soc 46, 102 He's a TA. kinda cute, but a tough cookie. A little arrogant sometimes, but he will answer your Qs, but his response might confuse you more! Also tends to use a lot of profanity, though its never really aimed at a specific person, it can start to offend people... you'll be ok in his section, but try someone else if you can
He is a good TA...very easygoing, friendly, doesn't ever make you feel stupid...discussion is actually a discussion...he does not try to be an authority figure...really easygoing ...acts like a fellow student..
He's cool, but he's kinda hard. He's pretty full of himself--that gets kinda annoying at times but he's cool overall. His review for tests suck! They basically tell you to know everything. His review guide for the final was "apply these three general questions to all of the authors,,," not very helpful at all. Lectures get pretty wordy at times.
The professor was very funny, and made the class interesting. Lectures were far from boring, and he uses a lot of pop culture references. However, the class is VERY challenging. He eased up on the final, but midterm was ridiculous. A lot of effort can get you a B+, but I wouldn't count on an A. Would recommend if your GPA can afford the hit...
I really like this professor. He makes the class very exciting and he is very engaged into his lectures. Do take him if you can. An A is possible if you follow his assignments, come to class, and do the reading.
I really liked Dave as a teacher. He was very entertaining and engaged when lecturing. He makes you feel very comfortable to talk in class and does not be little you. I loved going to his class because lecture notes were good and the class was very interesting.
He is a cool lecturer. He is very enthusiastic and wants his students to engage in classroom discussions. He's helpful, but he goes way too fast when he lectures and it can get a bit boring. Overall, you can get a decent grade if you go to all his classes and listen, it's pretty easy.
The topic of this clss is pretty boring. I didn't learn all that much. But he is very enthusiastic and tries to be lively. He takes partipation too, FYI. So while it wsan't bad, this topic is just super dry as you would expect.
He is an incredibly enthusiastic and dynamic speaker! He explains topics in a way that is easily relatable and loves when his students participate and show interest in his class! Plus he has a totally adorable smile:) GREAT TEACHER!
David is one of the best lecturers I have ever encountered! He knows his material well, and finds a fun way to teach it to the class. He is easily approachable, and super lively! Essays were graded hard, but that's because he wants to help us become better writers! Also, he gives out extra credit towards the end of the quarter!
Master Instructor David throws an incredibly fun class. He is engaging and interesting. Just make sure to do ALL the assigned reading (there is quite a bit of it). You will want to attend class because it is a blast, but as an extra incentive he doesn't post most notes online. I wish he did, because that's how I study best, but it works.
Pros:Enthusiastic, passionate, mildy interesting. Cons:VERY arrogant, unhelpful, and rude. He disabled the email on smartsite so you can't get help from other students. He doesn't post ANY notes online. He doesn't respond to any e-mails. He got mad when we requested a midterm study guide. Discussion is also a joke. tries TOO hard to be cool.
He is very enthusiastic about the material he teaches but his expectations for this class are greatly exaggerated. This class does not even have a writing requirement and there is so much writing and reading required. There is no curve at all. Exam questions are very difficult and specific, topics are only glossed over in class . Not an easy class.
Took this class because I was truly interested and thought because of that I could get an A because I'd want to participate. I was WRONG. Sooo much reading and writing and TA's grade unreasonably harshly. Exams are very difficult and no study guides. No curve. No extra credit. Won't answer emails and no notes posted online. Do not recommend.
This is the first time I've ever felt compelled to rate a teacher. In brief, this class was terrible and should be avoided. The TAs graded the papers bizarrely harsh. Big reading load (and very boring readings at that). Doesn't post notes. Exams difficult (he says to skim the readings, but asks specific questions). Pompous and arrogant personality.
Dave is hilarious and will keep you interested in this course. When writing essays, definitely meet up with the T.A. before turning it in, it will help SO much. definitely recommend this course.
Dear god, avoid this guy like the plague. Horrible lecturer: goes too fast and then doesn't post slides. Gives TAs ridiculously high levels of free reign. Uses class to force his otherwise worthless theme-park dissertation upon unsuspecting students who wanted to learn about pop culture. Also beware of the thousands of pages of boring readings
Dave's class is a little challenging and he definitely goes a little overboard with the readings. He also recycles material a little bit. But he's a good lecturer and extremely funny guy. If you take the class you'll warm up to him. In all, he does a really great job synthesizing the whole course.
AVOID AT ALL COST!! The TA graded the papers bizarrely harsh. Big reading load (and very boring readings at that). Doesn't post notes/slides. Exams difficult 20 questions worth 30% of your grade. He is boring and their is no curve what so ever, even if half the class fails.
This professor makes class so fun and entertaining I actually look forward to coming to class. He knows what he is talking about and has a great time teaching it. Highly recommended.
Literally the best teacher ever. He is so funny and makes every class interesting. BEST teacher at Davis I have had so far. He makes sure that everyone understands the material and is really good at explaining, especially if you go to office hours or ask questions in class. Every test and midterm is open note but you still need to study hard.
lots of reading. Had a 10 pg ethnography +field research. More difficult. Multiple choice is difficult too.Sort of wordy. Make sure you read abstract/conclusion well. he's very nice and knowledgable with the topic and essay. will help you to the best of his abilities. Definitely recommend him if you want to learn and laugh in class.
I really enjoyed taking his classes! I also took him for SOC132 and got an A- in both of his classes. He is not an easy teacher, but he really loves to teach and it shows. His tests are hard, the class average was a D for the midterm, but he curves his tests. I definitely recommend taking his classes!
Dave is a great guy and one of those rare profs who is passionate about teaching. Pros: He makes lectures fascinating and often hilarious. He is very friendly during office hours! Exams are open-note. No textbooks needed so $0 spent! Cons: Difficult midterms. Be prepared to do lots of reading! Lecture slides not posted online. Study guides vague.
I'm dying in this class! His exams are really hard and he assigns a lot of readings. More than I've ever had in any other class and they are beyond boring. It's just too much for the little time we have.
Took him for a freshman seminar on American Theme Parks. Was a very interesting class and had really great discussions. David is really passionate about this topic and we watched videos on the topic. Really great class.
While this test was definitely too hard for a lower division GE, he is passionate about the subject matter and is extremely engaging. Take if you are prepared for a slight GPA hit (not too bad if you read and go to lecture) but want a great class experience
I took Dave's freshman seminar. It was a great class! He showed a lot of care and even brought us snacks everyday. It was very doable for a pass/no pass class!
Class was not very well taught and lacked scholarly insights. He has also not published good papers himself but mostly has 1-page encyclopedia pieces. Class assignments were easy.
One of the best professors, and best classes I have ever taken. Could not recommend him higher. Tip: record the lectures (notability on my ipad was my life saver). Make sure you keep up with the readings, or the midterms and finals will be a roughhh time.
I didn't like this professor. He is enthusiastic but talks super-fast, basically yelling through the whole class and you better take notes! If I missed something, he was not helpful. His tests - mainly the final - were very hard with essay type questions and tricky multiple choice. There is no opportunity to discuss unclear concepts with him.
Dave is fabulous. A flibbertijibbet! A will-o'-the wisp! A clown!
I took SOC 122 with him over summer and intentionally looked for him the following Fall for SOC 125. He is very enthusiastic and engaging, which makes you care about paying attention because he cares about teaching you. He always assigns a paper, which is long and tedious, but he can help with whatever questions and concerns you have. He is great!
I learned SO much from this class, but second time taking him and still tough. Make sure to go to every class because he takes attendance in form of group work. He talks really fast, but doesn't mind if you ask to repeat itslow down (bring laptop for notes). He is seriously hilarious and lectures never get boring which helped a lot. GREAT PROF.
I honestly had zero interest in the topic of this class but David made this my favorite class I've ever taken at UC Davis. I've met with him outside of class and it was so relaxed - probably the most relaxed conversation I've ever had with a professor at UC Davis! I would 100% recommend this professor to anyone else.
I have to say Dave is one of my favorite teachers at UCD. His tests are relatively difficult, but he's super enthusiastic and interesting to the point where I enjoyed coming to lecture. Makes you interested in sociology & even though I took it as a GE I learned a lot. Would recommend!!
David is one of those professors that really makes you work for a good grade. When I get my diploma I will REALLY feel like I earned it thanks to him. But that's a small price to pay for having such an enthusiastic, passionate, interesting, relatable yet respectable teacher. Try your hardest, and he will do everything he can to help you succeed.
David is inspirational and loves what he does. He has an understanding of the subject matter that makes it easy to portray to students. You just have to be able to keep up! Taking notes is necessary but he is easy to listen to because he is so enthusiastic about teaching the class.
David is an awesome professor who just rocks. He is the most passionate professor I've had, and because of this, his lectures are amazing. He is very down to earth and has a great attitude. The class is definitely intense in terms of pace and rigor. There are two longer papers (5 pages each), three short papers (2 pages each) and a final.
Loved his lectures because he's enthusiastic about the material and seeing other students engaged in it as well. I went to my TA a lot to get help on the essays but we got to choose our own topics so it was enjoyable even doing the papers and readings. Its a great intro to what is so great about sociology and how it connects to real life
He was hilarious every lecture, and made EVERYONE laugh. I went in not caring at all for sociology but he made it fun and interesting. If I was better at writing essays It would have been an easy A.
He's very entertaining and super into his lectures, however you have to come to class otherwise you'll miss things and won't get participation credit. Was a relatively easy class and I was able to argue for an A- when I received a B plus. He definitely should be hired as a full time professor! He showed up in a Captin America suit the first day!
The instructor is not the best. So take the class with someone else unless you want a disorganized and easy class, where you hardly learn anything.
Dr.O is an amazing professor. While the class and material is sometimes difficult to grasp, he always welcomes questions and is willing to go over more difficult ideas in depth. The material is super interesting and he brings in his own humor and entertaining visuals to help make things more clear. A good amount of writing, but nothing too crazy.
Truly an inspirational and amazing individual. Lecture power points are basically nothing. They are basically empty slides with some words and pictures. There is basically no way to get the needed materials to do well on the weekly quizzes. Talks too fast. Avoid if you cannot just sit there and absorb the material.
Readings are outrageously long. Expect group discussions every class meeting. If you miss class, do not expect to make up for the missed materials because the notes are not accessible outside of lecture. Talks extremely fast. Quizzes every week. Very flamboyant personality
Very enthusiastic, hilarious, and simplifies the terminologies and concepts. Discussion is mandatory, missing it will affect your participation grade. Dont miss class, not all the information are on the slides. Scantron midterm and final, 2 research paper assignments that build off on each other. One required textbook. Overall, i recommend.
I enjoyed going to his class because it was super entertaining and interesting. However, his tests are super specific to the reading. Attendance to class and discussion are mandatory. This class isnt an easy A.
Absolutely loved him! He is hilarious and you can tell he is passionate about sociology and loves to teach. This is a class that requires you to go everyday if you want an A/B but I didn't really mind because LECTURES. He somehow made lectures on industrialization fun?? I am taking him again next quarter.
This is the first quarter he's switched to a team-based approach, apparently. Well. He's super disorganized. He doesn't understand canvas. Having to show up to class everyday for a team quiz & a team assignment is really annoying. Can't afford to skip any classes or sections. Readings are 1 hr+ each 2 days. Really stressed me out.
I'm really conflicted on this review. On one hand David is a hilarious and enthusiastic educator who picked great articles for us to read. On the other hand he used team base learning which I was not a big fan of. Also, his TA Chris was a super tough grader on both team based assignments and the final paper. Don't take this class if you want an A.
Dr. O utilized team based learning, which was quite different from my previous courses taken with him. The course would have been so much better if he lectured more instead of team learning, which I didn't think was as effective. Dr. O is one of the best, if not the best, lecturers/professors I've had here at Davis. You will work for your grade!
I took Dr. O for SOC46A and SOC120 last quarter (Winter 17) and now am taking SOC135 with them this quarter. Literally my favorite professor at UC Davis, I am taking SOC135 specifically because Dr. O is teaching it. Could not recommend their classes more, if you are a SOC major then you should definitely take classes with Dr. O
This is a team-based learning course where you will have 3-4 teammates. Quizzes due on canvas before every class. There are two papers (4-6 pages each double spaced), midterm, final, and a BUNCH of participatory assignments (always in class/discussion). Not an easy A as grading is TOUGH, don't expect one (work for it). Dr. O is a great professor!
It's a shame Dr. O adapted to the style of group based learning. He's a great lecturer and you will laugh throughout the quarter. However, the pace of his lectures and class as a whole does not match the dynamic of group based. As someone who has taken him prior to SOC120 it really seemed to hold him back as a professor.
Dont be fooled by his self serving enthusiasm, Davids classes are uninteresting, tedious and straight form the book. Get ready to regurgitate endless amounts of slides and do rushed, mindless teamwork activities. Avoid.
Dr. O is one of my favorite professors at UC Davis. I took him for SOC1 and SOC 46a. His lectures are engaging (even with dry material), his expectations of you are clear and reasonable, and his class very organized. His tests and assignments are tough, but fair. Expect to put in the work for your grade.
Cool guy. Tough class.
Dr. O is an incredibly disrespectful and condescending teacher. I find his need to tell students that if they don't like his personality to drop the class rude and uncalled for considering some of us cannot drop due to tight schedules and that should not be criteria for dropping he talks down to students and we are uncomfortable asking questions.
Dr. O is a great lecturer, very engaging and funny. Their class is difficult, if you don't show up to class you will miss out on a lot because everything isn't on the lecture slides. The whole time I took notes, literally never took a break. The exams are hard, but you get a study guide. You have to work for your grade, but it wasn't awful.
Great lecturer but is an extremely hard grader.
Dr. O is very enthusiastic but you have to put in a lot of effort and guess what sometimes that won't even get you an A or B. I liked the class from the very beginning but god that first midterm was rough.
IF you skip class, you will NOT pass his class. Whole class was based on teamwork, which sucked! Dr. O has the potential to be an amazing teacher but his big ego does get in the way of it. Tough grader. I don't even think anyone in the class got an A, handful probably got a B.
I've taken 4 classes by Dr. O in my 2 years at UCD. He is by far my favorite because of their enthusiasm & flamboyant personality. Lectures are very straight forward and easy to understand. This class was not TBL for some reason but there were only essays for midterm/final. Dr. O expects you to work for your grade but it's nothing dreadful.
A very easy class but a poor lecturer.
Dude is too much.
A lot of reading for one person to handle you will need a buddy system. Missing one day is a lot. Although he is very funny his curriculum is overboard, a great person but as a teacher, he's not to hard on you. just get ready to work
LOUD! talks so fast you can barely keep up in lectures. He expects a lot from you. very unrealistic about homework load. Get ready to read 500 plus pages a week
Last class I am taking with Dr. O. Woo hoo!
Dr. O changed their class so that it is no longer TBL, but they still have group work for attendance and it's graded. We only had one exam (the final), for midterms we had 2 papers and they were a minimum of 5 pages each. Dr. O is a difficult grader and they make you work for your grade. They say you have to do the reading but I didn't and passed.
Would not recommend taking this professor, avoid! If you need this class for any reason your better off waiting to take it with anyone else because he has an unrealistic workload expectation, just reads off a paper in lecture, requires you to do trivial group work in every class and assigns work that overlaps very little with lecture and readings.
If you take a class with Dr. O, be prepared to put the work in and earn your grade (no easy As). You will not be able to BS your way through the class. I've taken four classes (three upper and one lower division). Dr. O's classes aren't nearly as bad/hard as some of these reviews might suggest. This is UC Davis right? Be prepared to work hard!
Dr.O is my favorite lecturer so far. Yes, his class requires a lot more reading than a normal GE class but it is also a 5 unit course. There are multiple assignments required for this class but he's very clear on what to do. Readings are crucial. He's very passionate about the subject and is really funny. His lectures are great and meets 2x a week
Dr. O has so much potential to be an amazing professor but he is lacking in some critical ways; such as, how he speaks to his students, his inflexibility, and at times his expectations. I remember in my class he once called a student out for accidentally using a gender-specific pronoun - it was too harsh. I would avoid him if possible
Dr. O is alright. He's funny & selects interesting articles to read but his class expectations are ridiculous. he has us handwrite our notes based on what he is saying because his slides have 3 words on them. Its almost impossible to write everything down because he talks so fast then gets mad when students ask him to repeat what he said. Dont take
Dr. O is my favorite lecturer at UCD, but he really makes you work for your grade. He didn't use a textbook, but all of his assigned readings were helpful and not horribly long. He makes lectures interesting, and it's definitely mandatory that you go and be ready to write because he doesn't post extensive slides. Take him if you have the chance!
Dr. O was a very entertaining lecturer and I was able to focus the full 2 hour lectures. Lots of self deprecating humor. Very loud! (in a good way). His strict phone policy is annoying, I don't need someone looking over my shoulder if I wanna check a text message. Also you couldn't use gendered pronouns which was weird. But I still learned a lot.
Professor O is has great entertaining lectures with lots of cool stories but, the slides have very few words on them. This making attendance matter and need to basically write down everything. The tests are very unclear and confusing and is big when it comes to plagiarism. Threatens constantly about reporting students to SJA.
Dr. O was very interesting. He gets offended if you ask a question he's already answered which is weird. Overall he was a great lecturer and kept you engaged! No electronics in class. Midterm, final, term paper is most of your grade.
Dr. O is a tough grader! You're expected to write down everything he says in class because his slides got only a couple of words. You'll put your maximum effort and won't end up with what you deserve. Try to avoid him in all ways.
I really like this professor. His lectures are so engaging and he really makes you see life differently. His readings aren't super long but there are readings everyday after class but if you keep up, you won't fall behind. He offers a lot of support if you do. Great lecturer. Would take another class with him if I could!
I have never experienced a ruder, more condescending professor. I would never take a class with him again and would not recommend that any of my friends take one of his classes. He will literally ask for course feedback, and then humiliate whoever replies by insinuating that they are incompetent or stupid. Would not recommend.
I'm at a loss for this professor's complete lack of professionalism. He has cultivated a hostile learning environment through his pompous and demeaning interactions with students. His inability to communicate respectfully and effectively in a class about social relationships class is both sad and ironic, do not waste your time with this professor.
This Professor put me on the spot in class because I didn't pay attention to his lecture and told me to leave if I didn't want to pay attention. He has an ego and self entitlement to want his students to show him respect without him actually earning that respect. I would not recommend taking him again
Dr. O is a fantastic lecturer, but the tests are very hard. They also do not let you use laptops to take notes so if that is your style, I would take the class with someone else. You will be engaged, but you probably won't get the grades you expect from the effort you give.
Professor Orzechowicz at times was an interesting lecturer. My issue was the inherent lack of respect for students when he demanded the utmost respect for us. He treated the class like we were children and if someone dare make a peep he would call them out and yell at them, or make them see him after class. Rude and unprofessional.
I am amazed at how many average reviews he's received because I believe he is Phenomenal! He makes sure his lectures are structured, understandable, and interesting for students as he presents the material. He uses videos, pictures, and enthusiasm. I love him for it. He's also very accessible outside class time with complete undivided attention.
I didn't have the same experience as other students mainly because it was a different course. Dr. O was very entertaining and made lecture bearable (work & employment). You have to be prepared for the heavy reading though and some can be dense. As long as you put in work, you'll get a B and up. He is a hard grader but he cares about his students.
probably one of the worst professors at davis, readings are unnecessarily complicated and long, professor is rude to students and super strict about phone usage for no reason. difficult tests (no study guide) and doesn't explain how to do papers (just tells you to read the prompt again even if it doesn't answer your question), AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!!
Dr. O is the only professor I ever had where he can make the whole class laugh. He could be a comedian. His lectures are really funny if you understand his sense of humor. However, he doesn't write all his thoughts on the slides, you need to pay attention to what he says in lecture. I also didn't like discussions, where we just go over the readings
There is a reason he is a lecturer and not a professor. He seems to show enthusiasm about teaching his class but can get irritated with questions from his own students, and hes not afraid to make you sound stupid in front of the entire class. Avoid at all costs. His class is literally a waste of my tuition dollars.
Dr. O is a very funny and intriguing professor. However, you have to be sure to write down all that he says as his lecture sides only have a few words yet the tests are verbatim to his lectures. His class is based heavily on the two exams and he is not afraid of calling students out for speaking or pulling out their phone. Dr. O can be rude.
Dr. O is not tite. He frequently used humor that perpetuated problematic themes (surprising for a sociology prof) and was blatantly rude to students during lecture when they asked a question. It was obvious he put little effort into his preparation for lectures. Easy enough prof, but would not take again bc I often found myself agitated in class.
My favorite teacher so far. His lectures are very clear and the tests are more lecture based than readings. He doesnt require a textbook because he understands college expenses. Assignments are not bad at all. We only had 4. Grading was not curved for my class . I was scared to take him because of these reviews but hes not bad
I enjoyed attending lectures and was never bored. Tests were challenging, but not impossible if you study the material exactly. There were four brief writing assignments. Discussions felt lackluster compared to the rest of class because they only regurgitated lecture and reading material. Dr. O does not treat stupid questions kindly so be careful.
Do not take this class. I took it bc I thought it would be 'easy-breezy', alas, it was not. He has us do so so many readings. There are 2 midterm essays and 1 final.
Grades very hard & very subjectively. I didn't think the class would be easy but I didn't know it would be so incredibly difficult. The professor is unhinged and moody. Totally not appropriate for this level of education. His expectations are way too high for the class. This class is a GPA destroyer. Don't do it.
Dr. O was always a very nice and enthusiastic professor. He liked to spark conversation, but you should definitely watch what you say and really give it some thought, to put it gently. He was very accommodating during the COVID pandemic and BLM protests. I definitely would take him again.
One of the most interesting classes I've taken. Bases his sociology class on coffee! Class was a bit hard but interesting which made me more motivated to learn. His class is very team-based heavy. Group works (4-5 ppl) every class and turn in right after class. Prof O is a good prof. Funny and very blunt lol. Pushes and makes you earn it.
Orzechowicz is one of my favorite professors at Davis. He is extremely caring and super engaging. The class was never a bore! What he talks about during lectures you won't be able to get anywhere else so don't skip class. There is only a midterm, final, and two essays. The midterm was 300 points so study hard! He's amazing and highly recommend.
Dr. O was very accomodating this quarter during the pandemic and the course material was so interesting. He gives you some "vacation weeks" that you can take that exempts you from assignments that week too. That might just be for the pandemic tho. And during election week when anxiety was high, he canceled class and assignments as well.
Dr. O was hands down the worst professor I've ever taken. He was pejorative, combative, and completely inaccessible to students. All of his lectures were recorded and the only chance you got to talk to him was at office hours. If you did go to talk to him there he made you feel like an idiot and was completely unhelpful. Do not take his classes
You will have readings and they will be discussed as a group every week. Weekly portfolios, doesn't matter the length however always ask your TA first. Midterm and Final around 1200 words. Loved the class and was able to learn a lot.
Dr. O was able to explain a lot of concepts really well and it wasn't hard to pay attention and be interested in his class. There was quite a bit of work each week but most of that consisted of watching lecture videos since this was online. There was a decent amount of work for the class and there were 2, relatively short, papers for the class.
The Professor is nice and the lectures are very interesting but the grading is tough. Its done mostly by the TAs and for an intro class the grading is tough.
Dr. O takes great care to make sure you are guiding your studying and is good at explaining and highlighting important concepts . Overall, the structure of the class is fair and logical and the assignments are not restrictive. I appreciate knowing exactly what to expect, a good grade is definitely accessible.
I took this professor twice. Class is interesting. As long as you do the readings, the papers are easy to write.
Favorite professor so far. He takes interest in student and will make any accommodation to help students His lectures are interesting and he's very funny. Essays are easy if you read and talk to TAs. I would highly recommend staying for office hours as its super enlightening to what was discussed in lecture. 11/10 i would take again just for fun!
3 essays to write, graded kind of harshly depending on TA. very lively lecturer, not boring! do NOT get caught on your phone in class he will embarrass you. very important to understand the material because the essays are all about explaining and applying concepts. very interesting topic, good as a GE!
Super flexible with deadlines, great lecturer. The class has a good balance of lecture and group work/discussion. There's a good amount of reading to prepare for every class and you have to have a good notetaking style to succeed (not all the information is on the slides).
One of my favorite professors at Davis. He is extremely considerate of everyone’s identities and opinions and makes lectures interesting and lively. There is group collaboration during lectures which somewhat make attendance mandatory. Grading is mostly depending on TA and homework is not too heavy.
Literally the strictest grader I have ever had. Class average for the first exam was a 66%, and he said he would only curve if we "put more effort into the next assignments." Expects you to treat this class like your top priority, as if we don't have other classes to focus on. Beyond unrealistic expectations..please avoid.
Dr. O is by far the best professor I have ever had!!! Lectures are clear and engaging, he makes material accessible for students to understand. He is obviously very passionate about his work and that translates to an incredible class where I learned a lot without feeling too stressed. Great foundational learning for any other soc classes in future!
Dr O was hands down the worst professor I had. His is condescending, abusive and hateful. He probably wrote all the positive ratings on here. That's how manipulative and corrupt he is.
His lectures are short. His readings are long, and use derogatory and old fashioned language. He complains about not making it in the acting business and being stuck in a job he hates while teaching. His assignment are tedious and time consuming. He could be more creative but chooses to make everything as hard as they can. I would stay away.
Dr. O's lectures were incredibly interesting and engaging - even though they were 3 hours long and the material was dense! Be prepared to read (~20 pages/week), discuss with others during class, and write (3 1250-word essays + 2 500-word documentary reflections), but also be prepared to be infected by Dr. O's enthusiasm and passion for sociology.
To learn a lot, be challenged to think outside the box, and laugh along the way, take his classes. I've taken him twice and don't regret it. His exams are difficult and papers may be scrutinized. He pushes his students to demonstrate actual comprehension of the materials as shown through sound arguments and evidence. I wish he taught more classes.
