He is a fantastic professor, I loved having him so much I wanted to have him the following quarter. He is funny, truthful, he curses A LOT, and he knows his stuff. He will actively work with you to try and help you. Don't be fooled by his laid back demeanor though, you will have to work. By the same token, he makes it fun to work!

I did not like the class at all. It was horrible. Made us buy a lot of "required things" which was a waist of money. We didn't use everything. Also, his attendance policy is the worst. The "music" he makes us write is no use, boring, and not helpful to our grade. He made us use a thesaurus to write music, it sounded dumb and not interesting at all.

Attendance policy Tedious. If you go to class, you get 1 point. BUT, if you don't contribute in class discussion as much as he would like you to, he will dock 0.1 point from your 1 point so in the end it brings your attendance grade down and affects your score. He goes on long tangents which is fine but wastes a lot of class time. Long readings!

I loved the ethics class! Readings are heavy, but doing them before class makes the material very manageable. His feedback on your writing is very useful and he's definitely there for you. Explains course material in a way that students can understand. Quick to answer any questions a students have, and his examples are very helpful.

5/5 for ethics (BIS 359), 3/5 for CS - I took both. David's a great guy, and his explanations in the ethics class were great, but he made programming harder than it should be. Ethics papers had great feedback/topics and I find his lectures generally good. I'd take him again, but not for programming classes. He really cares about students' learning.

Looking at the reviews below, I didn't have that many bad experiences with David. His lectures can throw in a lot of big words or go over your head, but if get the gist of the lesson you'll do well. He really cares about what you get out of his class. He assigns quite a bit of work but is fairly lenient with due dates. He's also very funny.

Prof. Nixon is a great teacher who knows what he's doing and obviously really enjoys teaching. The lectures are really good and thought provoking. The homework outside of class is not too much and it relates to the class and isn't just busy work. Make sure to attend class as much as possible but if you miss one day it is not the end of the world.

he was so leftish and political almost randomly, today there was a random lecture on toxic masculinity and what makes a man and a woman again when it has nothing to do with our class. it's weird and uncomfy and bs

To add context to the review below: he was receiving feedback from us for a future lecture in his ethics class on the last day. Prof Nixon is extremely welcoming and genuine - this was best opener to college I could ask for. Fun class with how it mixes sci-fi with philosophy, but be prepared to do lots of readings and write a short story final.

the ethics & society course unexpectedly shifted to parenting and had little relevance to what the actual class was (talk about false advertising!). Lectures were 'fun' but lacked breaks and good chairs. Sometimes got weirdly sexual. Expect lengthy disc. posts and papers that are all due w/in 2 days of each other w little to no helpful feedback.

Professor Nixon is thoughtful and funny with his lectures. He cares about his students and wants you to succeed. The textbook was interesting. Expect to read a couple chapters/articles weekly and write lengthy discussion posts about them plus online quizzes. There were 2 exams and a paper. As long as you attend class and read, you will do well.

Fun class (ethics/philosophy & parenting), very interesting readings and assignments. David is a great teacher and I'd love to take him again. Advice: pay attention to his attendance policy on Canvas. I wish we had "Rate My Classroom" because the room we had would get a 0/5. It was cold and the chairs sucked.

Nixon is really good at explaining these broad and hard to understand topics to something that a lot of students can understand. If you're a visual learner I would definitely recommend. In terms of work obviously it will be challenging and difficult in some ways but if you put in enough time to just understand the content you'll do good.

Thought I would give some respect to professor nixon, you can tell he is very knowledgeable and he is a very funny guy. The lectures can be boring sometimes but he explains everything thoroughly, the exams are pretty easy if you study the practice exams, and overall a great professor

This review is for BIS 367 Intro to Ethics, autumn 2024 (new class). Professor Nixon has interesting lectures and gives very helpful feedback on writing. He is very good to work with in office hours too. I had a good time and would love to take another class with him.

Professor Nixon was a clear lecturer, had great jokes, and made complicated philosophy papers actually easy to digest. Grades are based on daily participation and 3 papers (not super long). The class isn't too hard as long as you put in the work needed.

Some parts of his class were enjoyable, some readings/ course work was engaging and fun. However, most of the work is tedious readings and responses/ quizzes. Lectures turned into rants that often had content unnecessary, or just annoying to sit through for the. Sometimes the work piles up and gets a bit heavy. Zero tolerance for late work.

Honestly, this was too hard for a bcor class. I thought he was going to be great from his rating but a lot of the work was not fun. We were required to read a long way to a small angry planet which was not a good book in my opinion and his midterm grading was harsh. Then as a final we were required to write a "compelling" 3500 word story.

I took BCORE and now ethics with him, and he's still one of the best profs I've had. Engaging lectures, lots of readings, but it's balanced out by the knowledge you get in class. Very welcoming atmosphere, very open to discussion. Felt more like conversation than lecture. Tests are hard but threshold for 4.0 is a 90%. Would take again if I could.

David Nixon is a nice guy, but he gives a great deal of homework and is a very picky grader. He makes you read dozens of pages between each class, and write a 7-page single-spaced sci-fi story. The most difficult part of the 7-page essay is that it has to be a compelling story, which is extremely difficult unless you write original stories often.

One of the classes I've found myself enjoying a lot more than I probably should. For a philosophy class, he has a great way to make things interesting and he's quite funny. With that being said, do be careful because he gives you a *lot* of reading. Don't procrastinate it, it's usually upwards of 40 pages.

Nice guy, weird policies. Attendance is mandatory and skipping causes grade drops (will even out later though). 4.0 is a 90%+ so it's fine. Tests and exams are similar to questions he gives on quizzes and hw. Will not let you use your phone whatsoever and will lowkey shame you. Interesting topics. Lecture is just yap about stuff read.
