This professor has been the best professor I have ever had at UTM. His lectures are so clear, he's very nice and approachable, and he doesn't make you feel like an idiot if you don't understand the concepts. His tests are multiple choice, there is no exam, and the chapter questions are straightforward. Just make sure you pay attention in class!
I hate math. This is my second time in this class. It is sooooo much better now. He is really good at explaining stuff and I actually feel like I am understanding.
Hate stats but loved this stats course. I actually understood something and feel like I can use some of what I learned outside of school. Never would have thought that. You don't have to read the book but missing class probably will mean you get a bad grade. You still need the book for assignments though.
Good class. Not hard if you do the work and go to class. Don't skip tutorials !
Best prof I've had at UTM no doubt. Made lectures fun, great guy, passionate, always willing to help. Just make sure you read the main text, and participate whenever you're getting marked for it. Good class average compared to other courses, so do not worry! If you have a class with this prof, consider it a blessing lol
One of the best professors at the University of Toronto Mississauga arguably the best in the Department of Sociology. You would not want any other professors to teach you statistics course (Sociology based) but this guy. He's simply hands down the best. He is a blessing to non-mathematical students. He's helpful, quick with emails and is engaging.
This is the first class I am taking in policy. the class overall is good with a good background in sociology for understanding how policy works. Lots of readings though (but they are not hard). Class is 50% exams and 50% writing assignments which is a good balance. I learned a lot from doing the writing assignments about my city and social problems
Never thought I'd say this about a stats course but this class rocks. I got think about my own topic and use technques i never knew before. I am just so excited about doing research now.
For a none math student such as myself David is the best Professor. He is very good at making stats enjoyable and easy to understand. I feared this class at the begining of the semester but there's nothing to fear if he's teaching the class.
I was really freaked out about statistics at the beginning of the term but this class was one of my favourite classes this term thanks to Prof. Pettinicchio.
Pettinicchio is a very good prof. Patient, explains the concepts well, and is always available for his students. Statistics was not easy for me but if you go to lectures and do the work you'll do fine. The best part is you can ask him anything and he always makes sure you understand the explanation before moving on. He's also funny!
As a person who hates all forms of math, I genuinely enjoyed taking his class. It was not easy, but it was not a death sentence either. There are 4 labs on SPSS, 3 homework assignments, 1 midterm, and an in-class final exam. If you're taking stats, take it with him. And honestly- you don't REALLY need the textbook - I just used the back tables.
I love this professor!!! Will be taking classes with him in the future for sure. You can tell that he really cares about his students. He explains concepts very well and is patient with students who don't understand certain concepts.
I dreaded statistics so much but David made it so easy for us. His lectures are fantastic and super clear and he gives you lots of grading opportunities so if you bomb one thing you can make it up in other assignments. He was one of the most approachable profs I've ever had!
Prof Pettinicchio really cares about the success of his students. He's quick with emails and the lab preps aren't mandatory but are really helpful for assignments and are pretty straightforward. Definitely one of the better profs I've had at UTM.
best class ever. I want to go to law school and this class was so amazing in thinking about how policies deal with intersectionality between race, gender and disability. You have to be involved because it's not a test based class and you have to really participate and know what you're talking about so don't take this class if you want to hide.
Required for specialists. Im in Crim and at first didn't really get why I needed to be in it. it's like 222 but it seemed way harder. But I really ended up loving it. got a hang of the labs and I loved doing my own project. I feel like I really got knowledge that I can't get from other crim or soc courses. Take it even if you're a major.
seminar so it was him facilitating discussion. Helpful to get more indepth and really I think he makes grading less pressure so you can focus on actually learning a topic. You definitely don't have to talk in class but I think you definitely get rewarded for being engaged. Plus you learn a different style of writing (op-ed) which I found useful
Professor Pettinicchio is a really good prof. He gave us all the tools and files we will need throughout the entire semester so that we can be in complete control of our time management. His tests are based on application of concepts, not just memorization. I normally hate math, but he made it tolerable and even fun. FANTASTIC prof.
the class itself is not hard but the prof sucks. It is easier to learn and teach yourself online than try to understand what he is explaining. Math is not hard and this guy makes it 10 times harder. for each week just teach yourself the materials via youtube or online sources as it will make way more sense than how he explains things.
Require stats course students don't want to take this but have to and honestly it was pretty decent even with all the coronavirus stuff. Prof was one of the first to take class online and it was pretty organized. If you follow the lectures you should do ok. He's good at explaining things. TA's ok but paying attention to lectures is most important
Worst Professor Ive ever had at UTM. He is so rude and disorganized. He claimed several times that our midterm would be multiple choice but when opening it, there were NO multiple choice questions. Hes unnecessarily harsh. Take this course with a different prof if you can. The content isnt hard, the prof just sucks
So obvi covid made this class different all online but it was pretty clear what we had to do and if you don't pay attention and get motivated it won't work. prof did a pretty decent job with having stuff online downloadable and online discussion. Overall not too bad. was much more worried about this class when I registered for it.
this was mostly a mix of pre-recorded short videos and weekly virtual meetings and was really good. I felt like we had a legit seminar. Not a Crim student but took this class because it was about disability and law and it was eye opening especially talking about the current pandemic situation. I would definitely take this prof again.
So glad Munk School made this disability and policy class available and that Pettinicchio is teaching it. Learning a lot in a relaxed environment and I come out of each online class full of ideas. Not bad given the covid circumstance . We need more of this Munk!
day 1 and I want to drop this class, he has an attitude and is quite passive aggressive, there seems to be an unnecessary amount of work, needing to watch narrated lectures on top of attending "webinars" that are not recorded, for whatever reason I'm not sure. anyways, if it wasn't a program requirement I would not be taking this irritating class
Class is good. Thought it would be a disaster but ended up well. If you follow along it's not too bad. He makes all the material for the class available way ahead of time. Overall good class and it's a stats course so never thought I'd say that.
Love this class. We need more of this. Prof is engaging and I felt so into it in the course which is hard to think about now because so much was going with COVID and all. Hard to be actively involved with material but I was really interested and prof. created a really great environment for discussion.
required to take this for specialists. Didn't really want to because I don't think I need this stuff for my career but ended up being really interesting and I think useful in a basic way. I won't be doing any of this kind of stuff but still, found it to be worth it to know about.
hate stats and all things quantitative but this class became really useful for my job now working in social services doing research. I'm not using all of this stuff but definitely have a better sense about what I am reading . I think it's great specialists are required to take it and kudos for the prof for making this class work
stats course what can I say. don't think anyone wants to be there but the class was reasonable. Some students complain and are just annoying and even telling people wrong answers in group chat. prof p would eventually get impatient with non relevant complaining type comments. Most people I know thought the class went well and he did a good job
Honestly, I found this course to be very helpful as a degree requirement but I would not take this course with Pettinicchio. Both on email and in lectures he was very aggressive and not helpful at all. Assignments were pretty easy, but the exams were a bit harder. I suggest taking this course with another professor if its a requirement.
this class was required. I think lots of students in this class checked out and then basically didn't do well. It's not really that hard ( tests are bit hard but questions weren't way out there). I feel like if you put the work in you'll do fine. People get into a mindset of hating the class for no reason. I plan to take Pettinicchio's 350 stats
This was a stats course required for specialists. I wasn't really into it but I liked the course and learned a lot. Also, did way better in this class then the 222 intro to stats course. It was overall useful. You work on your own stuff and no tests
Just not a good prof for sociology students and also not accomodating. He Seems nice but actually not nice and does not take time to answer questions in a way that a student can better understand. Take this course with a different prof if you want to pass it.
just got my mark and I did better than I thought. prof does a review of final test and it is really helpful. did way better on final than midterm. in the end the class wasn't bad. if you lose track you're going to find it hard to get back into it. answers emails fast and will answer if Ta doesn't. I had way worse soc courses this term
The class was ok. I hate stats but the guy did his thing. Clear lectures, accessible content from online. I think a lot of students just check out . some people can get it without help others can't. Can't really complain. I feel like my mark was fair.
Better than I thought . Some people prolly thought they'd do fine not going to "class". I can't learn without lectures and prof's were great. I think he needs to do some sort of break out groups for the complainers or stupid questions during class because it was too much disruption with some students just not following and then expecting help.
Professor Pettinichio made this class way better than what I thought it was going to be. I actually found it interesting and can see why it is useful to people. Tests were hard but after he went through the practice test, I am pretty sure that helped me with the final test. Assignments are ok if you make sure not fall behind. the TA's were ok.
this class was intense but so glad I took it. It's required for specialists so I hade to and it was really useful. Probably wouldn't have taken it if wasn't a requirement. There's a lot of stuff here that is useful outside of the major so I recommend getting in even if you're not required to take with Prof P. Didn't think I'd like it this much
was worried to take this online during covid becuase I saw some students complained but honestly not sure what the problem was. The class went well, clear, prof did his thing. Students have to do their thing I guess or this doesn't work. not going to do well if you're not making an effort to do the work.
Great class ! We need more of the focus on civil right laws in Crim . Highly recommend this
Grad course on methods. Didn't know what to expect. David made it very accessible, interesting and I learned a lot more generally about sociological inquiry than at any other point in my graduate courses thus far. He should teach Logic of Inquiry. WE NEED THIS!
If you're taking stats in soc take it with pentinichio . It's the most straightforward and clearest about what to expect . The other section last year had a weird structure and looks like this year someone new is also teaching and that's usually a miss. trust me if you're in year 1 or 2 and need to take it, take it with David
Take this class! If you're interested more in law and society and less criminal justice this you need to take. great class highly recommend it.
Professor David is who you should take for stats. He's clear, makes sense, takes hard concepts and makes it easy to get, the grading is clear. if you feel stressed about stats, you will feel great taking prf David's class. Best prof at UTM
Love that this class exists. Only class that really talks about disability. So useful and Prof. P is great . Really excited to be in it.
It's stats. I mean this is not the most interesting class in the world but it wasn't so bad and the prof makes it interesting. A lot of students suck up time during the online class and there's a lot for the prof to deal with. maybe have breakout sessions for those with more questions. Great class all in all though
Love that this class exists in our program and David was truly passionate and caring - learned a lot. Take it from him if he's teaching it. Really engaging class and makes you think hard about policy implications.
I took this because it's required. I hate stats but this wasn't so bad and the prof makes it pretty easy to get. It's straightforward. I did struggle but a lot of it had to do with other things. He provides a lot of different resources.
LOVE this class. So important. Disability and how it relates to other areas so important for sociology and crim and I'm a crim major. This was so useful. I am glad I took it. At first I wasn't sure, but I am really glad I did. Take this if you're at UTM and care about law and society!
Tooks this because im a specialist and had to. I hate stats but this class was fun actually. It gives you more than just how to do stats. It's also about how to understand findings and write-up findings which is useful for the job I do now. I'm glad they require it. Was a lot of work though.
I'm not in soc and this class is soc focused but so awesome. I didn't think it would be as relevant to criminology and law and society but it is, especially law and society and policy. I strongly recommend this class.
Disability and law didn't really know what to expect but wow this was great. I learned a lot about policymaking and courts here than in other law related classes but also useful if you want to think more about inequality or you want to focus on inequality in your grad work which I am. This was a good step for me pre-MA.
I hate stats and math. I really didn't care to be forced to take this class but I actually didn't mind it. it wasn't my worse class that term and actually got more into it over the term. Prof is great at explaining things. I thought it was a well organized class.
Ok so I loved the writing homeworks in the class. I loved doing op-eds and policy briefs. really useful . Professor Pettinchino is really interesting to listen to and he lets students really get involved in the discussion. Great class on disability and law if you're a CLS major. Plus I think most students in the class were CLS not Soc
I didn't get a chance to do the course evaluation but wanted to say this class was great. There's a lot of reading though and not sure students are doing it but just being in the class and talking through these important social problems with the prof was amazing and its the class I remember most that year or maybe in my whole degree.
Maybe I should be rating Prof David just yet since it's week 3 but this class is awesome so far. I'm glad it's being offered. I think I tried taking this a while ago but I couldn't find the class anywhere. I totally agree with the reviews of 429. Take it if you get the chance.
Great class. I'm in Crim and this class is actually way more about law and society than I thought. Highly recommend this class to grad students in Crim interested in understanding civil rights, health, education policy...
I said attendance is mandatory because you have in-class activities and he expects you to attend and not just rely on the narrated powerpoiunts slides online. This class was fine. I think students complain a lot becuase they can't believe they have to take math and actually do stuff and be marked on it. But the class was very manageable
He is the most passive-aggressive teacher I have ever had. He makes you feel stupid more by asking a simple question and teaches as though we should have the same background on the subject that he does from teaching the course for so many years. Maybe because it is an online class, but I wouldn't recommend having him as a professor.
I hate stats plus this is online and it's covid but overall this wasn't that bad. You can get away with skipping a few webinars and looking at his online powerpoint. But I think you need to show up sometimes because he makes you do in-class activities for credit. I think a lot of students check out and ask annoying questions. Overall ok class
this class is finally over yay. he's a good prof and it's just a subject I don't really know why I need but anyways he made it work. It wasn't that bad, and the lectures and online material are easy to follow. TAs aren't that helpful especially one of them who seemed clueless but prof David was pretty good at answering questions by email quickly.
Great class. Never took a class on disability. This class makes me want to get a masters degree.
Whatever you do don't take it from Dr. Schwartzman! Why she's doing this class this year? It was incomprehensible. I should have waited to take it from Petinicchio but I needed to get it out of the way.
The class was good. Lots of people were still not coming in because of COVID and he treated the course as a seminar because it was small and wanted discussion but people were checked out. Hard time to teach a class like this, but the lectures were amazing
this class is always full was on waitlist. some people drop because they don't want to do the writing assignment which my friends and I thought was pretty fun. It was an opinion editorial. Lectures were engaging and you learn a lot would tally recommend it again to anyone. You'll come away with gaining new knowledge.
He's very passive-aggressive, often dives into examples before explaining the basics, and uses mathematical language assuming you know it. TA is useless, practical sessions are useless after week 4, and homework/lab questions are vague. The program needed for the labs/homework is difficult to use/old/laggy. You will fail if you can't teach yourself
David is a very passive-aggressive teacher, you can tell he's knowledgeable but doesn't realize us second years don't know what he spent years learning, the concepts themselves are okay, I taught myself a lot of it while adding onto to what David taught, hw is managable but the tests are really hard, it was an okay class
I hate math. Had to take this class for criminology. In the end wasn't bad. I actually liked it and found it helpful. I wouldn't obviously take it again but it ended up being one of my fav courses this term. Prof Pentinichio is great. TAs were not that great though. Also some students were annoying taking up class time with dumb questions.
Love this class why don't we have more stuff on disability??? Didn't think I'd care that much about this in real life but eye opening class even for what I want to do in criminology . take this class if you can !
We need more of this in the MPP program!!! this was the only class I got the chance to actually think about issues and discover where my passions lie. Great prof, helpful, assignments were manageable and relevant to our field. Take this class with Prof P if you can
Take disability 429! Didn't know what to expect but really liked this class. You have a few short writing homeworks which were pretty good and sort of helpful if you want to write reports. Two online essay tests where you choose some questions to answer. It was fair test. come to lectures and discussion, it's really the best for this class
looks like you either liked stats or you don't and negative comments I dont know maybe are true but some are exaggerated and probably from people who never showed up. Not peoples favourite class I get it, but honestly, this was better than a lot of UTM classes. At least he's not boring and made it interesting to listen to id take his other courses
By far my favourite class in the MPP program. It's the only class I actually remember learning something from. We need more of these courses in the program.
semester finally over. Not my favourite class, but in the end it was fine. I think the prof did what he could . I learned a lot and thought I would really just hate it but I think half way through the semester I started paying attention and it helped. He's a good prof if you actually make efforts to connect with him and the material.
I learned a lot in Dr. Pettinicchio's class. Classes were engaging and more of a discussion between the class and the prof. I found his class to be one of the most interesting and informative I have taken at UofT so far. I also really liked each of the assignments and thought the grading was fair and a good amount of feedback was given.
weird situation because I failed this course with Pettinichio and now taking it again with someone else who I don't think is an actual prof but a TA. It's ***** awful. I would do anything to have prof David back even though I bombed the course the first time. This glorified TA should not teach anything math related.
Prof. P is good at teaching - he is clear in lectures and gives examples too. I liked his style very much. He is open to answering questions too. HW assingments and tests were not super challening, but not super easy. Labs were very difficult. You don't need to read the textbook, but it's good to use for practice questions/preparing if you like.
Prof has way too much attitude and is not willing to help students figure out the software needed for his OWN class. Wish I did not have to take this.
At first I felt the class was unstructured because prof would begin with discussion with class then do a powerpoint lecture about 45 minutes into the class but actually ended up really liking this. i feel like I remember the topics and conversations in this class more than any thing else from last term. Great class strongly recommend .
Professor did not want to help students with the program for his class and had quite the attitude when responding to emails, not very professional.
Taking this online stats as a requirement . It is what it is but I find the professor's lectures to be good. There was a glitch getting access to SPSS but that was solved. I saw a comment that he is not helpful on the tech stuff but he posted clear guidelines about how to access the system and links and it works. I don't see the problem.
excellent grad course would highly recommend!
I hate math but the class was alright. I actually learned something and feel less anxious about doing more statistics. He explains things well. You just have to come to class. Some students were a bit annoying with questions because they didn't prep dragging down lecture but Prof P handled it well enough.
Take this class! Amazing prof amazing content ! We need more of this at UTM
learned everything from my peers and TA, rather than the actual prof in lectures. lots of students had complaints about his attitude, made me personally scared to ask questions due to his rude responses when someone would ask something in the chat. if you like to ask questions without judgement, dont take this course.
Great class. One of the best at UTM. Prof is engaging you'll learn a lot and I applied some of what I got from the class in my new job and I didn't expect that but yeah . highly recommend
GREAT CLASS ! highly recommend if you're interested in the organization of work, professions, and inequalities!! Great prof. Super engaging .
This was Sociology of Work and Occupations but in industrial relations. Great class. Only class so far where we actually got to think in depth about real things tied to work but also professor P. tied it to theories and I really got to love sociology. Im thinking of pursuing a PhD in sociology because of this class. It was great!!!!
This class was beautiful. I don't have a better word. The right mix of student participation and prof. David p.'s lecture. I learned so much. So insightful. I would definitely take any other class he might offer in IR. Or maybe just transfer to SOC. I strongly recommend taking this class if you're interested in work and professions
