His tests are OPEN BOOK! The one and only final project is a joke, if you turn it in you get a 100! Lectures are easy because everyday he has some video to watch which are actually pretty cool, notes are ppt. I will take him again if I get the chance.
His tests are no longer open book... His lectures are a joke, all he does is show movies and read straight from the book. The only reason why I haven't dropped this class is because I DO NOT want to take it again!
This is a very easy class if you know something about computers. He can be a bit boring sometimes, but the work is easy and fun. We only have one test and it is very very easy. Highly recommend!
this class was awesome. he lectures from the book and uses ppt slides, really easy to follow and the content of the class is really interesting. he shows clips and movies a lot which makes the class fun. i'm taking this prof again for mc3390.
LEctures are exactly from the book, but he gives pop quizzes (not hard ones... he basically gives you the answers) so you have to go to class. Other people acted like the tests were hard, but I read the chapters assigned and did the easy review sheets and made an A on each test
His class was pretty easy, but interesting nonetheless. I'd take him again if I had the chance
I took this class in the summer and it was easy and fun.
Nice guy and an easy course all together. Gives you reviews for all of the tests. Funny guy, makes the class interesting by showing TV clips. Never a dull moment. Easy A
It seems like common sense stuff so you don't want to study much but study or you won't do well on tests. All multiple choice tests. Gives extra credit and is slightly amusing. Will help you no matter any time. Over all a great guy
All I have to say about his class is don't take it if you are prone to falling asleep in class. He walks into the room and dims all the lights and turns on a movie at the start of EVERY class. He says the florescent lights can mess with some peoples eyes. I'll tell you what messes with my eyes.......THE DARK!!!!!
Easy class, just be there as he randomly takes attendance. Take notes on the slides and read the book and you will get an A, also he gives extra credit so you can mess up a little on the first test
awesome teacher. makes everything fun and clear. gives alot of extra credit opportunities.
A very cool professor. Some classes were interesting, others were not. Offers some extra credit that totals about 3 or 4 points on your total average. The tests are hard if you don't study because of very detailed questions (I should know, I almost didn't get a B because I never studied for his tests!). I've heard his 3390 is awesome.
I took his publication and design class over the summer and really enjoyed it. He is a great professor and I am taking him again for 3319.
Good teacher. Makes lectures interesting w/ videos and pictures. Provides notes to make note-taking more simple. He gives two extra credit opportunities and a couple simple projects. I got an A.
Really good teacher! Provided ways for students to be creative such as keeping a "visual journal." Content could be boring at times, but you have to learn it to pass the class. He tried different ways to make class interesting though. Talked about movies, videos, watched youtube a lot. Good class. I learned quite a bit.
Nolan is a pretty good teacher. He used powerpoint, videos, pictures etc. to make the class interesting and easy to relate to. Tests are pretty strightforward. I never opened the book, and just used the pp notes and did fine on tests. The 2 projects are VERY easy and a great way to boost your grade if you bomb a test. I'd definatley reccomend him.
Professor Nolan is a great teacher! I am currently taking his class, and I do not dread going at all. He uses a lot of pp, videos, and pictures to get his point across. Study for the tests and you will be fine. Oh, and he gives a lot of extra credit!
Mr. Nolan is an all around great professor. The guy is very knowledgeable and he knows what he's talking about. I took his summer classes and it's pretty fast paced, try not to fall behind. His tests are a little hard, but if you listen in class AND read the textbook you should be fine. Gives out enough extra credit and projects to make up your grade. Great professor! Wish we had more people like him in this university.
He's great. The classes were always interesting, with the exception of a photo class taught by his TA. The tests are difficult, though, so read your book and study as much as possible. He's extremely intelligent and very personable. Outside of the classroom, he still carries a big smile. Everyone should take his class.
Love love LOVE Professor Nolan! He is an excellent professor and is passionate and knowledgeable about what he teaches. He uses an assortment of multimedia, so class is never boring. There are a few major projects, but if you do them and attend class, you will do just fine.
A really great class! He was interested and very knowledgeable about visual communication! His tests definitely require studying, but he gives you exactly what you need to know ahead of time. He also curves and his projects/assignments are super easy/fun!
Great professor. Cool subject. Only professor who teaches this class. Takes attendance. My favorite class. He really knows what hes talking about. Tests are not too bad. Lets you out early a lot. gives you note taking guides. one poster project and you have weekly visual journal. Class is not very boring. a basic Mass comm class.
Nolan comes off as an easy prof (gives you notes before class) but you HAVE to go to lectures, listen and take good notes to make an A. I struggled with the class and came out with a solid B. Good professor, though. Very interesting and fun to listen to. I didn't use my book at all.
This class was a very average class. It was boring to attend bc he read off the slides when i had the notes in my hand. the tests are very difficult so study hard. There were huge curves on the test so clearly no one was doing that well.
Very interesting class, and wonderful professor with ample visual examples of all concepts. Really knows his stuff! Incredibly clear and funny, and makes class interesting with his side comments. He offers two extra credit opportunities. His exams are pretty difficult, though, so make sure to read the material and study!
Very interesting class. He definitely knows exactly what he is talking about which made me want to pay more attention. Tests were pretty difficult and some classes were long and boring; but the Visual Journal on Tumblr was a creative way to do homework, I never forgot a post.
LOVE PROFESSOR NOLAN! His class is interesting. He shows a lot of videos and examples so it definitely supports what he is explaining. He is very knowledgeable of the subject, and his experience helps a lot! his exams are a MUST study for..but it is not impossible to pass. Extra Credit helps SO DO IT!
At first this class seems really easy, but it's not. The tests are really hard and your grade depends 90% on tests and 10% on 2 projects with 2 opportunities for extra credit. The tests count so much, if you do bad on even just one, regardless of extra credit and good projects you might still make a lower grade than you wanted, like me.
Nice guy, lots of work/projects. If I had to say anything it would be that it was hard to take notes on how to use the InDesign program when he wants you to also be doing the movements on the computer. He needs to have printouts for the students that give instructions on shortcuts and instructions, showing us 1 time is hard to remember. Fun class.
The class is really entertaining so its not hard to attend class, but his test are pretty hard. Definitely go to class, take in depth notes, and read the book to study for test. He also has a project that's pretty simple. Test are your main grading scale
It's possible to never attend class by scanning in and leaving, but I wouldn't recommend it. The class is harder than it seems. Dr. Nolan is a cool guy, but his lectures can be hard to follow and boring. You pretty much have to buy the textbook, otherwise you won't get what he's talking about. Tests are painful, but there's extra credit and curves.
Very interesting class but some lectures can be boring. Dr. Nolan is a very down-to-earth guy, and knows alot about this subject. Attendance is mandatory because notes are fill in the blanks and comes from lectures. Lots of videos & visual examples which are a plus. Tests are not hard if you study notes & read. Extra credit given. Made an A!
Go to class every day. Memorize all of the powerpoints and you will do well on tests, because they're pretty word for word. Only downside is that since there are only 3 tests, each one has a ton of information to study for. DO THE EXTRA CREDIT CARTOON PROJECT. It will help you. Even if you do a bad job, you will still get some sort of credit.
I had him for visual communication and it was a fun and interesting class. A little challenging, however. Study hard. He shows a lot of cool videos and there is a project for an easy A. I recommend this class.
Nolan is my favorite prof at Texas State. I had him for viscomm and media design. He is so helpful, kind and patient. Take him if you can, you'll learn a lot from him and you can definitely make A's if you try.
He is really awesome! keeps class interesting! You have to study for the tests, but he gives a study guide and provides fill in the blank notes for class!
Having a small class with Dr. Nolan is one of the best things any Mass Comm student can do at Texas State. Media Design is fun, challenging, useful for your portfolio, and best of all you have a lot of free reign. I would recommend students come in knowing a bit of Indesign and Photoshop. It's still tough, but very doable.
Had him for Vis Comm and it was my favorite class. He really does take the time to make class interesting. Do the extra credit & the visual journal! And you'll pass!
Outstanding professor, makes the subject interesting.
Very nice professor, my favorite so far. Very helpful, offers easy extra credit. Attending class will get you an A, I honestly never went but got an A due to extra credit, and good test grades. Use reviews from Quizlet and Study blue for this course.
He's one of my favorite professors. He's so nice and willing to help you if you need it. Tests are straight from the lectures (fill in the blank handouts). Never used the textbook. Do the extra credit, it helped me get an A in the course.
He is one of my favorite professors so far! I enjoyed his class. You do not need the textbook, in my opinion. Class is mandatory because the hand-out notes have Blanks. Study hard and go to class!
He's a good professor, and it's a pretty easy A - gave out a few different opportunities for extra credit. However, I WAS BORED TO DEATH EVERY LECTURE.
You can't skip class and expect an A. Fill in the blank notes, but tests include notes from class that aren't on the handouts.
Dr. Nolan is a great professor; he's so nice, and he is just an all-around fun professor. DO ALL OF THE EXTRA CREDIT! That is a great way to guarantee you an A, as long as you go to class and study! I didn't do so great on the first two exams, but hard work and doing the extra credits got me an A+! Don't need textbook in my opinion.
I learned a lot in Nolan's class! He's engaging and knowledgeable about everything he teaches, not to mention super sweet and helpful. If you can do the work and follow instructions, you'll get an A
Nolan is an experienced instructor and you will learn so much from him! I got an A, but I worked for it. There are five outside assignments: a typography, wix resume website and three magazine designs, one of which will consist of your final project of 20-30 pages. This class is time-consuming, but it was my favorite class and it's worth it! TAKE!!
His class was very interesting and inspirational. A lot of definitions to remember for exams but he provides a test review. Gives plenty of extra credit which saved my semester. Attendance isn't mandatory but you could miss extra credits if you skip the class. I learned a lot about cinematography and photography, I totally enjoyed his class.
LOVED this professor! He's incredibly brilliant, but so down-to-earth and charming. The first test is the tricky, but after that you'll be golden as long as you go to class. He offers several extra credit opportunities and a couple of projects, but he makes the material so interesting and easy to understand that it's not intimidating. TAKE IT!
Nice guy and a decent professor. Lectures are long, but he has videos to show his point. Spends an entire section on how males are pigs and they use women as objects and then in almost the same section he spends a week on all white people being racist. Does random attendance checks for extra credit. I would not take this class with him again.
Real nice guy and his lectures can be interesting for the most part. A few of them had me zoning out but for the most part he's funny and keeps the class intrigued. He gives random attendance assignments so it's best to try to not miss much class. The extra credit is great, tests are a little tough. I made a high B.
Dr. Nolan is one of the most kindhearted professors I've taken. I only wish I could've gained more from his class. It seemed disorganized at times, and honestly I don't think I've ever taken so many notes. I had a tough time figuring out what to study for tests. However, if your interest is in film or photography he's a great guy to know.
On one hand, this class is really hard because there's a lot of work involved and you essentially learn InDesign in a semester. On the other hand, you learn SO much and it's useful things. He doesn't give you busy work or anything he thinks you won't use in a future job. I would take another class with Dr. Nolan.
Dr. Nolan was very knowledgeable about the subject and remained passionate and helpful throughout the semester. He provided lots of extra credit opportunities. the tests are easy if you do his study guides. There are a couple of projects throughout the semester, they were easy and fun to do. I would definitely take him again.
Dr. Nolan is a great instructor. He knows what he's talking about. As long as you show up to class and do the work you'll do fine.
Wow. Most amazing class I have taken at txst so far. Nolan is incredible and the nicest man you'll ever meet. If you enjoy film, take MC3319. I had him for an 8am and I looked forward to going to class. You are missing out big time if you don't take him. Very respected and is a great guy to know in the media world. Lectures are SO interesting.
took this class online over the summer for a mass comm elective. Do not take this class if you don't want a lot of online work. Literally multiple assignments a week, including quizzes, and forum discussions. Takes up so much time during the week, expect to watch at least 40 minutes of videos per assignment/quiz.
Dr. Nolan is well respected & kindhearted. Very knowledgeable. He keeps class/lectures light & interesting. There is a weekly quiz+discussion post/response. Occasionally a short analysis to write. One major project that is straightforward. One test at the end of the semester which is the cumulative final. His expertise is in film and photography.
Professor Nolan varies on interesting topics. Sometimes class was really entertaining and sometimes I was trying not to fall asleep. He takes random attendance assignments - like writing your name on a piece of paper and turning it in - so do not skip class. The class is easy and tests are easy, just go to class.
He puts the notes on TRACS with the blanks empty so you fill them in in class. Try not to miss class so you can get the notes. The projects and or assignments are fun and interesting. His powerpoints have visual examples which are great so you get a better understanding. He will repeat himself so you know what is important.
I have taken David Nolan for two different classes and both have been phenomenal. He is an excellent teacher in both lecture and lab settings. His Visual Communication class taught me so much about design and his Visual Storytelling class taught me not only how to use Premiere Pro, but how to find and tell stories. He's smart, funny and supportive.
Dr. Nolan is an outstanding professor and I consider myself lucky to have taken a course with him. He's kind, generous, informative, and greatly experienced. His class curriculum is well organized and his email reminders make sure you're on top of your work. Please don't hesitate and sign up for his class!
Dr. Nolan is a truly exceptional professor. He has such an interesting background filled with fascinating stories. Sadly it's at 8am, but his lectures kept me focused the entire time. His notes are in-class only, so make sure not to skip. You can take a lot away from this course if you apply yourself. Highly recommend to any film or media buffs.
He truly cares about helping each student learn from their mistakes and develop their design abilities. He returns each assignment with detailed feedback. He responds to emails promptly, and when I contacted him about my struggling to meet assignment deadlines, he was very understanding and encouraged me to keep going, which I really appreciated.
Be sure to submit all your assignments on time for a good grade overall! They don't take a lot of your time until halfway through the semester, the online modules get lengthy. Learned soooo much from Professor Nolan that will really come in handy. Take detailed notes on his lectures; only time he shows them. Don't skip or you'll miss A TON!
I'm not sure why he doesn't have a higher score on here. He was really great. LOTS of projects and the final was REALLY LONG but honestly so worth it. The projects look great on a resume and not to mention you make your own resume website for the class that you can add them to. A must take if you want to go into any area of design. Cheers!
Dr. Nolan was really great! The assignments and projects were kind of extreme. He isn't a tough grader and is very understanding.
The class was good and clear, but the professor isn't great at properly meeting accessibility needs or handling emergency situations. Wound up failing because he couldn't help me.
Took this over the summer with Dr. Nolan and it was so worth it! The class mainly consists of discussion posts and quizzes and they're super easy. His lectures are very interesting since they're all about films. He gives good feedback, responds to emails fast and is really kind! The final is a film analysis answering some questions. Super easy A!
Dr. Nolan is great. He responds to all questions and helps you if you need it. The class itself is good, but you really have to work for it. There are big projects and the final itself is creating a magazine. If you aren't proficient in media design and photoshop, you might have a hard time. Overall, good class and professor if you need to take it!
Really great professor. Cares more on what you learn than what you earn. Definitely worth taking.
I took this class online and LOVED it. Dr. Nolan cares about what you're learning more than anything and is so knowledgeable about the material. There were recorded lectures with quizzes and a discussion board post each week. A midterm and a final exam. It was a very easy class, but I learned a lot about visual communication. Definitely recommend
Class was fairly easy, but super project heavy. Nolan didn't really communicate a whole lot with the class, get ready to teach yourself the materials. Just do the work and you should be fine.
Loved him & loved this class! Super easy, just read the directions and you'll honeslty get A's on all assignments. He's very kind and his assignments are open ahead of time! I'd take him again.
TAKE HIM! He is a sweetheart! His class is an easy A. Literally do every assignment given and put in the effort! I really enjoy this course honestly. It is a good GPA booster if you need it or if you're in need of a mass comm elective! Due dates are EVERY Friday. No tests (except final).
Probably my favorite online course I've ever taken. Dr. Nolan genuinely cares about the material and his student's success. Each week consist of a recorded lecture, discussion post, and quiz. No test. The midterm and final are written, film analysis over films in visual media. Easy grader, only wants to see you're understanding the concepts.
Dr. Nolan's class consisted of pre-recorded lectures with discussion posts, a few papers, and an amazing professor! He truly cares about his students and as long as you at least try on every assignment you will make an a.
Nolan is awesome! His class is very project-based which could be expected since its a design class so be ready! There are also discussion posts and quizzes, but they werent too bad. I love the feedback he gives; hes very respectful while still being truthful about what you need to work on. I lived and breathed Adobe InDesign, so be aware!
Super understanding and caring towards all students! Sends out good tips and tricks for how to make films and provides detailed instructions for each assignment. Very easy, but I also learned a lot!
very passionate !
Class was laid out simple, had at least 2 (no more than 4) assignments due every Friday. The assignments were super simple and most of the time just discussion post where you reply and respond to someone. The quizzes are not hard. Overall very easy class and good professor.
This class was pretty straightforward. All of the course content is available to you when the semester starts. Each module consists of a quiz and a discussion post. Other than that, the class is very simple
Only online lectures that are asynchronous but they are really good. Every week there were quizzes and discussions so it is crucial to watch the lectures to do well. However, the homework was easy. The textbook is used but you could go without it and still get a great grade. Also, he graded easily and he always gave explanations.
This is the first review I have ever left on a professor, but I felt compelled to do so because of how much I enjoyed this course. The requirements and grading policies are very clear. He is very passionate and good at what he does. I found the lectures to be very enjoyable, and this was one of my favorite courses of all of college.
Fall 2023 - MC 4381 (Digital & Online Media) - Texas State University Professor Nolan was great! I took his class online and was happy that I picked him. He kept class engaging through this virtual lecture videos and introduced fun assignments like basic coding and building our own mini website from scratch. 100% would do it again!
Chill class, grades a little harshly though. Overall, very good!
