He mumbles a lot so sit at the front of the class. Don't worry about the Reader, just worry about the text. Exams are easy and clear.
He knows what he's doing, but sometimes has troubles getting students to understand. His tests are really easy if you know what your doing. He seems to view how his students are doing as a measure of his teaching ability. Good prof.
Very cool prof. But he mumbles, so sit at the front. Knows a LOT about ancient Greence and Rome and his tests are so easy. He makes the class interesting, definately take his class!
Talks monotone, and sometimes likes to see if you know the 3rd cousin of this or that fellow on quizzes. If you provide examples on the essays on the midterm and final, you do ok. If you have a background in myths, you might get away w/o reading the text.
Once again he is highly recommended. you might have to ask him to explain some stuff but he is very good at what he does and knows everything he is supposed to know. You will feel like showing up to class.
His quizzes are hard and quite tricky. Im an 80 student and I find this class hard. He tries to make the material interesting, but his quizzes are no fun. What a miserable class this is!
Good prof, helpful, fair. Tests can be challenging, but there aren't any surprises.
It's an easy class, unless you're a first year, it shouldn't be that difficult. For those who's doing bad and not a first year, try studying. There's no surprises on the quizzes, and if you do that badly on them, be thankful there's no mid-term. He does mark hard on the papers though.
good prof...very fair..just memorize yourr vocab and endings and you'll be fine...has a great sense of humor
Hard quizzes and study like hell for the final. The class is really fun the way he teaches but he goes through the slides to fast sometimes.
Good prof, very funny and easy going. Quizzes and test are challenging, class is not easy, but still fun. Atmosphere in class is fun. Need to memorize terms though.
sure he's nice to look at and listen to but he really needs to work on his people skills and expressing what he wants in his assignments. And next time he Chews His Nails all through my presentation I'm gonna slap him. over-all good prof.
Not so good. Class is easy and workload is slack, but do not even consider taking this class if you want to boost your GPA. Very hard, very picky marker! Seems to consider an 80 to be a wonderful mark. If you're usually a 90% student, you'll cry. He's a bit arrogant, in a weird, nervous kind of way.
I was disappointed in this class. Dr. Meban has poor lecture skills. He never looks at the class when he talks. He also needs to work on his marking. I think he's generally in the right range, but low. Good assignments--really helped to understand the subject matter and class topics.
he's really hard
Good prof, wants students to do well but has a "who cares?" attitude that I liked. he seems intimidating but really isn't at all. Latin is difficult but he gets you involved and teaches it clearly. JUST ASK IF YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND, HE WILL HELP!
David Meban is a fantastic teacher, who really has a passion for what he does. I wouldn't consider him a hard marker, you just need to know your material... like in any class. I actually look forward to attending his class, and hearing what he has to say. Also, the scenery isn't so bad either.
Well, I found him to be an arrogant ass, very unapproachable, and I agree with the poor lecture skills comment. He does a very lazy and half-assed job of marking things, and gets annoyed when you ask him to read it over and give it a second thought. It was an interesting class, but I would much rather have taken it from a different professor.
Good, goes over the notes very fast. Quizzez can be tough but themidterm was surprisingly easy. Seems like a good guy.
The learning environment was stressful. He will test your knowledge of Latin in front of the entire class. If you don't like being called on for answers, you'll hate this class. CLAS 151 will be no less stressful, I'm sure. But Latin beats the Department of International Languages.
Pretty good teacher..seems intimidating but he really isnt.. Hes willing to help, you just have to put in the time and effort. He makes the class fun..but be prepared to answer questions in front of everyone for every class

David was an incredible prof! He made class really fun and exciting, which is difficult to do with Greek tragedy. He is very approachable, always willing to meet with you if you're having trouble, and really goes out of his way to help you. He knows his stuff well, but he certainly isn't arrogant unless you're acting like a show-off. He's the best!
Good lecturer, straight to the point. Rouses great interest in class through cocky remarks and tons of aditude. If you wanna be on his good side, then memorize every small thing and if you don't want your bf to question his sexuality after being in his class, tell your bf to choose a diff. class a.s.a.p.
Well i've taken every class that Meban has ever offered and let me say that if you are a crazy hist buff like me you'll love all the myths and technical junk that he has to dish out. Sure he's cute, but gruff/blunt don't be put off by him. just know the basics and for Latin know it all. lol (4th year Hist Major/ Clas Minor) OJ.
Hard marker. Willing to help, but can be very hard to approach. Has a sense of humour, but lectures too quickly most of the time, and is sometimes rude about questions during lecture. Will expect you to know a lot of mythology and figures for this class. Mid-term was quite fair, but quizzes are hard. Overall, I don't recommend him as first choice.
He's an amazing prof, I loved his class and the things he taught. I wish he was teaching next semester!!

He is an amazing prof!!! He is incredibly helpful if you go talk to him- he knows everything there is to know about ancient greece/rome. His great sense of humour make his lectures an absolute delight!! I've had lots of good profs, but i'd say he's the best one. A++
Probably one of my favourite profs at the U of R.
This guy is great, excellant teacher, funny and a very fair marker.an easy class,if you put effort into it.
Great class. Have to go to class in order to get the notes as he doesn't post them. If you take good notes you will do well in this class.
Absolutely amazing teacher! He has a great sense of humour while actually makes his lectures fun to listen to. His teaching method is really clear and thorough as well. Definitely would take a class from him again.
infinitely patient and absolutely hilarious. extremely knowledgeable about his subject area and an excellent prof; very approachable and willing to help. i'm very sad that i can't take anymore classes from him:(
hilarious, passionate, informative, and interesting. great prof.
Hilarious teacher, hands on with great student interaction. Keeps his lessons to the point and simple. Awesome teacher overall!
Such a good prof!
would not recommend
His style of teaching is not my favorite. He just reads from the textbook.
Dr Meban is a very fair professor who mixes humour with his teaching. Highly recommend if you need to fulfill your language requirement. Just a warning, his sense of humour will either grow on you or get on your nerves.
Some of his lectures can seem long, but somehow he kept me interested all semester. He knows how to pack a lot of information into one semester effectively. You not only read and enjoy Classical literature, but you learn the historical and mythological contexts. Fun class, would definitely recommend!
His class was amazing. Definitely a class I would recommend to everyone; extremely easy to follow.
Go to class and take detailed notes. He makes it clear what information is important to know for tests. You don't need to use the text book a lot. you can repeat back the information from class on a midterm and get an good mark. It especially pays to go to class because every 2 weeks you have a 10 question quiz worth 6% each.
I LOOOOVE this prof! awesome, sooo funny, keeps material interesting, you need to attend class in order to do well. cool guy.
Great prof, funny humour, knows his field well. Explains everything very clearly. Textbook use however is not fully needed except for supplemental reading. Received 73% Overall. As long as you attend lectures, you will do well.
A great teacher who enjoys his field of work and shows it. HIs is too the point and reads from the text book. While teaching, his voice level tends to drop sometimes so it may be hard to hear at points in the lecture. Make sure that you do attend class, he tends to quiz you on pictures you've seen during lecture notes.
Best prof I've ever had by far
Very fun and engaging prof. I found this to be a class I was actually really excited to go to. Explains clearly and understands the content very well (and is actually able to teach it). I would definitely recommend this prof to anyway taking a Classics class.
Great prof! 5 Mini Quizzes, 1 Midterm, and Final. Quizzes were EXTREMELY easy, and the midterm and final were very easy if you read over your notes. He doesn't post notes, so you have to take your own notes well, but if you attend class and take notes, you'll do great! He's very easy to listen to as well.
I enjoyed this class. David was very knowledgable about the material. Classes could be a bit dry sometimes, but his jokes and awkwardness made the time go by quicker. Quizzes very easy, too. The textbook is a good one - interesting and easy to read - but $135 new so get to the bookstore quick to get a used copy! Would take another class from him.
Wonderful teacher. I have literally ran across campus to class in order to get a front row seat! I Loved his dry humor and I looked forward to his classes- I always left the building with a grin! Also not so sure about the 'hard maker' comments. I skimmed my notes 5 minutes before each quiz and got 100%. Very straightforward and honest guy.
By far one my favorite professors. Classes were well organized and structured. He's very knowledgeable and passionate about classics Lots of material to cover in 3 short months, 1 midterm and almost weekly quizzes. As long as you come to class, which is a must (everything tested on is from his slides) you'll get high marks. Highly recommend him!
The best prof I've ever had. Made the material interesting and easy to follow/pay attention to. He has a great sense of humor. You have to attend the class though, as you will not get everything out of the readings. Studying is a must for this class, there is a lot of material to know. Definitely would take another class from David! 10/10
He's a good prof and super funny. He usually lets you go about 5-10 minutes early. Course is short quizzes, midterm and final. If you study and pay attention to the class you will pass. He didn't put his slides online so you need to go to class to get the information. Nice guy and marks ridiculously quickly.
I've taken all the classes that he offers as a professor. In his Latin classes he is willing to help out after if you don't get it, and even during class he'll stop to help out. He's the kind of Prof that makes fun of you for 20 minutes and then answers your questions. If you can't handle dry humour, don't take the class. I thought he was awesome!
Fantastic teacher, obviously knows Latin like the back of his hand. He also has a great (very dry) sense of humor. If you take the time to go over your vocab and conjugations, you can't fail.
Took my first Greek class with him, not knowing what to expect. He is really funny and encouraging, but at times, he is pretty vague, and sort of skims through the text as he lectures. I wish he would go more into depth. He does call on people to give answers, so be prepared. Study a lot, lots of quizzes/assignments. Do homework before class!
awesome
I took Classics 100 with David Meban as it was one of my choices for an arts required course. Overall the class was interesting and the lectures were presented well, although I found the quizzes to be quite challenging. There is a tonne of material to be covered and he asks very specific questions on exams. The final was extremely challenging.
Great prof, made the material interesting. Attendance is not mandatory, but he doesn't post his lecture notes online, so you basically have to go to class.
A lot of the lectures are boring but if you pay attention you'll do just fine, everything from the lectures is on the tests.
Enjoyed this class, and Dr. Meban's teaching style. The textbook wasn't all that important, I used the version that he had put on hold in the library a few times but otherwise was unneeded. Helpful with any and all questions.
David is not a good professor. I had him for Latin (CLAS150) and Scientific terminology (CLAS120). He looked physically pained to be at class and calls on people at random. His demeanor in class can only be likened to that of a stumbling drunkard as he grips the podium for dear life and loses his train of thought never to recover it.
If you need an easy credit, take David's medical terminology class!!! I didn't expect to do so well but if you study, the final is so easy and it was actually pretty fun to learn about medical terms. This is a helpful class for science/nursing students, and I would highly recommend because it boosted my average as well.
Really good professor, and a really good guy. Does a good job helping people understand without making them feel stupid, also a very fair marker.
Dr. Meban is one of the few good profs. in the UofR. He gives fair quizzes, assignments, & exams. He marks fairly. His strategies in teaching are very effective. He prepares exercises to enhance learning. He also cares for his students and understands their needs and limitations. To get an A+, students must regularly study.
David is the cream of the crop of UR professors. He has a natural talent at bringing the class together with his wry wit and casual chill, providing effective instruction while remaining decidedly patient with all of his students. I never thought I would learn as much as I did from a language class. A real gem.
He is an amazing prof. There are quizzes every two weeks and the majority of the questions are from the lectures and some are from the textbook (just to make sure you are reading the textbook). His lectures are entertaining as well as contains a fair amount of information.
He is an amazing professor. Attendance isn't mandatory but he doesn't post anything on ur courses, so you have to go to class and take notes. Lectures were amazing and contain lots of interesting topics. Quizzes every two weeks and a midterm and final. He asks very specific things and he is not a tough grader. I recommend him as a professor.
The prof is fine but the class is insanely easy if you are at all good at basic memorization. Easy elective that I recommend to everyone for a grade boost. The final was a bit difficult but the overall class was easy and worth taking.
Mr. Meban was a pleasure to take a class from even though it was an elective for me. It was such a smooth experience online. The information and was clear and concise. If you do exactly as he says by, reading the materials and understand the articles that are provided, you should no problem. Thanks again and will definitely take another class.
Professor Meban is great! Really accommodating and funny (for a classics prof). He claims you will rely heavily on the textbook, but I found it was more of a helpful resource since he provides you with most of what you need to memorize in his lectures and notes. Super manageable work load if you can memorize easily.
he is a very understanding person and marks pretty easily. he tends to skim over stuff without going into full detail and the quizzes are rlly hard because the questions are very specific. it takes a lot of memorization but overall its a good class
Fairly good and well-structured class
David is a good dude who strives to be fair. David is always accessible, and willing to help you out with assignments in order to help you get a better grade. There is no surprises in his class, the recipe for success is simple: Watch the lecture, do the textbook reading, then watch the lecture one more time to prepare for the quiz.
LOVED this class, it was so interesting and Dr. Meban made the material easy to follow. He had multiple assignments and quizzes which I enjoyed to spread out your mark a bit so your grade didn't rely so heavily on one or two things. He was super funny and very knowledgeable about the course material, I 100% recommend it!
David has a passion for his profession and gives extensive feedback on assignments;however, his feedback can come off harsh but I do understand where he's coming from with it.The class is asynchronized;set aside an hour or so a few days a week if you want to know your stuff. His lectures are short and he expects you to read every chapter he assigns
I took Davids class in the fall semester and I loved this class! He's very passionate about this topic and engaging with students. There were days I was sad the lecture was over which NEVER happens to me! I will say these quizzes only have 10 questions and are worth a decent amount so do your reading and note taking! I would highly recommend!
Great lectures, really nice guy, gives 15min video feedback on each assignment. That is very helpful for future assignments.
I thoroughly enjoyed taking Greek myth from Prof Meban this semester. He is very good at drawing people in with how he tells each myth by adding a bit of humour and his personality to them. His meme assignment is a great way to end the semester & his quizzes are fairly easy if you pay attention. He can be smug at times but overall is a good prof.
I've had him in 3 different classics classes and each one I always enjoy bc of him. He is passionate and sometimes goes offtrack but hands down the best prof I've ever had. He does a couple small quizzes throughout the semester. He's also got 2 very easy assignments (one is a meme one) Would 100% take him again
He is a great prof especially for a language class. if you are not sure i genuinely advice to take him
Super friendly and obviously cares about what he teaches. Tells lots of jokes and teaches a pretty relaxed class. I was nervous since I'd never taken a class for a second language but he made it super easy to understand.
He was very engaging with material and the quizzes were very easy and straightforward. He marked the two simple assignments kind of harsh but the final was super easy so it makes up for it
