Well spoken, if soft, wonderfully nice. Excellent facilitator of discussion.
A soft teacher with great knowledge

OMG! The worst class ever with the worst prof ever! Soooooo much reading and not good reading...really boring, long, incomprehensible reading! And he himself, so boring you cannot imagine. I am warning you... DO not take this course.
yes he is so boring! he making poking your own eyes out seem like fun. But it is an easy class

Great course, really interesting. Lectures sometimes boring and one book was bad, but easy, awsome class
too much reading...but good prof, very helpful
I find this stuff interesting, so this is all good, really nice prof
He's okay... nice guy, a little boring, but this is a good course; if you have a good TA it's like storytime. The reading is insane, but no one does it all anyway. ;)
Decent professor. The lectures can be a little slow and confusing at times. There is alot of reading, and often very dry.
His lectures can be a tad confused, but are always informative. The readings are plentiful and not to everyone's taste, but interesting. To do well in his class, you do have to put in a bit of work.
omigod if he makes another star treck analogy im gonna die not bad thought kinda a bug giant geek but whatever power to him
SNORE!! Make sure you bring coffee to the class. Readings really great but not an enthralling speaker by any means. Pray he is not your tut leader too. He seems awkward in front of the class, nervous?
SFU, please fire this guy! His lecture is extremely boring, and the mid-term is totally unfair, he's quoting from the other books that we have never read. It's just a stupid class.
Mirhady is really really really ridiculously boring! He marks hard on the essays and he disses Disney too much. It's time he moved on to another profession...or not any at all. If you want to be bored to death, take this class!
contrary to popular opinion...i liked this guy! lectures got pretty boring at times, but i think first year courses are the hardest to teach, and his classical mythology course did a great job of introducing students to a lot major texts
This class LOOKED interesting, but this prof ensures it will not be..BEWARE..this is the most muddled, BORING professor I have ever experienced..did I mention BORING??????
He was an awesome professor. I dont understand why there are so many bad comments about him. I found his lectures interesting, and his tests were fair. He gave many clues as to what would be on his tests!
David really shines at upper level classes. There are less people and you get to interact with the teacher on a more personal level. He's really encouraging and his assingments are fair. I loved David's teaching and have made a point of getting into other classes with him.
Sort or boring at 830 in the morning but otherwise it was great! The tests were pretty fair/easy and the breakdown of assignments was good. You learn a lot.
The guy is indeed monotonous, but he breaks down the readings in pp slides, which are helpful. The exams are okay if you do the readings, which are great by the way: Iliad, Euripides... marvelous. 1 1/2 hour for the final not nearly enough: I wrote like crazy the whole time and barely made it.
All my friends warned me about him, that he was strange and very boring, but he was my T.A. as well and I really enjoyed the class. I found the tutorial discussions to be funny, informative and amusing. I fell asleep every lecture, but participated in tutorial (that's the important part).
This prof is very softspoken, so the way he speaks during lectures may bore those who find his tone dull, but will surely entertain and sometimes enlighten keen listeners. Students who without 1st year university writing would find his papers marked quite harshly. His exams requires thorough reading, and they are not impossible to ace.
Class looked fun but, as others have said, the boring prof ruined it. Not only was his delivery boring, but his lectures were basically just summarizations of the text WHICH WE HAD ALREADY READ. An awesome tutorial and interesting material were the only things keeping this class from being a complete wash.
one of the slowest human beings i have ever encountered...oh my god, the simplest things must be excruciatingly difficult for him. hooray for entitlement david! we enjoy your parent's money!

His lecture slides are USELESS. All they do is summarize the readings! I think I would have gone to more lectures if he made the content interesting & discussed it more. Tons of reading & lots to get through but the assignments were marked easy.
terrible. Simply terrible. The class has the potential to be good, but this man ruins it. He lectures in a monotonous voice, focusing on trite and uninspiring issues; From an academic perspective, his 'notes' are little more than endless quotes; lectures essentially consist of him reading said quotes. In class discussion is also ignored.
where do i start? his mono-tone voice? the meaningless power points? the two hours of my life wasted every lecture? don't bother going to lectures. force yourself to do the readings (which by the way, is every myth on the planet), focus on those written assignments and stay sharp for the final. you'll get something decent, no thanks to david.
the only thing that saved this class was that the material was interesting. very dry lectures.
Took by distance ed. Course materials were well written and interesting, but TA was utterly useless and unhelpful. Papers were exceedingly easy and marked very liberally.
Sleep time in class ZZZZZZZZ
I think David deserves some credit here! The books chosen were pretty good if you are interested in mythology and I think that he did at least try to make lectures more interesting by bringing in modern comparisons.
Distance Ed. The books and study guide were fairly entertaining. The papers are pretty short and marked rather easily, but very little feedback is given. Exams have some annoying quote identification multiple choice questions. If you need a W course, this is a good choice.
He is boring. Don't become jaded by the whining of 1st years who don't want to try and just thought it would be easy credit. The readings are not at all boring. If you are able at all to study... and you should if you plan on doing well, then this class is no problem. If you are lazy, it is not. The exams are memorization.
Lectures- 830am, sit in the front and you'll stay awake but at the back.. i fell asleep all the time especially with his monotone voice. but if you listen attentively the lectures are pretty interesting with his jokes. Tutorials are AWESOME. made so much more sense. easy marked assignments. overall interesting material. just the lectures are killer
Knows the subject very well. Must pay attention to him in lecture, slides just help emphasize certain points. If you are interested in mythology definitely get him for tutorial as well. Readings are not bad either, once you get used to the way the books are written they're a breeze.
Took the DE course. Readings were fine, the TA was a cool guy, Dolittle, though they are purposely unuseful. BEWARE of the Midterm, Mirhady likes to shock you out of complacency (half the class failed). But the rest is pretty easy. The essay assignments were a breeze (and they call this a W course) and the final was pure memorization.
While a perfectly pleasant guy, he's a pretty lousy teacher. His lectures are absolutely coma-inducing. In terms of work, the writing assignments are short and easily marked. However, his mid-term and final exam are extremely difficult... To an unreasonable degree. As well, the reading list is really heavy. About 3-4+ hours a week.
Boring in lecture. Everything he says is useless and will not be tested. To do well, read all his powerpoints and know the quotes well. Read the book and review using summaries from the internet and you will do well.
Sure he's nice, but that doesn't get him anywhere because he's quiet, mumbling in lectures. You don't actually learn anything because there is so much reading to do, he cant cover anything that's useful in depth. I would have not take this class and I don't recommend it to anyone.
Prof. Mirhady is an excellent professor. He is a fair marker and gives great feedbacks. Also, he has excellent knowledge of the course material and he often encourages us to express our thoughts and opinions.
Nice guy but his lectures are dry and unhelpful. Get him for tutorial if you want actual helpful info. Random note tho: He can't tell the difference between asians. (He said so himself) Papers are pretty easily marked for a W course, midterm-fair if you keep up w/the readings...final is hard.
Interesting books and material, but lectures were so hard to get through. His lectures were basically just him explaining various quotes and random unlreated topics. Otherwise, the course was good. The assigments are dead easy and very fairly marked.
dr mirhady was one awesome guy.. but his lectures were so god damn dry, especially for the material we were covering. the course was very fairly marked.. ended up with a B+ but barely studied. YOU BE THE JUDGE
Lectures were basically "story time" so pretty boring if you did the readings. Stay for the greek terms, though. Those are important for the exams. Not a very stimulating lecture if you want to go in-depth with the literature. Tutorials with TA and prof were like two different classes.
I took this class distance-ed, and from what I hear, that is the way to do it. Some of the stories are boring, but greek myth is very interesting as a whole. The essays were very short and fairly-marked. The midterm and final were just a lot of name/quote/greek word memorization, and not that bad at all. Such an easy elective!
Did it online, he had a terrible study guide covering useless information. I think SFU needs to get a new professor
Pretty funny guy. Lectures can be a little long and boring but he's really helpful if you see him during his office hours, and he is definitely very knowledgeable about his subject.
Such awesome hotness. I would so take this again, just for him... oh, and Latin.
Very dry and long lectures. Attendance is a must and weekly readings are a must. If you take good notes, have good memorization skills and come to class, this course is an easy A.
Took this class distance and loved it. Make sure you're up to date with the readings (which are really interesting ) and you pretty much wont have to study. Assignments were all one page double spaced. His lectures are thorough but I suggest doing the readings before the lecture.
Not much confidence in the course material despite having a masters. Easy class, but how he delivers lectures is PAINFULLY FRUSTRATING: slow, meandering, lots of errors, and most of the time I couldn't hear him. Extremely discouraging, especially when the textbook rendered him utterly useless. Class was designated for 30, only 7-8 attend regularly.
David's lectures can be dry but you can tell he is passionate and knowledgeable about the topic. Lots of readings but every class he goes through them and explains what they mean (helpful for papers). All papers are based on the class readings and relatively easy. Participation is important since it is a seminar.
David is extremely passionate in what he teaches. I took HUM302W with him and 80% of your grade comes from 4 papers. He is always available for extra help and he genuinely wants to see his students succeed. I would definitely recommend this class to anyone!!
One of the nicest profs out there. Really appreciated how his assignments are focused on quality rather than quantity; he doesn't make you write long essays that get tedious, but rather short assignments that make you dig deeper. I found them much more effective for learning the material. He's honestly the sweetest guy and genuinely cares.
You can tell he really likes what he teaches, but his power points are horrendous and hard to understand (very disorganized slides) . Lectures are overall quite dry and boring (he tries his best to put out as much info he can with the time he's given). I appreciate the passion and interest he has for what he teaches though.
I think SFU needs a new prof because he does not know how to teach
His TAs mark very inconsistently which leads to students losing tons of mark on their essays. Never take a class with him! He is terrible
Lectures are so so dry and his PowerPoints are hard to follow. He also does not have a clear grading criteria as his TAs mark harder than he does which leads to students in his TAs classes doing worse than students in his class. Super unfair and grading is very unfair due to this.
David is a horrid professor. He does not know how to teach or develop a proper criteria in order to provide fair marking for all the students. He makes his TAs mark hard while he himself gives 100% for the assigned papers. So, other students with terrible papers end up with a better mark if they have the prof as TA. AVOID this prof.
Despite getting so much feedback on inconsistent and unfair grading, David refuses to change his grading scheme. I do believe that he is the worst prof that I've taken a course with at SFU.
Horrible teacher and person. Greatly benefits from the patriarchy
First off he has a different grading scale so your grade is worse. Secondly he refused to bump me from a 69.96 to a 70... Like seriously? .04% and now my GPA takes a huge hit - DO NOT TAKE A CLASS WITH THIS PROFESSOR
Weekly meetings keep you on track for the assignments and readings, you will be doing several hours of reading weekly so prepare. Final paper was prefaced by 3 shorter assignments that built to the final paper. My personal experience with him was very positive both in this course and 102, clearly some other people's experiences were not as good
Took this course online. He didn't do voice recordings or lecture or power points. Just posted a weekly lesson for you to read and readings to do. Not a bad course very easy because you can pretty much take it at your own pace. 4 writing assignments across semester. Try to not let readings pile up though.
Great material, horribly vague marking. Legit gives no feedback and no reasoning for grades.
Mirhady is a great guy and the material is awesome; it is a course on Athenian law and you're only marked on a series of short papers and one final big paper. The speeches are interesting if not amazing reads. Only take this course if you're a big fan of reading and law because it is reading heavy. Great course and prof!
Professor Mirhady teaches a course with fantastic, intriguing content in the most mundane means possible. The questions on the midterm and final were extremely difficult, but not in a way that enhances one's learning ("who said this obscure quote?"). The mean for this year's final was 56%. His tutorials aren't fun by any means either.
Gave a poor mark. Too much reading in the course. Not suggested if you are taking many other courses.
Dr. Mirhady is a really kind professor who genuinely cares about his students. His grading criteria is a bit vague, but he is extremely generous when it comes to marking our assignments. If you have an interest in Greek mythology and laws, and remember to do your weekly readings, HUM 332 is a really rewarding and fun course.
Although he does not give a lot of feedback, he is very approachable, and tries his best to help his students succeed in his class. He can be reach through email, or he is often in his office. His lectures are a bit dry, but he is a funny and always makes people laugh. However, always make sure to ask enough questions for a better grade.
David is a nice guy, and his lectures can often be fun with the discussions and readings of the plays. Only critique is that for the entire semester all we did was write papers (4 short, 2 medium), then we had a final exam. Since we had no other testing, I had no idea what he was looking for in the answers, which in turn hurt my grade.
I am very interested in mythology, and the material was interesting, but the midterm was so unnecessarily difficult. The average was 55% and pretty much all the questions on the multiple choice were him quoting something from the readings, then asking questions about them.
Rubricks for written assignments were very open ended and the midterm was designed more difficult than the cumulative final. Midterm average was 55% due to some quotes being very ambigous. The final was more fair. The greek words did not have to be memorized for exams. Understand characters. If you have a busy semester I suggest not doing HUM102.
RUN! Avoid taking this course! The lectures are even more confusing than the lengthy readings, and the professor has a habit of using ancient Greek jargon..... :(
David is a nice guy and a pretty good lecturer, and clearly knows a lot about the content. However, this course is quite dense, and he assigns extremely lengthy readings that can take much longer than you might expect. Grading of the 4 short papers is fair overall. Be prepared to work a lot and study the stories thoroughly.
Davids a solid Prof, does a good job teaching mythology for beginners (imo). Funny and kind. Make sure to do all readings before class, lectures extend on those. For the midterm, study quotes and key terms/facts thoroughly for the MCQs - for the essay, if you're decent with the assignments, you're golden. Overall a solid course but requires work
Don't take this class if you care about your GPA. David gives out marks at random and seems to pride himself on failing students.
If you give this course the time it deserves, you will do well. David is a great lecturer and gives lot of insights, but you need to do the readings and understand them thoroughly before each lecture to get the most out of it. Exams are overall fair but very definition heavy - flashcards or over memory methods ftw. Great guy
Grading for the assignments is very straightforward and fair. He's passionate and funny
This course has been really fun so far. I love his little in class anecdotes. The assignments are very straightforward, just 4 little essays throughout the term. The exams can be tough, but you just have to study the slides thoroughly. Definitely glad I took this rather than the online version.
Excellent professor, lots of readings but worth it if you put in the time
David Mirhady is an alright prof. He definitely knows his stuff and I'd say the exams and assignments are fair enough, but his lectures can be a bit dry and his grading sometimes feels random/arbitrary. Overall pretty decent, though
amazing prof
Very good professor and fair in his grading, gave us all the tools to succeed, open ended tutorials gave the opportunity to ask questions and gave clarity on readings. Took student input on possible quotes for exams. Cares about every student and wants to see them succeed!
He's very chill. He even makes it clear that he's not meaning to arbitrarily push grades downwards to achieve a desired average - so the grading ends up being very fair. The tutorials were extremely helpful with the TA (thanks Joseph!) and overall David gives solid lectures. Slides are packed with quotes, super helpful for studying.
I enjoyed this course a lot more than I expected to. I've never been great with writing and literature based courses in general (I'm a STEM major) but HUM 102 with David was one of my favorite electives at SFU. The assignments are very short (500 words), only 4 of them in the whole semester. Study the slides early on to not get overwhelmed in exams
Highly recommend this prof if you don't want to do too much work outside of class. Majority of the work comes from keeping up with readings, quotes, and passages, but not bad if you start early. Assignments are very short and only 4 of them, so the workload isn't bad at all. This prof gives very fair exams. He's also nice and funny.
This was a solid intro to mythology, I really enjoyed David's teaching style, and his exams are very fair. He is caring and looks out for the class
Should've left after the first lecture where he spent an extensive amount of time talking about whether the greek goddesses were virgins.
David is a chill guy
Definitely one of my favorite electives I've taken. If you're into mythology and enjoy following along with the stories and themes, I'd totally recommend this course. David's grading scheme is super fair (mostly assignment+participation which are marked very leniently) and exams only make up a small chunk. Exams are fair.
Terrible professor. He prides himself on maintaining a terrible average grade, expect to get your GPA tanked if you take a class with him.
He was a pretty good prof, no complaints about his teaching. He doesn't curve to achieve any average, so the average could either be high or low, our average was okay. Exams can be a time crunch, but nothing unmanageable with a lot of studying. Study slides after lectures, put quotes into flashcards, practice writing essays, and you'll do well.
