Professor Patrick is supposed to be teaching ENT327 Creating a Venture. The entire focus of his couse is growing an existing business. When asked if we were going to learn about actually starting a business he said no. Just no. He's a horrible professor. His grading criteria is unclear. Easily the worst class and professor I've ever had. Avoid him.
Professor means well, but the course is bumpy. Same lecture material over and over, sometimes with the same slide presentation! There is a term paper worth 30% of the final grade and it requires reading a marketing book as well as interviewing 2 marketing professionals-one must be at least at director level. A nice idea, but is it a good one?
Prof Patrick knows what he's talking about, but made this class feel like it was 5 credit hrs. We had an assignment before the very 1st day! 5 quizzes at the beginning, group projects & presentations, & long term paper @ the end. Doesn't grade your stuff quickly & get ready for minimal feedback. Offers extra credit, but who knows if he keeps track
can't talk to him outside of class, if you have a question it will take over a week to respond via email. cares more about his marketing career rather than the students. hes one of those professors that think marketing is your only class and you should always be working on group projects, term papers, or reading the book or you will fall behind.
Here we are in October and nothing has been graded since the second week of school. I've emailed him three times and only one got a response. Lots of projects and papers. A teacher you should try and avoid.
This class was absolutely TERRIBLE. The professor only lectured ten times the entire semester and made guest speakers run the class. Exam questions were true and false over his personal opinions. Profited off of students work. Gave untimely feedback with little to no guidance. Grades felt like random letters spontaneously assigned. DO NOT TAKE
Prof. Patrick is unprepared and unorganized. Few lectures offered are incoherent ramblings with amateurish slides. No feedback and assignments not graded until last week of class. I asked if he'd received an email and he smugly responded, "I get like 300 emails a day." Sitting through his class is likely worse for your brain than huffing gas.
Mr. Patrick is simply the worst professor I have ever had and I feel my degree is worth less having been taught by him. Lectures are the same material presented in different unorganized manners, he talks about how many jobs he's had and it's no wonder why he can't keep a job. Grades are returned the very last day possible, and no time to dispute.
Mr. Patrick's class is going to be difficult if you're expecting multiple choice assignments. This is an intro concepts class for a field where creativity meets structure. There is a great deal of autonomy in the projects so time management is critical. Guest speakers throughout the semester provide great contacts and book recommendations galore.
I recommend that any and all Bloch School students attempt to take at least one course with Professor Patrick. If you are looking for a challenge: enroll in MGT 471. You will learn more about strategy, business models, and actionable information in this class than in any other class in your time in business school. Do not fear a challenge. Take it.
Prof. Patrick is an amazing marketer and professor with insight for those seeking wisdom. You will learn from engaging case studies as well as David's personal, engaging stories. Assignments will require a lot of research, introspection, and deep thought. This professor's classes are for those who desire a challenge and lasting marketing knowledge.
You are put in a group for a group project on Day 1 which can be challenging. Overall, the professor cared for you if you put effort into the class. Participation is important to this very challenging course. Apply yourself to earn an A.
David Patrick brings real-world application to the classroom. You'll get out of David's class what you put in. If you're there to coast for an easy A, probably not the class for you, but it will prepare you and set you up for success outside of the classroom.
David Patrick's capstone class was the most valuable experience of my MBA. While many professors are purely academics who have only studied the topics they teach, David Patrick has made his living through marketing and entrepreneurship. He brings the real-world into his classroom and provides tools that you will actually use in your career.
If you're looking for an Easy A, this isn't where you'll find it. But, this class is so worth the work it requires. Professor Patrick will make you think deeper, inspire you to see new perspectives, and push you to reach your potential. To me, skating through is a waste of tuition dollars. Therefore, this was the most impactful class of my MBA.
This course was eye opening. I learned more then I ever thought about the Marketing field. Professor Patrick is very knowledge able and his real life experience and guest speakers added highly to the ability to learn. I am not a marketing major, nor did I ever think I would enjoy a marketing class, however I loved this class.
David's class is super engaging--you won't be daydreaming during this one! The reading material is relevant, the guest speakers are always interesting and he has a great way of encouraging the group capstone work. One of my favorite classes of the MBA program!
This was one of my last courses; I was ready to go through the 'school' motions and be done so I could focus on the real world. But I was greeted with an opportunity to actually learn something and engage with the real world/community- and I can't say that about the majority of my college career. Put in what you want to get out and you will tenfold
Professor Patrick will challenge you to think like a real marketer. His class and assignments are engaging and utilize current news instead of outdated text books. His real-world, CMO, experience is something you won't get from other professors. He is connected to the KC business scene and can point you in the right direction for internships/jobs.
I found this class to be extremely beneficial as Professor Patrick brought a different approach to the classroom by using real life examples as a way to challenge students to think for themselves. His class certainly requires work and research, but I think is one I recommend for someone who wants to understand the importance of marketing.
If you come to Dave's class expecting the usual, structured syllabus, you won't get it, and that's the best part. Dave is a marketer with decades of experience. He provides real-world instances, case studies and helps you learn through them. That education is something most tenured university professors can't provide. I enjoyed his class immensely.
Professor David Patrick had been one of the key professors I had in my college career. Not only did he have many years of experience in his field, but was able to convey these experiences into a teachable moment for his students. There are many anecdotes that you can take away from MKT 324 with Dave and further yourself into your business career.
I actually had David for two separate marketing classes, so obviously I found him helpful. He expects your participation but personally I like professors who care about your learning. He was clear on how to make a good grade, used real life examples, and made homework and class discussion relevant to the business world, while integrating theory.
Mr. Patrick teaches a class that you get what you put into it. He is super willing to meet with students outside of class and brings a lot of real-world, practical experience. He is very intelligent & caring. My only feedback was I wish we had a little more structure of what assignments were due, but it was also during COVID, and he works with you!
Prof. Patrick teaches in a way that is to not give you all the answers, but to make you think and be creative, which is what marketing is all about. As long as you keep up with reading material and participate in class you'll be okay. There is a huge group project, but staying on track is key. This class really gave me an understanding of marketing
Very project heavy, but if you start the work early you will be fine. If you are involved in class Prof. Patrick takes that into account when grading. A lot of this may be new to you, but the prof. knows that and takes that into account as well. If you participate and keep an eye on the due dates, there is no reason you should't pass.
Be prepared to actually manage your time and tasks in this class. Procrastination does not work here much like normal classes. I found the case studies in this class to be very helpful, a guest speaker who owns a marketing firm basically implied that our case studies were much like real life marketing studies. That said this is a real-world course.
An honest review from a non-marketing student. Everything you are reading about Prof Patrick is true, he knows his stuff. However, he expects CMO level of thought on all of your assignments and is the toughest grader I have had in college and I am a senior. He takes months to get your grades to you and is a slow responder via email. Not a fun class
I was shocked to see the good ratings here for Prof. P. almost as if EC was offered for good reviews. went from zero to hero on RMP. Prof. P was the worst prof Ive had the displeasure of having. grades are not consistent, returned months later, and disputes not heard/won't let you review his grading. Please stay away, don't let the reviews fool you
Professor David Patrick is an amazing professor. He really knows his stuff and is willing to help his students as long as they are willing to ask for it. His class focuses heavily on case studies. This is a hard class so if you don't show up you will not pass, and expect the unexpected. As long as you do the assigned work on time, you'll be fine.
Professor Patrick was a great teacher but really makes you think and use the topics learned in class beyond the surface level. Being able to memorize a definition will not suffice, you will need to learn how to think deeply about the information and marketing tools he teaches. He provides excellent feedback but takes a while to return projects.
You have to show up, pay attention and apply the knowledge. This isn't a class where you find all the answers on Quizlet. Laziness / relying on others in your group won't get you an A in this course. That said, I feel that I learned a lot and I'm not even a marketing major. I will try to take another class by Prof Patrick in the future.
Professor Patrick is one of the best professors I have ever had!. He knows what he teaches and have a tremendous experience in marketing outside of the classroom. Also, he gives an amazing and detailed feedback on all the coursework. Be prepared to work in group and on your own startup venture. He also invites interesting speakers - network!
Enjoyed prof. Patrick (a Capstone/exp. on creating a startup) so much, took a 2nd class w him. He has more experience in the real world building things than most academics, & has the hefty slide decks to prove it. He gives you a TON of info, so be sure to pay attention from start to finish. Very transparent on grading; you get out what you put in.
2nd class w/ him, Creating the New Venture. Lectures, slide decks, and working together in class most of your grade. He's serious about no phones/distractions, but you're drinking from a fire hose the whole semester so I get it. Really cares that you're getting it and making progress, so if you're struggling just tell him, he's cool about it.
He has a lot of good information, but I did not like his class presence. He is very passive aggressive and not understanding of people's circumstances so good luck if you ever have personal things come up. I wish I could have taken this class with a different professor.
David Patrick is outdated in marketing. He only had examples from the 90s and early 2000s, and 90% of his experiences were from businesses that went bankrupt. David Patrick also failed to grade any of the over 5 assignments we turned in before spring break until the final 6 weeks of class, while we were turning in more things. Awful professor.
I would give him a 0 if I could but it is not possible. Take anyone else if you can, he is a horrible professor and should not be allowed to teach. He takes months to grade assignments and is unnecessarily harsh when he grades things. He is so boring in his lectures and expects you to "participate" even though most of the time is isn't possible.
If you like to know your class progress during the semester don't take this class, his syllabus stated that all assignments will be graded no later than 2 weeks after their due date but he waited until the last few weeks of the semester to grade any of my work, including him posting the 300 point group project while I was at my graduation ceremony.
The Professor explained the course topics thoroughly. The lectures were open to student participation which allowed students to better understand the concepts. Depth of thought plays a major role when attending this course. Overall, the course was a great experience and I would recommend attending courses Professor Patrick teaches.
With the amount of work that was given, my advice to anyone is to start early and take your time on each assignment. Professor Patrick gives back depth feedback on how to improve your assignment and allows you to do a redo. From this class, I learned how in-depth marketing can get. Especially the really small details that most people don't think of
David has been one of the most insightful professors I've had, he brings real world experiences into his class. This class is for critical thinkers that truly want to learn about applied strategy and its treats you like a working professional. You are expected to make your deliverables and it will disrupt your comfort level.
418 was the most impactful course I've taken, by far - all discussions tied back to strategy and really helped develop my thought process for becoming a marketing thinker. Group projects, guest speakers, lectures, case studies, and assignments all tied back to strategic marketing and branding. Excellent class to prepare you for a marketing career.
Never knew the depth of thought required to effectively develop a retail strategy until this course. Loved the structure where students learn from each other, very interactive and participative (required). Dr. Patrick's passion for retailing and his experience is second to none. Really learned what critical thinking is applied to marketing strategy
I took two classes with Professor Patrick. Both times I did well. If you participate and be a contributor in your groups you will get an A. Make sure to take notes (especially for guest speakers). His lectures are short (which makes more free time) and engaging. Although he give you many assignments you will walk away smarter. His class was 10/10.
This professor deserves a zero, if you can take a different professor do so. You will be waiting the entire semester to get your assignments graded. This is awful since you dont know your final grade until the end of the semester. There are several group projects which are graded very harshly.
Prof. Patrick will challenge you to learn more about business and marketing unlike any of your other professors. I have had the chance to have him as a professor once before. Ultimately, he wants his students to take it to the next level and push themselves to be better marketers. If you're passionate about marketing, you'll love his class.
Professor Patrick is very knowledgeable and provides a significant amount of valuable insight on marketing. His coursework and assignments are reflective of what is expected on the job. However, there could be more structure and organization in his classes. The lectures need to correlate more with the assignment. Overall, he is a great professor!
Professor Patrick is an expert when it comes to providing deep analyses of a company's marketing strategy. He helped change the way I view marketing in retail. Many of his assignments are idealistic to what is seen in the workforce; however, his lectures could be better aligned with assignments to help with the comprehension and output.
If you are a marketing major, TAKE PROFESSOR PATRICK'S COURSES. Yes, the courses are complex and demanding. However, Professor Patrick is not someone who grades for completeness or memorization - rather for strategic analysis and application of your own ideas. Thank goodness for professors like him that make you actually think.
This class w/ Prof. Patrick was an enjoyable yet challenging course. From day 1 he said "it won't be an easy A" and he wasn't kidding. Because of the condensed schedule, there was weekly work from week 1 that needed to be done to complete both individual/group projects on time. That said, I learned a lot from this course and would highly recommend.
Professor Patrick is a master of marketing. Each assignment is a test of your understanding of the class and your understanding of Professor Patrick's marketing ideas. Although challenging, the lecture is fun and impressive, the feedback on assignments is very detailed and targeted, you can receive the reply soon, the ideas in the course are new.
MKT 324 is my favorite class that I have taken at UMKC to date. Prof. Patrick is outstanding and created a class that is unlike the forgettable majority of classes. It is hard to be unsuccessful in this class when the expectations are clearly outlined in an assignment packet. If you do what is asked, you will gain so much from taking it.
A hidden gem in my MBA program. Take this graduate capstone class from him to learn from someone with REAL WORLD EXPERIENCE who is ready to share knowledge. Available as needed and ready to discuss current events or additional material. Dig deep, develop your C-Suite voice, and pay attention to syllabusyou will grow in your critical thinking!
Took in summer 2021. Class was fast paced with a lot of reading and 5 or so papers. At first I thought this class was going to be horrible.. but as time went on and I started understanding more and more from lectures/reading I slowely became ot enjoy it. The papers let me demonstrate my understandings. Very fair grader. Turned out to enjoy theClass
Professor Patrick was a fantastic professor to have for my first marketing class! He had a lot of real world experiences in marketing and was able to use that as helpful examples throughout the course. He gave in-depth feedback on assignments that allows you to improve your thinking and makes you think deeper into the topics! I would recommend!
I took Professor Patrick's class in the summer. It was intense to say the least. Might have been one of the most challenging classes I have taken in my entire college career (both undergrad and grad). The class challenged my organizational skills and study habits. Professor Patrick was inclusive and thorough with his lectures.
I took the strategic management class MGT 5514 with professor Dave over the summer. He is a great professor with a lot of solid experience in the field. This class is not a do the minimum get an A. NOOO! You have to work for your grade. I learned a lot in this class but also had to put ithe effort to get a good grade. I recommend professor Dave.
This class is not like the other college classes. This class is not a read, study, and regurgitate the same information on the test. This class takes authentic work and ideas. Be ready to work hard to get a good grade. He is very knowledgeable in all topics and expects a CMO level of work ethic in his class. Great class, if willing to learn.
Never had a professor give as thoughtful feedback on assignments. Classwork includes activities for success outside of class as well. Excellent experience.
I can honestly say I learned more "real world" marketing tools in this course than any other marketing classes I have taken. Professor Patrick does a great job of sharing his professional marketing tools within the class. I feel more confident going into my marketing career taking this course. It is a lot of work and not an easy A but worth taking!
David Patrick has a distinct teaching style I really appreciated. His assignments are very open ended and allow students to take charge and create something that truly reflects their marketing style which is great for post-grad portfolios. He gives detailed feedback and as long as you have attention to detail and listening skills, you'll do great.
David Patrick is an an excellent professor if you want to learn about the business in the real world. Every lesson plan came with an example from his own personal experience. I enjoyed his teaching style and how all our textbook was used to inspire personal growth. I would 100% suggest taking one of his classes.
Professor Patrick is the second worst professor I've ever had. He never appeared to be prepared for class, and often did not explain assignments correctly. On more than one occasion the entire class completed a project "incorrectly" and blamed us for not listening. He never knew what he had already covered. I got absolutely nothing from this class.
David is a great professor with an abundance of knowledge and experience. His class pushes you to think deeply and gain knowledge that you can apply in the real world. You will miss a lot if you don't attend class and it will make the projects much harder on you. You will learn a lot and get a good grade if you're willing to work for it.
Prof. Patrick is a difficult teacher but offers important lessons about the professional world. He taught numerous prescriptive tools that I use and will continue to use in my marketing career. I recommend taking this class, but it's not a fluff course though it has a lot of tangible value. It's 100% group work but you can shine on your own, too.
This class taught insightful information that I will implement with my upcoming endeavors. You get what you put in this class- whoever takes this course has to put in the time and the work. Throughout my time taking Professor Patrick's courses, I have learned extremely valuable information that any business student would be fortunate to learn.
I had professor Patrick for MGT 301 which is a business communication class. He will push you out of your comfort zone and participation is key to your grade. He has a lot of real world experience that he brings into his lectures. Take his class. He will give you tools that prepare you for life after college.
This class is hard in its own right. You learn a lot, but sometimes it is more teach yourself than professor taught. I will say I think I gained a lot of good knowledge from this course, but it is a hard course to complete.
One of the best real-world classes I have taken! Professor Patricks requires you to think outside the textbook. If you do the work, youll be fine!
Professor Patrick provides meaningful insight from his past experiences in the business world and pushes students to think the same "real world" way. While he makes you work for a good grade, he also provides a substantial amount of extra credit which helps so attend class and participate. Be a group and class leader and you will succeed.
Very knowledgeable about the subject. Has a lot of connections that he often brings in for presentations. Honestly a great chance to learn from actual industry pros. Class has a fair amount of work, but none of it is really that difficult.
While Marketing 435 was probably the most difficult course I had taken, it was also the most I learned from. Professor Patrick knows what he's talking about and has decades of top-level industry experience/connections that he actively uses to relate class work to the real world. This class is by no means easy, but you will be glad you took it.
Prof Patrick was a very unique professor. He really made you think.I think he is a prof every college student should have at least once. You will appreciate him in the end. His class is not a typical class that has assignments due every week but rather every now& then but the assignments are meaningful and every class should be structured as such.
Professor Patrick is one of the best professors I have had so far. His course ENT 462 is a unique teaching process that gives students real world experience. Patrick makes you work for your grade, pushes you out of your comfort zone, and requires participation. In the end, you will appreciate that. Great opportunity for growth!
UMKC doesn't have a capstone class per se, but this class has that feel. It requires you to draw on the analytical skills we built in the program to make strategy recommendations. Challenging work but rewarding. Prof. Patrick is not the most charismatic lecturer, but he knows his stuff. If you show up to class and engage, you will learn a lot.
He will grade rigorously and be an extreme hardass all the time in class. Didnt grade anything until 2 weeks before the final but still expected us to use his feedback (that we never really got) on the one remaining project that we had mostly finished by this point. He tries to intimidate his students and acts as if hes God's greatest gift to Earth
This class is one of the most overwhelming classes I have taken at UMKC and Prof Patrick does not make it any better. So much going on, but not anything you actually learn from. Uses examples of things he worked on from 70s-80s, did not know my grade in the class until 2 weeks before final. Grades are determined by how he views your participation.
As long as you show up to class and participate, he is a great professor. If you don't do anything for this class, that will truly reflect your grade. I loved this class and learned a lot from it cause I participated. If you are looking to just get by and not do anything, this class isn't for you. Negative reviews are from students who didn't try.
Professor Patrick has amazing experience and insight for anyone with a future career in marketing. Without a doubt, I learned more in this class and made more connections than in any other class I have taken. Our individual and group projects take time and are challenging but very rewarding. The case studies brought to class are very interesting.
Professor Patrick goes above and beyond as a teacher. He is not a read memorize test professor. But focuses on learning basic concepts and using them in real life examples. We had a year long project centered on building a strategy for one company. Professor Patrick is an expert in marketing and business strategy, I would recommend him to anyone.
Professor Patrick has a unique teaching style that pushes you to think in ways you probably haven't before in a classroom setting. This class is application based and will provide you with real world skills and experiences if you choose to take advantage of them. If you don't go to class you will struggle to contribute to the final project.
Professor Patrick applies an unconventional approach to instructing in the world of academia, but it forced me to think independently and go outside my comfort zone to become a skilled, focused, and efficient marketer. The group projects are helpful/give the opportunity to focus on professional world applications and collaboration. Would recommend.
This course is not structured around memorize, test, and forget. Real world application through case studies, group work, and individual projects are utilized. Depth of thought is rewarded. Certain perspectives you have will certainly change, as you learn new concepts, principals, ideas and behaviors. This is not your blowoff class. (MKT465&418)
Professor Patrick's class was one of my favorite classes at the University of Kansas. His teaching style allows students to display leadership, think critically, and learn how to develop a brand strategy from scratch. The class is a challenge, but many of the concepts I learned from his real world knowledge are relevant to my Marketing career now.
This was one of the most advanced courses I have taken at UMKC. Patrick taught me a ton about real marketing & a career in it by being realistic and having guest speakers. He is very well established! This class is public speaking, reading, group work, and participation-based. I would highly recommend this class & professor because I learned a lot.
David Patrick is a professor you want to have. He is challenging but encourages depth of thought from you. He allowed me to push myself beyond surface-level marketing, and tap into true strategy. The class is not easy, but if you participate and put the time/effort into it, you will reap the benefits. Best class I have taken, hands down.
Prof Patrick's course was the most challenging, yet most rewarding course I have taken at UMKC that will leave you with valuable skills applicable to any career of choice. The readings, case studies, discussions, and assignments allow you to apply your skills to real life marketing problems. Do the work and you will have no trouble getting an A.
I'm not one to typically post these so, hear me out. Prof Patrick is absolutely the most influential professor I had while attending UMKC. I accredit his lectures with my immediate success in finding a job. He goes beyond lectures so you actually learn why something is important and trust me, it sticks. Take his courses and you'll be better for it.
Prof. Patricks class was very insightful. You can tell he is passionate about what he teaches and is experienced in Marketing. The assignments in this class will teach you to apply what you learned. This class was challenging yet extremely REWARDING because I was pushed to think deeper. I recommend this class to anyone interested in marketing.
Prof. Patrick does a great job with this course! Lectures/work are asynchronous, which can be tough if you're busy or have a hard time motivating yourself, but the quality of material is excellent. If you take the time and put in the effort, you can come out of the class really knowing how to read, think about, and apply concepts of marketing.
I really enjoyed my time in this course. It is extremely challenging, but the knowledge you obtain from this course is worth it. This class prepares you for real world situations and pushes you out of your comfort zone. I truly believe I am a better student now because I took this course.
I think professor Patrick's class is well worth taking. The lectures and assignments are asynchronous for the summer course, which means we can learn at our own pace. The professor will not only teach a lot of marketing strategies in this class but will also use many cases to give us a deeper understanding.
I love this class and professor! He has great experience in strategic thinking/marketing! I felt like this class was finally helping me put all the business knowledge together! I took this course in the summer, 8 weeks, so there was a lot of information and work. However, there are many extra credit options for attendance! Group work and reading!
This was a challenging but very beneficial class. Professor Patrick is a great professor, he encourages depth of thought and has an approach to teaching that applies concepts learned to real-life examples, case studies, and projects that allow you to expand your thoughts. I recommend his classes as my marketing mindset has grown substantially.
This Professor gives a lot of real life situations that you can relate too. I find it really helpful when professors do this. He seems to really love the subject he is teaching and when professors have this kind of passion for the class their teaching it makes it much easier for a student.
This is not like any other professor you've taken let me start there. By far the best teacher i might have had my whole life because Professor David teaches based on how you would actually work in real life working in marketing. He pushes you to think deeper and not just give surface-level answers. Watch his lectures and your good.
He is a good professor, and I got a bunch of things from him. He is really helpful, all his homework and exam are from his lecture. The lecture is a little bit heavy because he told us so many things. This is an awesome class, would take it again!
He assigns so many group and individual projects for this class throughout the semester. It is nearing the end of the semester and he has not inputted any grades for two months. Wants us to do the checkpoints on our projects, but has not given us any feedback at all, so we do not know how we did on the last checkpoint.
Class wasn't hard, but he basically talked about himself every lecture. He takes forever to grade assignments so you never really know what your grade is.
Very knowledgeable with many years experience in sales and marketing and it shows in his lectures. Is very clear with expectations and fair with feedback. However, he has been taking an unacceptable amount of time grading assignments this semester. Students are left in the dark about where they stand in the class even after taking the final exam.
Professor Patrick class is very beneficial. Attendance is not mandatory. However, if a class is missed, it could definitely impact your group projects and individual assignments. This is not a class you can skate by with you actually have to read the book and do the assignments to get a good grade and get the takeaway from the course.
Very knowledgeable and passionate about course material, only complaint is feedback from assignments came too late to be used on later assignments, although the professor said they would be available.
If you take a class with professor Patrick, be ready to finish the semester as a better person, writer, and speaker. It will change how you view the business world and every day life. The goal of this class isn't to stump you and make you study useless material. The goal is for you to grow as a person and develop useful and meaningful skills. 10/10
He a tough teacher and although it is a hard class. It is meant to push you, he prepares you for the business world. Part of the reason why his class is tough is because he cares for his students. He strives to better you to be a more confident person, and understand how to create and keep connections. Take this class if u want to b set for success
He takes a long time to get feedback and grades back to you, but he takes the time give quality feedback. Definitely a class where you learn more to analyze companies and come up with your own original takes and suggestion than digesting information and barfing it back up into papers and group presentations.
This course and professor will push you out of your comfort zone, you will grow as a person, a student and a communicator. There is a lot of work in the course but along as you keep up with it, you should be fine. A great professor with a lot to teach you!
If you utilize the skills from this course a lot of things can enhance your life. Everything is taught with the intention to better you for your future. There will be a lot of conversations and opportunities for you to network and learn more than you may be expecting. The assignments are you applying what you learn to your life.
This class was very rewarding. You learn a lot of life/career skills. There are many presentations but they benefit you in the end. Stay on top of your assignments and you will excel in this class.
I've taken many of Professor Patrick's courses and honestly speaking, if you don't like to participate, take notes, and apply what you've learned, then this course is not for you. There aren't many test, but rather group presentations that require you to go beyond the "What". If you apply yourself 100% then your grade will reflect your effort!
The most rewarding class I've taken as of yet. You don't just memorize lectures and notes, you apply the information. He wants you to critically and strategically think, problem solve and ALWAYS bring your prepared self. Lots of group projects, participation and attendance is mandatory. Being prepared is a must. Tough but very rewarding class!!
I took this class during the summer. Professor Patrick is excellent at what he does and helped me learn things that I've applied to both my professional and personal endeavors. However, I will say that you get out of this class what you put into it.
This was the most beneficial class I have ever taken. He tests your ability to think deeply about many different topics and cases. With projects, books, and articles to stay on top of, you have your work cut out for you. If you apply yourself, It all pays off in the end. Professor Patrick is a great teacher who if clearly very knowledgeable!
This was the best management class I have taken at UMKC. The content was very interesting and the lectures were real life examples told by the professor. This class is one in which you need to put in effort and create quality work. Come into class everyday ready to learn, discuss readings, and ask questions and you'll be set.
While there were a few things Professor Patrick could improve upon with better organization and quicker feedback, I overall really enjoyed this class and left a lot smarter. He really teaches you how to think Strategically and have a unique approach to business. I really enjoyed his use of Malcolm Gladwells book in his class. Overall positive!
Dave creates a classroom experience that will leave you more knowledgble and inspired. Everyday is a treasure trove of CEO level insights, proffesional networking, teamwork, business strategy, marketing, and mindset.
MKT418 not only gives students the opportunity to learn from Professor Patrick's real-world expertise but also the chance to apply it during various activities and projects. It's a tough course but I'd recommend it to those with curious minds who are eager to learn through an application-based approach rather than one focused on memorization.
Good teacher with many years of real world experience that he covers in his lectures. However, weekly lectures were rarely posted on time. He also takes an absurdly long time to grade and give feedback on major assignments. Two major assignments were still ungraded after the final exam was due, so you have no idea how you are doing in the class.
Professor Patrick is a great professor who has a lot of knowledge on marketing and all things business he passes on to his students. He gives honest and detailed feedback on all assignments, all of which are more hands on project based than tests (something I personally preferred.) Hard work pays off in this class.
Professor Patrick made it clear from the beginning what was needed to be successful in his course. While he grades more on the tougher side, he gives clear rubrics and guidelines and provides constructive feedback when giving back grades.
MGT301 is project/presentation heavy and group work heavy. You get out of this class what you put into it. IMO, this class was not 'an easy A.' Apply yourself, pay attention, do your assignments, ask questions and you will do well. This class will prepare you for interviews, job searches, and your career. You will get credit for being at lectures.
I learned more from this one class than I did in all of my other classes combined. Professor Patrick takes a different approach than most professors and while the assignments are difficult at times, I actually learned and remember everything from this class unlike the others. As long as you attend class and listen you'll really enjoy this class.
He is an extremely smart man with a lot of valuable insights yet the amount of work we were expected to do was unreasonable for a 3 credit-hour class. The take-home exams were dense and took me multiple days to finish. I believe this class made me prepared for the future but I don't know if it was worth the stress.
Weekly workload can be heavy but assignment packets are very detailed on what the professor is looking for. Semester-long group project is required. Attendance is mandatory as notes come from lectures, not slides. Extra credit is available multiple times throughout the semester. Be prepared as this is not a "read-memorize-test" course.
Professor Patrick's class was extremely informative. A large part of your grade is participation and how much you put into the class, but that holds you accountable for actually learning and not skating through. I learned more from this class than any other class I've taken & believe that I'll be able to effectively use these skills in my career.
Prof. Patrick is a very knowledgeable and experienced professor that will help you master the art of strategic thinking, in his class he pushes his students to think in a strategic way, putting in front of them real-world problems, which end up with a very enriching case study that will allow you to work with a Kansas City Company
A great professor that I would take a class from again. I will say that this isn't an easy class that can be taken lightly. The class is the perfect challenge level and you will learn a ton if you apply yourself.
David Patrick was, by far, my favorite professor while attending UMKC. He shows genuine care and dedication towards his students. Every lecture was interesting, with tons of personal experiences peppered in. Be prepared to speak regularly, as participation is critical in his class. (He is also very funny)
He will make you think for yourself. Professor Patrick is very business savvy and teaches strategic concepts through examples and experience. You will get out of the course what you put into it.
This class is incredibly well structured and allows for the student to come up with their own ideas. Much like any other challenging class, you will get out what you put in, and this is a course that will serve you well later in your career. Make sure you read the materials to engage in class conversation, otherwise you will look like a fool.
This professor doesn't teach bullet points to be forgotten. He teaches ideas and concepts that are applicable and relatable.
to succeed in this class, you need to participate. Everything you learn will be through what you do. Presentations were mostly verbal, with no note-taking, but you must be there to absorb the information. Everything he talked about was applied in presentations, and on the exam. there was a textbook he sometimes referred to, i never used it
Professor Patrick's class is a great challenge that pushes you to think strategically. The workload is heavy, but the real-world case studies and professor insights make it worthwhile. Unstuckstudy was a lifesaver for test prep alongside the textbook.
Genuinely one of my favorite professors. If you want to zone out or have an easy class do not take this class. If you want to be better at public speaking and preparing for the professional world you need to have professor Patrick as a professor. Takes a while to grade but you have an idea of your grade.
As long as you participate, put effort into understanding his practices, it's a great course and he's a great professor.
You will get out what you put in. Not a hard class in the sense of study, memorize, test; but "hard" in the sense that you have to be engaged, participate, and put good thought into your work. The plus side of this class is you will get to develop real, practical skills and get valuable, professional feedback on your work. Really enjoyed the prof.
Professor Patrick's teaching style focuses on critical thinking and real-world application. He really pushes you to think deeper and approach problems creatively. The class is challenging, but fair. He values engagement, and if you're willing to be an active participant and do the work, you'll have no trouble passing.
Professor Patrick's teaching style is the most effective when you're prepared. Lack of understanding and preparation in this course results in missed points, and an inability to successfully connect the dots. Comparatively, if you read the text ahead of time, watch the video lectures, and manage your time well, you are sure to pass this course.
This class was difficult at first, but towards the end, it made me a better strategic thinker. Professor Patrick teaches in a way that gets you thinking outside the box. The group projects showed me how a business fails and how they could have improved . This was honestly one of my favorite classes simply because I learned something valuable.
Professor Patrick has some of the most engaging lectures of any professor I've ever had. I would not take this class online. The class is primarily made up of one long group project and 2 take home tests. If you come to class prepared and ready to participate, you will pass. I learned more in this class than most others. Highly recommend this class
In this course Professor Patrick puts high emphasis on participation, especially during class where he could call on you (preparation is critical). He prepares you well with his own story that in my experience was very inspiring and applicable to a lot of business careers. Overall, If you participate and put effort, you'll do great and learn a lot!
Professor Patrick is a very knowledgeable in the marketing field. His assignments are difficult and time consuming but you are getting hands on training on how to be a strategic thinker. I would encourage you to be prepared when you come to class, take notes, be involved, and do the extra credit he offers. Work hard on assignments.
Teaching style favors critical thinking and emphasizes true understanding of the course material. He has a lot of significant and helpful insight both for the class itself and career development.
This course builds real-world skills through challenging group work. Professor Patrick's genuine care and strategic approach, along with many great guest speakers, creates an environment that sets you up for success and it is truly a great a challenge.
David Patrick was by far the best teacher of my college experience! He does not follow the "read-memorize-test-forget" model and is so eager to make sure each student learns! His class was tough but it was the one of the first classes I actually learned and retained the information given in the course curriculum! I would highly recommend!
Professor Patrick is a strategy professional. As a professor, integrating relevant industry standards and personal business acumen into His teaching. In such a rapidly changing world, versatility is important, and I felt Professor Patrick's Strategic Management course was a great choice in expanding my personal and business skills.
Professor Patrick is a great professor that is always challenging his students to think outside of the box and be more strategic thinkers. I learned so many valuable lessons from his class that I find myself looking back on frequently. If you come to class prepared and do the work you will receive a good grade in this class. Highly recommend!
Professor Patrick's class was one of the most rewarding academic experiences I've had. The course was challenging but focused on real-world application and deep understanding. I learn a lot not only about strategy but how to think critically and edit my work to create a better final product. Highly recommend this course!
Honestly if you participate and try you will do fine. Most of the class never showed up or would come extremely late. You are rewarded for showing up on time and showing that you've done work outside class. I hate writing and reading. Initially I almost dropped the class. But I just gave it my best effort hoping for a C and got an A.
Any class with Professor Patrick is a challenge. He expects you to learn, understand, and be able to talk about every assignment he assigns in class on command. That being said, I took two classes with him and received above an A+ in both. Show up to class (100% of the time), communicate with your teammates, and know the material! You've got this!!
Unlike most classes, test and forget, the professor focuses on having students apply strategic concepts repeatedly to ensure understanding of material. The two take-home tests are very long, but easy if you attend class and read the material. Group projects are HEAVILY weighted, so contribute and assign roles early. PARTICIPATION is key!
Prof Patrick knows marketing and has good stories, but the course is taught as a higher-level strategic marketing course, not an intro. You will retain info learned very well. Tons of projects, which are quite difficult. 2 large tests. Extra credit is plentiful. He uses email over canvas. Textbook is not used. Must be a priority course if taken.
My favorite/final class of undergrad. Professor Patrick has a wealth of knowledge he shares via case studies, both personal and curated. He emphasizes his class is not memorize, test, forget - lives up to his claim. Through lectures, reading and projects (often group) he pushes students to internalize material and learn real world strategy skills.
Mr. Patrick cares most about 2 things: depth of thinking & application of concepts. Chat GPT won't help you here so don't take his classes if you're not prepared to use your brain. Here are some don'ts: Don't be afraid to engage & ask questions. Don't get behind. Don't come to class unprepared. He's a great professor so learn as much as you can!
