No homework graded.Tests are sorta hard, depends on student, not reccomened hwvr
Seems like he's only marking time.
Not a good teacher. Hard class. Does not prepare you for tests. When I went to ask him for help during his scheduled office hours, he told me no because he was going to help the lab put up chairs.
Very difficult to understand. Not helpful. Very hard class. Do not recommend at all!!!!
very unhelpful, was unwilling to help any studentsor answer any questions. worst teach i ave ever had.
hard to understand but he was very helpful with me
Very unhelpful. Hard-nerdy-not fun
He teaches on a high level which capacitates a student to learn a lot from him. He is an all around great guy. His comperhension for math is impressing. Take his class if you want to be highly educated!
Well, he's tough, but if you are willing to learn and put the effort into the class you will get a lot out of it. His tests were pretty hard, but he gave extra credit to make up for that, so as long as you did the HW, then you wouldn't have any problem.
the guy has it all + the mind of a genius
He can show you great shortcuts and help you with just about any calculator....smart guy, alittle corny but its math, you know?
Very hard! I dropped because I had an F in the class, I took the same class during the summer with a different teacher and passed with a high A.
Dropped the class because class started with 24 students and now has about 6 or 7 remaining ... avg on first test was 50% and avg on second test was 57% ...
This has to be the worst teacher I have ever had!! I have always loved math - and always get A's. On the first day of class he told the class not to "Ask any stupid questions". I'm sorry - but I thought there were no stupid questions!! I had to drop the class because he didn't explain anything well.
thus by far the worst teacher! doesn't attempt to make it to class on time, or makes so much effort to make you feel inadequate to pass the class very boring..if hes 10 mins late, he'll make you stay till 10 mins after the intial time you're suppose to stay there..makes alot of corny jokes
He was the rudest and mose UNHELPFUL teacher. DO NOT take his class. Go out of your way and take Algebra in Poland if you have to. I am sure he is a math genious - but it takes more than brains to teach a class. It takes patience and tact. Both of which he doesn't have.
By far the worst teacher that I have ever had. He is very unclear and very rude. I was very excited about taking college algebra because I am very smart as my g.p.a. shows and I was looking forward to a challenge but david patocka is not a challenge he is a natural disaster at best.
this guy is WAY too serious about math! his tests are ridiculously hard and most of the people in my class ended up dropping. he wastes class time with stupid jokes and provides USELESS example problems to use up any extra class time! DONT TAKE HIM
Horrible teacher!! Worst ever! Wouln't recommend to anyone! Thinks he is a genius!! Worse jokes ever..I took him 2 times and dropped both semesters! He is too difficult!!
He is by far the worst professor I have ever had.He is late, rude,& wastes time in class telling stupid jokes, or showing examples that don't help. He also does not explain things well and makes you feel stupid. I am teaching my self,do yourself a favor and find another teacher you will be thankful.
He teaches well, however he only allows tests, to determiine your grade. Homework assignments are long.
Worst grade I've had. Worst math teacher I've had. Really nerdy and tends to go off on subjects that I didn't get.
I also dropped this class. I came in with fairly decent knowledge of the topic and expected to pull off an A(especially at community college) and was totally shocked by the difficulty of the class. He can't explain things, not willing to help in class, is in his own little math world.
Horrible teacher, I took him as my 1st college math classes and one of my 1st college classes. I've always made straight A's, until him. He was extremely hard, tests had material that he hadn't covered, and you could get lost very easily after a few words, he was very unclear. Would NEVER advise taking this professor.
Very Hard and Difficult To Understand! WARNING: His Lectures Could Be Considered Cruel And Unusual Punishment...
HIs class is very hard. Unlass your a calc. major, I suggest you stay away. He is not halpful, even in one-on-one tuttoring, I still failed his class. STAY AWAY!!!
He's very hard...that's for sure...I am a good math student...and I struggled to make a B in his class.
Knowledgeable yes, to a weird degree.. good teacher, not by a long shot. Do yourself a favor and don't even try any of his classes.
very difficult. He would be a great instructor for the highest math classes, but not algebra 1 or 2. I did not do well at all!!
Worse algebra teacher at school. Very nerdy and thinks he is a chess god. I always passed any math class without even trying, took this class and tried very hard and ended up having to drop the class. Run!!!!
Whatever you do..do not take this teacher! He goes very fast! All work is done online and test are way hard! I had to drop his class and I took calc/trig my senior year in high school! Take my advice...take someone else!
he wastes time telling jokes you do end up teaching yourself most the time because HE gets lost in his lectures about wasting your time, the homework wasn't hard but it takes FOREVER the tests weren't insanely hard but they werent easy...(((they're tests...)))
This man is really really hard. almost everyone failed most of his exams he gave in class. we started with 32 students at the beginning of the semester and by the time the class was over, there were only 12 students left that did not drop! take his class at your own risk. I hated college algebra before I took his class, now I really hate it!!
Teacher shows little intrest in the welfare of any students. Did not care that the class average was at 51 percent. Extreamly difficult class. I am ranked near the top with an A, but absolutly hate the class. This is my hardest class. DO NOT TAKE! If you are already enrolled, I advise doing the Extra Credit he offers.
Very good instructor
Knows his stuff, but has a hard time explaining the material to a large audience. His open office hours are the only reason I passed.
Class is difficult but that was expected. Everyone needs to expect math to be difficult. Extremely helpful professor, always on time, and kept regular office hours. Home work was all online and if you expect to do good on tests, prepare to study all the material in-depth. Very passionate about math and patient.
Majorly bad experience. He seems to be more interested in himself and showing off his knowledge than actually explaining things. He did offer office hours for extra credit but when I asked him to set up an appointment with me because his hours were during my work hours(I work in the medical field and can not take off)he refused. Would not recommend
he's a good professor, and really understands the material, just really hard. you'd better know math.
i use to love math and did extremly well till this class. He is very intrensted in his subject, but does not do a very good job at helping students learn the material. All the tests are curved MAJORLY. Do not take earllly in the morning, too many corny jokes too early.
Great guy, knows material extremly well. Stale jokes though. He moves at a consistant pace that is easy to follow if your not lazy. I'm going to take him for a 3rd class. I couldn't remem. math until him. He will help you whenever you need it. Tests are easy if you give effort, and he does them on a curve. W/O feeling stupid, you'll learn math.
I do not like math. I got an A. It was hard. I put in a lot of time. It was worth it though. I thought he was a good teacher. He expects you to be a grown up. Read your syllabus and do what he tells you - you will be fine.
Okay, when I read the comments previously posted about Mr. Patocka, I seriously wanted to drop the class. The class average test grades consistently range from 50-60% and the dropout rate is 50%. However, I learned that Mr. Patocka is EXTREMELY helpful if you make use of his office hours and are prepared with specific questions when you arrive.
very corny jokes. just pay attention.
so i have been in his class for two days and i already hate it. dont take this class. i asked if we had quizzes in the class and he gave me a blank stare with a comment that was extremely rude. he made me feel like i should have known that there would be no quizzes in that class. he teaches the class like you know what your doing.i hate this class.
WOW! I already knew chapters and made A's on chapters 1-3 but when I listened to him teach it I was thoroughly confused! I am dropping this class. He teaches from a very, very advanced level and I didn't understand anything hardly.
he is very hard, but what math teach isn't hard. He is very helpfull though. If you ask him to go over somthing he will and he is very patient. I read at the begining that he is monotone. I think just the opposite. I think he tries to keep math as upbeat as math can be. He does have corney jokes, but they aren't that bad.
I took his college algebra class after I failed twice with other professors. It was time consuming, but he grades on a curve and is very clear about expectations. Teaches application to make it interesting. Really helpful if you are willing to ask. Will explain different ways until you understand.
mr. patocka is a terrible excuse for a teacher. he's not funny, and he just babbles non-stop in class. if you are also a 40 or 50 something year old math geek, then maybe you will understand he's saying, because i sure can't. i shouldn't even go to class. also, he's kind of uppity. i'm gonna fail, and that's time and money wasted.
I took Patocka last Spring and it was not an easy class. His teaching methods are good, but you really have to study and get involved if you expect to learn anything. Suggestions, would be show up to the class and USE THE MATHLAB!!! Homework isn't too hard, since it is online. If you really want to learn the subject this is a good class to take.
He is a fun teacher who is teaching college level math. Math is hard. Be prepared to spent hours on the material. He grades tests on a curve. He tells you his expectations. Homework was easy since its online. No curve on final exam. I disliked math & I made an A So its possible if you put forth the effort.
He's a fun teacher who is teaching college level math. Math is hard. Be prepared to spend hours on your material. grades tests on a curve. Online homework on coursecompass is easy. The final is not graded on a curve. I disliked math and I made an A so it's not impossible if your prepared to spent alot of time on the material.
Yikes. Did NOT enjoy this class. Incredibly dull teacher of an incredibly dull subject. His grading scale is the only saving grace. The final can replace the grade of any other test that you scored lower on.
Cool teacher, kinda corny and laughs at own jokes. don't talk during lectures, he hates that. NEED BOOK, DO HOMEWORK, TAKE NOTES--then you'll be good.
he is the hardest teacher i have ever had.
Does not teach very well. If you can teach yourself calculus then you will be alright except for the screwballs on tests. I never had a problem with math until his class which I dropped then took Fran French and got an easy A. I don't recommend this teacher.
He is really confusing when he teaches. He will spend 1/2 an hour on one problem, and take up the ENTIRE class time. If you're really good at math, you could survive, if not I would suggest taking someone else.
He is very unclear when he teaches and short tempered.
He really gets into the nitty-gritty of calculus. If you have previous experience in calc you can do well in his class. if you're like me and are new to it STAY AWAY! He teaches it just fine, very well actually, but his tests are ridiculous. I have A's in all my classes and never fail tests, but I never passed a single one of his. Seriously.
Prof Patocka is very helpful. always ready to explain until you grasp it. 3 tests and a final. your final counts for any grade lower than it. I failed all of his test except the final and passed with a C. Great sense of humor & very nice. homework on Compass is 1/5 of your grade so you have to do it. he is very thorough and awesome!
I took this professor for college algebra, and he is by far the worst professor I've had in college!! Although he's a nice guy, he gets upset at the most ridiculous things. I've witnessed him move students simply because they asked someone for a pencil. He allows absolutely NO talking. His lectures are confusing and useless as well. Dont take him!
Great teacher took him for beginning algebra. I had no interest what so ever in math, and though I would never be able to understand it until i took his class. Sense of humor is a little dry and is very strict on things like having a cell phone but easy to understand and very helpfull
He is pompous and impatient. Even though he actually tries to teach you instead of just working off math lab, it's still incomprehensible. And so is the little gold medallion he wears everyday. :)
Overall, he knows his math. But, when it comes to treating students right, he doesn't. :( He would often make fun of "dumb" people and rant, getting off the topic at hand. He is very impatient with students.
While it is unfortunate to say, David Patocka is perhaps one of the worst teachers I have had. He spends more time telling irrelevant stories and ranting about the issues he has with society than actually teaching. He also has a very pompous and "stuck up" attitude toward students and will insult them for wrong answers. I urge you all to avoid him.
He is the worst! He has no patience for those who do not understand, then makes fun of students who are not asking questions. The online homework is required, but is not helpful in learning the material. Also...he talks...with long...pauses...ESPECIALLY...when he is making a point. His lectures are not helpful in understanding the problems.
If you are someone who can just read the book and learn it all this is the guy for you. If you need help or more explanation your "sol"
He is incredibly arrogant and impatient. This guy just got under my skin. He teaches for a few minutes and goes way off subject by ranting about the problems he has with the general population of students. Truly an obnoxious human being. AVOID
he doesn't teach the material, yet somehow expects highly of his class. he also has a serious chip on his shoulder. avoid taking his class
What he teaches in class is irrelevant to the homework and both of those have nothing to do with the tests he gives. He expects you to learn everything from the book and teaches nothing that will be helpful to your grade. He is rude to people who ask question that he assumes you should know and makes fun of people who don't.
This is the guy who was picked on in high school and is now in a position of authority. He rants for at least 20% of the time about being better students. He does not teach the material but expects his students to understand. DO NOT TAKE!
You need to learn a lot of basic algebra in advance before taking his class. Before coming to class, be prepared to know the material! He works problems on the board expecting you have learned the material. Study hard. He doesn't give a review for his tests. Learn the material and you should pass the class. There were only 4 kids in my class.
This teacher is extremely rude. He is not helpful at all with concurrent students and has caused alot of issues with the high schools. You dont use the book and he DOESNT teach in class what you really need to know. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!!!!
I'm math illiterate and this class really helped me achieve better algebra goals. He always used the book. He expected you to take notes and read through chapters and was always available during and after class for questions. I attended class regularly, he gives easy extra credit, and final had questions from previous tests. I highly recommend!
Mr. Patocka was really helpful and went by the book; he's patient as well. He went over study guides before tests and was available after classes. Anyone who lambasted him in any of the other comments are the ones who failed to make a good effort and have no respect for learning; the man is brilliant. This class is nice & easy and you must take it.
I didn't like his class. He is not the best teacher. He does expect you to know Basic and Beginning Algebra before you go into his class. He doesn't go over the stuff you don't understand he just moves on. He also thinks he is funny with his jokes, but he is not.
I took Mr. Patocka for Math for Critical Thinking. Before I took the class I was extremely terrified of math. Because of Mr. Patocka and his patient helpfulness, I was not only able to conquer my fear of math, but I actually gained a better understanding of math and all that it entails. I would definitely recommend this teacher!
At first he seemed like a good teacher, but as the semester went on all he did was lecture about the math problems. Luckily I had taken this class right out of high school so I knew most of the material, but he is quite the boring teacher and presents the material poorly. You basically have to learn all of the material on your own.
If you are at school to learn, you will appreciate his thoroughness and helpfulness.
If math is not your strong point, do not take him. He will not explain any concepts algebra 1. He does not explain the steps of the math either. In the beginning of class talks about irrelevant topics. I had to drop the course. It was a horrible experience!!!
He is a tough professor, but he is very thorough and is willing to help in anyway. You must attend class or you will not do well.
His class is not one that you will be happy to walk into, however if you miss class and you don't have a good feel for math you won't be doing so hot. We barely used the book, but mymathlab was NECESSARY. His jokes are lame, but just do what he says and you can earn a good grade, pass, and just be glad to never have to see him again.
This course isn't easy to begin with. But this instructor makes this course understandable as long as you're willing to put in the effort it takes to pass the class. He's amazing at what he teaches (very knowledgeable; mastery skills). If you're looking for easy, not the instructor you want (but good luck with that)....He's a GREAT instructor!
He is the worst math instructor I have ever had. NOT helpful, doesn't answer your emails even though he tells you to, and to ask questions. What he tells you to study for the test is not at all helpful. I wouldn't recommend my dog to take his course!
His class is really challengin but only if u read will u pass. I remember takin my final exam and walkin 2 class, chill as hell(not studying the night before) and still made a B- on the final exam. I lucked out. My advice 2 u is to study A LOT before taking the test. He does offer help outside of class but most ppl don't take advantage of that
He was a very bad teacher. He expected you to already know things. He's always late to class and when he is late he doesn't go over all the material like he's suppose to, all he says is it ok since we're behind schedule well just skip that part. I DO NOT RECOMMEND HIM!!!!! DON'T TAKE HIS CLASS IF YOU WANT TO PASS WITH A GOOD GRADE!!!!
He is very knowledgeable on the subject. He is very willing to help in many ways, but expects you to work for it rather than handing it to you. If you want the easy grade, this isn't your kind of professor. On the other hand if you're willing to do the work expected of a college student and actually understand the criteria, he is outstanding!
He does not explain and expects you to know a lot of things. In 50 minutes, he goes through 2 examples which is never enough. Tests are really hard, nothing like the hw. I recommend taking someone else.
By the time I dropped the class with a "C" there were only 5 other people hanging on for dear life
He is a smart teacher but, dont take his class does not work out of the book that he makes you buy. He does examples out of the book then gives homework online and because of this the material does not connect and make sense he also likes to teach a billion ways to do one problem when teaching one is sufficient. He also likes to test on definitions
Just do yourself a favor and don't take any classes offered by this professor. All the homework is online which is hard because the program is very picky on how you display the answer and it counts it wrong most of the time even when it is right. so frustrating to have impact over your grade when you are right and his lectures are horrible no help!
If you want to do things the hardest way possible and still not learn the important material for the next class then this is the class for you. I got worse at math from this professor and was forced to go find a tutor to teach what he did not.
He doesn't take into consideration that some students have personal issues. If you have to go to the hospital, or get in a car wreck and let him know in advance that you can't be there, he won't let you make it up. If you're failing or on academic probation and ask for help he WILL NOT help you, he expects you to drop the course yourself.
Not what I expected. Teaching is very unclear, expects you to teach yourself, and never responds to emails about asking for help. If you want a good grade, I advise taking precaution when enrolling.
Great professor! You will most definitely learn if you take him. It is some work, but what math class isn't? He's good about answering email (very important!), will give you feedback, and truly wants you to learn. And as a bonus he has a dry sense of humor that makes class more fun. Take him!
This guy expects MATH students to READ the whole assigned pages before each lecture. Also, he spends about 45 minutes to solve one problem, however, he expects you to solve a similar problem in less than 5 minutes in the test!!
Let me start by saying, I'm not good at math. So.. I'd find any math class on the hard side. He does expect you to read but it is college! He's willing to help if you have questions, but you need to ask him. Plus asking for help, shows you're trying.
Tough class, but he's a nice guy. Made it interesting enough. Definitely not a class you can sleep through, but study, do the work, and ask for help and you should do okay. He's always willing to help if you need it.
There are many math professors at TCC please take any of them except this guy. Absolutely horrible complete waste of money and time for this class! Had to hire a tutor so i could actually learn something.
Tough class (it's math, so duh) but he's helpful and explains it well. Be sure to ask questions if your get stuck.
He made the class unnecessarily hard. He wasn't engaging through lectures, and provided too much homework that was online. For me personally, you can't do Math online with it's logical interpretation and imperative written work. I had to make extra work for myself on paper just to make myself understand what I was doing.
With so many bad reviews, would think TCC would drop him. Class was waste of money & time. No grades posted until almost semester end so had no clue where you stood. Perhaps inefficient or lazy, or perhaps it's intentional to keep the few students in class from dropping. Don't take him.
Not an easy class, but one of the best professors I've had. He really wants to see students succeed, so that helps.
Takes 30mins to do 2 problems. Homework received is harder than what you learn in class. If you do buy book Pearson comes with located in front of book. !!!Don't buy Pearson twice!!! Cant redo homework missed (Don't even bother). Not good at Math use someone else. Professor makes class confusing and tougher than it should be. Doesn't post grades!!!
Prof. Patocka is exactly what I needed for college algebra. He has high expectations and makes you work, but he truly wants to help you be successful. Good lectures and real world examples. Three multiple choice exams and the final, the lowest grade of which gets dropped at the end of the semester. 2-3 hw assignments per week. Very kind man!!
I'm so glad I took his class! He made College Algebra understandable through his lectures and gave plenty of real world examples. Homework is tedious, but helpful. It's obvious he cares about students succeeding and is more than willing to help, you just have to ask. I would definitely take more of his classes! Wish more professors were like him.
He is a very intelligent professor, but he is not very good at teaching others math. If you are good at learning math on your own I say go for it, but if you already struggle in math I don't recommend his classes.
This guy learned in a communist world apparently! He says if you record a lecture- he will sue you- he wants your cell phone if you step out and if you do step out- he will lock the door and if someone lets you in- you're both kicked out! He wants your cell on your desk where he can see it at all times! NEVER TAKE HIM! This guy is crazy! RUN!
Don't be late or you'll have to leave. 10 points extra credit given at the end of the semester if you bring a 6 pack of scantrons. Bring book to class because he will ask you questions out of the book. I personally didn't care to hear his jokes or anything. Don't bother asking for help, I only recommended if you're really good at math.
Honestly it's math. He can't be the worst but he isn't the best. It's noticeable he wants you to be successful but you have to put in the work. He does expect you to read your book just to look over somethings. Study, do the homework and you'll be fine. My class was over the summer lowest test school of 3 got dropped easy extra credit given at end
If you struggle in math this isn't the class for you. To be honest, I am in the process of dropping the class because he's such a bad professor. It takes him forever to solve one problem because he's too busy telling stories. He's terrible at explaining things and comes off very intimidating. Definitely would not recommend him.
I'm horrific at math, so any math class is going to be difficult. BUT, this dude is great. He explains everything very thoroughly and I actually enjoyed his lectures. Even though the work was still hard, his office hours are so open that I was able to go and get help often. He's a very kind person and genuinely wants the students to succeed.
He is very serious and there is a no talking policy and you cannot use any electronics except your calculator when he allows it. He is funny but it is usually witty comedy and goes over most peoples heads. You will need to do the work and study for the test, they are not easy. Hard class, but you will learn a lot. Never lets out early.
Somewhat abrasive and hard to deal with at first, but if you get past his seemingly prideful exterior, he is an amazing prof. He will continuously go over a concept until everyone understands and does not get annoyed with it. Explains things slowly and with detail, allowing for comprehension in a difficult subject.
Awesome professor. He seems strict at first, but really does care. Warms up and is more easy going as the semester goes on. Precalculus is hard, but he explains things well.
Do not enroll in his course. Spent a ton of time learning at home. He uses easy problems in class and much harder ones on homework with little time to turn it in. If you are a busy person and taking more than maybe 10 credit hrs dont take his class. Spent Hes slow responding to emails on problems. Overall worst teacher ive had
I have never been good at math, but I did surprisingly well in his class. I didn't like him at fist because he was pretty stern, but he got better as the semester went on. He is always willing to help and gives amazing extra credit before the final that will really help your grade. You do have to work for your grade and the tests are tough, STUDY.
David Patocka does not deserve the reviews he has. He is an amazing teacher. I had him for Calculus I and he explained every lesson with such genius and wit, and it helped me better understand all of the concepts. He gives online homework and 20-question, multiple choice tests. Definitely would take again.
If you want to know your grade during the semester, this guy isnt for you. he takes attendance and you get points counted off if you have to miss. hes a nice guy but hes strict and treats the students like their in middle school. He gets off topic a lot . hes a fine professor just really wasnt for me.
If you follow his rules, everything will be fine. The final exam wasn't hard, which would be a great opportunity to push up your grade. The quiz was like a gift from him.
Does not explain how to solve basic material/section problems so you don't know what to do on homework.
He did not cover many problems in class. He had many rules and made us ask to use the bathroom like children. He would often talk off topic and only cover 2 or 3 problems. If you are skilled at math I think you would do fine, but if you are not I would take someone else. I spent a lot of time on the homework.
I came into his class without pre-calc and trigonometry. He kinda scared me at first by telling me I had about a 2% chance of passing. However, he was very helpful and a great teacher. Nobody has ever put as big of a chip on my shoulder. Thanks Prof. ;)
He's a very nice guy, but he gets off track a lot. He doesn't do a lot of problems and expects you to ready daily from the textbook because he won't teach stuff that he expects you to know. Tip: Do the hw, participate a bit, and on the last exam, he'll reuse questions for exams 1-3 so memorize all questions if you want an easy final
David really does not seem like he loves his job and goes on irrelevant rants too often. He often skims over important steps. If you are someone who really struggles with math, please do not take him. He also only teaches his preferred methods instead of all of the possible ways you could learn a concept. Also does not let you go to the bathroom.
This professor knows his stuff and it shows. He does expect you to read the textbook, but is always willing to help you. YOu can tell he really cares about his students succeeding. You can't slack off, but if you put in the work you'll be fine.
He spent all his time going over one individual problem per class period. He intentionally withheld information and formulas because as a professor he said "it wasn't his job to teach us" and we should get our info from the book. He expected everyone to have a profound understanding of concepts and be able to apply them without ever teaching them.
Makes you keep your phone facedown on the desk where he can see it at ALL TIMES. if you want to leave for the bathroom you have to give him your phone. Only works the easy problems in class. Puts confusing questions on the exam. Makes attendance a quiz grade if a lot of people skip. Likes to lecture past the bell. I wouldnt retake him. controlling
It's not halfway through the semester and I can tell he isn't a good professor. He spends almost all of class working 2-3 problems but doesn't clearly tell you why he is doing certain things. He expects you to understand all of what is happening in the chapter before you get to class. Don't even get me started on his tests.
Refused to allow me to take my Midterm exam early (or make it up) due to being out of town during the only times it was available online for my GRANDMA'S FUNERAL. I was told I would have to take a zero and make it up on the final.
I spent 8 hours on a saturday doing half of the assigned homework for the week. Even if you read the textbook, he doesn't explain things so you're basically teaching calc 3 to yourself, not easy. This class made me drop out and change my major. That's how bad it was. I didn't even make it to the first exam bc I knew I shouldn't even waste my time.
Only does a midterm and final, final is comprehensive over the entire year. You are not allowed any form of cheat sheet on either. The book, tests, homeworks, and quizzes are all online. He has a habit of spending the majority of the lecture time talking about the importance of flashcard study.
Talks about himself a lot and students who he thought were bad. Refuses to teach anything in the textbook. Assumes that we should know everything he is talking about and if we do not its our fault. Claims he would help outside of class but its the same situation(and who would want to if he is already so difficult in class)
This teacher was very cold in the beginning of the semester but it was only to weed out the students who were going to drop. After this it was very nice. I enjoyed the class a lot and the good habits I picked up through this course were amazing. I suggest you take this professor but get ready to work hard.
Pros: Challenge yourself academically He IS accessible (and helpful) outside of class Final test grade can replace midterm if higher Cons: He goes off on tangents Expects you to understand the material before lecture He IS aggressive Tests are worth 50% of final class grade EXPECT TO WORK REALLY HARD DONT TAKE IF YOU HAVE A JOB/ LOTS OF CLASSES.
First of all he is a nice person when you talk to him outside of class, but he is very condescending in class and goes off on tangents easily. He likes bragging about mistakes past students have made and how he was right when he warned them. This professor expects ALL content to be learned from the textbook and int the lectures he teaches nothing.
He was completely unhelpful and not caring. I was struggling with access to the website he used to assign work and would not allow me to make up anything. He refuses to even mention what assignments are coming up. HE IS CONSTANTLY TELLING STUDENTS THAT IF THEY DO POORLY IT IS BECAUSE THEY ARE LAZY AND NOT BECAUSE OF ANY OUTSIDE FACTORS.
Tests are worth 50% of your grade. He will also lecture you about past classes and how they didn't read their textbooks when he wants you to remind you to read your textbook.
Mr. Patocka should be scored higher. Yes, reading the text is mandatory, there's lots of difficult homework, and the lectures aren't very helpful. But, I felt that the material was presented very well, and if you do as the professor recommends you'll really learn it thoroughly. There's plenty of resources for learning, and the exams weren't hard.
I would never take this course again. He does not teach anything in class and makes you read the textbook, and basically makes students teach it in class. He has also threatened to give a pop quiz if we don't answer within 10 seconds what we've learned from the book. It's hard to complete the class when if theres no teaching involved.
What a horrible class. Get someone else to teach you. This man does absolutely nothing but writes a few numbers out on the board then works problems out with them. Tells us nothing about how to relate it to our actual homework which we are forced to use "View an Example" on every single question or cheat. I know I will be failing the Midterm.
Lectures only partially help on assignments. Professor often went on side tangents that made no sense. No extra credit, late work, study guides, or printed notes. Does not post/update grades. Hard time accessing the textbook and the tutor center did not have any stats tutors so I was pretty much on my own. Very hard class.
From someone who struggeled with all levels of math, through his lectures he made it very easy for me to understand and pass. Homework was consistent and relevent to the coursework and lectures were easy to follow. The only nitpick is that he is very against technology in the classroom, absolutly no phones or alternate note taking methods.
Please for the love of all things do not miss a day in his class. Funny guy, good class, and in my opinion, good lecturer, but he will not help you in class: - schedule meetings with him if need be. His classes are not easy. - his classes are FAST paced.
Challenging class, but using Unstuck AI and the textbook helped me stay on top of things. Strict about attendance - no phones allowed! Tests are tough but fair. Overall, a rewarding experience.
Just overall not a good teacher. He was super strict and didn't really give us much help on anything.
Your performance in his class depends on your dedication to learn; no hand holding. Test scores weighed the majority of the grade, and final is comprehensive. Be sure to show up to class—Patocka's lectures are jovial and fairly paced, and he can answer your queries then and there. Read the textbook. His email is available if you have concerns.
You must pay attention. You can go into see him, it will not help. He does not give much feedback on what you should know. There are no study guides for the test.
He's very close to retirement and doesn't care anymore. He bullied one of the other students and was generally weird. The work wasn't very hard, but he's terrible at teaching. I had to reteach everything to myself afterwards.
He was very condescending and was never encouraging. He would always show up late then hold us over the class ending time. Exams will tank your grade. There is NO study information to help before exams and he tends to give quizzes right before the exams because he forgets about them.
Ehh, first days of the class and he was very rude and stern and nitpicky and VERY uptight. He treats his student as if they were robots and they needed to understand everything before he even began his lectures.
He is always rambling about him and his gf, ex wife, kids, random stories, ect. goes on about if you're not as good as him you're not good period. Up tight and not pleasant to be around and keeps you after scheduled class time is over.
The problem the exams are worth 50% of your grade. I had a 100% in the class till the midterm which was 10 questions and when I got a 50 it tanked my grade. I tried to talk to him but he didn't care and he claimed that he failed another student and that student thanked him for it. I retook the class with another professor and ended fine with a 97%
Read his syllabus and ask questions. He literally tells you what is required in the first minute of his classes. If you follow all of his advice, and seek understanding the topics (rather than rely on skating by) you will easily pass his class. I certainly do not think he deserves less than 3/5
This Prof. is incredibly unprofessional. He discusses his personal life too much and neglects to teach in class while insisting that the students teach themselves by reading the textbook. Don't bother asking for extensions, he won't give them to you. Most of your grade percentage is in the tests and he waits til the last min to put grades in.
This class only had two exams, which I failed both, but I completed all the homework assignments so I barely passed. This professor expects you to teach yourself the material outside of class and gets mad when you don't read the textbook beforehand (somewhat understandable). Spends the whole class period reviewing one problem, which isn't helpful.
76% of our grade was exam-based, we only had two exams: midterm and final. We had an online textbook but no electronics were allowed in class. He treated us like kids. If we had questions, he said we didn't read the textbook. His attitude would get better but then it return. Some of his methods actually made sense but overall I wouldn't recommend.
76% of my grade was based on the midterm and final, making all the homework essentially useless. He would sing in class (not in a fun way). And he wore capes too. He essentially told us that we were terrible people for not knowing about traffic, or archeological finds, citties away. He was an embarrassment to college, nice guy (maybe) though.
Lectures are for building understanding. If you want an A, put in effort to understand & learn the concepts. Homeworks are more about the application (sometimes extremely hard). Exams were the understanding. Homeworks are online, lengthy, and a bit confusing. There's a textbook, but I reccomend the videos the textbook provides. Very late grader.
