Nice and very clear about what he teaches
Really tall old guy who is really interested in biology. The tests are confusing, but there's lots of extra credit so it's not too hard.
Nice guy, tells a lot of stories in class. Makes biology actualy interesting. Tests can be kind of confusing, so def go to reviews and ask lots of questions.
Class is very boring, tests are hard and wordy. Lab is ok. Plan to be bored in this class.
Sucks test are horrible at least 50% fail
Had the 2nd highest lab grade in the class but failed 2 exams and got C's on the other 2. Why? Because the exams come from hell and are full of trick questions! I somehow pulled a B for the class but the test structure was absurd. Take BIO with someone else. He's a decent teacher but the tests suck.
BORING!!!....ZZZZZZZZZ
He is extremely boring but very interested in Bio. Hardest tests ever though, filled with trick questions. somehow i pulled a B but it def took work.
I warmed up to Dr. Pearson after a few classes. He's really into conservation biology. He tells very fascinating stories about his many trips to different countries. A very worldly guy. I'd recomend this teacher to anyone who has a genuine intrest in life sciences.
Better than Lawson, but not by uch. Semi-interesting lecture, offers maybe two 5pt. extra credit at the end of the semester. Tests are STILL tricky, EVEN if you go to the review. But get this-- no review for a culmiative final??!! Try to take a different lab science! BIO 100 sucks!
Dr. Pearson is a good teacher. His lectures are interesting-- which is hard to do in a big lecture class. He brings in real life examples. His tests are hard in that you have to think and not necessarily memorize. He's very helpful when you come to office hours, though. His extra credit is helpful.
dull... tests were almost impossible but he did allow you to use a note sheet. Managed a B in lab but Ds and an F on 3 tests and a C+ on the final. no review for final.
This guy wasn't too bad, his pictures on his power points were pretty intersting. He's led an fascinating life, so he's got some good stories. But he did put me to sleep a couple of times. You can't really study for his tests, the best way to pass is is to go to class. Dpn't waste ur $ on the book.
Pearson has interesting powerpoint pictures but his tests are a lot harder than Lawson's because you can't really study for them, it's all reasoning and picking the best answer
Pearson has great stories, which help keep the class from being boring. Tests are all lecture, no book, and the questions are things that are maybe only covered verbally in class - i.e. not in the powerpoint notes that he posts online. The tests are definitely harder than they should be, so do the extra credit when he offers it.

Very interesting guy with interesting stories! He has tough tests and expects a lot. NOT LENIENT AT ALL on HW.

He teaches better than Elser! I like the way he teaches! For me taken the course over again this semester he makes things so much clearer and interesting even though I hate BIOLOGY!!!
Take biology 101 with anyone else, but him. He is so boring and his test question are impossible to anwser with the information in the presented in class and the book. In my five years at Asu I never got less than an A except in his class I bearly sqeaked by with a B. I went to his office hours, never missed a class or a lab and read the book, and yet I could get better than a C on the exams. He was not at all helpful in his office, he droned on much like he does in the lectures.
Fun guy to have as a professor. Very interesting. Test wasnt as bad as these people say; go to class and you will do fine. I got a 96% on his test. People who do not go to class miss out on the Extra Credit and that is huge. He is very strict on HW which sucks
As much as I have studied what was presented in class did nothing for me when it came to exams. I've tried, and understood everything, gone to study groups, used all resourced available but exams are from hell and haven't scored anything higher than a low C. Class is interesting, Pearson is an interesting teacher. At times may be a bit boring but he's good nonetheless.
This is an easy class!!!All you have to do is write down the notes he posts on blackboard and write anything extra from the lecture. Tests were piece of cake...no memorizing....just understanding big concepts.
He is one of the greatest guys i have ever known....He helped me get through college...if you ever need a great mentor he is your man!
His lectures are fine to listen to and understanding, but his tests are terrible. A lot of the questions relate to very little he has covered in class. Elser is a much better teacher overall, and he directly relates his lectures onto the tests.
A good guy, he really knows his stuff and has been almost everywhere and has cool stories about the places he has been. All you need to do to succeed is go to class and actually engage in what he is saying. He gives you lots of practice test questions, sets up review sessions, and has office hours; if you utilize these you should have no problem.
The class was easy if you show up and show up to the exam reviews. Allows a page of notes for exams and is helpful on discussion boards. This class gave me a new perspective on a lot of things and was interesting, even though Im nowhere near a bio major.
He is more entertaining than Elser by 3 fold, but his tests are 3 times harder because he doesnt give dood notes, and then the book isn't even remotely similar to what we had talked about. Avoid this class at all costs.
Pearson is an interesting guide, and will let you know about his stories and ventures around the world. However, his exams are really difficult to study for. But suprisingly seem like common sense questions. IF you take this class get the CPS for EX Credit points.
Lectures are fun. But the tests are hard. DO NOT BUY THE BOOK! save your $.
I loved Dr. Pearson, he's one of the nicest teachers I've had. His test are not hard, you just have to go to class and be somewhat interested in the subject matter. He's been everywhere and tells good stories about his life, i would definitly take another class he taught.
This class was okay. He tells good stories. The book is written by a guy at asu and was cheap for a bio book- like $90 instead of $140 like most of my others.
he's such a cute old man!! (and extremely knowledgeable and passionate about bio). i definately recommend his class for a science credit- plus he offer a lot of extra credit!
I thought his teaching style was great. It was like watching the discovery channel.
He is G-d after surving the first half of the semester with Lawson. Interesting and doesn't just read Lawson's textbook out loud. Attending class is a must with daily quizzes and even occasional, but generous number of EC points.
So yes, I'm not majoring in biology and I'm not that interested in this class- but Pearson is f-ing experienced and well rounded with this subject. Made it sooo much more interesting after having****Lawson the first half of the semester. Pearson's tests are intense, lots of reading in questions, but still all objective. Hard class, but great.
Like somebody else in here said, going to this class is exactly like watching the discovery channel, complete with tons of pictures and even a couple videos. Great teacher, much better than Elser. Tests are all common-sense type questions
He made the class interesting and gave extra credit opportunities. :) He also was just very helpful in doing a pre-exam study session which was a big help. It was nice in lecture because he would always give examples of things from his studies in the past. I enjoyed the half of the semester with him a lot and felt I learned quite a bit.
You have to study extremely hard to do well in this class. His lectures are just him rambling, and there are things on the test that he may have touched on for a second and then never mentioned again. You can have a note sheet on the tests but they are on difficult to understand "concepts". His lectures are interesting, but he jumps around and is vague.
Pearson is a very intelligent man, and a pretty good teacher. I like him better than Elser, and I think his lectures are interesting. The information is practical and useful, which I like. My advice is TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE EXTRA CREDIT! And if you have questions, ask him; extremely helpful!
He loves what he does -- never a dull moment -- great teacher. But tests are confusing. Book is no use. The lab is totally different from what you do in the class.
He is great professor.... he's awesome if you go to class and have your CPS your gaurented at least 20 points of extra credit just for going to class.... test are challenging but if you go to class and do the study questions that are online then you will do fine!!! (allows a page worth of notes for each test!!!)
I loved Dr. Pearson! He is full of information and is very passionate about his subject. He is very helpful to those who come to his office hours. One of my favorite profs this year!
go to class, study the example q's they give for the tests, and go to the review sessions...if ur having trouble, go to his or TA's office hours and go over the answers to the example questions and put them on your study guide that u can take to the test...it's cake
Great professor. Extremely interesting and helpful.
This guy was great. He is passionate about his class and work, it shows. One day in class he got goose-bumps because he was so excited about a discussion.
BIO100 is the best class I've taken, it is fun and entertaining, There is no memorization, just logical thinking, He Teaches the class with Dr. Elser, both teachers are good and the labs are not bad. Lots of extra credit, also you do not need the book. TAKE THIS CLASS!
Very nice guy, class is pretty interesting, and he is always willing to help(he practically begs people to come to office hours).
i love this guy! hes intelligent and eloquent. teaches bio very well.
He is a very enthusiastic lecturer, and he has a fantastic sense of humor. I enjoyed going to his classes.
Very fun teacher who is passionate about his subject matter. Talks a bit fast, but it's because he is just excited to share what he loves. He is interested in his students as individuals, even though it's a big class. Just go to his office hours. I would definitely take another class from him.
Very clear when lecturing. He helps students to understand the material. Team taught with Dr. Elser, and I likes Pearson way better. His way of lecturing caches my interest and makes biology more interesting. But go to class to get all the CPS points you can!! And lots of extra credit offered! Do everything, the extra credit and cps will save you!!
I absolutely loved this guy! He was passionate about his work, knowledgable and funny too! Definitely not the easiest class so be sure to get as many CPS E.C. as possible! Tests are extremely hard, critical thinking involved. 25 intense questions and half of the class fails. He talks really fast but try your best to take lots of notes!!
I absolutely loved this guy! He cracks jokes all the time, and he is extremely knowledgeable. You can tell that he's really passionate about what he does. I was never bored during his class. The only thing that sucks is he co-teaches with another professor, so you only get Pearson half the time. TAKE HIM!
Pearson is amazing! I have so much respect for this man. He has seen and done everything that he's teaching, so he knows all of his stuff 1st hand. I am not a Biology or science person at all, so the fact that he made me LOOK FORWARD to coming to his lectures really transformed the way I look at the subject. Highly recommend him.
Fabulous professor...very interesting!!
He is a nice guy, very well traveled. Much more interesting than Lawson (who teaches the first half). The class was BS because it wasn't over introductory biology, it was over "critical thinking", which is very subjective. The tests were a nightmare. The class coordinator is not very nice. Take something else!!
Even though he knows what he is talking about from first-hand experiences, the class was a waste of time. His tests were "choose the best answer" and irrelevant.I had an A in lecture, and I thought I did really well on the final, but the class average was a 46% so my A dropped to a C.STUPID CLASS!It isn't biology, it is a subjective reasoning class!
i love him, sweetest man ever and soo nice. academically very smart but unless you are a biology geek dont take it. is hard and really confusing. i did not learn anything at all. i took another science class and I loved it. his exams are hard and horrible. the TA is not good either....but everyone loves DR. PEARSON!

Pearson was SOO awesome. He made the class interesting and made time go by fast. He gives good advice and extra credit too. He makes good analogies and makes things simpler!
This is class is a joke and so is this professor. Do not take this class. For one, he tries to push this critical thinking nonsense. Biology is not a subjective subject until upper levels. This class is a complete drain on energy and brain cells. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS! It is a completely useless exercise of idiocy and I'm sorry I took it.
Honestly, this was the easiest class I have ever taken. The guy makes lectures interesting and unless you are incompetent you can easily eliminate all wrong answers on the test even though it is supposedly "subjective". Take this class, very easy science. Extra credit every single day via CPS.
Such a great teacher, you don't even need the book! (Seriously, don't buy it. It's a waste of money)
He is not the most interesting teacher but he teaches very well. Print notes ahead of time are VERY HELPFUL in needing to know whats important. His test are fair but for study guides, they are hard and may require you to seek help for answers because their not given to you
An absolute misery of a class. Do not take it. This professor, who may be competent outside of lecture, is boring and a total waste. Tests that are incomprehensible. Study guides that do not assist in studying are the norm for this guy. If at all possible, do not take.
Lame. Why you ask? That's an excellent test question. That is the kind of "professing" you can expect from this guy. He rambles on and on about his various adventures abroad and leaves you with absolutely no BIO info, but tests you on it anyways. Lame
I can not believe this guy has tenure. He is incompetent and his class is horrible. Do not take if you want to keep your sanity and dignity.
This is a canard. Don't go. This professor is a charlatan of epic proportions.
Dr. Pearson is a very experienced professor. Everything he says he backs up immediately with pictures if him working in the field. This is more of a critical thinking class than a biology class, and if you can think through questions logically (if you can hold your own on any AP tests) then you have nothing to worry about. Attend lecture!
This class was made way too hard for the 100 level. He tried to teach critical thinking but many test questions would be much easier if you were an expert in biology.
The kids in this class, like most at ASU, are idiots. If you took biology in high school, this will be a breeze. Lectures cover basics like "biomes" and "genetics." It's a joke. Take lots of notes. Pearson is much funnier than Elser. Study guides are provided for the test - use them and DO NOT waste your money on the book.
Class was way too hard. Didnt understand it at all. Hes a nice guy overall though, but the material he covered was just too complicated. Exams are extremely complicated. Mostly based on long, word problems.
If you are taking bio just for a science, stay away from this guy. He actually wants you to learn this stuff and apply it to your life even if your a journalism major. The class is more about thinking critically and discussing paradoxes than actually learning facts. The test questions are paragraphs rather than questions.
In all honesty, Dr. Pearson is a very intelligent and experienced professor. However, I was virtually unable to prepare for his tests. They are long, complicated, and DIFFICULT. Not a biology class so much as it is a critical thinking class. AND THE LABS BLOW. Don't take it, you have plenty of other sciences to choose from.
Here is my advise to obtain an "A": 1) take his study guide to his office and ask him any questions you have. During the conservation you will almost see all questions on the test. 2) Obtain all points in Lab if you can. Lab is easy and it is no way to loss points. 3) Take CPS with you as you can earn up to 50 points from class.
Dr. Pearson is an excellent instructor, and willing to help anyone who takes the time to go to his office hours. If you cannot pass his course, then you do NOT belong in college. If you think BIO 100 is difficult, then go back to high school, as you obviously learned nothing there.
This teacher is all about the lecture. Whatever you do, don't miss his lectures because he doesn't use anything from the book. Make sure you go to the study session before the test. i made the mistake of not going to the first study session and my grade suffered. Luckily I did well on the final and ended up with an A.
Nice guy and funny. Grade is mostly tests so do well.
He is absolutely hilarious! And regardless of what the other comments say, this class is a breeze! He is so much fun, and you don't have to learn a bunch of random facts. He's super excited about his subject, which makes him entertaining. This class was awful though for the portion taught by another teacher, I had Lawson. AWEFUL! But Pearson rocks!
class is easy. study guide is mainly everything on the test. dont buy the book, you wont use it and its not mandatory. pearson posts notes of all lectures online before class. entertaining.
Best professor ever!!! Really made my first semester the best ever. Best of all you don't need to be good at science to do well in his class. He Rocks!!!
pointless pointless pointless class and professor. nice guy, but really scattered/random lectures. everything he teaches tries to apply some animal he has studied in his lifetime into a biological concept. you leave lectures feeling like you wasted your whole day in coming to class, and tests are nothing like lectures: completely random/irrelevent
I really liked Dr. Pearson. I had done Bio in high school before, so the class was easy to me, but I learned a lot. I didn't use the textbook at all. Also, Pearson's lectures were interesting, and he has real-world experience that he brings to lecture, which makes the topics interesting. Make sure to attend lectures, because they really help.
Excellent teacher. Kept lectures funny, insightful and on point. Used CPS but only for extra credit. Offered other extra credit assignments as well. He may seem to go off on a tangent at times but he always tied it back to his original point. I have no interest in BIO but Prof Pearson did a good job keeping my interest during class!
Really has enthusiasm in what he teaches. It is still a boring subject but he makes it more interesting.
Him and Lawson are awesome. This class is easy if you're able to think critically. Labs are very interesting. A++++ class.
Nice guy. you need to think like him in order to pass the class. I don't recommend him. His lectures were interesting but didn't match with the exams. Don't buy the book if he's only teaching the class.
HARD, HARD class.
I got a B. Pearson was more electrifying and interesting. Exams based on lecture, book, and some common deduction. Caused me to think about science, math, and philosophy systems. they have differences. -Bads: didn't like exams, cramped exam rooms, students reaking like smoke or being disruptive. Easy to get a B but not an A due to a very biased TA.
Do not take him if you're just looking for a science credit!! Exams are impossible to study for and are all critical thinking. Nearly half the class fails the first one. The book is completely useless,he teaches at a pace in which he thinks everyone has a ton of background knowledge on the subject and his notes are just a small piece of the puzzle.
Its an interesting class, but the exams are really confusing.
I'm a junior in the business school. I like this class a lot. In the lab, we get to play with bugs, play with squid-ovaries, and draw animal skulls. I recommend BIO 100. It's super fun.
He is a great teacher with a lot of enthusiasm for the subject. He likes to always find the connection between real life and how we can apply the material to whatever field we choose (even Business Majors), which keeps it interesting. Lots of fun facts too. A flat-out great teacher.
Passionate about his subject. Talking about Tiger Beetles is...zzzz.... what? Test? Tests are sort of difficult, but not if you pay attention, go to class (listen) and do his study guide. The most important part of the class is the lab. People with a good TA like this class more than those that don't have a good TA. Recommended, but find a good TA.
Best Teacher! But exams are really hard because the study guides he makes do not follow the exam. tests are hard just pay attention to the lectures and TP questions
Its harder than you think for 100 level class, it is all about critical thinking. but he never shows you how he expects you to get the answers. People are struggling in the class. Teachers change half way during the class. Study all your notes, not just the study guide. If you have a good Lab TA then it helps. Do all the extra credit offered.
Dr. Pearson makes his lectures easy to sit through and he delivers the information with a lot of clarity. I enjoyed this class while he was teaching it, but he left in the middle and the new Professor is NOT interesting!! Go to lecture, use Dr. Pearsons notes he puts on blackboard, study with a group, go to review sessions, do good in lab
Terrible professor, terrible class.
As a teacher, I found him really interesting, and thought he did a good job. As long as you study the study guides, and attend class the majority of the time, you can do pretty well. With him it's all about the concepts, so make sure you go to the review sessions and meet up with other students to make sure you understand them.
Fun professor! Lectures are easy to sit through when he's talking, and the exams are all critical thinking but not too difficult. People struggle because they expect to be spoonfed everything, but its interesting... until the second professor takes over the class midway. She's awful but her info is all middle school review so not tough
Interesting class but very har professor. Should be a 200 or 300 level class. The best advice is go to the test reviews! and do all the extra credit offered. Do not see him during office hours if you can help it hes very rude and tends to act like you dont know anything.
Professor was a nice person but the class was a bit tough. It required alot of outside reading and studying. He really expected you to know your stuff and commit alot of time to the class. It is a 400 level course so I guess that's expected. His style of examinations were a bit different and I felt that he didn't give enough time.Would not take again.
How could a 100 level course be so damn difficult? NO curve, everyone struggled! I am an A student and got B's and C's on his tests. Nothing from the study guide is on the tests!! You have to select the "best answer" out of a list of answers that all seem correct! His voice is so monotone I cant understand him whatsoever! Do not take this teacher!!
Dr. Pearson is brilliant in biology. He is extremely qualified. If you study the notes he provides, attend lecture, read the assigned articles, and actually prepare a little for the exams, you'll do fine. He doesn't expect you to memorize biology, just to be familiar enough with the concepts to be able to logically deduce the answer on the exams.
People are completely overreacting to the difficulty of this course. The tests were far from impossible (I got 100s on two of them). His material is generally easier to grasp than Hamilton's, but his lectures can also get a bit boring. He seems like a nice guy, though, and seems to take a great interest in Biology.
This class is a big joke. The assignments has almost nothing to do with the tests. I regret taking this class. Do not take it unless critical thinking is your passion. His slides are too fast and thinks we are already experts in this course when we first enter.
Pearson is a boring lecturer to listen to, and the subject sucks, but the class satisfies an SQ. The class really isn't that hard, but for a 100 level, they do expect a lot from you. Clicker questions are worth enough points that you need to go to class. All in all, this class isn't terrible, but it's not great either.
He loves "critical thinking", which he mentions about 1,000 times through-out the class. Very interesting perception of biology. He was a nice, and made slightly funny comments during class. Class is basically mandatory because of clicker points. Not impossible, but wouldn't recommend for a 100 level elective (like I took it as).
Dr. Pearson is a wonderful professor. He is enthusiastic about his field, the field trips are a blast, and he makes subtle jokes that are quite funny if you pay attention. He is tough about grading because it is an UD class, but once you get the hang of it, his exams are easy! Exams are all about thinking like a biologist not just memorization!
Like doing long labs that are irrelevant to the test? Like a huge workload? Like extremely hard tests? Then this is the class for you. Conclusion: extremely hard and time consuming for a 100 class.
He's an entertaining old dude. Attendance isn't mandatory but he almost always has extra credit opportunities for students in attendance. There's a fair amount of homework but none of it is very difficult. If you show up to class and participate in the lecture and exam reviews you shouldn't have to spend much time studying at all.
The typical BIO 100 course. He is very passionate about his work and speaks so many languages! Very smart man. Participate and show up! Even out of a 100 person class, he notices your absence! 4 exams and a final. Even if you bomb the tests, there are many bonus points available, just show up.
It's always refreshing to have a passionate and dedicated professor, which Pearson definitely is. While lectures aren't very relevant to test material, they are usually interesting and class is worth attending for extra credit points. Quite a bit of easy but time consuming homework and labs. Overall, this class is worth it to take to get your SQ
Class was very educational and the teacher taught about real world applications of biology. He lectured on controversial topics and presented both sided to arguments allowing students to choose for themselves. Most of the homework was short papers and labs and the labs could be time consuming. For tests go to SI and you will get an A.
