This is such an easy class. He is so so nice- but teaches straight from the powerpoint provided by the book, so class can be sort of boring. He's SO nice and likes his students. Tests/Quizzes are EASY!
I had such a hard time in this class...he seems nice, but I had to do a lot of studing to keep up
it is an easy class. is boring he does teach from power point. gave take home quizs and open book test. easy B
Good teacher. Easy class.
I looove David L. Parker!! What a great guy!! Easy class, you'll love it!!!!
THIS MAN is a wonder of society. I am truly amazed thate people such as him can exist in todays world. DLP,....if you're reading out there, I love you. You are great and you have made my buslaw experience STUPENDOUS!
Parker is the man! I actually learned a lot and got a good grade. He has open book exams, take home exams, take home quizzes, all the stuff you could ask for. AWESOME teacher, you will wish you had him if you dont already.
Great teacher, very bright, and very chill. An easy A.
he's very helpful & wants you to learn. tests are tough but theyre open note or take home usually... take him for 218!
I love David Parker. He is hot.
Very long class but if u take 218 this is the only professor u would want. Open book for everything. (shytown)
awesome teacher. all open book tests, some take home. all take home quizzes. questions r a little difficult but no reason not to get at least a b+ in his class!
Mr. Parker is SOOOOO hot! I love his accent, and his way of making me want to come to class!
I love this man!! He is sooo awesome and everything he assigns is open-book, open-notes, including the exams. Fun and his class is very interesting, not to mention, he is hot! Just a cool teacher all around!!
really nice guy, all tests and quizzes open book, with occasional take home. makes class fun and interesting, easy A.
the guy is great. take him bottom line.
OMG THIS CLASS IS EASY. everything is take home or open book. Have to sit through painfully slow 2 hour night class while he just reads through the powerpoint slides. Tries to start discussions..some interesting stories..esp about criminal law. RIDICULOUSLY EASY!! TAKE HIM!!!
this class IS an easy B. The only problem is that his grading is BS. He grades correct answers wrong, and is a JERK about fixing them (i.e. WONT DO IT). Dont expect to reason with him, it wont get through. Easy class, but Parker is a jerk, contradicts himself at times... not admitting it of course
This guy is a total jerk. Everything might be open book, open notes, but he really has no people skills. If you ask him a question he gets really annoyed and thinks everyone should understand everything when he's really very unclear.
This class is an EASY A-, put a little effort in and you will get an A. Class is open book, open note, every quiz was take home. He's def the easiest of all the 218 teachers and you will regret not taking him if you dont. Also very nice guy.
Hes a lawyer who teaches on the side, so this class is not his main priority, which is why you will only be in class for maybe 30 min each period. Gets straight to the point, gives you everything you need for tests in class. Tests are essay based, but VERY easy (as they are open note, and he gives you everything). Just go to class, easy A.
Okay, seriously, his tests are OBSCURE (not easy -- don't know where people get that from). Even though the tests may be OPEN note, they are still OBSCURE and difficult to completely answer what he asks of you correctly. Take Daphne Thomas or Ron Cereola. The only incidence where you should take Parker is if your only other choice is Usry.
Tests are hard, much harder than last semester. Parker is kind of hard to understand at times. Class never cancelled, but it's a 3 hour class and we never went for more than an hour and a half each week. I would take it again...it's an easy B
tough class but great professor. he understands that his tests are impossible (despite using open notes) and curves some of them! very understanding about missing class, etc.
The class is relatively easy, and very interesting. Tests aren't as bad as others claim, especially if you take good notes. Only problem is that you only receive 3 grades all semester (from the tests), so if you aren't a test person, maybe take someone else.
alright, here's the deal with 218 and Parker. If you need a class that involves no work but can afford to get a low B/ high C in, then Parker is your guy. Only has 3 Tests and they are not easy, actually there is always 2 correct answers and you never know what you got wrong. If you have time to take someone else that requires more work, then takem
If Hanson is still replacing Parker's 218 class, take him. 1000 total pts, 250 for 3 open note tests (one of which is the final) and 250 pts for showing up to his once a week class. Also, gave a 100 point extra credit thing that takes no more then 1 hour. I finished the class with 986 points out of 1000, and didn't open the text before the final
all tests were open note but they were still pretty challenging. i walked out of the class with a B. i couldn't imagine taking his tests without notes so i would reccommend him since he lets everyone use them. grade consisted of 3 tests.
Parker is my boy. Straight up. He stayed and talked to me for almost an hour when I had questions about going to court. Tests were all either open note or open book, but don't get the wrong impression, they're still very hard. I'd say if you're not a test-taker, consider someone else.
He really knows his stuff! Parker is always answers questions well and promotes class participation. His tests were all open-note, but not open book. So you have to, at least, print out the powerpoints. Easy class & I learned a lot!
Parker is the man! He is a local attorney and brings so many interesting stories that keeps class interesting. I took the 2:50 minute class on Thursday, but it was worth it! Tests are open notes and not that bad as long as you pay attention. Attendance is mandatory, but often times he doesn't keep you past 1:45 mins... TAKE HIM!!!
Business Law with Parker is quite interesting, he is a lawyer himself and sometimes cancel class because he's busy working in the court. The grade consist of 3 tests, with the 3rd one being 40%. First two were a breeze, the last one was a bit hard, but manageable. All open note, so no excuse for getting less than a B. Highly recommended.
Parker's class was pretty easy. Just take some notes while he talks each class and you'll do fine come the test b/c they are open note. His test are still kind of hard even though their open note but if you stay a little after class for his review he tells you exactly what is on the test. Easier than some of the other profs out there. Cool guy too!
GREAT teacher. I highly recommend taking his class- he gives you open note tests as long as the class participates in discussion (he's pretty lenient on that too). He also tells you specifically what to study prior, so you can go back through your notes and highlight. He was helpful when I had questions too. Take his class!
best professor you could take for business law and very willing to help. nice to look at in class, too, so you'll want to go.
This class is graded on 3 tests. He trys to make it intimidating but the tests are all open power point and open note. I barely opened my text book and you never need to see him for help. Its a easy B and if you really study or know your stuff you will get an A
Interesting Class, good professor, take him if you can
DO NOT LISTEN TO THESE OTHER RATINGS. Please I am trying to help you. His class is different. He used to teach only the 2.5 hr section. But now that he switched he's way harder. He is not an intelligent person and tests you on pointless details. You will get questions right on the test, he'll admit it's right, but he wont give pts. Do not take him!
All of these comments are based on his previous semesters of teaching the two and a half hour night class. He has changed his class drastically. I took the previous advice only to find out that it is completely inaccurate. You are allowed a notecard per chapter on tests, but the tests are picky and extremely difficult. Not an easy A/B
It's not as easy as I thought it was going to be. The classes are pretty boring, and even though you can use notecards on the tests, they are still difficult. Tests are the only grades in the class. I thought it was going to be an easy A with Parker, but right now I have a B-.
Easy class. i got a B+ in the class without really trying. I dont know what the other posts are talking about David is the man. fun teacher who grades easy.
GREAT TEACHER! take him if you get the option. pretty easy tests if you just study from the notes. easy grader and overall easy class. easy A
Awesome teacher, Parker is the man. I have an A in the class right now and all i do is study the notes and powerpoints. The test questions are right off of them. Also gives a lot of easy extra credit which boosts your grade.
I have a B+ in the class right now and I got a C on the first test. He gives so much extra credit that really ups your grade. Tests I found out are directly from the powerpoint, so study that and you can get an easy A.
Parker is the man!! He is very helpful in office hours and the tests are relatively easy, gives you a full page of notes on the tests and a lot of extra credit is offered. Take Parker if you get the opportunity, definitely the best 218 teacher out there
Professor Parker is an excellent teacher, his in class examples make tests seem like a breeze. Tests are straight from the notes in class and the powerpoints. Take Parker!!
UMmm his tests are not as easy as other people say, I read and make huge notecards and still failed his tests. He talks sooooo much and you are not sure what is important cause he just reads off of the slides that he provides
He is very helpful if you go to office hours. Attendance is mandatory and make sure you don't forget your clicker. i recommend reading the chapter and making and outline before class and then adding to the outline in class. Tests are hard, but open book. As long as you understand the concepts and are able to real life apply them you should do w
He has changed his teaching style from the past. His tests are a ****, they have material thats not covered in the book or in class. He also is not very helpful during office hours, he usually just seems annoyed that students come and bother him during them. Its a ton of reading and the material is super dry. Lots 'o work
Classes and lectures are extremely boring. Tests are online, which may make you think they are easy but they aren't. Tests are 50 questions and he only gives you 50 minutes to take it. Questions are a paragraph long so the amount of time you have to answer the question after you read it is NONE! difficult class. Can manage a C if you read the book
Be careful. Tests are online, but impossible. 50 questions, 50 minutes, and you need way more time to do a good job. His classes are boring. He does want you to succeed, but he makes the test way to hard to do so.
DO NOT TAKE HIM. He is extremely rude, boring, arrogant, and unnecessarily hard. He is always late for office hours and doesn't care about his students. He is a practicing attorney and it seems that his teaching comes second and he could care less about what his students have to say.You could study for days for the test and never get an A.
Just because he thinks that he is a lawyer, he treats everyone in the class like we are law students in law school. He expects you to know everything from the readings for the next day of class. He reads the definitions from the book and doesn't explain anything. His tests are hard and people always run out of time. DO NOT TAKE HIM.
This class was soooo boring. He was an OK teacher. Could use notecards for the test but he makes them 50 questions in 50 minutes. Also if you miss more than one class he lowers your grade.
His tests are hard, but he gives you a lot of extra credit. He also let our class out about 20 minutes early each day and he lets you use notecards on the test.
Do not take. Much better teachers to take. His tests are impossible, time is not a factor but gives those A or B, B or C, C or D answers alot and they are hard. Quizzes are worth a ton, read the cases before and have them open when the quiz comes up. Must curve grade a lot, got a B- but F,D,C and B on tests.
Parker is such a good teacher. This is not an easy class though. If you do your work then you will get an A like I did. If you want a slack class with no work I would avoid COB 218 entirely its BLAW....not art...
The course material is hard alone and requires alot of reading. His tests are just as complicated and they can be kind of confusing but they are based mostly off of his power points and definitions from the book. I would not recommend him unless you have no other choice.
The powerpoints seem very straight forward and Mr. arer clearly knows his stuff. He gives opportunities for extra credit which is good. However exams are confusing even with note cards. 50 minutes for 50 questions that are all a paragraph long. There are also many typos in these questions leading to further confusion. Helpful during office hours.
Dave Parker is awesome. Tests are challenging, but it is a challenging class. He tells you this at the beginning of the semester. He offers a lot of extra credit too. He also lets you use one notecard per chapter for each test. If you put a normal amount of effort in this class, a B is very manageable, possibly an A.
Parker is a knowledgeable professor, and he has a lot of experience in the legal field. 218 is not an easy class. As a law class sometimes there is not a completely right or wrong answer, but he does his best to explain complex concepts. Tests are difficult, even when he allows a notecard per chapter. Some extra credit. I'd take him again.
The Michael Angelo of Law
Professor Parker is a nice professor but his class structure is not so good. 4 Tests worth 15% each that are ridiculously hard. He gives quizzes that are easy if you read the book and help your grade a lot. Most annoying thing is that he takes 4 weeks to grade tests. 20 questions mc on blackboard with 5 open responses. Should be graded in 3 days.
He knows all you can about law. You feel like you know the information until you take the test that are way harder than they need to be. All in all it's not a bad class.
Terrible Teacher. Do not take him! All tests are online on connect and are all application questions. He gives you practice questions online which are nothing like his test questions. Other teachers are much easier avoid him at all costs!
Parker is truly a nice guy. His class consists of 5 tests and a final, with a sprinkling of extra credit thrown in. Go to his office hours - he is an extremely helpful professor to talk to one-on-one. This class mostly consists of reading the textbook and answering questions which apply a working knowledge of what you read.
AVOID!!!! I don't know why his rating is so high!! He doesn't teach well at all. Yeah he has a lot of experience and knows what he is talking about but he doesn't teach! You will have to learn everything on your own- if I skipped class and read during that time Id know more than if I went to class, but attendance is MANDATORY!
I think professor Parker is pretty cool. He definitely expects you to read before class and he just uses the power points given from the textbook but he gives great examples. This class is more or less just memorization so as long as you read the book you should be fine. Tests were hard because of the hypotheticals but he allowed notecards.
On the surface Parker sounds like a great professor (gives extra credit and allows notecards for tests). But the tests are impossibly hard and cover a ridiculous amount of material. He DOES NOT curve at all, even when averages are in the C/D range. He's a poor teacher and assumes the content is easy when it is not.
Dr. Parker's class is tough. You get to use notecards during the 5 tests and Final, but it's hard to memorize the entire textbook. His lectures are useless as he pulls the tests from the textbook company. When a professor doesn't make his own test, you know its a bad class. Avoid if you can or face utter memorization of 24 chapters.
Professor Parker was easily my favorite professor at JMU. He's a funny guy and I think he genuinely cares about all of his students. I took his class originally and got a D+ to give you some perspective too (repeat forgive B+). He's a great teacher. The reason I got the D+ was all me. Read the textbook and listen to his lectures and you'll be great
Good luck! This class shouldn't be hard but he makes it one of the harder lower level COB classes. Tests are near impossible and cover so much material it is impossible to be prepared. Average test grade is a CD even though he allows you to use notecards or even do the tests at home. Doesn't do a good job explaining content.
Only way you will PASS this class is if you read every page of every chapter multiple times. He doesn't make his own tests and his lectures don't help when it comes to tests. There are plenty of other 218 professors that are much easier. And my class didn't have note cards so... yeah he is even worse now
Excellent professor ) Must work hard and follow his suggestions for a complete understanding of the material. Has a great deal of experience and knowledge. Students that do not do well in his class haven't spent the time the material requires. Laziness is not an option in this class- nor should it be in any class.
Unless you want to sit in the library forever re-reading tons of chapters for exams to just get a DC then do not take this class with Parker. His exams are ridiculously specific and impossible to score well on no matter how much you study. Doesn't curve no matter how much everyone complains. Tests made my textbook company and are online in class
PLEASE listen to me. Good teacher. But he does not write his tests, and they are online, taken in class. 40 questions, 5 multiple choice options. It's unreal how specific they are. Literally have to memorize the chapters. First C I've ever gotten. Id study 2 weeks for his tests and would get a B- if I was lucky. 12 of class failed. Lots of WORK!!
Parker is the worst 218 professor to take. He doesn't make his own tests and they are incredibly difficult... definitely not in line with what he teaches in class. Take anyone else!
Professor Parker is a great guy, he is passionate about what he does. He really cares about his students and wants them to learn. The class is very tough! You only have 5 tests and a final all online, but taken in class. you need to know the material inside and out. I love the topic so I was interested in the class. Its a lot of work!
Professor Parker is the man to say the least. He gives out 5 tests and those are your only grades but he gives out around 4 whole percentage points of extra credit so if you had a 76 at the end it would jump up to an 80. The tests are hard and specific but not impossible if you study. Guys seem to like his class more than girls. I also learned alot
Parker is not like other Blaw professors. He knows Law well, owning his own firm, and he's fairly nice, but it appears he does not want you to learn, only regurgitate info, which is not real learning. If you have hours to read, don't mind sleeping, eating, breathing and knowing EVERY word by heart from the book, take him.
First professor that has a complete understanding of what he/she is teaching about.. He owns his own law firm/has practiced for years. He is willing to help you but if you are not following his instruction on how to learn the material and go to see him whining about how hard the tests are... don't bother. ReadingGood Grade!! Bad RateBad Student!!
Only gives 5 tests, no homework, no quizzes, no projects. To succeed in this class you must have the entire text book memorized word for word. Do not take unless you want to spend hours on hours memorizing every word of the text book and are a excellent test taker. My class didn't get any extra credit either.
Business law is not my cup of tea and Parker just made it worse. Came out with a B- in the class but barely 5 tests and a cumulative final. He is unhelpful in telling you how to study however does allow notecards on his tests. He is challenging and you are going to have to work your ass off to get a decent grade. Average class grade on test was C
This class is horrible , all Parker does is read right off the slides which come straight from the chapter. Dont get me wrong he knows his stuff, but this entire class has nothing to do with him teaching. Plus unless you can memorize the entire chapter then no way you will do well on the tests.
This is a very difficult class in general and Parker is a pretty good teacher. He explains the material well if you read. His tests are difficult and you must read the textbook and have a good understanding of the material inside and out to pass. He allows note cards on tests and he does provide several extra credit quizzes throughout the year
He's not very helpful and he doesn't do a good job preparing you for his surprisingly difficult tests.
Very difficult tests. Only grades for the course are five tests and a final so you have to do well on the test. Knows his stuff but during lecture he pretty much just reads off of the powerpoint slides. If you don't know the entire textbook by heart, good luck on the tests.
His lectures are very broad and if you only study your lecture notes, you will fail the tests. You literally have to know every word in that textbook. His tests i got used to, and then he decided to totally change the format with no true/false and few scenarios. If you miss more than 3 classes you automatically fail the class.
It's a known fact, at least by my adviser, that professor Parker is a terrible option for COB 218. His tests are ridiculous, I put hours and hours into studying but nothing paid off. I went to office hours and said I was struggling in the class, he looked at my notes and offer little advice and sent me on my way after about 2 minutes. Dont take him
This class was terrible. You honestly don't even need him as a teacher since all he does is read from the PowerPoints. He doesn't even make his own tests (he uses test banks). You really do need to know the book word for word. The only grades in his class are exams and I would study for hours and still did awful. Avoid if you can.
Just finished the final exam today and our class average was a D+. The only way we got graded in this class was based off exams. And all our other exam averages ranged from 50s-70s. We got some extra credit opportunities, but it doesn't have very much of an impact on your grade. Good luck if you decide to take this class.
Took COB 291, 204, 202 this semester & got As. Do you have Parker? WITHDRAW. Only grades are 5 exams and a final. Last two exams had a class avg of 50% & 57%. No curves. Miss three classes and you instantly fail. Office hours are at 7am 3 times a week. For lectures he just reads slides that don't even scratch the surface of what you are tested on.
I took this class and loved it. If you go to class and doing the readings/assignments you'll be fine. Go to his office hours, too. He's a bit intimidating at first, but he's such a nice person once you start talking to him. He offers some extra credit as well. I highly suggest taking him. If you put in effort, you'll be fine.
Teach yourself class and tests are multiple choice which are made of mainly examples. 15% is online homework which two tries and it does help a lot(all the answers are on quizlet if you don't wanna do them) . He also gives extra credit out which can help a lot if you screw up on one test. If you do the homework and use flash cards its an easy B+.
Parker is a good teacher. You definitely need to read the textbook and do the online work. His lectures are good and he's a real lawyer so he knows what he's talking about. Gives 30 extra credit points throughout the semester.
Read the book word for word and outline the chapters with minimal notes in class and you'll do fine. His tests are online (in class) and very hard, so know the little things. He's very nice and easy to talk to but is VERRRY strict on grades and attendance. Dont try and push this guy around because it won't work.
I took 497 and let's put it this way, it's hard to walk out of this class without at least a B, he's far more relaxed on his seniors than the lower core kids. I've also heard the same of his 494 class. Not a bad choice for an elective fill in. 20% of our grade came from community service, just do 20 hours and go to the extra credit opportunities
Parker knows his stuff, as he is a practicing lawyer. He has some cool stories and explains things well in class. The tests are brutal though. Did all the work outside of class(which is a lot) and studied a pretty good amount and still wounded up with a 79.9 in the class which he wouldn't round up. Maybe I'm not a law guy, but this class isn't easy
While Parker is a nice guy and very approachable, he doesn't do a very good job preparing you for the tests. His lectures are disorganized and they tend to drag on. If it weren't for the mindtap quizzes, my grade would've tanked, considering my test average was a C+ average. It's important to keep in mind that cob218 is a tough class in general.
His materials were not related to his test. His final is cumulative final which include 16 chapters. In addition, he never gave us study guide or paper to prepare for the tests which makes the test so hard to us.
class is mandatory, but it shouldnt be as he puts everything online and his lectures arent that great. its an easy class but its just hella inconvenient when you have to go to a class you know you could be learning online
Parker is apparently a great professor, but I don't see it. His lectures are read straight off the book, he doesn't make his own tests, and the homework doesn't help. The tests are impossible to study for and never match up with his lectures. Class is impossible. Take someone else
Got our exam 1 grade back the morning of exam 2, to find you didn't get the grade you expected and have no time to look over it and see where you went wrong before the next exam. Long cases to read, up to 10 readings for each class. Exams are very unclear of what to expect for, 10 short answer case questions. In summary, just a lot of aggravation.
Definitely stay away from this class. He teaches the class like an upper level course for students in law school. There is an absurd amount of reading for a finance elective course. The first exam went badly for most people, probably because we had absolutely no idea what to expect. Got our exam 1 score back THE DAY we took our second exam.
got our test 1 grade back, the day of our 2nd test. this was a month later. we had a mock trial. he said if we do good on it we will have no final. were told we did great on it. the next class, we walk in, he says nothing about the trial. just to take good notes the next classes for the final. if ur wondering if this is a good elective, its not.
Tests are really hard, even though there are 5. Average on each of them was 65 -72. Last one was take home which was nice, B average. Attendance is mandatory, you will lose a whole letter grade if you skip more than 1. Have to teach yourself the material but its manageable. Do every single mindtap, and try not to bomb the tests
I went into this class thinking I was going to do poorly because I didn't do well on the first test. However, since tests were only 10%; the average grades I was getting on the tests did not bring my grade down as much. He cares about his students succeeding after college. He bumped my grade from a 89.5 (B+ for his class) to an A-. Go to his class.
Parker is a great choice for COB318. Classes are interesting and you learn a lot. Not an easy class and you have to really work hard to get an A or B. He doesn't round up final grades so be aware of that. I got a 79.9% in the end and he didn't round up even though I did the extra credit and met with him outside of class. But nice guy and good class
Solid choice for COB318, only things you're graded on are the tests and mind tap (he gives you at least a couple weeks to complete each). His lectures aren't the most exciting but lets face it the content doesn't help. He's a lawyer so he has some cool stories. If you just listen during his lectures, it's definitely easy to pass
Cool guy, not a good option for 318 though. I enjoyed his lectures for the most part but he makes the class more and tests more difficult than needed. Do yourself a favor and if you're looking for an easier professor tale McCarthy. 4 tests in Parkers class for 80% of your grade the other 20 is 10% homework's, every chapter has atleast 5, 10% paper.
Parker is quite honestly the laziest professor I've ever had at JMU. He doesn't make his own tests, PowerPoints, homeworks, ANYTHING. Honestly, all this man does is show up to class with premade lectures and that's it. His tests rarely matches the lectures. It's quite frankly disrespectful how low-effort he is in regards to this class.
His lectures were interesting especially because he has lots of stories as an attorney, but the tests are wayyy harder than need be and majority of your grade is determined by those tests.
Literally the laziest person ever. Steals all tests of quizlet and have to take them in the testing center. Most of it is stuff he's never mentioned in class and you're screwed even if you study for days on end. He's extremely condescending when you ask him questions and is late to every class. I've gone to his office hours and he wasn't there.
4 tests & mindtap hw is the only grades you have. He is a lawyer and tells us stories in his lectures. He reads from the slides & doesn't make our hw or tests, he uses the stuff from the textbook. This is good though bc you can just search up his class on quizlet and you will be set for the tests. Overall not a hard class if u use quizlet to study.
He has decent lectures which make you think he's a good professor but he doesn't create any of his materials. The tests are difficult because many of the questions do not come from the material we learn. It doesn't matter if you study hard to pay attention in lectures you will do mid on the tests because it's material you've never learned about.
WORST BLAW OPTION!!! Tests are so much harder then they should be and even if you study for days you are screwed and tests make up 90% of your grade. The test is mostly stuff he never talks about in class.
He was "mmmkay"
Completely mixed bag of a professor. The workload for this class is very small but tests make up literally 90% of your grade, and he doesn't give you any resources to study so you're on your own. The tests weren't crazy hard, but you need to go to every class. He's a practicing attorney so he's got some cool stories. He's just alright.
Pretty bad option for BLAW. Lectures are engaging and interesting and Parker is a funny guy but the tests are nasty. No study guides are given and lectures rarely cover much actual test material. Seems like he just gets the test from the department. Everyone I know who has a different professor seems to be doing better in the class.
