My Scholars prof for Psych, he is sooo cool. I definitely had a crush on him. He's one of those hyper intelligent people out to make a difference in this world..A very intestesting class, it changed my thinking. I still refer to Evolutionary Psych.

very helpfull teacher, talks about being a vegan all the time. If you're really into psychology then take his class. He's very amiable, and an interesting person to speak to. He also has a double major in psych.

Extremely intelligent man. Altho struggled in class would retake it because of his wit, humor, and his intelligence. tests can be tricky n fustrated at times but he is such a smart man lectures are extremely thought provoking.

i really ended up enjoying this class. it was alot of work (4 tests & a research paper) but i leared a lot. he is really nice & cares about his students. he talks a lot about the environment & class can be boring but hes a good teacher & worth taking!

In the beg. I hated this class, but ended up liking it. It wasn't easy, but he really cares about his students and if he knows you put in alot of effort it will be noticed. I don't highly rec. him but if you take him I think you will like enjoy it

one of the best at SMC.class is an evolutionary psych class. The ideas resonate easily and changed the way I approach living. Suddenly my own problems and those of modern humanity make sense, which allows for compassion and understanding.take this class

He is a great prof. I really enjoyed his class. No papers and quizzes. Three exams and a final cumulative which his optional if you have a "A/B." Read the material and ask a lot of questions.

Dr. phillips is an awsome professor. his ways of giving a lecture can't possibly be anymore clear than what he gives. He gives a great performance in the class and is willing to help any student, but you as the student have to go and ask for it.

The only negative thing is that regardless how well you listen in class or how good your notes are, you NEED to suck up the book, his test are directly from the book. Gives study guides. This professor is just that...a PROFESSOR. I learned a lot from him, not just psych but life period. He is a fun, entertaining, smart, wise, honest, caring professor. If you have the drive and time to learn, he is more than willing to teach you...great to have if this is your first semster!!

Professor Philips will without a doubt be one of the best teachers you'll ever have. He was for me. His discussions are always extremely interesting that you actually want to go to class. Also he's always got some interesting news, book, or movie he'll tell you about. Take a class with this guy!!!!

This was the best professor I've ever had before. He is very intelligent and clear about his expecatations of you as a student. His lectures were interesting and very informative. He helped me see the world in a different light. If you take psych 1, go with Phillips!!

This teacher was my favorite teacher ever! He loves to teach and he knows what he is talking about (although sometimes he can stray off topic in class about some new scientific discovery.) Nonetheless, this professor is the one to take if you considering psychology for a major or anything else. He really changed my outlook on life.

Very interesting class, and very likeable teacher. GO TO CLASS and you'll be just fine. Read the stuff and go through your notes. One of my favorite classes, opens your eyes and peaks your interest. HIGHLY recomend this class to anyone, with any major. If you pay attention, you'll get an A

COOL teacher. everyone fails the first test but don't worry he drops you lowest grade and he gives study guide after that, if you study the guide you will do fine. He offers plenty of extra credit, i opted for the sustainble works took my grade from a B to an A. again cool teacher

one of the Coolest teachers at SMC. he is very Environmentally Aware& Health-Cautious. Practicing Zen-Buddhist & Vegan for 20 years, and an ex-toker! doesnt get much better than this! he Teaches psychology with an EVOLUTIONARY flavor. he has wealth of knowledge on this subject. please take him! he will transform your life for the better!! ;-)

he does try to brainwash his students into believeing in evolution and says religion is stupid but the tests are very straight forward. As long as you write down/learn everything he says in class you wont even need to read the book to get an A. five multiple choice tests, an optional final, and a term paper sums up the class

yes very into the environment- sometimes in class id think wait is this a psych class? evolutionary psych is a relatively new field but he's been around the block and knows wat he's teaching. clear- pay ATTN during lectures very imp.- i say take this class~

Professor Phillips is a very nice guy. He is always there for you when you have a question. I would definetly recommend him......you have to pay attention to every lecture.....nice clas.....TAKE IT!!!!

This class isn't easy, but Dave made it without a doubt the most interesting class I've taken in my life. I wish I could take another one of his classes at SMC but he only teaches Psych 1. Hands down the most helpful professor I've come across so far, take his class. You'll love it I promise you.

He tries to "brainwash" people into believing in evolution? Are you kidding? Did he also try to "brainwash" you into believing in gravity? I agree, Dr. P is a great guy, great professor.

This is not normal psychology! its much better, although if you cannot adapt to this class, you're screwed. The book is crucial, and it really isn't necessary to show up to class if you study well with the book. He never takes attendence. Very helpful and clear, and gives study guides occasionally. Once you understand the concepts, its easy.

Nice guy, however, his tests are completely nonsense. All multiple choice and all the alternatives are correct!! He says you have to chose the "most"correct one, which can be very relative a lot of the times. Very confusing!On the other hand, he seems to be generous with extra-credit if you do the environmental work he asks for so that's cool.

He is great, lectures are interesting, but sometimes he drifts off from sunject. Book is a complete nonsense - very boring, teaches nothing about normal psychology, what people are actully thinking when smiling at you, tests are hard.

Be warned that tests are very vague, but otherwise, Dr. Phillips is fair, and class is made interesting by a lot of open discussion.

Great class, just read the chapters assigned and you're fine. He does start the class with a series of lectures about the creation of the universe (not in the book), just go to class everyday in the beginning and you'll be fine. Tests are simple and to the point, all multiple choice.

Hei is really down earth guy. His six tests 6 are multiple choice and reading the book is a must !!! Taking notes is must. Be careful read over the material very closely in the book. He's one of the best. You learn alot about the enivornment and whats really going on.

BEST prof.! Informs you about protecting this planet (my future career will be in wildlife/environ. conservation so this was great). He will answer ANY questions & is so easy to talk to. He's never demeaning. Take notes, read the book, & STUDY! I took this class Spring '07 & failed it. I went back during the summer, studied my butt off & got an A!

Great teacher. Funny, graceful energy flow.his class involves alot of reading but the key is to read before class,review the summaries,study guides,and just listen to what he says. Beginning 4 chapters require more concentration and attendance, after that, it gets easier.MUST HAVE PR0FSR.!!!

Great guy, interesting material. Gives a lot of readings but I read about 70% of the readings, took good notes and passed with A-. I wouldn't say an easy A but if you don't slack off you'll likely get a B.

Phillips is a gr8 teacher. He pretty much just lechures everyday & writes notes on the board to copy down. He's alittle monotoned so keep gum/drink handy. He helped me open my eyes! His test's are alittle hard if you barely study. Gives extracredit watchout for sustainable works lots of work for a club. All around vegan hippie. Must take 4 Psych 1

lets see. tests on about 4 chapters at a time. Gives you a study guide that has about 35 questions for EACH chapter. theyre not easy. i would'nt recommend to anyone lazy AT ALL!lectures were interesting to me, but reading took up A LOT of my time especially with the study guides and i still ended up with a B which was disappointing. cool guy though

Thought he was a little weird at first, but he grew on me. If you're not interested in psych and you're just taking it to get some units out of the way, probably want another professor. A LOT of reading, notes, and studying.

Very good teacher!! he gives great lectures which are very interesting and will answer any questions. He makes a lot of jokes and you will love him. Hhe gives tests after each 4 chapters and before that he gives out a review sheet and all those questions will be on the test so make sure to ask questions in class. take him!!

He's a good teacher, he gives interesting lectures...but he involves WAY too much of his own opinion on matters irrelevant to psychology and when I called him on it I thought he was going to run away and cry. He tried to form HIS opinions into test questions and I couldn't take it. Way too political...if you're into that, you won't have a problem.

TAKE THIS CLASS!! EASILY one of the most interesting classes I have EVER taken, not too mention Phillips is one of the MOST interesting people you'll ever meet. He lectures a lot, but you hang on to every word he says. I learned more in this class than I have in the past year. Only use textbook for studying, pay attention and you'll do fine.

Easily one of the best teachers I've ever had!Class discussions were stimulating and engaging. Textbook is a good read. Be sure to pay attention to lectures, even though most of the test comes from the book, tests on some things that are only in lectures. Cares about his students and,in his words doesn't "want to add stress to anybody's life"

Phillips is a pretty laid back type of guy. Tests are multiple choice and from text or lectures. Some q's u have to go to his class for. He gave us 2 extra cred assignments drop lowest grade. final doesn't affect u if you have a B or higher. no hw. just read chapters and yu should be fine.

Professor Phillips is absolutely wonderful. He extremely kind, funny, well-read, and interesting. No homework-however if you are in the scholars class you will have one 8-10 page research paper. For the 4-5 tests, he allows us to use a double sided cheat sheet, but you still need to read to book. TAKE HIM! I promise you wont regret it.

Good teacher. Laid back, really understands and cares about his subject. If you have a B, his final can't harm your grade, even if you don't show up. Only problem is he tries to push the idea that humans are a "failed species" and that everyone should be vegan. Didn't seem to like me personally, but he was a good teacher.

if you're in the scholars program, take his scholars Psych 1 class. I really enjoyed the lectures and discussions. He emphasizes evolutionary psychology, which I think is more interesting than boring old psych****

Dr. Phillips is one of the best teachers and friends in SMC and world. If you are in the scholars program, take him. The class is not so hard and he offers lots of extra credit. Don't worry if you fail the final or two quizes. If you write a good research paper, you guarante an "A" in the class. PD. Scholars, take SOC1 with Massey and Spech1 Ogata

I failed his midterm and got D's and F's on the exams. After doing an easy extra credit assignment to replace one of my test scores and getting a C on the final I surprisingly passed with a C. I truly thought I was going to fail this class.

He's soo the best prof ive ever had in my life! I really wish all teachers were like him. He is super nice, and always there to help students. Tons of xtra credit opportunities!! You will learn alot not just about the psych, but also about the world. He's amazing, simply, take him:)

Phillips is now one of my idols. You really have to read the book in order to get B's & A's on the tests. He makes you aware of the global problems concerning the environment and the lack of natural resources. He's really chill and doesn't mind talking to his students 1 on 1

Phillips is a really funny and cool person. His class was enjoyable and his lectures were surprisingly not boring. The only real issue was his tests. its really important to READ THE CHAPTERS!! His tests cover a lot of info from the book that he does not discuss in lectures. overall, great teacher and pretty easy A if you participate in discussions

I've 44 units at SMC and a 4.0. This was my favorite and the most relevant class I've taken. This guy is somewhere btw George Lucas and Yoda. Evo Psych is the future folks. Must read textbook cover to cover to get an A. His class focusses on Biological Psych consistent with Evolutionary Theory, not bogus Social Science Psych.Meet him in office hrs!

OK, so this class was not my favorite. You need to study hard to do well on the tests, which are the majority of grades. However, this is a man that wants to help you do well, all you need to do is ask. It helped me a lot to go in early to get things clarified that I did not understand, and he appreciates the effort. Ask for help if you need it.

One of the most intelligent professor you will ever encounter. He is great, his class is not easy nor is it hard, you have to study and read the book if you want to pass. He offers extra credit and will go over the lecture with you during his office hours. Take this class you wont regret it...its fun..just study..

I love this class! Dr. Phillips is a total vegan hippie but he's awesome! I never thought I'd be interested in this class until I took his. You HAVE to read the book. Don't count on your notes. We go off topic sometimes but he LOVES discussion & will answer virtually any question you have. You have to study. Obviously. I highly recommend this class

He is a wonderful teacher, he has a passion for what he does and the environment. He writes all the notes for lectures at the start of class. Gives extra credit and his quizzes aren't that hard

the videos he gives to watched have to be summarized extremely thoroughly. He tells you he wants them brief and to summarize only the main points but if you don't cover the examples as well, you will receive an incomplete. HW is either 0 or 100, so don't mess up more than once.

Tests are on the textbook (not covered in class) so you must read. This is a lecture & test class with videos that must be extremely well summed up and e-mailed to him. Worked my ass off and got a B, but Phillips is a chill and hilarious (maybe misanthropic too) kinda guy :) recommended!

In the class videos he emphasizes how brief to be, but do NOT be brief. Be very thorough or you will get no points. He believes the whole world should be vegetarian and atheist. He is a good professor overall but he is unclear at times and pushes his personal beliefs on the class constantly.

Fun and interesting way to knock out a prerequisite. Cool, easy-going Professor. Do the work, read the book, take notes during lecture, and you should have no problem. Tests mostly from the book.

A very good Professor. I never got bored during his lectures. READ THE BOOK. I was halfway through the class before I realized that I needed to and I ended up with a poor grade. But if you study enough and watch the videos every week, the class should be fairly easy.

Phillips is a good teacher. He takes a very hardline scientific approach to psychology so if you are not into legitimate hard science do not take this class. The first half was a bit repetitive but overall an interesting class. I took the scholars class. The only difference seemed to be a research paper due at the end of the semester.

His lectures are boring and his tests are hard.Plus you need to write a 10-page research paper for his scholars class.He teaches evolutionary psychology so if you are interested in bio you'll love his class otherwise it's hard and not worth it don't take him.Plus every week you have to watch a long video and write a summary.3 tests 1 optional final

The most influential and caring professor ever!! He is soo nice and lenient with all the coursework (not that there is a lot due anyway). The tests come straight out of the book and lecturers. He also drops your lowest test grade out of the 4 given.

A very interesting class. He certainly knows a lot about science...sorta like Bill Nye the Science Guy, if you will. Great lectures. The class has certainly changed my views of humanity. He's very helpful, so don't hesitate to ask any questions. He's critical of religion and people who don't care about the environment. I recommend this class.

Inspiring professor, highly recommended!

I took his scholar class and that was a miracle. After this class i have started to think about the things that i never thought before. He is very kind person and ready to help with whatever is needed. After his class i have started to be more interested in psychology. If you want to get A take good notes, listen lectures and read the book.

This man is very intelligent and inspires you. Taking this course will help you understand why you are the way you are, genes and environment. 5 exams, 1 final, 1 essay (scholars). To get an A, take good notes, read the book, don't procrastinate, and be there.

This was a really fun class and Professor Phillips was amazing. His lectures are interesting and clear, plus he's really funny. The tests are tough and based on lectures + notes + weekly Youtube videos but he offers extra credit and will drop your lowest test score. Would definitely take another class with him!

His lectures are super clear-cut, funny and inspirational. Just pay attention to his lecture, (go in details. note his word choices and how he phrases the sentences) and you will be fine on the exams because they are pretty much just his lectures turned into multiple-choice questions.

He is a cool professor. The class is not all that difficult considering I am a lazy student. Pay attention to his lectures (take good notes), watch the weekly Youtube videos he assigns, and read the text book. Offers an extra credit opportunity.

GREAT professor. He's pretty mellow in character so if you're sitting in the back you might have to concentrate harder (but hey, that's on the student). As long as you show up, stay focused, and take decent note, it'll be a breeze. It's easy to be engaged in his class.

Great teacher, his tests are mostly from the text and from the lectures. Do the weekly videos, they're easy and help boost your grade. Do extra credit, he replaces your lowest test score with a 95% if you do the extra credit, if you don't do it he will just drop you score instead. Overall, he's really sweet and funny. Likes ppl that ask questions

Class is generally really easy. I had a friend who was taking his regular classes, they're pretty much the same. The only difference is because it's a scholar's class it's supposed to challenge you so he assigns a research paper, It's not too hard. DO the video summaries and pay attention to the lecture (interesting)Read the book and you'll pass.

Professor phillips is an excellent professor and a great person all around. Although it's only a introduction to psychology course and much of it is generalizations, I feel like I learned valuable life lessons through his lectures. His lectures are completely based off the textbook with an addition of his own input.
