, this is students job to determine. Tests = longhard
I had 2 classes with him this summer. Contrary to the comments on here, he's a good teacher. He's a very nice guy, kinda dorky about math history. Tests could be hard , but I felt 70% of the questions were straight from the textbook& study guides-if you practiced problems enough, you were fine. He encouraged students to ask questions!!!
Very intelligent prof, but I do not recommend him. The material is not hard, but he makes it hard. His lectures are more detailed and difficult than they need to be. His tests are very difficult. He's not very flexible at all. Unless you are brilliant at math, I recommend you take a different prof. He does not prepare the students well for th
He talks too much. The material really isnt that hard, but hes awful at explaining how it works. I just keep asking questions and having him do another example to piss him off because when i look around the room, i see a lot of confused faces but no one wants to raise their hand, so i do it for them :D
I taught myself out of the book ended up droping B/C it was pointlessI never drop classes. This was my 1st math class out of HS SCARY I looked at wat other ppl said B4 school started n was like O ppl say hes bad just B/C they lazy. well Im not lazy i would go 2 the math lab4 2hrs get help n still got a C on the test he does not give partial credit!
He would seriously spend the 1st 20min of class going over stupid "FUN" facts of numbers (wutever the date was) this is college not HS i care how my time is spent afterall i pay $100 and HR. then b/c we waisted 20min we would not go over wat should b covered n he still would expect us to kno how 2 do it! plus test are hard b.c no patial credit
He teaches by showing pages from the book on PowerPoint. He rarely works problems out start to finish on the board, and when he does, he makes mistakes. If you take him, be prepared to do a lot of work on your own. I felt I would have been better off taking an online class with a better teacher since I ended up teaching myself everything anyway.
THIS IS THE FIRST CLASS I EVER DROPPED!!!He wastes essential time (that I wasted scholarship money on).No partial credit on tests, which are extremely difficult.Everyone is confused. He does not use powerpoints or handouts.I like Calculus: MCGUIRE MAKES ME HATE IT!!!!!!!!!Take an online class (teaching yourself either way).
THERE IS NOTHING GOOD ABOUT THIS CLASS!!! Except...I met my amazing boyfriend, best thing that ever happened...Then, I dropped it. McGuire has as much of a decrepit mind as body, and would be better off retiring than teaching! -Peace-
This teacher is TERRIBLE, i have YET to find a good math 170 teacher.. every day in this class makes me feel horrible about myself..DO NOT TAKE HIM!!!!!!!! you will regret it!
brilliant man but can't teach. I'm sure I could have done a lot more after class but I don't think that a student who pays good money for a class has to take as much time out of class to learn the material. And, the tests are long and no partial credit. Take him if you are really dedicated in the subject, if not, move on!
does anyone else think he looks like george washington!? he walks around like he owns the place. doesnt teach anything besides that there are 11 lights on the ceiling bc it is the 11th day of the month. cooool
McGuire is the most horrid teacher I have ever had. He is probably had about 12 facelifts in his his life. His teaching is non-existent, textbook is useless and he doesnt assign homework so you are pretty much screwed. He expects you to learn all of the work from an outside tutor. I went to every class that started at 730 and still failed. AVOID
He was VERY hard to understand and didn't teach well. EVERYONE, including me, in the class were getting terrible grades on tests, which he'd end up curving. He can't teach and his class is boring. I ended up dropping because the class was so bad.
Not only does he fly through a concept without explanation, he also stands right in front of the board so no one can see it. If you ask a question, he huffs, makes a degrading comment, and then explains it on the board (which he's covering). Also be prepared to learn 5 concepts in the last 2 weeks of class since he has poor time management as well
If you want someone to hold your hand or an easy "A" look elsewhere. If you're looking for someone to challenge you and make you work, this is your class. No, there is no homework, but he encourages you to take it on yourself and work the chapter problems. I found that he's more than happy to help if you make an effort.
He is good at math, he knows what he's doing. Explaining it, he sucks. He'll randomly do a problem, and the whole time you have no idea why he did that or how he knew how to do it. He's good at math, but as far as teaching it, I wouldn't take another one of his classes again.
This man is a smart man and knows what he is doing, but doesnt explain why or how he is doing it. He just randomly continues during a problem. He goes through the chapters way to fast. Dont expect this to be an easy class.
I droped his class because he didn't teach well. I am not very good at math and this class stands in my way i am retaking it with a new professor this guy is smart but doesent teach just shows you how to do it breifly and quickly.
To be bruttaly honest, do not take this teacher. He by all means is a very intelligent person but a very demeaning person too. he makes sure you know he is better then you. he does not teach, just shows the work in the problems. i have gotten a's in math my whole life except here. he takes the hardest problems from section and uses those for tests
Ok.. So everyone told me dont take him hes horrible, i didnt listen! He grades horrible, you either get the right answer or not.. Your grade is based only on tests.. He does NOT explain the problems, he does assume his students are genious and by just going trough one problem from a powerpoint youll know everything! DNt waste your time. Honestly i though these comments were lies but they werent i had to learn the hard way n now i will be retaking it but NOT with him!
Warning
Very easy to follow if you follow
This class was terrible, and I basically taught myself the course. Homework is NEVER collected so your grade depends solely upon tests/quizzes which were always extremely difficult due to his lacking ability to teach.. If at all possible, take this class with ANY OTHER TEACHER..
This teacher is the worst teacher I've ever come across. DO NOT HAVE HIM. He is absolutely terrible. McGuire has this mindset that all of his students are geniuses and will ace every exam, and if someone does poorly, it's because they don't study. He has to prove to you that he knows more than you, and makes no sense in his teaching skills. BEWARE!
Extremely hard teacher to follow didn't explain problems at all expected you to know the work before class. the only way I received an A was teaching myself the material before he taught it.
Overall a very good teacher, requires YOU to work.. prepares you for University level of education...
He barely touches on the topics in class and requires you to work outside of class to further understand them. His tests are difficult but it's possible to get an A. His teaching requires you to spend A LOT of time outside of class. He would often not show problems we had questions on if they were too long. He would say no and move on.
No partial credit on tests. Enough said
Honestly, he's one of the better instructors I've ever had (including university studies). Yes, you have to work outside of class. Yes, you have to show up. No, you won't get 8/10 points on a question if you only got the first part correct. He is incredibly fair, allows for many questions to be asked, and his tests are very straight-forward.
Very hard class and teacher. No partial credit on anything. He is very condescending to his students, but does offer to answer any questions on homework or tests. Only managed to pass this class by teaching myself from the book... good luck if you have this teacher.
I had no choice but to take him during an accelerated summer course. He can be very frustrating but it forced me to step my game up. He does offer partial credit sometimes but is generally stricter than average. Your grade is based on tests only. He is willing to go over material but sometimes it's hard to communicate w/ him.
Great Teacher for summer course was very understanding and gave many opportunities to raise once grade.
Mr.McGuire is more old fashioned with his teaching techniques. He's nice and he wants his students to pass, but he he wont draw a picture for you. He's tough, but not unbearable. I recommend getting help from the math lab instead of trying to set up a day with him. He's not very good with emails.
Horrible teacher. I had to drop. Gets angry with you if you don't get the material. Assigns homework, but its never graded. Like everyone else says, he knows math well, but he can't teach at all. Half the class dropped out. One of the tests, the class average was a 37% or something. He thought a class average of 70% was GOOD. Avoid at all costs.
Even though he doesn't collect homework, you still NEED to do it. It helps you SO much. I took his class last semester and never did the homework; I ended up having to drop. This semester, I did it all and studied and got a B. He's a great teacher and always jokes with the class. If you treat him with respect, then you'll get the same in return.
RUN!!!!!! HORRIBLE! WORST TEACHER EVER!
He's not a mean guy but the tests are too hard compared to the homework, he just needs to prepare students for the tests better
This professor does not help you, his tests are too hard. He gives study guides but the test is never like what you're studying. The only grades are tests and the final. The only good thing about him is that he gives extra credit for showing up and he drops the lowest test grade. I WOULD HIGHLY RECOMMEND RUNNING AWAY FROM THIS GUY, NOT WORTH IT.
Professor is extremely helpful, answers all questions posed, and even tells you if the question you asked isn't going to be useful on the next test. People who dropped his course did so because of a lack of time put into the course, it is a very hard course, because of the nature of calculus. (only a calc teacher). Highly Recommend.
he is very nice and loves to answer any questions you have about math. but i got frustrated when it came to the tests its like all the questions were set up so much different then the homework very confusing and its also frustrating he only takes test grades and if you do bad on them he just says you don't study enough study harder frustrating
This was the first class I ever had to drop because I was failing. I've never even gotten a C in a class before! Yes, I understand that you have to do all the homework and get extra help and really put time into this class, but the tests he gives are just impossible! NO partial credit?! Don't waste your time.
Calculus II is a very difficult class but Professor McGuire made it bearable. He expects students to put the time and effort in but he provides students with all the tools they need to succeed if they are willing to make the effort. I highly recommend
I personally thought the class was really hard, but Im very bad at math. However he is a great teacher and explains the subject very clearly. Hes really nice and funny and gives extra credit points if you never miss a class. He doesnt collect homework as a grade but at the end of the semester he drops your lowest test grade. I highly recommend him.
I felt as if he rushes through the lessons every class period. I asked a lot of questions during class, so that I wont be confused when I get home. He doesn't collect HW He only offered one extra credit opportunity which didn't help. He likes answering questions. I don't recommend him as a teacher if you struggle with math.
Really confusing, and rushes. You don't have partial credit on tests, which are the only things he collects for a grade. Mess one thing up, and you lose all your points for that question. Even if you put in the time and understand the material, it's really hard to pass this class, and most drop before the end of the semester.
Worst teacher ever, took him for summer school. doesnt explain anything. test are completely different from the homework and is a rude teacher. told my class you cant work and be a student. take some other teacher if you can!!
Very rude to students. Makes you feel dumb whenever you ask him a question. Doesn't not explain lessons very well and rushes through them. Tests are impossible and so much different from the study guides. STAY AWAY
He just can't be a teacher.
Absolutely hated this class. He doesn't explain things and makes you feel dumb when asking a question. Base all your grades off your test and exams! Horrible teacher!!
If you do the homework and actively try to understand the material you will be fine. He doesn't try to trick you too much on exams. I think he's great preparation for university level math courses since he has high expectations for his students.
He does not explain anything. You are better off missing class and reading the whole math book.
He is extremely passionate about math. The only grades are Tests. No quizzes. but he does hand out extra credit every now and then. and he gives you points just for attending. Also, he only grades on final answer so even if the work is 100% right but you somehow get the wrong answer, it doesn't matter. overall though, i really like him.
David McGuire is a great instructor. What matters is the kind of student you are. If you know that you do not study and expect the instructor to hold your hand you must still be ignorant of how things work. As long as you put in the time to study then he will give the time necessary for a problem. Took a summer session and was happy I did good prof
Calculus two in general isn't easy, it doesn't matter who you take. McGuire is a nice person and will try to answer any questions he can without putting the whole class further behind than necessary. Does not acceptgrade homework. Testsquests are what matter. Just study, ask questions, and go to the tutoring center and you should be fine.
Mr. Mguire is nice and is more than willing to answer all questions. He assigns homework but not to collect. It's only for you to gain practice for the test. Do all homework and really learn the methods and you can pass all test. He gives study guides right b4 test so it's really no surprise what will be on there. Will take again for higher math.
Gave homework without explaining how to do it but answered questions the next day. Very easy to fall behind. Only grades tests, no extra credit. Sense of humor falls short. Very boring, not engaging.
He devoted tons of class time for questions, if anything was unclear it was the student's fault. Few tests but offers lots of prep time and clear study guides. As long as you show up for class and ask questions you will pass him easily. All fair and clear at least to me. Would take again.
He is a very good teacher. Answers all questions and makes sure you understand. Only grades test but gives homework for your practice and doesn't give many tests either. Good humor. Gives points just for showing up for class. Would take him again.
please avoid this teacher if you can.
He does not teach well. He discusses about pointless stuff and expects everyone to know the material. Do not take him especially if math is not your strong suit.
The worst teacher ever. only grades tests & does no partial credit. if i put 44 not 1 he would mark the whole question wrong even though they are the same exact thing. told us students to change our majors. I have never struggled in a math class. But when i asked him for help he said it is my own fault. 13 out of 30 kids dropped from my class.
Professor McGuire explains concepts extremely simply, and does practice problems to ensure that students understand. His study guide is word-for-word what will be on the exam, and he even gives you what problems to study. He doesn't give partial credit, which is why the ratings aren't good. Just study the problems on study guide & it's an easy A.
Gives homework but is never due. Only grades tests. Test are difficult. Miss a question by just a negative sign the whole question is marked wrong. No partial credit. Will insult your intelligence and then mess up teaching on the board daily.
By far one of the worst teachers I have ever had at JJC. He would rush through concepts and explain everything with very little detail. The class average for the first exam was around a 30%. DO NOT TAKE.
Had to take this class on Tuesday's and Thursdays because of work and life, he spent most of the beginning of his lectures basically shaming us because "Math is a repetition type of learning" and because we didn't take a daily class. He's good at teaching, but his persona is just awful. Wouldn't take.
No graded homework. Does not give partial credit on tests or corrects your work. He insults the intelligence of every student taking his class, and expects you to be able to "wake up at 2am and do these math problems with your eyes closed". My entire class asked for a review day because we wanted more practice, and he refused.
He expects you to do large homework assignments but wont take them for points. If youre failing he wont allow any extra credit assignments or provide any actual help, just tell you to visit the tutors. He likes to put trick questions on his tests, especially on ones he knew the class was struggling with. He also rants about how the class is "lazy"
Although many of these people give him a bad rap he's not a terrible teacher. He knows exactly what he's doing, and expects students to try their hardest. Plus he gives out study guides that have all the topics that will be covered on the test. Doesn't give partial credit, but gives a very good reason why.
Anyone that says he does not explain the material is wrong. His class is definitely difficult but he knows exactly what he is doing and he shows the class how to do many problems on the board. Most people just sit through class silently and don't learn but if you pay attention and ask questions he will go through any problems you have.
Very clear when he teaches. Always solves a problem step by step and makes sure everyone knows it before moving on.
I had to retake Math 094 for the second time and Professor McGuire helped me become more confident in math and made sure everyone in the class understood the criteria before moving onto the next criteria. The homework is straight out of the book. If you struggle with math like I did I recommend this professor. He'll make you feel more confident!!
Dave was impossible to follow. He never really answered questions and did not help outside of class, if possible do no take his class.
Does NOT give partial credit. The answer is either right or wrong, no inbetween! He does not look at how you got to your answer, just the answer itself. He also likes to ramble and always uses his full time, even on test days.
Your grade depends on how you do on exams. You will not be given partial credit on exams. He does not help and sometimes gets annoyed with students who ask simple questions that he already knew the answer to. Majority of my class was borderline D/C.
No partial credit, it's either right or wrong. His teaching is hard to follow, he does a lot of work in his head and jumps ahead. Easy to lose track. If possible, pick a different professor because this guy has no mercy. His study guides for exams are homework problems which don't help with exams.
Not a great teacher at all. After tests that the whole class didn't do well on, he would scold us rather than help us. Every problem turned into a lecturish rant about how stupid we were. Not what you want in a class like this. If you can avoid this teacher please do, seems like he hates his job/students.
Hard to follow in class and made me feel stupid sometimes when I asked questions and sometimes rude. If your looking for a teacher who gets straight to the point and does not look back, he's your guy.
Professor McGuire likes to waste no time, or points on tests. He is very stingy in regards to points on tests, and no partial credit. He is hard to follow during lecture, and he expects y'all to know more than you should. I would NEVER take a course with him. You will likely fail any of his classes.
Knows his stuff, but he's terrible at teaching. From my experience he assumes that everyone in his class should know everything gone over in the class and if you don't his lectures won't be any help. The quizzes and homework were way too much work and way too often.
PLEASE pay attention to these negative reviews. I wish I had. He should not be teaching lower-level math classes. He seemed to have a real disdain for us. During lectures, he often skipped steps and did them in his head making him VERY hard to follow. Only grades tests, no partial credit. Seems like he just can't wait til retirement.
Do not take his class if you want clear explanations of math questions. Really rude professor no extra credit will not help you outside of class. Overall, makes you feel like you're dumb for not knowing pre-calc swears that "you just got to know this stuff", JJC needs to hire teacher who actually love their job because he HATES his.
do not take this class! Gets irritated if you do not catch on to the material the first time. FLIES through chapters like nothing and will not slow down. If you have a question he will not go through the answer with you thoroughly. He will expect you to understand it on your own. Gives LOTS of homework. Mostly about 50-70 problems for hw A NIGHT
This professor is hard to take!! doesn't care if you pass or not! Your grade relies on the tests only!!!!!
Took the class my first semester at JJC, and never looked at RateMyProfessor, definitely should have. Worst class I have ever taken, do not take him for this class, or any class for that matter.
The reason I had to drop was because I couldn't pass his tests. His testing policy is no partial credit with one dropped quiz and exam. His teaching methods are top notch. He knows the material and explains it well. As a teacher he is great, but his tests are insane. You must be nearly perfect to pass our class started with 32 ended with 7 geniuses
I didn't read the ratings on here before I took this class and I REALLY wish I had. Prof. McGuire gives boring lectures that don't help to explain any of the material. He just assigns homework and expects you to do it on your own. When students asked questions he made us feel stupid for not knowing the answer. Extremely unreasonable and difficult.
DO NOT TAKE. Worst teacher here at JJC that I have attempted to take. I dropped out of the class and got my money back. He expects you to do 100+ examples every night. Your grade is also based ONLY on tests and quizes.
I'm good at math, but he made me feel like an idiot the entire semester. I literally chose to have a 7am math class to avoid having him again for calculus. He made the class feel bad about themselves after tests due to lower averages multiple times. Missing class is pretty rough because it's a fast paced class so you miss a lot in one class.
He only grades the tests for the semester. He drops your worst one and curves your grade towards the end of the semester. He does however belittle you and make you feel pretty bad about yourself..
Never again will I take a class with this professor. He goes too fast and gets annoyed by questions. Also, a bit sexist. This girl in my class answered his questions all the time with the correct answer and he literally stared at her until a guy said the same answer. His tests suck and are a poor representation of the stuff taught.
he gets such a bad rep but i honestly had no problem with him. drops lowest test, homework not graded, no quizzes. he would go through questions on the board and do homework problems.
Personally I didnt have a problem with this class. It was pretty challenging but if you do the homework, study, show up to every class, and get help if you need it you should be alright.
never do this to yourself
Call him "Math Jesus" and you wouldn't be far from the truth. Prof. McGuire is very passionate about math and knows the material very well but his teaching style is more "watch me do the problem" rather than explaining how it is done and why we are doing it. Some calculus, but it is mostly algebra. No partial credit, tests are very hard!!!
DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASSES. only grades in the book are tests. if you aren't a good test taker this is not the teacher for you.... get ready for 80+ problems a night. horrible teacher. he is a watch me do the problem type of teacher rather than an explain the problem teacher. homework isn't for a grade.
He's good at math (obviously) but isn't the best teacher. He'll go over anything that you had a trouble with on the homework so thats a definite plus. Sometimes, he'll go the entire class going over the homework. The key to the class is practice. Make sure you understand what youre doing. The book is on Slader if youre having trouble, utilize that.
Exams are the only criteria for passing and if you have the wrong answer, zero credit for the problem. He does not care if you know how to do it, slightest mistake, zero credit. It's as if you had to write a paper and you demonstrated complete mastery of the topic, but missed a comma, you get zero credit. Doesn't keep anything online either.
Professor McGuire's class was challenging, I was able to pass with a C. I was very close to having a B if I would've put in more effort. He's a very tough grader but he pushed me to try harder. If you are willing to work hard and apply yourself he is a great professor for you. He made me gain the confidence I needed to succeed and I'm thankful.
Very rude to class when answer is unknown, very unprofessional
I'm going to start off by saying that this guy knows his math. There was never a question that he couldn't figure out. Biggest downside is that i felt like most teaching was done when Q's were asked about the HW. Math 142 was an emotionally and mentally exhausting class, perhaps hes better outside of it, but for this class, prepare for a challenge.
I've given every other teacher I've had a great rating - but this guy was awful. Didn't explain ANY of the material- just gave you tons of homework for you to figure out on your own, then we spent the whole time in class going over it. I was getting a high D, dropped the class, then took it again with professor Alexander and got a high A.
Never take him for this class! He is the worst teacher I have ever taken. He goes through slide shows to "teach" and does not really explain them. The only time he teaches is when you ask questions on the homework. If you dont undertstand something he is rude and talks to you like you are stupid. 2/3 of the class dropped before midterms.
He was not the best professor but he also was not the worst. Students will always say that he is a really bad professor but in reality, you just have to work for the grade you want. Whatever effort you put into the class is whatever grade you will get in the class. I will warn you though you do have to teach yourself a lot of things. Go to TLC too.
Pros: -Goes over homework from previous class and you can ask any questions. -1 dropped test (worst grade). Cons: -Not the nicest guy, can sometimes make you feel bad for asking certain questions -Only graded on tests (6-8 total) -all ppt lecture -LOTS of homework You can finish with an A, you just have to work very very hard for it.
If you take this teacher for any math class youre crazy. If you never make mistakes then go ahead and take him cause he doesnt do partial points, its all or nothing. I dont have a single good thing to say about this teacher. He is judgmental and makes you feel stupid. please do yourself a favor and dont take any classes where he is the teacher.
His class is hard I will admit that. But I feel like if I would have known before that I needed to read the book and do the practice problems then I would have done that. MML will also be your best friend because there are a lot of videos on there that pretty much teach you the content that the prof will not teach you.
Ive always loved math but this professor made me hate math more than anything! He doesnt give you any notes, he is more of a watch me do it and you better get it right next time teacher. If you are confused by something and ask him he explains it really fast and no clarification. He doesnt explain how he gets his answers. He is also rude!
Terrible professor!!! So many people dropped or were failing. Don't take him no matter what
The fact that more than a third of my classmates dropped out before the final should say all you need to know. Truthfully, for me, it wasn't that difficult, so I can't honestly give a 5 in difficulty, but I can't deny how I felt like one of the lucky ones. He often makes jokes about other students, too. And threatens to lock late students out.
I highly recommend you to NOT take his class due to his poor "teaching" which he does not do at all. All he does is go over general points of the chapter/section and the rest is up to you. Yes of course you have to teach yourself and learn but if you need help from him, you'll be looked down and wont get much help. Sad that JJC still has him.
You're wasting your money and time with this terrible teacher. Don't even bother taking any of his class. If you fall behind on one day of class, you'll most likely fail that course.
Had this guy fall of 2019. He does not grade partial credit, and the only thing he does grade is tests and quizzes. The only reason I say lots of homework is because you NEED to do the practice problems he recommends to stay on top of things. He was so tough that we only had 8 of the original 20+ people at finals. He made Calc 2 a breeze.
Professor McGuire comes off really mean over email and is really tough test grader. Even if you get a question correct you’ll lose ALL credit for it if you don’t show enough work, and there is no partial credit on ones you get wrong. He is also not tech savvy, which as you can imagine, caused several problems for our ONLINE course.
Honestly I don't get why this guy is so mean. When I emailed him about my work he responded back in such a passive aggressive way and does so in every email towards me. He does not know how to communicate nicely. I definitely advise anyone to just take a different math teacher if you don't want to constantly feel like you are not enough.
I took this class and began to struggle. I asked him for a meeting and was ignored, add to that he has no posted office hours. Not the best at communicating. Unfortunately had to drop out due to not getting the help I needed and feeling disrespected. Everyone I have talked to has the same review some even worse.
Every single class for hybrid he complains how we hardly have any time to do anything in person. He spends half the class going over wrong test answers and half over new homework problems rather than ones we just did. We are bombarded with homework multiple days a week which have anywhere from 20-50 problems.
Overall, he is not a good teacher. He refuses to accept any responsibility for his teaching abilities and ridicules everyone for not understanding the topics. His emails are extremely passive-aggressive. He doesn't understand communication without making anyone feel belittled. He doesn't explain topics, rather he reads the book.
Extraordinarily disrespectful teacher. When i asked for an extension due to work emergencies as well as my anniversary causing me to miss a test he called me a liar and told me to get my priorities straight. He is also very dismissive of any issues you may have. Do not take his class.
This professor is horrible, I am literally writing this in his class right now. He erases his examples before you even get a chance to write them down. 5 people have said they have a question out loud and he has just ignored them, nobody knows what's going on. Also he doesn't do partial credit on tests, you either get it wrong or right.
Professor McGuire spends his class time skipping over ppt slides, incorrectly doing practice problems, and acting condescending towards those who have the gall to perform poorly in his class, despite his poor lecturing skills. If you must take his class, just ignore him and self-study with Khan Academy and practice problems from the book.
Currently taking this professor's class and I absolutely won't take his classes again. Homework is assigned every single night after class, which takes an average of an hour to complete. He is not understanding and pushes students too hard. Prepare to take notes, as every lecture is filled from start to end with note taking. No creativity at all.
Currently enrolled in this class and he is not a good teacher. He goes through problems way too fast, skips over power points, and overall doesn't even teach students how to work through problems. If you cant find another professor that teaches this class, wait until next semester. Trust me. You will not enjoy this class.
Half my class has dropped out and I can't blame them! Do not take a course with this professor he is so rude and not helpful in the slightest. He will call out students who perform poorly on tests and who are missing assignments. When he does try to explain problems on the board, his work is so messy and hard to read. Do not recommend.
Do not take this guy. He goes over the material fast and stands in front of the board when doing the problem. He does the math and forgets to explain what he is doing. Also, at the beginning of the year, he said if we need help, get a tutor. He expects everyone to know what is going on. If you had math before he says you should know the material.
Please just save yourself while you can
He is not my favorite. Started the semester with about 30 kids. Ended the semester with about 7 kids that showed up. I would not recommend him to anyone. Deffinaly is not tech savvy.
Do not take this professor goes through Power points way too fast, lots of homework, tests are insane, grades are only based on tests go TLC find someone else or take it online.
This teacher was definitely the worst I had at JJC. He yelled at a student who couldn't use the textbook and refused to help them. All or nothing on the tests. A ton of homework too and the class was spent going over homework questions and a few questions on the board.
Struggled a lot in this class, tests did not portray what was taught. No partial credit on the tests whatsoever and would not explain how you got questions wrong. If you take his class, be prepared to be in the TLC almost every day.
Look David was an okay professor I love math, so I was able to understand everything. However, he was so rude and expected so much from us. I mean his class was also boring I always wanted to leave. Do the homework because he barely even gives u notes and the "notes" are just example problems and more problems.
Tests are worth 50% of the overall grade. I took this class in high school so I had some knowledge of the material. There were no online lectures but the book offers videos that show how to do the problems. The professor wasn't really present in this course so if you want someone who teaches you don't take him. However, I like working by myself.
Took this 6 week class in person with Professor McGuire and it was the absolute worst. He goes way too fast with the lectures and doing problems as well. I had to withdrawal from the class because of not getting the help I needed. Thankfully I got my money back before the deadline. I would recommend taking it with somebody else.
Professor McGuire demands a lot, but if you engage with his teaching style, you can learn a lot. The workload is heavy, but Unstuckstudy and the textbook can help with study prep. Overall, a challenging but worthwhile class.
Terrible. Horrible. Awful. You wont learn anything from him expect the fact that he absolutely wants you to fail and doesn't see you as a human being. In his eyes you only live for math and if you don't think exactly how he does and read his mind then you will fail. Never a day he doesn't remind you to study for 3 hours a day and you chose this.
I usually would pass this kind of class with no problem. However, he gives NO partial credit on tests... even if you're one point away from the next letter grade up and simply forgot to write a negative sign when all the work was correct. NO EXTRA CREDIT. Doesn't curve tests or the final either. Be perfect or fail. He's proud of his high fail rate.
The sheer amount of self doubt, and mental stress I had to deal with this last semester was ridiculous. This professor from day 1 tells you to kick rocks and suck it if you don't understand the material. McGuire goes over slide shows which don't follow the book. McGuire does the bare minimum as a professor, gives no partial credit at all.
PLease do not take this class and save your time or money or get a different professor. Cannot teach to save his life and lacks any form of communication. Hes very rude and calls out people doing bad in the class, over half my class was gone within the first 5 weeks of course.
Reminds me every day that I am NOT capable of succeeding. Calls me out during class for attempting questions. Tells me I'm wrong multiple times without helping me understand where I am wrong. 50 percent test heavy. 15 percent is the final. Material he teaches is all from my math lab, he is reading it for the first time himself. DON'T DO IT!!!!!!!!!
Its quite alarming that McGuire proudly announces his course's high fail rates to his students. Math 138 is an entry level class for many, especially for those going into STEM. A grown man finding enjoyment in their student's failure is pitiful! Do yourself a favor and take this class with a competent teacher, NOT McGuire.
AVOID AT ALL COST. I am so disappointed with this professor. takes forever to grade assignments and assigns ridiculous amounts of homework. I only take 4 classes and he expects us to do 50-80 problems a week. I thought for sure I was gonna fail this class. But surprisingly I managed to pass with a 77% in the class. Find someone else please.
Professor McGuire is easily the worst professor I have ever had. None of the lectures, videos, or learning materials ever came from Professor McGuire. All Professor McGuire sends is a very vague "study guide" that contains digs and rude comments at the class 2 days before the test. I would have been taught better by a silverback then by McGuire.
This was my second time having him as my math professor and it was a huge mistake He just goes through pre made power points and doesnt care to explain in much depth how to actually do the problem. He also only puts 15 questions on the test and doesnt give any partial credit so getting a couple questions wrong already brings your grade down a bunch
DO. NOT. TAKE. He is easily the worst professor I have ever had, listen to the other reviews. I had to take him during the summer since he was the only choice and I regret it. He always speaks in a condescending tone, whenever he goes over example problems he covers the board and then erases the board right after. Do yourself the favor, DO NOT TAKE
I am currently taking this class as a 6 week summer course and my goodness the course outline was completely a ridiculous mess. next week is the final exam and after being in this course I would never take a course in the summer again way too fast and the professor was very rude and ignorant towards the class. Fine someone please
I had his online course where I paid $700 to basically teach myself. This is by far the absolute worst I've had. I had to TEACH MYSELF a 6 week CALCULUS CORSE and he was berating us in emails for "not reading them" when his "study guides" were just words rather than practice tests and equations.
David needs to collect his tenure and get off the campus. I have never had to learn from a more difficult professor then this guy. The only skill I took away from David was to teach myself everything on my own and to sit and waste an hour of my time. You are better off taking 138 with Professor James Morgan, who is honestly one of the GOATS at JJC.
literally so rude to students who ask questions. All work we do is outside of class and when he goes over lessons, you quite literally wont understand what he is talking about unless you watch the videos before hand. Love the content, but just makes the class less enjoyable when David seems like he doesnt want to be there.
David is too old to be teaching. He has repeated lectures from previous days without knowing. Every lecture is straight from Pearson slideshows, and we go over nothing useful for the test. Do yourself a favor and please take anyone but him. No matter how hard you try to make up for bad lectures by studying, you won't.
Each class was an absolute waste of my time. He mocks students who email/come to office hours. If you're failing:"You just need to study more." Anything he doesn't want to go over: "You should know it already." Brags about how many students fail his class. No lecture materials posted+repeated lectures.Tests are hard and often.
worst professor of all time
Very hard to succeed, berates students for not understanding, and rules the test by Pearson. The study guides were terrible, only words and no questions. Very rude, if you have the option to please do not take this professor, have a nice day!
