I dont know what he is like, he wasnt a teacher on the Economics list so I added him.
Dr. Mitchell explains everything very well! You do not need the book if you go to class. You can use a 3x5 notecard on the tests which are all multiple choice. Extra Cred is obtained for being there and playing his educational games. 1 Quiz and HW with every unit. Great class!
A fair teacher... when he sticks to the course content it's an enjoyable class, but oftentimes he's more concerned with proving his point to the student (oftentimes in an abrupt/dismissive way) than he is with exploring the field of economics. Doesn't consider alternatives to his views as viable in most cases.
his class is extremely boring. he puts up a practice test on the internet before tests...but i don't think it helps because normally what he focuses on there isn't even on the real test. you can rarely attend class and still pull off a B
Attend class because you can easily get behind. He usually does a brief review at the beginning of each class though. His tests are difficult, but not impossible. Spontaneously gives out extra credit... another reason to attend class. Homework for each unit helps a bit. Great teacher overall.
He is a pretty hard teacher, I thought at least. his tests are really hard, but if you do good on the final he drops you lowest test score.
Economics is a hard subject. That being said, Mitchell gives lots of great examples, and only covers what will be on the test. His tests are challenging, as well as the homework assignments and quizes. Also, the option to earn bonus points in this class is presented several times. Overall, it's not his fault if you can't pass.
He was kind of a smart ass at times when its just you and him talkin. very unfair when grading homework, and tests are sooo hard!
He is extremely opinionated and unreasonable to opposing viewpoints on the issues. He does not follow the book, and at one point even contradicted the book in a test without warning us. I failed a test for the first time in this class. Nevertheless, if you read and take notes, he drops your worst test so the class isn't as difficult as it seems.
Is very smart and gets excited about certain topics in class. Uses tons of examples because he understands how not everyone gets it. Is willing to meet with you whenever you need. He is a confident person but also sees when a student is trying as hard as they can and cares even when a family member is in the hospital.
Dr. Mitchell is a great professor. His tests and quizzes are tough though. He uses real life examples in everything he teaches and will help you if you need help during his office hours.
I did not like this class at all. I had no idea what anything really ment. He tried to relate things but couldn't really. He was very stern in things, didn't involve the class at all. His tests are very difficult. Didn't seem like he wanted to be there or wanted to be teaching. He knows what he's talking about but no one else does
Economics is hard, and I was not very happy that I had to take it. However, I only missed three class lectures, and studies VERY hard and I got an A. This was by far the toughest class I had, but an A is not out of the question. He is very helpful, and gives extra credit so attend class!
Great guy, but I don't think he ever cracked a smile once the entire semester. He teaches all about graphs graphs graphs, shows all these graphs and then has maybe one or two questions about graphs on the tests. He says the book isn't absolutely necessary, but I would recommend depending on the book for the test instead of his boring lectures(ZZzz)
I made an A and really understood what he was teaching even though I've never understood econ. I only missed 3 classes and had to study for 2 hours before tests(4), and I didn't buy a book bc I took good notes in class. There is a 10 pt homework assnmnt, 10 pt quiz, and 100 pt test in every unit. The hw and quiz helped me prepare for the test.
This class was TERRIBLE. He was by far the worst professor I've ever had. Ever. He acted like he didn't want to be there, seemed thoroughly annoyed and irritated by questions. His class is all over the place and makes NO sense. He teaches everything in graphs, then doesn't even have graphs on his tests. I learned nothing. TAKE SOMEONE ELSE!!!
Smart guy, prides himself on being a hard ass so plan on very difficult tests. Homework assigned but only collected for extra credit occationally. Hard class but an A is definately possible if you study hard.
really hard! and doesnt care about the students...he is a smart *ss too!
Great teacher. One of the toughest professors I've had yet, but I feel like I learned more from him than any other. He is very helpful when aproached out of class, willing to take time to clarify the material. His tests are very challenging, so do all the extra credit work you can. One of my favorite professors.
Proffessor Miller tells you on the first day that his test are going to be hard! He isn't lying. He expects everyone to make C's if alot of people make A's he said that he will make the tests harder. I would not recommend taking this class, especially if you are not interested in economics, he is pretty boring!
A hard and not very interesting teacher
funny guy hard class
I would NOT suggest taking Dr. Mitchell. He doesn't WANT his students to get A's or B's - he told us on the first day that you should expect a C or D. I studied for every test and never got above a C. I am usually a straight A student but got a D in this class. Take another professor if you can! If you can't, then GOOD LUCK!
this was the first time he ever taught sports econ, i thought the topic was interesting and different from other econ classes. i would have been better if we could have toured a stadium like he said, maybe in future semesters?
This course is hard and he tells you that from the get go. Everything is primarily from notes. He is very adamant about asking questions. If you don't understand just ask him, he is very cordial. Great guy that will do whatever it takes to help, just know that the tests are very hard. Econ majors will want this guy, definately.
The class is very hard but interesting. He gives good real world examples and will explain in good detail. Dr. Mitchell is a funny guy and tries to make this subject very interesting mainly because he loves it so much. Go to class take good notes and study hard.
Great guy and Fantastic professor. I actually took him in the Fall semester but feel compelled to tell you how great a teacher he is. He makes everything crystal clear and always uses examples to do so. The tests are actually pretty easy. I got an A on all of them and a B on the final. He is my favorite ECON professor.
Much of what he teaches is common sense, but the class moves a little too fast for me to remember the vocabulary he uses on a regular basis, which is necessary to know to figure out what he's talking about.
Dr. Mitchell is one of the best proffesors I've had. Eco is hard, so if you want a good grade you have to study. Not only would I recomend him, but I've taken multiple classes from him and plan to take more. His class made me change my major to ECO! P.S. if you're in a principles class use his online practice exams and weekly quizes to study.
I love this guy's methods. He is straight memorization. Learn a lot of good stuff about why things are the way they are in sports.
Theres a quiz every week so you need to go to class. tests are 70% of final grade. Hes smart and knows his stuff just don't think teaches it well. I struggled for a C
Funny Professor and clearly knows his stuff but the exams are extremely difficult. You don't know what to expect or study going into the test and the book is rarely helpful. Not to mention the 9 page paper that you have to write. I know some students who have been successful in his class, I just want to say proceed with caution.
Makes the class very interesting. He talks alot about his political beliefs, but also explains why he is right. He is not forgiving on taking quizzes and tests late, which I like. If you don't try, you shouldn't have the opportunities everyone else has. He has two "experiments in his summer class; both of which were fun and informative.
Great professor, but it will be difficult. You will have to actually learn and study to do well in the class. Expect 10 page research paper and tough exams.
Take him! I am not a fan of Economics, but him, I could listen to. He gives papers you have to type from newspaper, but that's easy. I do them in 45min night before and get full credit. You have 5question quizzes a lot, but he doesn't pop them! You have 4 exams the semester but we dropped lowest exam in return for optional final. HE'S HILARIOUS!!
Very funny guy. Tests are easy if you pay attention and study a little. Optional final. Homework and quiz due every week.
Super funny guy! He does not really believe in technology so do not bank on that if you are wanting feedback or usually need fast assistance.
Great guy, not the best teacher. Forget about stuff sometimes, and does not use blackboard. Never really know your grade. No study guides but you do get a test note card. Around 10 homework assignments, 3 tests, final (optional) replaces lowest test score. Pop quizzes. No book, but Wall Street Journal subscription required.
Clearly knows what he's talking about but not a great teacher. Mumbles and handwriting is terrible. You have to go to class to pass because he doesn't do anything online. All notes are written on the white board and you never really know what your grade is. Also second and third tests are ridiculously hard.
Tests 2 and 3 are terribly hard, be prepared to try to decipher handwriting on the board. You will not do any example/practice calculations in class but on the tests they will be there. The most difficult class I have taken thus far in college, test and quizzes are hard.
Dr. Mitchell is the best professor at MSU. He WILL make you work but you will learn so much from his courses. His tests are a mix of multiple choice and essays and can be hard. His classes are very challenging and no joke but you receive so much knowledge, it's worth it. He's an awesome person too, probably the smartest guy on campus.
Goes very fast. Almost hard to read his writing on the board. You write a lot of papers from wall street journal. Mini quizzes and 3 tests. Does not take attendance but you should go to take notes. Does not post grades online. Tough class if you don't put in time to pay attention and go over notes/study
Dr. Mitchell is probably the worst teacher I've ever had. He's cynical and comes across as arrogant and rude. Everything is explained very, very quickly and in no detail. I study and study for that class and I'm borderline failing it. He doesn't take attendance, but you should go to take notes. But if this isn't a required course, DON'T DO IT.
I have never struggled so much in a class. He is obviously very smart, but there is no textbook in the class, he talks extremely fast, writes fast, and I had a lot of trouble reading his handwriting. He does not seem to care about his students at all and he doesn't use blackboard so you never know your grade. I would avoid at all costs.
Dr. Mitchell is one of the best prof's in the whole university. He's down to earth and expects you to study and learn economics. If you don't want to study, think critically, ask questions, or write coherently in the exams, well, you might want to major in something else or just don't bother going to college at all. Just go get a low paying job.
I have never felt more disrespected as a student in my life. Tests entirely based on lectures, which aren't well organized. Test questions are largely based on points he barely touches, meaning you almost always lose points for something you couldn't have seen coming. I'm the type of girl who always gets A's in econ classes, but not today.
This Teacher know what he is talking about but cannot teach at all. 4 exams, that's it for points. No study guide, no book, no sources. Just your notes taken in class. See him in office hours and he will help. Overall great guy, just a terrible teacher.
Mitchell was not only very rude but, did not know how to teach. He mumbles as he does an equation and spout off the answer, his syllabus says what you will go over, but he does not cover any of that. Got onto others for going to the bear claw calling them homeless people who do not know what they are talking about and puts info on test not covered
Do NOT take him. I had to drop within the first few weeks. I needed this as a prerequisite for the college of business. I believe most of his classes require you to watch his online lectures which are extremely confusing and scatterbrained.
Dr. Mitchell does not care about anyone or their success he is extremely rude. He is not good at teaching either. He is quiet, he writes on the board and his handwriting is about the level of a first graders, and His lectures are confusing and have no reasoning to them. There is only quizzes and tests and small extra credit from weird Econ games.
This class is great for anyone who likes to learn on their own. Dr. Mitchell is extremely competent and has dry humor. I dont recommend for people who struggle in school. Dr. Mitchell is unsympathetic to those who do poorly. If youre a higher-lever learner you should take the class. I gained a lot of knowledge and insight into economics.
If you are looking for a caring teacher who cares about your performance in the class, Prof. Mitchell is not the one. Although he has lots of extra bonus points, his lectures are pretty boring and require lots of note taking. His quizzes for HW are timed and HARD. Tests are pretty easy. He will never respond to your emails.
He just writes random things on the board for notes and his handwriting is awful! There is no organization to his lectures. Its like if someone were to try to explain to you what a turtle without is without using the word turtle or even telling you it's an animal.
With cynical quips ("Who's going to lend you the money? ?") and the same supply and demand graph drawn 450 times, Dr. Mitchell got the basic points of macroeconomics across. The lack of a real syllabus to the class was frustrating, as was the monotonous pace. The only grades are from tests. Even motivated students may drift off sometimes.
I just wouldn't take this professor again. The difficulty of the course is too much for the absolute absence of the teacher. Really. He is not in his office when he should be. I am sure you can get to him somehow, but he makes it very difficult. Test are less than 15 minutes. some questions are based on video's where the answer is a fly by comment.
12 quizzes, 4 tests. That's your entire grade. ALL of the material is taught through youtube videos from several years ago. There's sample tests on his website; use them! Every assignment is on Blackboard, and you can't even see what you got wrong without going to class. HE WON"T COME TO THE ASSIGNED CLASS UNLESS YOU ASK! Very frustrated with him.
Professor Mitchell is obviously knowledgeable, but his lectures are way too advanced for a beginner class like this. I always felt behind from the beginning due to lack of groundwork. Biggest issue is that homework and tests in no way match the lectures. Outside resources are necessary if you want to get anything out of this class. Can't recommend.
Professor Mitchell clearly knows what hes talking about, but I dont think he realizes that many students taking this class arent educated on the basic terminology or structure of the subject. He doesnt allow laptops for note taking either. His handwriting is horrible, he mumbles a lot, and he is impossible to access outside of class.
Loved Dr. Mitchell. Definitely have to go to class or else you won't have the info you need to study. Everyone hates him because he is "harsh" but he just does not baby you through his class. Lectures in class, quizzes on your own time online. Don't have to take the final if you are happy with your grade at the end of the semester.
He knows what he is talking about but the way he explains things is unorganized and not helpful for people with little to no knowledge of economics. Lectures are old videos on YouTube. They are boring to watch and aren't that organized. Draws 900 supply and demands graphs on the board but doesn't really explain how they connect to the concept
Signed up for the in-person ECO 155 and showed up the first day and it was all online after that. Only grades are quizzes and tests and the lectures are 40-minute videos from 2014, he was very hard to reach outside of class.
I took this as a blended class, and all we did was watch and take notes over videos he recorded 5 yrs ago. You then have 1 attempt to take a quiz over three 45 minute lectures, and you can't see what you get wrong so you don't know how to study. Class consists of 12 quizzes and 4 exams, and thats it. No extra credit offered and hard to get an A.
DO NOT TAKE MACRO WITH THIS MAN. YOU WILL HAVE TO BASICALLY TEACH YOURSELF.
Online you must watch old lectures from YouTube and take a dozen quizzes and 4 tests. Make sure to pay special attention to the lectures and take good notes, they will help, trust me. And you can drop you two lowest quiz grades as well so that's cool.
I specifically took this class because it was supposed to be in person one day a week and the other day online. You walk in on the first day of class and he tells you it's actually going to be all online. He mumbles on his lecture videos and you can't even figure out what the graph he has down is about. Tests and quizzes are extremely hard.
Grade is all Quizzes/Tests. Entire class is online lecture videos on Youtube from a few years back. Pay attention and write down definitions. Youll spend a lot of time on graphs he loves to draw so get used to them. Tests aren't too hard. An A is achievable if you have some previous understanding of economics. 2 words SUPPLY & DEMAND.
Dr. Mitchell knows his stuff. His tests are hard, but once you get a gist they get easier with time. Little to no homework. He cares and wants you to succeed, but he's also a no nonsense kind of person, and that I enjoy. His class is one of my favorites this semester. Take Macroeconomics from him if you take it from anyone.
This class is an online class do not be fooled by the blended name, if you are down to watch 33 youtube video lectures go for it, but it wasn't the best.
I LOVED Dr. Mitchell's macro class. Lectures every class, but he gives examples of most terms and actually wants everyone to understand the material. 4 tests, the last one being difficult, but I still got an A with all the extra credit. You literally get extra credit for being off your phone in class, so if you fail, that's on you.
As I round out my senior year I can say this is the worst professor I have had in my four years at Missouri state. His lectures were nothing like his tests and I felt as though I was being set up to fail. I am lucky I got the grade I got. Take someone else or wait for another semester till you can. RUN!!
He is a good guy. Not a good professor for a 100-level class. His lectures have no slides, no base to go off of. Just graphs. A whole lot of graphs. He does give out a lot of extra credit, and he is funny. But 60% of the grade is tests you are going blind into, and 40% quizzes (open note). Do not take if you have no previous economics knowledge.
There is no online component whatsoever besides quizzes and any practice problems he gives out. If you take good notes and learn the basic concepts, the tests are incredibly easy. The exams are much more of an application than definition. He uses a lot of graphs to explain the concepts. He is also very funny. He also likes answering questions.
His class is lecture and test ONLY. Attending office hours is very important for his class and understanding. He drops two quizzes and one test, but how you score on them is your whole grade. Very old school teaching, of printing out tests, writing on the whiteboard, and only pen and paper.
I am going to avoid taking any classes by him in the future.
He is a really funny and engaging professor, but his teaching style is very old school. If you sit in the back of class you will have a hard time reading his chicken-scratch on the whiteboard. There is no homework and the two lowest quiz scores are dropped. As long as you do all extra credit and ace each quiz you can afford to fail a couple tests.
Honestly, if I didn't have to take this class for my major, I absolutely wouldn't. He does not take much of his content from a textbook. Also, most of what he teaches, I feel as though he doesn't explain it correctly. I am always confused in there. He drops the 2 lowest quizzes, though, and offers some extra credit. Otherwise, not a good class.
Please for the love of everything do not take this mans online class.
I loved Dr. Mitchell, his class was always a good time. His teaching style is quite traditional. He mostly draws graphs and writes definitions on the whiteboard. He doesn't allow any technology. The grades are all quizzes and tests. He does give extra credit--1 point for every class he doesn't have to get onto anyone. That's how I got an A.
He seems like a nice guy, and that's the only reason I'm not rating him lower. He writes all of his notes by hand on the white board and it's almost impossible to decipher sometimes. He doesn't post any of his notes online either so you're just stuck. This is already a difficult class and he just makes it so much harder, would not recommend.
He taught Eco409 (econometrics). Even though he doesn't usually teach it. It was absolutely awful. I would try to email him to get help and he would tell me to google it or look up YouTube videos. Told me I wasn't trying hard enough and didn't see effort from me. Absolutely horrible. DO NOT TAKE!!!
Dr. Mitchell is a funny guy, but he isn't a good teacher. He has a lot of content in tests and quizzes that he doesn't talk about in his lectures. His quizzes are also very difficult, as they are 10 tough questions in only 15 minutes. He's not the worst teacher in the world, but he isn't one that I'd recommend. His class is just super tough.
Genuinely this guy just talks about what he wants to. No idea what was happening the whole time, even though I payed attention and went to every class. Still did horrible on the quizzes, not worth it don't take him.
Mitchell is very smart in economics but explains at a higher level than entry-level students need and in roundabout ways. Class is boring and lecture-heavy. Grades come from exams and quizzes. There's a “bonus point system” for in-class work/attendance, but it's unclear how those points are calculated.
He's a funny person, but his teaching style isn't the best. His classes are so fast-paced that if you get distracted for even five minutes, you won't know where you stand and you'll feel lost. The tests and quizzes are difficult. He sometimes offers opportunities for extra credit. I don't recommend taking his class.
Macro with Dr. Mitchell is completely lecture, no reading. He does all his lectures in person and doesn't allow any electronics out in his classroom. If you miss one day, you'll be lost, because your neighbors notes will be indecipherable without hearing the lecture. Mitchell is confusing, and never in his office. 4 tests are worth 50% of grade.
I took this class honors, and it was the most difficult class I have ever taken. I felt like Dr. Mitchell jumped around in his lecture a lot, and it was difficult to know exactly what I was supposed to be looking at on the board since there were so many things happening on the board at once.
He is a big talker and would go on long tangents about many things but is passionate about the material which is nice. I personally enjoyed the class, and because I showed up, I got extra credit for attendance. The tests and quizzes can be difficult at times.
Mitchell is very old-school. He has completely banned electronics in his lecture hall and is not great at responding to emails. However, his lectures are very in-depth and he is a great help if you visit him in person. He provides free econ textbooks on Brightspace to look up any material if needed as well. His teaching style is difficult though.
