Very good music profesor. Great class discussions, as well as easy tests and quizzes. There are oppurtunities for extra credit at the end of the semester. You could skip every large group lecture and still learn enough in his class to do well on the tests. Posts notes on D2L and has a very thorough syllabus. Definately take him.
Phipps is crazy, he is a hilarious teacher, and he is very comprehensive on his review and making sure you know everything that is going to be on the test. Besides the hilarity he is thorough and a nice guy. Very easy class too.
Hilarious. He was really funny. The lectures are sometimes boring, but he tries to involve everyone so it was cool. The test are pretty easy if you read the book and listen during lectures. And always go to the big lectures because b/c you never know what you're missing, and ATTENDANCE. I definitely recommend him for this class. Great 4:33!
VERY smart man w/great dry sense of humor that keeps the class rolling. I personally have always been interested in music, so it was always entertaining to listen to his bizarre stories of composers' personal lives (I swear the man knows EVERY ONE of Mozart's and Beethoven's idiosyncracies!)
This man is insane. He loves music, that is clear. I'm not sure he knows much about teaching music apprec. though. He loves to give you useless facts about composers and talk about how great he thinks certain pieces are, though. He gives a study guide for the test but not everything is on the guide. He like to throw curve balls on the tests, too.
If you don't do well in this class, something is wrong with you...he is so easy!! I am still in this class right now, but I turned in my first concert report last night, and this morning I looked and I had 100% on it...and I hardly even tried! He's pretty funny too. :)
Def. agree on the dry sense of humor... think he has a thing for cats (sniper kitten). But class was easy- skipped a lot of small lectures but you wanna go to large lecture. Study guide and powerpoints on D2L are very helpful and what you want to study from. Listen to the songs for the listening part on the exam and do your study guide and easy A.
Pretty simple class if you actually attend. You can get by without the textbook. Just print off the powerpoints,go to the group class (which are usually fun and you get out early) and you will get an A. Gives 100% on all reports as well.
Easy A! Reports aren't too bad either. Just go to class and you'll be fine.
He is extremely hilarious in my book. I laugh at almost every thing that come out of his mouth. I love his lol cat fetish; just some great stuff from this guy, music app is a good one to take if you get phipps.
He has a wonderful dry sense of humour. He knows how to help you remember tons of material EASILY. At first, I didn't care much bt this class but then I immensely enjoyed it. You should definitely take him!
Awesome teacher. Funny but in a very strange way. Realizes he's teaching a 100 level class and makes the material easy. Extremely helpful.
Just laugh, the humor is dry...but at least he tries to be funny. He makes the class rather easy. A decent amount of notes-but none in large group lectures. He makes class enjoyable, even for those who are musically challenged.
Hahahaha this guy is so awkward but awesomely funny. Knows his stuff, loves the class and the music we studied. Watch out for Sniper Kitty during the exam. And for the love of God, bring your ID number to the exam.
he tries to make it fun. if you pay attention his jokes are quite funny. just laugh! he tells you exactly what you need to know for the tests. even gives you clues to remember the songs. its a fairly easy class, but boring. at first i got an AB because of attendance, but he changes the policy bumping me up to an A
Dr. Phipps is a good prof with a dry sense of humor. The class period before the exams is crucial because he previews the exams at that time. I thought I would be miserable during this class, but he made it better.
I was expecting this class to be boring but Phipps made it surprisingly fun. He's a nice guy and has an awesomely dry sense of humor, as well as a hilarious LOLcats obsession. The class is easy but you do learn a lot and Phipps is a great professor. Highly recommended!
Small lectures usually consist of him showing a few videos and lecturing from powerpoint. Large lectures are enjoyable and funny. Creates studyguides that are somewhat helpful but pay attention to little tricks. Write up on three performances, easy grader. Very funny guy- highly reccomended.
Easy class, just follow his review for each section and listen to the music and you have an A+
EASY!! Go to class because he often takes attendance. 5 exams and 3 concert reports. He usually doesn't even read the reports so you get a 100% for just turning them in. Tests are very easy.
Pretty funny guy. He gives study guides for the exams. Three concert reports but an easy grader as long as you turn them in.
Awesome teacher overall. I love his sense of humor. Gives a study guide for the tests which is nice but I didn't like writing a 3 page report on an hour long concerto.
Boring lectures. Plays a lot of random youtube videos. I hated going to lectures, but i always went to the big one that all the classes had together. 3 concert reports. Stupid, but do them on time. He doesn't remind you when they are due. He sounds kind of monotone a lot.
Easily my most favorite teacher. Great sense of humor, best at this institution so far. Covers most things in the notes so the book is barely needed. Concert reports arent bad and hes not a harsh grader. Would recommend this class to anyone
Tests are kind of hard. Concert reviews are pretty easy. Average class
very quirky. tests are decent, gives out study guides, but make sure to study stuff not on the study guide. plays lots of youtube cat videos, hilarious guy. i recommend him
hilarious. simply hilarious.
He's kind of a prick to be honest. Also, classes are super boring. He says he hates requiring attendance, but he knows that's the only way he can get people to actually go to his class. Such a boring lecturer as well. I had a hard time finding motivation to go to class ever because every time felt like the longest hour of my life.
Loved this prof and this class. Favorite class of freshmen spring semester. If you have any muscial background at all the class and exams are super easy. Does require you to attend 3 live performances and do reports but if you follow the guidelines its impossible not to get an A. The guy is also hilarious!
Hilarious! Loves showing cat youtube clips. If you have a musical background you will more than likely get an A as long as you show up to class, do the concert reports, and study a little. You'll study Boroque, classical, romantic, 20th century, and jazz music
This guy is awesome! He is absolutely hilarious and has some very funny material. Concert attendance is required (not bad) and minimum study time only to get an A. I'm pretty sure he's the only music apprec. teacher so have fun with him!
My favorite teacher at UWL. Funny, easy-going. Class was somewhat boring but it is an easy A with minimal effort.
Cool professor and an easy grader. Pretty sure he doesn't even read your end of the year reports haha. Shows cat videos before class and has to be high half the time.
He is sooo funny! He is also extremely easy!!! Definitely take him!!!! Best class ever! and I have absolutely NO interest in music!
Amazing man, he's hilarious and always keeps his entire class entertained. Loves cat videos. Tests are taken in the big group lecture setting, so you're sitting next to a lot of people with no supervision *wink wink*. TAKE HIM, you won't regret it!
Dr. Phipps knows his stuff and he's a nice guy. The information we went over in class was all on D2L, but don't think you can miss class and just study the power points because he takes attendance for points. Overall, an interesting, easy class. Recommend.
AWESOME CLASS!! GREAT PROFFESOR!! I found the information interesting, the class is easy, and you watch cat videos before every class. My suggestion: TAKE THE CLASS!
awesome teacher!! He loves what he teaches. TAKE THIS CLASS. easy and fun!
Says his "wh" like 'Cool Whip' from Stewie from Family Guy... Funny/goofy Old man with a deep passion for music. Small group always checks attendance as well as a mandatory cat video or something else along those lines.. large group - You don't even have to go to get an A. Easy class - 5 easy exams, a concert report, and attendance is your grade.
Dr. Phipps is hilarious. The first day of class you might think he's the classic boring music apprec teacher, but he'll catch you off guard with his left field humor. Test are pretty easy, study for a little while and you'll get an A. If you're up in the air about what gen ed to take, I highly recommend his class
Phipps is one great prefessor, sometimes class can get a little boring, what class isnt. You can tell he LOVES what he does which makes it a lot better. You do not need to go to class but he does take attendance somedays for points. Tests are not that bad & you have 1 big paper but its easy! TAKE! He loves cats!! It is the greatest thing ever.
He is an amazing teacher I ever met! Just one paper, but easy!
Where to start!?! Phipps is great! Has a different sense of humor that some might think is dorky! Loves music and knows what he is talking about. The class is easy and an easy A gen ed. TAKE!
DR. PHIPPS IS AWESOME! He plays hilarious cat YouTube videos before class everyday. He has a great sense of humor. I am always laughing during his class. I actually looked forward to going to this class. To get a good grade - come to class, listen, study a little, and you'll be perfectly fine. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND HIM! HE IS THE BEST!
Funny guy, easy class. Shows a bunch of cat videos and tried to make jokes. Class is mandatory and kinda boring but the tests and paper are pretty easy. Easy class for gen. ed
He's a very nice, funny guy. Class is relatively easy. Just show up and take some notes. Does a couple online tests. Tests were surprisingly more difficult than I expected, but not too bad.
Phipps is a great guy. He has such a dry sense of humor and definitely makes this class more interesting. However, even though I ended up with an A in the class, his in-class tests were more difficult than I had expected. He gives you a study guide, but the information you should know is more than what's on them. So, be aware and study!
Great teacher with a great sense of humor. The class wasn't hard at all, but you will need to study a little bit for the tests.
Hes so hilarious. The material is boring but he makes it tolerable. Would definitely recommend taking him over any other professor for this class!
He is so funny. He shows you a lot of cat videos. Easy class. definitely take him.
Dr Phipps is decent. The class is pretty easy if you go to class and listen. He gives study guides that sort of help but additional studying is required. Exams are tougher than expected.
Highly recommend this class. The class is a joke, don't even need to show up. I recommend going to class though because Phipps is beyond hilarious. Only downfall to class is you have to write a report on 3 concerts you attend during your own time for this class
Tried to make class interesting. Very chill in-class, not too much work
I didn't like this class. The study guides seemed straight forward, but the exam would have some bogus questions on it. He gave us one pop quiz. There is one 6 page paper that was easy. You don't even have to go because all the lectures are online.
Phipps is extremely funny. He'd start every class with a cat video. The lectures were kind of boring, but the material was easy. Tests were harder than expected, but still not too bad.
Only 5 tests through the semester that are all MC and 3 1-page concert reports. All information on tests is given in the book or on the powerpoint and is very straightforward. Lectures are short and don't require much attention. Only one of the tests was done in class while the rest were on D2L. Phipps is a cat lover and can be strange at times.
He is hilarious and is the only professor I enjoy listening to.
"ATFC: Always Time For Cats" -Dr. Phipps The Man, the Myth, the Legend, he is knowledgable in the subject, he tells you whats expected, so there's no surprises. Take him if you get the chance, you won't regret it.
Phipps is a hilarious man! He always references cats and makes super sarcastic remarks. Every test was online, even the final! It's an easy class. The only thing you have to do out of class is go to three concerts and write a report on it. He's an easy grader. I really enjoyed him as a professor! You WON'T regret taking music appreciation with him!
Phipps is a hilarious man! He introduces you to a lot of music but all the quizzes are online and pretty easy if you took notes. There is one long assignment due at the end of the semester, but its not too hard. Would love to take this class again! *Side note he loves to show cat videos*
Phipps sure is something. You won't want to skip class anyway. It's an easy A; online quizzes and final. One in-class listening quiz that was pretty straightforward too. A three page concert report is due at the end of semester, but isn't hard to manage if you start it sooner rather than later. This course is a great choice to knock out a Gen Ed.
Phipps is the best. He's a hilarious old man obsessed with cats and music. His class is very easy; online quizzes and final, along with a concert report. (Don't wait until the last minute to do it) Showing up to his class was something I looked forward to. You will definitely appreciate music after taking this. ATFC- always time for cats!
Loved this class! Grade consists of a few online quizzes, one listening quiz, participation (showing up for class), and a 4 page concert report. As long as you do what's expected, this class should be an easy A. Loved Phipps' attitude and humor; Phipps is a perfect teacher for this course!
Phipps is an easy A. There's one listening quiz were you'll need to be able to tell about 10 songs apart by name, composer, and era. You'll also have to attend 3 concerts and write about them but it was pretty easy and you have the whole semester to do it. Besides that the online quizzes are easy, and attendance isn't that mandatory.
Quizzes are all online, but some of the questions are tough. Only have to write 3 one page concert reports and thats basically the only grades you will receive. If you need to take an apprec. class take this one. I have an A and I gave little effort.
Phipps is a funny guy that is very knowledgable in music. He often says stuff that doesn't sound important, but shows up on the test. All tests are on D2L and he gives insane amounts of time to do them (3 hours for a 40 question test). I would strongly recommend.
Funny guy, fairly easy class the hardest part is writing 3 concert reports
If you show up to class and take good notes then you'll get an A. Be aware that the notes on the Lecture slides do not contain all of the material that the quizzes are based off of. What he says is often times what is the most important information but he does get off topic easily so you need to be able to decide what is the material and what isnt
Phipps is an easy going professor who is very passionate about his work. Lectures can be fast-paced sometimes and boring at others. Required to go to 3 concerts and write a report on each of them as well as take a few online quizzes. Quizzes are easy, but pay attention to what he says. Not all info is given on slides.
Phipps is one of the best professors I'v had. Not once was I stressed about the course. His lectures are hysterical and he knows that not many people care about music that much, but he is so passionate about it. He loves cats, and would often show youtube videos of them. Grade mostly comes from final semester project of concert reports, Easy A.
Super funny guy knows a ton about music, the only quizzes were online and we're most f the grade along with 3 concert reports. Definitely take him if you can!
Pr. Phipps was truly one of my favorite professors. He is a funny guy with a true passion for music. You don't have to show up to class much but you want to just to see what he has to say. There isn't much homework and basically the course is an easy A.
Just enjoy this one. You only have to show up for a few classes throughout Music Apprec, but he basically randomly decides when to take attendance, so I'd recommend showing up for every class. Tests are easy because they're on D2L, and lectures are funny and interesting. Phipps will be one of my all time favorites, and this was just a gen ed class.
Class can get very boring, and I don't really go to every class. The quizzes online are easy and you get more than enough time to complete them. There are only three concert reports; those and the quizzes make up your grade. The class is very boring, but he sometimes makes it enjoyable. Easy A in my opinion.
You could probably never show up to class and still get an A, but Phipps is just this old man who says the weirdest things and it is hilarious, I get a laugh from him every class. On discussion days he tends to show random videos, often times they involve dogs, and it's so funny. Weekly quizzes online, very easy. Final exam was also online.
Phipps is an amazing professor! Great personality and passion for what he teaches. All quizzes are online and he encourages you to use notes! Should be an easy A. Show up just to see what he has to say!
Easiest class I've ever taken. All quizzes and tests are online, you dont need to go to large group days. Hardest part about the class, is that you have to go to 3 concerts outside of class, and write about a page about each of them, but all around the class is very easy.
Super easy class! We just had five online tests. Take this class.
I took the hardest class of my educational career, which was Music Theory. I am terrible at it and he still passed me and I am grateful. He grades easily and I think he is a good teacher. I ended up going to him for help and he was much more helpful then, than in class (bc of annoying music majors). I'm taking Music Apprec next sem. w/ him!
Super easy class. All of the exams are online and he's all around a funny guy. Even though you have to go to 3 concerts, there are plenty of opportunities to get them done. They really aren't that bad - it broadens your horizons. Take this apprec class!
This is another easy appreciation class with a hilarious teacher. All of the quizzes are online and you have to write a paper on 3 concerts. You don't have to go to class and will still get points for attendance as he gives almost everyone 100s on assignments he grades.
He is a very nice teacher and this was by far the easiest class I have ever taken. Attendance is 15% of your grade, but he gave every single person a 100% for attendance even though most don't show up. All quizzes were online and the concert report paper was really easy.
Dr. Phipps is a nice man. He is extremely knowledgeable about the subject he teaches. However, classes are boring. Also, it is an appreciation class but some of the things he expects you to understand are a little difficult for anyone not musically inclined. He lets you use notes on the online quizzes but then there is an in person final.
Overall, Phipps' class is pretty easy. 5 online quizzes, a couple concert reports, and attendance points make up your grade. You have more than enough time to complete the quizzes and everyone got full points on attendance, even though most skip. The concert reports are easy as well. Phipps is hilarious and overall, the class is very low stress.
Dr. Phipps is an amazing guy. He is hilarious and often cracks jokes or puts on funny videos class. The course itself can be pretty dry, but he makes it interesting. Take notes in class, as you won't use the book at all. Many things on his quizzes are specific to things he says in class. If you go to class though and somewhat listen, you'll pass.
I was not at all excited this gen ed requirement, but he made it kinda fun. He's very passionate about music, and makes lot of jokes. He talks very slow, which can sometimes make you want to fall asleep. Large group discussion attendance in not at all necessary. Online quizzes and concert reports make the grade, just do what's asked for an A
This was the easiest class I've taken so far. Phipps is a little quirky but keeps the class interesting. You are graded on attendance, concert reports, and quizzes. All the quizzes are online and most answers are word-for-word in the textbook.
Phipps is a pretty easy going guy with a great sense of humor! Lots of interesting things that come out of his mouth, all are pretty funny! Take some online quizzes, attend concert reports, and show up to small group lecture throughout the semester. Easy appreciation gen ed class. Very easy grader, but just do all the work!
Dr. Phipps's kindness and sense of humor is the best. If you are looking for a really easy gen ed to take, I strongly recommend you take Music Apprec. If you come to class and take notes, take all of the online quizzes and the online final throughout the semester, and attend 3 concerts and write a report on each, an A or AB is basically guaranteed.
Phipps is definitely the funniest teacher ever because of his comments and random videos. The quizzes started off pretty easy but then got more difficult. Regardless of the quizzes, it's an easy class and the concerts and report aren't that bad. He takes attendance at most classes. Easy gen ed, take it for an arts credit!
The tests are unnecessarily hard for an appreciation class. Things on the tests are not covered in lecture and most of your grade is based on the exams and a 150 point paper due at the end of the semester. I definitely thought this class would be an easier A.
Phipps is the most hilarious prof. i've ever had a class with. He knows that students are taking his music class because they have to so he's not super tough. You have 4-5 online tests that you have 4 hours to take. Not kidding. The concert reports that you have to write are not difficult to write and it's kind of fun attending these concerts.
Boring
His tests were actually hard. Most were online, but some questions aren't even on his powerpoints. He talks slow and sniffs a bunch. His lectures weren't awful though, you don't have to take notes. You just have to show up because he sometimes takes attendance.
Professor Phipps made music appreciation, a super dry class, enjoyable. He's very funny and very, very talented. The class itself is easy, I went to most of the small group lectures and zero large group lectures and easily got an A. Just take your online quizzes and do the concert report and you're golden.
so. boring. Also extremely pointless classes sometimes but you never knew when he would take attendance so I still went. I took notes and listened but when the exams hit, seemed like the questions were never mentioned. Most of them are online so do with that what you will.
He is very easy and didn't care if you listened or came to class
Dr. Phipps is so funny that I actually enjoyed this class. It's super easy, the only downside to this class (and most apprec classes) is that you have to go to concerts outside of class and reflect on them. Overall, loved going to group lecture just to see what cat video he would show us.
One of the funniest profs I've had. He is pretty quirky and loves cats but I never failed to laugh in every one of his classes. Attendance is 'mandatory'. In big group he'll have you turn in a sheet of paper with questions about the lecure and in small disc. he'll have you sign in although I haven't heard of anyone getting points off for attendance
Phipps is a weird guy, so lectures can sometimes be entertaining. He takes attendance sometimes but usually gives everyone 100% on this anyways. 5 online quizzes that get harder as the semester goes on, but the book does have some useful information if you're willing to hunt for answers. Overall a fairly easy Gen ed course.
Solid professor. Lectures could sometimes be boring but he tries to make them entertaining. He does take attendance (even in large group sometimes). A few easy online quizzes and 3 concert reports. The concert reports are an easy A.
Only graded on attendance, concert reports, and few quizzes which you have more than enough time for and multiple attempts.
The lectures can be long and sometimes a little boring, but for the most part they are fine. The class itself was super easy and a breeze. There are only a few things that are graded but the quizzes are easy and you get two attempts, there's also a 3 page paper and thats it.
Phipps is a beauty. 5 online quizzes and a 3 page paper which I'm pretty sure he doesn't even read. There's a lot of lectures which get pretty boring because he's monotone but they're all worth it because it makes the quizzes very easy. You also get 2 attempts and it gives you all the answers after your first attempt. Overall easy A.
Music appreciation with Phipps is an easy A. There are five online quizzes that you get two attempts for with a lot of time. After first attempt it tells you correct answers too. Paper is only challenging aspect of class but he is a very easy grader as long as you fulfill the requirements. Lectures are boring but not mandatory.
Easiest class ever. 5 Quizzes and a paper. You get two attempts at each quiz and after the first time they show you the correct answers. Final paper you have to watch concerts but pretty sure he grades the final paper on completion cause I didn't deserve the 150/150. Never listened to a single lecture and basically just skimmed the powerpoints
This was one of the easiest classes I have taken so far at UWL. 5 quizzes with 2 attempts and a concert paper based on concerts you watch online that I loved watching. If you wanna find specific answers for the quizzes, I recommend reading the textbook, although for a lot of the questions you wont need it. Just skim the slides and youre golden.
I took this class online and it was extremely easy! You have a few quizzes throughout the semester along with a concert review, all of which are super easy!
So easy. This class is by far the easiest class I have taken at UWL. There are only 5 tests and 1 paper, all super easy. You also get 2 attests on the tests, which also told you the correct answers. I definitely recommend taking this class.
This was the easiest class and many of the quizzes you were able to retake. The lecture I found to be incredibly boring though - I skipped through most of them. I'm not a fan of the content of the class so I found it boring. I didn't read the textbook at all you don't need it. Final concert review is super easy, honestly feel like he even read it.
Would recommend for MUS105. Interesting lectures, non-mandatory attendance. Hard to get a hold of outside of class. Graded on only a few tests and a few concert reports. Not difficult to get an A, but it will take some planning to get to the concerts (don't wait till last few weeks to do them - just go to them early and write on them later!)
I took this class in the spring of 2020. If you do the work you will get an A. There are 5 quizzes online which have unlimited attempts. You also have to write 3 concert reports which are very easy, if you complete the requirements you will get a 100%.
Lectures are not interesting. He is a funny guy, however, and will play random videos to keep your attention. You have to write a concert report on three concerts, and there are also five quizzes you must take. Relatively easy gen-ed if you asked me.
Professor Phipps is a very nice guy and cares a lot about what he teaches. The class does talk about some interesting stuff but the whole class is just an easy A. The only work you really ever have to do is show up to three concerts and then write a paper on all of them. Pretty much get an A for turning it in. Super easy class.
Overall not a bad professor he is very chill. He is also very boring it is hard to stay awake during his lectures but if you want an easy yet boring class choose his classes.
Phipps is the most adorable human on this earth. Music apprec was awesome with him, I actually enjoyed it and it was super easy. Lectures were long, but he was super enthusiastic about music and just the best. Basically as long as you take the tests and do the final paper guaranteed A with little effort.
Music Aprec is obviously boring and they were super strict on attendance because no one last semester showed up, but he tries to make it fun. The lectures are long and boring, but not horrible and he's pretty understanding that not everyone is super interested in learning about music.
I do not think I have ever had a professor who was as passionate and knowledgable in their subject as Phipps is. I only took the class because I needed to fulfill a GenEd requirement, but he turned out to be a good teacher.
RIP GOAT. MAN WAS A DAWG.
