Lectures are confusing and he is hard to follow
Really bizarre lecture/course set up. There aren't really lectures in class we kinda just ramble about homework/off topic information. If you like structure to a class, I don't recommend.
Hes probably one of the worst professors Ibe had at OSU. He seems like a great guy but I feel like I learn nothing from his class. His lecture are super long and boring. They consist of him just rambling on about assignments and random things that dont fit in the lecture! He makes things really confusing so read the book if you take him!
Not a great professor, he twists concepts around to make them way more confusing than they need to be. Studying is mostly trying to understand what he is saying, and even his powerpoint slides are hard to follow because the grammar is so bad. He seems nice enough, but I highly recommend avoiding taking his class.
You can tell he is having trouble with finding a right teaching method. Its not fair to any of us students because it is affecting us and our grade. Hes all over the place and not straightforward at all. The tests are confusing and he says multiple answers could be right but he says to pick the best one. If you want a good grade do not take him!!!
He literally talked about his rate my professor score in class, trying to passive aggressively justify himself as to why he teaches the way he does. He answers emails rudely, has the grammar ability of a five-year-old, doesnt care about his students grades, and gives zero notice when it comes to doing group projects. 10/10 would NOT reccomend.
He tries his best to help you understand the material, you just have to communicate with him instead of complain about it.
He is passionate about what he does. First year teaching the material so he is trying his best. Just be patient and ask him questions. Always willing to help you.
Hes not as bad as everyone is saying. Lots of lectures and he makes things harder than they need to be sometimes. He is a really nice professor and is trying his best.
Dr. Phenis does an adequate job of preparing you for the exams. He gives practice concepts and hints at question topics during lecture. If you ACTUALLY pay attention in class and reach out to him when you're having difficulty, you should be fine. While group work can be frustrating if you answer the full question he generally grades forgivingly.
Professor Phenis does not seem comfortable in the teaching environment. This class is book heavy, and I teach myself almost all of the material. The structure is all over the place, the powerpoints are confusing, and the test questions are unnecessarily long. He said 1 of the exams is more difficult and people failed, yet maintained the same test??
Lots of people hate on him but what they don't understand is that he teaches a difficult subject! Sometimes the stuff he says is a bit confusing but he always clarifies. Overall great professor and knows what he's talking about. If you study and pay attention in lectures you'll get an A.
Hes unprofessional, brought up this website in class. He seems like he genuinely cares about the subjects but I didnt like his teaching style. He didnt seem like he really cared if people wanted him to slow down. He is very passionate and to pass you have to spend a lot of time with him in office hours. take 2300/3313 with another professor.
Makes an already dull research methods course more boring. Has a talent of making simple concepts more confusing. I don't know if its hard to focus because of his monotone voice or his constant stuttering. Acknowledges that he hasnt prepared us for an exam on numerous occasions but continues to make exams where the class average is a F.
Very obvious that this is his first year teaching, his tests are very difficult as he makes you choose what answer is BEST out of a pool of answers that are (most times) all correct. It seems like he is passionate about what he teaches but is unsure about how to convey it all to students who have yet to learn any of it - effects your grade a lot.
He over complicates all topics. Typical example of a first year teacher coming in and trying to overreach all the material. Hes gone back and forth between lecture styles and the book he offers doesnt offer nearly enough workable examples. Dude is straight floundering and bringing the class down with him. Nice guy, bad teacher.
Hes very nice. Hes trying to learn how to teach material and organize it into tests. He wants his students to succeed but the material is very hard through the way he teaches it. Its a lot of material, and tests are hard. Hes overall not bad, just wish the class was a little more organized and to know what he wants us to focus on.
Unorganized. Its his first year so I try to be understanding, but its ridiculous. Takes forever to grade items, assignments have little structure/instruction, exams are hard. We thankfully have opportunity to make up a few points for an exam. Some people are harsh, but he truly needs to do something much different if he wants students to succeed.
He rarely lectures in a way that makes sense and when he goes over assignments he will be wrong when explaining important topics in the class. His tests are a nightmare (extremely confusing) and the strict attendance policy should be removed considering it's more confusing to be in class than it is to attempt to teach yourself with the textbook.
Worst professors had in my college career. Exams are complex pertaining to more simple content. Countless mistakes that he has to correct. When presenting information he mixes up his words and confuses students. He does not speak with confidence. You'd be better off not going to class and teaching yourself. Do yourself a favor and take someone else
Pretty good professor. Hard exams but if you show up to every class youll do well on his exams. Review days are really important and help a ton. Somewhat confusing chapter lessons but its really just because the concepts being taught are pretty confusing. Nice professor and solid course.
Hes a good professor Has a lot of group assignments but gives you the chance to change out of your assigned group if needed. Exams are kind of hard but if you show up every day you should be fine. Helpful tophat reviews for exams.
The worst professor I've had in my life. Period. Rather than taking criticism and fixing the things he is awful at, he gets defensive and tries to make excuses for why he makes such a simple so much harder than it needs to be. He messes up on his slides, messes up while talking, and then tries to go back and defend himself messing up. Terrible.
Gives you grad level questions on exams, doesnt help much when it comes to studying. The concepts he discusses are far more difficult in class than when reading in the book. I will say taking data analysis before would help.
Where do I even start: this guy clearly just doesnt get it. He has now changed his lecture style for a third time, there is little to no practice problems for materials he claims needs to be practiced outside of class, and he CONSTANTLY talks about concepts for several minutes then goes oops no wait I meant the opposite. Ridiculously awful.
This guy... He should not be teaching at OSU. He is nearly impossible to understand in class, is completely scattered and unorganized, and does more to confuse students than teach them. I've done well on the exams because I had previous experience with some of the material, but I understand how others could be completely lost.
This is one of my hardest classes when it shouldnt be. Phenis is new and obviously hasnt found the best way to teach his material. Hes smart but horrible at explaining things. Hes trying his best but needs to figure out how to organize his classes better for the future. Lots of easy hw saved my grade. 3 exams are so hard he had to curve them all.
One of the worst professors I have had at OSU. I normally can deal with bad professors but he is so confusing and does not provide clear details at all. He is a hard grader and assigns very hard homework. If you take this class, find another professor.
I actually have no idea how people are rating him so low. He gives a large amount of extra credit after every test and if you read the book then you'll for sure pass. He grades relatively quick on the things that matter (midterms) and even though he is slightly confusing in lecture, overall I feel like he really cares and is trying. Get over it.
His lectures are very fast-paced and there is a lot of information but the tests are very straight forward if you put in the work to learn the material on the lectures. He posts study guides for the tests and creates online lectures to help before an exam for the most important material. People who honestly complain about him dont put in the work.
Really needs to take a remedial teaching course: unclear points, constant stuttering, non-confident speaking, etc... Constantly tells us he didn't prepare us for the exams but continues to teach the same way.. Most importantly, this man PULLED UP HIS RATEMYPROFESSOR COMMENTS in class and proceeded to dissect them and defend himself.. very strange
IMO, worst prof at OSU. He's RUDE, awful at explaining EVERYTHING then gets annoyed when the class doesn't understand? (which leads to awk. silences) Makes everything so much more difficult than it needs to be. I DREAD coming to class bc the energy is so bad. Pulled up his ratings in class & tried defending himself. Doesn't know what he's doing.
He doesn't do a good job of conveying information to the class and makes easy topics way more difficult than they have to be. Projects/group assignments do not help with what we are supposed to be learning. He is unorganized and makes typos/grammar mistakes everywhere. The class is fine if you have the book, so just teach yourself if you take him.
He can be a little ramble-y, but he honestly cares a lot about his students. If you're struggling with something or content, talk to him. You'd be surprised how helpful he is, and willing to work with you. One of the most considerate professors I've had.
Nice guy, boring lecturer. The textbook is a lot more clear than the lectures, so it would be in your best interest to read the textbook and teach yourself the material before coming to class (attendance is taken daily). His exams are very difficult but he curves them and gives the class a lot of opportunities for extra credit.
Get ready for your grade to be based almost solely on group projects! he's clearly very intelligent, but he almost expects his students to have the same level of knowledge. OSU believes this is a very important class and won't accept any other school's interpretation, and I was pretty disappointed. I felt like I got nothing from this class.
Tedious group projects, overly difficult exams littered with grammatical mistakes, gives out extra credit points for damage control and padding on these group projects, boring and awkward lectures, and a rather rude emailer. Harsh for a first year, I know, but this is a lower level psych class. Take all his classes with someone else if you can.
do yourself a favor and not take his class. terrible speaker, rambles on about wrong things then tries to correct himself and confuses students. gives a lot of extra credit because his exams are terrible and full of mistakes. Group projects have so little to do with the material and he did not even write up the requirements until 2-3 days before
I personally loved this teacher. I took this class as an elective so the class isnt directly related to my major at all which made it tough at least for me but hes so caring he emails back super fast if you have questions and there are a lot of opportunities for extra credit. The lectures are a bit boring at times but he loves what he does.
The material itself includes a concept and then it goes into a ton of exceptions to rules. He does a good job of trying to get these points across and will sit with you until you get it. I really do believe this class has prepared me well for later down the road for research. People should get over themselves and not just surf for easy A's.
At the beginning of the semester, he was a bit rough, but after he took feedback from students in class he became more receptive! He's not as bad as everyone says he is, and frankly people are being too hard on him. His lectures are very straightforward and he genuinely wants everyone to do as good as they possibly can!
I'm not one to complain about professors but I had to make an exception after this course. He rambled about random topics, constantly had to correct himself, and couldn't answer questions because he isn't an "expert on that topic" as he would say. On many occasions he would give information that was so incorrect students had to notify him.
Excuses are the nails used to build the house of failure. My eyes roll into the back of my head when I read reviews on profs that say "he's not as bad as what everyone says" BUT for prof. Phenis this is actually the truth. He is BEYOND fair with grading, will make time for you if you need to review, amazing extra credit, CURVES EXAMS. He's great.
He was very receptive to what we as students said we needed from him in order to get the most from this class. He offered tons of extra credit. He would literally jump over seats during the exam to help out students if they had questions. Would be almost impossible to fail. Lectures weren't interesting but the subject isn't anyway. Use the book!!!!
He gave tons of extra credit, but it wasn't worth as much as he said it would be. Nice guy, definitely receptive to how the class was feeling, but he was too lazy to figure out Carmen. The reason we had so much extra credit was because he didn't want to have to figure out how to drop our lowest exam in Carmen. If you can take someone else, do it.
I feel for this professor bc tries his best. His lectures do not help at all. A lot of unnecessary assignments that do not help you learn. Exams are kinda hard but he gives a lot of EC to make up for that. With that being said this class is very doable if you are able to read the textbook and completely teach yourself the information.
The lectures are super fast and I learned nothing from them. I read slides on my own every day and went to his office hours pretty often to understand things on slides--really spent a lot of time on this course! There are quizzes and group assignments as well. The exams are hard. However, he was "insane" in giving extra credits, so a super easy A!
okay honestly this class was so annoying and his lectures are so boring he just reads the textbook, BUT the group assignments are really reasonable and if you try on them they actually help you understand things and he grades them really easy. he gives SO much extra credit too! not the best at explaining, but the textbook is great.
Gives a lot of extra credit that makes up for a higher grade in the class. Lectures are very unorganized and he does not teach. Going to class was a waste of time but he took attendance
It was his first year teaching, so he struggled a bit, but it was obvious how hard he worked at improving. I learned a lot and thought that he did pretty well by the end of the year. I would definitely take another class of his. If he maintains his effort level, he will soon be one of the best professors on campus.
The lectures seem like he is just reading from the book, they're super boring and he doesn't seem interested in teaching the material. He is very hard to reach outside of class and takes over a week to respond to emails. He also seems very annoyed when students don't understand the question or know the answer, and will ignore and talk over them.
Prof. Phenis goes quickly in lectures but he covers all the materials that are on his tests and is very accessible and eager to help students if they are struggling. He provides ample time for questions and doesn't teach extra information that you won't be tested over. His class is structured very clearly. Would definitely recommend him.
the class is well organized. he made sure all questions were answered. this was the pandemic semester, he handled the class as well as possible. overall, a very nice guy. would recommend him!
Dr. Phenis is a good guy, but he is a newer professor. He doesn't take attendance but if you do not go you will have no idea what you need to know. Study guides + his review sessions are your best bet. Group projects WILL be the majority of your grade. He does "curve" his exams very generously (hardest five questions are extra credit).
Often was unprepared for class. His slides matched the textbook sometimes word for word. Less than half of the class attended lecture because if you read the textbook, youd do well on exams. Any examples given in class were exactly what the textbook has. He was rude to students and would talk over you or get mad if you don't understand something.
He really wasn't that bad. The course was 4 weeks, which is intense, but with the right people, you can get through it. There were group projects 4 weeks which I hated because my group did not communicate. Quizzes were difficult, timed 30 mins, and questions worded hard and only one chance. He's a great person for helping students in times of need.
I make A's in all my courses but I had to spend so much time studying, watching videos, etc in this course just to get the grade I wanted. This is a 3 credit course, but I spent at least 12 hours a week working on assignments for this course. Simplify what we need to know for exams because most of us have to take this for our audit, not by choice
Group projects were awful and that with quizzes made up your grade. Quizzes were 30 mins and open note, but one try. If you get a bad group then good luck, it's a lot of work to do alone and everyone gets the same grade. He changes his due dates because of the protest which was awesome, I respect him a lot for that.
Professor Phenis is a nice guy, and you can tell he knows his stuff. But the way he teaches was unbearable. He was super disorganized, would jump from ideas rapidly with little explanation, wasn't able to make the material understandable and even showed up late a few times.
Tests are based off lectures/slides so you will likely not receive a good grade without attending class. Some of the hardest I've had, really test your understanding. I'd recommend taking good notes or recording the lectures. Dr. Phenis grades fairly & tons of dropped+extra credit questions on tests. Great guy & professor, bad reviews are unjust.
Lacks empathy and respect for students. Group assignments are pointless and a waste of time. I know this is a required class for psychology majors; find a different professor.
I took Phenis' class his 1st semester teaching and my first semester of undergrad. I have difficulty paying attention in class and his teaching style didn't help -- I studied by taking notes off his lecture slides. He had a fair amount of bonus opportunities that semester (not sure if he still does) and I finished the class with a 97.
First thing to know, his quizzes are unreasonable difficult. I studied vigorously for his quizzes and still get a 50% at best AND his quizzes are worth 30% of the class grade. The group assignments, which are what you work the hardest on, are barely worth any of your grade. I just feel like his grading is backwards in a sense. Wouldn't recommend
It is extremely difficult to understand what he is explaining. He stammers too much when he talks. He also often does not finish one sentence to start another sentence which makes me so confused and cannot get what he is trying to say.
Phenis is an absolute sweetheart he gets so excited about glutamate its adorable. I had him for an online corona class, so the tests were open note. Theres a lot of material covered, but its not super hard if youre interested in it. Definitely easier to handle if you go in with an understanding of anatomy and basic psychology.
Professor Phenis is a nice enough guy, but as far as classes/teaching styles go...I would recommend a different professor for this course. Quizzes were *extremely* difficult and made up the largest portion of the grade, the lectures were difficult to follow along and he always seemed frazzled if anyone had a question. Nice guy, not a great prof.
Dr Phenis is a good guy and tries to make the class interesting but it just doesnt work. The lectures are extremely long and confusing. The quizzes (usually weekly, make most of your grade) are incredibly hard, no matter how much you study. The assignments are also very complicated and take time. Background knowledge before this class is a must.
Phenis is not an inherently bad person, but he is overall bad at being a higher education teacher. His teaching is so inconsistent and hard to follow, his quizzes and exams are unnecessarily difficult, and his delivery of the material is hard to follow. I've had him in two classes and his classes have been my largest obstacles in college. AVOID
Phenis literally gives you everything you need to succeed in his class. He knows a lot and is passionate about the topics. He also gives study guides, which if you actually understand, you should do well on his assessments. My class was fully online and everything was open note. Overall, the class isn't hard, especially if you actually enjoy it.
His lectures are quite long and boring, it helped to listen to them at 2x the speed. The mastery assignments are really hard to get 100's on, as they are graded pretty harshly. The course content is pretty interesting, but it is a significant amount of work.
Dr. Phenis teaches in a way that shows you he is passionate about his class. Going into the semester, the material may seem dense. However, if you rewatch his recorded lectures, break down the material, and actively learn throughout the course, you will do well! Attend office hours, form reliable study groups, and be persistent. Keys to success!
Dr. Phenis was a fair professor. You have to watch the lectures and take detailed notes to do well on the weekly quizzes and biweekly mastery assignments. The textbook helps clarify and reinforce concepts. He goes pretty in-depth with the lectures, and I feel that I didn't learn much for the long term. Lots of extra credit at the end!
Dr. Phenis is a pretty great professor. He has weekly quizzes, occasional mastery assignments, a final, and tons of extra credit (he added 5 points to the final). If you really listen to his lectures he stresses what's important and provides study guides for every mastery assignment and the final. Fair grading and consistent effort is rewarded.
Very bad teacher. He was so in his own world that he forgot we were intro to Neuroscience students who did not yet speak the foreign language of Neuro. Dude needed to tone it down and stop talking to us as if we had P.H.D's in the field. Really did not explain things at all to us.
He's really passionate about his stuff & is a nice guy BUT I wouldnt take him again. His quizzes are v hard and though I had a 90 going into the final, I bombed it and ended with a B-. He also took weeks to grade our group assignments if you were in a group like #12 and on. Sucked bc we didnt get our grade till 2 days before our final proj was due.
His classes are lecture heavy and there are a lot of quizzes and group projects but he is fairly generous with extra credit and the quiz and exam content come mostly right from lectures. If you stay on top of things you should do fine in this class. If you get less than a B- in his classes it's probably your fault.
His class is incredibly hard, he is horrible at lecturing and treats students like they should just know better. His lectures are incredibly difficult to get through, long and wordy, but he says nothing throughout them. He grades like he is talking down on you, kind of rude commentary. I have never had a professor like this and I dont recommend.
The coursework is easy and basic. It is easy to understand and learn. He does mandatory group work with a randomly assigned group and it doesn't relate to the course. Feedback is not helpful and he belittles you. The "help" he gives does not relate at all and it does not make sense. Definitely recommend avoiding his course, just wait for a new prof
Super caring and is always willing to explain concepts further inside and outside of class
While Phenis knows his information and is very good at knowing this topic, he is not very good at explaining this information to his students. Very knowledgeable but sometimes it feels as though you must know his level of information to understand him. Great guy and very smart, but a bad professor. Only take again if he can learn to explain better.
he is really good at explaining things and helpful. i have had zooms with him and he is very caring snd wants his students to do well and learn
I heard some bad things about this professor but was pleasantly surprised. I am not the smartest person, but I had success in this class by watching recorded lectures. He tells you exactly whats on the quizzes and offers aid outside of class.
Dr. Phenis was a decent professor and is a very intelligent guy, but this course is difficult and his 6 mastery assignments were graded somewhat harshly. There is opportunity for extra credit however. All lectures were recorded so you did not have to attend, but you definitely need to watch them because he includes important information.
I do not recommend taking Phenis for psych 2300. Your entire grade is essentially group projects, and I don't know a single person who got above a 70 on his final. He gives good feedback on work, but the material is confusing and his lectures don't help.
If I could go back in time, Id tell myself not to take this course with this professor. He doesnt give timely feedback. His quizzes are extremely difficult. All his in class examples can be found in the book. And he admits that his final is way harder than the rest of his content. He is okay as a lecturer but that a good professor does not make.
Dr. Phenis is incredibly intelligent and engaged in the material. This class is definitely lecture heavy and it is important to watch every lecture and take really good notes. The quizzes and mastery assignments were challenging at times, but were not impossible with good notes and extra effort. He gives tons of extra credit also!
One of the worst classes Ive ever taken. I didnt believe people when they said he was awful but they were right. The material is so easy but he is sooo boring and the final was one of the hardest finals Ive ever taken. The whole class is basically a group project too and he grades that stuff really harshly. Seriously do not take a class with him
The class is informative only if you are aiming for research, otherwise it's meaningless and boring. The group project is a pain if you care. You will spend so long preparing something on one enjoys reading. He would say he grades each person but he doesn't bother to. If your teammate does bad job you are doomed. I think he hates this class.
I hated this course. The lectures were hard to follow because it was so boring. He uses terms that he hasn't taught yet and will tell you it'll make sense later but never does. The quizzes are easy but the final exam was horrible. I recommend avoiding this course at ALL costs.
He wasn't a bad professor but he didn't teach in an engaging way considering how much content is covered. Over-explains a lot and you're better off just rewatching his lectures and learning at your own pace. Attendance is not required which is nice.
I honestly thought I would ask Reddit and go with their opinion on this teacher (I was warned but not as much as here). If you want a high A dont take him, his class is based on GROUP WORK, if they do bad, you will receive an F! I would take someone else. Quizzes=EASY, but his classes=boring and doesn't explain well on what he wants in his projects
I really liked the set-up of Dr. Phenis' lectures. The information on his slides was well-arranged and was fairly concise yet thorough. This class will definitely require you to apply yourself and make connections between material, but Phenis did a nice job at making complex concepts easier to understand and provided helpful feedback when grading.
While he was very knowledgeable on the topics, I found that he didn't do as well translating it to his students. I often was left confused and he was very hard to reach via email. He wouldn't email me back about assignments or questions often until a week later. I would not recommend this professor unless you are already well-versed in psych.
dr. phenis responded to emails quickly, but he is a slow grader. 3 big group assignments with weekly group meetings, weekly open note quizzes, and a final. super nice guy, just often overcomplicated the material. tons of extra credit, the material is just boring but he is not a bad professor by any means. posts lectures and slides on carmen.
Dr. Phenis is clearly a wicked smart man. He knows what he is talking about but the issue is he explains the content in a way which is hard to understand. Also, your entire grade of the class is dependent on group projects, so good luck if you get randomly assigned bad partners!
The professor is a nice guy but he talks so much that you will be confused I promise you. Also the majority of your grade will be based on these three group projects so pray you get a good group. I had a great group and we struggled together to get through each assignment.
You can tell Prof. Phenis really knows what he talks about and that he is truly fascinated by psychology. With that being said this whole class was based on 3 big group assignments which sucks. Luckily I got a good group but if your group sucks you're screwed. There are open note quizzes and a cumulative final. Attendance mandatory on group days.
Prof. Phenis was a great professor for both classes I had him. Very understanding and gives thorough feedback to questions. Lots of group work, but nothing too difficult. Would take his classes again!
Dr. Phenis was the best professor I have had yet at OSU. Dr. Phenis does a phenomenal job bridging the basics to detailed aspects of the complex topics discussed. He really emphasizes learning and understanding the concepts by allowing TWO makeups per assessment/reflection/quiz. Everything in this class is open book/notes. Take with a grain of salt
Dr. Phenis is a great professor who really knows what he is talking about, and he is really passionate. I just found the class to be really hard for an 'entry level' class. I am not wanting to go into research in psychology, but those who are would really benefit from this class. The quizzes are easy, but the projects are a lot.
What I liked about his class was that there was lots of opportunity for extra credit and remediations to bring up assignment/quiz grades up to 100%. He posted his lectures online and all assignments/quizzes are open book open note. However, his actual teaching method was hard to follow and not very clear.
For 3313 there is no group work and you can correct your quizzes up to a 100%. Dr. Phenis is very knowledgeable about the topic but his lectures are slide heavy. If you can pay attention in class he is an excellent professor. Grades are basically determined by how much work you put in since you can correct everything to a 100% besides the final.
The one thing I can recommend is do the extra credit as you go!! It helps you study for the quizzes every week and is super easy! This class is heavy on group projects and meeting with your group every week to work towards the final original research article, but you all get gradely separately so others work doesn't affect you!
He will do whatever he can to help you get an A. You can redo all quizzes and assignments (which are all open note anyways) and he even does quizzes with the entire class together and gives everyone full credit. All lectures are available on zoom and as long as you pay attention you should get an A.
This class is mostly group work so if you participate and have a good group you will get a good grade. BUT lectures are extremely difficult to understand and the final is near impossible. You can tell he knows the topic well, but explains them in the most bland, boring and most un-understandable way that makes the class impossible to learn materials
Maybe this class is better if you get a decent group. I wouldn't know, my group was awful. Quizzes are fine if you look over slides, but the final is absolutely brutal despite a lot of studying. Appreciated that he'd let you get quiz points back through review. Seems nice and knowledgeable, but the way the course is structured makes it so hard!
phenis gets a bad rap, but he has sm fair policies to give you a good grade. attendance isn't mandatory, he records every class & posts slides, allows you to submit any assignment late (just fill out a late form), minimal hw, extra credit, etc. even if u get a bad group, he'll grade individually if u just reach out & he will help in any way. b nice
Great professor, very knowledgeable. Amazing class for all neuro majors, as it gives you so much info. Interested grading scale, that seemed to be good for most people. Overall a great prof.
Weird class setup that makes it hard not to earn a good grade. Gave an incredible amount of extra credit and allows you to remediate everything but the exams twice. Bland lecturer but he is knowledgeable about the material.
Dr. Phenis is a pretty nice guy. Had some issues with my group (group work is VERY important in this class) and he was willing to grade group projects individually. Attendance isn't mandatory but don't take that to heart, you need the lectures. There's plenty of extra credit available, I would do it weekly to help with learning the material.
Dr. Phenis is extremely knowledgeable, helpful, and puts in so much effort to benefit his students, such as providing detailed feedback on many assignments, allowing us to correct mistakes, etc. The assessment assignments were challenging but help to learn. He provides everything you need to do well.
Currently sitting in his class wishing I wasn't here. He has explained this assignment for over 30 minutes despite the same explanation being typed out on Carmen. He overexplains everything to the point where his point is completely lost. Makes the content and projects WAY more complicated and deep than it needs to be. I tried to avoid him but alas
Overexplains during lecture and is difficult to understand points. Group work is a majority of the class. Slides are easily accessible and lecture is optional (posts zoom), but quizzes are difficult and final is very difficult.
He's a pretty good teacher, but his lectures can be quite long and sometimes boring. His quizzes aren't terrible but his assessment assignments are pretty hard and he grades those harshly. Very few extra credit opportunities.
Feel like a very strong foundation in bio is needed before taking this course. If not, you may seriously struggle in this course. The assessments were difficult, despite studying well in advance for them; graded harshly and won't tell you were you were incorrect. Heard other neuroscience professors are a bit easier, suggest taking it with them!
The lectures were boring and difficult to understand, with lots of overexplaining/lost in thought. Tough grader and just unenjoyable class and classwork.
I don't get all the hate, if you do all the extra credit and actually pay attention in class then this will be a breeze. Also this class is extremely group heavy so if you are having problems with your group members in the beginning you MUST let him know. Overall not the worst class but I am so excited to be done.
Overall I think he was a great prof. The content itself gets pretty difficult, but Phenis is extremely helpful if you ask him. If you take the time to get a good understanding of the content it isn't difficult to get an A in the class. You can remediate everything up to 100% so your grade really relies on the effort you put into the class.
Group projects are irritating but fair. Lectures are recorded which is helpful. All assignments have one week grace period. Hes very nice and easy to talk to but sometimes is almost too smart to properly explain things. The class overall is easy and hes very fair added a curve to the final and lots of extra credit available just start early!
Not sure why there are so many 1 star reviews. He was amazing. All lectures are recorded (what he says is important). Multiple extra credit opportunities. AND the ability to redo all quizzes and assignments for full credit. The final was only worth 9%. From what I've heard about other 3313 professors Phenis is by far the best.
I personally just hated his exam/quiz policies. The quizzes and exams are worth 60% of your grade, so if you mess up on one, congrats you just dropped a whole two letter grade. You can do "quiz remediations" BUT the process is so long and tedious, you can't even earn your full score back, AND you may not even be guaranteed the points back.
Phenis himself is a nice guy but his lectures are boring and a big part of your grade is group projects. I had a good group, but I know many and who suffered. He does have a good policy for late work and extra credit so that's a benefit. He's not the toughest grader but some of the assignments seemed very far out of the scope of the course.
Good luck
Very boring lectures and tough quizzes that make up the majority of the grade. Mainly group projects that are so in-depth and confusing for an intro-level class.
Dr. Phenis is a nice professor. Although his lecture is boring and quizzes are difficult to understand. But he has a nice late hw policy and if you did something wrong, he will give you an opportunity to fix that if you have a reasonable reason.
Dr. Phenis was a great professor, lectures were informative and you could tell he cared about teaching the material. Class itself was not too difficult at all, one cumulative final, sort of bi-weekly quizzes and assessment assignments (less points, weighted heavier). If you pay attention in lecture you will have no problem! Offers remediations too
Content is difficult and his lectures can be a bit hard to understand but if you pay attention and take advantage of remediations it's completely doable to get an A, I found it very helpful to make my own notes and to ask him any questions after class.
Very difficult to keep up with his lectures and often times his test/quiz questions arent even found on the slides he provides. You'd have to rewatch all of his zoom recordings to understand topics because you cant really study off of his slides.
Do NOT waste your time with him he is so boring and the group projects are probably the worst thing ever. You will inevitably be confused the entire time and not end up learning a single thing
A research methods class truly about neuroscience. Overly complex group assignments that go way out in the weeds. Confusing instructions and generally boring to listen to. Would not recommend
Dr. Phenis was able to answer any questions I had quickly. People noted that he is boring, but the material he has to work with is so dry. He does have a lot of guidelines and deadlines that can get confusing. Don't have flaky partners; the group project is a big part of the grade. There are many ways to succeed if you work hard and seek it out.
Dr. Phenis is a fantastic teacher. Even if you miss deadlines or receive a poor grade, he always offers extensions, penalty removals, and remediations to improve your score. He's not always available, but during work hours, you're guaranteed a comprehensive response quickly. Deadlines and instructions on assignments are very clear and regulated.
Lectures can be dry, but Dr. Phenis is approachable. Tough group projects require diligent partners. Quizzes are tricky, but he's flexible on late work. Unstuck study helps streamline study prep.
He is the worst professor I've ever taken a class with. He's a boring and bad lecturer, he allows to redo things but you have to get 100% on the remediation and do a bunch of work with it which takes hours. 0/10 recommend him. There's much better professors or classes in general (if this isn't a specific requirement for you). Save yourself
Lectures are extremely boring and exhausting with a huge amount of unnecessarily complicated content. He tries to hide important information for tests from the slides and makes questions as convoluted as possible. His free-response questions are graded all-or-nothing, and remediations are graded harshly. This class makes me hate neuroscience.
Phenis is NOT a good lecturer, NOT an easy grader, and NOT a professor to learn from. If you believe that this class will be a wonderful commencement to your neuroscience major, you will be deeply disappointed. The only reason I get an A is by using materials from other sections and studying for my other neuroscience class. Take Dr. Coutellier.
This a very content heavy class, and although the material is hard, you can definitely still end with a good grade if you put the work in. Rewatching each lecture helped me do good on the quizzes and assessments, and there are opportunities to fix your mistakes for a better grade on these assignments as well.
The class was really lecture heavy, but the material was interesting and he gave about a million different chances for extra credit. Even though the assignments he gave were difficult, I feel that they were beneficial because the remediations he offered encouraged students to review past material.
I really enjoyed the structure of this class. People complain about the assignments he gives, but I feel like they were really beneficial because he allows remediations which encourages students to review old material. There are also many opportunities for extra credit.
I wouldn't say that Dr. Phenis is a bad lecturer. The topic of neuroscience isn't meant to be easy. Although attendance isn't mandatory, I suggest you go. He can give a lot of good tips and hints for the assessments. Yes, the grading for them are harsh but there is a reason you get remediations for them. Remediations are grade boosters! Do them!
I'm not sure why Dr.Phenis' ratings are so low, he was an amazing professor. He had flexible deadlines or all assignments, open note exams (including the final), extra credit, and test corrections, and was very nice. An A is 100% possible if you use all available resources. I would 100% take another class with him in the future.
Dr. Phenis is clearly very passionate about research and that's amazing in a prof. but he talks himself into circles and the lectures are so dense you lose focus immediately w/ how much you get talked at. His slides make sense and meeting with him 1on1 clears up a lot of questions, but he makes simple concepts difficult to grasp in class.
Dr. Phenis is a very knowledgeable professor. He records all of his lectures and makes them available to access outside of class. He does not have exams throughout the semester besides the cumulative final. There are some assessments on the material that can be difficult. There are weekly quizzes. He does random TopHats for extra credit as well.
Dr. Phenis is a knowledgeable professor. He records all of his lectures and makes them available to access outside of class. Dr. Phenis is a knowledgable professor who is very passionate about psychology. He prioritizes students learning the content rather than the grade given. All quizzes and exams were open-note and take-home. Overall I would recommend everyone try to get him as a professor.
Horrible group project. Didn't end up learning anything useful due to all of the stress trying to understand the impossibility complex group project directions. His lectures are incredibly dry and uninteresting. Please never take anything with this prof.
Nothing is worth the group project he has you do in this class. It didn't teach me anything, and it was extremely time-consuming and frustrating. He clearly loves the subject, but I found the lectures to be convoluted. He is a good guy, but don't take Research Methods with him.
The course is mainly focused around weekly quizzes, a group project and the final. The quizzes were only 10 questions and done online so they weren't terrible, but often trickily worded. The group project was a majority of the grade, on group work days the whole class was often confused, and asking him for help left us with even more questions.
Dr. Phenis was overall a pretty good professor. The grades come from quizzes and a few writing assignment with a final. I highly recommend going to class as there are top hat questions and if you participate in like 65% or something it will count as extra credit. There are also remediations which were helpful. Especially as a neuroscience major
He loves to hear himself speak, the majority of class will be him repeating the same thing over and over again. He sucks at teaching and should be avoided.
AWFUL, didn't learn a single thing from this class. Quiz's are trick questions. Lectures are dreadful, zero engagement We all started counting the number of times he would say "but I'll explain that later", to which he never did. Group projects are HORRIBLE!! Ridiculously overcomplicated and gained NOTHING from all the work. AVOID him at all costs!
This was a fairly easy course with a few challenging chapters. Each week there would be a quiz over a recent chapter discussed in class and there were a handful of assessment assignments too. The final was challenging as there is a lot of information covered, but not super impactful on your final grade.
Group projects absolutely suck and make no sense. His directions are never clear. His quizzes are worded so badly, google doesn't even know what the right answer is. He's the type to encourage you to talk in class with some "no answer is wrong" bs and then tells you your completely wrong meaning you should actually feel ugly, worthless, and gay.
Think of spongebob's voice. But spongebob's is actually tolerable and he says stuff that makes sense. That does not apply to this class, he speaks at 1000x speed in riddles. Haven't learned a single thing so far and I won't. If you actually want to learn something, look elsewhere.
DO NOT TAKE RESEARCH METHODS WITH THIS PROF. This man repeats himself the whole lecture and speaks a mile a minute. I have gained absolutely nothing from this class. I learn better from ChatGPT than I do this class. The group project assignment instructions are extremely wordy which made it extremely difficult to figure out.
Preface: my friends think I am a genius. I ended with a 99.18%. But from my perspective, I have no idea what is with all of these bad reviews. Dr. Phenis was a phenomenal professor. He is crazy smart and explained things well. He also always cared to re-explain things from past lectures. I am so baffled from these comments because he was awesome.
Cares a lot about his students! You are able to get redemption points back on any assignment even quizzes. You can also get late points removed. He really wants his students to succeed in his class. Although it is very lecture heavy it is sooooooo easy to get an A in this class. Only 1 final exam and it's open note. All the quizzes are open note.
He talks really fast and will go into crazy detail on something and then say "Well I won't quiz you on that" and it's like well why did you talk about that for the last ten minutes. There are opportunities to remediate your grades for pretty much everything, which if you do you'll get a decent grade.
He's average. The class is easy to pass, but his lectures are messy. He stutters a lot and overcomplicates simple topics, using high level language for no reason. You can redo any assignment, quiz, or assessment, there's 3 percent extra credit, no midterms. You can definitely pass the class even if you walk out not knowing much.
I liked that we had a quiz every week that was open note and you could do remediations. He definitely rambles in class but he is very knowledgeable. Easy to pass and he cares about his students, reach out to him if you have any questions.
I felt as though Dr. Phenis was completely all over the place. This class is a prereq for Neuro majors, and it almost made me consider switching. His class was easy to pass due to it being primarily open note, but the inconsistencies in his lectures made it difficult to do so. I felt as though he solely spewed words at us. I don't recommend.
