This guy is the WORST professor at the college. Here's why: 1) Boring 2) Not helpful 3) Monotone voice, which makes lectures that much worse, 4) Is an EXTREMELY HARD grader on papers(if he doesn't agree, you're screwed)
Horrible teacher!
Only entertaining to the folks that know this stuff already. Grades well on tests if you use HIS study guide from the Blackboard.
He is horrible! A completely arrogant jerk! Rude! HE talks to the students like they are the dumbest people who walk the earth. I will never take a class with him again!
Of course it is a hard class. But he makes it so much harder. He thinks he is so smart that in normal conversations he uses words that no one understands. Not very many point in the class, and almost all essay form. Be advised, take another teacher if you have to take the class at all.
Overloads you with information without clear direction, tells you things you "must" know and it will not show up on on any test, disrespectful to females in particular, disregards student opinions, not helpful or approachable
Dr. Miller is a brilliant teacher. I learned more about history in 1 semester with him than I had in 4 years of high school. He is funny, interesting, but he doesn't suffer fools or goof-offs gladly.Anyone who comes to class prepared, on time, and pays attention will gain an invaluable education.
TERRIBLE TEACHER!!! Not clear, Tells what HE thinks what happend and not what really did! Pushes his opinion wayyyyyy to much, and BS's what he does not know. DO NOT TAKE HIM!!!!!
This is a really tough course. I have recieved A's and B's in 5 history courses at longview but I barley pulled a C in his course. Read and try and listen the day before the test for his key words. His study guides are very broad and almost worthless. Lectures are very broad.
Dr. Miller is one of the best history professors on this campus. So it's a hard class? Welcome to higher education. It's not his job to dumb down the course so it's easy, it's YOUR job to try hard to reach his level so that you learn something! He IS helpful and clear, unless you're goofing off.
I had the privilege of having professor Miller in both Western Civ 1 and Western Civ 2. He's an excellent communicator and the best lecturer I have ever heard. He's extremely knowledgable about history and all the different time periods. It was an honor to have had him as my professor.
He IS a diffucult teacher but I learned more in his class than any others I 've taken. If you enjoy the challenge and are interested in history then defintely take his classes. I was impressed that the guy is a virtual textbook of history even if he is a little odd.
He was one of the most hateful people I've ever met. Once, he yelled at someone for SMILING in a class. Also, on one of my papers, he told me that I needed to put quotes on paraphrased sentences. I explained that wasn't MLA, he replied, "we do things MY WAY." He had notes on ppt, and would get angry when people couldn't write fast enough for him
When listening to Dr, Miller, I always got the impression that he was completely in love with everything coming out of his mouth. He likes to give pop quizzes, so memorize all the worthless dates on his study guides. Be VERY respectful and come to class on time.He is very knowledgeable. He likes lots of names and dates on the essay assignments.
I wish someone would tell him that when the class ends to stop talking! I have other classes to get to! He tells you on the 1st day, read 65 pages..ok i did it. Then he rambled on about everything but what was on the 65 pgs. His tests are over his opinions,he thinks hes always right,he takes the notes off b4 anyone can copy them.dont take his class
Pretty good class despite the many disrespectful and lazy students.
This professor is totally hooked on himself. He gave us a topic for an essay we had no idea about. We watched a video on the topic of the essay. So, I used some of the information from the video, paraphrased. And he accused me of bringing a video camera to class to catch it all and use it in my paper. Needless to say, I dropped the class.
I got the impression this guy just isn't very friendly. Intellegent but bland.
He has a tendency to veer off on tangents that are at times interesting, but generally confusing. Tests, quizzes, and assignments are random and include information that was barely touched upon in class or the text, while major topics that took up multiple class lectures are not touched upon in evaluation at all. I could barely stay awake most days.
Brillian, knowledgeable teacher. Being demanding is a GOD thing, people. Did you want to be taught college by your mommy?
this class sucked... do not take it... it is boring and he doesnt help yuou out at all!!! he is a jerk and rude and gets mad at the littlest things! he is stupid and thinks he is funny and always does this stupid little laugh!
Miller was pretty rude to the class i was in. He got upset at us because there was a glich in the enrollment and too many people were enrolled. He would pretty much tell us that we weren't the smartest if we didn't know the answer to a question. The only thing that I liked about this class was that the final was take home. would NOT recommend!
He is not clear at all. Very confusing!!!
I enjoy his class. he is very knowledgable about his subject matter and makes the stuff interesting. He has always been polite to people who show up on time and do the work assigned.
He is the most boring and unclear professor I have ever had. He make little jokes and laughs at himself. Not specific on any thing papers, test, etc. he gives you no help on what he wants or expects
Great command of subject material, and an excellent lecturer!
he was a hard teacher but if you showed up praticapated and did your work he was fare. also you should talk to him after class about the subject because he tends to like you that much more. one more thing if you have trouble go to his office and talk to him he will help you!!!!!!!!!!
He is very smart but very arrogent. I believe he is in love with himself. He is very condecending and not very understanding. In the class I was in, he told a girl she was stupid. I did get a good grade in his class. Only take a class with him if you are willing to study, do the work and are willing to be treated badly.
He had big mood swings and often times did not want to teach the class because of his short temper with some of the students. Often times his teaching was very opinionated. I did not know I was learning history or David Miller's version of history!
I have to agree with all the other negative posts about Mr. Miller. He is very vague and does not tell you what he expects in the class. His lectures are boring and do NOT follow the books or even his study guides. I had an extremely difficult time trying to "connect all the dots" from his lectures, my readings and his study guide.
Honetly this is one of the worst teachers I have ever had. He was extremely rude and insulted the students for no real reason. I was yelled at for asking a classmate a whisered question. I dropped the class and later heard that the final was on a subject that was only covered for 2 days in class. Horrid teacher! And I agree, "short-man syndrome".
Personally, i think he is probably a nice guy. But, as a teacher I must say he is extremely difficult. He expects you to know everything from the book, gives unfair exams, and very boring lectures. Every class was a lecture. That was it. Sometimes he would throw in a powerpoint. Hard if youre not exceptionally girted in history.
pay atttentionand u will do well
He is not a good teacher! you will ask a question and he will just go in circles. He is very insulting to students. He accused over half of our class of cheating because they didnt cite their class notes!!!! now come on... DONT TAKE HIM!!!!
he SUCKS. don't take any classes from him. He plays favorites with his students, if he hates you, just drop the class. It's pointless to even try anymore. He grades very unfairly, cusses all the time, very opinionated and not factual AT ALL.
This class was horrible! He was very insulting and rude to the students. He laughed at everything he said. He hated answering questions that he thought should be common knowlegde. His tests were horrible and wouldnt go over half the information, absolutly horrible experience. Take anyone but Miller.
This was the most horrible experience in my college life. I am an A/B student and I barely passed with a D. I studied all the time, but I wasn't one of his "pets" in class. Tests and lectures very hard to comprehend.
I believe he likes to hear himself talk...I am an A/B student and I got a B in Western Civ...he talks in circles and doesn't really "teach" anything...b/c I learned nothing!! THANKS!
SCREWED ME OUT OF A!!!! DOESN'T CARE ABOUT STUDENTS. TRY TO AVIOD HIM EVEN THOUGH HE MONOPOLIZIES WESTERN CIV!!
This guy knows his stuff about the Egyptians, Greeks and Romans. He uses powerpoints and makes jokes that some students don't always get. Sleeping in his class is not a good idea, a great way to get an F for the course. I'm going to take him again for Western Civ II next semester.
I don't know what everyone is complaining about. I did well in his class. He is clear cut about what he expects, telling you exactly what he will ask on the test. Yet everyone whines about him. Sheesh.
Yeah, Miller's got complainers in his classes. He's too hard. Whatever. It is college. Learn something. His lecture on Imperialism was a lot of fun. Plenty of extra credit, easy tests, a take home final plus an essay. I don't know what everyone is crying about.
Up front about what's on his tests. Has low tolerance for slackers, lots of reading. Learn both Egyptian and Roman names for Pharaohs because he interchanges them. If you demonstrate your knowledge in class, as long as you don't question his intelligence or lesson plan, he prefers you.
Doctor Miller is very knowledgeable on the subject. He is tough but you must come prepared to learn. This class is not for slackers and losers. You have to be serious about learning to pass. He goes out of his way to help you succeed in his class. I recommend taking him.
If you're a slacker then this is the wrong class for you. The whiners are the ones who didn't listen to his instructions for the tests, failed to show up for class, often missed class for weeks at a time. I thought it was a great class, especially the lecture on Imperialism and Nationalism leading up to World War I. Stay awake and show up.
Not dropping this class in the first few weeks is my biggest regret this year. At the beginning of the semester he used PowerPoint very ineffectively. After that he went to an unstructured lecture style that went off on tangents nearly every day. He obviously is very knowledgeable, but teaches in a way that would not prepare you for a university.
the way he teaches is at an advanced pace. he is very intellectual but doesn't know how to relate his vocabulary to a student level. i don't suggest this class for beginners or people who just want to fill up their schedule with just another class.
If youre looking for a challenge this is a good place to go. He gives you a ton of info via textbooks, online, handouts and of course through his lectures. His lectures can be very confusing since he goes off on random topics quite often. If youre willing to put in some time, you almost dont even need his lectures.
If you aren't interested in history and merely just need the credit and are looking for someone easy, don't take him. He is a great lecturer, knows his stuff inside and out, and for people who really would enjoy learning details.
Western Civ. was full of information, if you dont like to write papers dont take the class, but I got an A with out trying.
Stayed on certain time periods way too long, got off subjct quiet a bit, and way to quick note slide changing.
He put down the students daily for not knowing information that we hadn't covered yet and pushed his views and ideals on everyone else. I almost fell asleep a couple of times because his voice is so boring. He always kept us late, and I was forced to walk out a couple of times so that I wouldn't be late to my next class. Bastard.
hated him. very rude and made you feel stupid if you answered wrong. straight lecture for hour and half and info he didnt go over are on the test. would not recommend to ANYONE to take him. he is the worst teacher ive ever had got a d in this class and i did every assignment and quiz/tests first d ever am A B student
The tests can be difficult and you write numerous papers, but if you're interested in history it should not be a problem for you. But if you're just trying to get a credit filled and don't care for history, don't take him. He really knows his stuff and goes into great detail and explanation. In my opinion, he's the best teacher I've had so far.
Very knowledgable, but VERY rude. You need to be in every class, and read the book to do well on his tests. Papers are graded hard as well. I love history and am a good student, and I had a difficult time in his class. I never wanted to answer questions or participate in his discussions bc he was rude to others who did, would not take him again.
Zzzzzzz. Oooooh, you know Latin. I'm impressed. But I'm not impressed with your social skills. I hear once you get to know him, he's not as condescending, but I was never brave enough to really try to get that far. Overall, pretty pretentious and makes you feel super dumb. Answers questions with questions, whose answers only ignite more questions.
Doesn't suffer fools, morons and idiots gladly. He expects you to master the material. He actually expects you to, heaven forbid, act like a college student. Oh, and I like the Latin. And seeing the look on the dummies' faces who do not get even the simply things which are said in class.
Dr. Miller is a bank of knowledge for any history questions you have. He is very passionate about what he does and it is helpful when trying to understand the criteria for the class. He is an awesome teacher who treats u like an adult. Go to class, Listen, and be there for tests and quizzes and its a great class.
I really did like history before I took this class. He is very pompus and if you don't know exactly what he is talking about your basically shunned by him. He does very much know what he is talking about but gets off subject and talks about random facts and are useless and not needed to be known. If you take this class; advice: know the handouts.
3.7 GPA student and I currently have a 60% in his class. He is not clear on anything whatsoever and his tests are impossible to study for. He never gives exact dates for tests so you have no time to prepare. He is very self-absorbed and not funny even if he laughs at himself. He needs to read the comments on this site.
I'm a 4.0 student, and this is the type of student I recommend take this course with Miller as the instruction. His expectations are quite high, but he is quite exceptional with his base of knowledge. This course was a challenge for me, but encouraged me to be a better student. He does however, push his opinions to an uncomfortable level.
took this course in the summer, studied but not that much and managed to get an B...i did attend every class and paid attention although it can be hard because of his digressions...very knowledgeable...i believe if i got a B anyone can!
he's in his own world. kinda annoying, but loves what he does. his personality is what killed it for me. just kinda uppity, but that has nothing to do with his skills as a teacher. but when your students feel you aren't relatable, they won't come to you for help. my personal problem with him.
Knowledgeable & well-spoken. His lectures were interesting. He's not very approachable, though. When describing historical figures he often said, "They did not suffer fools gladly." I felt like he was actually talking about himself when he said this. The work was on the hard side for MCC, but not unreasonable. If you work hard you can get an A.
Took this class without high hopes, but was STILL disappointed. One student (an Army Reservist, nonetheless)tended to overuse the word "nice" and Miller decided to point out the etymology of the word (used to mean "slow") and then proceeded to call this individual "nice" as often as possible. Aside- sounds just like Ben Linus from Lost.
I watched Miller go through a pile of papers in his class, read the title, and separate them into piles. He just puts grades on them, deserving or not. He told me, at beginning of semester that I would be lucky to make a D in his class, after missing only one class due to a death in the family. He laughs at questions, and does not like women.
Great Teacher! Very passionate and very generous in grading. Some writing and synthesis is needed but Miller is more than willing to work with your progress.
Great teacher! As long as you work hard in this class; you will get an A. He is very intelligent! But, even though this class is not writing intensive; you write more essays than you take tests.
Great teacher, won't take crap from annoying students. Just have to pay attention and your're good to go
He gave one test at the beginning of the semester but it was for extra credit points. The rest of his assignments were basically summarizing important events in history and putting them in order. He occasionally gives extra credit just for being in class and on time. He seems to give grades based on feeling rather than points.
Seemed kind of pretentious, but not overly so. Most of the grade comes from ordering and summarizing important events in history from your book. It's an easy enough task, but it takes up a lot of time. Tests are easy enough as well, and don't really mean that much in terms of grades.
Took his course 2 years ago. He's quite eccentric in his own way. I like history so his class was a treat due to his wealth of knowledge, the man is a historical encyclopedia. Now, he is wound tighter that guitar strings, he isn't a timid professor but it seems due to experience so don't piss him off. READ the chapters and its easy A or B.
I really liked Professor Miller's way of teaching History 120. Very knowledgeable about what he is teaching about and made the class interesting. One test was given in the beginning of the semester, and used as extra credit and the remainder of the assignments were chronological order of events 3 of them and the final a take home paper. Easy!
I found his class to be easy. You just have to pay attention and read the book. He never seemed opposed to people asking questions. As other people said, you will have to write a lot of chronological lists. He is very knowledgeable and helps you understand the mindset of the people at the time. My only negative comment is he gets off topic a lot.
Pay attention in his class. He has a lot of information that he loves to share and sometimes he goes off and gets distracted by a certain topic and will talk about it for half the class period. He is a great teacher, just go to class take good notes and you should be fine.
There is a TON of information in this class. The teacher does get side tracked very easy. He basically graded on effort. There are a lot of time BIG lines to complete but also a lot of extra credit. The final was 15 questions and ended up being for extra credit. I was surprised I got an A vs. a B or C. Stressful but a good class.
Very knowledgable, but to the point he talks too much about non-necessary information. Hardest things are his chronology papers you must write and he grades them based on length of paper more so than actual criteria, counts off for things you have in your paper so you have to show him he missed it, non-legible handwriting when he gives feedback.
As long as you show up to class and don't fall asleep there is now way you can fail, sometime he literally makes you showing up count as a 5 point quiz, and at the beginning of the semester he even gave us a complete extra credit test. EASY A!
It was hard to follow lectures because topics changed quite a bit. Power-points didn't happen enough to gain clarity. You will learn things you've never known before from this instructor, so he is interesting; however, I would not recommend this class unless you are dedicated.
Most of the grade comes from chronological assignments, which tend to be on the longer side. A few tests--most of which are extremely difficult--but you'll do well if your papers are good. Really passionate about subject, but content is boring. Go to class because he doesn't share PowerPoints on BlackBoard. You'll need those.
He is a horrible teavher. Halfway through the semester and I haven't learned a single thing. His teaching system is horrible. He thinks he's better than where he is and he does not know at all how to make anything make since.
His notes are confusing and not easy to find things on his blackboard. Constantly writingtyping notes. (Might want to recorder for this class.) Big talker, always talking before and after class. So if you have any questions you might want to send an email. Don't zone out, don't miss class, always take notes on EVERYTHING he says.
Percival War material, he is extremely knowledgeable although he bounces from decade to decade not in order. Very confusing!! Excpects long papers, but doesn't seem to actually read them.
Okay- some people on here are rating Mr. Miller a bit harshly. Miller is very knowledgeable about history, and he forces you to actually think about the material of the class, rather than just be a zombie. My advice- sit up straight, listen, be RESPECTFUL, ask questions, WORK HARD (geez, do I really have to say that?) and you'll pass just fine.
Mr. Miller is not all that bad. He is very knowledgeable and is passionate about his topics. The class doesn't stay on topic all the time but all the information you need is on blackboard. However, if he would use blackboard for grades that would be great but he doesn't. Overall it's a fairly easy course.
He stopped doing notes halfway through the semester, only talked and often got off topic. Assigned essays without giving enough information to write them, and expected an A+ paper from everyone as if it should be easy. Don't know if he has tenure but he shouldn't be getting paid for how much he actually teaches.
Miller is a history nerd and as such he takes his job seriously. He teaches as though he were teaching at a university, so you have to pay attention and take notes in class if you hope to pass his tests. Do the reading before class, pay attention, review your notes before tests, and I promise you will be okay.
Extremely knowledgeable historian. Assignments are very clear, but tough. You don't just memorize events in time; he expects you to analyze what was going on behind the scenes many times in order to understand the overall reasoning for wars and other events that took place.
He's really pretty good. It is A LOT of listening to lectures, but your grade shouldn't be too bad. I hardly studied and still did well. He does give points for attendance, so don't skip. Also if you have a paper, don't wait until the night before to start it.
Mr Miller was a fine teacher. He would randomly count attendance as a quiz grade so don't skip class. He you have to write several papers along with a take home paper for a final. He tells you exactly what to write about for each paragraph. It is time consuming, but it's just a matter of doing it with some sort of effort and you will be fine.
Professor Miller gives very detailed and extensive lectures. Sometimes that poses an issue for an optimal pace, so skim the book for main concepts. He tends to give pop quizzes on attendance on Fridays, so show up. Overall, assessing factors and motives behind surpass importance of memorizing dates. Don't text or surf the web. He will call you out
He never had any tests, just extensive writing essays. Takes a long time to complete. He's very monotone. I had a hard time following along because I'm not good at history and he assumes we know more. If you love history, you'll love him. He loves his job. He also interrupts people a lot. Loves to talk. Fairly easy A, but you have to do the work.
Pay close attention to material in the beginning of the semester& study well. You'll be thankful. There are papers that involve chronology, but aren't too difficult. He really likes to ramble, and assumes we are very ignorant and self-involved. Nevertheless, he's extremely informed about his field& likes to apply historical concepts to present day.
Do not take this professor. He seems to know his stuff but he lectures the entire class and it extremely boring and smug. It seems like he talks down to everyone in the class. Only took one test but you will have to write a couple papers about events in chronological order. Not hard but time consuming.
I really enjoyed Prof. Miller's class. He is very knowledgeable and friendly. NO tests are given grades solely on papers and chronology assignments which are easy but time consuming. He is a humorous and blunt instructor. Would suggest taking him if you have test anxiety as I do!
If you are lazy and don't want to work very hard this might be a professor for you. There will be papers that you will have to work on, there is a lot that will go into the papers, the more you write the higher grade you will get. My paper was 5-6 pages and I got a B+ I hate writing papers and this was not that hard. Would take him again.
Miller is one of those Professors you either hate or love. You cannot B.S his class, and while his assignments are simple, you cannot do them the night before.
The professor Lectures a lot, and there will be few assignments. The course I took had more than 50% of the grades due on the last day of class, so beware, you'll be stressed until the last day even if you're doing well in his class. doesn't post grades online. starts class early, ends class late. not recommended.
Modern Western Civ with Professor Miller was a good experience. He is passionate about history and wants you to think of the why's behind the what's. We had 1 extra-credit test, 1 famous-authors essay, 2 chronologies, 2 take-home essays, and 1 final quiz. Tip: Work on the papers a little each day and err on the side of more information than less.
He is very knowledge, lacks the ability to be on the students level. Pay attention, Stay off the phone. Record, write EVERYTHING down. USE HIS NOTES, they are hard to find but they are on Blackboard. He won't tell you your grade until the of the class. I was scared to speak in class. Good Luck.
Dr. Miller was the Last Proffesot I took at MCC he made me want to go into History. He is very knowlangble and acutally cares about the topic. Take him guys
