He is estremely intelligent. He does a very good job at teaching and is clear on what he wants his students to know. His tests are difficult, however, if you know the information you should be able to apply it to his 5 essay questions that are worth 20 points each.
Expectations weren't met in this class. Dr. Merkler has no enthusiasm when teaching and makes no effort to make the class interesting.
Whoever called Merkler "smrt" apparently was not. Merkler is arrogant, pompous, long-winded, generally pretty full of himself, and is condescending and unhelpful to his students. He makes nominal remarks about being available to meet with his students for extra help-- and when you email him, he NEVER writes back. He is apathetic and annoying.
I fully agree with the 12/06 post. Although he claims to enjoy teaching, he repeatedly stated that he doesn't care if the whole class earns an F. It appeared that he's really only interested in his research work. He is the most arrocant and condescending prof I've ever had.
I enjoyed Merkler's class..he was pretty clear on what he wanted us to learn for the tests. I took Weinzerl before and it was pointless to go to his class; you at least learn and get something out of Merkler's lectures. His exams were difficult, but just study his notes, the book, and do ALL assigned hw problems
Take someone else!

He seem's friendly at first, but he's condescending to his students.
He covered for my professors class one time, terrible lecture. Spent so much time talking about his own personal issues he barely covered an acutal lecture. And he does not give any detail to his lectures. You could learn just as much by reading the one paragraph summaries at the end of each section in the book. Take Grossmann
He definitely does not care if you succeed or not. He is not available at all times. The homework is pointless because on the test you have to know how to apply things which is hard and that's why in my class 160 students failed out of about 200. definitely take Grossman, I hears he explains well.
He is a good teacher and you WILL get something out of his class. His exams, however, has nothing to do on what he teaches. My only advice is to do well in the laboratory portion of the class, since his two exams are only 20% of the final grade. With some luck, you can escape with an A.
This online class is easy if you've taken Organic Chemistry. Just do the assignments and turn it in on time. It's that simple. If you have any problems, just go visit him in his office and I'm sure he will help you. You should not get lower than a B in the class if you DO THE WORK.
He is the worst professor I have ever had. His lectures are decent, but his tests are horrible and are made to confuse students. He doesn't care if everyone in the class fails; I actually think he enjoys it. No curve will be given. This man should stick to research and let someone who cares about students do the teaching!
BCH 3023L BASIC BIOCHEM LAB. He is the lecture part of the lab and he makes the Midterm and Final. By far the worst teacher i have seen very unclear, cover material that isnt done in the lab and skip those that are. He DOESNT care for the students at all, very rude at time. Just do well in the LAB and hope you got enough pts to get A- overall.
Hard teacher who does not care about his students. He is rude, does not respond to emails, and doesn't like to see students outside of class-even if you worked hard and made an A. He made up this story about how the bookstore should have automatically ordered the book so no one had the book for the first two weeks, but Merkler just forgot to order.
RUN! Extremely confusing, couldn't care less about students, very rude. Uses overheads and expects you to copy from them b/c they're not on Bb. His tests are nothing like his lecture. You'll have to teach yourself since you can't even find him during office hrs. He will pick on certain students for the whole semester, and make them look stupid.
So, the biggest turn offs are he can be confusing, he doesn't post his notes, and everything he says regardless of topic or person being addressed sounds condescending. That being said, attend every class, read the book to fill in the gaps and gain clarity and look over the old exams he posts. If you go office hours try to disregard his tone.
This class is a lot of work but Dr. Merkler is very helpful outside of class. I went in with practice problems and he explained them very well. He rambles sometimes but its interesting and relevant, especially to medicine.
I absolutely loved his humor, because with out it this course would be so dry. He's the only prof with undergrad, grad and phd in biochem so he knows what hes talking about. Read the book word for word! His exams are straight from it. Exams are Really tough, but he gives practice ones.
Merkler is just fine as a prof. Def not as big and mean as people made him out to be. He has quite a sardonic sense of humor which comes across wrong to people who don't get it. I personally found him funny. My complaint: he spent too much time on basic stuff we were solid on. He should of spent more time lecturing Biochem.
Awful. Enjoys keeping good students from attaining A's. If you know everything about biochem (concepts and details) you can do well. This is impossible if you are taking any other courses, have a job or sleep. He makes this course much harder than it already is.
He really wants to make sure his students learn the material well, so his tests are created to make you think, so if you don't do all the problems in the back of each chapter, read the book, go to lecture, and ask questions, you will be lost. You will have to work extremely hard to get an A or B, even people with a C feel they earned it.
Dr. Merkler is excellent. He is the most knowledgable person at USF in the field of biochemistry. He is very helpful at office hours, he spent several hours explaining how to solve biochemistry problems from a previous exam that I had done poorly on. This help enabled me to pull my grade up by the final exam.
Sooo funny. I love Merkler.
FUNNY AS HELL RAMBLES ENDLESSLY ABOUT STUFF VERY INTRIGUING guy
hilarious guy. very good at teaching you real world concepts and how biochemistry is related! he is by far the best professor at usf. oh yea his exams arent that bad. awesome awesome guy.
He is not really as mean as he sounds. Super helpful in office hours. Helps to make biochem less boring by breaking the material up with jokes and practical examples. Tests are hard but do-able. He tells you what will be on the test in lecture, so make sure you go. The class isnt easy no matter who you take it with so dont expect it to be.
IF you have the choice. Take someone else. David seems like a decent guy but going to his class is a waste of time. He doesn't cover lecture material, and if he doesn't get to it, you are still responsible for it. The book is the most important thing to learning and doing well in this course. Tests aren't that hard if you know the book.
MERKLER IS AWESOME! biochemistry is a beast of class and you have to put the work in...he tells you in lecture what you need to know, so class is mandatory!Pluse he isnfunny and makes class worth going to with is funny stories!!!
Awesome human. He cares about his students, the world around him, and the future. Biochemistry is HARD. You will learn an enormous amount of stuff that you'll forget, but you will learn. He's a great professor and I'm glad I had the experience of attending his class. It's Merkler....Not Merckler..
Great person! really cares about his students, wish every professor i had at usf was as awesome a person as merkler! biochem is a hard subject, merkler makes it enjoyable to be in class every time, funny smart, sexy. every professor should be like merkler!!!
great guy! hard class but he is worth taking it with!
I love merkler! Hard as heck class!!
Brutal classs but worth taking if its with him.
Class is hard there are alot of little details exam are tough but do-able
Ifyou can avoid biochem than do he is hard study like mad
Explains material very well learned a great deal goes above and beyond teaching material I did very well on the ACS biochem exam thanks to him but his exams are tough questions definitely make you think out of the box
I enjoy going to class, he's funny and teaches with real life examples so you actually get what you are learning and why it's important. You have to read the book there is no way around that and his tests make you think but I have an A right now and I'm taking 2 more bio classes and labs. He really tries to help you if you have questions. Take him!
Look, this guy is awesome. There's no other way to put it. I've never even been close to falling asleep in his class even though it is was at 8:35am. He's interesting and he tells you what's important to know for the exam and, most importantly, what you don't need to know. Kawabanga!
Material is easy to understand but each test contains A LOT of material. Do not fall behind in this class. Test questions make you think and some are unnecessarily hard. Study the book like mad.
I <3 Merkler!!!!! One if the best professors USF has!
Hard professor hard class but worth taking
AWESOME AWESOME AWESOME GUY a lot of material and a lot of detail but he is super helpful and funny..he really makes you think and work for your grade...do well on the first 3 exams bc the ACS is nothing like his exams..BEST PROFESSOR I'VE EVER HAD AT USF
Never showed up to a single lecture, just the first day for role. Study all slides well and an A or B is possible. Questions on exams quite basic and test general principles rather than intricate or specific material. Even with my carelessness and relative lack of effort I got a B, so an A should be surprisingly easy to get. Online hw + few tests.
His summer biochemistry class was extremely difficult. I received my first college C ever, and I got A`s in gen chem and B`s in organic chem with the same amount of studying of put into this class. He is friendly and approachable in person, but gives very little useful information in lectures such as how to solve basic biochem problems.
Dislikes having to answer questions outside of class because it cuts into his”real job” and hr makes fun of students who go for help w/TA's & other students in his office exams are hard but he doesn't care
weird guy, hard exams, dont bother taking any other class when you take him because its brutal
BEST PROFESSOR USF HAS TO OFFER!! YEA HE CAN BE MEAN BUT HE CAN ALSO BE NICE AND SUPER HELPFUL!! I LOVE THIS GUY
I am about to finish this course in a couple weeks. I have never been so stressed out for an exam in my life. He only gives 3 exams, 1 drop grade. NO CURVE. So if you bomb on the first exam, you're screwed because the last two are comprehensive, (and w/i 3 days of each other). He expects you to know EVERYTHING, and no HW. Just the 2 exam grades.
Class is soo hard!!!!!!! Dr. Merkler is an amazing guy, very nice and office hours are welcome. But his tests are hard! 3 exams, one Drop. last two accumulative. 30 questions each. Final is 45. So study STUDY and STUDY. do not procrastinate!!
He always seems disgruntled, makes his class more difficult than need be..the students that do well in his class study using the test bank that comes with the book which not everyone has exams are hard..went to office hours and he would not answer question he doesnt answer emails either though he said he reads them all just doesnt respond
This guy doesn't teach you anything that's going to be on the exam! I have him both for Lab and Lecture and he asks the most ridiculous questions... I honestly don't know what his problem is! I'm not one to usually complain, as I am a good student, but this guy... I don't even know. Don't take the class with him if you can help it...
student with high grade: TERRIBLE SEMESTER. assigned hw questions help and his old exams. thats it. most problems on(3tests)meant to trick you intentionally, not answers, but the actual wording of question. im taking BCH to learn not learn trick puzzles. oh-penalizes you for taking lab, makes both exams(2 each total)on same day. makes no sense..
when considering to take him- NOTE! : most of ratings are before his: egomaniac, mid life crisis, "im tenure", i dont have to follow any rules , or have 1% care for any student whatsoever. says hes fair with zero curve, most failing or getting Cs(failing for premed). "fair"= two exams-final grade and lab/lect exams on same day, lowering both grades
AVOID HIM! 3 tests, only 2 count. test 1: chapters 1-8, test 2 ch 1-12, test 3 ch 1-14. The exams are extremely difficult. No longer allows cheat sheet, no longer gives extra credit. Need to know A LOT of info. Class average was very low, doesn't curve, one semester there were no A's but doesn't care because of his "tenure' .
ABANDON ALL HOPE YE WHO ENTER HERE!! This class is the hardest class I have taken in all my years at USF. This class makes organic I & II look like a kindergarten class. There is no point in going to his lectures unless you want his life stories that have little to no relation to what is on the exam. READ THE BOOK! this is the only way to pass.
I dont know what you people are talking about i took him fall'11 & spg'12 and he was great. yea he was tough but he was helpful, friendly, allowed "helpsheet" and even would tell us what we shouldnt put on it and what would be helpful. he was friendly and really cared. his stories were awesome to hear and everyone did well.
There is no "cheat sheet" anymore. He said it caused more problems and barely improved grades. It's not that his class is hard. There is no similarity between the exam material and lecture material. That's not the same as hard. It almost seems malicious and intentional. Only reason i'm getting B+ is cuz i know someone who has tons of old exams!
Worst prof Ive had, lecture material doesn't really help much for the exams. Find a friend with all the old exams and test bank
DR. MERKLER IS AN AMAZING PROFESSOR, TOP NOTCH AT USF. HE DOESNT HAND YOU AN ANSWER HE MAKES YOU READ THE BOOK AND LEARN YOU HAVE TO WORK HARD HE WONT BABYSIT YOU ITS AN UPPER LEVEL COURSE NO BABYSITTING YOU HAVE TO WORK HARD, MERKLER WILL HELP YOU ALONG THE WAY HE IS A GREAT GUY VERY KNOWLEDGABLE HE IS HAPPY TO HELP
Merkler is not difficult,he just makes you apply concepts when he gives exams. You cant just memorize or study definitions you have to know how to apply them. He tells you what you should focus on and what isnt. There is a ton of information to learn so dont procrastinate. Study, do the hw go to office hrs and ask Q's you will get an A or B
Most difficult course I have taken. Material is not that hard, but its the way he asks it. Questions on exams are convoluted to ask a simple concept. No cheat sheets! No extra credit! No curve! He tells interesting stories during lecture but have no relevance toward exams... Get lots of old exams. Many questions are recycled.
Very hard class go to Merkler's office for extra help he is SUPER helpful MUCH more helpful then Justin or Dan the ta's are less then useless whine about having to help and don't care. Old exams are helpful bc they show which concepts merkler likes to test. Merkler gives helpful hints for exam when you go for help. Great great guy. Def recommend.
Difficultly level: Lecture 2/10; Book 4/10; Exams 9/10. The hardest part about this class was how shockingly different the exam was from the other material. He prepares you for one thing and then hits you upside the head with something else. Avoid if you can.
He is a very tough professor. Be prepared to study. His curve at the end of the semester saved me. He is the best lecturer compared to the rest of the biochem professors.
How to pass.... GO TO OFFICE HOURS! He is so nice and helps so much! Read as much of the book as u can, it helps. Dont memorize the material, understand it.
Merkler makes this class harder than it needs to be. It's his first time teaching this. Even at office hrs he talks about how he would rather not be teaching this course and how he deserves more respect within the dept. Lecture is mildly entertaining but most of it is about stuff you will never see on the exam so hard to know what to study.
Difficult class. Merkler's lectures don't prepare you for his test questions, so in my opinion, don't bother going. Study the powerpoints, study the book, do the homework problems, and hopefully you will make it out with a C. Don't bother going to office hours either because he does not help! If you have the chance to take another professor, do it!
Merkler is the most incompetent instructor at USF. He fails to teach the material to be covered and rambles about other subjects (60% of the time). He is unable to answer questions and doesn’t seem to care. He knows a few students personally and is bothered by other students participating in discussion. Study on your own and read the book.
Do not take Merkler. You will end up teaching yourself from the book. His lectures and exams are two completely different things, making it very hard to prepare. I don't know why people said that office hours help--- all he did was further confuse me! Stay away from this guy, I wish I had.
OMG he is a tough professor, but for good reason. He wants students to understand the material not just memorize it. He mainly teaches the material and gives a few conceptual questions on his exams plus a small detail questions from his slides. He is incredibly helpful though and so smart. He really wants you to do well. Visit office hours!
Exam questions can be tricky, sometimes asking questions about simple concepts in a manner that ends up making the problem difficult. However, the class is absolutely passable. Grading scale is curved, one exam dropped. ACS final, but allowed a cheat sheet. All in all, Harmon is supposed to be easier, but if you can only get Merkler, still take it.
Dr. Merkler openly states that he did not choose to teach this course, and had he not needed money for his research, he would not be. He is very unclear, tries very hard to produce as many failing grades as possible on exams, and regularly does not teach tested material until after the exam is over. Unenthusiastic and unnecessarily difficult. Avoid
Dr. Merkler isn't involved in the actual lab, but he teaches the lecturediscussion that goes with the lab. The lecture has NOTHING to do with what goes on in the lab and Dr. Merkler lectures about random biochem topics. Exams are very difficult and have nothing to do with the lab. Lectures are boring as he makes up random stories about students.
His exams are hard, but he gives you previous exams to study from. If you do not know the info. You will not pass. Got As in the labs, and some hard quizzes but they prepare u for the exams. There are two exams if you don't get 60 points you will not pass even if you got As in the labs. Exams: each 75 points + extra credit questions
Dr. Merkler has a reputation about being the "tough professor," but honestly if you go to class and read through the book, you will be fine. He posts old exams that are the exact same lay out as his current test so DO THEM ( he uses a few of the same questions) He is very enthusiastic, he cares, and simplifies the topics so they are understandable.
Though he would prefer not to teach, he's actually a good professor. I was told he was "the devil", not true. He's a professor and a really good one at that. Attempt to actually understand what it is you have difficulty with before going to his office hours. He will spend hours helping students in office hours, GO! its worth it!! BTW Go to class!
By far Dr. Merkler is the best professor I have ever had at USF! He is tough and is not an easy A class, be expected to put work into this class. Dr. Merkler will spend a numerous amount of time with his students in office hours, me personally at least 2-3 hours a week and sometimes way more. His class helped me improve my MCAT score as well!
Dr. Merkler is a great teacher but his tests are the hardest you will take. They are concept based critical thinking, so dont think you can memorize everything and be fine. They're all multiple choice so thats the plus side. Also, if you score a higher grade on your final then your current grade, your final becomes your semester grade.
Merkler was challenging but also not the worst of USF. I did't learn much, but his "hard knock" teaching style will scare you into studying, even if it's pointless on exam day. He's not a fair gradertester, but he puts exact QUESTIONS he says he will in class, so you can get a AB, even if that is all you get from this class. TAs will answer Q's!!
I recommend you take this professor while abroad if you want to get a good grade in the class. Biochemistry is a tough class and i dont know hows his tests are over a regular semester. He gives a good amount of extra credit and is extremely knowledgeable in his field. Tests are difficult! You have conceptualize a lot!
I do not know how anyone could say anything bad about Dr. Merkler. He is an amazing professor. Yes, you are taking biochemistry and the class will be tough. You will have to study but he will be there for you if and when you need him. GO TO OFFICE HOURS. Get to know him and he is awesome. He is 100% the best professor I have ever had.
Merkler's tests are extremely difficult to most! He wants you to expand your learning to over all benefit with your future career. By taking this class, you will in turn be more knowledgeable than any other biochem student at most universities because he makes you study well beyond the topics even provided in any general biochemistry textbooks.
Merkler is a genius and the SMARTEST man you will ever meet, just ask him. Listen for his high school story he likes to tell about being the only teenager in the class to get this one question right. He makes himself feel superior by talking down to his students and crushing them with tests far above their level. Take if you hate good grades!!!
Dr. Merkler is a very smart man and very interesting to listen to. He would be a good NON-CREDIT lecturer. However, taking him for BCH 3053 and BCH Lab, I have found that he is one of the worst professors I have had at USF. His lectures for BOTH classes fail to make any sense to what's going on in the tests and his tests are extremely hard.
Pro: 1. He's funny and talks about interesting subjects Con: 2. He tests you on things he briefly mention. You won't find it in the book or the ppt slides. 3. Tests cover a lot of material, often in depth. Details are expected to be memorized.
I am doing this because I feel like owe it to warn anyone planning on taking merkler, He is a nice person and very entertaining to talk to. His tests are probably the hardest I have ever taken. no matter how long you study, the test is always hard . he forgets to talk about the exam materials but tells unrelated stories, leaving you unprepared
Dr. Merkler is a very nice person and entertaining lecturer but he is very difficult as far as his exams go. I would have avoided him if I had known any better. I worked VERY VERY HARD for a B+. Take Harmon if you can.
Merkler makes the course interesting, but he can go off topic. His exams are one of the hardest I've taken. They often involve critical thinking and it is expected that you know most of PP slides plus what he discusses in lecture. I had to study A LOT for this course. 4 exams (1 drop) plus final. Quizzes are a buffer. Recitations kinda helpful.
Taking Dr. Merkler's class, you'll definitely learn biochem, but you'll struggle to do well. His tests are tough, as he expects his students to know more than terms/definitions and actually apply their knowledge. While this isn't a bad thing, it can still be very annoying. Even so, he's a great lecturer, even if he does go off on a lot of tangents.
I had Biochemistry with Dr. Merkler & this course is one of my favorites, but I was literally struggling for a C! I found him to be nice in person but his tests are extremely difficult, mainly because you have to apply your all of knowledge to understand and answer most of questions. Study HARD from the very beginning & go to his office hrs.!
Pros: He's very nice, & has a 'decent' curve. Cons: His exams were extremely hard because of all the minor details he asked. His PP slides sucked (paragraphs) & he rambles and veers away to talk about his research (SHOWS UP ON AN EXAMS). Struggled throughout the class, wish I would have taken anyone else. The class is doable, just use the book.
I did not go to class. However I had friends who did who did not pass. I passed, barely. Basically his tests are nothing like whats in the book or his lectures. The help sessions, I have heard, are where most of his exam questions come from. TAKE GELIS! He says the tests are exactly the same but they are no where near similar.
I took his class in Florence, Italy. He's a nice, funny guy, but his lectures aren't the best. He talks about important concepts, but doesn't work out problems that would appear on an exam because he "doesn't know what would help us"... Gives extra credit, has a good curve, and provides old exams. I'd absolutely recommend biochem in Florence.
Biochemistry is a tough subject but a crucial one for the MCAT. Dr. Merkler prepared me well for it. He is definitely a difficult professor b/c he is BIG on critical thinking. However, if you are planning on pursuing medical school I highly recommend taking him. He preps you hard for the MCAT and explemifies the material with medical relevance.
Professor Mercer did not seem to actually care about what he was teaching. He would speak about mother nature and race through slides, only to be extremely specific on tests. Tests did not include what was taught in class. I had to try my best and learn everything from the book and net. An A student, I got a B in his class, barely away from an A.
He was the hardest professor I have ever taken. I am usually an A or B student, but I barely passed with a C-. He tests on things that were not covered in lecture or that were briefly talked about in class. I suggest reading the book and learning concepts online or watching videos just to get by.
This professor will damage your GPA. You will learn Biochemistry but you won't be able to apply it in his tests. His tests are 50% what he gives you to study and 50% material he never teaches. Do not waste your time and money. Avoid lowering your GPA with this professor
I would recommend him and I would take his class again. I literally worked my ass off for the B I got. However, his class made biochemistry section of the MCAT a breeze. His tests are very hard and unless you know the material back and front you won't get it right, which is how every class should be! Office hours help a lot because he gives hints.
I took him in Italy and he was an amazing professor! It is obvious that he is very knowledgeable in his field (which leads to a bit of sidetracking during lecture) However he cares about his students and gives plenty of extra credit especially on tests. Great professor, i would take him again.
10/10 recommend taking biochem in italy. Definitely was challenged but it was so rewarding. Prof. Merkler is extremely personable, caring, and fair. Biochem, however, was (in my opinion) harder than orgo 2 considering this was a 6 week class. Just be prepared to work hard. This was an experience ill always remember.
I understand that this could be a requirement but for students like me with barely enough time to sleep, its nice to get a class like this that's straight forward with no tricks or manipulative questions.
Biochem is HARD, no matter who you take it with. Merkler is actually a decent prof, but you will need to work hard to do well. If you're taking BCH 4034, it's a lot harder than BCH 4033 imo. Be prepared for a lot of cold memorization.
He expects you to be fluent in the subject just off one class of biochem. The exams are not based on the lectures nor the textbooks. It's based on understanding the concept as a whole to be able to answer the questions forward and backward. Please read the negative comments below and take them into consideration.(I passed advanced biochem last sem)
I wouldn't recommend him. Biochem is already pretty hard, but he makes it significantly harder. Avoid if you can.
I put about 30-40 hours a week of studying in. He expects you to know the material flawlessly. Most of the exam questions require a higher degree of critical thinking than most classes. Although I complained about his class all semester I feel like I know the material extremely well and would recommend taking him if you have to take the MCAT.
You will do well on the MCAT if you do well in this class.
The only things you are graded on are pop quizzes and exams, that's it. I never went to class, I couldn't stand being in his presence it just gave me too much anxiety because it would never apply to the exams. If you don't study on your own, you will fail and I promise you that. I had to study very hard just to maintain a C+.
Dr. Merkler is truly a great professor. You will have to work for your grade in this class but if you ever plan to go to grad school this is the class to take. If you read the chapters in the book and keep up with the studying, his class isn't that difficult to pass. The only thing is he does give pop quizzes so make sure to know all the material
Dr. Merkler is one of the best professors that I have ever had. He was so knowledgeable and truly wanted to make sure his students knew biochemistry. On multiple occasions, he would stay after class to answer questions and make sure his students truly understood the material. He really cares about ALL of his students. Take his class if you can.
He's not an easy prof but he is a good lecturer and really cares about his students. You just have to ask for help if you need it and not be afraid of him. He will prepare you vary well for the MCAT as his questions require good knowledge of the material and critical thinking skills .
Im confident I thoroughly learned biochemistry with Merkler. You need to study efficiently and consistently. Exams take a lot of critical thinking & prepare you for higher ed. My tip is to go to class, review his ppt slides, and ESPECIALLY do the textbook practice (helps build critical thinking skills!) If you do the work, you will do great.
Tough, yet simple. The TAs were mostly responsible for running the show. However, Prof. Merkler held weekly lectures in order to hear himself speak for another 1.25 hrs/wk. The only tough part of the course was deciphering his ridiculous questions on exams. He clearly did his best to make them tricky, but instead made them unintelligible.
Easy class, but not because of him. Only a small fraction of the material covered in class was actually tested. Everything on the exams was from the book and lecture slides that he rarely covered. Also, I am pretty sure the guy wanted to be a mathematician, but clearly wasn't smart enough. Should have wrote that letter.
bruh these tests do NOT match anything he be saying I will say that he does reuse questions from past tests so memorize those the material itself it not easy but the hard part is that you have to use every neuron you have to gather the info to answer a question. the people who say he prepares you for the mcat is right but don't take over the summer
If you are considering taking biochem at USF Tampa then you absolutely DO NOT WANT DR MERKLER. He doesn't know how to operate online courses, had major issues with test questions, only reads the powerpoint to you in class, no formal recitation just Q&A, tests on material more advanced than our class. Please choose a different professor please. Run
Dr. Merkler makes you feel like a bad person for not understanding biochemistry, and when he makes mistakes he refuses to rectify them. His only good quality is he is knowledgeable and replies to emails quickly. I have never taken a course where the professor actively is working against your success before his. He's mostly arrogant and unhelpful.
Very challenging course, lots to memorize. I struggled a lot and felt discouraged much of the time. I thought there would be no way I could pass. Thankfully I changed my strategy from studying from the textbook to studying from the lecture slides. This brought my grade up considerably. I'm so glad I stayed in the course because I ended up passing.
Boring attitude and voice. Hard to follow and goes off on tangents. Callous towards the student not giving much feedback and being very rude. Not helpful when you have questions or concerns. Very difficult tests that had material he didnt even teach in the lectures. Bio chem is hard but he made it harder. Actively worked against students. Beware!
I had a hard time in this class but I passed. He isn't a terrible professor, the material is just difficult in general. If I had a bigger interest in the subject I would take him again because he makes sure you know what is going on in the material in order for you to pass. I feel if I were to take his class in person it would've been easier.
Changes schedules and assignments outlined in the syllabus without notifying anybody. Expects students to be able to pass quizzes without ever teaching the material on the quizzes. Extremely inflexible and unsympathetic individual. Also falsely accused me of plagiarism despite having no proof. Avoid at all costs.
Dr. Merkler is truly a great professor. He is very knowledgeable on the topic, particularly Biochemistry. If you put in the effort, and ***go to class*** the course is passable. Honestly, if you ***go to class*** you will have an easier time with the tests, and you will get plenty of insight into how the material fits together in the bigger scheme.
DO NOT TAKE. I took this course as a stand alone after receiving my degree and in preparation for applying to dental school and it was a NIGHTMARE. David Merkler is the WORST professor I've ever had. He was rude when emailing and emotionless and indifferent when I needed reasonable accommodations due to family and personal emergencies. HE SUCKS.
DO NOT TAKE EVEN IF HES THE ONLY OPTION! He has no idea what type of questions are on the exams because his TAs make them not him. He does not teach material that we have to learn. Makes us focus on the wrong stuff for exams causing many to fail. Learned more on my own than his $600+ class that he cant teach. Just avoid at all cost no matter what!
This class incorporates material from all prerequisite general chemistry, some biology, and college algebra in addition to new material. It is a very difficult course, and you will need to study VERY diligently to pass. However, Merkler seems kind and approachable, and this course WILL prepare you for the MCAT if you learn all the material.
I took him for lab and his lab is harder than the actual biochem class. His prelab quiz is hard like he doesn't teach and when you told him about it he said "that tuff" like what? you suppose to teach it your job.
I took him for lab sure it was hard but like most of the lab class at usf is hard so. All you have to worry about is the exam but most of his question from the exam is a reuse exam question if you have practice the old exam he gave you it should be an easy A since the postlab/prelab quiz is easy.
Merkler is a nice guy, but tends to get off track during lecture. He wants his students to pass, but it is a hard course and sometimes he doesn't understand that. wouldn't say he was the worst I've ever had but not great either. 3 exams (in person) and a final with four quizzes. Powerpoints and past exams are your best friend for final.
Merkler complains about grade inflation being a problem. It is an exam heavy course, with some quizzes but nothing else. He shares secrets only with people who attend lecture, and genuinely does not care if you pass or fail because he has tenure. Does not drop lowest exam. His lectures mostly consist of him complaining about our generation.
DO NOT TAKE HIM!!! literally just gives you the book then expects you to know everything he talks about in lecture. I had to drop this class because I cannot do this type of structure. He calles it a "Grownup class" but really its a "teach yourself class". You just have to study from the book and be ready to take the exam. No homework at all.
Trust the bad ratings. 4 tests 4 quizzes. Nothing dropped no extra credit or hw as a buffer. He goes out of his way to make the questions harder than they need to be adding 4 or 5 extra layers to a question to make sure you really "understand it". So unnecessary it is already a hard class. He is aware of his rating and thinks it is funny. Avoid!!
Content for exams unclear, powerpoints to study are unorganized and not understandable.
Merkler is undoubtedly the worst professor I have had in my academic career. He is egregiously rude, to your face, both in lecture and office hours alike. His exams are also extremely difficult and heavily test on barely covered concepts, and are loaded with trick elements and unnecessary info to try and throw you off. STAY AWAY!
Do not take.
Horrible attitude, bad teacher. Seemed like he was mad at the world for being in the position he was in. After the first test had a median grade of ~50, any other professor would have changed something, but he seemed to love shrugging his shoulders at it. I only got a B because I had no other class and could focus on the rest of the exams.
It's a hard class, so then people blame the teacher but I think he's reasonable and the tests are heavily conserved with the past exams he posts. Study the powerpoints, do the practice exams and you'll definitely do well. 3 exams (100pts each), 1 final(160 pts), no drops, 4 quizzes (10pts each). Offers between 10-20% extra credit on each exam/final
Never met a more miserable professor. One of the few professors I have encountered that seem actively against helping students succeed in any way due to his own shortcomings. Offers no helpful resources, and his lectures consist of him talking to himself. You basically have to teach yourself the entire course. Absolutely do not recommend.
This class is no walk in the park, but with the right approach, it can be manageable. Utilize the practice exams and study the PowerPoints diligently. I found Unstuck study to be a helpful supplementary tool for building my knowledge. Prepare to put in the work, and you may just come out with a decent grade.
Dr. Merkler genuinely cares about students succeeding, which means he doesn't "dumb down" concepts just to get you a better exam score. He expects you to recall information from other classes and actually learn classes instead of memorizing them. The exams aren't unfair, and aren't notably difficult if you go to the lectures.
Do not take. He does not explain concepts well and then expects you to know the smallest details about them. He talks to himself and rambles about nothing for more of the class than actually lecturing. He seems like he is miserable when he teaches. Exams difficult and test you on things you really don't need to know in an intro biochem class.
His class is really hard, but is very knowledgeable about biochemistry. The exams are the hardest exams for any science class I have taken, but they are pretty fair and you really have to understand and apply the concepts to do well. He is very helpful to explain concepts though, and can give you a hard time but is a very kind professor overall.
I got the oppurtunity to spend a lot of time in and out of the class with Dr. Merkler. The people you see complaining are the same people that don't show up to class or put in the effort till the day before a test. Is the class hard? Yes. But if you are in class and do the work you'll get a good grade. Dr. Merkler is a good teacher and person
I want to continue on the previous review I posted by emphasizing the laziness of other students when complaining about this class. Everybody that complains about having to come to class or not getting an exam dropped needs a reality check and maybe to rethink what they want to do in life. Most of those students are premed. Yikes.
Dr. Merkler isn't going to make a hard subject easier just to make students like him more. I don't know why anyone is going into biochemistry (or advanced biochem 2?) expecting it to be easy. The exams are beyond fair and he's incredibly accessible for office hours and outside of lecture questions. One of my favorite USF professors overall.
People don't show up to class and then wonder how they didn't get a good grade. The people complaining are usually on their phones if they are even in the class at all. Dr. Merkler clearly cares about his students and that they actually learn the material so they can succeed later, not just get a good grade in the class
This professor has the worst demeanor and is so uncaring to students. Material was so overcomplicated by him not knowing how to teach information to students that are premed and prepared for this rigorous material. Got an A in the class but was complete agony and hated every minute that had to be spent with this professor that hates what he does.
This class is going to be hard regardless of teacher. Merkler was very charismatic and made a hard subject manageable. That being said, this class requires a TON of studying outside of class, but Merkler has office hours and welcomes people to stop by with questions. The tests are very difficult but the class is manageable if you put the effort in.
2 bonus questions on every exam, final grades are curved. Lectures go by very quickly and there are some occasional off-tangents, but he does a good job covering what he can overall. Best to study the material yourself again, anyways, since it is a lot. He's a good professor, all things considered, I appreciated him and his humor throughout.
Overall, I enjoyed the lab. They were usually interesting and hands on which made them pretty cool. Dr. Merkler was clear with the grading criteria for the lab reports and quizes so that was helpful. The 2 exams are hard so make sure to study first them.
The course was fair and the material was very interesting. Best TA I have ever had here at USF!
