interesting course
don't explain well, make stuff more confusing than it is, rude to students
Boring.
he knows his stuff well...but he's not a good teacher. he doesn't answer any questions about assignment before it due.
this guy should tape himself and sell the tape to people who can't sleep. He'll make a fortune!!!!!!

good teacher, very interesting assignments, challenging questions. great course.
I love the way he moves and walks around in class -- he is so sexy. If he were a girl I would definitely want to date him.
this guy sucks! misses stuff that the course is suppose to offer, and his attitude stinks!
He tried to shoot me with his laser pointer in class. Plus, I saw him eating teriyaki in the cafe, somehow I think that is pretty funny. *smile*
Very interesting lectures. He cares abuts students and is very enthusiastic. Wish all the profs were as good as him.
Tough course, but good.

Helpful instructor questions to benefit students. The exams were all fair. But try to understand the concept not just memorize the formulas since he will word the questions differently in the exams.
Tough course. Believe it or not this is a math prof that actually has inflection in his voice and can actually make students interested. The best calculus prof I have encountered so far
Dont print out his notes, waste of money, time, paper, ink.y?he takes the things out of the book.exams are and fair, best prt is he scales alot! around 60sumthing% is an A- or B. intructor questions are very helpful for tests.Loncapa is doable=). In lectures he enjoys talking in depth about how mathematics apply to the world we live in!
Nice professor but quite hard.
Fair class, but with lots of work. 322 has same material as MATH 254 with an added layer of rigor, so you'll be already done a good deal of the course if you've taken 254. As expected from any course of analysis (the study of being anal ;) ) Muraki is very strict about the fine print of theorems.
This can be an extremely hard course, especially if you're not in mathematics. However, if you put the time in to understand the concepts, it will be very rewarding. However Muraki goes very fast and if you fall behind you have almost no hope of catching up. This is my second course with Muraki and he is still one of my favourite math profs.
Great prof!
It is a very difficult course but the stuff you learn is worth it! Assignments were fair, exams were difficult but the grading was ok.
The 1st midterm was very hard but the second one and final exam were easy. If you go over his assignment, you would get at least B.
It's really difficult to hear his voice in class and the lecture notes are not really useful.Better to focus on textbook samples. This professor needs you fully and clearly understand each chapter and midterms are hard and long, final is ok and overall grade is acceptable
It's very difficult to hear what professor says in lectures and the lecture notes are not really helpful, better focus on textbook. Professor require you fully clearly understand each topics. Midterms are extremely long and not possible to finish, average is very low. But final is okay and final grade is acceptable.
weekly quiz very hard. weekly coding and report even harder. only one word, HARD. Avoid at all cost
WEEKLY CODING PRACTICE IS PAINFUL! HAVE TO SPEND AT LEAST 1015 HOURS EVERY WEEK TO FINISH HIS ASSIGNMENTS WHICH ONLY HAVE LESS THAN 10 % FOR OVERALL, ANYWAY, IF YOU DO NOT OBTAIN A GOOD GRADE IN ASSIGNMENT (70%?), YOU WILL FAIL EVEN YOU ACE ON THE FINAL. ASSIGNMENTS ARE TOTALLY IRRELEVANT. PLEASE AVOID THIS PROF AT ALL COSTS.
Do not take a course with this man, lectures are unhelpful, you will need to read a lot, assignments are regular
DO WHATEVER CAN TO AVOID THIS ONE!!!! This course opens every term,if you do not need to graduate soon as me, don't take it. Why? Stupid every week coding homework, hard and ambiguous. Need to spend 5 hours at least on it every week, and there are computing questions and weekly quiz. If you really want to ruin your life, you can try.
This prof is a real disaster. I agree with prev. posts. I have spoken with my friends, who took this course before: it should be one of the most interesting courses. But unfortunately it is not. Avoid this "Prof" is possible.
Do not take this class with this prof. The coding assignments are very time consuming and are not worth much of the grade and grading scheme is unfair. You fail if you can't get 2*N-4 marks for N coding assignments. Coding assign+hw+quiz per week. Notes are fill in the blank in class, easy to miss some parts.
Even if you have to take a semester off to avoid this course, take it but don't even consider taking a class with this prof. Lectures are not at all relevant to subject he will test you on. his grading scheme remains a myth and weekly quiz and coding assignments are BRUTAL.
LONG weekly coding assignments worth almost nothing. Lectures and coding assignments seem disconnected from testable content and quizzes. Brutally hard quizzes for the time limit. Won't release averages. Lectures go WAY to in depth about the intricacies of the different formulas etc you learn without even explaining what they are in the first place
this prof don't know how to teach mac 316, the lecture is not helpful at all, also , you need to do weekly matlab assignments, which is not relevant to this course, you are not allowed to bring the cheating sheet , so image that you have to remember a lot of complicated formulas. avoid him!!! no zuo no die if you want try!!
worst prof in SFU! Never take MACM316 with this prof. For non-CMPT students, NEVER take this course if you have no coding background!!!
I am in fourth year and I thought I had taken many the difficult professors, but this prof is impossible. You will have exponentially difficult weekly quizzes, unrelated long weekly MATLAB problems. These are worth 1% and I swear, it takes 9+ hours to complete. He said instead of giving a few mins on the midterm, he will add extra questions.
Macm is one of the subjects that can become infinitely hard if the professor decides to make it so, and he certainly does so. Towards the end of the class I felt that he has personal feelings against our class and made things deliberately difficult and frustrating. Avoid unless you want to get cancer.
In math, you're supposed to learn through solving examples. This guy just gives us a bunch of formulas and derivations without any explanation as to how to use them in solving problems. Then he EXPECTS you to be able to solve the problems in the homework. By the way, the homework is ambiguous and takes HOURS to do and the quizzes are way too long.
AVOID THIS PROFESSOR AT ALL COST, HE WILL MAKE YOU LIFE HELL. Not only are his lectures and weekly Matlab assignments that takes 10+ hours to do, but his quizzes and exams will also destroy your anus. With minimal time and a ton of questions (did I mention no cheat sheet?), most students won't finish his exams.
AVOID! Worst professor. His notes are worst than reading the text book and his class example consist of matlab code which is irrelevant. Don't waste your money and time and wait for another prof. He isn't helpful when approached and only wants to make this class hell for all students even as a MATH major this class is ridiculously useless with him
If possible avoid this professor, especially for MACM 316. Every week, we need to complete a Matlab assignment worth almost nothing, but a requirement to pass. He focusses on teaching mainly how to use Matlab and briefly covers the proof. ZERO examples of applying these methods as it is up to the student to figure it out. AVOID. AVOID. AVOID.
I wasn't going to write a review until I read the previous review. I agree that this professor does indeed know the material inside out, but he is obviously incapable of teaching. To the degenerate student criticizing other students for not working hard enough, it's not that we don't work hard, it's because we have a life outside of math.
This professor needs to re-evaluate how he teaches. He is horrible at explaining things and believe everyone in the class is following. No one is! That is why no asks questions in class. Talks about theories but never backs them up with mathematical examples. His lectures are useless and boring with theory after theory. Please avoid him!
This is the most difficult class I've taken at SFU. The assignments are hard (takes 10+ hours to finish), the quizzes are hard, and the exams are unbelievably hard. Most of the time I'm trying to figure out what the prof is writing. It's written in black text and he fills in the blanks with black text. Lectures are useless, tutorials are useful.
This course is meant to present problems commonly arising in numerical analysis and scientific computing and the BASIC methods for their solutions. This dude made the course topics unnecessarily complicated and convoluted. He seemed to have forgotten that he wasn't teaching math graduates and made us rely on his TA's to learn the material.
Weekly coding assignments are painful, quizzes are difficult, midterms are not designed to be finished.
You basically need a phD in order to understand the course material. If you are a CMPT major, I HIGHLY recommend avoiding him. Course is composed of WEEKLY MANDATORY MATLAB assignments that MUST be completed in order to be able to write the final exam. Assignments are absolutely brutal. He makes a 3 credit course feel like 5+. Avoid if you can.
Let me put things into perspective for you: - Weekly required MATLAB assignments (worth 1% each), must obtain a passing grade on them to be eligible to write the final. Each take upwards of 10 hours given you have a natural aptitude for maths - Ridiculously long midterm and an incredibly hard final - Major restrictions on cheat sheet
There is not justification to the workload he demands from his students. MATLAB assignments are literally a slap in the face considering how little they are worth and how long they take to complete. Avoid at all costs if possible. I can attest to each and every negative review posted thus far. Extremely difficult exams. Key word: extreme
Excellent professor! MUST TAKE MACM 316 with him! Garunteed A+, free assignments, midterm marks. A lot of help from TA AND HIM. I am just kidding.
He does not teach you how to solve problems! Hes lecture is useless, if u want to pass the course, u need to read the text for whole semester! avoid at all cost.
Tests are tough. They are not designed to be finished as he states. We also have to write papers and coding assignments that are essential to passing to course, where each assignment is worth less than 1%. They take 10+ hours. He compares us with previous sems about the fairness of exams. We get 20 eqs, prev sems - full cheat sheets. Worst prof.
Everyone should take all the comments below with a grain of salt. I'm in CS and Math isn't my strongest subject. It's true he doesn't show us examples in class, but he does reference the sub-chapters we're responsible for knowing. He gives us assignments and quizzes with solutions and if you just study from that, you'll do fine since he scales
He's one of the most enthusiastic and engaging instructors on campus, at a math course no less. Not much proof or analysis is needed as a prereq (but recommended), and the midterms and final questions are all very standard and from the textbook.
I'm satisfied with my grade, still wasn't a good experience. Workload much higher compared to prev offerings with other profs. Assignments are long, tedious, and somewhat ambiguous (even for top students I've talked to). Lectures just sit+listen, might as well been online. True it's scaled, you'll likely turn out ok, but it's unnecessary stress.
okay prof. Assignments took time and were not easy. Exams are fair if you study hard.
Challenging class.. -Find a study group to work with! If you don't communicate with others, you will get overwhelmed by the homework. -Adopt his point of view. You must learn to think like him and understand what he expects from you on the homework to do well. Other than that he is a great lecturer but can be a bit stubborn at times.
Far better at teaching pure math than he is at teaching numerical analysis.
Awful lectures. Extremely hard exams. Averages on the midterms were like 30% on the first and then 50% for the second. Would not recommend. I know quite a few people who dropped this class specifically becuase of this prof. I wish I could have done the same. There are better within the department. Calc 3 is hard enough already. you dont need this.
When take his course. Remind urself:do u wanna lower ur GPA, if yes then take it. He thinks his lecture was funny, um..... not really. His lecture doesn't help u know how to do questions on midterms and final. Usually his test r really trick. Get familiar with homework r not enough. Any teacher is better than him, for ur GPA trust me.
He is an outstanding professor. Certainly he is not easy, but if you want to learn a whole lot of interesting things, he is your man.
Worst experience in my undergrad career. He's assignments are long , tedious and NOT ENOUGH for preparing exams. He's tests are not designed to be finished in time. He gives no example in lecture, yet no textbook. Take he's class as your elective if you feel your current classes aren't challenging enough.
He cares about students and it seems like he puts a lot of effort into teaching . He doesn't make things easy; expect long homeworks. Take his course if you want to really learn math.
He posts solution videos that explain and walk through solutions, and he lectures well... but wait, there is more. His assignments are hard to understand. He only gives high-level help during office hours, and will leave you making mistakes. He gets frustrated easily if you do not "get it" quickly. Not the worst, but there are better.
cuts his office hour short without explaining- that says a lot
Majoring in Honours Pure Mathematics. Muraki has no understanding of the material, evident in lectures, notes, discussions in office hours, and homework assignments. Disrespectful, confrontational, egotistical, most likely a result of his inferiority complex as being applied "mathematician". Do SFU a favour and quit. You are a disgrace to Math.
Extremely disrespectful and egotistical. He acts more or less like a condescending highschool teacher. Questions during office hours degrades into discussing his "philosophy". Lectures have no theoretical foundations and are disjoint from the homework, which is ambiguous and mathatically dubious at best. His incompetence is painfully apparent.
Had him for 251 also, and was able to achieve an A+ on both occasions. I don't like his notes, so I make my own (something the spoon fed babies below should do). Others are too harsh; HW and exams were excellent tests (but confusingly worded). I agree with the critics that he does have an ego; idk if this is justified, I have not seen his research.
He lectures ok and appears to care about students. However during office hours he is disrespectful and will criticize your abilities instead of helping you with your question. He will not correct you when you make mistakes. The exams are tough and ambiguous and he will scale a lot. Avoid if you can.
If you've struggled with math classes before do not take this prof. He will not tolerate questions covered weeks ago, or from previous classes. If you want to learn, and engage with math at a level unlike other profs, take him.
Awful, and very rude. Tried to make lectures relatable and funny but its not. His lectures are un-informative and exams are unreasonably hard.
Exams are extremely difficult. Notes are hard to read. No filled note after class.
Exams are extremely hard and he uses ambiguous words. Assignments are tedious and he doesnt scale a lot. The average for the class is C. Lowest avg ever! for my other math classes they are all B-.
First midterm was hard, but if you studied and did HW you would be able to get a good mark. Second was ok. Final was difficult. He isnt rude, willing to sit you down and go through a problem if you have the notes/understanding of the question. He just is quite honest and will roast you. I recommend doing bonus questions(were on all quizzes/tests)
Decent lecturer, I did end up learning pretty well from him. He seems pretty passionate about what he does. However, he is very rude, does not appreciate being questioned at all, didnt encourage questions as he made you feel terrible if you said something wrong. Hes ok, but if you can avoid, dont take it with him
His teach skills are not too bad. But he is absolutely a terrible person. He never replies your email. The suggestion he gives to you is something like "you should drop the class". He forces students to go his lectures in some ways. Not a respectable prof.
WORST prof I have EVER met in my LIFE!!! Quiz and exams are so hard and time consuming that you won't be able to finish it. Assignments are marked extremely strict. The exams and assignments are WAAAAAAAY harder than other profs. If you are not a genius in MATH, then avoid him at ALL COST! Save your money and spend it on more meaningful things.
AVOID!AVOID!AVOID!
Accessible outside class. He would give you a one on one pep talk if you are having a rough time in class. Weekly quizzes and assignments, yada yada, a typical math course. Study hard, go to tutorials and computing workshop, make friends.
Useless lecture, difficult assignments. DO NOT take him.
this guy doesn't post lecture notes or solutions to his sample problems and the homework is mandatory and you dont learn much from it. This class should be taught in a different way. like at very least upload solutions to your sample midterms like holy crap man
Lectures are always very clear with lots of examples and I like the way the prof teaches, but the exams are way too long to finish in the time given so you kinda just have to shoot for those part marks. Also, exam averages and standard deviations are not given so its hard to know where you stand. All together good though!
I emailed him 6 times throughout the term and only got 1 reply. Even when I asked about setting up a meeting I never got a response. He didn't even show up for online office hours. Lectures consist of few examples and largely him just rambling. The midterms were way too long and no time to finish, but the final was fair. He does not care about you
Muraki is a kind enough professor but was never able to actually teach me anything in lectures because of his convoluted and hard to read notes, and because he presented the material in a way that doesn't help us on homework or exams. The textbook is the only thing that got me through calculus 3. Unfortunately, he also rarely responds to emails.
Overall, I enjoyed his lectures. Notes were hard to read but he explained things pretty clearly (as compared to my calc 1 and 2 profs, who both had heavy accents). Both midterms were long and difficult, but the final seemed fair. He's a nice person and seems to care about his students but can respond to emails in a rude fashion.
David does not post his completed lecture notes so if you don't go to class you're going to need to ask someone for the notes. The lectures themselves are good. His exams are pretty tough, there are a lot of questions and not enough time to do them. He is around for help in person during office hours however he will be brutally honest with you.
Never choose his course. His homework is disgusting. And his lecture cannot provide enough information to do his homework. He trys to make some bad jokes, but no one cares. The words he use art ambiguous.
I would've given him a 3 or 4 if he posted his notes online. You're kind of screwed if you miss too many of his lectures so don't skip. He also seems to have a bit of an ego and is sometimes rude to students.
lectures are fine no problems, hw can be long and difficult at times(hw is guided with steps), tests are long and will really push you
I had him back in 2008 for calc3. I would say his knowledge of math is abundant and transparent during lectures but doesn't really teach u how to do problems. Lucky the textbook was good and there's google. His exams were lengthy with artsy wording but he does scale a lot. I stopped going to lecture after one month and just rely on textbook
Fluid dynamics is David's bread and butter. He cares for students and ensures they understand the topics.
Good lecturer and tries explaining things in natural language instead of always using the straight textbook definition. Assignments were challenging but pretty similar to exams. Midterm was way too long for the given time (IMO), but the final was more fair. Gives optional quick pre-lecture exercises for bonus marks. Also accessible outside class.
The lectures can be hit or miss, but the textbook is solid. Exams are challenging, with not enough time to complete them. Using unstuck study and past practice materials really helped me stay on top of the content. Overall, a tough but manageable class if you put in the work.
