He really knows his stuff and takes time to answer questions. tests are hard tho
take his classes, especially ones with field trips, he buys the beer!
nice, takes time to answer any questions, but tests are difficult
lectures are very informative and notes are given online
Nice guy, boring class, very hard tests
The Best professor at UCD! Go to his class just for the heck of it.
Great teacher...very knowledgable and fun classes.
always willing to answer any questions you may have, illustrates concepts very well with slides, video, etc. Not much reading and he posts notes online
Tests are pretty hard, but a good class
No Comments
Great class, tests are easy if you study the notes.
great teacher, one of the best i have had here! but the tests are hard.
EXCELLENT teacher and course.
Gives excellent explanations, very fair tests. Makes rocks interesting!
He makes Geology intresting, take this class and you will learn something.
The best professor Ive had so far. Tests are mostly memorization but not too bad.
good teacher, makes me want to be a geology major!
one of the best professors i've ever had. makes even non science majors like science and geology
great professor and course
The best teacher i've had at UCD. His lectures are interesting and he explains concepts well. The tests are easy multiple choice as long as you follow his study tips. The term paper is a pain but worth the writing credit you get for the course.
great teacher, easy tests, FUN class if you just need a break from the grueling classes and all the hard work. Would definitely recommend.
Fun class and you learn a lot. Easy if you study the lecture notes that are available online. He knows the material really well and is always happy to explain things and answer questions. Great professor.
Totally Geology, Dude!! Density example was the best. Total soap opera star!! for sure dude!
Very good teacher and class, he shows lots of movies too! Any class of his is bound to be good.
Treats students with respect. Makes content fun to learn. Great class to fill an elective or take a break from intense regime. Tests have no trick questions but do weed out those who did not put good study effort in. Highly recommend.
easy and fun
He is one of the best @ Davis. He is extremely helpful and open for questions at all times. His tests are a little tricky at times but very easy if you study the lecture notes. Overall very easy and interesting. Recommend!
Good lectures, easy to follow with examples, but attend!! Tests were fair but hard, overall good class!
This dude is cool and knows how to teach.
An AWESOME professor. I actually enjoyed this class a lot. He turned boring material into something that's really exciting. Go to lecture though because that's what he uses when he makes the midterm and final. A fair grader and always willing to answer &#
One of the best professors I've ever had. If he doesn't know a question of yours, he goes and finds it out for you the next day. His lectures are great and he's always interacting with the class. Definetely a recommend.
Very energetic, fun teacher. Taught the information well and made it very easy to understand. I would recommend Osleger to all students looking to take a Geology course.
Not sure about classes for GEL majors, but 25 and 36 were rediculously easy. He's a quality professor, but the assumed level of understanding is below anyone with a passing knowledge of science or geology (or astronomy in the case of 36).
David Osleger is the man. I didn't really like geology enough to rate the course, but damn was Osleger great. He is nice, funny, and will genuinely work with you during office hours!
This guy is the greatest professor, no wait, MAN, on the entire planet. No wait, universe. He is beyond awesome. Greatest teacher ever, really energetic, fun, helpful, and oh, I could go on for days. David Osleger. Just hearing his name makes mesmile
GREAT teacher, easy on the eyes, explains clearly, awesome slides. I took geo of national parks and now geo of California and they are both awesome, makes you want to get into the outdoors! Tests are fair, but can be tricky, grades on a curve!
Fun class. Lots of good pictures and the print out notes make this class freakishly easy. Go to class and study the reccomended material before the tests because questions can be confusing.
he looks like a movie star! He's awesome, interesting lectures, great personality, average easiness on the tests.. notes online.. but go to lecture for pictures.
This guy is awesome... his lectures are easy to understand and very interesting. He gives visuals for everything, and his exams are a breeze if you study (he's an easy grader too). Even if you don't like geology, definitely check this guy out!
Dude, this guy is my idol. He makes everything so clear and so fun to learn. He has to be the only guy in the world who can make socks and sandals look cool. I would take as many classes with him as possible.
Such an awesome prof. Is really clear, has notes available online, and the tests are totally doable if you go to class and study the notes. Really fun classes. I'm going to follow him around for a while...
I thought Gel36 would be a lot easier of a class from what I heard. Overall though, he was a good teacher who explained things well. You still have to study for the midterm and final if you want to do well. There's also a term paper you have to write.
The professor is a cool guy overall, but this class is rediculously impossible. All of the questions on the tests are so random and it's nearly impossible to find the right answer. AVOID this class if you value your GPA!!!
He is a wonderful teacher. His class is so interesting and he has beautiful pictures in all his lectures. The tests are multiple choice. He always puts his notes online. And he makes an effort to answer everyone's questions in class.
He is soooo cute and blonde!!!! Maybe he will review this JSR paper for me....
Awesome teacher, very helpful and nice. Easy class. Interesting lectures. All notes posted online. He gives a great curve. Easy to get an A. Also, he's a cutie!
Awesome teacher, awesome class. He tries to make everything as clear as possible, and fills his classes every time. He must be good.
This guy is gorgeous. And he makes geology actually seem like something people should care about. Even if you don't like science take this class just to gaze at him
very organized and easily approachable. Even takes time during class to answer questions. Tests are VERY hard so studying is a must.
Probably the best speaker I have ever heard. He can stand in front of a class with no notes in hand and give the most amazing lecture about rocks. TAKE ANY OF HIS CLASSES...
awesome professor, very helpful, very clear, very organized. TA's can suck though, and will grade essays really subjectively. tests are not too bad if you do the reading and study, its a pain to cram for but its manageable. didnt study until the night before and got B's on exams.
Very clear in his lectures and very well organized. He provides lecture notes for students so we didn't have to take any notes during the lecture other than listening. Test are somewhat diffilcult but if you attend the lecture and study a little, there should not be any problems.
Osleger is an excellent professor who consistently goes above and beyond the call of duty. He encourages questions, provides clear answers, and is very organized. Furthermore, he stresses the understanding of concepts rather than obscure trivia, so all in all, he is a very fair professor.
you don't have to take notes in this class. just print them out for studying before exams. it's easier to go to class and listen to lectures than to not go to class and have to guess what's gonna be on the exam and then have to cram the night before. the class is easy. what sucks is the discussion.
Took him last year and just have to reinforce: best teacher at UC Davis. If you gave him less than 5's down the board, there's something wrong with you.
Interesting and fiarly easy.
Excelent lecturer. Lecture notes available online. Go to lectures and you only need to review a little bit before the tests. Testsare straightforward, no tricks. Wants his students to do well, very easy to talk to. Definately taking him again.
Oh, National Parks. Material was interesting and featured awesome slide shows. Test? WAY too difficult for a 2-unit class. Tone it down a notch, Dave.
By far the best prof at Davis! Very approachable, he encourages questions, notes are online. If you do poorly on the test, go talk to him and he will help you out! I would take more classes with him.
THis teacher is by far the best one yet. He makes sure that everyone is on the same page by encouraging questions. Very good professor will take classes from him again.
Boring Professor even tho he is quite handsome. Grades were based on points so if you did well on your discussion and two tests, you will pass. Does not seem like he has a passion for Geology. If you want to take Geo 1, I suggest Kenneth Verosub. Great Professor.
Osleger is one of the best teachers I've had at Davis. His lectures are really clear and it's obvious he loves what he teaches. He makes learning about rocks very interesting! His exams are a bit tricky, but they are fair. If you study and don't cut class, you will do fine. MT+Final = full grade.
Prof. Osleger is a good teacher. His tests are easy if you read the notes and come to class. He is also very interesting, eventhough his class can get boring at times.
Awesome professor! His tests were easy if you went over the notes thouroughly. Kind of nice that the book wasn't necessary. Very good prof. if you want a kick back class where you'll actually leave knowing more than you came in with
He goes into a lot of details about rocks, which can get quite boring. His test are pretty tricky but it wouldn't be too hard if you go to every class and pay attention, which is actually pretty difficult unless you get off on learning about rocks. Not an easy A at all if you have no interest in learning about geology.
Nice guy and all...but he's boring!!

This was a good class, and the teacher made very good study guides for what to look for on exams.
Class is fun and easy. Osleger is a badass prof!

It's David Osleger :-)
He is an awesome professor, I'd take other classes just because he's teaching them.

BEST PROFESSOR IN DAVIS!, makes lectures very interesting with powerpoint, tests are incredibly fair just go over the study guide, no need for a textbook. and he quarterbacked for Joe Montana, doesn't get much better than that!
I really don't understand why everyone loves this guy so much, I think he's incredibly boring! He always says how you can't possibly do well in his class if you don't go to lecture, but you definitely can, just read the notes and know the terms! Very boring, but pretty easy!
seems like an easy class at first w/clear lectures and notes online, but his tests are tricky and you really have to know your stuff. fortunately most of the material is fairly interesting (as far as geology goes) so studying for it is not bad. great guy and engaging lecturer. go check out his facebook fanclub group haha
Good teacher. Gives you all the lecture notes before class. His multiple choice were a little harder than I expected, just make sure you know the material.
a wonderful teacher.. everything that comes out of his mouth is as clear as water....... his class can be easy if you are interested in geology....overall an excellent teacher
I think I opened the book once and still got an A. Studying from the notes he gives you was enough. I went to all the lectures and while they were a little boring, he goes over something multiple times, not to the point where it's repetetive but to where you really understand it. Studying is then like a refresher on what you already know. V.v. good
GREAT PROFESSOR! I took his class on national parks and i loved it. He almost made me want to be a geology major. His tests are fair-read the notes! Everything you need to know is there! He really encourages questions in class and always starts the day with a "hey gang" haha.
His tests are actually kind of hard. His (online) lectures notes help a lot. The class would have been easier if my TA wasn't such a meanie. I voiced my concerns to him about her, and he totally understood. He said he would give her students more points. He's a really nice, understanding guy.
Osleger is a great professor. His lectures are all interesting and easy to understand, though his tests can be a bit tricky. If you go to class, or even just read the notes he provides, you can get at least a B.
Its alot of fun, he is a good teacher and it is kind of an easy class, I never look at my watch during the class.
One of the best at UCD. Funny, helpful, and very interesting, makes lectures interesting and made me who had no interest in geology take more classes.
He is good at explaining stuff and teaches you a lot but just because it is a 2unit course doesn't mean that it is easy either. You will still need to read the book and study a lot to do well. Easy to get a B but hard to get an A is my opinion.
If you leave Davis without taking a class with Dave, you've truly missed out. He's a very funny, down-to-earth guy, and is extremely helpful and approachable. You might decide to change your major after one class with him. Very highly recommended.
Awesome professor! Lectures & powerpoints were very easy to understand. It's a shame the other professor was in charge of essays and tests ('cause they sucked!)
i never went to lecture but i still have a good grade by just going to the discussion and studying the lecture notes online. my ta was cool and when i went to lecture he was interesting and took the time to answer any questions. if i take another gel course again i will make sure its with osleger.
Dave is the man. Period. Addresses the class "Hey gang". I didn't know how to feel about geology before Dave, but he made me want to major in it. Extremely helpful, very knowledgable, both classes were interesting. Study notes, go to class (you'll want to), and you'll be fine. I saw him riding his bike and almost fell off mine from excitement, he's
Gotta love this prof.
Once again, Dave was awesome. If you haven't taken a class from him, do it. This is my third, and I'm not even a Geology major. Helpful, clear, and he cares whether you are learning the stuff. Midterm is really easy, final was slightly less so, but still pretty easy as long as you study the notes. Class was pretty straightforward.
You need to take a class with him. Period.
this guy is NICE! and u can tell that he really likes what hes doing. the grade is just a midterm, final, and labs. labs are ok, but the midterm and final were really easy to study for. just read the online notes, they arent that long really. i owe this guy!
This proff is the****, knows how to teach and is a straight badass. OOhhhraa
does anyone else think this class is hard? its not as easy as rated here! tests are tricky even though i attend class, take notes, and study. he makes it sound like the tests will be really really easy, so dont underestimate!
I too thought his tests were pretty difficult. Personally I found the class very interesting, but the tests were challenging! But he is a very nice and easy going guy.
Best teacher at Davis. Take any class he offers. Notes online. Makes lectures fun. Dont need to take any notes in class just go and listen.
This guy was hella laid back and super easy
national parks, woohoo! seriously one of the best profs at davis. Lectures are interesting and the notes he gives you are helpful (i would still go to lecture though) Tests are actually a little more diff than you might think but an A is totally doable. You learn about some pretty amazing places
Great Professor! Clearly passionate about topic!
Really nice guy. Very passionate about the subject. However, the topics were pretty boring at times.
Very clear and is the most willing professors I've ever had...by far my favorite prof from the classes I've taken so far. Goes out of his way to get to know you if you so much as introduce yourself or go to office hours. Interesting subject, and very useful information. Midterm and final only but he'll help you if you ask. Definitely recommend.
Wonderful professor, gets the message through. You don't even have to read the book, just look at the pictures for concepts you don't understand already. All notes are crystal clear, and if you study those, you're off to a solid A.
Professor Osleger is a fantastic teacher!!! He really knows and is passionate about the subject, which makes the class much more enjoyable for the students! He has a very relaxed style, which is nice, and his notes and lectures were interesting and easy to understand!! A great professor and a great class!!
What an awesome teacher. I wasn't particularly interested in geology until I took this class. Like other geology dept. teachers, he's just an awesome guy with a great sense of humor. HIGHLY recommended.
Dave is just THE most awesome professor at UCD. Has a great sense of humor, very lenient, and a wonderful guy to be around. Helpful, kind, and encouraging, he is the epitome of a perfect college professor. I highly recommend ANY of the courses he teaches, cause he's just someone you HAVE to get to know. A++ again, Dave, you're a wonderful guy!
Not a gelogy major but seriously thought about it after a couple of classes with this is professor. He is very knowledgeable, clear, fun. Great pictures used to convey ideas. Grades fairly. I looked forward to going to each class (and not because he was easy on the eyes.)
I had him for a freshman seminar. He's very helpful and understanding. Show's a lot of images in the powerpoints and tries to make unbelievably boring material a little more accessible (and he does a good job at it), I would definitely recommend him for any class he offers, great teacher!
A very good teacher, I felt that you needed to pull the material off the web ASAP and study it. If you studied, this was easy, if not... No papers, only midterm and final, so if you do bad on one, you need to do great on the other.
Professor Osleger (dave) is seriously the man. Awesome lecturer!! even though subject isn't always the most exciting at times, he makes it as interesting as possible! extremely helpful and friendly! really wants the students to do well! pretty easy if you put in the study time.
Only midterm and final exam.. makes it really difficult to get a good grade if you screw up. Would recommend only if you're a geo major.. lots of nerds screw up the curve in this class. Tests are mainly mult. choice plus 2 essays. Essays are not bad, but multiple choice is very difficult.. wordy and confusing. Don't take GEL 50 as an elective class
Fun and interesting class and great professor. He is a very nice guy and a great person to get to know. Grade is based on 1 midterm, discussion, paper, and final. MC tests are very wordy and tricky. Hard to fix your grade if you mess up on the first MT. I recommend you take your own notes even though he gives notes. Book was useless.
Excellent professor, may be my favorite at Davis. Extremely clear, willing to help, no need to take notes in class, all is provided. I would recommend this class I think above all others at Davis, it is easy, very enjoyable, and incredibly interesting. Just go to class with an open mind and you will do great.
Very good lecturer, interesting, humorous, and open to questions. You learn a lot in the class, but most of it is quite basic and easy...but Osleger makes it exciting. Very passionate about Geology, which is a plus. Tests and homework assignments are easy, gives you his own personal lecture notes. T.A.s are below caliber.
A superb professor. Only issue is the normalized curve, which means if everyone else is doing well because of his crystal clear lectures, you have to work and study even harder to get an A.
I don't get why people think this class is easy. It's NOT. Maybe it's easy for people who truly understand the concepts, but I found them extremely hard to grasp. I studied his notes front to back, outlined them myself, etc, and ended up with a D. I guess geology's just not my subject. Osleger seems like a cool guy though.
I found this class to be extremely difficult, especially for just 2 units. There are a lot of concepts to grasp and tons of geology majors to compete with. Only one midterm and one final, so it's hard to pull up your grade. Multiple choice is tricky and very hard. I wouldn't recommend this class unless you're a geology major.
Professor Osleger is really passionate about what he teaches, he also cares about his students understanding the material. He is willing to take time in class to clarify and simply topics. His notes are really clear and understandable. I would highly recommend this class. It's inspired me to get a geology minor.
I studies my butt off for his exams. He makes them really tricky (full of trap answers). I am science major and I gotten better grades in chem classes than his classes. He puts way too much excess info. in his notes.
Studying the lecture notes he gives out are sufficient for you to get a B. To get an A, you must attend class since some examples/slides are not covered in the lecture notes. He'll say skim thru the book, but YOU DON'T NEED IT. only 1 midterm, 1 final so falling behind is not a good idea. Discussions are boring but easy. Overall, easy A-/B+.
I agree with a comment below, don't take this class just for fun. It's deceptively not an easy two unit class. You actually have to work hard to get a good grade if your not too familiar with geology. The two tests are multiple choice but just memorizing the concepts doesn't work. Professor is nice and knowledgeable though.
The classes are easy so long as you print out the notes and go through the powerpoint slides online. Went to class just over 60% of the quarter and still got an 88 so putting in a little more effort can easily get you an A. He loves answering questions and wants you to succeed be it for his own benefit or yours. Had him for GEL 20 and 25
Professor Osleger presents the material as clearly as possible, is readily available to offer help, and encourages questions. The exams were pretty tough and required a good understanding of the material. However the curve was very, very generous.
I was never interested in geology until I took this class! Excellent professor, extremely helpful. Tests can be difficult, but they are fair if you go to lecture and study his study guides and notes (Super helpful!) I barely used the text book.
When talking about Prof. Osleger, I have nothing to complain!!!! His lectures are crystal clear and he's a very dedicated professor. His tests are not easy but very fair if you do your readings and studying. His tests are more of understanding the concepts rather than memorizing the exact words the notes said! And fyi, flashcards are useless!!!
Very attractive. His knowledge and enthusiasm for the subject makes him even better.
The best teacher I've had at Davis. Very helpful and the tests weren't that bad.
I was an IR major that graduated in 2006, and took Dr. Osleger's class in 2003. The fact that I'm taking the time to write about Dr. Osleger 7 years later should tell you how great a professor he is. Truly makes the subject fascinating and is a great, great guy. If you have the chance to take his Solar Systems class, do it! It is a MUST.
Dave is a great prof! He is very clear and really encourages questions by saying "Ya, good question" a lot. Very helpful. The class GEL25 is NOT a joke though; it's 2 units but the tests are not to be taken lightly. He curves the heck out of them but they r not the easiest. ***Study where the parks came from (lakes, mt.s, deserts, etc) in the past.
Best professor ever, really clear lecturing, great class, easy tests but felt like I learned a lot.
absolutely amazing. tests are very easy if you go to lecture and just listen. he gives you all the notes you need, so there is no need to try and scribble down what he's saying. just sit, listen, read his notes later and occasionally go through the book (on reserve, no need to buy it) and you will do just fine! :)learned a lot!
Really great teacher. He knows his stuff and genuinely wants to help each student understand. You can tell he loves what he is doing. Tests aren't too bad, just be sure to know the timeline of events. He loves to have you put things in order on exams.
Skipped a couple of lectures and still got a good grade. Make sure you print the notes offline and know what the say. If you go to class, he just repeats what is online, but more in depth.
Best professor I've had yet. Probably should have been an actor in a western.
LOVED THIS CLASS! Dave is a great professor and knows his stuff. He's very passionate about what he's teaching. Very approachable and friendly. Midterm and final are fair. Make sure you study timeline of events and understand concepts. This class was very interesting. Highly recommended.
Dave is a really good professor! He explains the material very clearly! Just go to his lectures and no need to buy the textbook. The exams are short, straight forward and easy. Just study his notes and you will get an easy A.
Easy-going guy, easy classes. I've had two with him and I'm probably taking a third. No need for a textbook, just make sure to print his notes.
Prof. Osleger is a pretty cool guy. He's very approachable and really cares about students. His curve is so generous you have to not try to fail. Posts all lectures after a week online although missing too many classes is not recommended. The hardest thing in this class would be the paper but if you put in effort you will get an A.
One of the easiest courses and professors I had freshman year. Dave has mastered the subject of cosmology, as far as he can, and easily teaches the students. His notes are the BEST, and you can print them online. Rarely any hw, no quizzes, just a midterm, final, and final research paper. His tests are mostly from notes, some from lecture.
I've had a crush on Osleger since my freshman year. I'm now a senior and have taken 3 of his classes I have no need for. Take his courses; you will learn a lot!
Good way of explaining things, no extra stressful work. Just go to class, and he gives you everything you need.
Great professor. Explains everything very well. You shouldn't have any problems getting a good grade in his class as long as you pay attention & attend lectures.
Very good teacher. Kept lectures interesting and understandable, and put detailed copies of his notes online. Very knowledgeable and was able to answer any question asked in lecture. Attendance is mandatory to discussion, where you do activities rather than discuss lecture/homework. The textbook isn't needed as his lectures and notes are so good.
Dave is an excellent lecturer. No textbook, but several articles. He posts his PP online a few days after lecture. Exams come from lectures- he gives several questions a few days before the exam, then gives 6 of them during the exam. Budget your time! Research project seems tough but fair-don't wait! Loved this class!
Dave is a great teacher. His tests are extremely fair; he doesn't like to trick you. Very straight forward. He is very approachable and will answer questions during lecture. His class really sparked my interest in Geology.
Dave is just a downright good guy. He's approachable, his lectures are always interesting, and he frequently stops and asks for questions, which is always nice. His tests are fair. Undoubtedly one of the best professors at UCD. If you have the opportunity to take one of his classes, do so!
Dave is a fantastic professor. I would gladly take a class with him again. Lectures are interesting and prepare you for the exams. Spend a few days studying beforehand and you will do great. The essay for this class is weird ("Make your own space mission"), but overall great class, great professor.
Go to class, you will do fine. He tests for understanding of the material, not your ability to take tests. Loves questions and hates monologue lectures. Painless GE.
Very straight forward and fair. Sometimes the concepts themselves are hard to grasp because he tests on the big picture rather than little details, but he is always at office hours and is extremely helpful. He wants you to succeed.
His lectures are very clear. He is good at explaining the large scale concepts in order to make the necessary connections to succeed on his tests. Exams are slightly challenging; studying is required, but there are no surprises. Nice man who clearly knows his subject very well. Plus, you will learn! Who'd have thunk?!
Incredible lecturer. Multiple choice final tricky.
He is very helpful. Very approachable. Very good looking. If you see him during office hours he could boost your grade up if you do better on the final.
Awesome professor, super easy GE, interesting lectures, and notes provided online. Easy A and one of my favorite classes. Textbook not really needed.
Great guy with a very interesting class. He has a very generous curve. Roughly 65% of students get at least a B. The class is fairly easy. If you get a bad grade it's only because you didn't try. Do yourself a favor and go to the lectures. It makes it a whole lot easier to study come midterms and finals.
He is a good teacher, and he curve the class a lot. However, his midterm and final are too hard. I study hard but did not do well in this class. So if you wannna get a good grade, work hard in this class
Very good curve and very interesting professor. Tests are hard, but the professor was so engaged it was worth waking up early to go to lecture. Pay lots of attention to plate tectonics and you'll have a B for sure.
Very approachable professor whose interest in the topic is infectious. You can tell he loves what he does, making going to class that much easier. The course load is not too demanding, if you go to the lectures and read his notes posted online then the book is not a necessity. I thoroughly enjoyed the class, professor Osleger is a genuine guy.
Amazing professor! Made the subject incredibly interesting (took it as an easy A class now taking more and more geology courses) and was very clear in lecture. If you go to lecture and take notes everything is pretty easy. The midterms and final are extremely straightforward. No "pick most correct answer" he made it "only one is correct." Awesome!
Super cool guy/class! I've heard a few people say that they hardly ever went to class and still did fine, but I would really recommend going. Dave shows a bunch of visuals and it helped me a lot to grasp the concepts. Hardly any work required outside of class and no textbook. My favorite class of the quarter, definitely recommend!
Dave was a great teacher. He knew what he was talking about and could explain things in many different ways. I strongly recommend this class. Make sure to go to class and study if you want that A. He's a great guy and awesome professor. Although it was a huge class, it didn't feel that way. Looking forward to taking more of his classes.
What can I say? By far the easiest, yet most interesting elective I've taken! 25% of class gets an A, 40% gets a B, and the remainder get C's, etc. Don't even bother buying the textbook; his notes are posted before each lecture, and he explains everything clearly! Be warned: the 1st midterm may catch you by surprise. After that, the class is easy!

Dave is a very down to Earth guy. His class is a breath of fresh air for any taking it. More than 2/3 of the class gets an A or B. Attending lecture is mandatory, but those 50 minutes teach you everything you need. DONT buy the book. I studied for the final simply by reading his pre-typed lecture notes. Office hours are super helpful. Do recommend!
Great professor, great guy. Cares about the subject, cares about the students. Very fair and easy assignments; types up all the notes and puts them online. That being said, lecture was also super interesting and he makes it fun. Highly recommend.
Dave is a great professor. Posts all the notes online, so lecture isn't necessary and he doesn't deviate from online lecture notes. 2 papers, 1 midterm, 1 final. Don't need to memorize details, only understand concepts and ideas. But Lecture and Discussion don't correlate; it's like taking 2 classes in 1. Overall, pretty easy GE, would recommend.
30% of your grade is based on the discussion section which involves weekly assignments and two 5-page research papers. 1 Midterm is 30% of your grade the final is 40%. I took this class thinking it would be an easy A, but I was mistaken. His tests are tricky, and the research papers are long and graded strictly. I wouldn't taken this class for a GE
Dave is an awesome professor. He is really enthusiastic during his lectures and really encourages students to ask any questions. The tests are tough, but his curves are extremely generous. He is very understanding/helpful and will remember you if you go to his office hours. No homework or textbook, just read the notes he gives and it should be fine
Very clear, but tests are based on detailed facts of chronology that can throw you off. His curve is respectable. I only studied before tests, so if you reviewed notes more often an A is obtainable reasonably easy.
Super interesting topic and really cool professor. Kept everyone interested in the topic and included many personal experiences during lecture. He is very clear and keeps his lectures organized. Tests are challenging, but the curve is good. I am pretty sure everyone who takes this class has a mini crush on Osleger by the end.
He is such an amazing professor. Don't let the sternness he shows during lecture dissuade you from taking the class. During office hours he is a hilarious guy and insanely knowledgeable about geology.
LOVED THIS CLASS!! Best class I have taken so far! So interesting and he teaches using pictures and answers any questions you have! BEST CLASS AND BEST PROFESSOR! Very generous curve, with studying an A is very attainable.
Super easy class full of fascinating information; wish all my classes were like this Geology class! Just show up most days, listen to him, read a bit & you will pass & understand for sure. Dave is knowledgeable, accessible & passionate with a very basic layout to his class. 2 papers, one midterm & a final, none are scary. VERY gentle grader! 10/10!
Took this class for fun, it was SUPER easy for me (science major). Maybe a bit more foreign to non-science majors. But, prof. explains things very clearly, goes really slowly, encourages questions, you can ask literally anything. One of the most hold-your-hand professors. Tests based purely on lecture material & provided study guide.
Professor was very cool and accessible. 2 midterms and a final, class is positively curved, memorize the comprehensive pre-made notes he gives out and use the lectures to visualize geologic processes and you should be fine. The material was amazing, I am planning those road trips. Great intro to geology for the layman.
Prof. Osleger is a fantastic teacher who is accessible both in and outside the classroom. He is very passionate about his field and it shows in his lectures. His Geology of National Parks class is the best class I have taken so far. You'll want to study for his tests, and as long as you do that and take good notes, you should be fine. Great guy!
Dave is the best professor I have ever had. He is extremely passionate about his field, and he really cares if the students are understanding what he is saying. His lectures are so amazing, I could record them and listen to them over and over again. his lectures might make you consider a major/minor in Geology.
Dave is a great professor; however, he doesn't care about you once you're a geology student. in class, it seems like he makes an effort to recruit students to major in geology, but the professors in the major do not care about your success or even teaching you. Dave knows this and still tries to bring students to the department without fixing it.
Dave's a nice guy who's passionate about what he teaches. You can tell he really knows his stuff when he lectures. 2 exams. 1 research paper 6 pages. Paper wasn't too bad but exams were free response and I couldn't answer 5 questions in 50 minutes because I was a slow & messy writer. However, the class made me appreciate the world and Big History!
Dave is a fantastic instructor who wants his students to succeed. He was always welcoming at office hours and enthusiastic about the content. If you are taking this as a GE, it is not easy. Exams are multiple choice and can be tricky. Class is time consuming for a 3 unit non major course, but nevertheless it is interesting.
Dr. Osleger was an amazing professor, and he cared so much for his students. The tests were a little difficult but he curves at the end of the quarter. Go to office hours if you are having trouble!! HIs office hours were so helpful! Discussion was like a separate class. Overall, awesome class and teacher but I wish I tried harder
Dr. Osleger is a really nice guy and an interesting lecturer. His lectures are great and help you learn the material, although honestly if you read his notes and the textbook you don't have to go. There's two pretty straightforward essays that are 4 pages double spaced. His tests are solely based off his notes that he posts on canvas.
This professor was fine. I was bored throughout the class and ended up primarily attending discussions and watching lectures online. I wouldn't take this class again, but I know people who like him. I think it had more to do with the subject matter than Osleger, but overall it wasn't too hard. The tests were kind of weird though.
Professor Osleger is great! I'm not usually into science, and people always talk about geology like it's boring ("Isn't it just rocks?"), but I LOVED this class. Come to class and be attentive. Not difficult, and material is very interesting. We didn't have a textbook, but I believe that's changing since Prof. Osleger just wrote one.
Very approachable
I really enjoyed his class. His lectures are well organized and he makes the topics accessible and intestine.
You can tell he's super passionate about geology and everything he's teaching but if you're not equally as passionate the lectures can get a bit boring. Lectures are recorded and posted online so attendance definitely isn't mandatory. 2 midterms, 2 papers, and a final. All tests are MC based on his lecture notes, which are super clear and concise!
Osleger has been one of greatest prof here at Davis. He genuinely cares about his students and loves geology. 2 papers and 2 midterms and a final. If you take good notes and read the assigned textbook pages, its an easy A
Dave really cares about his students and wants you to succeed. His class is a lot more work than the usual lower division class so I wouldn't take it as an easy A. The class is like a flipped class. He lectures on basic topics but expects you to know fine details in the notes he posts. This class is work.
David is a great guy, kinda like a sweet dad. he's super helpful outside of class and clearly wants you to do well in his class, but his tests had a ton of content and seemed too challenging to be a 2 unit class. I definitely had to study more than I expected for the three 15 point quizzes and cumulative final.
Let me start off by saying that he is definitely a great professor, but he needs to tone down his tests. This class requires you to study as much as you would for a 4 unit class, even though its only 2 units. I have no clue why he made his tests so detail oriented. He also needs to have more than 80 points, because it leaves no room for error.
I've taken multiple classes with Dave and absolutely loved him! There's no hw and you don't have to show up. He posts the slides online and films class so you can watch it at home. His tests can be a little tricky if you don't study his notes and guide enough. Overall, he has a great personality and really cares about the topic and his students.
2 midterms, 1 final. He threw in a couple homework assignments that help gain points & not be as midterm heavy. His lectures are clear/concise & records them to canvas. His tests are no joke, so study pretty frequently. Use the notes he puts on canvas and watch the lectures over and over again. His curves are helpful.
I was taking this class as a GE and thought it would be cool to learn about national parks. The professor is nice and everything, but his tests are really difficult. There are two midterms and 1 final which all determine your grade; he does curve though (barely). Take this class at your own risk because his tests are super specific!
DAVE IS THE BEST PROFESSOR EVER. Such a sweet guy, exams are multiple choice and straight forward. TAKE HIM!!
While he is a great professor, these concepts are difficult to grasp and what's worse is he makes his tests even harder. He does curve well, but that's because if he didn't a majority of his class would fail. He likes to knit-pick the specifics on the parks on tests. This is NOT an easy S&E class for all of you non-stem majors!
so glad he was one of my first profs ever! so nice and wants to see you succeed. class went pretty quick and there is a lot to study by the final, but he really explains concepts thoroughly. only gave us homework because we asked for it, and always open for questions. lectures can be dry sometimes but its the material, not him! Take his class!
It's a hard (detailed, specific) class. I took it as an elective and I'm a STEM major, and it required more time and effort than I could put forth. Just being honest! David is a great professor though.
The first time in my life that I wished I could get some HW, or at least a textbook that I could refer to. The class's contents solely depends on his lectures and course notes, which are totally not enough for getting an A in exam. And, Like, he teaches how to do linear algebra, but hope you could design rocket in exams after reviewing.(metaphor)
I loved this professor and class. You have to work hard for the A. He grades based on a bell curve, so you're almost competing with your classmates for a good grade. Absolutely go to office hours, Dave cares about his students and genuinely wants to help us understand the material. Also, when he says to read the book, he means it. Read the book!!!
very nice and easy to talk to in class and in office hours. He's always willing to help, and tries to make the class engaged by joking around. Although he's a nice and helpful guy, beware of his exams. They aren't easy, and make sure to apply concepts, don't memorize. He does curve A LOT, so you will do well nevertheless. AN 83 is an A!!!
I enjoyed the class. I wish there could have been a textbook because there is just so much. The tests were somewhat hard ( you have to apply the concept, not memorize). I would suggest going to office hours and ask questions! Study the images provided. He curves which is very helpful!(90%-80%A, 80%-70%B). Fun and interesting class overall!
Dr. Osleger's earthquake lectures definitely left me with existential dread more than once, but he's very chill (prefers to be called Dave by students). Super interesting lectures. 10/10 would take that class again if I could.
Great lecturer. Willing to wait for questions and patiently answers anything that the class can come up with. Relaxed attitude but still takes the class seriously. Very interesting topics all through the quarter.
Dave is a very kind man and passionate about what he teaches. I am an English major and took his geology class for fun, but it was very enjoyable and I learned a lot. His office hours were just as good as his lectures--he is great to talk to about course and non-course related topics. Very fair grader and very accommodating of student needs.
I take notes durings lectures but his notes are already so thorough and has all the answers, seriously... He really takes his time to make sure everyone is understanding the material. Honestly such an easy class and I would take again. There's a quiz every week, one cummulative final and one midterm (both free response but soooooo easy)!!!!
His course is boring and the tests are all based on textbook and lecture notes, but he is a tough grader.
This is definitely not as easy as a ge as people say it is. Proffesor grades really hard and takes the exams seriously. The entire class is only out of 100 points. Not to mention this is a very heavy class about rocks and time periods, very boring.
Look, Dave is a great person. He means well, he is kind, and there is no question that he knows the material. However, he is so boring, the class for fall was just 6 quizzes, midterm, and final. He curves the class generously but it is hard. The material is boring, and you better know your stuff if you want a good grade. Most can agree it was tough
Dave is nice but the class is unfair and boring. Gives 6-8 questions per exam with 4-5 subquestions. Exams are short answer. Hes specific with what he wants said in the answers but doesn't give enough time. Says he "curves" but he doesnt. He really just helps the people who are below a C- get a passing grade. Not worth the stress for an "easy" GE.
Dave is a friendly guy who by the end of the class will make you want to travel and see the world. This class does require a decent amount of effort but as long as you read the lecture notes and listen to the things he reiterates throughout lecture you'll be fine. Tests are open note but curve is based on how everyone else does in the class.
I thought I hated geology but Dave makes everything in his lectures/notes very easy to understand so doing well on the quizzes/tests was not difficult since everything is in the notes. Very kind and understanding, if you have troubles he'll be happy to help out if you just ask. My favorite prof, I'm a dumb bio major but got an A and loved class
prof. Osleger was passionate about the subject. I found a new interest when taking this class. provides students with very detailed notes along with images. gives students a study guide that contains questions similar to midterm and final. 6 hw (drops the lowest), 1 midterm, and 1 final. Overall I recommend taking this course with prof. Osleger
He is really knowledgable on what he teaches. Def a harder GE than others but is super cool and wants his students to actually learn and enjoy it rather than worry about the grade. In GEL 25 (national parks) during covid there were 6 quizzes (drop lowest score and two attempts) one midterm and one final. He also grades on a curve.
This prof is great at teaching. Has a very generous curve. The only thing, there aren't many assignments, and everyone is competing against each other to get an A.
Even though attendance isn't mandatory, at least for online classes. His lectures slides are the main component tested. If you choose to skip the lectures, watch the recordings! His lectures are engrossing and easy to follow. In his grading system, you're competing with everyone else to get a better grade. it all depends on how well others do
Favorite prof at UCD. Anyone saying his class is hard has never taken a STEM class before, watch lectures, read the textbook and go to office hours and youll be fine. He convinced me to double major in Geology, is an amazing person and actually cares for undergraduate instruction. Take his class if you can, hes a really interesting guy.
My favorite professor at UC Davis. His lectures were really interesting, So good that I looked forward to his lectures and learned about the national parks! Great easy class, but I learned a lot too! Makes me excited to go visit many parks.
I really enjoyed this class & wish I had put more effort into it. I also wish I could've had Dave as an instructor in person because he is truly an inspiring mentor and said he would've taken us on a field trip or two. He is very passionate and cares about our future. He provides you all the means to succeed and puts a lot of effort into the class.
Honestly took this freshman year and legit the best class ever. You literally are taking a class in COLLEGE to learn about the national parks! Get ready to take notes if you are not going to follow his lecture notes that he has posted online. If you enjoy nature you are going to LOVE this class. BUT pay attention and study its a lot of information
Best lecturer! He is inspirational and engaging
David is a good professor. He makes Geology fun and accessible! Review lecture notes and you'll be fine.
Dave is a great professor and I honestly can't wait to have a class with him again. This course is well balanced, both lecture and discussion are actually interesting. Dave clearly actually cares about his students and hopes they succeed.
Professor Osleger is a great teacher. He truly cares about his students. However, there is a lot of information covered here and the tests are based on putting all of it together. Tests were a little difficult for me personally but many others got A's. Pay attention to the bold words in notes. Connect ideas. Show up to discussion - easy points.
Dave's lectures were very clear and I was able to understand all of the concepts when I used his study tips. Despite this, the midterm and final were very very hard. We weren't tested on the processes as much as the parks' ages and features and how they compare to one another.
This class was amazing with Dave! I highly recommend it to anyone. There was no homework, just optional textbook reading that helped, but reviewing the lecture notes was best. Dave is incredibly passionate and made me excited to learn. Grading was just midterm and final and discussion exercises. All lectures were recorded. A very generous curve.
Dave is fantastic. He really cares about the subject and students' understanding. Albeit, this class was a lot of work in understanding the content but it was interesting. Discussions, lectures were all recorded, 1 midterm, 1 final, bell curve helps a lot. Study by the lecture images & slides, talk it out w/ notes in hand or try to teach someone.
great professor! honestly could've done better in the class if i read the notes he personally wrote for us. he is always nice and will answer your questions. make sure to attend lectures (he does record them tho) because it's easier to understand when you're awake and actually able to see what he's referring to on the slides.
This class was supposed to be my fun and interesting class, but it was way too hard for being 3 units. His grading scale is not accurate. I was projected to get a C-, but I ended with a B. Super stressful class and NOT worth it.
The weekly quizzes are what brought my grade down but they're only 6 questions. They were a little unclear but the lectures are easy to follow and he's super nice. I loved this prof. The midterms are multiple choice and no group projects.
Knows his stuff and has his teaching methods down to a science. Weekly open-note quizzes about what was covered in lecture. If you're interested in basic geology and/or national parks this is an amazing course.
professor osleger was amazing!! i had no interest in geology going into the class but ended up thoroughly enjoying the class and looking forward to lectures. the content can be a bit much, but he does a great job preparing you for the exams (midterm + final + 6 quizzes) and emphasizes key concepts
David Osleger is the GOAT. Whether we're talking about Yosemite or the Grand Canyon, his knowledge and passion for national parks creates the foundations for his teachings. If you aren't all that interested in national parks, he will make you interested. If you already like national parks, he will make you understand the geology behind them.
Professor Osleger: not the best, not the worst. He often goes on tangents during lectures and his teaching style didn't work for me. I liked the weekly quizzes because they were open book/open note. His midterms were so hard for me because it seemed like multiple answers could have been correct. Overall, a super cool guy! Just not ideal for me.
Dave is such a good prof. You dont have to take notes because he makes his own with all the necessary info. You do actually need to pay attention tho bc it is a lot of info, not hard if you are interested in the subject and national parks.
David Osleger is one of the greatest professors I have ever had. All information is easily accessible and all exams and homework are extremely fair. Lectures are engaging and informative and he is very accessible outside of lecture. Any class with professor Osleger is a complete Joy!
Probably my favorite professor I've had at Davis so far! His lectures are engaging and connect with one another very well. He's great at explaining complex concepts and repeating the important ones, and only testing on the concepts that matter rather than minor details. Super caring and approachable as well.
Osleger was a pretty good professor. He's very good at explaining things and good at making sure he repeats important topics multiple times. If you go to lectures, pay attention, study, and take notes, you'll do great on exams. The exams were a little difficult but the class was very interesting. You can tell he loves teaching geology.
Dr. Dave taught a really amazing class this quarter that quickly became one of my favorite classes. This class is accessible to all students regardless of major or prior experience with geology. Dr. Dave is caring and respectful and I really enjoyed all of his lectures. Lots of food-related metaphors that make the learning easier. Would take again!
Such a good professor! Lots of opportunity to inflate your grade. Tests are pretty easy to get at least a B on and not a crazy amount of work.
Dave is a great guy. This course is applicable & when I visit more parks in the future I will definitely be bringing my textbook, which Dave wrote. You may have heard this is an "easy" course. I wouldn't say easy, as the midterm and final had averages of 20/30 and 21/40. 37% of class got an A and 38% got a B. Final grades are curved of around 10%.
Dave is an amazing professor. He explains everything well, this is my 2nd geology class with him. The class is 30% midterm, 30% online quizzes and 40% final, so it is test heavy. But it is really straight forward if you go to lecture and put time in to learn the material. He gives you his notes and records lectures. Amazing class, I learned a lot.
great prof such a nice guy. very helpful with questions and wants everyone to understand the material. super passionate in his lectures. tests were harder than i expected but manageable if you study.
He did not make his slides available for students. He had 6 quizzes one dropped. one midterm and one final. He curved like crazy bc he sucked at teaching. Had he not curved, everyone in the class would've failed (everyone in the discord failed both exams)
Not enough good things to say about Professor Dave. He is exceptionally caring about all his students and made a clear effort to get to know every student who came to his office hours. His office hours were not just for questions about the course, but also for random questions or stories that students had about geology or national parks in general.
Professor Osleger is one of the nicest and most caring Professor I have met. I have gone to office hour once, and he remembered me. His content for class GEL025 was also very interesting.
I was pleasantly surprised by this class. Osleger is an incredible lecturer and answers all questions really well. It's obvious he cares about his students in terms of grading and even encouraged us to reach out to him to ask him questions about taking a trip to a national park. The class isn't by any means a piece of cake but it's worth it!
His lectures are really good and very interesting. I learned a lot about the Earth and geology even though I took as a GE. The quizzes aren't too difficult. The exams can be challenging, but if you study thoroughly it'll be fine. He provides his own notes to study from, but make sure to comb through those because anything from them is fair game.
incredible lecturer, makes content easy to understand, interesting and gives you SO MANY opportunities to get your grade up. posts lecture notes, slides, images. wants everyone to pass his class and gives study tips. take him!!
Even though I got an A, I legit will beg you not to take this class, I honestly believe my bio and chem classes were easier. For a 2-3 unit class, this should be a 5 unit class. I am pretty smart and this class was honestly the worst class ever. People saying it's a good class are the ones that are a weird major. Don't take it trust me!
do NOT take this class. there is no reason for it to be as difficult as he makes it. i did better in ochem than this class
Loved this class so much. I came into this class as an undeclared major and I'm leaving as a future Geology major. You can tell how genuine he is about the subject and I truly felt like I learned a lot. Can't wait to go camping in the places we talked about.
Not an easy GE but you learn alot. He is a great guy and wants everyone to succeed. Was taking multiple upper divisions and was hoping the workload wasn't going to be as much as it demanded. A decent class with a pretty good professor. Probably wouldnt have taken it otherwise though
Great professor and guy. Super helpful if you go to his office hours. Tests can be tricky (all MCQs and T/F but fair questions). Discussion/take home quizzes are half your grade, and midterm/final is other half. Encourages questions in lectures. I don't think geology is my thing so topic was on denser side. Textbook is recommended but optional.
I really enjoyed the Professor's lectures and found them very useful, especially his own notes and presentations that are accessible on Canvas. The lectures and information are very dense, and there's A LOT of things he goes over even when the topics are simplified. Geology wasn't really for me so I struggled a lot, however.
Professor Dave is an amazing lecturer, he care about his students a lot, 10/10 would take again. BUT: FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO ARE TAKING THIS CLASS AS AN EASY GE , DO NOT!!!! unless you put in the work, the course will be DIFFICULT!
A great professor. Was very clearly passionate about what he teaches, this rubs off on students and makes the early lecture engaging. Genuinely cares about students. Offers a lot of support, pre-written notes (very useful), optional textbook readings. Very generous grading system, not a class that should stress you out too much.
No HW. Optional textbook readings. He gives his notes, you just need to memorize them. A lot to remember, but easy concepts. I just couldn't remember all the info for exams. 6 online, open note quizzes. 1 midterm and 1 final. Lowest quiz dropped. Caring and funny guy. Really good lecturer and kind. You need to put time into this class for an A.
Very engaging prof in lecture. Study the notes he gives by actively engaging like drawing and active recall/ blurting. Look at the textbook to cement concepts. Bank easy points by going to discussion and taking time on quizzes (online open note). Then study by trying to connect all the concepts you learn through active studying. Great class.
CANNOT RECOMMEND PROF. DAVE ENOUGH! He has great lecture and his study guides match the midterm and the final exactly. Go to lecture in person, it will pay off. Use the lecture notes and images to study that's really all you need.
Weekly open book quizzes which were easy points. You gotta go to discussion sections though for your grade. He is very nice and wants everyone to do well. He posts notes on Canvas which is good for studying. His exams were clear and not too difficult. Overall an interesting class and good professor!
Fantastic lectures and provides the slides and gives the notes he teaches to the class to read. Quizzes are online and easy. The exams will be harder than you expect but still very doable. Don't let the ease of the quizzes fool you, you will need to study for the exams. The textbook helps but it is not necessary.
100% would recommend.
Posts all lectures on Canvas and some days will use Zoom in place of an in person lecture. Lectures are important to listen in to. Tests are all multiple choice and quizzes are take home and open note. Studying is necessary in order to pass. Textbook provided but not necessary.
Osleger was genuinely such a good professor. He really cares about the subject and it's clear he's very knowledgable. Don't slack off of lectures after the first couple of weeks, it's easy to fall behind considering the breadth of content covered. Grading scheme a bit confusing but very generous, cannot recommend enough!
I am literally taking another one of his classes just for him. You can tell he cares very deeply about the subject and also his students. He prioritizes each question and overall just a very funny kind man. Would definitely recommend!
Loved Professor Dave. Very engaging, enthusiastic and accessible for students to ask questions outside of class. The final is tough, but if you study you'll do well, plus his class is graded on a bell curve so you'll do better than you think. Highly recommend this class.
Interesting stuff, but this is NOT the class to take if you're wanting an easy GE. Quiz 2 was significantly more difficult than Quiz 1, and asked about things we were told we didn't have to know. If you're wanting an easy GE and this is your only option, it would be better to go below 12 units than take the class.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS IF U WANT AN EASY GE. Lectures pretty interesting however quizzes are NOT easy, they take a lot of time even though they are open note. First midterm wasnt too bad but the average was a 65% so def not an easy GE. There is a curve but it wont save you if u do poorly on the exams. U will have to study hard in order to succeed.
NOT an easy GE so DON'T take if you aren't interested in Geology! WAY more than just fact memorization. Osleger cares about the subject but he teaches as if everyone is a Geology major or has prior knowledge. He is often condescending and assumes that everyone has been to/has the means to access National Parks. Avg on the 2nd midterm was a 46%.
I am a freshman at UC Davis, and this has been the worst class I have taken so far. In my next three years here, I don't think any class will beat this. The overall class average scored at a 68%. If he really cared about his students, he would change his entire teaching syllabus to adapt to their needs. To stay happy in life, don't take his class.
no. DO NOT take this as an easy GE. Most people rating it 5 prob barley got that A/B in his class. He curves a lot but thats because NO ONE WOULD PASS HIS CLASS IF HE DIDNT. Midterm 2 average was a 46% (worse than my chem class average). Weekly quizzes take too much time no matter how much you pay attention, boring lectures. absolutely do not.
As a freshman, I struggled with some of the concepts that were taught in GEL 120, an upper division class. But once I went to Professor's office hours, he was very patient and willing to explain to me the concepts that I had difficulty with in a clear manner. Office hours are always chill and helpful. On top of that, he gives engaging lectures!
Professor Osleger is engaging and makes the material interesting. The lectures are essential - staying on top of them and using unstuckstudy ai alongside the textbook will help you do well. Tests are tough but manageable with proper preparation. Highly recommend this class!
If you're looking for an easy GE, I wouldn't recommend this class since the quizzes are quite difficult even though they are open note. The midterm was also pretty difficult, making it hard to get a high A in this class. He is very passionate about geology and a great lecturer who will always answer your questions to the best of his ability.
Professor Osleger is very knowledgeable on geology topics and makes his lectures very interesting. Lectures aren't mandatory but they definitely help you a LOT in understanding material on tests. He gives good guidelines on how to study for his exams, and exam difficulty is pretty easy. He made me interested in pursuing geology
An amazing professor who is incredibly engaging and clearly cares about his students. As long as you put in the work and follow his recommendation of sitting and listening to lectures and taking notes afterward, you'll retain all the material. You can tell he is passionate about what he is talking about which is what makes it all the better.
For this quarters, our professor dave is having a wonderful work. I am taking gel001 and gel17 together. Though it is first time taking his class. I feel like it is a trip to sf science museum, or a well made documentary. No politics, no bs, just the simple beautiful geology and the world we live in and loved. The class difficulty is easy-medium.
Great readings and lectures. Tests on same content in readings. Unfortunately I was taking BIS2A and CHEM2C same quarter so unable to put full effort into this class, but still very much enjoyed it. Chill dude.
Great professor! He cares about his students and gives detailed lectures, which keeps them engaged.
Incredibly caring and intelligent professor. Lectures, slides, and pre-made notes are posted. Mandatory discussions, midterm, 5/6 quizzes, and final makes up grade. Gives you everything needed to succeed, but that doesn't mean just skimming the material is enough to get an A. The course covers a broad range of subjects, so keep up with everything.
wonderful professor. genuinely cares about students. wants you to succeed. quizzes open book/note. never read book and did fine. provides his own notes and says they will be better than any notes you take which is TRUE. use them. definitely had to work hard for midterm/final. study guides are helpful. curve at end and no grade in canvas until then.
This class was awesome, I highly recommend taking it. The professor was super interesting and the few graded assignments were reasonable and based on what was covered in the lectures. The material was super interesting and easy to understand. While attendance isn't mandatory, the tests are based on the lectures and notes the professor provides.
Prof. Osleger is passionate about geology, and he is very easy-going during office hours. As long as you pay attention in class and study his class notes before the tests, you are going to succeed.
Dave clearly cares about his students and wants everyone to succeed but I will say for an intro geology class the content was very heavy very quick and I found his midterm/final to be hard despite studying a lot for it. He expects you to know the nitty gritty concepts of geology which is annoying if you are taking this class just for ur major.
If you have a chance to take any of Osleger's classes, take it. Seriously one of the best, listen to the reviews.
I took this class to fill a GE req and honestly, it wasn't as intimidating at first but the amount one needs to study definitely stacks up as you go along. He is very interested in what he teaches and is happy to answer questions! Don't underestimate the contents of the class, it all adds up at the end! The weekly quizzes weren't bad at all though
Very good and caring teacher, lectures are very interesting!
Interesting course but definitely reminded me why I'm not majoring in Geology. A lot of science and note taking. Tests were fair but got me sweating my pants a bit.
Weekly online quiz. Tests are most of the grade and are pretty difficult. The curve was good though
If you are looking to a fun easy ge, don't take him, he crash me. The material is tricky and harder than my math class, I am crashing out, and we need to memorize 100,000 geology novel to get a b at the end
The class is hard.
Do not take him. The class is too hard
be ready to study but it is n easy class class because of the really well done lectures, loved Dr.Osleger and his awesome lectures.
Amazing professor! No homework, just weekly online quizzes. Midterm and final are confusing questions on purpose, but study and you'll be fine. He's very nice and you can tell he really cares about the students and the material he teaches.
absolutely loved taking gel 001 with dave $hmoney. very easy going and understanding- he 1 of 1 for surely, yall take him if u get the chance!!!!
He says "hey gang" at the start of every lecture, so yk he's a cool guy. Interesting lectures and you might feel good about the content, but then the test is so confusing! Love ya dave
Really enjoyable class if earth science interests you. He is very passionate about the subject and it shows through his lectures. Grading based on discussion, midterm and final both multiple choice. The lecture notes are gold for studying. Curve is very generous.
genuinely love him. all lectures are recorded and notes are provided for every lecture. very passionate person (and great for convos after lecture too!) he actually wants to see everyone succeed and gives every opportunity to. easy A if you show up to discussion sections. lectures can be skipped but discussions skipped will bring grades down a lot
Professor Osleger was very caring and patient! As someone who is not scientifically inclined, I found his class very manageable. Just make sure to thoroughly read the notes and take his study recommendations. Your grade is based on six quizzes, discussion, and the midterm and final, so be sure not to miss too much.
Skipped literally every class except for first class, midterm, and final. Got an A, tough tests fs.
