boring
Cool-Let us watch vids, but often TALKS to the point that you just go crazy.
Class was easy because it is English 101, but this guy is a jerk! He is very rude to students and goes out of his way to make them feel stupid! He made a girl almost cry the first day
this is probably one of the better teachers on campus and it's not because he is the coolest guy but it's because he tells you straight up what he demands from you and he explains his lesson in depth. just do what he says how he says and you'll be fine.
Mr. Overly isn't exactly a fun guy, but he is very clear. I never felt lost in his class. This class is good for people who have a solid bass in english, and just need to get credit for their GED. However if you need alot of assitance, don't take this class. I would recommend his once a week class.
his class was SO boring. i couldn't pay attention, never wanted to come to class, the work was predictable and i didn't learn anything. also, he read aloud a lot and has a monotone voice. it was supposed to be creative writing, but we only wrote one story and modified it to death!
Mr. Overly is VERY good at English, so if you are expecting to take an English class where you can pass off half rate work and still get a decent grade, this isn't it. However, if you are a decent student and desire to learn he's a great professor.
Mr. Overly is a great teacher, but could be boring at times. Just do the work he gives you and you will pass the class. You do watch a lot of movies. Some intresting, but some will put you to sleep. I would take Mr. Overly again.
I took his class and hated it, he has an apparent dislike of adjunct teachers and seems to think that English the most important thing. If you are just lookin to get through you english class this is not the teacher for you
The only class in my College career that i actually disliked going to, rather than spend anytime learning the art of writing we wasted important class time reading from a book that was dry like a desert, and watching stupid ass videos. Also rather than read any poetry or anything from an accomplished and respected writer, we had to sit through hearing him read his own (5 minutes of fame) garble, which impressed me about as much as a man beating his head against the cement, at least he would be entertaining
I consistently fell asleep during EVERY video he showed, and he showed a lot of them. Maybe I have narcolepsy, but I think it's because they're BORING. Also, he reads aloud from the textbook in monotone. I do not recommend taking his class.
Professor Overly is one who truly knows his subject. He is interested in sharing his knowledge with his students. He does show films in class but I personally enjoyed them. He encourages comments from the class and he communicates well. As far as hot, well....he is the classic professor studious type!BUt that makes him cuter!
I dont know why he has so many bad ratings on here! he is not a bad guy at all!!! you watch alot of movies in his class, and he doesnt assign hard homework just questions for reading (poetry, short stories) you can even fill them in while he goes over them in class and he doesnt care! he extended the date of our research paper due date 2 times!!
Just finished his class. In response to the comments below, his class is easy, its once a week. Yes, some of the movies are boring but I would not have ever watched them, if not for the class. My fav was Wit, and betrayal. He encouraged work to be turned in on time, but the last half, he said he would accept all late work up to the last day.
TOOO MANY MOVIES. HE WAS BORING DRY EYE GUY. HE HAD PAPER EVERYWHERE WHICH HE READ FROM FOR LEC. I DROPPED HIS CLASS, BUT IN FALL I NEED IT TO TRANSFER TO APU. HE LETS U LEAVE AT 9PM ONLY GOOD THING. ONLY TOOK ONE QUIZ AND HE IS ENGLISH TEACHER SO EXPECTS U TO KNOW HOW TO WRITE.
by far BEST teacher I've ever had. Very easy going, accepts late homework all the time. Very nice person.
If you go to class and be consistent with the homework and paper you will pass the class. I thought he was a good teacher in the sense that his ciriculum was interesting to me.
Everything about this class is straight forward. If you can memorize 50 flash cards, then you can ace the final and midterm. The in-class essay is the hardest part and if you can get a "C" in this segment, you can still get an "A" overall if you attend all sessions and ace the two other tests. Stimulating class, not secularized or religious.
Wonderful teacher! He really made English fun by showing movies that helped give us a better idea on what type of Drama we were studying. I never felt bored in that class. Professor Overly is a very kind man and is willing to help his students. His class isn't too difficult but it also isn't a class that should be taken lightly!
Overly utilizes films to convey ideas and thoughts about cultural & social issues. Make sure you have the skills to write a deductive essay and research paper. If you enjoy & appreciate literature then you'll enjoy his course.
very good teacher. he really enjoys english and conveys it to his class very well. just go to class know and write deductive essays and complete the very simple homework
Great teacher.
I don't know if some of these ratings are made up but they are way off. If you want an easy grade DON'T take him. Expects way too much from essay's. Took his class since I read that he was easy, WRONG! Very dry as a teacher, the only reason he puts those videos are so he won't talk to his students. Take somebody else.
Excellent professor. Be prepared to complete your homework and paper assignments. Dr. Overly is easy to understand and he really knows his subject very well. He will frequently point out the details in the reading assignments which makes everything easier to understand. Walk into his class with a positive attitude and willingness to learn...
Grades entirely on Grammar. If you dont have perfect grammar he will fail you. You watch alot of movies.. very boring. Monotone voice. Wouldn't recommend him.
This dude is a great professor. If you put forward a great effort, he will work with you. Show up and do the work. He explains things great. Highly recommended.
Professor Overly is great. He is very helpful and his class was fun. we watched a few movies in class and he is easy to understand. I thought the higher the English, the harder the class. Wrong. English 100 was twice as hard as 103. Take this instructor!
Professor Overly was great in this class. Just do the work and he'll work with you. This was Film As Literature and wasn't boring at all. However, he is serious about you learning the material. I am disabled and he was extremely helpful.
He is not the most interesting or exciting person, but his class is pretty straight forward. He tells you exactly what he wants in the papers. He tries to make thing like the timed essay, a little easier. He will go over them in class and show videos to help. I can't say I didn't get bored, but yet again it was a late class 7pm-10pm
WOW.... I don't know why there are so many good ratings on this page! It's not just me, just about EVERYBODY I talk to in my class agrees! He is boring, he rambles on about irrelevant things. Anything he hands out, whether it be a sample 5 page essay or a short syllabus, expect him to read every word to you! hw is easy, papers are difficult!
Overley is a great guy who is always eager to help his students. i admit that the in class essays are a little intimidating but not that difficult. We watch many movies about the strories we read and they do help in understanding the story. Overall great guy but dont expect an easy A cuz u have to earn it
Fantastic! This class is great considering it's critical thinking. He is an awesome professor and he's very clear about what he expects. He is a students teacher. He empathizes with the research paper....woot woot!!! I highly recommend this class and professor!!!
think of me as the easy going guy. his class is so easy and all i did was sit in the back and listen to my ipod while watching boring movies. homework is easy, the final test is easy, but the 3 papers are the only hard thing because the nod about him is that he is a picky grader. I passed with an A! hes pretty chill too so take him!
AWESOME PROFESSOR & easy grader. He is unlike other harsh grading professors in that he knows the stress students go through. Therefore, he grades easier & in return, students are more willing to actually learn. If you're going to a class only to see a crap faced professor who is very strict, I don't think you'd have the motivation to want to learn
The workload is rather laid back. Just do all of the homework and attend for points. The in-class essays aren't as bad as they seem. Just make the research paper amazing and you have an easy A. I got one so you can.
He assigns questions to be answered about different poems and stories (he just checks if you've written something). He has 2 in class essays and 1 research paper. If you ask him to check over your paper before you turn it in and correct it, you will get a higher grade. Extremely easy class; didn't learn much about English though.
I am a working, father of 2, student. Overly was great for what I was capable of. His homework is a breeze, and the in-class essays were easy if you read the stories (which are under 10 pages long usually at max).He is a bit sarcastic, but that's what I appreciated about him because he doesn't tolerate B.S. Don't text in class he will call you out.
AWESOME TEACHER! EASY AND UNDERSTANDABLE! BEST ENGLISH TEACHER.
Great professor! Very helpful and he likes those who speak up and participate in class. Watched a lot of movies about the literature we read. Weekly questions about the readings, 2 in class essays and 1 research paper, gives extra credit too.
i took his eng 103 this semester and actually i dont think i learned a lot from this class. he is a kind of humorous and patient.his research paper is the most important in his class which may decide the final grade.
He's a good teacher. Basically lays out the entire essay format for you several times through the span of the semester. If you work in his class and try to learn you'll dojust fine.
I enjoyed taking his class, he's an easy going guy. You read a lot of short stories & write four essays a semester. You are required to write a research paper and if you don't, you will fail the class. Overall, it's not an easy class nor is it a hard class, just put in some effort& you'll get a good grade.
Great professor! I am not a native english speaker and had difficulty writing in english. I never received a grade better than a C, before I took him. He is really easy and lenient. I took him for my Eng. 101 and 103. I got a B and A. He is the BEST!
Really good professor! I was horrible at analyzing text but he makes literature concepts really easy to grasp. He's really easy going just show up to class and turn in your assignments. He's really clear about what he wants and will help you out.
AWESOME CLASS FOR THE SUMMER SEMESTER..LOTS OF TIME TO DO YOUR FINAL RESEARCH PAPER...IF YOU ASK, HE WILL HELP YOU.
I'll admit Dr. Overly is a little intimidating to approach. However, if you make the effort to go to office hours to ask for help, he'll give you as much advice about succeeding in his class as he can. He really doesn't like it when students don't show up to class though, and he takes attendance everyday to make sure you're there. Just do the work
He seems like an alright guy, I just didn't like how the class is structured. The class was a bit of a chore to attend. I'm not into literary analysis, so the class wasn't particularly interesting to me.
Highly recommend taking his class during winter term. Had him last winter and received an A. Just show up, do the homework, as well as the research paper, and TAKE ADVANTAGE of the extra credit! Overall he was a great professor. Oh and during winter the only exam you have is your final, but the other 3 writing essays are writing in blue books.
His class is so boring, especially if you take his class at nighttime. You watch movies almost every week, some are interesting but others are just a waste of time. Overall it's an easy, chill class, because you have 2 in class essays and 1 final research paper.
This professor can be a bit moody but overall its one of the easiest classes I have ever taken. You watch a movie a week, read from the book and answer questions that you must have done before class because he will call on random people to answer them!
He is a great professor. I did not know what to expect of him; however, I found this class to be easier than the last time I took with someone different. He helps you understand more deeply the meaning of literature. However, if you don't ask questions you will never understand.
This is a truly burnt out teacher. He has a very monotone voice and reads entire 7-8 page research papers at once, not realizing how limited our attention span is. The class itself was not very interesting, watched lots of movies. Overall, very easy A!! Attendance, 4 papers, and even extra credit will be where your grade comes from.
Although he is very dry and monotone as people put it, he is a great professor. If you go to his office hours to get additional help with your research paper, it makes it even better. He is point based when it comes to grading.
Will watch lots of movies in this course. Weighs the essays heavily, but does not prepare students for the essays. Expects students to know what he wants in his essays, but fails to consider that everyone had different English 101 teachers. Also, he deducts too much on grammatical errors, as the course is suppose to be a critical thinking course.
Great instructor, helpful if you ask for help. You watch movies and he gets into the readings which I found entertaining. He does grade heavily on the exams, final and essays but honestly it's doable. You have to put in work on the last essay. GO to class and do the work and you can pull off an B or an A.
great professor, class is based on points just attend class,do the essays and any extra credit he offers do it those are easy points.Other than that alot of movies are watched which is the downside, but overall its an easy class just have to be really determined when taking him. I highly recommend attending to SI,it will make everything 10x easier:)
I absolutely enjoyed this professor! he was super helpful every time. he can be intimidating at first because he's very straight forward but really teaches the concepts in analyzing short stories. he grades at college level so if your not as good in writing like myself don't expect to pass without putting in any effort. overall great professor!!!
Prof. Overly is very laid back, almost too laid back. His lectures are extremely boring and long-winded. The hardest part of the class is sitting through the lectures. The work he assigns is relatively easy and his essay requirements are less than those that other teachers might assign. I'm glad I won't have to take his class again.
He was a okay Professor . Very boring and you watch films for most of the time. His English 103 class consist of 3 essays and a research paper, plus some assignments here and there. He is not very clear on what he wants on the essays and can be rude to students especially if you ask for help. Lectures dry but easy final.
Strict professor but it's a tough course so takes notes, must attend class to learn, do your extra credits yo help your grade, essays are by memory and tough so study and study. Turn of your cell phones, you will get dismissed. Need the book, and work hard!!!! Not an easy class but it shouldn't be.

Overly is not an engaging professor. He provides you with all of the information you need to complete the assigned work. He is a lenient grader and gives good feedback. Do the extra credit to catch up on any missed points. I do love that he shuts down students that text in class or show up late. College should be taken seriously.
He expects you to already know what he's talking about, and grades very tough on the papers, his lectures are long and boring so getting threw them is hard, and if you ask for help he'll most likely be rude
Great professor if you're already an adept writer and just want the easy A. Show up to class, do the very basic homework, and put some effort into the papers and you'll pass with flying colors. That being said I didn't learn much, so if you're looking for an engaging class you'll get a lot out of, this isn't it.
Prof. Overly may seems a bit cold, standoffish and serious, but if you ask for the help, he is there to help. I went to his office hours a couple times and he will take the time to go over your work. Picky when it comes to punctuation, but he gives his students plenty of time to revise essays. Act like you care and show effort, you'll get an A.
I gotta say Professor Overly is very straightforward, you know exactly what is expected of you from the course. If you do all the work, you'll pass in flying colors.
Peace Studies interested me so I had no trouble paying attention to his lectures but they were long sometimes. He is serious but he's kind and pretty lenient. Most of the time in his class was spent watching documentaries. But the final was in class essays and a good grade maintained through this course can drop easily if you aren't good at essays.
Took dr. Overly for my winter term, super chill if your are willing to put in the effort. Graded the essay exams and research paper remotely easy. Also offered up to 70 points in extra credit if you were willing to do some extra reading. Overall, his lectures were boring and not stimulating but if you're in it just for the credits it's an easy A
The best thing about him is he is very realistic! He will tell you how important it is to learn how to write, format, etc. I am currently taking ENG 103 with another professor and I miss him! He really explained everything! & answered any questions we had! & if you want to be engaged in class then you obviously have to participate!
Worst professor Ive had at Citrus. Hes mean & if you ask for help he is going to be rude. Class consists of 3 in class essays & a research paper. I have a good grade in the class so this is not me just whining. He is just awful. Do not take him unless you wanna leave every class in a bad mood.
If you attend all class sessions, do all your homework assignments, and in-class essay tests and research paper, you should easily pass with a C or better. He gives extra credits towards the end of the terms. However, he can be condescending when asking questions and he put you on blast if you are on your phone or talk during his time.
If you try you will pass this class, his grading is a little harsh but it helps you get better. He reads to you in class and the the in class essays are super easy. I would deff take his class again.
Mr. Overly is very laid back and very intelligent. In the Peace Study class, there is little daily homework. His main goal is that he wants you to learn. I learned so much in his class and felt very inspired by many of the topics and films. You primarily get points for exams which are essays, attendance, and a paper.
Great!
He is an awesome professor.
Lectures don't really relate to what you're reading, he sort of goes off on tangents. A lot of in class essays, and he's an extremely difficult grader. Also, he's boring and shows dated boring movies. This class is rouuuugh to get through.
Professor Overly is friendly and takes his class seriously. He hands out plenty of helpful pamphlets and example essays. His lectures are easy to understand and criteria are clear. He is helpful especially if you put the extra effort in. Lectures are long.
we watch short old movies on the books we will be reading he hands out so much paper which is not eco friendly but overall he is a good professor
He was a super chill English professor. Gives great feedback and is very clear about what he expects from you. He almost always stays after class in case you have any additional questions. We watched a lot of old school movies but they were pretty cool and helped us understand the old literature. Lets you make up work
He is a no nonsense man. There was one assignment a week and two essays in my class. When you turn in essays he will give you feedback if you want it. I didn't have any zoom meetings with him so I don't know how he is in person. He was clear and direct with the assignments.
Everything about this class was really easy and there were no zoom lectures provided. Your exams would be essays, so if you mess up on your first essay, ask him for feedback!
Enjoyed Dr. Overly's class on Intro to peace online. He gives one paper a week that is usually supported by some form of literature or movie you must watch. Some of the movies are great, some are boring, however he gives you the information you need to get the job done. Bottomline, take him for Humanities. He's reasonable, fair, and gives you time.
The weekly assignments are generic soapstone and he provides no lectures. And yet, the essays take up nearly 90% of the grade. He never provides any feedback and is always unaccessable. The only textbook is the one he wrote, and is just a compilation of short stories. Can not reccomend.
You should take this class if you want an easy A to fulfill a GE credit. But be warned; there is no critical thinking to be done in this class. Everything is fed to you through watching movies every day and answering questions he answers for you at the end of the film. If you're majoring in Peace Studies, don't expect a fulfilling experience.
professor overly is very smart and i loved hearing what he had to say about a lot of different topics. his class was not hard. it consisted of reading a story, watching the film adaptation, then having a discussion. all the stories are very interesting! easy to track assignments, i believe 2 essays and a literature term exam. ez class! recommend!
