Excellent prof. His explanations are crystal clear, all it takes is a paying a little attention in class. Will go out of his way to make sure everyone in class understands, and is extremely helpful outside of class. If you do what's required of you COMM308 is an easy A with him.
He makes the class interesting and his assignments helps better understantd the topics. He tries to answer students questions as much as possible through emails, first class and his office hours (didn't really make use of it though because of conflicted time). To take if you really want to learn.
not an easy class but tries to make as clear and Feasible as possible.Gotta open your book and study if you want to pass.In general he's one of the best
A great, passionate professor who shows a genuine interest in the success of his students and in the subject of finance as a whole. I had zero interest in the topic and a very poor record in math, but learned a ton from Mr. Newton and ended up with a good grade. Definitely a good choice.
This teacher is amazing! Young PhD student whose very driven in finance. He even goes beyond the material and gets into more detail about the subject matter. A must have prof for any Finance major. And if your not majoring in Finance, he definitely opens your eyes to change paths.
Dave stop posting your own reviews :) However i do agree with a lot of your posts. Dave is a great guy and good teacher
Although he is a nice guy, his topic is out of the requiements of course outline. Midterm is much harder than other sections'.
really awesome teacher, his lectures make the topic easy and fun (something i never thought i'd say about finance).
A fantastic guy! David is passionate, always willing to help, cool, and extremely knowledgeable. One of the best professor I've been with. Highly recommend! To get a good grade, you sure need to do your own work.
Great professor, gives crystal clear responses, whether it's finance or life or whatever he's talking about,he'll surely give u something to think of or a new piece of info. that u did not know. honest, funny,up to date, young, energetic, and most importantly..the guy delivers. u need to study cuz finance really builds up on itself. Dave surely helps!
One of the best Finance teachers. He prepares you really well for the Final exam. Even if you are a B student, and you pay attention you should be able to get at an A.
Well i gotta say..his class are really hard...he goes off to his jokes randomly n most importantly...his assignments and midterm are really killers! but the final is easier since it is common to all section otherwise...you'll be sure to get C's and pls dont take sos for this course...the tutor..unhelpful as well, goes over the material surface only
Good teacher, especially for finance majors.
Recommended for Fina students. Explanation on the theory is clear but attend the TA's tutorials to learn the computations and calculator. The common final is going to be much easier than his stuff so if u understand and do well on his agsmts and midterm, its a definite A+ for u!
Best teacher you can have for an intro class, ESPECIALLY for finance majors. He actually really cares about his students, always there to answer questions and help when necessary. Although the assignments and midterm are killer, he prepares you super well for the final exam since its a common exam. Would definitely take him again for another class!
The best choice for Finance course. Very nice and very helpful. The mid-term and final exams are very difficult, but overall Dave is the best teacher I ever had.I really enjoyed his course. All I want to say is Thank you David.
Disregard any negative comments about dave. This class is a tough course and he makes it as painless as possible. I HATE finance and i got a B , so he's clearly doing something right. He's a sweet man and loves to teach and has no intention of making your life harder. I can confidently say he's one of the best young teachers at concordia.
Very smart Professor, young and extremely knowledgeable. As a former student he understands our pressure and does his best to anwser all our qestions.Sorry for his wife:) it seems that he answers first class on the weekends and even on the train coming back from a wedding. I greatly recommend him, you would learn a lot about Finance. Enjoyed class.
Very hard professor, although he is very willing to help. Go see him during his office hours. Explanations in class are limited, good teacher for finance majors, not others
Great teacher. If you REALLY want to learn about finance, he's your guy. He makes everything very interesting. Overall one of the best teachers I ever had. I took him again for Fina 385.
He might ask for a little more than other teachers, but hes a great teacher and you actually learn things from him. He makes you understand things, rather than memorize them. I definitely recommend him.(I got an A in his class)
One of the best teachers. Very helpful, very enthusiastic and wants you to succeed. His class is tough, but you learn a lot more than other sections and he actually relates things to the real world. I 100% recommend you to take him, but i will warn you that you need to do a little more than memorize a few formula,he wants you to understand concepts
nice guy, not easy to get a high mark.
If you want to learn a lot and are willing to work hard, then take his class. He is a very good teacher, you learn a ton, he marks fairly easy, BUT his exams are really tough. the assignments aren't too bad, so its not that hard to get a 75%+. My advice to people taking his class: he makes you think, so LEARN things rather than memorize things.
Amazing teacher and person. But I'm not gonna sugar coat it, HARD midterm which he writes himself. Despite being in acco I DO NOT regret taking him for a second. HIS slides are amazing haven't opened the textbook once. FINA kids feel very prepared after taking him. Just a pleasure to have
Best teacher in Finance. He actually teaches you and makes you use your head. wish other teacher's could learn something from him.
Greatest teacher in the school. I learnt more about option from a small part of his class, than my options class. He understand how to teach and how to get kids to excel. You might find him hard, but he will prepare you so well for every other class in finance.
One of the best teachers at Concordia. His classes are hard, but it is worth the amount of knowledge you learn. He is one of the few teachers that can actually teach. TAKE HIM!
The best Teacher! He is a great teacher, has amazing power point slides, and makes the class very interesting. With some hard work you can easily get an A. He is also very helpful!
AWESOME TEACHER! His class is a little tougher than other sections, but it prepares you very well for the rest of your finance courses. It has made my life so much easier having him as a teacher.
Best teacher I've had. Be prepared for a difficult mid-term but he prepares you for the final and subsequent finance courses. His use of understandable analogies made the course material much easier. I can't say enough good things about him! Just be comforted knowing that it really feels like he wants you to succeed.
He is the best teacher i ever had during my studies. Extremely helpful and has really good command over his finance. I like the way he does fun in class and everybody enjoys his class. I will refer this teacher to all students who want A grade.
Believe the others when they say he's fantastic. midterm will surprise you, but you'll be prepared for final and assignments are easy marks. he gives FINA students a great base that will help them through the program while simplifying material for students in other programs. you'll want to reward him by getting A's and you'll never wanna skip class
Very good teacher. The material he covers is what you need to know and his assignments help you apply the theories that you learned in class. Although the mid-term was tough, it prepared me for the final. Didn't even buy the textbook, his slides are very thorough and he gives very good examples and analogies for the theories.
Great teacher. If you are in finance, and you are not taking his class, you should change majors or refresh registration page until FULL disappears and you can switch to his section. He is "harder" the other teachers, but will prepare you beyond the simple ABC's of the course.
His class is though. You have to learn on your own and think outside the box. Both his midterm and final were really hard, he doesnt prepare you enough. He is very pasionate about the subject but his expectations are higher that what they should be. The textbook is not helpful at all and useless !
Great teacher and economist.
he was an ok teacher but likes to talk A LOT and goes off topic a lot too (you can easily wait an hour in front of his office before you can talk to him). his notes are helpful but doesn't use the textbook at all.
Professor Newton is a very good professor who devotes his time and effort to taking sure we know the material. I would advise other to NOT take his class if you want to do well and not learn much. Inversely you should take him if you DO want to learn a lot and perhaps even willing to suffer a somewhat lower grade. Work hard, very, VERY hard!
He an interesting teacher BUT his exams are really hard, this class requires A LOT of work. His assignments are okay but his midterm and final were brutal. Really nasty questions that are always different from the sample finals and midterms he gives. His slides are confusing and they are very condensed with info. I would avoid taking him..
Dr Newton has the right approach: he emphasizes concepts over number crunching. His class does not require any more work than others overall. Marks are not any lower in his class than in others, though I think the exams are a little too difficult still. The slides are not confusing, they are actually quite good. I learned a lot in this class.
Very good teacher, Loved his class, very helpful when you need him, recommended big time, I would take him again for other classes
I'm graduating from JMSB and I come back to rate David.Looking back, he is the best teacher I ever had in JMSB. PHD from UBC and very knowledgeable. The materials are bit more than other sections but you will be prepared for the rest FINA classes. Also, it is a pleasure to attend his classes and listen him talking about finance.
Only teacher to truly care about your success in class. Always willing to answer questions. Responds right away to emails. Amazing energy. If you don't understand finance. You will!
Here's a tip, the text book opens, sure it wiley is garbage, but if you have problems, Mr. Newton is always available to help you out. He's the kind of prof who extends office hours and creates extra session to help students and his goal is to prepare you for further courses. Best class I've taken yet! Tip, take him with Mr. Lypny's 220!
I Don't know how you can say he is a good teacher. He is very knowledgeable yes! He does ZERO examples in class, he says tutorings help(no since his exams are so different).Solutions unclear with mistakes. I'm a great student hard working with A- average overall but even with 50 hours in I can hardly do his midterms (long questions).
I'll make it short and sweet if i get a B- and over in this class it won't be because of him. private tutors saved my life. He is smart and knows Finance, but being book smart doesn't make you a good teacher. Some might like him, but i didn't. Midterm average was so low he had to bell curve ( his exams are sooo hard)
HE REALLY KNOWS WHAT HE TALKS ABOUT , MAKE THE CLASS ENTERTAINING EXAM TEND TO BE HARD BUT WE LEARN A LOOOOTTT IN HIS CLASS GREAT GREAT GREAT TEACHER
Mr. Newton is always available to answer questions and help students who have questions. He genuinely wants everyone to do well. Yes he does give a hard Midterm but if you just learn the theory and understand what you are doing he will give you marks.
He is a good man, but it is really hard for the midterm and final exam. the textbook is not useful at all.
The fact is this: he is by far the most knowledgeable professor you will ever have. He is engaging, he is funny, he is a genius. He could talk about everything and anything on cue, and it's mesmerizing. But, his final was murderous, and his assignments time-consuming (the 3rd especially). Was my favourite class at JMSB til I stepped into the final.
he is a smart man. Doesn't to numerical examples in class which is strange considering this class is 3/4 numerical bases. The theory I can teach myself. His exams are more than hard. The final this year was fair which was refreshing considering midterm. If you take him expect to learn but, don't expect a good grade.
Dave is an amazing prof, very knowledgeable. He emphasizes theory in class, which many students might feel uncomfortable as this course involves a lot calculations, but he explains everything clearly in office hours. Midterm was hard and never like the past exam, but this semester's final was fair, so an A level grade is very approachable.
People who complain about the lack of practical examples in class just like to have their hands held in life. Emphasis on theory is crucial to understanding how to compute and given the volume of content that needs to be covered, it only makes sense to have the math bits pieced together in tutorials. Tutorial questions ++ for final exam.
No doubt that he is smart and helpful, but VERY HARD EXAMS. And the actual exams are not similar with his samples.
Mr Newton is a great teacher and he's a genius in finance. He speaks quickly, assignments are time consuming but not hard, midterm and final are brutal. His exams are extremely hard compared to the samples he gives.
For anyone in this summer 1 class, we did have an AWESOME time with Mr.Newton and each other. He even gave us clues about what is gonna be in the final. No doubt he is smart and very helpful. He is famous for tough mid-term so be prepared. If you really want to learn about Finance, take this guy.
Great professor, always makes the class interesting. Sometimes goes off-topic on related finance topics. Always helpful, extends office hours when needed. Exams are challenging but completely fair. The trick is to understand rather than to memorize the material. Would definitely recommend.
Learned a lot !! he makes you work but you'll gain so much that it is worth it ! he prepares you well for the other FINA classes
David Newton is by far the best professor in the Finance department. He is a prophet, whose advice goes far beyond just finance; he genuinely cares for his students. The knowledge you will learn in this course will give you a strong foundation for all other investment-related courses. Assignments are long, but rewarding, and exams are hard.
Amazing lectures and amazing professor! Really helpful and really try his best to make the lectures lively. Explain every notion with an interesting story and make us easier to understand. The lectures are not just based on textbooks, Dave is always willing to tell us more based on his own knowledge and experiences! Would definitely take again!
Dr. Newton's class is interesting. There are lots of discussion and examples. It should be helpful.
best professor among four classes I'm taking. Take his class and you won't regret.
Very interesting class, but sometimes the slides goes too fast. learned a lot from professor Newton and get to know a lot things of Canada.
David Newton made Finance very accessible and extremely insteresting. This is probably the first class of my undergraduate studies that I was eager to attend to, it was always a pleasure ! The professor was able to convey his true passion and his genuine caring for students was very appreciated. I would strongly recommend him
Amazing teacher, amazing class. You will learn useful things in this class simply by attending lectures. Grading is very fair. Do yourself a favor and take this class with this teacher!
I would highly recommend Professor Newton for FINA 411. Makes the class his own and gave lectures not only for the class but our future, which was great. His tests were super fair! There was only a midterm, a project, and final. The stock simulation project was super doable and taught me a lot about creating a portfolio. Take him for this class!
Mr. Newton is an amazing professor. At the end of the semester over 90% of students voted for an extra class (8:45 AM) just to talk about finance related issues which had nothing to do with the exam (For the sake of discussion). It should speak for itself. Exams are fair and projects' grades are overly generous. U will never regret!
mr newton is a passionate teacher who cares about his students. however his classes diverge very quickly from the notes and test material. at the same time, i feel that students are not properly prepared for exams, which involve a lot of math that is not practiced in class. his lectures are also very fast and he takes a lot of material for granted.
I really enjoyed this class and this prof! His tests are not easy but if you understand his powerpoints, go to class and ask him questions he really prepares you to perform well on the final. He is extremely helpful and always there for his students and is open to discussion in class, even if off topic. Highly recommend.
His class is very rush. Hard to follow without 385,395,410 knowledge. Words used on exam questions also complicated. Problem solving question won't teach at class, and short answer questions's answer hard to follow by class lectures. However, his class is very interesting, and many real history including, very good at that part!
David Newton is a professor extremely passionate in his field of study and truly wants his students to succeed. That being said, he wants his Finance students to be prepared for the professional world and makes you work for your grade. If you want an easy A Professor Newton is not the right choice, but if you want to be learn the most take him.
Amazing and brilliant Professor. Class discussions were great and Dr. Newton really cares about his students. Also gives good career advice. 10/10.
We dont do practice problems in the class with him but he is expecting in the exam to be able to do some hard ones. Not a good teacher for an introductory course. He explains well but we are also wasting a lot of time with all kind of discussions not that related to our material. Overall he is a decent teacher very approachable as well.
One of the best Fina professor i have ever had. But Exams r EXTREMLY *10 hard. i found his lecture interesting since he talks a lot about real world and opens your eyes what what is waiting you out there. But NO EXCERCICE in class nor out of class. If you need good grade dont take him but if u dont care about grade then absolutly worth to take
Great teacher. Everything he teaches is relevant and very interesting. Adjusts the exams to reflect what he's taught. Finally a class that I feel like I've learned something I will remember forever and use in life and not a class where I solely learned formulas for the exams. Great guy, super nice, unique teaching style.
Amazing teacher. Honestly you will learn a lot. You will learn real-life worthy material! Exams are hard, but he is a fair grader and is not there to fail you. He wants what's best for his students. You will get a lot out of this class. Not your typical learn-and-forget class!
Great teacher! Knows his stuff, makes you work hard but curves the grades up so you don't get penalized. Gives you great feedback with comparisons to other classes and is not afraid to share his thoughts on extra-curricular subjects, which is always interesting. I would definitely take again.
The best class and teacher I've ever had at JMSB. Davis is clear in terms of grading and the exam. There is only a midterm and a final exam taken in calss. No textbook, so be present in the classes and do not skip any class as you both learn a lot of new and interesting stuff and know what will be asked in the exam.
Insanely smart man! He is very interesting but also overwhelming to those who aren't super comfortable with Finance. There is a textbook, but he strays quite far from it. I find him a great teacher, but the class is very hard. If you are strong in Finance or want to learn a ton (and don't care about getting only a B) go for it!
Just had him for Fina 385, hands down the best teacher I've had so far in JMSB. Highly recommend taking him. The class is not easy but his lectures are extremely interesting and he's super helpful and overall a very nice guy.
One of very few professors who will use real life examples and stories to make you understand the concepts. Extremely knowledgeable, approachable, helpful, and caring. It was one of the hardest classes that I've personally taken, but I do not regret it at all. Take him if you really want to understand finance - and be prepared to work hard! :)
Just an all-around incredible professor. He really cares about both the material and his students. Going to class was always something to look forward to as it gave me the chance to learn about Finance in an extremely engaging way. He will go further than most professors to ensure that his students understand the material and he's funny too!
One of the best professors I have had at JMSB. David has a lot of knowledge to share and knows how to share it and will let you know from the beginning of the class that he doesn't want to you to worry about grades, all what matters for him is learning.
One of the best after Rami Matta and the famous Comm 215 small sized professor. He has a lot of knowledge and share them with very good life example so it is easier to understand. He really cares about students future and give career advice. He really works toward making everyone absorbing knowledge.
Honestly had such a great experience with this teacher, would 100% recommend. Funny and truly knew the material inside and out which made him amazing at being able to explain it to the class. The material itself can be challenging and his exams aren't that easy so study well. Probably in the top 2 teachers I've had in my University career.
Best prof I've had in all of JMSB. His teaching style is so great, will talk about a theory/principle and then use a story to explain it making it digestible and interesting. He's incredibly smart, affable and funny. You will be making a big mistake if you opt for another section. Caveats are: his exams are tough and you HAVE to study a lot.
Best jmsb prof from far !
Great teacher, very thoughtful insight.
Great prof; very passionate and strongly emphasizes the pursuit of knowledge over futile group works or lab grinds. Exams are no pushovers--don't expect to memorize past exams and succeed. Understanding is key. If you plan on dedicating a career to finance, then prof. Newton is a necessary experience--it will gauge your love for the field.
very knowledgeable, but all over the place.
Best teacher at concordia. If you are a finance major, you should take his class at least once before you graduate
Best Finance Prof at JMSB. Kept the class interesting, gave real life situations and basically told us how money can be made! Portfolio Management was the course. Fair grader, and wants the best for students!
Best teacher at JMSB. Take him and he makes all other profs look foolish. Enjoyed every class and learned so much. Trully cares about students. Smart guy.
Amazing professor.
Count yourself lucky to have him during your undergrad as he mostly teaches graduate classes. He focuses on real-world applications and his classes are very interesting. Don't plan on memorizing formulas, his tests focus on your understanding.
Awesome teacher. Dave is very knowledgeable and the class discussion are always very interesting and insightful. He is also very accessible outside of class and will respond to your emails very quickly. Definitely recommand him ! However, make sure you understand the material well. This is not a memorization class
not many teachers care about their students as much as Dave does. This class is not an easy A but he won't fail you. Memorization is useless for this class you need to understand what and why you are doing things. attendance is optional but you miss engaging lectures and incredible learning opportunity. Top 2 teachers at JSMB.
Dr. Newton, please find a way to duplicate yourself, we need more passionate individuals like yourself in academia.
Great professor, takes the time to help students become better people.
Awesome
Dave is by far the best professor I have ever had (and probably ever will) at Concordia. He genuinely cares that you actually learn something useful from his class that can be applied in real life, rather than just teaching and testing you on material. His lectures are amazing and I would definitely take him again.
I'm graduating from Concordia soon and Dave is seriously the greatest professor you will ever have. He tells you exactly what is going to be tested on the exam, it's challenging but everything he teaches you is applicable to real life. Take him if you can!
Other classes will just ask us to memorize stuff and the mechanics of long answer questions. In this class with M. Newton, we have to actually understand the material and not just learn everything stupidly. He never uses previous final/midterm questions but gives a lot of indications about what to study.
He is an amazing prof. will make you work hard for your grade. He will support you. genuinely cares.
One of the best professors I've ever had. His way of teaching is great and you actually learn stuff that you'll be able to apply in the real world. He cares about comprehension and writes his exams in a manner that requires you to truly understand the material (contrary to other professors at Concordia). Looking forward to taking his 411 class.
This teacher is so knowledgeable. He knows his material. He can make the greatest analogy if you dont understand a concept! For example, he can compare a theory to real life situations. Dont be shy to ask questions in class! Yes he does elaborate a lot and thats because he knows his thing. He answers his email! ATTEND HIS CLASS, youll LEARN
He's a bit all over the place, but his analogies are great. He doesnt really give practice problem coz he wants you to understand the intuition which is great until you don't understand the intuition. He answers email very rapidly which is a blessing bcs summer semesters are so short. the only issue is that office hours are packed with students.
He's really passionate about Finance and makes lectures very interesting. He makes tough exams but surprisingly most students do well. You'll finish his class enlightened.
Very nice and entertaining teacher. Lectures are packed with info which is tough to stay focused on but his notes are very informative and give you almost all that you need when it comes to math but for theory, the textbook is advised. He is very passionate about finance and although the class is hard, you leave the class understanding the subject
350 characters is honestly not enough to describe the quality of this Prof. Dave is caring, thoughtful, and challenged me as a student to think critically instead of regurgitating what was on the slides and the textbook. The most approachable prof i've had at JMSB. That being said, your GPA might take a hit in consequence of this.
Hard class, but really Interesting. Dave is really passionate and he successfully shares his knowledge and love for finance. If you are willing to challenge yourself and develop your critical thinking enroll in David's section ! You will learn a lot.
His exams are tough but he grades them reasonably. One of the most understanding teachers I had! He makes you think with his insights. He doesnt ruin your GPA and career with a bad grade. I recommend taking him.
If you actually want to learn something about Finance, take David Newton at any course that he teaches. Don't expect to Ace this class by waiting till last minute or not reading and practicing. However tough he might be in his exams, you will still be glad that you took him. Get ready not to miss lectures and practice a lot.
The best teacher ive ever had. Hes so interesting, you can listen to him for hours. He loves his students and he wants everyone to do well. Exams are hard so go to class its important.
Best Finance professor I've had. Cares about teaching the student valuable information and skills rather than just blindly testing. I think every finance student should take one of his classes before graduating. Even if you somehow do not learn (unlikely), you will adopt the right mindset.
It's difficult to put into words how amazing professor Newton is. As someone who basically picked their major out of a hat, he made me fall in love with finance. Had him for both 385&411. You NEED to take him for at least one of these classes. Best way to succeed in his class is to record his lectures (he lets you) and re-listen to them to study.
Very caring and very knowledgeable, went easy on us with the COVID-19 crisis. His lecture notes are clear and specific you can pass the course by following them, other than that hes very energetic so you wont sleep in class
One my favorite profs. Newton is hilarious, knowledge, and caring about his students (especially during this COVID pandemic). His lectures are heavy but very interesting. Exams are tough but he is very fair and clear on his expectations. His 411 course made me think of finance in a new light! You'll definitely *signal* your learning by taking him!
Newton is a real gem! Newton has a different way of teaching. Memorizing will not help you in this course. I made that mistake the first time I took him in FINA 385. I ended with a C+. To be successful in his class, you really need to understand the material! p.s. He was really on top of the game during Covid-19 compared to other classes.
Newton is not your average prof- if you're used to reading the textbook and then blindly applying a formula you won't pass. Newton tests you on your *understanding* of the topic. His exams are tough, but he grades softly. He's approachable, hilarious, always willing to give advice and an all around phenomenal guy. A must for your time at JMSB!!
He is the best professor I've had at JMSB so far. At first I wasn't completely sure about majoring in Finance, but now that I've taken him, I feel passionate about what I'm doing. His class is hard but you learn a lot more than you'd expect. Great person overall.
It is really useful.
So far, one of the most inspiring professor who knows his subject at perfection. Very accessible for feedbacks and help during and outside of class. Exams are a little bit hard as his goal is to make us understand concepts and not only "plug and chart", but if grades are too low he would usually curve them up. I would recommend David Newton!
He is a great professor if you truly want to take a step into the financial world and understand how things work . However if you care more about grades than level of learning then it will be challenging
Honestly, David Newton was a gem. He knows about his stuff and clearly love teaching. His lectures were super interesting. I would recommend him 100% even though his exams are a bit hard he will curve it up or grade fairly.
Prof. David, is the smartest, best professor in Concordia (if not Canada lol). He is a very helpful professor that cares about his students a lot, and is willing to explain stuff in different perspectives to help you understand the material right. I would defiently take with him again. God bless Newton.
Avoid at all cost this teacher during this whole situation until classes gor back to normal, on campus classes. He makes his exams so HARD plus no option to review. which adds more stress as you are taking the exam home, and cannot review your answers. I think he would be great for in class classes, but avoid for online classes.
What a legend Professor! He's literally the best prof I've had by far. Despite his difficult exams, he really tries to help everyone to understand not just the course content but also world economy problems. This man has so much knowledge you can't get bored of learning. Will def take him again
He is one of the best profs you can ever take at JMSB. He is extremely passionate, cares about his student's learning, and fair. You will learn a tons from his lectures, highly recommended if you are into Finance. Hard exams but fair grader and will curve you up. Overall, he made the class an enjoyment to take.
Professor Newton is a one-of-a-kind. He is a professor that really leaves a great impression and will be a great experience. He truly knows what he's talking about and I would not hesitate to take his class. He goes beyond just class materials and connects with students to push them to go further with their education and future. An absolute gem!
By far one of the best professors I have had at Concordia! His lectures are very clear and his ability to explain complex ideas with simple examples is very helpful. I really feel like I learned something and got my tuitions' worth. His exams are not easy but not impossible if you prepare well and pay attention in class.
One of the best professors in the university. If you aren't interested in finance after taking his course, leave. His class is no pushover and is quite difficult so if you aren't prepared to risk your GPA for this course then take another prof. Make sure you ask questions when you don't understand, he will not turn you away or forget about you.
Best professor ever
Doctor Newton went out of his way to help me for a Finance project 2 years after I took his class. Once his student, always his student. It is only fair for me to give him an amazing rating because he went out of his way for me.
Clearly a knowledgeable person, especially in the fields of finance and economics.
Very good at explaining!
I have never gotten a professor in my years in uni that cares so much about their students performance!!! He makes this difficult class easier to understand and pushes you to put in the work!! He goes above & beyond to make time for students that need help by offering lots of office hours!! TAKE HIM !!
I had professor Newton for an undergrad and graduate class. One of the best teachers I ever had. His courses bring the best out of you. At the end of the day, I believe they make you a better person. I am saddened that I will likely never have a class with him again. Was a pleasure to be his student for the past years.
His class was very interactive. Normally online classes are a snoozefest, but his engaging style of teaching kept most students focused. His tests are hard but fair, he is more focused on having his students actually learn the subject than just chasing grades.
David is a great professor, caring and accessible. He handles his topics well, with examples, and answers questions. He gives heads up if a tough topic is ahead, and provides sources if someone is rusty . He takes the time to explain, in class and one to one. He dedicates time to discuss whatever we bring up: thesis ideas, jobs, papers.. A mentor!
Professor David's lectures were very interesting. The conversations that arise during the lectures are what keep my attention the most. The exams were only there to solidify what you've learnt in class. If you have been attending classes, you would not find any trouble with any topic. It was a pleasure to take this class. Truly inspirational.
Goes above and beyond to help his students and is very accessible. 10/10 would take him again
He will challenge you and make you think outside the box. His teaching style is engaging, and worthwhile You can tell he is passionate about his job and cares about the students. He reminds students that although the class can be difficult, he wants students to learn something, instead of striving for a good GPA (interpret that as you wish lol)!
The best teacher in Finance hands down. Thoroughly explains all the topics and demonstrates where they might appear in a real world setting by giving concrete examples. If you can take him I would highly recommend it, you will finally gain something important from your education.
Professor Newton is truly an expert! He wants his students to grasp the intuition so he takes his time to explain concepts thoroughly. He also frequently relates concepts to the "working world", I could tell that he wants the very best for his students and their careers. If I have the opportunity to take him again, I will.
I think David Newton is a great professor, very knowledgeable and genuinely cares about his students. However, his class is very difficult and the hardest class I've taken by far. If you want to learn then his class is perfect for you but if you only care about getting a good grade then you should avoid him. He will challenge you to another level.
He has that rating for a reason. He genuinely is the best prof ive ever had. He is that prof that you talk about in the future that made you love a subject you originally didnt like. I would let this man teach me to watch paint dry. he genuinely is that good. take his class if you can and i promise there isnt a world where you could regret it.
Best Fina Professor so far! If you want to actually learn something definitely take him. The exams are hard but he will explain every little detail of the course material in class.
If you've done your research on Dave, he is precisely that. Unless you have taken FINA 385 with him, he will quickly make you realize that you have learnt nothing in previous classes. His goal is for you to learn, not memorize or mindlessly apply formulas. Don't take him if your goal is to get an "easy A". Take him if you want to learn.
Mr. Newton is unequivocally one of the best profs at JMSB. He really cares about his students and wants them to learn and understand the main concepts of the class. While his exams are hard, he curves accordingly and the grade distribution, in the end, is still pretty high. With that said, his tests are fair game and not so hard if you study well.
David is able to make you understand pretty much everything. This teacher knows a lot and loves what he does. Worth every penny of my tuition!
I honestly dont understand how everyone gives him a 5 rating. He's definitely knowledgeable and enthusiatic but I think that he is a terrible teacher as he spends all class time talking about out-of-topic things that interest him. He also brings up cumbersome examples that help no one. He spends no time on class material. I found class time useless
This is by far the most knowledgeable teacher I have had at JMSB so far. His lectures are insighftul, pertinent, and so interesting! He pushes his students to understand the core ideology instead of merely trying to solve a problem with formulas. He handles his material so well and gives concrete life examples to make students understand better.
Loved taking his course! You learn so much that is applicable to the real world. Don't miss out!
if you want to learn you'll take professor Newton. Amazing teacher and soo inspirational
This was my last class before graduating, I could not have asked for a better teacher before departing. His lectures are interesting, his knowledge is incredible, and you will learn more in one class with him than in all of your other ones combined. His exams are challenging, but show up to class, listen and you will get a good grade. A MUST take.
Best JMSB teacher hands down.
Amazing Professor! Took him twice and will take him again for a third time if I can
Professor Newton wants his students to learn and challenges them on the tests. He has a very in depth knowledge in his field and will often share interesting facts and theories about finance. Lectures are super important to pass his class. Always available if you reach out and genuinely wants to help his students.
Lectures were super interesting and he has a great way of explaining complex topics in ways that make them easy to remember and clear to understand. Tests were on the difficult side, but he makes up for it with curving and allowing students to get easy marks back with two other small assignments. Highly recommend!
Professor Dave, is one of the best teachers in concordia. The contant is so well taught by him and is so clear. The material is a bit hard, but with hard work and studying time, an easy A is very doable.David took care of each and every one of us, He reassured me when I was anxious and stressed. He guided us for the final contant with exact details.
Actually teaches you instead of regurgitating a textbook. His exams are hard but you will come out of the class feeling like you actually learned something.
Firstly I want to say that, Professor Newton is one of the greatest professors at JMSB. I truly enjoyed his classes because with the theory he would slide in real-world examples. That being said, he is always there for his students and super understanding. Cannot wait to take 411 with him!
He teaches us what we need in real life instead of reading everything from the book. He can give you career advice based on your strength and weakness. He is caring and knowledgeable. His exam is tough but fair. If you want to learn about the finance industry instead of graduating without any knowledge, definitely recommend taking him.
Amazing professor with extensive knowledge
Professor Newton is a great professor! His exams are on the tougher side but he curves accordingly. You actually learn something in his class. 10/10 would recommend
Great lectures although he does seem to address some concepts in a hurry making it difficult to follow through
Truly an amazing teacher, by far one of the best at JMSB. Dave's going to make you understand the real world use of the information you're learning about rather than just making you learn it for the grade. He really cares about his students. Couldn't recommend him enough!
He is deep, and encourages you not to contemplate sketchy. He teaches you how to figure out fundamentals, not simply deriving formulas. Be open to think critically in a fun way.
He's one of the best teachers I've had at Concordia, if not the best. He's funny and his lectures are engaging. He makes difficult concepts easy to understand. 100% recommended.
This teacher really cares about his students and will go the extra mile to make sure that every individual student has the tools needed to get a good grade. He uses real world examples that make his lectures interesting and worth coming to class for. He requires a textbook but all you need to study is his lecture slides.
I feel like everything has already been said. If you can take one of his classes, don't hesitate. He's my favorite professor at Concordia and he made me actually like finance.
Dave is a gem, you have to attend classes as the exams only cover in-class material but he is super funny and good at teaching the concepts. He wants you to succeed.
Great prof, very engaging and entertaining during the lectures. He is not like many other professors in University. His lectures do not read off PowerPoint slides and he clearly teaches with passion and experience
You can tell Prof Newton really wants you to truly learn and understand the material in his class and he provides more than enough resources to do so. He makes sure to give real tangible examples to help students better understand the core concepts within the material. I would 100% recommend this professor.
He is a really good teacher. Makes the subject much easier to understand than one might think. Would definitely take again.
Great professor, explains with detail.
Professor Newton has truly made Fina 385 an interesting class. He was able to keep me focused and engaged for the entire 3 hour lectures. definitely recommend
Honestly David Newton was probably the best teacher I had in the finance department. I have taken many classes with him and its been a positive experience every single time. I would even go as far to say that we need more professors like him in the finance department. If you don't take this professor you are doing yourself a disservice.
A good professor who is the only professor I met in JMSB really delivers knowledge and really wants students to learn something rather than just to pass the course. choose him as your friend lol.
Great at explaining everything
The professor is very knowledgeable and keeps the class engaged. As a first year student in the first class of COMM 221, David was able to keep the material relevant and tie it to real life scenarios while making it an interactive class. Would take him again for sure.
He suggests a textbook but it's not mandatory. Always open and responds fast to questions. You can see he loves what he teaches and wants students to understand the subject and be critical thinkers. We had 5 quizzes and 1 final, which is really time efficient. Will always give you as many points as possible and never gaslights. Amazing teacher!
While I do appreciate his correcting the things we have mislearned or not learned in previous courses. It is unfair to grade 15% of the class on a review quiz (due on the second week) for which you have no material to prepare and is essentially based on whether your previous profs were thorough in their teaching. Good approach but don't grade it.
While I liked the way he teaches his class, which can be funny, his midterm is going to be very different from what we learned in class and the slides, despite him saying that he doesn't use the textbook. Get ready to study hard.
David Newton gives good lectures in class that uses real life examples with a little bit of humour. His midterms, however, are completely different from what it says it will be according to his slides, especially the long questions. Also, grading 15% for a review quiz to see if our FINA 385 teacher taught us well is unfair.
His lectures are good, funny and uses real life experience and examples, which help us understand better. But his slides lack a lot of content, because his midterm was quite different in content from what we are used to.
Best teacher at JMSB! Great teacher that really helps you learn the topics so that you understand them in a real world setting. If you pay attention and prepare using the vast amount of resources for the midterm and final exams you can do very well. 10/10 would always recommend taking when available.
Really great teacher. Although, I'd say the slides may not be that much detailed, the textbook and other online sources may be more recommended despite him saying that he doesn't really use it. The course content itself may be a bit harder for the average student. Overall, Newton has been kind and funny with his teaching.
Best professor at JMSB. Provides a wealth of knowledge and makes you think critically. His tests are extremely fair and nothing is a suprise. Helps you prepare for life beyond school and makes you evaluate how well you've retained what you have studied. Even provides information from past courses that you should know, so you can be well prepared.
Professor Newton is an amazing teacher and his teaching style is truly preparing us for the reality that is waiting for us once we finish our degree. Maybe the exam was not the easiest but that's how it should be! You will have to put in a multitude of hours to study but this is a 400-level class after all. Would definitely recommend taking him!
Awesome teacher. Gives clear real-life examples that can prepare you for the brutal world of finance and business out there. For the course itself, my only wish was to put the solution/explanation for the MCQ for the past exams. Overall, the course content is much harder and heavier on theory than expected, but just study well and try to understand
Great teacher. Test wasn't easy.
Mr. Newton is a good professor, and is readily available outside of class. He puts emphasis on preparing you for real life. However, the school still requires us to take exams, and his material fails to prepare you for *exams*. I genuinely believe he is an excellent professor, but my GPA is more important than his insight. Would not take him again.
Great and funny lectures. As for recommendations, 2 "proper" assignments about the content actively taught in class instead of a prerequisite review quiz and a portfolio simulator (one of the latters can be for bonus marks). And a "proper" midterm review pdf with question bank and solutions. Overall, It take him to learn, but not so much for GPA.
I enjoy his lectures but not his teaching style. He keeps stressing that he's preparing us for real life but this is still a graded university class. Rather than feeling prepared for real life, I feel stressed about my GPA. I also don't know how to feel prepared for his exams. He says not to use the textbook but his notes aren't enough to prepare.
Professor Newton is the best professor I've had at JMSB. He always goes the extra mile for his students and wants to help in any way he can. I cant relate to any of the negative comments and I genuinely don't understand where they are coming from. Yes, his exams are slightly more challenging, but he adjusts the grades later on. Thank you.
LISTEN!! I have never rated a teacher in all my time at Concordia. David Newton is an extremely funny and interesting teacher. Just take him u will not regret it tbh. Favorite teacher i have ever taken.
Prof. Newton is knowledgeable and very considerate towards his students. His lectures are fun and insightful and he is very passionate about the subject. While his test could be tough and odd, he make sure to answer your questions and go easy on the grading. This class is not an easy class but if you put in the work you will be fine.
Professor Newton is the best teacher I have had at JMSB!! I actually feel like I have learned something in this class. Its a challenging course don't get me wrong, midterm and final are hard but you learn and lectures are interesting too. If you don't take this teacher you are actually missing out. He cares about his students and their grades too.
He's a hard grader and he is funny. I've had a bad experience with him I get straight A's but couldn't get above 70 on anything he was involved in writing/grading (except 100 on the portfolio). If you rely on ratemyprof to choose your prof be very sceptical of some of these reviews for example the April 12th-15th reviews have grades before finals.
He is very kind and truly cares about his students, but his teaching style wasn't for me.He tells us that the textbook isn't necessary yet the material he provides isn't enough to prepare for the exams. This was the class I was looking the most forward to,but ended up being the worst one. Again,he isn't terrible but I just didn't like his teaching.
The BEST finance professor Concordia has to offer. Any of the reviews that are negative are because students either don't show up to class and/or don't study and then blame it on him. If you want to succeed, go to class, take notes and email him if you have any questions. He teaches you real world concepts, unlike other profs who just read slides.
Very good teacher who is passionate about his subject and loves his job.
Amazing prof, really great with explaining hard to grasp concepts with common examples. He's very real and doesn't bullsh*t, very open to questions and is constantly encouraging cause he knows it can be hard to get it quick. That's why I encourage participation cause he puts things into perspective really well.
Great teacher all in all, his lectures are really meant for students to understand the material and he does a great job of using real world examples to help understand.
Very nice and easy teacher. Curves the grade if needed to encourage students to continue doing their best
The teacher's explanations about the material are very comprehensive. He portrays real-life examples which makes the course really interesting
He is a really good guy. He uses real life examples to convey his message and makes his class interesting. Do not be shy to ask for help, he is really caring and wants his students to succeed. I would definitely recommend him
Very interesting lectures and he provides relevant examples. The revision assessment is tricky and requires patience. Midterm is very hard even if you study a lot but final is fine. Simulation project is fun but don't gamble the first day. Also, he is sometimes funny which is nice for early morning lectures.
Professor Newton's FINA411 class is challenging but rewarding. His real-world examples make the material engaging. Unstuck ai and the free textbook were super helpful for exam prep.
Great professor. Explains topics in detail to make sure everyone understands.
Honestly he's the goat. One of the best teacher I had since im in concordia, would retake him any day !
Professor Newton's lectures are very informative about the subject matter. He will provide several examples on the board which complement his slides. I highly recommend taking Professor Newton for Comm 221 and FINA 385.
He is one of the best teachers I have ever had. His teaching method is amazing, you'll come out of the lecture actually understanding the material, his lectures aren't heavy at all. I usually skip a lot of lectures because I find them boring but his wasn't at all and he actually explains the material rather than just reading his PowerPoint.
Fantastic professor, this is an extremely knowledgable person. Take his course if you're interested in the material though. If not, you'll find it challenging to succeed on his exams. The questions aren't difficult per say, but you need to have a proper understanding of the theory and be able able to explain it, rather than just solving the math.
Literally best prof ever hands down. If you have the chance to take him 1000% do
Explains with ease
An amazing teacher. His lectures are interesting and he care a lot about his students.
He is a very good professor. I want to take his class again if possible.
I really liked this professor and would definitely take him again.
I took David Newton's Intro to Portfolio Management class 5 years ago. He is the reason why I have a passion for the markets to this date. I beat spy every year. That course changed my life and it's all due to his unique way of teaching, knowledge, and passion for the markets. He's goated.
His classes are a lot of talking but his lecture notes are in depth and clear to follow. I found quizzes a little tricky because some questions arent really expanded on in the notes but it could also be because i didnt look at the textbook. Overall a good teacher who after every quiz will do zoom meetings to help answer questions that were tricky
He's a very chill teacher. Sometimes the classes can go off track, but most of the time you have resources to help you understand things more clearly.
Super kind and caring professor, he is always open to helping students in and outside of class. Very approachable and helpful. His moodle is super organised (thank god) and contains all the information you need (recordings, past exams). You don't have to go to class but I would recommend it, he's a very engaging professor so you don't get bored.
the GOAT finance teacher, provides plenty of resources and while some exams are hard they are fair
