Effective, relevant, motivating, excellent!
You have to study hard to ace tests, but this guy is an excellent teacher.
The class is not hard, but I am less than impressed w/ Dr. P's lectures (straight from book) Seems a bit irked if you ask questions or offer info (like, "who's the professor here?") Most questions he just answers, "I don't know..good qu
Good teacher. His lectures are very enjoyable.
So boring
This guy is smart, intellegent and good. However he does not like questions, does not like to have students that knows as much as he does about subjects and can really be an donkey when he wants to be.
I'm a business major but I took his class because I am interested in history. Pros - lectures are interesting, knows very much about GA (especially Cartersville!). Cons - he is not clear on what to study for tests. Read the assigned readings and you will do fine on the quizzes!!
I loved this professor. After taking this class, I actually changed my major to history. Study his lecture notes for the tests and the book notes for the quizzes and you will have no problems aceing this class!
This is a 2000 level class, but I took it near the end of my studies at KSU. Before taking this class I was burn out and couldn't see myself doing history type work forever. After taking Dr. Parker I found my love of history again. He loves what he teaches and loves teaching. He will spend the time with you if needed to get your projects right.
Dr. Parker is an excellent teacher if you like Southern history. He knows what he is talking about but doesn't put off the "I'm smarter than you" attitude you get with a lot of PhDs. He won't give you a good grade for not work, but if you do a good job you can do very well.
He is such a nice professor! His test are easy if you take notes. He lectures by telling stories which make History not so boring!
Tells his lectures like a story so it is enjoyable and easy to understand. Great Teacher!
He makes the class very interesting. He drops the lowets test grade and grades fairly. If you go to class and take good notes, this should be a breeze. He was a great professor.
He is boaring, he stands up front and just leactures. Tests are hard even if you take notes.
I enjoyed Dr. Parker's lectures; he reminded me of the radio host Garrison Keillor from Prairie Home Companionin. His tests were pretty much straight from the lectures so make you pay attention in class. Keep up with the readings because he gets annoyed when students ask questions about something that can be answered by the text.
Gives a great lecture, providing you with interesting, obscure, funny anecdotes about US history, and ties together events to form a clear picture of US history. However, my one complaint was the lack of interaction. It's him talking and that's about it. You can ask questions, but he doesn't ask the class to provide any input.
Does not have class interaction. Gave easy quizzes everyday, but tests were extremely hard. Too much material for one test and wanted you to go into more depth and correlation than he did in class. He uses examples that are no way related to the course. He makes obsure comments about his life. I wouldn't take him if I were you! :(
Tests were mostly essay...and they were extremely hard...he picks the most obscure parts of the chapters and makes questions about that...I would avoid taking this teacher unless you like topical history more than memorizing events...
Tests do not reflect what you learned. Covers 6 chapters on one testsometimes , then tests with 10 obscure questions. No way possible to display what you learned. I wouldn't recommend him unless you are a history buff and know it already.
There is a lot of work in this class, but it's worth it. Dr. Parker does a great job at getting his students to look closely at how history is studied and written. I recommend you take this class with him. He's a good fella too.
I love this teacher!! He is very nice and funny. Sometimes class is boring, but he is so funny that it doesn't matter. You MUST study for test and you MUST read the assigned material.
Great instructor for a class I had little to no interest in prior. Dr. Parker is passionate about what he teaches. In order to do well READ the required materials, SHOW UP, PAY ATTENTION, TAKE notes and you'll do fine. I would definitely take Dr. Parker again since he put a great spin on Georgian History.
Do not bother taking this professor. He picks favorites and grades accordingly. If you're one of his "faves" then you'll get a good grade - no matter how terrible your knowledge of history is. If you're not one of his favorites, he will tear you apart. He is the least knowledgeable of all the History professors and gets all his info from the text.
Shame on anyone who speaks poorly of Dr. Parker! He is one of the most influential teachers I, and several others, have ever taken. He knows what he is talking about and then some. He will not spoon feed you, but will help anyway he can. He loves essays, reviews, and good punctuation and if you can't provide him that then don't take his class.
Dr. Parker is great. And he did NOT hit that student. The student was being a jerk, he was all like "No i didn't do the reading and so what?" Nobody liked the student anyway. So Dr. Parker walked to the student's desk, the student stood up, they stared at each other and then the student sat down. No touching. Dr. Parker RULZ!!
Does not require any reading. Writing assignments are optional--do a few for kicks, but don't sweat it. He'll say on the 2nd or 3rd week of class that attendance is cool as long as you're there half the time. The strict policy on the syllabus is to weed out the total slackers. I don't know of anyone who made an A, but he hands out Bs like candy.
Read the text, show up to class and take notes.
Great prof. Show up to class, take notes, participate, and you should do well. He's really helpful and it was a pleasure being in his class.
Surprise! okay...that was an inside joke for all the students in Dr. Parker's Hist 2270 Summer '09 class. I really learned a lot in this class. I highly recommend Dr. Parker. There is a great deal of reading and writing, but if you stay on top of it you will be fine. Also, it would be a good idea to brush up on grammar & punctuation. : )
I took Dr. Parker for HIST 2270 and have now had him for my senior seminar, and he has been more than helpful every step of the way. Articles and topics in both classes were interesting, thought-provoking, and pertinent. Really an influential professor, one of the best as KSU.
Dr. Parker is awesome! He is so funny and really knows his stuff. He is always available to answer questions. Grades very fairly, especially on papers. Make sure you do the readings because there is usually 1 quiz(sometimes 2) a week. Take him if you have the chance, his stories and jokes will have you cracking up the entire semester!!
AWESOME! He learns everyone's names. He gave four book reviews, which were easy. I didn't even read the books. His tests are easy, mostly short answer and an essay. Super easy tests. He loves for you to visit him in his office.take him!
Dr. Parker is a delightful teacher. When you do your article reviews make sure that you read a few academic book reviews first. It will give you an idea of how he wants them to be written. Analyze the footnotes, see if anything is taken out of context, look at it from a different angle. GOOD LUCK!
Absolutely no extra credit or ability to make up unannounced quizzes that were missed for valid and VERIFIABLE reasons. Knowledgeable but boring and inflexible.I try not to be critical but I deserved an A in this class but got a B. I would not take this professor again even if it meant waiting to take a class I needed.
Fascinating and funny, but know that he expects you to come to class and do the reading. Not the class to take if you just want to do the bare minimum and skate by. His lectures are interesting and funny and the material is presented in a unique and thoughtful manner. Awesome class!!!
I know how much people love Dr. Parker, however, I will echo some of his naysayers. I took Dr. Parker's class, and it's one of the worst experiences I've ever had in school. He can be rude and he most certainly picks favorites, namely females. Do not question grades because he holds grudges and will grade based on them. Not a fan.
Avoid him in classes and as an advisor as well. He is not willing to help you and seems more dedicated to selling classes than making sure your on the right track.
Interesting, but he spends too much time talking about opera. And in Georgia History!! I mean, Eugene Talmadge as Papageno? I got it, but the rest of the students were lost.
The opera stuff-- I know!! He gave extra credit for going to opera shows. There's a lot of that stuff in Atlanta but it costs a lot and really who wants to go to the opera? So most of us just said we went and made up something about the opera we said we went to :)
he lectures everyday, won't end class early, even if its only 30 seconds (not joking). his exams are pretty difficult as well as quizes. its short answer and essay. readings for classes everyday. 3 papers over books we had to read, not too bad because they help your grade. exams are difficult. not a bad class, but be prepared to work for it
His class was okay, but I would not take his class again. His lectures are very dull. He is a nice guy, but his class was boring at times. This is not one of those easy A classes, you have really work for your grade.
Great Professor! Very smart, there is a lot of reading. If you do the reading you will get an easy A or B. I plan on taking Dr. Parker as many times as possible!
Make sure you read all assignments assigned or you will do poorly on the daily quiz. The Tests are mostly essay and in order to pass them you have to know everything. He will not tell you what will be on any test. He grades really hard on written assignments so make sure you follow his directions very carefully. He is very knowledgeable!
Dr. Parker is knowledgeable but his methods of presentation are ineffective. He gives an inordinate amount of pop quizzes that focus on minutiae; I was always taught to look at the big picture rather than the little details. Tests follow the same pattern. Does not explain assignments clearly at all, and grades essays inconsistently. Don't take him.
Good professor. He expects you to read a lot and his tests are hard, but he has a good sense of humor and is very knowledgeable. You have weekly quizzes and short papers, and you will cover a lot of material. If you want an easy A, look elsewhere, but if you want to learn something, take him.
The class was much more difficult than I expected, but Dr. Parker knows what he's talking about and you will learn about Georgia history from the inside out if you take him. Be prepared for many pop quizzes - and his expectations can be fuzzy at times.
Great prof, his quizzes and tests can be hard as he does focus on small details. However if you do well on his writing assignments you will do well in the class. I didn't do well on the tests or the quizzes but I always made A's on the writing assignments.
Attendance isn't mandatory, but pop quizzes cause it to be. Harsh grader when it comes to papers. Textbooks are a must!
Dr. Parker is awesome. He's funny and insightful and I did not mind waking up for his 8am class at all. A fair amount of reading and writing but nothing too overwhelming. Put in some effort and you'll make a good grade, and probably enjoy yourself too.
HORRIBLE professor. I do not know what everyone else is talking about-- do NOT take him. Grades WAY too hard and expects LITTLE details for pop quizzes, exams, papers, everything. Completely unnecessary and WAY too many assigned readings! I am typically an A student who works for my grades. If you take him, don't say I didn't warn you.
Great Professor. His class is not easy, but he is great if you actually want to learn something. His tests are hard, but his papers are easy if you can write at a college level.
Parker is not the professor you need to choose if you want an easy A. He will make you work for your grade. However, if you come to class prepared and submit assignments on time (never late), then you will do just fine in his class. Tests are graded extremely thoroughly, so make sure you write a lot and cover the entire question.
Dr. Parker is one of the most respectful professors at KSU he treats all his students with respect and expects the same from you during his lectures which are interesting and definitely tied to the exams. Be prepared to read and follow along with his lectures. His tests are fill in the blank and essayno multiply choice eek you have to study
Dr. Parker is is a great professor and he is very easy, if you study and read. Don't go to college and don't expect to read, however if you read the chapters and you take notes during class (which you need to do in college) you will do great. Go to his office and he will give you help if you need it. Lots of extra credit opportunities!
Dr. Parker can be longwinded and has a tendency to get off on tangents that have very little to do with the subject of the course. That being said, Dr. Parker's class should be easy for most people because of the test format (no essays, just some short answers w/ multiple choice). Read the book and you'll be fine, the lectures are tough.
I absolutely loved Professor Parker! He actually made US History MAKE SENSE! All of his lectures were very informative, easy to follow, and entertaining as well. But be warned - you do need to read and actually study to do well! I can't wait to take him again as a History Minor for HIST 3331 History of Religion in U.S.
Dr. Parker is an amazing professor. I was dreading Georgia History but he made it so incredibly interesting. He does assign papers and you do have to read and his tests are in a blue book, but don't be afraid of that! He curves grades and he will work with you. Take him! You will not regret it!
If you don't have anything to do but study like everyone else who rated him, by all means take his class. If you have a life, he will make it hell. Sit through his pointless lecture and read countless hours through the textbook only to find out the test and quizzes have nothing to do with what you learned in and outside of class.
Don't get happy when you find out he will drop a test grade b/c that's an incentive to not drop his class. His lectures are boring, his tests barely make sense to what we learned, his essay questions are fine until you get the grade back and realize you weren't "specific enough", and hey, be prepared for tests and pop quizzes all in the same week.
Unless you are a HIST major I would highly recommend that you don't take Parker. He expects way too much considering this is a gen-ed class. If you're a visual learner I would find a different professor because he never uses power points for any material pertaining to the exams. Also be prepared for multiple pop quizzes and an exam in the same week
Unless you're a history fanatic do. not. take. his. class. After you finally finish the 4 hours it takes to read a chapter in the online textbook be prepared for a quiz over the most minute details. The test includes maybe half of what you learn in the class. This class just isn't worth the amount of time required. There must be a better professor.
If you're not a history major, find a different teacher. He is not consistent with anything in his class. You never know if you need to know a minor detail or if you should just stay on the surface. Be prepared for tests and quizzes back to back. There will be weeks where you have tests and quizzes in every class so don't expect easy days.
Dr. Parker jumped all over the place and was very unclear about a ton of things. He always went off topic, and gave quizzes nearly every class. Couldn't keep the class into it so sleepy students would be a regular thing to see.
Parker is a sweet man and drops a lot of grades, however, he is not clear as to what he wants you to learn. You will be required to read 2 hours worth of a chapter almost every week and WILL be quizzed on it. He claims that if you read the text, that the quizzes will be easy. This is NOT TRUE. He claims we "don't know how to read properly"
He gives random pop quizzes that he assures you will be easy if you have read the material. Not true. I have an A in every class this semester accept his. He also doesn't post grades at all. Take someone else!
The test were multiple choice and essay. If you forgot one thing on the essays he would pretty much give you half credit. Wasn't clear on what he wanted you to tell him. For the final, he said to know the big things of what happened on the previous test. Didn't go over anything else. DO NOT TAKE HIM.
Mr. Parker is a tremendous teacher. Very caring and passionate about history. Grade consists of about 10 quizzes and 4 tests, of which he drops the 3 worst quizzes and the worst test which helps your grade significantly. His lectures can get boring at times but if you pay attention at least half the time the test will be easy. Highly recommend.
Great lectures! Funny & can tell loves subject. Made me want to minor in History. Class seems pretty straightforward but watch out for quizzes. Drops 3 lowest but there are 10 don't get behind in reading. Would take again
My difficulty rating reflects that we had a lot of papers on a series of books, so plan to do a lot of reading and writing. But if you put in the work it gets graded generously. In class, discussion and questions are encouraged, and the lectures subtly and effectively complement the books (though this often isn't apparent till you read the books).
If you like history this is an amazing class. Really knew what he was talking about and highlighted interesting things. A few papers, but the topics were fairly interesting. Lot of reading, two books had to be read(papers on the books), the rest is optional honestly. Tests weren't extremely hard imo, but they were written tests.
This class was honestly amazing. Yes there is a lot of reading and random pop quizzes, but he drops a numerous amount of quizzes and your lowest test grade. As long as you read, getting an A or B on every test and quiz is not difficult at all. Just, READ, READ, READ. There aren't any powerpoints, so you have to really listen to ho
Dr. Parker has a huge passion for History and he has a class that portrays that love. If you read the book, the class is an easy A. If you just listen to lectures and don't bother with the book, it's an easy B.
Lots of quizzes, but drops your lowest. Tests were fairly easy, but has free response questions that are 30% of the test. Funny and loves history so the class wasn't boring like usual history courses. Definitely need the textbook because his quizzes cover the chapters.
Dr. Parker is a phenomenal professor and is very knowledgeable on his subject matter. If you show up to all the classes and take the quizzes, it allows for an amount of extra credit. He takes a lecture-based approach and his tests are essay format. I would recommend him to anyone insteresed in history. Make sure you take excellent notes.
There are a handful of article reviews (the "articles" are 10+ pages long), two BIG papers including the final one. He grades his papers harshly. SIGNIFICANT time is required to write papers and article reviews. Be prepared to get your papers torn apart. Whatever you learned in English class, you're wrong. Turabian style is what you use.
Article reviews are tedious. tests are blue book so make sure you take good notes
You'll want to like him, I did; he's OK. Gives good lectures. Mired somewhat by the typical professorial diatribe.
Professor Parker was a really nice professor who knows his subject very well. He can get a little dry when he's talking so if you don't pay close attention in class it could hurt your grade.
Dr. Parker is truly one of the best professors at Kennesaw State. His passion for his subject is contagious, his wisdom astounding, and his caring and concern for the best for all is always evident. Take him!!
The kind of grader who takes points off for an extra space between a quotation and its intext citation. DO NOT BE LATE. The pop quizes are worth 15% of the final grade and must be in class when he hands it out, not late entries for nay reason.
I heard he changes up things each semester. Sometimes he uses a book, and sometimes he doesn't. Sometimes he has several article "reviews" and sometimes only one or two. The article reviews are serious and he grades super harsh for content and errors. You will be reading A LOT. Tests are over readings and what he says so come to class. POP QUIZZES!
Overall, Dr. Parker is very knowledgeable and respected. No textbook, but you have to read some entries in the New Georgia Encyclopedia. There are 6 article reviews that he grades pretty roughly, but drops the lowest. Classes are mainly lectures, only two tests (midterm and final). There are also pop quizzes, so make sure you read beforehand.
Dont take him as a prof online because he will destroy you on your tests even if you studied for several hours. amen
Best professor ever!!!
Took Dr. Parker under recommendation from many of my friends. He is knowledgeable of the material, will respond to emails fast, but the tests are filled with some of the most obscure materials from his lectures. Very repetitive in learning content and does not shift anything around. Spent atleast 4 hours of reading a week OUTSIDE of class.
Dr. Parker is a very respected and inspiring professor. He made history actually enjoyable.I learned a lot. You do have to read and take the time to listen to lectures, but if you have a question he will take time to talk over it with you. Dont be afraid to ask. He is strict on things because he cares about your success in school and life. Yes!
I like history because of him
I took the honors HIST2111. His lectures are great compared to other history teachers. He's not a harsh grader and his quizzes are a breeze aligned with the textbook. His papers are 1000 words, but they aren't too bad just over what the book is. 2 exams and they seem average difficulty. He's flexible/accessible and provides feedback on work.
You will learn a lot by taking this course and Dr. Parker teaches the subject in a way that makes the content more engaging (lots of interesting primary sources and readings). There are writing assignments that are about a page long every week or two and the two exams (midterm and final). Can not have more than 10 absences (even with excuses).
Dr. Parker is a good professor! His assignments can seem tough, and require a lot of reading. However, if you just set aside the time necessary, you'll do well. Midterm and final are extremely difficult; he puts a lot of obscure terms on their. My advice is to write down any name, place, or thing he mentions and study with a group.
I took this course as a Summer course. There were weekly reading/short answer assignments (essentially a paragraph or two summarizing what you read) due before first day of class in a given week. He's very nice, although it's hard to figure out at times which of what he's saying is important to remember and which isn't.
I took his class online for the summer semester I can say that you should be ready to read his lectures. They are from the book but are summarized. He gives test previews and they are very helpful and the tests are set up like his previews. Overall I had a great experience.
as long as you give a decent effort it is very easy to do well in this course. it is set up to ensure your success. heftily weighted final but fairly simple
I took this online and mostly enjoyed it. The module assessments & discussions were straightforward. The tests, however, are extremely hard. They covered around 8 modules each and consisted of short-answer, short-paragraph answers, and essay questions. I have a partner in a master's program who said these tests seem harder than any they have taken.
I wish I had him in person! Very caring, fast grader, and responds to emails fast! Changes course requirements every semester, but for Summer 25 there were 6 disc (30%), 15 module assess (22.5%), Midterm (20%), Final (27.5%). Lectures/reading are informative & entertaining. Lenient grader. Exams (lockdown + webcam) are easy, Study lecture notes!!!
