Awesome guy, funny, sarcastic wit. Hard class though- lots of reading, difficult tests. Interesting discussions, don't fall asleep in class or you won't survive. Plenty of group work.
Pigott is not a teacher for the mediocre. I mean that as a compliment. His intelligence is right up there with Peck. If you want an easy A avoid him. If you genuinely want to learn your subject matter you will find none better at BYU-I or anywhere else.
If you are okay with only understanding half the words Brother Pigott uses on the first day, then you will like this class. Difficult, challenging, but accomplishable. After completeing the course you really will understand the subject.
At first I could not stand Bro Pigott or the class, but he grew on me, especially after I realized what was expected of me. About a 1/3 of the way through I could not wait for the next class and I learned a ton. One of my favorite professors, who is extremely knowledgable with great witt & humor.
Awesome teacher! For heavens sakes you can buy a study guide for the chapter quizes and most online quizes he has are the same questions off the guide. This is one of my easier classes, but well taught. Very Clear with everything no guessing what needs to be done. If you do your daily reading and fill out the guides you'll mostly likely get anA
I really enjoyed him as a teacher, I would love to go and just sit in on his lectures, but his tests are a bit ridiculous, I should haave gotten an A in the class but his tests have nothing to do with the study guides.
Great teacher. Quizzes are pretty easy. If you show up in class and take notes, the test shouldn't be that hard. Tips for the presentation you will have to do: Have pictures and explain why the person/subject matters today.
I LOVE Brother Pigott!!! He is a great teacher. So approachable, and really cares about making sure everyone understands. Such an interesting class. He is so funny and witty.
Bro. Pigott is a great teacher! He has a great wit and really knows what he's talking about. The quizzes are pretty easy, but the tests will take a little more studying. Also, know that he expects a lot out of the presentation. His class is completely passable if you are willing to do the work. I would recommend his class. You'll learn a lot!
I hated this class. He was not helpful when I went in for help. He can be funny, but is definitely biased towards those whose major is history. I took it as a general class, and had a tutor. There's something wrong with the teacher when I get A's in all my other classes, and then a B- in his. Don't take him!
Bro Pigott is a great teacher and very understanding and willing to help you with any problems. However, this class is mainly taught by students, if he taught more i probably would like it SOOO much more.
If you love history do not take his classes. If you have a testimony of the restored gospel dont take his classes. Doesnt have a planned curriculum, mostly showed video clips and taught his opinions which have been formed with little research and...a few of which included false doctrine.I learned very little from his classes.
Seemed more worried about appearing intelligent in the subject matter than having students understand it.
He enjoys the subject, hasn't been teaching for a gizillion years and ties interesting current events into lessons from the past. His mid-term is harder than his final which wasn't that bad. You have to cram a huge amount of info in for the midterm and a moderate amount for the final.
horrible teacher! Every class was like torture. It was such a pain it seriously was the worst class I've ever taken. He does not teach, he never helps out when you have questions and he puts enormous pressure on projects in class. I even went to get help after class and he refused. AVOID at all costs.
He's a hard teacher and his tests do not match the information in the class. He doesn't explain things very clearly and He is disorganized with grades, tests and assaignments. He knows a lot of information but He doesn't clarify information He wants for tests and assignment and He contridicts himself so you get a bad grade.
This was Developing Worlds. this class is turning into internet styled. This class is about making the student more aware of 3-world countries. With that said, he is a little into himself, and turns class discussions into his own time to show off his knowledge of a country. He does put a lot of emphasis on the projects, but they're not that bad.
History can be hard no matter who you take it from, but Bro Pigott is not that bad. You just haven't had some of the other history professors to compare him with. His class was easier than most, and he will give you a higher grade in the end for making a good effort(talk in class) He is reasonalbe. I am a history major with 70+ credits, believe me
I had him for International Foundations - Developing World, my worst class ever. Do not take from Brother Pigott. He is rude and does not teach, he only talks about and brags about what he's done in 3rd world countries, his documentary, and the country of Bhutan. Almost all of your grade is based on roup projects, which he decides your part. points
I had him for Internatinal Foundations - Developing World. He seems to care more about Africa than he does his class. I dreaded this class.
The subject matter is interesting enough, but he doesn't always do that great a job at presenting it. You don't have any tests, it's just 5 main group projects. There isn't even a final. So if you have a smart group, you'll do great. If you get stuck in a lazy group though, I found from personal experience to carry everything yourself.
I have taken 202, Africa, and Ren & Ref from Brother Pigott. He is a great teacher, if you are willing to act like a college student which includes going to class and doing the reading. You will not do well if you don't put forth effort. His lectures don't cover the reading so you HAVE too keep up on that. Test are hard but reasonable -just study
He was awesome! One of the best history teachers at BYU. I thought I was doing just OK in his class, but I ended up with an A. His tests are somewhat hard, but like I said, you will have an A and not even know it in the end... do the readings, try to show interest, and use your mouth once and a while, and you will do fine. (B+ or A fine)
Had him for HIST 202 and he was GREAT! I liked the enthusiasm he conveyed. He gives study guides and all the quizzes are exactly what were on the study guides. His mid-terms are difficult but if you just study the guide and read the textbook, you'll do fine.
I took Africa ONLINE. There was a ton of reading, but it was fairly easy. I enjoyed the class more than I thought I would.
Good guy but class was so pointless and he sometimes talks to you like your stupid. did not appreciate that and your there pretty much just to get the big projects done.
Brother Pigott is a great teacher. I remember him often starting class by watching some funny video on youtube. He keeps the class more interesting by having all the students give presentations during the semester so he's not the only one always talking. He's funny and connects history with modern times and with the gospel which makes relevant.
Enjoyed his class enough to take two more from him simply because I thought it was worth my time. He knows his stuff, is willing to learn from his students and provides opportunities for students to stretch themselves intellectually.
Reminds me in looks and in personality of Keith Olbermann. Way smart, knows his stuff, and expects a lot out of his students. Conducts class in the Socratic method... though I felt stupid if I raised my hand to comment. I fell like he should be teaching at Harvard. Love the sweater-vests!
His developing world class is terrible. He is vague on pretty much everything he assigns, and is not much help if you ask a question. Try to avoid this class
The class was beyond my skill level and I found him to be extremely unhelpful, condescending, and disrespectful.
Great teacher! This is the second class I've taken from him. He is great at teaching. If you fill out your study guides in the workbook then it really helps in studying for the tests. Also, it makes taking the quizzes on i-learn go really fast since you'll have all the answers already. He has a good sense of humor. I enjoyed the class.
The best teacher at BYU-Idaho...hands down. Work hard, do your work, and you'll leave with new knowledge and a new way to view the world! Highly recommended!
A really interesting class. He's been to the countries he teaches about so he knows what he's talking about. An easy class as long as you watch the video and fill out the viewing guide. A few group work projects but as long as people contribute it's cool. Recommended but you do need to pay attention and comment.
Bro. Piggot is a good guy but this is a terrible class. The grading is entirely based on group projects and busy work. He wants to help you understand concepts but more often he just makes you feel stupid. I would not reccomend this class.
Brother Pigott is awesome. We had readings and quizzes in between each class, not too hard. The tests were kind of hard. Just pay attention in class and do the readings!
Brother Pigott, is an awesome guy. He really enjoys what he is teaching us. His knowldge about the world is great. He is really nice about helping if you have questions. This class is a lot of group work, about 5 group projects.
Good guy but awful class. He is extremely rude and if you ever ask for clarification he makes you feel like an idiot for asking. He is extremely UNWILLING to help you out if you are failing and doesnt let you make up anything if you miss it. Doesnt care about the success of his students. Dont take him if you are EL ED major for world.civ. horrible.
If your looking for an easy A or a class where you mindlessly show up to get points, don't take the class. If you like history this is a great class and a great teacher. He expects you to put time in and learn and comment. He is VERY open to opinions if you explain well.
Ren and Reformation this is a wonderful class and Prof. Pigott will joke around a little. This class has to be one of the best experiences I have had this year. He is extremely approachable and kind. He expects you to come prepared reading material and doing the study guide before it comes up is advisable. The class is not easy but its fun.
Extremely rude and arrogant. He does not explain things, he just seems to like making you feel stupid. Loves to prove he is right ALL THE TIME!
Does not teach well. He expects you to read from the text and online sites in order to learn. Tests are fairly easy. I would never take his class if you are interested in and easy/medium level class
I took Af Hist Ren and Ref and Senior colloquium. I loved Bro Pigott Of course you need to do the readings for the class, it's a freaking history class, in college you should expect to do so. He has a good sense of humor and knows his stuff really well His experience makes the subject more interesting more interesting. willing to help students
I have never had a worse teacher in my life!!! BYUI should really find someone else to teach his classes. I hated going to his class and feeling like I had to defend not only America but also the church... he talks down on both of them constantly. He does not belong at a church school. DO NOT take his class!
I don't know what some of these other people are talking about. I think Brother Pigott is an awesome teacher and his class was a blast. Everything you need to know to do well is in the study guide. If you do the reading and fill out the study guide as you go, you'll do great!
His lectures are interesting, much more interesting than most lds teachers, likes to make the students learn and question things. My problem is that he is extremely unorganized, and doesn't know how to use Ilearn. He puts videos and tests up that dont always work. Should have gotten an A but got an A- because he doesnt know how to do his job.
Bro. Piggot might as well not even have typed out a syllabus. Almost every day he adds more homework because he doesn't feel he gave enough for the week. He constantly schedules thing on a whim with very little advanced notice. He is selfish and inconsiderate of other peoples time.
Brother Pigott is one of the best teachers in the History Department. His lectures are very interesting and informative. He knows his stuff very well. Don't try and BS assignments or you will fail. He makes you work for your grade, but treats you fair if you put in the effort. He cares about his students. Get to know him and he is a great friend.
Brother Pigott has a lot of experience in this field. So he knows his stuff and it's interesting for the most part. However, the organization of his class is very messed up. For class projects he was always slow to post the rubric outlining the requirements and almost never responded back to e-mails.
Brother Pigott is SUCH an amazing professor. His passion is teaching, and left a very successful job to teach here. His knowledge about Africa is expansive. He is over there at least three months a year. If you have objections about your grade or questions he is always available to talk. It doesn't hurt that he is known as the "Silver Fox."
Brother Pigott is very intelligent, but very arrogant. He knows a lot of stuff, but like the typical PhD believes that he is the person who has the best opinion in the clas. Good luck on the presentations. He will GRILL you in front of the whole class.
Excellent Professor. Does make you work for your grade. It will be necessary to get the reading down and understand the concepts of the class. You will go over a good deal of information. He knows a lot about the subjects he teaches, excellent class.
Definitely not my favorite teacher! Unless you are a history nerd or the teacher's pet, you will not get your A in this class. He is very knowledgeable, so he does have that going for him. He only does lectures. You have to read like 20 pages a day. I haven't taken history classes from anyone else, but i would never take one from him ever again.
Brother Pigott will help you to learn if you have a desire to learn. He is very knowledgeable about Africa, and loves when students come to him with questions and prove they are curious. But if you don't want to learn or are expecting and easy A, you're going to have a bad time. I took his class as a block class and it was tough, but well worth it.
BROTHER PIGOTT IS THE BEST PROFESSOR ON CAMPUS!!! i really enjoyed his class, if i had to choose my classes i will pick all my classes with pigott. Had him for African class and HIST 224, his class is only hard if you do not do your part. he is very knowledgeable and he can help you individually. he helped me i missed one week of his class.
A Large amount of reading, class participation is essential. Lectures are enjoyable, you will learn a lot in the class. Some students don't like him, but he is an excellent professor, I have taken him twice, I would definitely recommend.
Rough. The class is a typical history class but there aren't as many studying resources as I would have liked. THERE ARE NO STUDY GUIDES. I know that it doesn't sound bad, but when it comes to preparing for tests I really hate it.
Do your homework, read, and contribute in class. I doubt you can fail his classes but it's challenging to get higher than B+ from him (at least back in my days). Great teacher, great guy, definitely cultured. I say at least take a class from him unless you are lazy. You'll learn a lot from him. He knows how to dress, rare in BYUI.
I wish the class discussions were slightly better, but that is my only complaint. He doesn't take attendance but you need to be there for occasional attendance activities. Students have to do a 10 minute individual presentation, and a 10 minute group presentation. In addition to the textbook, you read 3 books during the semester GET THE STUDY GUIDE
Bro. Pigott is incredibly experienced and knows at least a little about everything. He makes class usually as interesting as possible and he's pretty funny too. There is quite a lot of reading for this class but he makes up for it with his lectures. If you love diving deeper into history, Brother Pigott is perfect for you!
He is in love with Africa. Half the course was changed from music and art to African culture. If you are international student get ready to defend choices your country leaders have made.
While he is very knowledgeable in his field, I wouldnt recommend taking his class. He doesnt plan for enough time for his lectures and sometimes squeezes them in for the last 5 minutes, thus pushing the class off-schedule. He isnt considerate of his students time and circumstances. He puts people down with sarcastic remarks from time to time.
Brother Pigott is a great teacher, I wasn't a fan of how the class itself was set up, we did readings and took quizzes before almost every class. I just wish he would have switched it up a bit. His lectures are great. That's when I learned the most. Overall a great teacher I would take a class from him again.
Brother Pigott is so chill. He just wants you yo show up and participate. He is a pretty easy grader, but the class is so enjoyable. He really knows what he is talking about.
One of the best professors and one of the best courses in the history department. Lectures are enjoyable. Textbook is thick, but well-written; primary and secondary readings are fantastic, often very funny. Mid-term and final are not easy, but homework and review sessions prepare you well. If you make this course a priority, you'll do great.
Pigott is a wise man. His class requires lots of reading. I took the block (1 month) and read 4 book! One group project and two tests. The StudyGuide is Gold.
I learned a TON! Taking this on the block meant everything done in about a month...I straight read 4 books! a couple presentations, 3 quizzes, and a big test. Not incredibly hard, but requires a lot of timeeeeee every day.
David Pigott is a good lecturer, makes excellent use of slides and other technology, and has a lot of heart for his subject material. Take an interest in the class and he'll take an interest in you. His travels in Uganda give him a lot of hands-on experience with other cultures that a lot of other instructors in his position do not have.
He's an alright teacher. He can be degrading to his students though. Two tests, midterm and final. SUPER HARD tests.
I have had Professor Pigott twice now and he is awesome. His classes are not easy but they are so worth it. He is really smart and pushes the class to understand the content. There are a lot of opportunities for participation and there is no reason to fall behind unless you just don't do the work. All in all, he is fantastic and I recommend him!
Bro Pigott is one of the best professors you'll have at school. He strongly believes in the difference between receiving a grade and an education and he will push you to really learn. Knows more and is more enthusiastic about African EVERYTHING than anyone I've ever met! It isn't just a class; it's a character and a perspective-building experience.
Tough class that covers a HUGE amount of material, but Prof. Pigott understands and explains in hilarious and real-world ways. Don't miss a day! You won't pass and you'll miss out on his lectures! He believes in book readings in place of textbooks. Overall, I've learned so much through the eyes and experience of someone who really cares. TAKE HIM.
Professor (Dr.) Pigott is not only one of the smartest and accomplished teachers on campus, but he is also one of the most humble. Though he makes you work for your grade, he wants nothing but to make a more educated being out of you. If you believe being open-minded and tolerant toward other cultures, I recommend this class most highly.
Don't do it. This class is sooooo hard and the prof doesn't know what is going on in his class. I took it block and it was the most memorizing I have ever had to do. He is also a little offensive and just talks on and on in class about hings we might not even need to know.
The class is fine and easy to get an A in if youre fine with doing everything yourself and learning nothing from him. He just reteaches exactly what the book has already said, so going to class is not really beneficial. He also sometimes calls out students in the class for no real reason, and is somewhat demeaning. I wasnt impressed.
I don't wear my seat belt to class cuz I want to die before I get here.
DON'T LISTEN TO NIKE- DON'T FREAKING DO IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Not today son.
I don't wear my seat belt to class because I want to die before I get there.
This class is extremely hard and makes me want to drop out of college and become a cat lady who eats those nasty Marie Calendar meals everyday.
I hate this class. He is disorganized and makes his TA do everything so he cant answer questions. We had to memorize every single country and where it was at. His tests were hard and no one was prepared. He is also obsessed with Africans which is weird and he is kinda offensive. He says he doesnt care about relating the gospel to history.
A lot of homework in this class. I didnt feel prepared for the tests at all, and I have to retake the class because the prof doesnt teach us what he is suppose to. Take a different teacher.
This class was hard and basically you have to memorize everything that has happened in the whole word since the beginning. The prof doesnt teach or care about his students. He doesnt know my name and only cares about getting a grade. I have no motivation to want to learn because of how the class is set up.
The load of work is normal and he gives "Extra Credit" I would said if I would of have spend more time studying the readings I would of probably gotten an A
I really liked Brother Pigott, he's kinda quirky and funny in his own way, but very genuine! The class was a block class that was shortened by a week, so that made it extra tricky. He even told us it was "beastly", so that should tell you something. Lots of reading, and the tests are tricky- questions are sometimes vague, sometimes very specific.
Brother Pigott is very passionate about history and is always helping students make connections to the past and to see how the actions of those in history have affected today's society. Reading is required in this class--and there's a lot of it! You read out of the textbook, and 3 additional novels. If you put in the time, you will succeed.
Brother Pigott is a great guy and knows his history but he seems like he doesn't know how to teach it well. I went to class a lot but he was very hard to understand and went off on stories that didn't have any to do with the lesson. I would not recommend taking his course at all.
I LOVED brother Pigott's class!!! 10 out of 10 would take again. I literally cried when it was over. He's super passionate about what he teaches and passes that passion on to his students - that is, if you're willing to do the work. If you're lazy, don't take his class because if you're there, you're there to learn. Seriously, learned so much!!!
We read three books and fill out study guides for them, have some reading quizzes that aren't bad and then a final and midterm. Pretty easy, just study for the tests- but they're based on the reading quizzes.
This class is packed full of historic information. Obviously, covid messed all of the cool bits of the course up. Because of this, all the homework requires is hours of reading then a quiz. For most this may be easy, but it was difficult for me and even getting help didn't end well for me. I found myself dreading this class more than enjoying it.
I took Brother Pigott because I needed an extra humanities class for the credits. I actually enjoyed the class, though the history is a little boring at times. The lectures and topics were pretty interesting and he does a good job at teaching and giving good discussions.
Probs the coolest guy I know and I would love to have a beer with him. that being said: -No rubric/direction for assignments BUT an easy grader -Lots of assignments but they're easy also the tests are just the quizzes copy and pasted (and some completely random things but 80% the quizzes again) -hes so funny -id kill for him -you will read a lot
Brother Pigott is just a good person. I took him when everything was over zoom so I never had him in person. He knows his stuff and I heard he can be a tough grader when it comes to papers. You have to present and he does require lots of reading but it is a History class and is too be expected.
My favorite professor at BYU-I. Intelligent and thorough
Awesome dude. He's uber-funny and I love being in class w/ him. Have taken him more than once. But sometimes he has no rubric so will take off points for NO reason. Literally none. And will have different names on exam than study guide. Be prepared to know everything bc he will not prepare you for that. So FANTASTIC man and funny but very odd prof
He is a great guy and teacher. I always enjoyed his class. My biggest issue was the projects and study guides. It seemed impossible to get a 100%, because the rubric was so vague that there was so much room for error. He is a picky grader, and won't give feedback. It felt like points were taken off, because there is no such thing as 100% to him.
I would NOT recommend Brother Pigott at all. He cold calls people a lot and is rude, he's not accommodating and isn't willing to hear feedback on how to make this course less horrible. Basically, everything is on paper, and there are NO rubrics for assignments, yet he is a super picky grader? It's all just super boring lectures and pop quizzes!
I really do like Professor Pigott, he is a good professor and he is tough. I think that it is a doable class that does take you to a new level. I will say that the lack of rubrics or guidelines can be good and bad. You are given creative liberty, but it is stressful to figure out what Pigott wants from you.
This professor has a messed up syllabus that is confusing and you will never know or understand what is going on. He will have assignments on canvas that are not real and the syllabus is there to confuse you more. The syllabus may say it is being done one day but he chooses to do it before then even though he will assure you he follows the syllabus
Professor Pigott is such a nice guy, he loves history, and I think he really does want his students to succeed but his class stressed me out so much. His syllabus was so disorganized, and I couldn't really look ahead to see what was due because he would just post it a couple days before. Rarely gave 100% on anything and wouldn't give any feedback.
He talks in circles and his classes are boring. He didn't cover half the things on the final.
The professor has a disorganized syllabus that often changes without warning. While the textbook is required, lectures can be hit-or-miss. unstuckstudy and study groups helped me stay on top of this tricky class.
He's great. Assignments are clear, all due dates are on the syllabus, and he gives a study guide that's comprehensive for the course. He's funny, lectures are good. There's a few in-class assignments that he'll do as attendance checks-even if you miss a couple (I did), they don't heavily impact your grade. Learned a lot-he's fair and accommodating.
If you are looking for a teacher who will treat you differently because of your major, and requires you to print out almost three dollars worth of paper to turn in assignments- then take Bro. Pigott. If you take notes on a computer, be prepared for him to ask what you're "surfing" on during his long-winded lectures that you can honestly just read.
This course was EXTREMELY overloaded. Quizzes required memorizing up to 100 African geographical points with little notice and book assignments came with long reading guides and in-class quizzes. The final had over 100 tricky questions, and there was also a 10-page paper. While the professor is knowledgeable the workload was too much for one class
This class was arguably impossible because of Bro. Pigott's teaching style. He is a picky grader, and feedback is rarely- if ever- offered, and none of it is constructive in any way. Class is an hour and a half of roundabout lectures, and cold-calling. My advice- take this class from a different professor.
