I feel a little sorry for this professor. He is totally clueless, but i feel even worse for his students. Do yourself a favor and do not enroll in any of his classes.
I will remind students Morse is Dept.Head. Any unhelpfulness may be, in actuality, complete busyness on his part; he earned the title not by neglecting his class. He is a teacher who takes interest in students who take interest in English, for whom guidence and understanding are offered.
this teacher is very smart but also very hard (deen of the eng dep.). expects too much from students. very demanding on attendence. Willing to help anyone but most of the time makes students feel stupid. it seems like nothing satisfies him. :(
Hate is not a strong enough word. Prof Morse is just a mean teacher, he insults his students and does not deserve to be dept. head. HATE!!
Dr. Morse is not easy, but he makes himself available to work with students when they need help. He is very helpful if you want to put the time into the class. You will learn how to write in his class.
This teacher is a you know what. He do not have any scrupples. I can't stand him. He don't care about anybody but him self. He should not be ahead of any deptarment. He diss all the good teachers in the English department. And I think he is just lonely and needs someone.
his class is not easy but we are here to learn. As long as you show up, do your work, and participate in class you will be fine. I hate writing but I passed with a B.
Dr. Morse's class is difficult, but I think the student who wrote the very poorly written rating (two ratings down) should consider retaking him!
Dr. Morse is not a difficult instructor. The students who left negative comments do not seem that interested in the subject to begin with. If you utilize him, he is very helpful. Basically if you are a responsible student, take him and you will learn. Lazy students, BEWARE.
Dr. Morse is a great professor-if you're willing to put the work in. The people that complained are probably the one who don't think they should have to show up or turn things in on time. He's demanding but extremely helpful if you go to him and ask for it. I would definitely take him again.
The course itself was not difficult. He is an overly critical grader and does not supply students with suffienct feedback. One must ask themself, why a person with a Ph.d in english is teaching at the community college level? You likely will learn more and have success with a different professor.
I love English and Literature and Essay Writing but after taking this snob - he could make me HATE my chosen field! I write as well as he does (I'm a paid writer) and speak better. He is not a good teacher - and he makes you hate English!
Dr. Morse is one of the best English professors at LBCC. He certainly demands punctuality and responsibility from his students, but that only comes to show that he really cares about their success. Remember that an easy teacher does not prepare you for the next level. If you are willing to meet deadlines and present quality work, take him.
Expects a lot, not an easy class but he is willing to help. VERY strict on tardiness and cell phones, reminds me of high school.
the worst teacher ever...he expects his students towrite as good as him...i hate this teacher...
HES A REALLY GOOD TEACHER. REMEMBER YOU WILL HAVE TO READ AND WRITE FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE, SO YOU NEED A GOOD TEACHER TO TEACH ALL THAT AND DR, MORSE IS THE RIGHT ONE. IF U GET EASY TEACHERS IN COMMUNITY COLLE THEN YOU WONT BE WELL PREPARED FOR A CAL OR UNIV... IT'S YOUR CHOICE... HES STRICT BUT NOT BAD AT ALL... -KIBO-
Dont let people tell you that Dr. Morse is a "bad" teacher. They probably didn't care for the work and were being lazy bums. He makes sure you understand the work and does it quite entertainingly. Take him and learn something. Remember, this is college people!
he was a good teachera a little hot
Excellent teacher. Not easy, but always willing to help. Class was discussion, not lecture. I'd take him again.
The class was a lot of work, but not that hard because Dr. Morse was always available. One of the best classes I have taken.
He is the best English Teacher I ever had. I wish I had him in high school. He is really tough, but he doesn't expect you to know everything. I like how detailed he is when he explains things. Take him if you really want to learn English.
I LOVE Morse! He is an AMAZING teacher. Take him! He is tough but well worth the effort. He cares for his students. He is passionate about English and he wants you to succeed. TAKE HIM! No cell phones in class.
Good teacher. You will learn a lot from him. Just turn your cell phones off before you go to class. You dont need to buy expensive books.
Morse expects a lot but he was always willing to help. I would take his class again.
Close minded. Class more boring and tedious than it has to be. Don't be fooled by his external personality: take another professor's course if at all possible.
DR. Morse is very knowledgeable, he definately knows his craft. He is an extremely difficult teacher and I would suggest NOT to take his class. He expects too much from his students, not to mention that he talks down to you for not knowing things that you are still trying to learn. He doesnt inspire his students but turns them away instead.
He is a demanding and straight forward teacher. He will not negogiate his own terms for the class. He is clear on what he wants from you. That being said, avoid taking his class.
Morse is a great professor. He is strict, but he is always willing to help and wants his students to succeed. This was one of the best classes I have taken.
I really enjoyed this class. The professor was helpful and made class fun, and we learned a lot. He seemed hard at first, but he did not grade hard in the end. I would recommend him.
Dr. Morse is a great teacher. Yes there's reading assignments, but it's a college english class! He is extremely helpful and wants you to ask for it! Intimidating at first, but you soon see this is a professor who wants his students to be prepared and do well. Now attending CSULB I'm thankful I had a class with Dr. Morse.
The way he runs his class is not for the independent learner. The only way to receive a good grade on an essay is if you ask him for help. He talks down to his students and makes you feel inferior. His favorite thing to say is, "If you didn't need my help you wouldn't be taking this class." He's arrogant and big headed.
Great teacher. Class topics were interesting and the environment was good. He's always available to help students improve. He's not as funny as he thinks he is, but he's okay. Independent learners can do fine, but he also encourages students to come to him for help so everyone can do well. Take the class.
Morse seems like a tough professor because from the first day of class he sets very high expectations. I was disappointing because some people passed with A's that I felt did not deserve it, especially after working my butt of for mine! Just keep visiting him in his office hours for help to show that you are making effort and he will appreciate it.
Morse is a great professor. He is always willing to help his students and had extra office hours sometimes. He has high expectations, but if you are willing to work you will learn from him. I would recommend him to anyone.
I loved Morse's literature class. We had great discussion with a lot of people participating. Morse gave everyone a chance to give opinions, and that made the class fun. He seemed hard at first but really was not in the end. I would definitely take his class again.
Pretty good professor. Had him for Intro To Lit. with a focus on literary works by minorities. Good reading selections and interesting content in the form of plays made this class kick ass! The Chris Farley comment is true ...but I think it's more his Chris Farley accent that does it rather than his appearance. Good prof and cool class!
I had Dr. Morse for English 3H, and for my last semester at LBCC, i took him for English Lit. There's no question that his class is not as easy as the other classes, but what's really good about him is the fact that he gives you the grade that you actually deserve. I've learned so much from his class, and I absolutely recommend him. One of the best
This is a PROFESSOR. The class was pretty tough but he is helpful and acutally cares about his work and the students' work. His expectations are high, no doubt, but it will make you a better student in the end.
amazing
wonderful
the best
This teacher is fantastic...one of the best English teachers I've ever had. Anyone who says they don't like him have to be students who don't like to think. I thought this class would be easy (I love eng) but Morse makes you work for your grade. He tells you what you need to work so that you're the best you can be. I definitely recommend his class.
Yes I agree...he does care and expects a lot out of you but only AFTER he teaches it to you. Hes a great teacher and taking his class will definitely benefit you for the rest of your college career.
Mr.Morse is a attentive professor, he is understanding but quite talkative during lectures. Be prepared, ontime to class and you'll need to bring your books everyday. I received an A in the class but I worked hard to achieve.
Mr.Morse is a likeable professor his test are from the notes you take in class, however there is a lot of reading and analysing the readings be prepared to read and you'll do fine.
Makes you buy a new copy of his own textbook and sign sheets from the books to verify that you purchased them new. Sorry, you can't try to find a previous student and buy the books cheaper. He is one of the only English teachers to assign homework other than essays. You must turn in typed reading responses. Great if you have time for extra work.
He is still my favorite after almost 4 yrs of college. I took him 2 yrs ago but I wanted to note on here that he is such a good professor! I didn't even like him during the course because he was tough but I am now very thankful for his lectures! Very effective in my academic life. Thank you Professor!
I am not the strongest writer, but I will definitely say that Dr. Morse helped me improved. His in class lessons are a bit boring, but overall he is such a great professor! I would take his class again if I could.
Buy his books, sign the first page so he has proof you purchased it, show up to every class, write five essays including a few summaries, and get a C.
Best professor ever!He is very clear and thorough. He will definitely grade you hard, but it will help you improve! Loved his class and discussions.
I did not care for Dr. Morse whatsoever. He has a very strict attendance policy and was anal about tardiness. I found it hypocritical that nearly every class he kept us over- sometimes up to 10 minutes. He is an extremely harsh grader and you know who his favorites are in class. I am an English major but Dr. M made me think twice about my decision
I took Eng 3H with Dr.Morse and he is very strict on attendance and completing ALL assignments. If you stay on top of the work and see him during office hours, you will do fine. He doesn't want students to worry about their grades but to try their best to improve their writing. He is a harsh critic and refuses to proofread.
Dr. Morse is just the hardest grader I ever had. That being said, he made me into a better writer. Because of him, I am now confident when it comes to writing essays. He even offered to write me a letter of recommendation to the Honor's Program, which was great! Take Dr. Morse if you want to improve on your writing, which you will.
The hardest and certainly strictest college professor I've ever had. That being said, it was worth it. He taught me more than most of my other college classes combined. IF you bomb your essays (or just don't do as well as you like) he lets you rewrite them after his notes. Do all of the weekly assignments, get the books, do the reading.
I took Dr. Morse this semester. Although not his fault, I had to drop his class due to life problems. He assigns a lot of papers and as long as you do all of them, he will allow you to re write one of your choice at the end of the semester. He's always happy to help you and go over your papers during his office hours. Go to them! You'll need it!
Lots of textbooks needed. Being absent will affect you. Lots of reading and writing. Great teacher and very diverse class.
I'm not shocked to see that Morse has an imperfect score on here, but I think that he is the perfect kind of teacher. He is very strict on tardiness and cell phone use, but I think that policy is beneficial to the student. He is definitely a tough grader, but I actually feel proud coming out of his class a better writer after working for my grade.
Prof Morse is brilliant and funny. People giving bad reviews probably don't like you have to try in his class. It isn't easy, it's worth it. You learn so much from him. He is very understanding if you talk to him. His expertise makes you a better writer. He cares and is devoted to student success. Take his Eng 45 class, it's life changing!
Professor Morse presented himself as a tough educator and non tolerant for the rules he set out. However, he only made comments on 30% of the postings, and they are brief, non productive--there are dialogues missing. It is not fair for the feed backs we need to gauge our ability of reading, writing and analysis.
Dont take this class unless you want to second guess why youre in school :) hardest Professor, acts like everyone should be expected to get As, has his favorites. Grades extremely hard class consisted of discussions and essays. Lots of readings and a lot of textbooks required. Do not take him!!
Definitely the hardest class I have ever taken You have to purchase 3 textbooks if you don't go to class you will not pass He requires you to have your camera on and if you don't he will call on you randomly One of the hardest grading teachers I have ever met the zooms are boring 2hrs 15 mins& not interesting if you have the choice do not take him.
Dr. Morse is okay but, it often feels like he talks down to students. His grading is unusual because there isn't an option to see your grade on canvas. There are two exams but, they're very extensive. Not the very understanding when it comes to missing a class or assignment for personal reasons.
I loved Dr. Morse. His discussions of the reading were always engaging and he knows how to make things funny. He can sometimes have a pretty dry and straightforward way of talking about things which could be off-putting for some. His essays and tests were decently tough, and he grades hard. He lets you re-write essays after he grades them
Tough grader, strict, and controlling (one of those professors who seems to never be content with anything). He will not let you skip assignments (will bug you to make them up and will make you feel guilty if you don't). Also, this professor does not really go deeper than basic plot when discussing readings. No electronics allowed (even computers)
He grades your essays so hard and doesn't have a clear guide for what he is looking for. He does not give good feedback on papers. If you do not have a good average on your papers, you will not get an A. He does not update your grade until AFTER the semester is over. Also, he has a massive ego. I wish I took someone else.
Don't skip this class. Seriously, you'll regret it. The midterm & final are based off class discussions so participate/follow along with what your classmates are saying. He points something out, you highlight it! His essays are fun- gives you free range on topics if you want, just discuss it with him before hand. He will help you if you let him.
Don't listen to other people here, he's a great professor that you'll learn a lot from if you just listen to what he's actually saying and put the effort in to do well in the class. Very clear with what he wants out of us as students, and puts a lot of effort into making sure that we're able to do well, even despite his tough (but fair) grading.
Dr. Morse is an amazing teacher. He really cares for his students and wants the best for them. Lectures can be lengthy and tedious at times, but going to his office hours is necessary for extra help. Definitely a difficult class, but if you put the work in, you'll come out a much better writer and student. If you want a challenge, take his class.
David morse was a alright professor who cared however his policy was a mess if an accidental phone call went off in class. accident or not he would assign work for it, and it was outrageous and I would say if you're recently going into the honors program for the first time do study and prepare as this class is super heavy loaded.
David is belittling to his students, and imposes unusual discipline for his very stringent rules. If we were caught with any electronics David would immediately embarrass the student by calling them out. David threatened to lower grades based on tardiness, absenteeism and even if a paper clip was not used to bind our essays. I would not recommend.
Dr. Morse taught me the right way of writing essays which nobody ever did. Best English class by far. But he is a very tough grader, no electronics allowed too. I would take him again, but I do NOT recommend him to others because his class is so tough. If you take him, make sure to do ALL papers and always ask help during office hours.
Most of his lectures could be an announcement on what pages to read out of his book. He has made comments in class that makes women feel uncomfortable. And you wont understand what an A paper is until you're two essays left (total was 5). And avoid if you're a stem major, he thinks his class is a high priority, and expects you to think the same.
Dr.Morse has a gigantic ego. This class is not for the weak. You will be in shocked by your first grade on your first essay, and will probably fight for your life to get an A. This class is high demanding and will point out any or all flaws in your writing. like he has this mentality of "I suffered during grad school so My students must suffer".
The class is structured as though we are all English majors and we have all the time in the world to devote to just his class. Any critical comments/reviews made on this page are accurate. His requirements for an A paper were unclear most of the semester. He doesn't input grades either. Do yourself a favor and take anyone else but Morse.
Professor Morse is strict, but his rules are clear and fair. He expects everyone's best effort, but he is available to help outside of class if you need it.. His assignments force you to think. I think the negative reviews here are from people who procrastinated and did not put the work in. Take the class seriously and you will benefit from it.
The readings were all from minority writers, which was fun. The paper topics were interesting. The best part was the class discussions, where everyone was encouraged to participate. This professor does expect you to work but he is also there to help you do well. I recommend the class.
Honestly not bad of a teacher but his grading is very very strict, with no clear guidelines as to how to make your paper better. Will ask you to go to office hours to critique your essays but when you fix them to his standards they still aren't good. Weird vibe overall, kind of patronizing, would not recommend his class so please find another prof.
Professor Morse makes the class fun and comfortable so people speak up willingly in discussion. He has high standards for grading, but he will walk you through what you need to do to improve. He really gives feedback on papers so that you can improve your writing. He is also understanding when real problems come up in your life.
Professor Morse's class really helps you to improve your writing. He gives a lot of feedback on essays and is always available for conferences to go over what you need to do to improve. Some class meetings involve lecture, but most are discussions that are open and interesting. He really does all he can to help each student do well.
Dr. Morse's class was great. He does require books but tries to keep them cheap, and at least you do really use them. His assignments are interesting and he is always available to help with essays. He does have rules on attendance and electronics but they are not unreasonable. Great class overall.
This class was a lot of fun. The workload was not too heavy, and we had great class discussions. We only had to write two papers and Dr. Morse was always available to help improve them. He wants his students to do well and is very available. I would recommend this class,
Professor Morse's class was interesting and useful. He engages the students and gives great feedbaxk on essays. The class was a faie amount of wqork but not too bad. I would definitely take him again.
This class was great. The readings were interesting and the discussions were excellent. Dr. Morse was very clear and really helpful with the papers. There was a fair amount of reading but nothing unmanageable, I learned a lot and would recommend the class.
very nitpicking even other profs say to avoid him
Professor Morse is detailed and a little demanding, but he is always available to help you do your best in the class. The class is really interesting, with great readings and discussions. If you want to learn to write better, i definitely recommend this professor's classes.
People claim that Dr. Morse is a hard grader, but if you just do the work and pay attention, his course is not that difficult. He does have high standards but he is very available to give help and gives good feedback. He will make you a better writer. I would definitely take him again.
English 2 was an interesting and useful class. I got to read things by a lot of writers I would not otherwise know about, and the professor helped me improve my writing greatly. Class discussions were fun, with a lot of exchange of ideas. The reading load was not very heavy. I would take the class again.
If you want to improve in writing, this is a great class for that. He talks a lot but is funny. If this is a class you're just trying to get by, this is not the class for that. The final grade is determined by how you improved in your writing; he doesn't provide that online. I wouldn't take this class again, but I'll definitely be grateful I did.
Lecture/class discussions can be fun, though Morse consistently brings it back to his own opinions. The harm is his feedback on papers--super condescending and brutal--and grading scheme. He downgrades everyone on the first submission A ->B or B->C to "encourage" students to consult with him. This feels super coercive--a kind of academic date rape.
Don't take this class thinking this is an "easy A" because you will fight your life for it. He has high standards and wants you to write in a specific way. He will help you to improve your writing skills and is always available during office hours. I am very grateful for him because my skills have improved, but I will admit that this was very hard.
Dr. Morse is a professor you should take only if you truly care about your academics. His expectations are high but fair, and you will grow as a writer in his class if you put in the work. He's dedicated, passionate, and even wrote the textbook himself. You can tell he genuinely wants his students to succeed.
Dr. Morse is not easy, but he is always available to help. If you go to him for input, your graxes will be fine. I learned a lot in this class, and I would definitely take him again.
Dr. Morse's English 2 class was fun and I learned a lot. He uses writers from a lot of different backgrounds, so you learn about cultures as well as literature. He is not an easy grader, but his grading is fair, and he is always available to help you do better. He really cares about his students. I would definitely take his class again.
This class was so much fun. The readings are interesting and diverse, and Dr. Morse made it easy for everyone to participate and exchange ideas without pressure. His reputation as a hard grader is overblown: go to him for help and he will make sure you learn how to do a paper well. I learned a lot in this class and would love to take it again.
Dr. Morse's class was fun. The writings are all by minority writers, and the class discussions were great. He has high standards for writing but he is always willing to help you reach those standards. Just work with him and you will do well.
I loved this class. The professor is detailed and accessible, and he really wants to help everyone write better. I would take him again for any class.
Imma be completely honest here, this class made me wanna drive 300 mph down Carson street. Mr. Morse himself is chill, and actually funny at times. But essays were a lot. There were 4 essays, with one research paper at the end. He's a pretty strict teacher when it comes to grading, but going to Office hours will help very. Prob wouldn't take again!
If you're reading this, it's already too late. This class will have you praying to God for mercy because this professor won't. If you aren't religious, pick one and start praying. Grading is extremely strict; you'll spend countless late nights on essays only to receive disappointing scores. Dr. Morse is nice, but the course content is relentless.
