Awesome. Very helpful and knows his stuff. Very responsive to student questions and problems. If you are in doubt or have a problem, then ask him. Also has done 261. Take him if you have a chance. One of the best TA's you can have.
David was by far the most knowledgeable and helpful T.A. I've had in any course. He also seemed genuinely interested in the subject matter. I would recommend him for sure.
one of my favorite ta's so far and would definitely take another course of his!
Extremely helpful. One of my favorite TA's out of my educational career thus far. Approachable, doesn't degrade me when I ask stupid questions(I'll admit sometimes they were) Gives great advice on conceptualizing ideas
This is my second course with him. Hes so helpful, and nice, and he makes all these resources available to students. You can tell he really wants you to succeed. If youre taking this class ever again with him, do the policy paper, hes a policy pro. :) great tA!
Great TA! He's helpful and approachable. If you have any questions regarding any of your assignments, he will try to answer your question and wishes you to get a good grade for the assignments.
One of the best TAs at SFU. Honestly, i think David is smarter than the prof. He is not an easier marker, but I managed to achieve a pretty good grade in his class. His comments written in my papers are very helpful. Highly Recommended.
I've taken CMNS 130 (Prof) and 230 (TA) with David and he is the best prof I have had at SFU thus far. Not only does he help students reach their potential in the course, but teaches with a passion and enthusiasm for the course material. David is extremely knowledgeable in the course material and is completely approachable.
You should be interested and the course content if you plan on taking this course. Otherwise, you might complain later if you were looking for an easy credit.
I believe this prof got a bad rap this round but this was partially due to an inexperienced TA. Newman is kind of old school in his ideas - for a first year class there is a lot more expected readings then any other class I have taken (up to 300level) Otherwise he truly wants you to achieve and will help you to succeed.
too much reading...
David was helpful, gave plenty of advice and useful information for both the midterm, final exam, and even non-course related subjects. If you did the readings the tutorials were overall enjoyable as you could follow along. The tutorials were mostly about class presentation on the weekly readings.
Watch out first years! Here comes a course filled with readings and boring lectures that nobdy wants to attend! I constantly dreaded going to this class... he always goes way over class time with movies and no breaks... ever!!!
Possibly the worst lectures I have been to in 2 years at SFU. You can barely understand what he is saying half the time. Take this class, its awesome...just not under David Newman.
I feel sorry for the Prof, people say a lot of bad stuff about the way he delivers the course but it's simply because there is so much material to cover that lectures constantly feel dry and lifeless. Newman himself is very nice and helpful and the TAs all seem to be pretty good although some are a lot harsher in marking than others.
Honestly, he's a nice guy, has genuine interest in the subject, and tries really hard to teach well. Unfortunately, he's way too long-winded and has trouble distinguishing between information we need to know, and information we don't need to know. This is the devil course they force you to take before you can take any of the other cmns courses.
I think that a lot of the negative comments here are because half of the people in lectures are on their laptops, not paying attention. I find it very easy to keep up with Newman and he clearly is very interested in what he does. He is approachable and his last assignment was really fun. It's not an easy A, but it's worth the effort!
Professor Newman is extremely knowledgable in communications. He is NOT intimidating at all and is extremely friendly and approachable for help. As long as you complete all of the assignments, this course should be an interesting experience as it covers many interesting topics regarding mass media. Very reasonable, shows great videos in lectures!
Newman is so helpful and understanding!! He is always willing to give extra help to students who need it. You can tell he is very dedicated to what he's teaching. Only cons are that the lectures always go over time, and there is way too much reading for this course.
One of the worst profs ever, our 2 hour lecture became 3 to watch a film, but we have other classes to attend. Then he says that we should not feel disadvantaged on the final when one of the question choices is about the films. Does not take negative feedback well and has a horrible attitude that suggests he think he's always right, which he's not.
He is nice and helpful but his final exam seems too difficult and doesn't really reflecting on what he has taught us throughout this course.
my experience entering the communications field is a great one, thanks to David. He?s more than accommodating & helpful to students who seek his assistance. His understanding and support was incomparable to any of my last 13 prof?s. lectures are rich in content yet it?s still an intro. course providing background knowledge of the field. His ove
My experience entering CMNS is amazing tnx to David. Extremely helpful to students who seek it, his understanding & support is unmatched to any previous Profs. Lectures are rich in interesting, controversial, & enlightening content w/ diverse assignments ensuring to intrigue students. I'll definitely take a course with David in the future.
So boring, can't understand a word this guy says. Easy class lots of reading and writing but easy. He literally DRONES on and on and on about nothing. Go to tutorials but no lectures he just repeats the textbook and none of the movies are on the exam dont buy th Mass Communication in Canada textbook you NEVER use it. Custom courseware is essential
This class involves a lot of reading and lots of essays, it helps if you have a good TA. Prof. Newman is really nice though and if you do have questions he welcomes them and he is very understanding! would take another class with him again!
Some of the ppl here are TAs for sure...
He is just amazing. His lectures were sometimes boring but still, they were mostly interesting, so I somehow attended every single class. It's not a hard class. However, it requires little readings and writings. You wouldn't have hard time doing this course. Highly recommanded!
David is an absolute gem. Very thoughtful, and genuinely LISTENS to what you have to say. Really refreshing, very organized. Great!
I had Newman as a prof and as a TA. Cmns130 was hard to get through because the students in it were disrespectful which didn't help Newman's already dry lectures. He is however, very knowledgeable. Come to class prepared to listen. I liked Newman much better as a TA. He is a very good mediator and prepared us for midterms etc without boring us.
his class is very interesting, he encourage everyoen in class to talk, every student larn something for sure after taking his course and i am the one
CMNS 354.This professor is amazing at both teaching students and helping them understand every single part of the topics. I was diagnosed with a disease and he was very understandable like no other and he taught me a lesson. His interest for the course is astonishing and he cares for the success of the students, his grading was very fair.
David is an awesome prof! He is very helpful. The material can get a bit dry but he always attempts to make it fun for the class. He is a hard marker, but if you do what he asks, you will receive a good mark! Overall a good course and a great prof!
Compared to CMNS 110, this course's load is way tougher and the readings are not as interesting. I disliked the course as it is really dry and writing-intensive. I just didn't like the way how the course was structured. At times, there were some good readings/lectures.
I like this professor a lot. CMNS 130 has dreadfully boring course material but he's done quite a good job making his lectures interesting and relevant. He's incredibly knowledgeable and fair in his tests. I would advise you to take notes on EVERYTHING he says and study the reading questions like mad, though.
Excellent prof for an introductory course - brought relevant experience and good insights to the table, not only towards the course material, but towards academic practice in general. Inspired me to move towards communications as a possible major - great prof in general.
Good Prof. Interesting material. 1/2 of the marking comes from team presentations. Seems like a lot of workload at first but it is actually fair. NO final in this class.
Great class, rather interesting though I thought that since it was a history class it wouldn't be. The simulation game played in class was insightful but since it was new, not everything went as planned. Assignments are easy enough. Usually available for help, I would say email is best.
great prof, loved the class. Highly recommend communication students to take this course with professor Newman. professor Newman is a very nice instructor , the activities were creative, and work load is fair, not too heavy but you will learn a lot.
David is a great professor! He makes his class really interesting and creative, and he really cares for his students. The best prof I ever had by so far! He is very helpful. The workload seemed like a lot at first, but it is actually not and also interesting and engaging. Presentations are super important. Definitely recommend him!
Dr. Newman sincerely cares for his students and is extremely helpful if you do not understand a concept. The custom courseware was two late, however he made sure that we were able to download the material on Canvas. The course is heavy in reading and the exams are not easy, but the Prof is great!
David made this class worth attending. He was very passionate about the content of this course, and was very knowledgable on all aspects of the cultural industries. This course is especially interesting if you're looking to one day be involved in the film industry.Class discussions were highly encouraged, and made the lectures more enjoyable.
David was very helpful throughout the course. He is compassionate, a good listener and wants his students to succeed. He loves to tell stories which are helpful in the real life but he misses time to explain concepts. Overall. Good prof.
David is definitely passionate about the material, unfortunately he struggles to relay the core information in an organized fashion. He puts together his presentations directly before class and often stumbles over slides unsure of their order or sometimes why they are even there. His lack of organization overshadows his passion for the material.
This course has potential to be incredibly interesting. The material is a bit dated and he is apprehensive to talk about social media as a cultural industry, which is disappointing. He is too disorganized and goes on unrelated tangents about himself. He has high expectations, but is not accountable himself, often giving grades back VERY late.
David is really a nice professor with good communication knowledge. The exams are not hard if you are hard working and understand what he talk about in class~
David is approachable and always provide feedbacks. He introduced us to Media Democracy Day events in which I was interested at.
Dave is a GREAT prof, though at some points can be a little dry he is extremely accommodating and very helpful. The class breakdown and exams are quite fair and there are plenty of opportunities to get good grades. go to lecture, ask questions and you'll be set. He's also real generous when it comes to marking papers/assignments.
David is amazing prof! I took 2 classes with him and would take more. He is extremely helpful. He will always do the best he can to help if you experience problems with the course or assignments. David always comes prepared and tries to make class interesting and engaging. His class isn't easy A, but come to lectures, ask for help and you're fine!
Although David's lectures are rather boring and he manages to relate everything to Peter Jackson and Lord of the Rings, he's an excellent prof who cares about the success of the students and will go out of his way to be helpful. He's great :)
David. What can I say. He is a very knowledgeable guy and he really does love Peter Jackson. Class set up is not overly difficult, but material can be somewhat dry, try and make the most of it and his Lord of the Rings love.
David is very passionate about the material. He often talks about unrelated topics about his personal career during lecture. The course content itself, was interesting but scattered. The readings are unrelated to lecture and dry, but are important for the midterm. He points out what parts of lecture will be in the tests. Lots of projects.
David is the most boring and uninteresting prof I have ever had. He is very dry, and not to mention... monotone.
David is an intelligent and considerate professor who I think is better suited to teaching upper division courses. I'm lucky enough to have had a chance to be taught by him at two different points in my undergrad degree, and while he was nothing but professional in both instances, his insights in the upper division were much more well received.
With David, you have freedom in attending his courses, in picking the recommended readings you prefer, and the liberty to be original in your paper(s) and your presentation(s). David is super helpful, encourages you throughout your project, and brings it to the next level; giving you the chance to publish it.
Newman is GREAT yet little bit boring. I like him, such a nice and gentle man.
A gentle person. I really enjoyed doing the tutorial presentations, it's a great way to absorb the material.
Lectures were very boring. Tutorial presentations were expected to be creative and powerpoint was not allowed, but the professor gave the same boring power point presentation over and over again. The midterm was quite difficult and material partly came from tutorial presentations (which gave students in some tutorials an advantage).
Very nice person, however his lectures are quite boring and his tutorials were never organized. Easy exam and fairly easy marker.
Shoot out to mah boy David Newman. Still doesn't know how to use a projector after years of teaching LOL. Cheesed this class with minimal effort. A bit reading and paper intensive, but TAs are nice. Defs recommend though!
I fell asleep often. Felt the course as a whole was a bit dry, with a few interesting lectures. Midterm was quite hard, but fair. Keep up with your readings, it'll save you A LOT of work before the exams. He is a good professor that is very helpful and approachable, so make sure you consult him if you are struggling with anything.
I found Newman very difficult to understand because he did not speak clear and he went through his slides quickly. There are also many assignments in this class including a presentation and three papers. Overall, there is a lot of content to take in and it gets confusing.
He has an accent which is hard to understand, and switches his slides very quickly, without getting the students to write everything down. Therefore, I would only recommend this class to someone who it is mandatory for.
Lots of readings and class isn't an easy A, but David is very nice and extremely helpful if you ask for it!
In his lectures he is very monotone which makes it really hard to pay attention, but the biggest issue was his lack of knowledge when it comes to technology. Usually it isn't a big deal, but literally every class there was some issue. One class we actually spent completely in the dark - i'm not kidding it was so dark no one could see there notes.
Extremely boring, and at times I thought he was speaking another language when he was muttering. He repeats himself and is extremely unorganized, his slides are terrible and he made us buy a useless inspirational book at the beginning of the term (dont get it just look it up). Lots of reading. Just not a well taught class.
David is a very pleasant and well read professor. He challenges you to up your game. There are a ton of readings, so be prepared to put in a lot of time because you are expected to do the required readings and pick others from your theoretical focus, which there are two throughout the entire course. Skimming the readings is not enough.
The lectureseminars are sooooo long and monotonous but when it comes to assignments he really helps everyone understand the fundamentals of academic research. He also gives you options for your semester project. He might mark harder than a lot of communications profs but you will come out his class a better student.
Only professors that awards marks for doing the readings. Good prof
I had him for CMNS 130 and 230, He barely had a criteria for the 130 term paper, AND HE HAS NO CRITERIA AT ALL FOR 230, not for the case study paper, not for the presentations, nothing, it seems as if all the grades are given arbitrarily, if you've never written a case study, good luck. Lectures are boring, readings are irrelevant and unnecessary.
Nice guy. Heavy reading load. Helps if you have a background in poli sci or econ. Rewards thinking and no just regurgitation
Okay so yes, he is a bit dry. The guy reads off of a tablet so give him a break. Here's the amazing thing, he KNOWS what he's talking about, he's ALWAYS there to help and he's not one of those awful profs who trick you in exams - midterms are super easy, my final is tomorrow. Take it with him, you'll learn a lot - just don't fall asleep in class:)
He is very passionate about the subject, though is not the best at instructing. For a 100 level course, I found it difficult to keep up with the standards of the class as he doesn't really define or answer what is expected. Heavy course load in regards to the many many readings. VERY MONOTONE and was just.. no. You've been warned.
Very helpful in many aspects. Very passionate and easy to understand as well. Big load of work but it is worth because the class is very interesting. I will take another class with him 100%.
David is a great professor, very dedicated and he gives good constructive feedback. May have needed a little more guidance on the project and perhaps less guests (would suggest on week on two) but overall, great opportunity for project management and I recommend it.
David gives a lot of chances to earn extra credit. He's lecture could be dry sometimes, but he has a great passion on the subject and he's always helpful if you ask him for help. The TAs are helpful also. Not a tough grader in general, there's a lot of readings, make sure you do them before the lecture. Will take he's class again.
Too much reading and a bit scattered
I had a really tough TA, otherwise i would have gotten a much higher grade. that being said, his lectures are very informative. it's just the content is really dry and boring. i barely read anything and listened in lecture and got a decent grade comparing to the effort i put into this class.
Expected this class to be worse than it was. That being said, David gives quite a bit of work - term paper, multiple assignments, a group project, midterm, and final. Know the material and the exams should be fairly easy. However, I found David's lectures painfully long and boring. I'm avoiding taking his classes in the future.
He was is a helpful instructor. Shows a lot of videos and not too much lecturing as much as discussion. Only annoying thing was that 5 weeks into the course is when we actually got an outline, that was ridiculous but he is a good guy and wants you to do well.
I would not encourage anyone to take a class with him. He is unclear about his expectations and has poor organizational skills in terms of the structure of his lectures and the overall course. His expectations are high and does not appear to understand that you're taking other classes. He also spends an ungodly amount of time talking about himself.
This is my second course with David Newman. After taking 130 with him, I basically felt hopeless. But I have really enjoyed 230 with him! Not only is the material more interesting, but David has a fair course structure. Would recommend.
Newman isn't a bad guy but I found his lectures incredibly boring. To give him some credit, it wasn't his fault that the content of the course was boring, but his way of speaking made it all the worse.
Lectures are a little long but very informative. The subject matter is a little dry but David does make it more interesting. Fair tests. Really helpful if you need assistance in understanding an assignment better. Be ready to write at least 500 words every week and complete all the readings. I would take another class with David.
I had David for both 230 and 235. He's incredibly disorganized. It took him weeks to get the course material up on Canvas, and he kept forgetting to submit the course pack to the bookstore so students could buy it. I would avoid taking classes with him if possible, unless you don't mind three hour lectures on his native New Zealand.
There was quite a lot of work to do in the class, but it was NOT HARD. The midterm was the easiest test I have taken so far in my undergrad, short answer and multiple choice, just have to study the lecture slides. Overall David made the class enjoyable. Assignments were straight forward. Take home final. And easy opportunity for extra credit.
This was one of the most (if not THE most) useful courses I've taken at SFU. David's lectures are informative yet entertaining, the group project taught me things that I can take with me to any place of employment, and he gave awesome feedback. Whether you're in publishing or not, I would recommend this course to anyone!
For work ethics, I recommend this course. It can give you a good protfolio to start your carreer. Creativity, lean approach, this is what the employers are looking for at the present time. It takes you away from dry theorical courses and David is a good reference to have.
Loooooong lectures with zero breaks, he tries his best to make things funny, but the material is dry enough as it is. His slides are mostly scattered pictures that are not at all helpful, readings are the only was you'll pass this class.
Donald was very into the course topics and always encouraged us to participate and discuss, he would often babble onto other relevant topics during lectures but they were pretty interesting stories! Because I took this course during summer, we were able to get real experience by going on a field trip. The material learned was very interesting.
His lecture is dry and unorganised, and he seems to be insecure about being disliked so he tries so hard to be liked. He would try to get students who seem to like him in this class to sign up for the next class. I suspect that bribing students with good grades is a way to attract students to the next class for him.
I've taken two courses with David now, and never will again. He's incredibly disorganized, to the point where half the time the materials were not on Canvas when they were supposed to be. We spent a lot of time sitting in lecture listening to him talk about Lord of the Rings, or New Zealand. Avoid him if you can, especially for lower divisions.
Professor David Newman is very smart. But, his lecture are often lengthy, boring disorganized and repetitive. I think he really needs to work on making the course more relevant and informed.
He's pretty nice but if I have to listen to him talk about how he failed his first year of uni again I'm going bungee jumping without the cord. Teaching wise he's pretty below average and I wouldn't expect good guidance from him on any assignment past the basic "oh you should write about this or add this". pretty chill dude tho
Professor Newman is a great teacher. However, he gives so much assignments and dont grade them in time. The TA was also very unresponsible and dont give us scores in time. In addition to the many assignments, he is really cheap in giving grades. Pretty sure its because in the previous years everyone got an A and now he just gives students <70
Professor David Newman gives so much assignments and the grading we receive is often late. He is a really tough grader and its hard to achieve anything above a 70 no matter how much effort you put into your paper. In the beginning of term, he stated that in the previous year everyone got an A and he received complaints, so that's explains why...
Horrible prof. Hes always talking about his UBC classes and always putting last minute effort to our class. Groups are supposed to switch 3-4 times (this is reflected in ALL 217 classes). We switched twice. Assignments are also made together for all sections yet ours was entirely different and instructions were so vague. AVOID AT ALL COSTS
Already a poor course to begin with. David makes the experience even worse. Lectures and assignments are thinly linked. Deadlines are quick, some assignments are due the very same day at the end of class. Marking is slow. He's very out of touch with students, asking him questions will get you long winded non-answers.
The worst experience I've had so far. Too many assignments, tight deadlines (2 hours after class? I'm taking other courses!), lectures and assignments are barely linked, instructions are unclear, grading is tough in a way where it's not about your learning but about finding things to lose you marks. Absolutely horrendous.
one word. terrible.
probably one of the worst profs i have ever had. never gives a clear outline of what is expected and spends classtime on irrelevant topics.
