I currently have him for Ecology and I adore him! He is such a sweet guy and he's pretty funny, he always manages to make me smile. While he gives amazing lectures, his tests are rather difficult. I recommend going to Office Hours as much as possible, and go over your exam results with him. He may even give credit back on things you missed!
Dr. Outomuro is a great teacher, his classes are lecture dependent for his tests. He doesn't test on anything outside of his lecture material which is a plus. His class does require you to apply knowledge rather than just memorize. He is always available outside of class and really cares about his students! His office hours are helpful!
This was by far the worst class I've ever taken in my life. His class was absurdly hard and made tests impossible. I took ecology with him and he acted like he had a responsibility to make it intentionally harder to prove some kind of point. I'm a straight A bio student and I failed 2/3 exams throughout the class. DO NOT TAKE HIM!!!!
Worst semester of my life. All my friends know how miserable I was being in this guy's class. Disgustingly high expectations and exams that were on insane amounts of content. Worst time ever.
Dr. Priede was AMAZING. Exams were so easy, they were straight from the lectures. People did not take ecology seriously and thus did poorly on the exams. But the exams purpose is to test how well you understand the concepts, and it accomplished that goal. He literally gave a (6%) boost on EVERY exam... Easiest science class ever, best professor!!!
awful. hated him. he was literally awful- he is condescending when asking a question and can be very standoffish.
Very confusing exams.
A 92.5 was an A. I had a 92.3 and he gave me an A-. Will never forgive him for that one
Professor Priede was a fantastic teacher, best one I’ve had so far. The exams are very straight forward and based only on the lectures and what we discuss in class. As long you do the work and prepare for exams based on the lectures then the class is a breeze.
I am in the middle of Bio 2 and I cry myself to sleep each night because I can not understand the Evolution portion of this class. Ecology and Evolution is my major and I am ecstatic about this subject, but when it comes to David I can’t bare the word Evolution. He does not teach the math that comes along with Evolution. Do not take!!!!!!!!!
I’m in this class as I am typing this and he is currently reading off the slides. He goes through a chapter per lecture and it very hard to keep up. He is not clear with what sections we need to read he just says read the chapter.
do not take. do.not.take. he made me hate bio and bio used to be my favorite subject. dude makes me cry every day. he does not care about his students. not even talking about just the lectures. THE HOMEWORKS R SO HARD. do not take him for the love of god pls do not
terrible. just terrible
He is not very good at explaining the material and moves very quickly. His homework are only 1 attempt and very difficult. They are also only worth 1 point, sometimes even less. His exams are not very straightforward and very application-based. He is also defensive to feedback.
Terrible!!! Do not take!!! He is loud af during exams telling everyone to stop talking although it’s so quiet I could hear someone breathing from the top of the cathedral from here (L9 clapp hall). He has a bad attitude and exams are poorly worded. Would go anywhere else to take bio 2 than with him
Don't ever take this course. I have taken 4 other biology classes in my life and I have NEVER struggled with a bio course and I am failing his. His lectures are focused on comprehension and applying it to the tophat, but all of his exams are content based. If you don't know the exact definition your screwed, even if you get the concept. DONT DO IT
Easily the worst professor I have ever had. Lectures are unclear and hard to follow. Questions are worded poorly and often suggest certain answers. Often time ask questions with awkward technicalities and requires a lot of memorization. Learning the material is not going to get you a good grade, memorizing random stuff might.
AVOID AT ALL COSTS! I loved bio and science in general until taking this class. His TAs don't really contribute much either and seem confused when explaining topics when asked. Dr. O tends to make his tests very hard and includes info that was barely/not covered in his notes. There is also NO CURVE at all! He laughs at us when we do bad on class Qs
Dude is a terrible teacher for Bio 2. Admits to not knowing the first half to 3/4 of the semesters material. Tests are on things we have never talked about. When everyone failed and asked for a curve he laughed at us saying we need to work harder. I am a consistent A and B science student but I had to withdrawal because my grade was a 50.
Though somehow self-aware of his own shortcomings as a lecturer, David makes no attempt to fix them and instead chooses to laugh at struggling students. Admitting openly that he does not understand the material for a few units, he somehow expects students taking a gen ed to understand specific details in them that barely are pertinent to the topic.
I personally do not find the topic of ecology very interesting and was hoping that bio 2 taught by an ecologist would make that unit more interesting. Sadly, I was proven wrong as this class had me contemplating whether I wanted to go into the sciences at all if people like David would be my future colleagues. Save your passion and skip this class.
he is a tough professor but does a great job answering questions in and out of class. Use the study guides provided by TA's and the practice questions at the end of textbook. Overall if you read the textbook and pay attention to lectures you should do well, and if you have any questions you can ask him and he will make sure you understand.
Brilliant professor, great lecturer, excels at explaining difficult concepts, and wants his students to be successful be providing them with many helpful resources. In order to do well in this class, I recommend keeping up to date with readings and taking notes prior as his lectures are a perfect opportunity to add to your notes.
Take LITERALLY any other professor for Bio 2. I had to withdraw from the course after the first 3 exams because I had failed all of them, and many other people in the class had as well. The first 3 exam class averages were all below 70%, and he didn't seem to care at all.
He was extremely unaccommodating to students. Refused to record a review session even though it was during spring break, and at an early time in the day. Has to stop the entire lecture and scold us over the smallest things (e.g., people coming late, quiet talking). His tests are difficult if you don't know the specific details. Do not take him.
Does not not explain the mathematics in the Ecology/Evolution units. Please do not take him. Terrible.
Priede is a great professor, just not for every subject. His main focus is on ecology which does not show up till the end of the semester. He tells you in the beginning of the semester that reading the book is very important, but you come to realize that it goes way too in-depth. The best way to go about this class is to attend every lecture.
At the beginning of the semester, he was't the best lecturer. But after the midterm surveys, he started teaching much much better and the class did well on the rest of the exams. He's kinda mean, but I learned a lot from his class
Dr. Outomuro made exams extremely difficult. I had to spend 3+ hours everyday for a week studying and preparing for an exam. This class gave me so much anxiety that I ended up getting a therapist halfway through the semester because I could not handle the stress. The only reason I got an A was because I spent all of my time studying.
Do not take David, trust me. I was a straight A student last semester, but I'm struggling more than ever now because of him. His exams/homework are ridiculously difficult and he will laugh at you if you ask for a curve. If you're going through a tough time/mental health issues, he'll refuse to help you out or make accommodations. DO NOT TAKE HIM!
He is one of the most narcissistic professors I have every met in my life. His office hours are useless because when you don't understand something he will just be like well idk why you dont understand it its pretty simple. He also cannot take criticism and is SUPER defensive. I made an A in bio last semester but his exams are just impossible.
Honestly a great choice for BIOSC 1010! Its definitely work heavy during the first half but really lightens out. He is a pretty easy/fair grader and gives a lot of good feedback to improve writing. Overall pretty lowkey class and solid choice of professor.
DO NOT TAKE! If you care about your grades, pick a different professor. David is a terrible instructor and is very disrespectful to students. He does not care about you or your ability to understand his class. He openly admitted that he was not comfortable with the first 2/3 of the class material. I have never had more stress/anxiety over a class.
had an A in every bio class ive ever taken until now, poured my entire soul into studying for this class & ended with a B-. do not take him. he is rude to students and extremely defensive about criticism. refuses to curve even when exam averages are far below 70. tests seem random honestly. started daily anxiety medication for him and this class.
Tests really do not reflect material taught in class most of the time. Tests are very difficult and grading consistency is unclear sometimes. would not take again.
He's not as bad as everyone makes him out to be. You just need to put in the work. I changed my study habits after the first half of the course and it really paid off. Office hours also helped a lot. Grades are test heavy but he drops one, and one gets replaced by the final. There are also bonus points instilled in the tests, homeworks, and tophats
At the beginning of the term, he was not my favorite professor but now I really recommend him. I got a B- on my first exams but learned how to study for his class and ended with an A. He's a good lecturer and accessible outside class. He drops one midterm and a final, 20% of the grade is hw and participation (basically everyone got full points).
Dr. Outomuro was so rude to people during class, literally telling them to "shut up" during lecture. He also gave homework which consisted of usually 10- 20 questions and worth only 1 point each and took HOURS. If you miss an exam day because you are sick you cannot retake the exam, instead have to use that exam as one of your drops. Don't take him
only good thing about this class is the 2 dropped exam scores/optional final. the rest is garbage. prof is condescending and rude. doesn't explain properly then people get in class participation q's wrong. tests are hard and homework questions barely make sense. some test averages have been failing and he does not curve. groupme is depressing.
This class takes a lot of adjusting to. The first 2 exams will most likely be your lowest, but your grade will pick up over time. DON'T GIVE UP. Dr. Outomuro has good intentions, but sometimes doesn't execute them in best ways possible. Make a good study routine (I cannot emphasize this enough!!), and only use the book for learning complex topics.
I know there are a lot of bad reviews for this teacher, however for my class we were allowed 2 test drops out of 6. I ended up doing well on the first 4 so I was able to stop going to class and could focus on other classes. However, he is very passive aggressive and has tricky test questions.
I know there are mixed reviews for him, but GO TO HIS OFFICE HOURS. He is more than willing to help and review concepts. His tests were hard, but they were fair and only covered what we learned in lectures and recitations. The homework and top hat questions were helpful in studying for the exams.
Literally, such a pain for Bio 2, take a different professor if you can. Refused to curve even when the average was not passing. Studied all weekend and the week before and exam and still ended up failing it. The only thing that saved me was the drop 1 exam and optional final.
The material itself could have been much easier if not for this professor. He is unapproachable and yelled at the class/individual students at least three times a lecture for lateness or talking. He was not accommodating at all with personal matters (ultimately why I withdrew). Recitation was completely unrelated to exam material and unhelpful.
He is a difficult professor, but not impossible if you are willing to put in the work. He would often be rude towards students when they had questions or were late, when it probably would've been more beneficial for him to just move on with the class. I felt that his general attitude towards the class was slightly arrogant.
as much as I want to give david a lower rating, i can't. he was stuck-up and condescending as a professor BUT if you learn what he looks for in exam questions, you'll be fine. i failed 2/5 exams, but managed to do ok enough in the class because I learned how to understand his questions. and you definitely learn & retain info well in this class
Poorly explains material. Makes tests extremely hard and then blames students for doing bad. There's in-class top hat questions for "participation" but he grades them for correctness as well, so you barely get any credit for participation. There's no homework except a review essay with a partner.
I took him for 8 am morning course and he would expect you to come to class for tophat and in class worksheet. If you miss it you just don't have any points earned. Exams are ridiculously hard and majority are multiple choice so if you screw it up, you screw it up. Three exams one drop and final. Thank god I'm not majoring in bio to take this.
Honestly, Professor Outomuro killed my desire to be a bio major. He's incredibly rude and one of the toughest graders I've had so far. It honestly doesn't make sense the difficulty of the class as it's not even a higher-level elective.
My least favorite class I have taken at Pitt. Attendance is mandatory and there are no drops for attendance even if you are sick. Tests are so hard and expect you to remember almost every slide went over in lectures.
An amazing choice for ecology, would take again, It is worth going to the lectures as there are in-class tophat questions for your participation and worksheets. He explains things so well and the exams were super fair. Mostly multiple choice with some free response questions. He cares about your grade as well(gave easy extra credit points on exams)
his class isn't hard as long as you study the slides. you have to memorize each slide because his test touches upon all the topics he teaches. his lectures are somewhat boring and the participation is annoying because you have to go to almost every class to get all the points. he will help if you go to office hours.
Take Prof. O for Ecology! If you understand the lecture slides (most material was quite easy) and homework, you'll be fine. He and the UTAs have lots of office hours-- he's very friendly and good at explaining everything. A few extra credit opps. The only negative is that you have to attend like 2/3rds of all classes for full participation points.
I really enjoyed this course! There were lots of opportunities to earn points, and you can drop your lowest exam score. The exams were only given from material we covered in lecture, so no surprises! Definitely go to office hours once a week, they really help. Make sure to keep on top of the readings and assignments, since they can pile up.
Attendance is pretty much mandatory to get participation points, tests can get a bit difficult, but all the material are on the slides. Probably one of the better professors in Bio 2
Honestly the class wasn't hard but he was always trying to trick you. He also can be a little passive aggressive and rude. I'm just glad to be done with his class
It's very hard for me to understand him, and his class is laid out very weird. I would not recommend him.
I think some people that are leaving ratings need a reality check that maybe their bad grade is because of them and not the professor. Personally, I had a great time with Dr. Outomuro but you really need to be proactive in his classes. Go to lectures, go to office hours for extra clarification, and review the material slowly each day.
I don't know why he has such a low rating! He is seriously my favorite professor I've ever had. All I did was go to lecture and read through the textbook. He was super accessible outside of class and always went through exams with students. There was plenty of extra credit and his exams could not have been more straightforward. Definitely take him!
He was a nice professor who cared about his students, he wants to help you and has plenty of office hours. Make sure you do all the homework and attend lectures because those points will be worth 25% of your grade. It is do-able, but you need to put work in. He drops a test and the final is optional but could replace your lowest score.
I am terrible at biology and usually hate the class. But Dr.O made it enjoyable to learn. His tests are extremely hard and there is a lot of material to learn. But his office hours are very helpful. I definitely struggled in his class but you just have to put the work in for the grade. Definitely study every week and go to office hours.
I don't mind professor with good/bad rating. I solely rely on studying independently, thus I honestly don't know any negative feedbacks were valid. He replied my emails quickly and he answered my questions without frustration. Also, I liked learning new stuffs, especially ecology. Also, ch.13 and 14 was very fascinating subject.
Didn't dislike him as much as others, but I can see where they come from. Heavier accent, somewhat rude, but available outside class. Homework is weekly, not crazy hard, tests are a little all over the place but manageable. Lectures are extremely boring, but you need to go for participation. You can drop 2 tests including the final. He's whatever.
Dr. O was an ok bio professor. His lectures were long, pretty mundane, and somewhat unhelpful. Most of what I learned was self-study and I mostly came to lecture for the participation points. He drops the two lowest exams of six which was nice, but the exams were a little all over the place. Not hard necessarily, but the questions were odd.
If you are not attending class make sure that you are diligent in answering TopHat questions as they are graded. Study harder for the first few exams as they are easier to score on and it gets harder as the course progresses. You can skip the lowest scores of two exams, finals included. Read the TEXTBOOK and notes thoroughly to score well.
Dr. O was my favorite bio professor I've ever had! He's kind and makes the content easy to digest. All resources you would need to know the material are provided and he's very kind. He's very knowledgeable in ecology and cares about his students. He gives a lot of extra credit opportunity and even brought succulents for his students one day!
He's a really nice professor and he definitely cares about his students. I wouldn't suggest taking the 8am if you plan on skipping because his lectures are really important for understanding. I however did like the class format and really enjoyed ecology with him :)
he is the best choice for ecology. if you read the textbook thoroughly and understand the material on the slides, youre set for an A. there are no tricks on the exams, the questions are straight forward and fair. He also gave us like 6 ec points which helped a lot. graded on 3/4 exams, i did well on the first 3 and didnt take the final
AVOID. This man not only ruined my GPA but also ruined my love for ecology. What a soul crushingly hard class. His exams are doable if you have a lighter load because the detail that you have to know for the exams is insane. There are many easier profs to take ecology with. Very strict grader all exams are on canvas and you never have enough time.
Outomoro provides so many opportunities for extra credit and wiggle room for grade make-up. Get to drop 1 exam including the final which is not cumulative. I found his tests challenging, no matter how much studying I did, and I'm usually an A+ student in bio. You can tell he likes Bio 2 > Ecology, but solid choice; a bit harsh with accommodations.
Although Dr. Outomuro is passionate about Bio 2, his tests are very difficult and need a lot of studying to go through. A lot of effort goes into this class. Make sure to go to lectures. 6 exams including final, 2 drops. Has some homework, gives some extra credit. Make sure that this professor is not your first option.
Honestly, I do not understand why he has such a low rating. He is such a sweet professor and clearly wants his students to do well. He was easily accessible over email and responded fast. I will say his exams were pretty difficult, but if you study well it should not be an issue. Office hours were so helpful so I recommend going to those.
Dr. O is incredibly kind and does genuinely care about his students, but his exams are incredibly out of pocket. Bio2 material is not hard and yet his exam questions make me question if we ever even learned it. Lots of homework but its only worth 1.5 points each, and graded Tophat in class. 6 exams total and 2 drops, no curve or extra credit.
Grade is basically made up of 4 exams. There are 6 in total and you can drop 2 but it doesn't even matter because his exams are so hard. Gives a bit of extra credit at the end which is nice but it doesn't make up for the exams.
Dr. O is a kind professor who seems to care about his students' success, but his tests are entirely unreasonable and unfair to be given the weight of 80% of our grade. I would go to class and understand the material, but his tests would often look like a foreign language to me. Despite taking full advantage of office hours I am hardly passing.
Reading the textbook and doing his study guides before exams is so important for your success in this class. You truly need to put in a lot of work to be able to get a good grade. His exams are extremely specific on topics barely discussed in class, hence why reading the textbook is vital. Overall, he cares about the students and is willing to help
The lectures did not explain how to use the material being taught, it merely explained what concepts were. The tests were granular in detail, and they were given every 2 weeks. If asked to explain things, he and the TAs would not do so clearly.
I loved this class and Dr. O as a professor. He is great at teaching all subjects and his notes are super organized. His class is set up so that missing a lecture or two won't hurt your grade (but definitely go anyway) and if you aren't a good test taker you can still get a good grade. He is super helpful outside of class, too.
I definitely recommend Dr. O, although there were a lot 6 exams you are able to drop 2 of them including the final. His lectures were recorded and once you figure out his question style and keep up with the topics you will be fine. Definitely need to study but way better than the other bio professors.
Dr. O is not mean, just very sassy. His lectures are appropriately in-depth and recorded. The only caveat is that there are 6 exams, all of which are very detailed (only the highest 4 are included in your grade). You need to know everything that is on his slides. There's a definite learning curve, just memorize the slides and you'll be okay.
Dr. O is always rooting for you. He wants you to learn and do well in his course. He is always available at office hours and explains topics so it is easy to understand. He offers extra credit and 2 exams dropped. His course is hard but not impossible, you just have to put more work in like any other science class.
If you ended with a bad grade in this class, it's probably because you didn't study enough, the professor is sweet, accessible, and there to help. There are six exams total with two drops, including an option to drop the final. Do the achieve textbook questions on top of review to prep for the exam, they help a lot!! Not too hard, just study.
The tests are very specific on what he says in class and slides. Sometimes he talks a little too fast during lecture so do notes before class and take notes on what he says during lecture. Do achieve problems before tests. Office hours are very helpful. Overall, he is overhated and is very kind if you are too.
I don't know why RMP removed my review but - his tests only contain what was taught in lecture and is super achievable to get an A in his class. Just study all the slides in depth as well as the recitation activities. Also, he gives EC, drops 2 tests, and gives a lot of buffer points. I am looking forward to taking ecology with him next semester.
Dr. O does not deserve his low rating. He's passionate about teaching and gets excited when students ask questions and show improvement. People say he is sassy because he calls them out if they talk during lecture, but this is appreciated by students who are trying to listen. With the right amount of effort, it is very possible to succeed.
Weekly homework questions were hard, but he lets you drop some. His tests are very hard. You will have to memorize everything on the slides to get every detailed questions on tests. Good thing is that final is optional.
He seems like a good person and I don't think he deserves such a low rating as he is still better than 90% of the professors in say, the math or physics department. However, this isn't an easy class and you pretty much have to memorize every word on the lecture slides to do well. Also required attendance and a lot of group work.
I loved Dr.O! Only gives exams on lecture material and questions basically just come from the slides. He gives extra credit and hes super nice and genuinely cares. He is also a very good lecturer in my opinion.
He's a good professor and seems like a good person, however be aware participation is required. I received around 90 on all of my exams, did all the homework, and still will likely end with an A- due to missing a few classes. If you plan on missing more than 2-3 classes, he may not be the best option for you
I don't think Dr. O was a bad professor at all. The exams are decently tough, but as long as you take notes and study, especially from the lectures, you should be fine. Dr. O does really care about his students and wants to make sure that they understand the content. He loves questions as well. Overall he's great! Don't let the bad reviews fool you
The difficulty on exams is just too much. You literally have to know so many details, that if you have other tough classes with this one, you will struggle big time on exams. His grading on the exams, especially the graphs, are also super harsh and you will get lots of points taken off each one if not answered 100% correct.
75% of your grade is exams which wouldn't be bad if we were given back our in class worksheets to study and see where we went wrong or even answers to the study guides practice problems. Exam difficulty was okay but he definitely thinks they're easier than they are.
Dr. O is very funny and kind, making this class even more enjoyable. The course material is definitely interesting but gets into physics a bit at the end, so it helps if you have taken that before. This is an upper-level bio class but is worth taking if you need a bio elective.
Uses flipped classroom a LOT. I feel like he does this to take points away if you don't show up to class which is very frustrating for an 8 am. DO NOT TAKE IF U LIKE SLEEPING IN. Otherwise he's a totally great prof.
Super nice guy! Material was interesting and easy to understand. There are textbook readings but I didn't do them. Weekly HW that is a canvas quiz (2 attempts). 4 exams and get to drop lowest (no final). Exams are fair and mostly MC. Many flipped classes where you do HW before class then do a WS in groups in class. Extra points built in as buffer.
You must review the textbook and use adaptive quizzes to score near a 90+ on the exams. You must utilize all resources to get an A and spend 10-15 hours per week on the content. All this being said, you can drop 2/5 of exams including the final which is a good fallback and allows you to get used to his style which is case study heavy.
literally awful, no matter how much studying you do for these tests it will NEVER be enough. tests questions and answers are so insanely detailed that no one ever knows the answer. if you can take a different professor please save yourself and do it. TA's do not help nor do they know anything - numerous times they told me wrong answers. DO NOT TAKE
Save yourself and take literally anyone else. He expects way too much out of students and wants you to dedicate all of your time to this course. Like cut me a break. You are expected to master the material immediately to understand what is being asked on his ridiculous exams. Honestly he is just doing the most.
David truly is a really nice guy, but his exams are impossible. I couldn't pass one to save my life despite increasing the amount of time I spent studying every single time. Even when the content got easier, my grades unfortunately did not come close to reflecting the effort I was putting into this course.
His exams are difficult and unfair. There are 6 total exams and you can drop 2, but everyone fails the first exam so that's a guaranteed drop. He gives exams every 2 weeks and somehow comes up with 45 questions each time. Some of the questions are so specific that it would be impossible for you to remember the information.
you need to do everything possible to get a good grade so he really helps shape your habits as a student. go to office hours, actively learn in lecture, the full 9 yards.
Dr. O is a great person and he is always willing to help if you ask. His exams are pretty difficult and focus on a lot of details but he also has many extra points with help boost your grade.
He actually is not a bad professor and cares. His lectures are good. But oh my goodness his test are terrible. It is inevitable that you will run into multiple questions where you just won't know the answer no matter how much you prepare. Got an A in bio 1 and I prepared more for this class but grades never reflected. Good teacher, exams are awful
Dr. O would not be my first pick. His exams are SO specific and test you on small details that are hard to remember. Use the office hours from the UTAs and go to every recitation you can to collect your points. His exams were unfair and should be less specific. Overall, Dr. O would not be my first pick for Bio 2.
Hes nice, but I could not even manage to get near a good grade after studying more than I have ever studied. I have never gotten a C before and i really struggled to even get that in this class. I would recommend finding someone else. sometimes it feels like there is a part of his question that is in invisible ink bc i swear they never make sense.
He is NOT a good professor, as previous ratings and students had said. Dr. Priede's lectures are very in-depth, and he talks a lot. His exams are very specific, so minor details matter. In his class, he does not curve even though the majority of the class is failing, and he is no help to those who need to pass. Avoid taking him at all costs.
I have never put in so much work for a class and not gotten fair results back. I studied a lot for the exams, and no matter how much you study, the grade never changes. He needs to be less specific and his exams are unfair. His exams are also heavily weighted, and his homework/recitations are nothing compared to his exams. AVOID HIM AT ALL COSTS!
Dr. O's lectures are very in-depth and you're expected to memorize every detail, which is difficult when you have other difficult courses at the same time. Studied so much for my highest test grade to be an 84 -- no amount of studying can prep you for some of the questions he asks on tests. He's also passive aggressive in office hours and lecture.
It's a shame because I really like the guy and he is a great professor, however his exams are terrible. Studying a lot and being very prepared will not be enough be for some of the questions on his test. Includes many trick questions and unimportant to content questions. If you care about your grade just avoid taking him.
Dr. O is honestly one of the kindest and funniest professors I've had and he truly cares about students. His tests were just really hard and no matter how much studying or tutoring you did you still would average around the same score. His tests had complex application questions that are way more complex and detailed than his lecture slides.

He knows a lot but moves quickly through hard topics i did not like his attitude and sass. There are 5 exams (including the final), but only your best 3 count. The first and last (not final) are the easiest. If you ace the first 3, you can skip the 4th and final. Exams are tough—actually read the textbook before and after class, and you'll do well.
Dr. O is a really great professor. I will say, his tests/recitation sheets are pretty specific but the tests are basically all multiple choice so if you know the material well enough, the tests aren't bad. Only three out of the five count, including the final, so it's pretty much optional. HW, recitation, and attendance points are all easy 100s
Dr. O shows great care to his students and wants everyone to succeed. The course is taught using a textbook but just reading the lecture slides and doing practice problems and homework is enough. Exams align well with lecture and recitation material and there are tons of extra bonus points built in for exams, homework, recitation, and attendance.
Great professor and you can tell he cares a lot about what he is teaching. A lot of extra credit, office hours are very helpful, and great study guides for practice. Exams were definitely difficult but not impossible just very conceptual. Overall great professor.
David is SO SWEET he truly cares about all his students. Me and my classmates were so surprised with how rude these rating were bc he truly gave his students all the resources needed for tests. He loves what he does and his lectures are not boring. I love this man and would recommend anyone to take him. You also get to drop 2 of 5 tests!! TAKE HIM!
if there is another professor possible, TAKE THEM! dr. o is a nice guy, but his tests are borderline IMPOSSIBLE. i don't know how he expects students to remember every little detail given in a lecture or recitation. you will have to study as much as possible in order to pass his class, so be prepared. read the textbook and study EARLY.
Dr. O is a great good and a very knowledgable professor. His exams are very difficult, but bio 2 is difficult in general. Start studying for his exams really early because they are entirely application questions. He is only sassy when people are being rude and disrupting class.
Dr. O is kind and wants the best for his students. His lectures were good and the worksheets helped to break information down. However, his tests are hard and mostly application based. He does allow you to drop 2 of 5 tests, including the final, which is very generous. Study early for tests and go to office hours to ask questions.
He gets so much hate, and for what? The class IS hard, and I studied a lot (5-6 hours per exam). I only took 4 exams of 6 since my grade was high enough (you only need 3). The PCR exam is the hardest for sure, and I failed, but I got good grades on all the other ones, so don't get discouraged. You don't have to read, but it helps to study.
Dr O is very nice and he deserves a better rating. His notes are very clear and he did review sessions in class before each test, which were very helpful. He gave 2 points extra credit on every test, and other extra credits (i got 5). His tests are hard but fair, if you really understand the material you would be fine. Go to class and recitations!!
Dr. O is amazing! Clear slides, fair exams (from slides), fast replies, super sweet in office hours. Recitations are group-based & kinda weird—one made me cry lol, so work well with your group. Overall great prof, made Bio2 way better the second time. TAKE HIM!
Failed taking him the first time and got an A- retaking him. He gives great lectures, but his exams are so freaking hard and often times don't even relate to what we learned. Exams make up the majority of the grade. I put in 8+ hours of work a week in and it still wasn't enough. Although, Bio2 is really boring to me which made it a struggle.
Pretty nice guy, but exams are cruel. His recitations will not prepare you for them either, as there not really review. His lectures are okay, but the exams are what will tank you.
Worst professor I've ever taken. You think you know exactly what's going on and then you go to take the exams and he makes the questions 100 times harder than they have to be. His recitations did not help whatsoever. DO NOT TAKE HIM.
Dr. O is very passionate about ecology. He is very accessible and willing to help his students. Tough class, count 3 out of 4 exams, no final. Many in-class worksheets so do go to class. Enough inflation space if you have to miss though. Overall recommend!
Tests are literally impossible. Horrible study guides + refuses to give answer keys to anything, horrible feedback-only suggests brain maps. Everything is accuracy. Admitted no one has gotten 40/52 + on his exams. Heavily graded off of 4 exams (u get to drop your lowest), extra credit is rare and useless. Yells at us when nobody has any questions.
Bored to death every class period - tests were also disgustingly hard
absolutely ruined my gpa - take it with any other prof. these tests are made for someone who already has a doctorate in ecology and no curves when so many of us are failing !!
if you want happiness in ur life and not to be tortured over tests do not take this class
he took away any hope i had for stem. i absolutely loved ecology and conservation but i will never again consider this path in life
He clearly cares sm about the course and the students, but if u want an A or to even pass this class with any ease at all, this is not the class for u. The exams were sm harder than any study material given, and u never have a benchmark for open-ended responses until u find out it's not enough on the exam.MCQs are way more in-depth than practiced.
This is my third time taking Dr. O, and I always loved his classes every time. His tests are literally from just the slides, and he gives a lot of opportunities for extra points. He is also great at clarifying things in his OH. His RMP rating is definitely not representative of his actual teaching skill, and I would rate him a 5/5 every time.
I have gotten an A in Bio 1, Bio 2, Chem 1, and Chem 2 and have never taken exams this hard in my life. Went to him to ask how to study better and was told I am not failing so I shouldn't be too worried. Avoid at literally all costs.
tests were so god damn impossible, passed by a scratch would heavily NOT recommend - regardless of how you did in pre-reqs, this class is sm harder for no reason. content is fun but the questions on the exams are nowhere near what he prepares you for. take with any other professor if you can - it could be the difference bewteen passingh and failing
I literally prayed to die every night because of this class
