Not an easy class, but I have never, ever had a better professor. Paradis really wants you to do well, and is extremly friendly. Words cannot express the gratitude I have had for him this semester! Please take a class from him...it is worth the effort! Just be prepared to read some difficult books.

Wonderful. If you want to actually learn about the subject and be challenged while doing so, Paradis is the man. If you want to loaf through college and become a walking head for the real-world, avoid. Extremely helpful and willing to devote personal time to students' problems. A+
Taking a class from Paradis was ridiculous, if I was sick during the semester and missed a class he would never help me to attain the notes that would help me to catch up to the rest of the class. The books were very difficult and the quizzes and tests were very hard. The quizzes had questions that were very vague, same as the exams.
as long as you read the material that was assigned and took lecture notes, there were no "surprise expectations" in the class. the final paper was fun to write... or maybe i am just a loser.
There's a heck of a lot of reading, but he's a great guy and really willing to help you out
Very down to earth and entertaining to learn from. I definitely recommend him!
There was an awful lot of very dense reading, but Dr. Paradis himself was interesting and helpful. The study guides for quizzes were a huge help for the quizzes themselves, which were a huge help for the exams. Be prepared to watch your writing mechanics VERY closely. It's not the easiest course, but also not unreasonably hard.
One of the best professors I've had. Went to great lengths to help me understand test and assignment materials. The class was difficult, but he made it accessible through his lectures. A very friendly, approachable instructor.
Hands down best teacher I've had at CU. Brilliant and helpful. I would take any class offered by him. Attend class and take notes and there are no surprises in the course.
I've never worked so hard in a level 1000 class to get such a poor grade. His quizzes were completely unreasonable and impossible. It seems some people do really well and some people do horrible. Maybe he's just trying to keep that C+ average... Either way, I am a hard-working student and I found David's grading ridiculous.
Dr. Paradis is one of the coolest i have ever had! he is really into what he teaches and is willing to help if you just go and ask him. i would recommend him to anyone!!!
There is an excessive amount of work and reading not just for an intro level class, but for any class. He is one of those teachers that likes to prove to you how smart he is by giving you poor grades and he has you come in and talk to him to "fix it" but really I think he is just lonely. Don't take this class.
Very difficult readings and the class was paced impossibly slow. He is very friendly, but not really helpful if you have been sick at all (as I was throughout most of the semester). His exams and "quizzes" are impossible!
Great teacher! Not too hard, easy quiz/essay formats. You can tell he is passionate about his work.
hardest 1000 level class ive ever taken. Never did I expect to do so much reading. Tests and quizzes are made for students to do poorly and keep a C plus average. He lectures all class and doesnt put much information on the powerpoints. He expects you to learn from what he says in the lecture but always rambles off on things that arent on the test.
This class was hard for absolutely no reason. It felt as though he was doing a case study on medieval torture with the readings he assigned. The Quizzes and were always a crapshoot as to material. Although he gave a study guide there was no guarantee that it would help.
He made the class waaaaaayyyyy harder than it needed to be. I did every reading and participated in class yet still only got a C. He also lost students' papers. I would not recommend taking History 2112 with David Paradis.
One of my favorite professors. He is interested in the material, thus making it fun to learn.
Doesn't put a lot of information on his slides but overall, if you come to class and take notes you should do fine! The quizzes and tests are pretty regular so they don't cover too much material at once and the questions are almost always on things he's emphasized. He also loves the material which helps!
Very reading-based class, but as long as you take notes and keep up with the lectures and reading the quizzes are a breeze. Definitely a bit of work to keep up, but Paradis remains one of my favorite professors to this day. I learned a lot and still look fondly on this class.
He was a very nice, helpful professor. Sometimes he would silly pun-type joke, but you smiled because its endearing. He was helpful and answered questions straight forwardly. I would highly recommend.
He grades papers like an english teacher not a history teacher. Beware
He is a funny guy, great personality, but boy is he a hard grader. You'll be reading and writing about the hardest topic you'll ever study. Even if you attend every class he will still give you a D or F for participation if you do not talk about the impossible readings. Goodluck
He is a tough grader, and the material is boring i wouldn't recommend taking his class at all
He is a very tough grader and expects a lot out of his students. However, this is because he will help with whatever a person needs on their tests or papers. With my research paper he wasn't very fond of how I organized the rough draft, so he made and gave me an outline for it. If you're willing to work hard, take his class.
Attendance is not mandatory unless you want to keep your grade up with participation points. He has clicker points each class and even if you answer them correctly you still can somehow never get 100% participation. He also grades papers very roughly. Definitely do not take this if you aren't willing to spend all your time doing assigned readings.
DO NOT TAKE A CLASS WITH DAVID PARADIS! he's a ridiculously hard grader and doesn't care about his students. I didn't miss a single class but got a 65% in participation simply because I had answered clicker questions wrong.
He's a very challenging teacher, and he's the hardest grader I've ever had in my college career, even for a summer course. He demands a lot of reading. I do not recommend taking his classes.
This is hardest summer class I have ever taken. He treats this class like it's a 4000 level class. The readings are almost impossible. The participation grade in the class is bogus and should give more credit to the kids that actually come to class. DO NOT TAKE A CLASS WITH HIM!
Do not take this class with him.
I think he expects a lot from his students, but they also need to understand the summer session is naturally much more intense because of the time constraint. If you are really interested in history you should absolutely take this class. His lectures are in depth and interesting . An overall fantastic teacher for people who want to learn.
Harsh Grader.
I was taking 5 classes, History 1113 was the most time-consuming. Mind you, I was also taking business classes the same semester. I had to read more than in my reading class, and he graded harder on my paper than my writing professor. He's a nice guy, but it's too much. He should use a textbook instead of those boring, difficult to understand books
I was interested in British History before taking this class. There's so much reading to do! Like other students before me, I suggest not taking him. His power points aren't helpful. It's too time consuming. This class should've been worth 4 credits.
For a 1000 level course this is unreal. the amount of reading is decent but the primary sources he assigns are straight impossible to comprehend. The textbook seems like a good platform but he testquizzes on things that aren't in the textbook.. (What?) the primary sources are written in original languages so good luck understanding what they mean
Unclear, unhelpful, dismissive and rude. The first time in six years of college that I've felt the need to discuss a professor for negative reasons. Hopefully it will help future students stay away from him.
For a 1000-level history course, it was very hard. You really have to pay attention in lecture and work hard on the reading quizzesessays. I feel like I put in enough time and effort for an A, but I ended up with a B. He let's you know up front that he isn't an easy grader and he means it. He gives really good feedback though.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS! Spent Couple hours on one paper and received a 65 with NO COMMENTS! Then, bs'd my final paper that was due, absolutely read ZERO from the book and received a B+. quizzes are absolutely stupid ridiculous for an intro course!! Look at the other reviews if your not a firm believer yet that this class blowsssssss!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This is not the class you seek. Avoid this guy at all cost. This man is a very old school/subjective grader.
He's the person I aspire to be.
He grades very hard. I am a Biochem major and this class was my lowest grade. The final is pretty BS he gives you two essay topics and a list of terms, which sounds easy enough to prepare for. So, before class I did the whole test in my notebook, using the course books, then went to class and copied my very in depth answers and got a C-.
First off his papers are graded like this is a upper division history class. He often says, "I will grade like an intro history class." Then when you get feedback on papers he picks apart the smallest formatting details. Then in his lectures he doesn't use visuals well at all. Get ready to go to class and listen to him ramble for the full 50.
Very very tough grader and lectures are pretty confusing as to what is important and what to write down. He is a very nice guy and a very entertaining professor, but that wont help your grade any.
Grades really tough especially with essays and tests. That being said the quizzes are relatively easy. The most important thing is to at least read spark notes and always remember to bring your clicker to class. He has usually 3 clicker questions per day that tanked my grade hard.
Harsh grader. I got A's on both of my papers but people around me were receiving C's and D's for work that honestly should have earned at least a B in a 1000 level course. Online discussions were ridiculous and I never earned higher than an 80 despite fulfilling the criteria of what was expected in our submissions. Others liked him, to be fair.
He seems like a nice person, and is interesting to listen to, but has some definite flaws. It was very hard to tell what was important information to copy down, making the quizzes harder than they should have been. He was also a very hard grader on essays, and often on criteria that hadn't been put forward.
Great professor that really cares about the material. He makes the class laugh and portrays the information well. He is sometimes cocky and seems short with his students, but show up and study a few hours you'll be fine. But does seem a lot for an entry level course. He should be teaching more upper level courses.
As a senior this is the worst class I have taken at CU. Unreasonable grading, unreasonable grading. And an unfriendly unhelpful professor. DO NOT TAKE.
A great lecturer, but really prides himself on not giving out A's. Gives great feedback on your papers, but is impossible to improve. Frustrating when other friends are in a different HIST 3020 and are getting A's.... Smart man though.
Fair grader or papers. If you write clearly and actually read the book he gives pretty decent feedback. Easy class to get an A in if you do the work.
Really interesting lectures and is good at keeping you engaged in the material. Although he is a pretty tough grader. The class is basically just papers so if you're not a good test taker and like to write, he's probably a good fit for you.
Has absurdly high expectations of students and piles on far too much work to keep up with. I have never received below a B on an essay and he gave me an F on my second essay after I followed the directions that he gave me off of my first essay. This class is way too difficult for what it is.
A terrible, horrible Professor. Very passive aggressive with students and a tough grader. Gave me a 55 on my first paper, did not put comments as to why, and then when i went to office hours to discuss, simply put the blame on his TA. Studied hard and make a 92 on his final, and the guy gave me a 79.9 in the course. Dont take this dudes class.
Dr. Paradis was one of my favorite professors I've had so far. He did a really great job keeping lectures interesting, and really made you think about the content he was teaching.
Great guy and very intelligent, but horrible class. Would never recommend taking, his expectations are way too high for an intro level course and while this class was interesting... it was more stressful than anything else. If you are ready to work exceptionally hard it is possible to achieve an A, but be ready to WORK.
Do not take a class by him. Grades way too hard and is passive aggressive. I worked extremely hard and he gave me below average grades on everything I turned in.
No matter how hard you try it will never be enough. He is passive aggressive with his limited commentary on your papers and discussion posts. I took all of his comments into consideration from the first paper when I wrote my second and somehow did worse. He told me I ignored his comments when I sat there writing with them next to me. AVOID!
I took HIST1010 online, I did not have wifi while I was abroad so I emailed David to tell him and he was very kind and understanding about it. This was my last course before I got my diploma and David was super helpful and responsive to emails. He made sure my final grade would be posted in time for graduation. Hes the best, I highly recommend him
Very knowledgeable and charismatic. No written homework for 95% of the class, mostly just reading. Lots and lots of reading. Can be passive aggressive on comments in your papers, and apparently no paper is ever perfect, so you gotta sift through his comments to improve. A few papers and a 15 minute screencast. Procrastination is your worst enemy.
Teachers like this are the reason so many people stop trusting academics. Thankfully the internet makes guys like this irrelevant.
Great prof. One of my favorites. He was always really helpful when confusion or difficulty arose. He was also great in lectures, very engaging.
Contrary to what some people have said here, the feedback Dr. Paradis gives on papers is some of the best writing feedback I've ever gotten. His comments were detailed, specific, and extremely helpful. He's a really good lecturer, which is important, because the history course I took for him was very lecture heavy. Really good professor!
A bit arrogant (no offense). Course is an introductory but he grades as if students are graduates. Comes off condescending and passive aggressive in feedback which feels unnecessary.
Lectures are very dense and fast, but they're all recorded so you can go back if you missed something. TONS of reading, which you can't succeed without (especially on the final). Papers are somewhat tough but aren't graded harshly. Overall super great class!
This class is difficult if you are not willing to put in a lot of time for this class. LOTS of reading and 3 papers in total. There are clicker questions for an attendance grade. If you go to class and do the readings you will get a decent grade. Prof is very funny and the lectures are engaging. Something to keep in mind is lots of homework.
Ancient history was so broad and really difficult to follow. The assignments were all essays, and very heavy, difficult readings. The final exam was honestly terrible. worst exam I have every taken. You have to memorize all the readings assigned and be able to apply what you learned. Professor seemed like a good guy, but it was the worst class tbh.
This course was my favorite this semester. Prof. Paradis is truly one of the best instructors at CU. The reacting game was one of my favorite things I have ever done in a class, and I would highly recommend this course to any history nerds. There were only 3 papers the entire semester and 2 of them were 500 words max. Great course, great professor
I enjoyed his class, but he's definitely not for everyone. The course was very lecture-heavy, with a lot of readings. His lectures are insightful and entertaining, and the readings are interesting. Most of the course is somewhat easy (short papers and quizzes), but the amount of information he expects you to know for the final is over the top.
Professor Paradis is very personable and delivers funny lectures. Clickers are used so engagement is necessary. There is so much reading in the course: 5 books and 20 other primary source readings over the semester. The essays were hard, but I am also not a creative/primary source thinker. He knows his history, but his intro class is over the top.
He is a good proffesor. He takes iClicker a for participation credit. He is very caring and honestly his class is easier than a lot of other classes. The quizzes are easy, and as long as you go to office hours for the essays which are the main part of your grade, you will pass. As long as you show up and apply yourself it is an easy A or B.
He gives a good lecture and clearly knows his stuff. However, he expects way too much for intro class students, he makes points so high that a mediocre essay can kill your grade. The final is a nightmare of memorization at random to identify 10 of 30 random primary sources. Harsh grading and too many clicker questions with a high stress class.
I liked the course and what was taught but the professor can come across rude when talking to him about the course as well as your grades and is not very considerant.
David is very enthusiastic about history but this class is WAY beyond the level of what an intro class should be. There are 4 books and about 20 other readings that you need to memorize for the final which is honestly horrible. He posts his slides and give lots of chances for extra credit which is great. If you don't LOVE history, don't take it.
Dr. Paradis is the best. He's very passionate about medieval history. This course was centered around a giant research project, and all of our work was project-based and built towards the final paper. It was almost all independent research. Definitely take the class if you're into that sort of thing, but be aware that it's a huge time commitment.
This teacher made the class very hard by only rambling and not having a recitation. He would also not do very interactive activities and this class was very hard since so many people were there and it was distracting.
I really enjoyed having Paradis as a professor. This class is the second one I've taken with him with and both semesters he was a super chill guy. Can be a little harsh with his paper feedback, but he doesn't grade too harshly and understands if you need more time to work on assignments. Really recommend Paradis if you have the chance!!
I love Professor Paradis. He is a very kind and caring person and is super understanding if you cant come to class or need an extension on an assignment. That being said, he is a pretty harsh grader and his lectures are not super exciting. If you like English/Medieval history, take class with him but do not take class with him for an elective.
He's a legend.
This guy knows a lot about what he's teaching and he's really funny, very kind and empathetic with his teaching of history and knows all the slides off the top of his head. You can tell he wants to be there and loves history.
He seemed like a nice guy, very passionate about history. But, if you are not a history person and are just taking to class for a gen ed, take something else. He is a very harsh grader, essays are worth a lot of points. The final was ridiculous and way harder than necessary. Definitely would recommend avoiding if you aren't a history buff.
Really sweet guy who really cares about history, but as a gen ed, this class is not great. His lecture style is mostly rambling and it's honestly pretty hard to take notes in this class. Slides have minimal info and all he really does is contextualize. Final is ridiculously hard. Essays and iclicker are worth hundreds of points.
Professor Paradis is genuinely passionate about his work. I loved the class, and he gave very insightful comments when grading. However, for HIST1011, please be aware that it's more like an upper-level class, so if you were looking for an easy A, this class isn't for you.
Dr. Paradis is a very nice guy, but if you are looking for this class to be a gen ed credit, I would look for a different class. While there is a lot of extra credit offered, there are a lot of readings, all of which are important for the final and the quizzes and papers are difficult if you don't study.
A genuinely nice guy with a real passion for history.
Really great professor, you can get a lot of points just by showing up and doing the clickers, he has really entertaining lectures and it's a relatively easy and straightforward class overall.
Very enthusiastic about teaching the class and the subject as well as open to answering questions in class. The final just a way to see if you memorized the readings from the class.
His TA messed up when grading the biggest paper assignment of the class and he did nothing to help rectify her mistake. The TA justified giving me a 39% on the essay due to “there being zero citations”. My essay had 5 different citations from the assigned reading. I showed the professor how she clearly made a mistake and he did nothing to help.
Really passionate about the subject and also a really friendly guy. This class is tough, so attending lecture (especially for clickers) and reading is a MUST. All the readings are really important to the papers, quizzes, and the final. If you're not a history major like me, you should pick another Gen-Ed, but overall great professor and great class
I enjoyed having him as a professor. The workload was pretty light except for some readings but besides that it was good. There were 3 essays in total and no final which was nice. Overall he was good but I would recommend him for people who are majoring in History or have an interest in it.
