He was a very bad teacher. He was unclear on many assignments. On presentations if the students missed a section, he would dress them down in front of the whole class. He refused to clarify difficult assignments, and when we ultimately got bad grades he would refuse to listen to reasons why. 350 words isn't enough to say how bad a teacher he is.

It was so hard for the class to get him answer a question directly, he never answered questions with our some long confusing thought.

Didn't really help me learn much in the class, lack of answers for questions, arguments/discussions on most subjects lead to even more confusion. He also had very high expectations of students for a 100-level course.

Awesome teacher!
Easy A in this class. As long as you do all of the homework (like 6 assignments) and the 2 presentations during the quarter your fine. He even gave us passes to turn in homework late 2 times. Sometiems its hard to get a clear anwser out of him but the class discusions are a great time. Over all i really recomend you take this class with him.

Enjoyed the group assignments--learned a lot from them. Did not appreciate his inability to control his temper & the vague instruction about assignments. Why should I have to quiz him to learn what an "A" paper is?--it should be clearly defined in the assignment. Written instructions poorly organized & not inclusive. He was frequently upset.
Ortiz is a terrible prof. His class is poorly organized and content poor, he beats media literacy to death and I honestly feel like I like basically nothing useful away from the class, Don't ever take one of his classes.
People complain that he is not "clear" about things and that is because PEOPLE ARE STUPID. Sure, there is some chaos with this teacher but thats to be expected. READ the assignment sheets he hands out and STOP asking questions during class BECAUSE HE HAS ALREADY ANSWERED THEM. And try to LISTEN. Discussions=A+
Enjoyed the class, but don't take if topic does not interest you. Topic: Media Literacy
This class was one of the worst i have ever taken. I didnt learn anything and i have never heard ortiz answer any questions directly he is vague and unclear on what he wants.
doesn't explain things very well, then we get bad grades...
I loved this class. Before taking it I had no interest and after I was super into it. Ortiz is extremely helpful and cares a whole lot about his students. He may not be very clear, but he's understanding if you have any questions and is willing to make adjustments to assignments. He puts himself in his students shoes and tries really hard.
covered really important issues and was always willing to chat afterwards or during office hours for clarity. Available for student mentorship issues as well
He has as great ability teach
awesome teacher know's his stuff verry helpfull and is good at explaining things
Don't take this class. He chooses his "favorite" students, but even they did not do well in this class. He is an unfair grader, does not explain anything well at all, and he thinks he is a God upon men.
Smart prof, nice if you are on his good side, or are a favorite. Is truly incomprehensible in his instructions, verbal, written, or otherwise. Very critical on grading of most people, laxed on his favorites, unless having a bad day. A very typical "liberal" type college professor, but very knowledgeable and insightful information/discussions. Basic
Class was fun and enlightening but too many group projects with deadlines and assignment criteria that is unclear.
Absolutely the worst teacher at cascadia. horrible instruction , even worse with interacting with students, cannot handle questions and treats students with the utmost DISrespect
The best thing about Dr. Ortiz is having thoughtful discussions with him about anything. He may be easy going in speech, but don't let that lull you into complacency and think his classes will be easy. You'll get good grades if you work hard to meet the assignment criteria and try your best. I think he's a good teacher and I'd take him again.
isn't specific about what he wants
I enjoyed this class for the simple fact that the topics covered are relevant and current. One issue that I think he should address is his temper and how he addresses students who are causing a disruption. Other than that I really enjoyed his class.
Most of his "lectures' were rants. The class that was supposed to create people open to different ideas brainwashed most of them with his b.s. Lectures were one-sided. Grading scale was unclear. Overall very bad teacher. I was one of his favorites, but it was still obvious to me that he was a bad teacher.
Lacks respect for his students. Didnt make me want to learn. Unclear with direction and poor methods of teaching
I had to work my butt off to get a good grade. He wasn't the hardest teacher but its easy to get on his bad side if you don't agree with him. He definitely has a temper and blames things on the students instead of taking responsibility. Overall, I got a good grade but I know he doesn't just hand out A's. Just remember to follow the criteria sheet
Very bad teacher. Acts intelligent and is adamant about backing up wrong information. He said people have "multiple ISPs"...Sets up his class as "discussion" class and rates you based on the quality of your "discussion". VERY ARBITRARY grading. Hotheaded mo-ron with a big ego thinks he's an expert on everything and teaches the class that way.
I would not recommend this teacher but his instructions are completely unclear. He plays mind games with students. If you ask a question by email he responds by telling you he already explained it. It is very frustrating and causes a lot of anxiety. I took the class online which may be the problem. He is rude but I think I managed an A anyway.
Ortiz is one of the worst instructors I have ever had. I have a disability which forced me to miss a class. He would not allow me to make up the work. He said his son has a real disability. I'm not sure what that meant, but he is awful.
Worst instructor I have ever had. He is very unclear in his instructions and grades very specifically, also when you email him questions the responses are very unhelpful such as "we already discussed this" "or ask your teammates" very stressful! Me and my group spent HOURS on our projects and i only got a c. Very unhappy
Took his class last year. Worst classroom experience of my life. Horrible teaching style, didnt listen to classroom concerns, and graded in unexplainable ways. The dean had to intervene and one of the entire class sessions was spent talking about how messed up the teacher is. It genuinely felt like he was screwing over the people he disliked.
I am warning all students: STAY AWAY. Terrible instructor, doesn't teach, projects have very unclear instructions and when you ask him for help he refuses to help, he also graded extremely hard even tho the instructions were so unclear. I studied hours a day for this class and got an awful grade. This class caused lots of anxiety, Dont take it!
worst instructor at cascadia by a landslide. He is unclear, rude, unhelpful, and biased in his discussions. He also embarrasses students in front of the whole class if they make a mistake. I am very upset about this class and how I worked so hard and only got a 1.9. Also expensive textbook and we didn't even use it!
Chances are you are going to take Ortiz at some point. His class is easy if you get on his good side. I do believe he picks favorites. But if you understand that his main philosophy is that students take responsibility for their learning then you will go far. His directions are unclear, but it you ask the necessary questions you'll do fine.
I differ from most postings on here. I do agree that his teaching style is student accountability- but there is nothing wrong with that, this is college! This class was awesome and the group project experience was by far the best group experience I have had at this school! Be engaged, ask questions, think critically and you will be just fine.
Best teacher ever.
Dave is a great teacher as long as you are willing to be responsible and work hard. He doesn't take bull and your grade will reflect it if you slack off. His group projects teach a lot about collaboration and different media topics. He uses a lot of videos and songs to connect the class material to real-world examples. I've had him for 3 classes.
Took an online class from Ortiz and spent the quarter frustrated. He was horrible at answering questions, his instructions were very vague and he frequently did not get back to you. Arbitrary grading (still unsure why I lost some points) and bad at getting grades back to you. Spent most of the quarter confused on what to do, and unsure of my grade.
like others have said, he grades at random and if you choose to say something he doesn't agree with he will fail you. I learned the hard way with that. The way he gives directions makes no sense and no one seems to understand what he wants. He also wants group work from his online classes and it's way too hard to get online students together.
I was very excited to take this class and was very dissapointed after taking the class. His instructions are very vague and unclear. He never replies to your emails and expects group work. I do not recommend taking any classes by this teacher. I took CMST 203
David Ortiz's cinema class is certainly an engaging and fun class. If you don't take one of his film class (I've taken both and both were fantastic) you will have missed out on one of the great classes Cascadia offers. He's founding faculty, so you know he is really passionate his class, the school, and his student's success. Great class.
Worst classroom experience of my life. Very biased professor and even refused to answer questions. His poor teaching style created quite a bit of anxiety. DO NOT TAKE HIM!
David is one of the best teachers I've had in college. He's very approachable and cares that you take something out of the class. He knowledges effort and if you show him you take the class seriously you'll do well.
Do not take a class with this man. He is teaching a cultural studies class, yet is extremely biased. His expectations are crazy. The class had nothing to do with the description when I registered. We have two textbooks, and 99% of our assignments are online rather than in class. I repeat, DO NOT REGISTER FOR ANY OF HIS CLASSES!
He doesn't care about the students. His assignments contain 0 clarity and most of all he looks like he would rather be watching paint dry than "teach the class". Not recommended
Ortiz is very helpful. If a student needs help, he can just stay after class and talk to Ortiz. He may not be clear on some things, but if someone asks for clarification, he is generally able to clear up any confusion. Anything not known about what goes on in class is strictly the student's fault, as everything discussed is online as well.
He really is not that bad. The class is primarily reading and spitting back "analyzed" material back to him. He constantly wants to know what you have learned and if you are confused, so I think he's trying to improve. Overall, if you don't want to read a lot of materials and don't want to show up, don't bother. Also, he still h
Instructor is great, good experience, learned alot and fun. If this instructor was rated harshly it is because students did not study or apply themselves. He is open to questions, takes an interest in student success and understanding. This instructor wants you to succeed at Cascadia and prepares you for beyond. Enjoyed his class.
Very hard and unfair. Never gives full grade for essays. The book is a disaster. very vague and unclear. can't rely on the book to understand the concepts. I am an A+ student, but this instructor is so unfair in grading. It's only a 201 class yet he thinks he is grading for a 400 level class.
Dave is a nice guy that likes to reveal his political views; of which are radically liberal. He's also a real funny guy. He likes to be called, "Papa Ortiz," do to his love for baseball and hip hop. Personally I disagreed with every word expelled from his mouth, but that's OK, I learned a lot from him with respect to communication & perception.
I took Cinema 201. The class was fun but not easy. I watched a movie every week and the schedule was repeated and simple. He was a great teacher who is fun and always welcoming to questions. The final and midterm was a group project which was both fun and horrible. Two of my members got an equal grade and did nothing but was fun to do.
I read the other comments and I can understand why most people don't like him. But, I thought he was decent. Class wasn't that hard and consisted of reading every week, blog posts, 2 quizzes, in class discussions, movies, and an easy midterm and final. If you're looking for an easy grade and actually do your work every week, this class is for you.
This class was very interesting . However despite working very hard and getting A's on my tests, my gpa did not match. The online portion of the class was confusing and sometimes it was hard to tell wich assignment we were actually doing. Sometimes he made us feel stupid for disagreeing with him. This class lowered my great GPA...
By mid-quarter I had worked really hard and earned 89%. The girl next to me hardly spoke English and didn't understand or care about the films also had 89%. I explained this to Ortiz and he told me to look deeper into the material (yeah okay). But after that I never missed a point and earned a 4.0. It's an easy class if you communicate well.
I really enjoyed this class as well as the teacher. It's a lot of work but it's very doable. He is a very reasonable guy. The classwork was very consistent ....same things to do each week with a different movie. The people who complain are the ones who arent doing the work. Again highly recommend.
my worst experience at Cascadia. I've got A in all of my classes in last year except this class. it was a online class and everything was really confusing. Dont ever take any class with him. Humanity was supposed to be my easy class and it ended up being harder than my Calculus 3. i got 4.00 in my Calculus 3 and 3.00 in my Humanity.
I have required A LOT of clarification on his assignments. They're pretty confusing and his directions are rather unclear - and his explanations usually aren't very clear either. Too much emphasis on group work as well. Keep up with the reading , always attend class, and participate as much as possible and you'll probably be fine.
Ortiz a terrible teacher, but I wouldn't take him again. He's nice and I found him to be helpful, but he's very unclear. His assignments are vague and the instructions are almost impossible to understand. Some of the things he "requires" for projects he doesn't grade on, and some things he doesn't "require" he does grade on. Very confusing!
I honestly don't know what you want. Of course he's liberal. Liberal is about open to new cultures so he teaches media, global studies and humanities. You're at a community college in Washington, get used to it. Great guy, amazing teacher. Do your work and you will have a brand new understanding of how the world works (and a good grade)
Great at teaching the material. I showed up every day and did all the work and I have a strong knoledge of the material now. sadly as a result of either a personal vendetta or bad bookkeeping I got a 0.0 If you want to learn a subject just go and sit in his class without registering but if you want credits you should find a different teacher
Amazing instructor. He really knows what he's talking about and is very inspiring. All of the topics we discussed were interesting and important. Very fulfilling class and an excellent teacher.
Dident give me credit for my midterm paper that I turned in twice. When I tried to find out what happened to my grade he delayed communication (lots of emails that didnt get anywhere) until it was too late for me to go to the school about it. Seems like a nice guy but save a copy of everything you turn in to him
I think he is decent professor. If you follow his instruction you will do fine. Sometimes his instruction is vague but overall he is fine. Don't hesitate to ask him questions if your assignment is not clear.
Instructions and what he want are very vague. I feel like I didn't learn anything new at all. Tons of homework that are frankly pointless. Wouldn't recommend to any freshman looking to take his class for the 150 requirement.
He love's it when you call him Pappa Ortiz - Hint to get on his good side. Nice enough guy. Politically motivated message to class. He's a proponent of communism. Good luck to you all!
Doesn't clearly answer questions. Lots of reading and writing. He acts like he is open to new ideas and peoples opinions but really isn't. Constantly changes his mind. Easy grader. Occasionally rude to students. Projects are ridiculously confusing and "out there".
Worst teacher ever. Avoid at all costs
His intercultural communication class was easy. His discussions for our class were awkward. There were weekly responses, a midterm, and 2 presentations barely used the book. Overall really interesting guy would take again.
Very unclear and you will be confused. You honestly won't get anything unless you talk to him about what exactly you have to do. I don't think his assignments are thought out, rubrics and instructions are very vague.
Professor Ortiz is possibly the worst teacher I have ever had. He is sloppy with his teachings, everything he says is dripping with distain, and he really does not keep an open mind. He is clearly bias about his teachings, hogs most of the class time with useless information, and when questions are asked, he barely helps at all. I would rate him 0.
He is a horrible little man who shouldn't be allowed to teach. I feel sorry for anyone who unknowingly gets put into a course with him. I hope that his narrow-minded views and stuck-up personality keep him warm at night. Avoid him like the plague.
Mr. Ortiz is by far the best teachermentor I've ever had. He not only was a proficient educator, but he also enthuses your brain through social events and scholastic learning. You'd be lessening your education by not taking his class. I received either a 3.9-4.0 by following his very clear and easy to understand guidelines in HUMAN, CMST, & GS.
Ortiz honestly isn't as hard to me as it is to others. Yes, sometimes he is vague with his explanations on certain assignments and projects but those who complain about not being able to grasp the weekly assignments are the ones who don't even open the textbook. What you get out of his class is what you put in and don't expect H.S level workload.
Mr. Ortiz is a very well- educated prof. He has a passion for education that is rarely seen in teachers. But he is vague in explanations, unclear of his expectations, and very close- minded to other people's thoughts on controversial discussion. This lack of clarity and defensiveness is what turned me off of this class.
Save yourself; take another class. He is extremely vague in what he wants from you and close minded during discussion. I won't be taking his class again.
i just took this LC course with him and S. Zale and honestly, he's not so bad. He's really intellectual, fond of knowledge and can answer to pretty much every questions of the students. If you r international student, i wouldnt recommend, but if you want to study media and communication stuffs, he's the one- most respectable man around campus.
He is awesome, he likes student to call him papa ortizz.
I would give easiness a 5 because really, the work itself is very easy. however he makes everything so so vague, and he is not good with communication or clarity whatsoever (ironic, being a media literacy and communications teacher) and this makes the work far more difficult than it need be. incredibly defensive and hypocritical.
I entered this class because it fitted my degree requirement, but after several classes with Dave, I found myself really enjoyed the atmosphere in class. We have had a lot of helpful discussion which helped me improve my abilities so much. I never thought that this will be such an amazing class. Dave is really a humorous and helpful teacher!
I would highly suggest you find another teacher, or take these classes online or pre-fall. I don't have enough characters to explain how terrible Dave was as a teacher. Always vague, never helpful, opinionated and hostile, etc. The only redeeming qualities were my classmates. Don't ever expect clear instructions or helpful answers.
I was disappointed to see the Prof. use his classroom as a political platform, seeing as he is on the board of a local district's political party. He was very narrow minded and disagreeing with him would lower your grade.
Worst class I've ever taken. Mr. Ortiz is so disorganized don't even try to understand any midterms or instructions. In fact, when he posted the midterm module, he wrote in a weird format so the due date wasn't even visible. Worst organization and communication that I've ever seen.
Worst teacher I have ever had in my educational career. Never take him unless you want to spend 2 hours arguing over his teaching methods. Frequently makes students cry and walk out of class. He then will assign homework and projects on nothing he teaches in class. He also grades based on how much he likes you as a person and not on material.
This is the worst professor I have ever taken at Cascadia. Constantly argues with the students during class rather than teaching the material. He has made multiple people cry during the class to the point of them leaving. Makes the argument that his class is a 200 level class but teaches nothing above high-school education.
He gets confused when talking about the schedule and when you ask for clarity he acts like you insulted him. He argues with students to the point of making them cry and then spends 20 minutes justifying it. He also grades based on how much he likes you and not on an academic scale. The most unprofessional educator I have ever had.
Gives interesting lectures and really wants you to succeed. However in class, he will wait until everyone speaks and he grades based on whether you can convince him your point of view, not on how good your writing is.
Takes forever to grade assignments. You won't know how you do in class until the end of the quarter
This class made me never want to take a humanities course ever again. Dave was constantly unclear, vague, and confusing. I read his awful reviews on here and still took the course, which was such a mistake. Please never take one of his classes.
Spends most of the class preaching about his political views rather than actually teaching about the course content. He is also very vague about what he's talking about when he actually is teaching something.
Monotonous. Repetitive. Doesn't answer emails ever! Difficult to participate in class because questions don't cohere with content learned. No phones or laptops. You can most definitely get away with not reading the textbook but rather skim it for discussions. Hassle and waste of time to get to school and get questions not related to course work.
Dave is ultimately a nice guy who wants students to succeed. The content in the class was interesting and there were no textbook costs. However, clear communication was a big challenge.
I don't think his interest is in educating, he throws out an excuse early on for those who can see what he's doing. Tip- Being forced to move away from normal seating + lies + not making sense + being annoying leave. Remember learning outcomes and what good professors do. It's not worth doing or staying because you "need" it.
Dave is a great guy I had him for HUM150. His lectures were very well put together and he has a lot of insight on issues in today's world. He can get confusing at times but just ask to explain what he meant and he'll say it in a different way for you to understand. As long as you keep up with the readings you'll be fine.
This is without a doubt the worst professor I have ever taken. He is completely biased and teaches his views as facts. cuts off any student who has different views and spends most of the class time putting students down. Actually made a student cry in class. Also, he made a mistake with an assignment and still gave zeros and straight up lied.
He wastes time talking about how we waste time. Plus wastes time on petty subjects. He forces us to talk when it is 8:45am and no one is awake. Everything was our fault in his mind. Its his way or the highway. The midterm is so confusing and not a lot of time to work on it. Get the community partner as early as possible!!!
While the class does require quite a lot of work, Professor Ortiz really cares about the things he spoke of in class and I personally found myself enlightened and engaged in meaningful conversation every class. If you put the work in, you will get a good grade.
I didn't know what to expect taking this class, but I ended up really enjoying it. At first, it was a bit overwhelming when I would check Canvas and see all the upcoming deadlines and homework, but he does a really good job of not blindsiding you. PS, read the textbook.
I hated this class so much, and I almost came to hate Mr. Ortiz. However, I keep a mental top 5 of best teachers in my whole life, and he might even be in the top 3. I took this class Winter 2016, and in Spring 2018, at another college Im still learning things about myself reflecting on his class. Great teachers challenge students to be great men.
Dave is a nice guy I will recommend him to anyone taking CMST 150. Try to build a relationship with him dont hesitate to send him an email or go to his office. In case you missing some assignment submit them in person before the class ends he will accept them and give you full points.
David Ortiz is one of the most challenging and confusing professors I have taken at Cascadia. He is the reason I made on account for RMP. His assignments are very confusing even though he gives us the rubric. He is a very hard grader and seems very reluctant to give out As in the class. I did learn a lot but I would not take his classes ever again.
I have this professor for an online course, so I am not sure what he is like in the classroom. However, his online class is the best I have ever taken. It is well organized and easy to follow. He gives great feedback and is very nice with answering any questions. I would definitely recommend this professor for an online course!
Frequently avoids answering our questions, is unclear about assignment deadlines, and wastes an unreasonable amount of class time. The assigned reading is almost never discussed in class, and lectures are just him bouncing around videos and articles without going in detail. Talks about his radio show every day. This man should not be teaching.
I have no clue what this class is even about. From what I am hearing from other students, almost nobody else has a clue either. He won't give a straight answer to any question, just avoids answering with marginally tangential replies. Feedback on assignments is very vague. For a professor of communication, he is really bad at communicating.
Worst teacher I had ever met. Plenty of homework and due time is ridiculous. 1am for discussion and 12 pm for the quiz. I never met a professor like that! I was really angry at him because he gave us a very poor grade and when I see the average grade, I was shocked. Never take his class, if you do you will regret.
The instructions for assignments are unclear and he refuses to answer questions about it, or he goes around the answer to the question. Says he replies to emails within 24 hours, rarely has this happened. Does not explain group project or any other assignments well. I would not recommend this professor to anyone except my worst enemies.
350 characters is not enough explain my absolute frustration with this class and its professor so Im just gonna say this: dont take his class if you care about your gpa, dont take this class if youre stress threshold is anything but extreme, dont take this class if youre uncomfortable with squashing your beliefs for a grade, just dont take it
Dave is by far the worst professor out there. What bazaar about his class is the assignments are due 1am and the quizzes are due 12pm. That very ridiculous for assignments to have that kind of due date.
Covered social justice and equality type topics. Raise your hand, he shamed us for not talking. Missing one assignment brings an A to a B. One of the books was irrelevant & it was impossible to find quotes to use for assignments. Lectures were sometimes boring. Weekly discussion board posts of 350 words. Poorly explained grading criteria.
He's okay, but I don't think I learned much in his class. Every lecture was about his political views and opinions on some social issue, and his ego is HEAVY. He brags about himself and all these ordeals that he speaks at and it gets annoying. He was pretty understanding, but very non confrontational. He shames the class for the stupidest things.
For a communications prof, he sure is awful at communicating. He doesn't answer questions or give clear instructions, even on midterms/finals. His American Cinema class is a very interesting one, and I am very sad that he is the only professor teaching it.
This class kinda sucked because at first it felt like I was learning a lot about movies but then I started looking at how he graded my work and it was so inconsistent. Also he always expects you to talk in class even if he just asks if you have questions. Sometimes it felt like he planned the entire class on just answering questions.
I'm glad that I took these reviews with skepticism and decided to see for myself anyway, because he was excellent. He was fun to listen to and gave great insight on political and cultural issues. Perfect? No; his assignment criteria was in fact confusing at times, but it wasn't so bad to warrant all the one and two star reviews.
Dave was so nice, I'm surprised he doesn't have a higher rating on here. I liked how he asked what we learned at the end of each class to make sure what we learned stuck with us. He was also very approachable to talk to after class and scheduled time to talk to us outside of class. He also gave us speech coached to help us with our finals.
While in person Dave seems very nice and charming his teaching methods are trash. He is very disorganized and confusing. Midterm was unclear and after repeated attempts by the class to acquire an example we never received it. Constantly pushing his own political/social views to the class. As a communications professor he sucks at communicating.
he's too sensitive! class was giggling and he kicked the whole table group out of class then he went to the school and wrote a report on it then when kids asked what they did he refused to respond. he does too many unnecessary things! would not take this class again just did it for the credit!
Two textbooks that he provides. He forces you to talk even if you don't have anything to say. Expects comments. The class material was interesting. He talks about random things that he wants you to connect. The readings are interesting but long. No tests. If you do the assignments then you're good. There are two presentations for the finals.
Gave awful instructions for midterm, and basically none for final. Half of class wasn't even sure if it was a solo/group project. Focuses class time on Q's/comments. Beware, unless they fit his beliefs/views he is basically going to shame you or tell you why you're wrong. EASY to pass just regurgitate his views. Does not practice what he preaches!
I don't understand all the negative reviews about him! I've taken three classes with him and he is a very considerate and understanding prof. His lectures can be a bit unorganized and when he gives grading criteria it can be confusing but he specifies a certain time during the class for questions about the assignment and grading before. Great guy!
Prfsr Ortiz's grading criteria for written assignments are simply terrible. I'm an English major and consequently have dealt with many essay grading rubrics and writing prompts. His writing prompts are extremely vague and poorly written. The course's organization on canvas is a total mess. You can pass, you'll just want it to end fast as possible
This teacher is awful at explaining his work. his online class is very disorganized and there might be a chance on missing an assignment. On the better side, he seemed nice and helped out when necessary
I was extremely hesitant to take this class because of the negative reviews, but it was required. I think people graded him way too harshly. His class is a little unorganized and some of his assignments are confusing. But he was always available whenever I emailed him questions, and he was very nice, and overall the class is really easy.
He is caring and willing to work with student to help them succeed.
I do not recommend taking a class from this professor. His directions for assignments are extremely unclear, and when you ask for clarification, he will still not give you a concise answer. His assignments are generally easy but ONLY if you actually get to understand the questions he asks! Easy course, I'd recommend using textbook.
He was very poor in giving instructions and he wasnt helpful when responding to questions. He did give extensions for assignments.
Tough grader. Lots of reading from two textbooks. Instructions for assignments unclear and he doesn't really answer questions when you ask, makes it more confusing. Only one of the two textbooks really relates to assignments. Midterm and final instructions unclear. Great class to take just wouldn't recommend him as the prof.
If you are considering taking a class with Dave... don't. This class was unorganized and frustrating. Discussion board questions were worded poorly and often took multiple people to decipher. Midterm was a mess and even with two weeks left have not received a grade. Wildly unhelpful in emails.
David is really nice and helpful if you reach out with questions. Unfortunately, you'll have to do that a lot since he's terrible at giving instructions on assignments. Class is graded on weekly discussion board posts about the two books you read and additional web readings, and a midterm and a final so it's really hard to get an A in his class.
Be prepared to email Dave at least 6 times for a question you have. You still might even walk away confused. This class was a nightmare that is now cutting into my break because I have to redo two assignments as I misinterpreted Daves vague instructions. Take this if you want to constantly be frustrated and play interpreter with every assignment.
For a communications teacher Dave sure doesn't communicate well. Prepare for instructions that make no sense and 5-6 emails for one question
Ask questions that makes zero sense whatsoever, harsh grader for no reason when his grading guidelines and instructions makes zero sense. I can't take this anymore and i'm dropping
Terrible teacher, his essay topics make no sense for what he's after. grades people so harshly when it's not even the student's fault that he can't communicate as a communications professor
Terrible professor, stay away. Can't communicate as a communications teacher. Awful skills and just likes to jam a bunch of fancy words together to make himself sound smart.
He's terrible at giving out instructions on what to do. Doesn't grade homework for weeks so your grade looks awful constantly, doesn't respond to emails either.
Dropping his class because he's a harsh grader when his assignments don't even make logical sense. He tries to sound smart by grouping a bunch of fancy words together but makes no sense at the end STAY AWAY FROM HIM
Worst teacher I've ever had, I can't believe I'm paying for this class when the teacher doesn't understand the topic himself. He acts like he's smart but his questions makes no sense
awful teacher, had him last quarter. tough grader and doesn't explain the assignments well. His weekly question seems to be made up by himself. they don't make logical sense and you still have to answer it to his liking, otherwise, he gives you a bad grade. How am I suppose to anwser a question that makes no sense in the first place?? Dodge.
Bad teacher. Get away from him
For a communications teacher, he sure sucks at communicating. I wonder why we have teachers who don't deserve to be a teacher in America. He should be fired.
Planning on dropping this class. He's awful at giving instructions. I wish he learns how to communicate.
I wonder if he even likes his own job. He should be taking communications himself. I wish he understands how awful his instructions are
He sure grades hard for having such a bad reputation on his communication skills
all of the other reviews for him are true, He's an awful teacher. Don't take his class.
If I can give him a 0 I would, an awful communicator.
If satan became a professor it'd be him. He can't even explain his own assignment well. Don't take his class.
stop giving out group projects, they are awful. Skip his class because he's a terrible teacher.
I didn't have to take his class, I wish I didn't
Unclear grading criteria, doesn't explain his assignment topics.
He likes to jam a bunch of "smart" words together and makes his whole sentence unclear and stupid.
kinda wish he gets fired for having no lectures and he's also a terrible grader
PLEASE READ IF YOU'RE THINKING OF TAKING HIM David is hands down the worst teacher I've ever had. He doesn't use canvas properly, he uses extra credit wrong (not doing it counts against your grade), and I emailed him over 30x back and forth trying to solve many issues and all I ever got back was 4 word useless replies. Please don't take him.
This guy changes the way he grades weekly. Has no clear plan in his grading process
Im honestly so surprised that he has any bad reviews. I told him that I was struggling with some mental health issues and that I having a hard time staying on top of my work and he was so understanding. He said that I could take my time with catching up on assignments and that he wanted me to succeed in his class. almost brought me to tears ngl.
It is ironic that someone who teaches communications is really terrible at communicating with the class. Also this class doesn't teach anything about communicating, but rather focuses on politics
This man. Be prepared for BOGUS grading, and unclear instructions. He is lenient with deadlines, but the way he orients the class is messy and confusing. He is also sort of hard to get in touch with outside of class. Not great at replying. He is fair if you get to talk to him, but if you leave it be, you may suffer grade-wise.
I understand all the negative reviews here, but if you give him a chance then he's not that bad. He might be disorganized and not be very good at teaching, but he's a really generous and lenient fellow who is very fair if you get to talk to him. You just have to give him a chance and you'll be fine.
Organization is TERRIBLE, teaching is POROUS and UNRELATED to the class. Very confusing lectures and course layout, which is extremely frustrating. Not worth the money.
Teacher was incredibly politically biased, treated students with any sort of differing view much more negatively than the rest of the class. Terrible communication as well for being a communication professor. Would not recommend him at all.
Easily the worst professor I've had. The instructions were always vague, confusing, or downright unreadable because of all the grammar/spelling mistakes. Ironically, really bad at communicating. Avoid this professor if you can, he is lazy and doesn't know what he is doing.
Inconsistent grading criteria and you will get basically nothing out of going to class. Ortiz is a very nice and understanding professor if you need something, but is difficult to get a hold of, and his assignments and feedback are often unclear. Every assignment is an essay or a group presentation, hardly anything is actually about film.
I cannot put into words how much you should avoid this professor. I would rather serve an eternity in the deepest depths of hell before spending another moment in one of his lectures. You may think that I am exaggerating the evils we were faced with in that class, however, this is not the case. Be warned, and at all costs, avoid this Professor.
Great professor, shows up to class ready to teach. Willing to make various changes in the class based of student votes. There is a lot of group work but it's nice to talk to others and converse. I always enjoy coming to class. A lot of students are quick to judge and won't give him a fair chance.
At first, Professor Ortiz's instructions were unclear, but he made improvements. He is quick to respond to emails. Assignments were easy, and the textbook online only cost $4. Group work was significant, but if you had a bad group, he would switch you around. As long as you include all the required elements for assignments, you'll ace the class.
Professor Ortiz is a nice man, but stubborn and likes to play the victim. Lecture-heavy class & instructions were unclear. While assignments were easy to complete, the time constraints for group projects were tight. He asks for anonymous feedback on his classes, then doesn't take accountability. Jam vocabulary into assignments & you'll be fine.
All the negative reviews are bs, Pro.Ortiz is one of the easiest profs you could take. If there's any confusion on the expectations, he will go out of his way to explain so it makes sense. Everyone who apparently did bad in his class just doesn't have the basic skills to write an essay and are mad + is bias.
Do not listen to any of the reviews or anything anyone has ever listed for this professor. Probably one of the best professors I have ever gotten. He is such a good man and his teaching is really well done. Take him for any class, he will be a perfect professor.
He is very easy to ask for help Loves giving extra credit Makes everything easy to understand
I have really enjoyed this class. I would recommend taking this class if your want an A. He is specific with grading requirements, he is professional and understanding. We get to make up 2 quizzes, 2 speeches, and 2 assignments. It would be hard to get a bad grade in this class. I am looking forward to joining another one of his classes. 10/10
Sucks at answering questions, and does not seem to care about his students. So much work. He talks way too much, he is very passive-aggressive and gets off-topic all the time. The only thing I liked about the class was that he brought breakfast bars. That's it.
I love this man. I have taken three classes, dropped one, and aced two others. His public speaking class and intro to cinema were the ones I passed. He tries to help students and sticks his neck out for us. I will never have a professor so passionate and respectful. The hostile reviewers did the bare minimum and expected an A. 10/10!
Class is very straightforward, everything is on canvas so if you find it hard you suck at following basic instructions. He lets us use notecards and does not mark us down on being nervous at all. He is a lovely man, do not listen to a bad review they were salty that they missed the deadline to submit an the would open the assignment back up.
Prepare to be confused. His directions are extremely confusing, unclear, and mainly consist of learning targets. Many typos on assignments lead to more confusion. The assignments also usually have nothing to do with the weekly terms, but you are expected to tie them in somehow. He does give great feedback though and holds regular office hours.
ok, I'm being so real but the amount of awful reviews this guy has is literally false because this was one of the easiest teachers I ever had and he's super nice and he's not a tough grader at all. take him online tho but so nice.
Professor Ortiz is fantastic - very straightforward and understanding. Assignments are well-structured, with options to make up work. Unstuck ai was a big help for studying and prep. Definitely take this class if you want an easy A.
Where do I start with this. Ortiz makes it clear your focus should only be on his class. If you miss or don't understand something, expect him to sass you instead of teaching or being helpful. His grading is abysmal, knocking you for the littlest things and hard to keep up with when explaining anything. He needs to rework his teaching style asap.
Not a fan of the professor, his inconsistency on assignments and due dates was one of the many things that made this seemingly easy class difficult. His attitude towards his students is often negative and he becomes defensive if you try to stray from his curriculum. Probably best avoiding this professor. Good luck if you're taking this class…
he likes to play the victim if anyone disagrees with him. he also shames people in front of the class for asking questions. every assignment was titled "assignment 1" which made things confusing and when anyone asked about it he got upset. he also had several due dates for the same thing and got mad when people would ask for clarification.
Mr. Ortiz is an amazing professor! It's surprising to see so many negative reviews. He truly cares about his students and was my favorite professor.Theirs a great balance of homework and he listens to feedback on due dates and project outlines, making it stress free to manage the coursework. Highly recommend!
I was originally nervous about this class because of how many bad reviews there were, but the class was actually really great. Professor Ortiz gets back to emails quickly and is a fair grader. The only negative I found is that he does not always answer questions clearly and directly which can be confusing.
Was pretty easy, David was always super understanding and allowed you to present projects late. Easy A, to pass you just have to be decent at public speaking and participate and show effort. I will say he tried to impose his political opinions on students but use critical thinking and you'll be fine.
Was a great professor World Cinema, and it hadn't been taught since before the pandemic. Learned a lot and you can tell he loves what he does. He will request class participation but it is very easy and only helping you. There are two group projects, the midterm and final. There is also a weekly movie screening with group convo the next week.
The class was overall decent and I can tell that Professor Ortiz has a lot of passion for his work. However, he is terrible at communicating through Canvas, with many assignments having vague and unclear instructions. Also, asynchronous group projects do not work very well at all. I am hoping that he is better in person than online.
What an interesting professor. Be careful you don't stray too far left or right of his specific political opinion on any topic because he will extrapolate and assume many things about you. And make sure you talk in class but not too much. Needs to set clearer boundaries when managing class. He is very unprofessional in my opinion.
Hello, please read my review THOROUGHLY. Okay, so first off, he's VERY opinionated and isn't afraid to speak his mind. Be careful what you say in class because he will argue with you. Don't ask too many questions or he'll get defensive. He also avoids questions he doesn't want to answer and ignores the question, giving you an unhelpful answer.
David Ortiz is VERY opinionated. He will shame you and humiliate you in front of the whole class if you have differing opinions. He is horrible at communicating and explaining assignments, so you will be confused the whole quarter. He is very contradictory. I have brought up these concerns with the dean and the school admin is involved. Terrible.
I have mixed opinions on Professor Ortiz. I do quite enjoy the class discussions, even if he can get a bit opinionated and defensive, it's much more interesting than long lectures. Unfortunately, he is quite unclear in describing assignments and communicating expectations. He also pushed assignment dates around a lot, which was a bit confusing.
Ironically is not super great at communicating, at least online. Assignment instructions are often unclear & multiple pages on Canvas contradict each other for the same assignment. Textbook was pretty enjoyable and much shorter than most college textbooks which was nice. Also asynchronous group projects work terribly, very difficult to communicate.
Honestly didn't know what i expected taking another class from this professor. I had hope as this class was online, but sadly was met with disappointment and frustration. Was knocked heavy on assignments for minor reasons and was given no chance for any explanation on some assignments. Retirement is a good idea!
So it's a year later and I find out my review is deleted? Run it back now. DO NOT READ REVIEWS EXCEPT MINE. If ur RS dont skip/be late bc it's not good looks. If you dont wanna talk, dont take the class, easy. An EASY A if u try. Never clear grading criteria but know if u ask too many questions he will literally blow up. LIKE BOOM.
