Be sure you know chem BEFORE you take this class. He will treat you as if you can learn this stuff on your own, GOOD LUCK. There are so many people lost in this class so at least you won't be lonely. Small group work, learning diary's and portfolios
Thinks you can learn chemistry by yourself, not very helpful. Creates a lot of annoying work like learning porfolio's and diaries....unnecessary for a science class
He has a diff approach to teaching, but this is one of those classes where you can skip lecture, follow his online learning goals, and ace the tests. This is def true for real science majors, but everyone else might suffer. Better than other profs in chem
Run and hide, horrible teacher, expects you to teach yourself EVERYTHING. you also need to do journals and portfolios about what your learning....garbage class
Don't take his class if you want/need to learn chemistry. With the expectation that students should teach themselves, he isn't good for science majors, or any other student for that matter. After his class, you might want to take chem over again.
Parkin is a very smart individual who knows his stuff, there is no doubt about that. The trouble comes in when it comes to his teaching skills. His way of teaching is very very very different. Even though he’s a bit of an **** in general, his class is
be afraid. Be VERY AFRAID!!!
his class is the equivalent to a 16 week suicide mission. Ask your neighborhood if you think I'm lying. Then write how you feel in your diary.
he will help u but IN a VERY ODD way and kinda ****y way too. some ppl struggle wit his style of teaching, i could see why but i did ok and i guess his style suits me. HE KNOWS his STUFF just teaching it can be difficult. is better than most chem prof
take anyone esle besides this man.He should have been a philosphy teacher because thats all he pratices. Not for people who want/need to learn chemistry. You'll be more frustrated than anything. Stay away! You have been warned.
Well, Parkin indeed has a very different approach. He is also really moody. Very unorthrodox but i disagree with the fact that you won't learn anything. You can learn, just gunna take extra effort that most are too lazy to apply.
Completely off the wall requirements for an intro chem class. Learning journal? Small Group Presentation spanning 2 semesters? Teaching yourself everything? That's garbage, boys and girls. This class isn't worth your time and money. Take

Some of the comments for parkin are unwarranted. Seems to me its more about students who dont' do well to begin with, trying to pin their inefficiencies on the prof. Parkin's style is more engaging than other boring lecture types.
I THINK HE POSTED THAT HIMSELF>> BE AFRAID BE VERY AFRAIDSome of the comments for parkin are unwarranted. Seems to me its more about students who dont' do well to begin with, trying to pin their inefficiencies on the prof. Parkin's style is more engaging than other boring lecture types.
Dr.Parkin is a brilliant professor and a great lecturer. He ensures that students walk away from his class knowing the information. His teaching style is different but it works! He is also very down to earth and approachable: go to him with a question and he will open up his office to you!
VERY arrogant man..intimidating, at times makes you feel stupid. Very organized and gets the information across, but in a different manner. If he was more approachable and friendly..i probably would of asked more questions and done better in class.
NEVER EVER take a class with this guy!!! if you have to take his class like I did for BIOCHEM consider going to a different school and transfering the credits in. he is the worst prof I have ever had. He makes you take all tests on your time outside class, keep a learning diary, and a learning portfolio. he takes over lab and doesnt teachallthetime
at first he was alright. but then when you go to ask him question he answers back sarcastically with a question "did you look at the learning goals"
horrible...horrible...would rather amke his students feel stupid than help them out...thinks you are supposed to understand everything yourself...not helpful at all
Parkin is like Jekyle and Hyde. One day &/or minute he can be approachable and pleasant. The next he becomes sarcastic, arrogant, self serving & mean. If you have no relevant Chem knowledge, BEWARE. You must learn independently, he offers little help with out insult and injury as a motivator :-( Also he frquently says things and forgets, BEWARE
He is very sarcastic. I had him at night, difinitely not a night person. Be prepared to damn near teach yourself and all that group learning is a waste of time. You don't know chem, your classmate doesn't know chem, you might as well get paid to show up and teach yourself. Also the book is always incorrect and you will be told to disregard that inf
Good chem teacher! Makes it easy for you to understand. Is very fair. Of course there has to be A LOT of studying involved, and for all of those people who complain about it, what did you expect? i mean, it is chemmm!
That last comment could have been written by him! "Dr Dave" thinks he's so great-every students friend. Then ask him a question and you'll get all the retoric about "This is CHEMMMM it's meant to be hard". Yes but you're also meant to explain things not just launch into some dumb speech about learning objectives&his teaching philosophy 1000 times!!
The problem with "Dr" Parkin is that he thinks he knows everything; He has fooled with that lie some people in the Dept as well as some people in administration-just for flirting with them. There is nothing called "teacher" in him, he just makes up tales about chemistry and you catch him when you ask a simply question, then you see his face......
OMG!!! HE is great if youre a Chemistry or Bio major. For the avg nursing student, its over kill. He makes you feel like roadkill. HE's very aggressive in his ways. ITs also Chem, and its hard. HE doesnt teach, he "simply guides you inthe direction". Goodluck. in fact you'll need prayers. (Sorry)
i feel like this guy has two sides. encourages asking for help then when i did he either put me on the spot or ignored me. but i probably shouldn't complain because he did suprise me with my grade for the semester , a B- and i was expecting a D
He is a great professor...if you listen to what he asks you will do good in his class. He is very understanding and it would be to your benifit if you see him.
I love Dr. Dave!! He's not the easiest professor, but if you do what he asks (ie. learning goals) and understand it, you'll get an A. I would recommend that you go to recitation.
DO YOUR LEARNING GOALS--they are literally what he puts on tests!! Thats really all the advice I have for you.. Recitation was like a joke, I barely went. I hate chem with all my heart but I found Dr Dave to be an amazing professor.. totally unique way of teaching. If youre the type where you need to memorize from the textbook, dont take him.
He is a funny and sarcastic person who will not hesitate to make fun of you if he feels that you do not know basic chemistry. If you really want to learn about chemistry, take this course because the learning goals are difficult.Make sure that you are ready to go visit him often to do the learning goals and be prepared for belittling languages.
i dunno....parkin is def LAZY!! he goes by this stupid "Pogil" approach that really does not help in learning the material!!! its a 100 level course, i feel like this entire semester i taught myself everything, all he did was eat pretzels and have people buy soda for him...dont take him, i thought professor goldberg was terrible, but parkin is wors
professor parkin is def a different professor comapred to other professors!! HE REALLY WANTS HIS STUDENTS TO LEARN! anddd hes very generous wit the grading..you may be gettting a C average but he will surprise u wit the grade you get at the end. over all the guy is reeallly nice always sticks to his WORD no matter just be prepared to really learn!
this professor doesnt even lecture I wasted my $3000 for this class. He just passes the students that he likes.
he is an ok [professor. he does have his days where he is rude. Does not teach - you have to learn by yourself
Very Mean man. He doesn't answer questions. His tests are pretty fair if you do the learning goals he gives you will do well on the tests.
He makes you really scared in the beginning. But in the end he's really not that bad. Just be prepared to work hard all semester!
Worst proffesor in the universe. does not teach a word, he wants you to do everything yourself, which is fine if u no chem before going in2class, bt not good if you dont know it. A
Prof. Parkin Is One Of Those Teachers That Doesn't Play Around. He's Definitely A Tough Guy In The Beginning. If You Don't Even Try To "Engage The Brain", He'll Just Move On. Learning Goals Are A Must. But, He Actually Wants You To Know The Material, You Just Have To Put A Little Elbow Grease. If He Sees That You're Tying, He'll Ease Up On You.
His bark is really much worse than his bite. as long as you try and he knows it it is not hard to do well.
Expects you to know what he has not taught. Yells and treats students like they are children and not grown ups. Run when you can coz if you have no chem background you'll find it hard to get the required grade.
he was really unhelful and i found that he did not know how to respect the sudents
HORRIBLE PROFESSOR! extremely rude and blunt to students. DONT TAKE HIM he cant teach or lecture for his life, he throws problems at you and expects you to know the answers and if you dont you get to hear, "DONT YOU HAVE A BRAIN?" save urself the horror
If you follow the learning goals you will be just fine. He's a little hard to understand bc he doesn't really give u the answers. wants u 2 get them on ur own. if u like learning then you'll respect him. he'll be helpful as long as he sees youre serious about school
never gives you a straight forward answer. ever. if you ask him a question prepare for a 10 min discussion that confuses you even more than you already were. chemistry is confusing and i did the work and did well, but there is no need for him to make it more confusing. I'm not bashing him, he's nice and really smart. maybe too smart to teach this.
I dont understand all the harsh comments about Dr Parkin. He is a really great professor. Yes, he does not give the answers out like many other professors, but he really does care about his students and goes out of his way to make sure they can learn and fully understand the topics. Just study the learning outcomes and practice. Overall great prof
Follow the SLO's and you will be FINE! I was so afraid of him my first weeks of class but followed along and DID EXACTLY WHAT HE TOLD ME TO DO and got an A! Have to study to do well in this class, make sure you take him for chem he makes up the final not the other teachers so its best to have him to know his methods
Tough professor but really knows his stuff. DO THE SLO's - it's literally whats on the exam. He seems intimidating and it might seem impossible, but yes, it is possible to get an A in the class. If you really put the effort in from the beginning, you'll be fine.
hes not help. you work in groups all the time and when you ask questions all that he says is ask you group and if your group doesnt know you have to learn on your own. and he doesnt give make ups even if youre missing an exam to have surgery. hes an jerk and rude and no help. awful teacher.
Parkin is intimidating and REALLy wants you to learn the material. He makes the departmental final and teaches based on the SLOs so I HIGHLY recommend him over the others. He really knows what he is talking about. Not a conventional teacher that lectures, he wants you to come to the answer on your own instead. I'd take him again.
He has such a bad rep, but is truly an amazing teacher. Sincerely cares about the students and knows the most effective ways of learning. Brings in munchkins and coffee for us frequently :) Follow what he says and you will get an A.
I was nervous about taking Dr.Parkin because of these reviews. But honestly, he's the best professor I've ever had. Dr. Parkin will make you work hard, but in the end, it's all worth it. He truly cares about his students. His class quickly became my favorite class this semester. Take Dr.Parkin for Chem 109. You won't regret it!!!
Dr. Dave is the man. His teaching methods are amazing! To get an A in his class: As for tests, STUDY THE TLO's. The TLO's are LITERALLY the test. Get mostly 100s or at least 90s on the EASY online quizzes. Get 10/10's on the labs. (Also EASY) He gives so many bonus points and opportunities to do well. Idk why people tend to dislike him. I got an A.
He truly wants you to learn the material and understand it. The class can be a lot of work, but you will actually be proud of your grade. He gives you everything necessary to do well. He may not appear approachable, but that is because he wants YOU to find the answer. Take him for chem and you will benefit from it in the future.
He wants you to do well for sure. He doesn't really lecture but the TLOs are the test. Ask him any questions during office hours and he is more than helpful. Wasn't even my teacher and he offered to help me practice. His classes are usually early in the morning, thats why i didn't, but if you're willing to wake up, TAKE HIM
He is a great professor. This is coming from a student who is terrible at chemistry. He is hard. He will not answer questions directly unless you show him that you tried doing it yourself and you spoke to your group as well. his way of teaching makes you understand and know the subject and pass a very hard class.
DR. D was a great professor. At first I was worried I would not do well in his class but that was not the case. He definitely does not give you answers but trust me it for your benefit. I think his method works. I love his way of solving DA problems. Using his method made med calc a breeze.
Let me give you the real about Dr. Parkin. I got a B working EXTREMELY hard. Maybe the hardest I ever worked in a class. You Will leave this class understanding how chemistry applies to the everyday practice of nursing. You will work for every grade. This class is hard but if you study hard and PRACTICE a good grade is possible. He's funny too!
He's a great professor but he DOES NOT answer questions. I really had to bust my ass for a C+
The way I studied was for an A, but I got a B+ because his tests were DIFFICULT. However I learned SO much in that class, and would definitely take him again. Good luck
Dr. Parkin is one of the most amazing professors I have ever encountered. When I was registering last semester I used Rate My Professor and dreaded taking this professor. I was wrong. His class is not only educational, but enjoyable. Expect to work out of class . Dr. Parkin is very dry, but one of the few people who actually cares about you.
Makes you learn because you do absolutely everything yourself. Many times can be very rude. Quizzes are online so you can do well on those, exams have extra questions so you can get some wrong, you need that when someone don't teach. You must do all TLOs yourself or you wont pass. You go to him for office hours where is more helpful but not great
I have never studied for a class as much as I did for this class and wound up with a B. Everyone at Adelphi will tell you not to take Parkin but I am telling you take him! He comes off not helpful at first but thats far from the truth! Do all TLO's and attend office hours. He is the one who makes the final so you will be prepared the best! TAKE HIM
Must learn everything yourself. Helpful in office hours but not in class. In recitation, he helps a bit, but he doesn't like you saying, "I don't understand." At some points, I felt so overwhelmed and crazy bc of the difficulty and group work that I had to do all myself. A lot of group work and he doesn't care if your group members do nothing.
Heartless excuse for an educator. Avoid this so called professor at all costs
Dr. Parkin is not an easy professor. But he is worth the good grade! He is a very great professor! His way of teaching works if you don't fight the process. No he does not give answers, you must find them on your own. He does show you how to self teach, which in nursing is important. And his way of doing DA is the best!
Dr. Dave is the BEST chemistry professor that I have ever had. I dreaded taking his class because of the scary reviews I saw, but I was stupid for thinking that. He is an AMAZING professor, who treats every single student with care His class is not easy, but very doable for someone that actually wants to learn. I am HORRIBLE at chem and got an A!
I found this class to be a lot easier than people were making it seem. Attend lectures, participate, ask questions, review before the test, and you'll be fine. He WANTS to work with you, so just don't be intimidated to ask him for help. Don't buy the new edition lab book - only one person in the group has to have it and it's expensive.
Wants to fail you. Beware, anyone else is better.
Dr. Dave was AMAZING! He wants all of his students to pass and he gives you numerous resources to do so. It's true that he doesn't answer questions, he wants you to learn them on your own and it's really beneficial. I'm horrible at chemistry and I got an A- in the class
Dr Dave is a very unique professor, I don't think he wants to screw on his students but definitely not a walk in the park. Well maybe if the park was on fire and you were on fire. But in all seriousness, he is tough but You won't regret taking him. Ashame, I guess we didn't leave on good terms but I think he is a good guy
he's a bad teacher and a bad person, so avoid this Bozo at all costs
Dr. Dave doesn't teach, simple as that. His class is equivalent to taking an online course. He uploads documents and expects u to teach yourself then yells at the class to "activate the brain" (his favorite phrase.) But he surely does keep u busy with 1-2 online quizzes a week, lab reports, pre-labs and plenty of assignments.
Honestly... take him. Youll definitely struggle, but if you keep up and keep working. Youll get the grade you deserve from your hard work.
he makes you work for your grade, but if you put in the effort and he sees you trying it will make your chem experience so much better. He can be extremely frustrating to the point where you will feel so frustrated and overwhelmed, but it is for your benefit. You get online quizzes every week but you have mant attempts to take them. Stay organized
He is perfect
At the beginning of the semester, i was so overwhelmed. it was really hard. but once you get the hang of it, its not bad at all. hes so nice and he really cares about his students. he wants you to pass and do well. listen in class and review and youll be okay. im gonna miss him!
Going into his class I was nervous that I wasnt going to do well because I read terrible reviews. This professor is hands down the best college professor Ive ever encountered. The class is A LOT of work, but if you put in the effort you come out with a good grade and you know the material. Hes generous with extra points, hes great!
Before going into his class, I heard nothing but negative things..I now realize those people didn't know what they were talking about! Dr. Dave can be hard on the class at times, but in reality he just wants us to succeed. He brings cookies& coffee to class occasionally and always gives bonus points for exams! Such a sweet man please take his class
Hands down the best & most genuine prof. at Adelphi. This class is tough but he truly prepares you for nursing & makes you think. Relates everything to nursing. Can be extremely frustrating at times but seriously cares about his students. Fall 20 is the last semester he's teaching so I highly recommend you take him!! Truly cares about his students!
Parkin is really caring and wants you to do your best! Sometimes he might be a bit intimidating, but he really does want you to achieve the best grade you can. He brings in cookies and candy to class, and overall is a great professor.
Prof. Parkin is a gem. Yes, hes intimidating sometimes because he has high expectations for all but he also doesnt leave you high and dry. He guides everyone to become successful all you have to do is engage yourself and STUDY. The course alone is difficult but I felt he tried his best to help us without cheating us of knowledge and learning!
Against what I was told I decided to take Parkin for chem and I thought he was a great teacher! He does a different type of lecture where he keeps you very involved, making you not fall asleep at 7 am lol. He gives a lot of homework but it is all in prep for the tests so in the long run you wont have to study a lot before the test.
This is by far one of the worst professor I ever had. He is rude and unprofessional, he does not teach at all. When students ask him for clarification all he does is yell at them and makes them feel small. His exams are nothing what he teaches in classes. You have to teach yourself everything without guidance.
Dr. Dave is quite unique in that he doesn't babysit his students. Sure, he will throw a curveball at you sometimes and you need to figure things out by yourself, but that's his philosophy and mannerism of teaching. Tests are not difficult and reasonable as long as you set aside time to study. Definitely worth your while!
For 1, Dr Parkin does not teach. You have to teach yourself the material, and do the tutorials multiple times to learn. The course load is A LOT. the assignments/lab work that he gives is way too much (on top of a project that takes all semester). If you ask any questions, he will not give you the answer. And he comes off rude
Chem is a tough class and Dr. Dave doesn't directly teach, its more of a guess and learn style of teaching. its very frustrating and the group work is unreasonable, but his class is passable at best. The group you're assigned to definitely impacts your outcome in this class so pray for good group mates! If theres another prof available try them
I'm not the first to say this, but he is definitely a hard man. Makes you work for your grade and definitely won't give out free answers to anything, especially the easy questions. Honestly felt like 90% of my attention this semester had to pay attention to this class. But if you have decent groupmates and go to him for help a lot, you should pass.
