If you like someone who reads directly from the text, he's your man. Ask a question and you never know what'll come out of his mouth. Simply put...if it's not on the Powerpoint slide, he doesn't know it. AND, heaven forbid technology fail..."What's a blackboard for!?!?," questions Prof Opp.
He's a nice guy buy he just reads the ppt slides, doesn't really teach. His tests aren't representative of his lectures, so studying from his notes isn't very helpful. I suggest another professor for bio 2 because the material can get really complicated...
Make sure you read the chapters. Over half the class never showed up to his class because he read from the powerpoint slides. If you read the chapters and do the review questions from the review section, you'll be fine.
Great teacher and very helpful in his office hours. His slides are very organized and give a good outline of the class, but like he says the first day of class "you have to read the book". I did and I got over 90% on every test, not to mention the extra credit he gives in class
ok professor. gives great powerpoints, but the tests come from book tests. the practice tests suck. not very creative. nice guy. extra credit for going to class.
easy teacher. boring lectures, but nothing hard. i think he came to class hung over after st. patrick's day...that was amusing.
He is a really great teacher. Tests are really easy. Need to review his slides (which is identical to what he lectures) as well as read the book. He takes alot of his test questions from questions in the chapters. Also so sweet in office hours and will help explain anything. Definitly take this class with him.
Compared to Bio 1, this was a breeze..read the chapters and do the questions in the back cause a lot of them show up on his tests! Definitely recommend taking this class with him!
great teacher, take bio 2 with him
the professor is boring as anything. his notes are literally an outline of the book. all u have to do is study from the book and its an easy A.
His lecture was fun for me. I recommend him to everyone. Even you are not biology major, you can enjoy his class. But Lab was sucks! I had a hard time to understand T.A. She is from some Asian country. And this T.A. is nice only to boys.
RECOMMENDED!!! ;)
i agree with a person below. dr. Oppenheimer's lecture is very easy for anyone to understand. but t.a. was not nice at all. i think we had same t.a.
AWESOME teacher, he is super nice in office hours and his tests are great if you read the book! Take him for Bio 2 for sure!!!
This guy is an amazing Biology lecturer. The best science lecturer I have had my whole college career. This guys tests are extremely fair game as long as you go along with the book. All in all, this is the man to get for Bio 2!! Make sure to get him...!
Lectures are boring! You don't need to go class... as long as you read the book! Tests are fair as long as you READ THE BOOK!! And the practice test!
he's a good guy. for someone who's not interested in bio at all, he's a good teacher but sort of boring. at least he tries to be funny. and he gives lots of little extra-credit quizzes. and he's pretty easy.
Hes a really nice guy. His exams are straight forward, tests the material he teaches, and doesn't try to trick you. Actually, there were times I could rule out answers on exams because they seemed to tricky for an answer from him. He wants you to understand, and he is OBVIOUSLY passionate about the subject. He will help in office hrs if you need it
He is a really nice professor with an obvious passion for the subject. He takes his lectures right from the book and puts his notes on line. He gives a few pop quizzes as extra credit. He wants everyone to do well, and this obvious from his tests. They were easy; he gave reviews and took questions right from the on line quizzes on the book site.
I never went to class because I didn't think his lectures were very helpful since they were posted online anyways. However you HAVE to keep up with the book. Instead of going to class I just outlined the chapters from the book and ended up with a B in the class.
one word...MONOTONE!!!! You dont have to go to class but there are random pop quizzes that are extra credit and will help at the end. His tests are not based from his lecture notes so it is a waste of time to read them. Just outline the chapters yourself. He knows what he is talking about but really boring to listen to.
The best BSC2010 professor yet! He was really clear with what he wanted us to learn ... and exactly what he mentioned in class came out on the exam! Be sure to read the chapters in the book and do the online exams and you will be good to go! Take advantage of his exam, because the other two professors' exams are not as easy!!
His test is very easy so it's a blessing to have him. Don't attend lecture-just use his lecture online to study. It helps to read the book but his lectures are clear. Do your best on this test because it goes downhill from there. He's a little monotone but clearly explains things.
He's a decent professor. Lectures are basically word for word from the text book. Was the easiest test of the three profs.
Cool teacher. Test wasn't that bad.
He is a cool guy, and covers everything that he deems important in his lectures, so you really don't have to read the text unless you've never had bio before. Studying the smokin' notes will help you pass his exam
Dr.Oppenheimer was by far my favorite professor of the three that we had over the semester. He was very knowledgeable and he knew how to clearly explain what he wanted us to know for the exam. His lectures came straight from the book, so reading it was not entirely necessary. However, it was good to have it for the other professors. Overall awesome
I did bad on his test, but it was my fault, his lectures are very easy and he is a good professor
He was the best teacher out of three. He is not an easy teacher. He makes his test fair. In class, he tells you what to study and his power points are very clear. You will do well on this exam if you really study and put the effort. Don't expect an easy A.
I did not like this class, the professor is ok. He is nice and kind of funny BUT he goes through his power points WAYY too fast and if your not good at science you will have a very hard time in this course.
Quick preface: he is the best of the Bio 1 lecturers, so good luck. His lectures are pretty scatter-brained, he begrudgingly helps students when they ask for help, and his test is fairly hard. He goes through the Powerpoints too quickly, but still can't finish his lecture by the end of class. Be prepared to teach yourself all of the material.
My favorite professor out of the three. His power points come straight from the book and go along with it by section, making it easy for you to remember the information you read. Tells you what you need to know for the test. Has cheesy and lame jokes but they are funny. I took my own notes from reading and got a 98.5% on his test.
SO HARD OMG. studied for two weeks straight, not doing anything else but eating and got a 50 on exam. He is cut and dry and goes way too quick.
It's clear Oppenheimer is passionate about what he teaches, but he covers everything so quickly it's hard to retain everything. Go to class, it's crucial. Study, study, study. His exam for the first part of bio 1 is very difficult. Overall, nice guy but you've got your work cut out for you.
Lectures aren't bad, but the test was a lot harder than I thought it was going to be. Decent professor, decent dude.
He is one of the worst professors at the University of Florida. If you have any type of accommodations or disability expect him to discriminate against you. His tests are extremely hard, and he does not help at all. DO NOT HAVE HIM AS YOUR PROFESSOR.
Dr. Oppenheimer is extremely knowledgable of cell biology! His lectures are super interesting too. He's also always willing to work with students to adjust the structure of the class. Exams are concept based rather than memorization. An A is very doable if you go to class and study a bit in advance. Great professor and very caring of his students!
There are like 7 exams. The TA will nitpick all of your assignments, not helping your grade. Technical difficulty after technical difficulty. Due dates change left and right. Extremely disorganized. But Oppenheimer is very open to listening to students about the problems that he causes. Definitely do not recommend, too hard for what you get.
Cancer Biology online with Dr. Oppenheimer was one of the worst classes I've ever taken at UF- do NOT take this class. There are 7 exams, the entire course is completely disorganized, no due dates, no accurate syllabus, and mistakes on every single assessment you will do. Dr. Oppenheimer does not answer any emails so it's impossible to contact him
Professor Oppenheimer is a good professor overall, but his test is extremely difficult. I would recommend going to office hours and reading the book very consistently. His lectures can be a little much, but they do cover the material well. He is very nice and patient, but a bit confusing.
I love Doc Opp, he is genuine, caring, and knowledgeable. He cares about what he teaches so much; so much so that you should be careful on which questions you ask during his lectures because he will go really in depth (and it won't be useful), and eventually won't finish the lecture in time. However, great teacher, hard exam, ultimately not an L!
You could tell he was very knowledgeable and passionate about what he was teaching. Sometimes got a bit confusing but I thought he was a good professor.
Oppenheimer is very nice and passionate about what he teaches. His lectures are pretty good but sometimes can be hard to follow. He gets distracted a lot and rarely gets through the full powerpoint. Make sure to read the textbook and study a lot because his exam is tough.
Dr. Op is a good guy for sure and he is pretty nice and open to feedback that you give to him throughout his teaching but his exam was kinda hard and his teaching skills aren't too great. You really have to study the material to get it down.
Oppenheimer teaches the cellular and molecular biology portion of the course. My only critique of him is that sometimes he isn't very good at explaining general concepts to first or second-year students. I didn't do good on his test but that's because I understudied. Read the textbook and/or SmokinNotes and you should be fine.
Professor Oppenheimer was the professor for the Cells section (1st of 3) for Biology 1. He is a nice guy and is very open to answering questions during class and during office hours. His lectures are very good, but it is a lot of information at once. Definitely prepare a lot for his test because it is tough. Definitely read the textbook.
He does Iclicker so attendance is mandatory. Hes very nice but I did not understand a word of his lectures. I got Smokin Notes and got an 80 on his exam though. His section of Bio1 was the hardest and most confusing because there is a lot to remember just try to keep up with studying.
Great lectures, very enthusiastic. Uses Learning Catalytics (Clicker Questions) in class, so attend! Very knowledgeable and clearly loves cell biology
A LOT of assignments. between canvas, LC, and exams it was a lot. 7 exams mostly all crammed at the end. A lot of material. Just study his slides and videos (memorize all pathways and do separate studying) and you'll do great. He understands the class is a lot and curves. Not very tech savvy. The class is interesting but it is mostly cell biology.
lectures are kind of interesting, important to go and pay attention. exam is hard!!!
I had him for the first exam portion of Bio1. The lectures are very in-depth. He does Learning Catalytics questions during class but he would hint at the correct answer. Highly recommend smoking notes as long as you read and review it you'll be set for the exam. The first exam is a lot of material but he made it very fair and most people did well.
I had Dr. Oppenheimer for the cells unit of Bio 1. His lectures and lecture slides were organized and meaningful. The exam was tough but fair. If you pay attention and read the textbook you will be fine. He uses Learning Catalytics, so attending lectures is necessary. Dr. Oppenheimer has a passion for cell biology, and he made the unit interesting.
I had Dr. Oppenheimer for the cells unit. He does iClicker questions, but if you have a friend in that class you can easily get the answers from them. I never really attended the lectures, but still did decent on the exam. Definitely the best prof out of the three I had for Bio 1.
The structure of this class was beyond questionable, but Oppenheimer was great and beyond understanding with everything that happened. He was kind and lenient and made up for the weirdness in the class itself.
Dr. Oppenheimer was a great professor! His Powerpoint slides are very text-heavy, but he tries his best to make the material easy to understand. It is obvious how passionate about biology Dr. Oppenheimer is, and if you pay attention in class and participate in the clicker questions during class, you should do well in his class.
I finished with an A for his portion of the class. He is very nice and really cares about his students' learning. I got a 75% on the exam, but the Achieve assignments and the Learning Catalytics really pad the grade. I would definitely attend the lectures or read the textbook, but not really both. LC questions appear on the exams so study those.
He was a great lecturer, hardest topic within bio 1, smokin notes helps cover all of the necessary content, requires learning catalytics but leaves them open to complete after class so attendance isn't crucial
He was alright. I found his exam to be the easiest out of the three units/professors. Goes fast in lecture and talks to us as if we already know the material which makes it difficult to understand at times
I really liked all three professors who taught BSC2010. Each professor teaches one unit and there is no final exam, just 3 unit tests. All of them had interesting lectures and were super clear about grading criteria. Read the textbook to do well on the online quizzes.
Easiest test out of the 3 profs (I didn't use smokin' notes for this one, but did for the others). He was a pretty good lecturer and was very knowledgeable.
I disagree that this exam was the easiest, but I do think that he has the most effective teaching style out of all three of them. The exam is not hard but there is a lot of material and some of it is covered at the very last minute. Learning Catalytics sucks.
There seems to be a lack of communication between him and the TA so it was a little frustrating at times. I like the prof, he's a good guy, but I wish he communicated better. His lack of communication and accountability as a professor is what made my grade suffer. Make sure to do the learning catalytics.
Oppenheimer was my favorite of the 3 profs. Kind of quirky, but I liked it, and he knew his stuff. Smokin notes made this class so much easier than it would have been. Be sure to do the learning catalytics
Most of the content is covered in lectures, and you can tell that he cares about the subject and is very into it. He even made us a practice exam when we were asking for one. Overall he is very chill and loves to lecture.
Dr. Oppenheimer is a good guy and a pretty good professor. His PowerPoints were overall well structured but he would read off of them too much, and would go in depth about topics that we did not need to know for the test.
Professor was very thorough and clear about content. Good professor, but really make sure to understand what's going on in the textbook so his lectures make sense. The tests were similar to the practice tests and (mostly) easy to understand. Nice person, sometimes a little impatent, but nothing terrible. Make sure to study but nothing impossible!
I struggled to learn material from lecture and spend 200+ hours studying YouTube videos. He tested on random concepts in the textbook never mentioned in the 400+ slides from lecture we were told to memorize. Majority of the class got a question wrong and he claimed he just couldn't give it back. Questions on the exam were unfair and no leeway.
Dr. Oppenheimer was caring about his students' success. His section of the class was very material heavy, so he had to move through the lectures pretty quickly. Sometimes he didn't have time to finish them in class. Don't worry about attendance being mandatory due to learning catalytics, you can still access them after classes.
Dr. Oppenheimer was the professor for the first unit and he was a pretty good teacher my only complaint is that he was unorganized and would be behind on some lectures. My recommendation is to use the Learning Catalytics he gives and to study in advance as there's a lot of information on his test.
Overall ok professor. Would recommend going to class since he does give insight to what is on the exam, but attendance is not mandatory. Did not use the textbook once and got a 75 on the exam.
His unit is mainly memorization, so if you memorize, you should be fine on the exam. the lectures were clear and concise. Dr. Opp was always engaging and helped the class with the learning catalytics. study the LC questions because they are very similar to the exam!!
If you watch and can memorize the lectures, you'll get an A. 7 exams but they aren't worth too much of the grade individually. The projects are worth a ton and are very easy to succeed in. I recommend taking after you've taken biochem but def not necessary. If you have any interest in the topic, I highly recommend.
Out of all the three biology professors (Baer and Gillooly), Oppenheimer was average. He was not a bad teacher, but not necessarily a great one. His exam was challenging though because his questions were very specific and it was content heavy.
Good lecturer, cares about the material that he is teaching. Definitely review the Learning Catalytics before the exam. Also Smokin Notes was really helpful when reviewing
It's a lot of information in a short amount of time. If you are good at bio it should be easy. I had barely any bio knowledge and I procrastinated studying so I ended up cramming, DONT DO THAT! Smokin notes was a lifesaver. His lectures are really boring but he isn't a bad professor just try to stay on top of it and study throughout the course.
I thought professor Oppenheimer was a good teacher. He was thorough in his explanation and when answering questions. I recommend using the smokin notes and reviewing lecture slides before class
Dr. Oppenheimer taught Cellular Bio. Lectures were thorough and slides were well organized (titles corresponded with textbook chapters). Always gave help to the line of students that formed 15 minutes before lecture started. Does the LC questions in-class and explains the correct answers. This unit is strong review from AP/IB bio courses.
Lectures were helpful, but he often assumed we knew some of the content beforehand. Go through learning catalytics questions for the exam, and read the textbook. A lot of exam questions are niche topics from the textbook that he could have glazed over in lecture.
He was a nice guy, but the lectures were pretty boring. Try to pay attention and go to class!!! Attendance isn't mandatory but I regretted not going when studying for the exam. Exam was fair, if you know the smokin notes you'll be fine.
Not the best bio prof, but not the worst either. His lectures could get boring and he taught as if everyone had background knowledge, which was a little frustrating. Go to class. Get Smokin' Notes if you can. I did the worst on his exam, even after the small curve, but I probably should've started studying earlier and/or gone to office hours.
he's very boring and I honestly didn't think he was a good professor but the exam is doable if you study properly and smokin notes helps for his exam
The class is lecture heavy I would attend them even, he gives hints to what's going to be on the exam & teaches well. Everything on the exam is the learning objectives and what's in the ppt. Was tough taking it as my first class freshman year but def doable. Just need to study esp for last section it's the hardest part.
Found his lectures boring and somewhat unclear; I learned most of the content for this unit by reading the textbook twice and making flashcards for key terms. His exam was less difficult than Dr. Baer's, but more difficult than Dr. Gilooly's. Getting an A is not impossible, but you'll have to put significant effort into studying for it.
Dr. Oppenheimer was ok. He wasn't the worst of the 3 bio professors, but his lectures didn't really align with the exam. Attendance wasn't mandatory, but he does learning catalytics questions during his lectures.
Oppenheimer was good. As a chemistry major, I felt that the material in this section was easiest for me to understand, but the lectures were kind of just ok. Did the best on his exam out of the 3. Reading the textbook I would say isn't quite required but helps on some of the harder, random, memorization stuff.
