He's really dorky, but the class was alright and the exams were fair.
He's your classic computer nerd, but he's really easy to understand and the class is very easy.
He's a good teacher. He sticks to the plan and is completely fair about everything. If you have to take this course definately get this professor!
He takes attendance every once a while without students knowing it. And it counts toward final grade for the class.
is the classic computer geek. i was nervous about him taking attendance every now and then because it counts so i just left early often. the t.a. knew very little about computers though but looked good
Don't need to go to class at all with this guy. Just need to attend his Exam Review in which he gives you whatever you need to know for the exam.
Kind of a computer nerd, but real nice guy, helps you if you need it, but you really don't in this class. Extremely easy, all notes are online, and tests are based off of notes. Don't bother buying the book!!! Its 100 bucks and I didnt open it once and got an A.
some what of an easy class if you know anything about computers, didn't buy the book but some might need it. labs are crazy easy.
Pretty good, I Love not having to go to class. Tests are easy if you study a little and watch the videos. He is also pretty interesting.
Great guy.
easy class. only thing i did not like was how he takes attendence, which counts, randomly.
He's a great teacher, and the course is super easy. The random attendance grades kinda suck, but the material is easy, and the tests are easy too. Print off all the notes and take them to class, and I would recommend not even buying the textbook - I got an A, and I didn't open the book once. And, you drop your worst test, so you can skip the final.
Class sucks, its amazing how pointless this 4 credit class is, (compares with mgq 201's irrelevant material) also the hw takes some time and its about nothing.
Great teacher. Loves what he does and is incredibly helpful if you go talk to him. Class itself is a little boring, but you will actually use this material in the real world, so it isn't all bad.
Great teacher, very nice (except for when people leave his class early without telling him) and the class is easy. You dont really need to buy the book fi you dont want to, its just helpful with in class excercises (which are soooo easy).
Easy class/material
Class is lame. I thought the exams were kind of unfair compared to other classes for the amount of time I put in studying. Still an easy A or B if you have a clue.
The lectures are extremely boring and most of the material for the exams are theoretical which sucks. I spent hours studying for it and still am doing bad on the exams. The only plus side is that he is really nice, but class still sucks regardless
I thought the class was pretty easy. Many of the tests he tells you the main points. He also drops one exam. The final project isnt hard either. Also he changes the grading scale depending on the class averages.
This class is easy, I have no idea what these other people are talking about, he's also super nice
He's the best professor I've had in ub. very very helpful, really nice. should take this class if u have the chance. Exams based on notes. tells you what's important. HW takes time but extremely easy. GET A GOOD GROUP for the project. Start your hw early cuz u never know how much time you'll need for it.other than that, Enjoy. can be an easy A
The class is quite alot of work compared to others. You have 5 long homework assignments, and one group project. They are all quite time consuming. The worst are the exams though, you have 3, and they are all pretty tough. Alot of memorization and nitpicking facts. If you can remember abbriavtions and computer code you will probably love this class
The exams range from useless trivia (such as "what prominent computer security hazard occurred in 1987?") to gotcha questions designed to validate the professor's ego as an instructor, asking things like "What did I say about my wife in lecture 4?" to make sure you are watching lectures. You learn a bit from the homework, the rest is just noise.
A very nice teacher. I went to class a lot just because it's a very long lecture to have to sit and watch on the comp..and you have to take very good notes. HWs took FOREVER sometimes so start early. Tests weren't too bad, but they weren't necessarily easy. Group project wasn't that bad either..i got a B+ but had to work hard for it
My favorite professor at UB!! I enjoyed watching the lectures. I LEARNED SO MUCH. The tests are a little difficult but if you watch the lectures and take notes, the exam seems almost easy. Plus he is a SUPER NICE teacher that is extremely helpful. Make sure to start your HW's and project early. With a fair amount of work, an A is easily attainable
Not too hard. Homeworks can take a while but are listed step by step in the workbook. Test were easy you can probably get away with an A or B just cramming the night before
He is okay in his teaching but his exams are more advanced then his teaching skills. He has to realize that. Other then that, he is really nice. Do not TAKE TA as Sara Macie. NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER !
Murray is the best. Such a nice guy, also very helpful. He had to deal with a copy of the test getting passed around and still stayed cool. I would take another class with him in an instant; however, the Access material in this class was hard. I hate how ub combines microsoft office clases with other material.
Great guy, great teacher. The best in the MSS department hands down
Murray's a really nice guy, however his class grading scale is way too hard to receive a better than average grade in. It's almost impossible to receive anywhere near an A or A- if you lose even 10-15 points in the class. Also, like someone mentioned below, DO NOT CHOOSE SARAH MACIE AS YOUR T.A. She constantly whines and grades much you harder.
Professor Murray is extremely nice and super helpful. His tests weren't too bad. Make sure to use the review sheets! I disagree that Sara Macie is a terrible TA. She was very helpful to me in her office hours and helped me with all my homework issues. She even gave me an extension once when I was having computer issues!
Great professor, very helpful. Its an online course, with a weekly recitation taught by one of several TA's. Tests aren't bad, he puts up practice questions on UBLearns which are extremely close to the real test. One semester-long project, hope for a good team and it should be easy to get at least a B.
No doubt this guy knnows a lot about computers, but nothing about teaching a class or writing exams. All questions are vague, scattered, and poorly phrased. Not to mention his useless TA's (mine at least). A huge waste of a 4 credit class. Too bad, because I was genuinely interested in the material.
I completely agree. He knows what he is talking about but he is an AWFUL teacher. I too was interested in this material too prior to the start of the class but now i genuinely hate this material with a passion. Unfortunately like everything in the SOM this class it's mandatory, it's online and there is only one professor.
If you are not interested in the class you will do poorly unless you are smart to begin with. Average students may struggle with the class. 5 homeworks that are due. they are graded on how well you do they. I never received a grade above an 80% on the hw. takes questions from practice tests and rewords them to give you different answers
This is a difficult class, no doubt about that but Professor Murray is always there to help! He is a wonderful teacher and really cares about his students. If he was not the prof of this class I would have been miserable! One of my fav profs!!!
Class wasn't particularly difficult but instructors would take away points any chance they could in a class where you could make few mistakes. Tests could be tricky. Never choose Sara Macie as a TA, she won't help you and grades you extremely hard on your homework and final project, STAY AWAY
Tests are somewhat difficult. Make sure you write down everything in lectures including his analogies. The project is a pain but not difficult. Class material is not the most interesting but he is passionate about what he teaches.
Passionate and knowledgeable about his course material, but the course is kind of a pain. The project is time consuming as are the Access homeworks. Tests are a little bit tricky too, like Ray O make sure you watch the lecture since he asks questions about it.
He was knowledgeable about the subject, but was boring in his presentations. The lectures were tough to watch, but if you watched them it is an easy A. The tests are relatively easy, and the homework's and group projects are really easy. Study a day before the test, and complete the homeworks and group project and it is an easy A.
Lectures are too long and boring. But you have to pay attention because he asks specific stuff from the examples he mentions. Make notes, do access hw and practice his sample test and you will get an A- for sure.
Professor Murray is a great professor. The lectures are quite boring and are painful to sit through sometimes. Pay attention to the lecture because he will use random examples and put them in the tests. If you do the work and watch the lectures it's easy to get an A
Great professor. Pay attention to the lectures or you can't get top grades on the test. Show up to all your labs, pay attention, do the work and give the project your best and I don't see how you can get below a B.
Great professor, just sucked that the class was at 8 in the morning. He explains everything in class and on his slides so you don't need to buy the textbook. In class exercises are more opinion based so they're easy points. Just attend class so you'll get those free points and just study the lecture slides and you'll do fine.
I really liked his class. He was always friendly and helpful at office hours. He posts exam outlines that help narrow the topics to study. He will also use examples he only said in class. Homework is fairly easy. The project is time consuming but applicable to the business world. Grading scale makes it difficult to get an A, but definitely doable!
What a great guy Professor Murray is. Extremely helpful and pleasant. Exams are a little tricky, but practice exams are a huge help. HW's do not take as long as others say. There are tons of hints to help you out. Project is easy too. I got good grades and I'm not a computer person.
Professor Murray was fantastic. While he definitely makes you earn your grade, he is very fair, and he makes a very boring topic seem interesting. In addition, he is a very nice guy and was extremely helpful if you needed anything.
Murray is a great professor, his exams are all based on his examples in lecture and slides. Lectures are 1.5 to 2.5 hours long but only once a week. He'll answer any questions for you and responds to emails very quickly. The group project can be a pain because your group members are random so pray that you get an MIS major.
Fantastic teacher, but I felt the workload wasn't typical for an "Intro" class. Project should be weighted much more in the grading rubric. Was a lot of work, especially if you have teammates that arent tech savvy.. Exams are fair. Would take Professor Murray again.
I took CSE 115 a computer programming class which was much easier than this class. Very tough for an intro to MGS.
The best professor you will ever have. If I wasn't so far in my program I would switch to MIS.
Huge group project that takes most of the semester. Homework every once or so, but a good experience overall.
This course is awesome and Dave is a great professor. It's a must take for management students who are looking to get into info-sec or fraud. It covers technical and non-technical topics and is presented in a way that's easy for students to understand. He brings in a ton of industry mentors who are great for asking questions and making contacts.
Suggestion, If you can choice other's professor, just go, do not choice him. This professor always gives some weird examples on the lectures and he really tests them on exams. You never imagine what questions he will put on the exam.
Amazing professor. Dont listen to anyone else who says he's not. He loves this topic and you'll do well i guarantee you if you sit down and watch his lectures. If you skip through them and dont pay attention good luck passing. WATCH LECTURES he tells you test questions! and also his office hours are super helpful. Do the practice tests theyre good.
Okay, everyone who says the tests are hard did not watch lectures. Test questions are straight from his reviews and refer to specific examples he mentions in lecture. If you just watch the lectures you'll be fine. Some of the homeworks are hard but if you don't wait until the last minute, him or your TA are totally willing to help you out.
There were four, non-cumulative exams. Honestly, they're easy if you pay attention to his lectures. DO NOT wait until last minute to do homework because it will ruin your grade (as it did with me). Recitation attendance is mandatory, but you don't really do anything. Project is straightforward - make sure you participate - group members asses you.
He makes the class interesting with guest lectures, Complete overview and practical approach was given.
hardest course for people who dont know anything about computer (me..... great professor tho
Attendance wasn't mandatory because it was a digital access class. Very nice guy and loved him as a professor. It's just the material and the almost 3 hour lecture that makes it hard to retain the material. The group project is also decent. You are given the entire semester to work on it in recitation.
Was actually one of my favorite classes. Professor is great and gives excellent examples to help you learn the material. Lecture's are 3 hours long and online but I went and they were very interesting. One of the few classes I can actually say I learned A LOT in. Group project takes awhile so make sure to start it early. Tests are pretty easy.
I took this over summer, which was rough--I do not recommend it if you can avoid it. Lectures always went the entire time. Weekly homework based in Access which generally took a few hours. Group project: not hard at all, but pray you get a group that feels like contributing. You can't half-ass it. 3 tests cover a lot of material, not hard.
The material isn't necessarily difficult but a different type of material than I am used to. Went in not knowing anything about computers but it was manageable. The homeworks are easy, just take time(busy work). Group project was a good experience for my group. Do well on the project and homework and you'll have plenty of leeway on the tests.
This class will require a lot of time and effort to get an A, just saying. The group project lasts the whole semester and isn't too bad if you work together and meet maybe once or twice a week. The homework takes a couple hours but the TA's give hints. The exams (3) each have 65 MC Q's which aren't too bad if you study a lot and take detailed notes
Great class, im in MIS so it wasn't too bad cause I have a background in using MA and coding HTMl, unlike some of my peers. Group project in recitation that is going to last the whole semester, so make sure to pick something that has a little bit of depth so you can jazz it up a lil for extra credit, tests are easy if you follow slides and lecture
Many guest lectures to understand the subject from various viewpoints
I went in to this class really nervous since I am not tech savvy at all! But this became my favorite class of the semester simple because of Professor Murry's lecture. Its a digital access class, but I recommend to go to class just to get to know David. Pay attention to lectures, do the homework, go to him for help, and you'll do fine.
Three exams and group project makeup around 2/3 of your grade. Exams aren't crazy difficult if you do the practice exam and watch lecture. Group project is graded pretty easily if you do all the work (it is a good amount of work). Overall easy professor to watch and not get bored. Definitely a class you can get an A in if you put the effort in.
I took this class because it was required for Accounting majors and I don't understand why it is. The class is very heavily slanted toward being a technology class, with the occasional use of Microsoft Access. Group project is tedious, but manageable. Study the practice exams, his slides, and take notes on random things he says because he tests it.
Great class. Lots of guest lecturers. Work load is very manageable. Would take again.
This class is for those who don't know basic programming or what HTML/CSS is. My biggest criticism is he teaches you some really bad industry practices! VBA is useless outside of Microsoft Products and I despise required recitation. The PHP stuff is useful but you can learn that on Codecademy (which he uses). Don't buy textbook, google it! save $$$
In order to get an A, you have to pay attention to everything he mentions in his lecture. His opinion and slides that you dont think is that important will come up in the exam, for example, a quotation on a slide. If you watch lectures again you will know every on the exam is on the lectures. So please take good notes!
This class is required for students in UB SOM. It is time consuming and tedious. Watch the lectures very carefully and store the things he tests on in your short term memorya lot of what is tested on is not actionable information. The group project is a good opportunity for real world problem solving Pray that you get a good group though.
Prof Murray was great! Exams are very fair if you study a normal amount. Homeworks are easy but time-consuming. The group-project is easy but kinda annoying. Recitation is mandatory but very short. Microsoft access is used throughout the course so be ready to learn that (it doesn't work on mac). Overall not a bad course.
Good professor. Tests are heavily weighted, so study!!!
Great, great professor. You'll need to put time into studying but Murray makes the material very clear. And it is a four credit class after all.
His exams are heavy lecture based. Just make sure to watch the lectures before exam. There is a group project involved, but it's relatively easy because it's based of homework. There is homework once a week. Make sure to give yourself time for this. DO the HOMEWORK! He DOES NOT TAKE LATE ASSIGNMENTS.
One of the best professors I've ever had. He gives you the textbook (which he wrote) and in that there's only like 2 pages of actual reading and then the rest of the chapter is just the guided homework, really not hard to follow at all. Take good notes because all of the exam material is in the lectures!!
One of the best professors I've had at UB. You can tell he is really passionate about what he teaches. The material is challenging at times but still worth taking if you have Murray.
He's passionate about what he teaches. A lot people said his class is tedious due to the coursework (learning MS Access from scratch) but if you're into technology as much as he does, it does not feel tedious at all. Approachable outside class, funny guy, and probably one of the best profs in school of management.
He's a really good professor. If you stay up on lectures and study the material, you'll do fine, not a very hard class. Don't expect to binge all the lectures though and do well. Be careful as he will pull small things out of lecture on the exam. Take the practice exams, the questions are very similar to the actual exam.
If you can get another teacher, This is his first year with a new classwork program and theres so many issues students have. I get half credits on many homework because of glitches and it makes mistakes that affect future homework grades too.
Professor Murray is really excellent. He's funny, engaging, understanding and clear. This course is not super easy especially because it's being updated right now, but Professor Murray teaches really well.
Class was easy, but the group project throughout the semester was a pain.
The material itself wasnt that hard, watch the lectures and you'll do fine on the exams. The group project ended up being a lot of work which could be annoying. His homeworks weren't all that helpful either but there's only 5 spread throughout the semester. He's a cool guy who will help you when needed but this class won't be fun for for everybody
This class as a whole is a MESS. It is the first year implementing Salesforce and no one knows what is going on including the TA's. Apparently no one was aware that the homeworks build on each other so don't mess up the first one and USE THE SAME PLAYGROUND. Murray is also very boring. The material seems easy but the exams are unnecessarily hard.
Murray is a very nice, funny professor- lectures are entertaining. Everything you need to know for the semester is laid out for you on the course website. Very accessible and willing to help students with any questions. As it is a 4-credit hour course, it is a lot of work. Budget your time for the homeworks and you'll do well.
He cares, and he makes himself available to students. Cant say that about them all. His TAs are pretty good. Smart from a business perspective.
Homework is done by read gulide text. No video walk though. Is super hard if you don't like coding!!! Mandatory group (random) project! Everything are done by MSACCESS and THrillhead
This class is a lot of work, but you do learn a lot. Do NOT skip out on anything, or you'll fall behind! Knowledge of the material is absolutely crucial!
Definitely the most time consuming course I have ever taken, but I learned more in this class than I have in any other class. I learned a lot of helpful information from both the lectures and the group project. If you put in the work and have a good group you will do well. The TA's are super helpful and made the course make more sense!
The class is mainly taught by TA's with hours of lectures posted by Murray. It's a tricky class with a lot of homework and big projects. Definitely, a class where you teach yourself. CS and MIS majors probably will excel in this class. However, Murray is easily accessible and is very invested in finding solutions to students' problems.
One of the best business professors! Always willing to help students and he is very accommodative. Really cares about what students think, because he actively seeks to improve the course. A textbook is used to learn Microsoft Access, but it's free and available on UB Learns. Everything about Professor Murray is excellent.
He is the best professor I have ever met. Professor Murray has outstanding teaching ability. He explains complex concepts in the most understandable way. At the same time, he tells students the reason to learn Access and Salesforce. He led me into the data industry, and teach me the foundation of data! Such a great Professor is hard to find!
Worst professor and course I have ever taken. Lectures are awful and tedious. Certain assignments and their due dates are not in the syllabus. The most unorganized and most useless course you will ever take, unless you are going in a field that requires higher technological knowledge. I feel bad for you if you have to take this course.
who the f uses access!
based project grading too much on peer review, group members were friendly with each other and were more lenient with their grading on each other and not other members.
The class sucks. It's the most annoying class in School of Management in my opinion. The professor is nice but the midterm was tough and the group projects were annoying. Access can be so difficult and case sensitive but once you get to Salesforce ur chillin. You only really need to walk lectures up until the midterm. Enjoy!
Murray seems to be a good dude but this class just isn't it. Access is clunky and aggravating to use, and it's like 75% of the class. The midterm is ridiculous and filled with random trivia tidbits, thankfully he curves it very generously. Overall, I wouldn't take again, and I think this course should only be required for MIS majors.
Professor Murray cared about the students, and gave us candies for Halloween. It is a clear clas taught by the TA.
Murray's class is a mixed bag - Access can be a headache, but his guidance and the unstuckstudy tools make it manageable. Midterm is tough, but he curves generously. Overall, not the easiest, but worthwhile if you put in the work.
Although David seems like a nice and understanding guy the class is a bit challenging especially if you have a mac book. The exams have a lot of random trivia that he does not review in class. Unless youre very into computers
Navigating Access is annoying especially since I'll most likely never use it again, but Professor Murray explains it well. He is very understanding and enjoys what he does. Pay attention during lecture and take notes and you'll do fine.
Nice guy but this class is so unnecessary if you're not a CS or MIS major. Why it's required for every business student I have no idea. Access is clunky and hard to learn, plus he gives you another project on a completely new platform (Salesforce) with 3 weeks left in the semester. Prof Murray and the TA's are great, but the class is not.
David is very passionate about his field however not all of us share the obsession. His homework could be confusing at times and the hints are even more confusing. I emailed a few times and was referred to a page range of 10 + pages . His test are over all fair game but he throws in a few curve ball questions such as what did i say in class .
Dave is a good guy but his class sucks. The Access and salesforce projects are headaches. The homeworks are long but manageable if you give yourself time throughout the week. Tests are what they are, but the main thing most people hate is the projects. The overall content of the course is boring too, but Murray has enthusiasm which helps I guess.
HW's are easy but tedious. (I was able to complete each HW within 4 hours but this was because I was tech savvy). The grade you get for HW/Projects vary depending on TA. Course is terrible. No one uses Access anymore. Salesforce I understand but half the semester learning salesforce is not enough. Rather have the entire semester learning salesforce
He's a nice guy and passionate avo
He's a passionate guy about the field. I just feel like the class is a bit dated. We spend majority of the semester on Microsoft Access but no one really uses it anymore. Need a non-mac for this class. 2 group projects and two tests. Tests can be hard, random information. Galyah is a great ta. Class needs an update and to just focus on salesforce
Decent professor, lectures were boring. I just read the textbook and was able to get an A on all exams , group project does count for a lot, though.
David Murray is fantastic. He's funny, extremely smart, and very helpful. The class is a bit of a dud if you're not interested in MIS. Access project isn't horrible, but the Salesforce portion sucks. Exams are hard but not impossible if you study enough.
life is a database!
He's a good dude. Class is not good. Waste of time using access, none of us will ever use this in the real world. Should be all Salesforce. Curved both tests 12% as class averages are typically in the low 60s. Throws random trivia on the quizzes
He's a nice man, but the class needs a total revamp. SOOOO much time on the homeworks that you never get feedback for other than the grade unless you go to office hours. tests that feel like a random trivia game even when you study. if you have to take it. its fine. just be prepared to get annoyed.
This class ended up actually being very easy. At first, you're going to seem lost but the ta's will walk you through everything. Get Galyah if you can! 2 tests, no final. 2 group projects, he picks the groups. I really liked the group projects met some good friends from it. We should just focus on Salesforce cause Access is outdated.
