Extremely knowledgeable about subject matter, and builds class around discussion of readings. Very inventive and original with assignments and class activities. Excellent Professor!
class discussions at beginning of class. funny guy. he knows all of material...very good teacher, notes everyday, easy quizzes, two exams challenging but fair.
This man is very funny. He keeps class entertaining and interesting. His style of teaching is very effective. Just review notes before exams to keep your average up, and do the project(s).
Excellent Professor! Very Entertaining! Makes you want to go to class! Fair Grader
Excellent professor. Interesting whether you like history or not. Fun teaching style. The more you participate and focus on projects and papers, the better you will do. Fair but somewhat difficult grader, if your papers are thoughtful and researched you'll do great. Lectures always entertaining.
Good Teacher, very into History. Tries to make it interesting and fun. Only study for tests from teachers notes, doesn't typically use book other than overview in class. Will keep you till the bell. Does require a trip to a history museum.
He is a very good teacher. He has teaching skills that makes you always concentrate in his class. And he is a funny guy too. I just wish his class can be a little late during the day, not so early in the morning.
He is the best professor I ever had at NOVA. He almost made me want to be a history major except there is no money in it unless you are teaching it. He actually makes you understand concepts in history not just useless facts and dates
Very funny. Lectures are extremely interesting. His exams can be rough but study his Jeopardy powerpoint and course textbook online quiz and you should be okay. There are four exams and he drops one grade. I really enjoyed this class, save for the exams. I'm gonna miss Mr. Porter next semester!
this dude is hilarious
i dont like history at all.. but he makes it sooooo intresting! he's awsome!!! he knows alot! and very funny!!!
hands down... best professor i've ever had.
if you want to take history, take it with Porter, otherwise, you will waste your time and money in this COMMUNITY college where most teachers don't give a ****
It you hate history, take his class, if you love history take his class. If you need any credits, what so ever that are HIS, take this class. The most hard working, nicest teacher EVER!!!!! And he knows what he is taking about, Always happy, nice, willing to admit hes wrong. not that he is often. He Know his stuff. Fun lectures. HANDS DOWN THE BEST
Mr. Porter is an amazing teacher!!! His classes are really fun and he teaches in an entertaining way!! i really recommend him...he explains everything really well and adds a touch of humour to the material...very good teacher!!
i dunno where the hell everybody is getting this from! maybe he changed his curriculum but in my class, his quizzes were so hard! if on the secong quiz the highest grade is an 82, then theres a problem. his lectures are interesting, cool guy but quizzes, dont know where the questions are coming from. about half of my class dropped it.
Great teacher! Porter makes history very interesting and enjoyable. He has a sense of humor too, which makes his class even better. Highly recommended!
Porter was a great teacher. His only flaw is that his tests are very difficult and are not even remotely related to the material you cover in class. He is however very willing to help you, makes class amusing and enjoyable and is very passionate about his subject. I'd recommend him.
awesome teacher, awesome guy, really funny, 4 quizzes a semester, 2 tests, one 5 minute presentation, and either one big group presentation or 4 papers depending on what class you take with him
His class was fun! but his test were really hard!!!
he is good... and pretty good looking too!
I've never liked a professor more than Dr. Porter, he's funny, reasonable, and you feel like you get something out of the class when you are done. Excellent instructor.
BEST TEACHER EVERRRRRRRR...TAKE HIM
Very good professor! He tells a story to go along with everything, making it easy to understand topics :-)
looks like he is aways high! but class is good and easy to pass
Makes History fun, Great teacher.
GREAT CLASS, GREAT TEACHER. hilarious man, makes class really interesting. midterm was open notes. i would recommend him to anyone who takes history
If you MUST take this class on- line this is the one to take it with. He is fair and much easier in grading assignments. He is easy to work with and gives a lot of extra credit.
He gives a lot of extra credit, but, it will not help if you don't make a C on the final exam. His grading is easier. This is definetly not a 100 series class If you must take this class DO NOT TAKE IT ON-LINE!
AMAZING TEACHER! HE MAKES HISTORY FUN!!!! Just do the reading and you will do well on the quizes. Oh, and he lets you use notes on your tests! He is a smart funny guy that keeps class interesting and you laughing the entire time. I wish he taught all my classes!
This class was an easy A if you did the extra credit assignments which are field trips to museums and other area history locations, he allows a 1 page cheat sheet on the test, and makes extensive use of PowerPoint for a really dynamic over of American history. This is the best teacher that I have ever had anywhere.
This class was awesome. Professor Porter is an excellent teacher and explains the material very well. He's also a funny guy and keeps you interested in the class. His quizzes and tests are pretty easy. The only downside to his class was the group project. Take his classes, you will enjoy them.
His tests are difficult. Will not give grad info. He walks away and if you follow because you really need an answer he will close a door in your face. He spends most of his time chatting with other teachers in the hall. Does not show up for class frequently and without any notice. Your reward for paying him to do this is a failing grade.
best teacher ever. i hated history before taking his class and now i love it! he makes the class fun and interesting and if a phone goes off you get cookies. highly recommend taking his class.
he is good at giving lectures and info, but his tests are hard so need to study. there are book quizzes which are easy so read. there are projects to do in his class.
Great at Giving Lectures...Makes Class Interesting...Tests are not that hard if you take good notes and pay attention in class...the only negative things are the reading quizes he gives and all Stupid writing HW assignments he gives...similar to a High School class...but class is enjoyable to sit through
I took his class online, History 101. I havent met him, but honestly wish I could have since everyone says his lectures are amazing. His online course was very organized and I did very well on my midterm and dont know yet about my final but his class was great.A lot of work, though. We had a one page assignment due every week.Lots of extra credit
Dr. Porter is a great professor. I would highly recommend taking him. As long as you do the hw and pay attention in class you will do fine. I would def. recommend doing all the extra credit its easy, but its also on all the exams so it makes them easier.
Great professor! Took his online HIST 101 class this spring. Fairly responsive to email, but if you can't wait a day or two call him during office hours. Not an easy grader, but he will give you a summary of what he was looking for when emailing your grade (so you know how to improve). Also cool about accommodating my LD.
Excellent Teacher if you want to work. He provides everything you need and he drops the lowest test grade plus gives extra credit for the tests.
greatest teacher ever!!! explained history in a funny and facinating way!! made me want to change my major to history!! gave me a love for history that will last me a life time!!! thanks to him!!!!
Over all his is good teacher.
Great teacher! Really loves what he is teaching and makes it interesting. There are a lot of assignments, but his grades are really generous. His exams are definitely challenging, but not impossible. He gives you all the tools you need to get an A you just have to work for it.
Didn't really enjoy highschool US history all that much, so I decided to give it a try in college. Dr. Porter made it so much better! I was actually excited to come to class, he was funny but also made us work. Best prof at NOVA so far.
Dr. Porter (FYI-he likes if you use the title 'Dr.') is an AWESOME teacher! He makes History very interesting and has a GREAT sense of humor. He sometimes will act out a particular part of the lecture we're learning so it makes it more like a story instead of boring history. Tough grader by fair. Awesome teacher, I would recommend him to all!
he is a hard grader, so you need to work hard. he does not have many assignments, but make sure you do well on the midterm and final exam and also the short novel quizzes. he has extra credit but you have to get all the answers correct to get full extra credit. not that easy A
AMAZING TEACHER! i never really got history until his class, i recommend to EVERYONE!
Pretty cool prof. but the ch. readings are so boring, and you have a quiz on them each class period, but no worries, all the quizzes are posted on blackboard. Midterm was pretty hard, but he gives ex. credit if you go to a museum, and write a 1-2 page paper on it. He's funny, and his lectures aren't THAT boring, there survivable.
very fun proffesor
Dr. Porter was a very fun and engaging teacher. At the beginning of class we would have discussions on current events that sometimes took the entire class period. He allowed one page (front and back) of notes for the tests and you could fit all of your notes from the entire year on it. You'll do fine if you take notes and go to class/do the quizzes
He is an awesome teacher!!! Loves history which makes you want to pay attention in class more..
Best history professor ever!
I took his HIS101 class online. The course is outlined crystal clear from the beginning, so you know exactly what is expected weekly. Lost of extra credit available for an A. He is also really good about responding to emails. You do have to pass the final to pass the class.
Awesome professor. I looked forward to his class all the time =)
Best teacher ever, I actually remembered what we talked about in class! He makes history fun and interesting, and his tests are easy. If you need a history class, take one of Dr. Porter's for sure
Dr. Porter is the man. His classes are so much fun and you really learn a lot. The funniest part of his classes is how he wildly acts out things from the text. He doesn't have any tests at all (which is awesome!) only papers and a final paper. He opens the class up for discussion and all get involved. But, he talks too much about sex in the text.
A fantastic professor! Dr. Porter really knows his stuff, and excels at making the material interesting, relevant, and memorable. I would recommend any class he teaches to students of any subject!
the most amazing prof i've ever had. answers all questions and gets distracted easily. Love Him! however he does grade hard, so dont take his papers lightly.
I must say being my first year and all that he was a great teacher!! IF YOU DO ALL THE WORK ON TIME and DO THE EXTRA CREDIT it is an EASY A!!! Quizzes are HW that are straight from the book EASY!! Exams you get a cheat sheet EASY!! He really knows his stuff plus he is very funny :D SO you will walk out with an A+,GOOD LAUGHS and Actually learn
Great teacher, learned a lot. Quiz every class, but all the quizzes are posted at beginning of year. Must read textbook to pass quiz. Must study hard to pass the 2 tests. You will teach one of the topics to the class. A few times, he taught things that were not historically accurate. But overall, a great teacher! Definitely would take him again.
Great teacher.
Dr. Porter is an interesting and talented teacher. Not to mention, he is incredibly smart! He may be slightly difficult, but as a college professor I think such is to be expected of him. He is the kind of professional I aspire to be when I start teaching.
good teacher. he was entertaining enough to keep the class interested at 8am, which needless to to say is hard to do.
I took his summer course, and I loved it! I actually felt guilty when I missed his class or was late. Also he kind of looks like John Hamm, which is wonderful. Soooooooooooo dreamy. Awesome teacher!!! Take his class.
Hilarious, nice, clear, and a very helpful teacher. All the quizzes you take mostly each class are posted on blackboard, exams are exactly what the quizzes are and notes. There is no way you can fail this class because he puts everything on blackboard and if you do you are just lazy.
BEST TEACHER OF MY LIFE! Before this class I hated history with a passion, but he somehow made it interesting to me. His quizzes are all on blackboard so no reason to fail those. Extra credit available. Funniest teacher ever. Makes history interesting. what more can you ask for?
He is a funny guy, very chill, but alot of work if u ask me. Quiz like every class but the quizzes are posted on blackboard from before, theres a group project and an individual project too. Oh you have to read 4 books in his class but overall hes a cool guy.
One of the best teachers I have ever had. Very kind, knowledgeable, professional, and funny! Took two of his classes, and I would take another one if I needed another History class. TAKE HIS CLASS, you'll learn a lot and you'll not feel that you're wasting your time and money. Dr. Porter, you are the best, please don't change anything!
I trusted the comments about MR.David, so I took his class, but I got B, even I got some extra credits and my total over the point that I was required for this class. I asked him why I got B, but he did not replied. Don't take his class, except you want B.,
Very good teacher. Knows what hes talking about. Assignments are failry easy. However he is a tough grader. Overall entertaining class.
Dr. Porter really enjoys history, and his lectures are interesting. His power points great if you're not tired, but if you are, you will fall asleep. You have a quiz every class to ensure attendance, but attendance isn't mandatory, and only tests are the midterm and final, so do well on those and you'll be fine. You will know exactly what to study.
He is the best teacher I have ever had. He really wants to work with you to help you do the best you can. He is really engaging and funny.
great professor!! he's very funny and knows how to make the class interesting, take him!
OKAY HES A NICE KINDA FUNNY BUT IN A CORNY WAY GUY BUT THIS CLASS IS TOO HARD FOR A HIST 101 CLASS..AT NOVA. He gives a quiz every class, you can never find the answers in the book. The power point slides make no sense to me. He grades too hard for essays and there are just too many assignments. Take someone else... if u want an easy A.
If you don't like history, don't take him. I have no interest in history and although the class is easy for some people, not easy for me. There's a quiz EVERY class and though he makes them really easy because he posts the questions on BB, you can still mess up. You HAVE to attend class or you'll miss a quiz.
He's an awsome teacher, he makes history interesting and I loved his class. You can tell he loves his job and his students. There's not a lot of homework. Just 3 essay and a take home midterm and final. He's not an easy teacher he's just such a good teacher that you learn the material and it seems easy. TAKE HIM!!! HE'S AMAZING!
Best teach I have ever had. I had to drop his class bc of other reasons and ended up with another prof later. NO Comparison! He does require alot of effort to be put in, but the results are great later.
Dr. Porter is funny and super nice. This is definitely an easy A class. Those who say otherwise need to realize this isn't high school anymore and stop being lazy. His class does require you to pay attention and put some effort, but it's stress free. For exams he lets you make a cheat sheet and posts potential essay questions online. He's GREAT.
He was alright, better than my previous history professor, but he grades way to harshly. his quizzes have wrong answers on them sometimes and he doesn't know it. Not sure if he even keeps track of attendance, but you're probably better of with a different professor.
Dr. Porter is an amazing professor he interacts with the class and makes learning easy & fun. Exams are based on the chapter quiz, maps, and chapter readings. Do the extra credit for each chapter exam, museum trip and you will get an "A". Fun class highly recommend.
He really makes the class interesting but he takes to much time and then he crams all the info in one day
REALLY good professor! Lots of extra credit opportunities. Keeps your interest and I took him for an 8am class. Makes history interesting even for people who don't like it.
Fantastic professor. Makes it a point to engage with his students. He's hilarious and offers tons of extra credit opportunities. He's also very flexible and reasonable. I work 3 jobs and found it hard to make all the classes, but he posts everything to do and makes everything accessible online. Don't go to anyone else for history!
one of the best prof ever super easy a bunch of extra credit an easy A in the class and makes it fun and worth your time
I love Dr. Porter's lectures!!!! He knows so much about the subjects he teaches and I felt like, for the first time, history was really an experience and not just a book. It was one of my favorite classes
Dr. Porter is the funniest professor I have ever met. I had never liked history until now, his lectures are very interesting to learn and it sounds like he knows what he is talking about. He always has a funny comment to say. That class is fun to learn. I wish all professors were like him. His class is never boring. Dr. Porter you rock!
Dr. Porter was a really interesting professor. As boring as the subjects he talked about were, I'd never feel bored. He was never too tough about anything and was really helpful whenever I asked for help after class hours. His lectures are great. If you don't wanna fall asleep during a History course, take him, just be ready to work.
Yes, he is really REALLY funny, and he gives you a whole bunch of information about history that you never would have guess about. But you have to work your butt off in his class between all the projects and the exams his classes are HARD!
I enjoyed his class. It is hard to get below a C average- he gives a lot of extra credit opportunities, posts essay questions ahead of time, and gives you practice quizzes that have the same answers as the actual quizzes. His exams weren't the easiest, but he lets you have a front-and-back- cheat sheet and posts the maps ahead of time. Funny guy.
I LOVED Porter. But hen again his class is mostly coping one another and looking at slide shows. IF you are really truly into history. Probably not the best professor to take. It's mega easy if you have a friend in that class just get the answers from them. Its pretty much a group class everyone gives one another answers and the exams are open.
Had Porter for HIS 101 & 102 and loved him. Show up to class, take notes on the slides, and you pass. Porter himself is whimsical and he keeps the lectures lively with interesting and pertinent anecdotes. For his exams, you can use a note sheet. Besides that, one solo project and one group project. Note: HIS 101 & 102 use the same textbook.
He is the best history professor at NVCC
Professor Porter is a really nice guy and his class was easy, but if you're looking to be a history major, I would not take his class. He gives very vague notes, the quizes are all online but when you take them you'll realize he didn't teach you anything thats on the quiz! If you actually want to learn in his class, you have to read the textbook.
Major trouble getting any feedback from him. NEVER responded to ANY of my multiple emails asking questions and posing legitimate problems that i was having with my group project partners. When i confronted him before class he was flippant and offered no help or sympathy. He took FOREVER to grade projects (up to 6 weeks). WOULD NOT RECOMMEND
Had this professor every semester. makes lectures very enjoyable by cracks jokes every single class like a young kid with immature but really funny off topic things. felt like I had no constant hw gives a lot of extra credits. one paragraph for 5 points every class and 50 points for one paper after visiting a museum. Warining- tests are pretty hard
He is the best history teacher i've had! Hilarious! Attendance is important and he is that amazing. Gives many extra credit opportunities. Passing is a definably. It was 4 hour class long but time went by really fast by the way he teaches.
Really good professor. Know's everything about history. Tries to get everybody in love and doesn't make anyone feel awkward. Gives so much extra credit that it is nearly impossible to fail. You have 4 tests and 10-12 online quizzes based on power points and text. He's also a really funny guy, and he will get a kick out of you at least once a class.
Professor Porter was the best history teacher I've ever had! I never liked history in my whole life, but he made the class very interesting and it was very easy to learn in his class; he teaches history passionately and you won't feel bored or tired at all. he makes funny jokes and gives so many extra credit opportunities. LOVED HIM !!!!
Dr. Porter is AWESOME. During his lectures he likes to make it more interesting by wearing some cool tie, or making funny voice impressions, and very cool. His test are very straight forward, whatever he tells you what to study, it's literally on the test you can't miss it. I like him a lot, i would totally take Dr. Porter again.
Professor Porter teaches mainly 101 and 102, but he's a great teacher. He always wears a tie to match the lecture, and he literally tells you exactly what to expect on the test. His phone policy is absolutely hilarious and you can tell he's very passionate about what he teaches. I would take his class again in a heartbeat.
BEST PROFESSOR AT NOVA! Tons of extra credit, nearly impossible to fail. Tests are pretty easy, he lets you know what to expect on them. He's hilarious and really makes history fun. This is the fourth class I've taken with him! Highly recommend!!!
He is THE BEST. He gives so much extra credit. During the exams he lets you use eachother and notes. He's hilarious and nice and accepts late work. I would take him over and over if i could! Take him! You won't regret it!:D
Professor Porter is a very good professor. His teaching style is able to successfully portray the material in a fun manner, and he brings a lot of positive energy when he teaches. The only negative thing I can think of is the fact that he does not really respond to emails. Besides that, I would take him again for 102. He is really funny too!
Dr. Porter is one of the most knowledgeable professors at NOVA. His lectures are hilarious and he's genuinely caring. Most of the coursework like the quizzes and short assessments are all online. One thing I must say though is his exams are HARD, I would highly recommend doing the extra credit that he offers! Do them & don't underestimate the exams
NOT an easy-A class; your grade will reflect your effort. His lectures are engaging, and he has unique and fun activities planned for the semester. However, outside of class things can get difficult. There is a major group project and a research presentation. The exams are challenging and a test of your knowledge. DO well on the quizzes and ex-cred
Dr. Porter is really engaging and hilarious in his lectures. You won't be bored. You will be utilizing the textbook often, so definitely rent/buy that! My only complaint is that he takes a long time responding to emails, if at all. Otherwise, he's a great professor.
He is very very good in terms of lecturing and teaching History. He can grab all your attention all the time. taking notes is important. he gives a lot of homework but most of them are easy to do. However, he is tough in grading. he offer more than 50 credit if you do extra credit assignments.
He's one of the best teachers out there! he gives out so many extra credits and the quizzes are all online and easy and hes such a fair grader! I bought the book and haven't even used it once! his lectures are so entertaining and humorous! i couldnt have picked a better teacher than him! he reminds me of john green!!
He is an easy grader and an all around awesome professor! I would definitely recommend him to everyone.
Just ask him a question and you will see.
Professor Porter is honestly one of the best professors I have had! He makes the lectures fun and doesn't give heavy homework. Just make sure to do it and turn them in on time.
Would recommend hybrid format. He is very straight forward on expectations and gives out tons of easy extra credit. Even though exams are a heavy part of grading, what to be expected on them is easily discernable. Only one presentaion, that doesn't even have to be oral. Just turn in assignments on time and it will be easy to pass. Also funny.
Great history professor! SO much extra credit. He tells you exactly what he expects from you and Black board site has everything you need. Tests are pretty hard though, so much sure to study. Take him!
Dr. Porter is a great history professor. He is very knowledgeable about history. I can tell he has a passion for what he teaches. He is a very kind professor and fun to discuss history with. He provides a lot of resources to students and a number of extra credit chances. I would take again.
Guys lectures are amazing, he can make anything interesting, hilarious too. Not a free A, but an A is more than manageable. Take adv. of extra credit and the vast array of resources he has available via blackboard. He wants you to pass.
I loved Porter's class. He's very passionate about history so he gives amazing lectures that I actually enjoyed listening too. He's also hilarious which makes the class fun. The tests were the only challenging thing in the class, so be sure to study for them. The rest of the work was easy, just don't leave anything until the last minute. Take him!
Hes very passionate about what he does which makes the student feel a lot happier to be in class. Hes funny and entertaining.
He is a wonderful teacher, makes lectures interesting, funny, and explains in detail the subject. There is fair amount of work but not overwhelming at all. He gives you all the sources necessary and more on blackboard, he really wants you to do well.
I had him for both HIS 101 and 102. My counselor suggested him and he was great! His lectures were entertaining and he like to connect his lecture topics to current events, which are surprisingly very helpful! His study guides require you to really test your knowledge, but really help you prepare for the tests.
Excellent professor, would have gotten a better grade if I had more time to work on the assignments outside of class (I work 70+ hours a week)
My main man Porter, Homie P as I often called him in class. This man, nay this legend deserves to be the professor of the year award. Kind, caring, extremely accessible outside of class. He gives quizzes every day, but they are 5 questions and open note, easy points! Allowed me to complete the course despite being institutionalized. UNDERSTANDING
Dr. Porter is the best history professor I have ever had. You can tell how passionate he is about history (& the Dodgers). He's very entertaining and makes the class go by quickly.
Dr. Porter is by far my favorite teacher in Nova. He always comes to class with a smile and a different tie. He makes boring lectures very entertaining. Hands out multiple extra credits to boost your grade. Overall the class is super easy if you DO THE WORK. If I were you I would take him.
Took his HIS121 course and loved it!! Taking another history course with him
Talk about a class clown. Professor Porter was hysterical and he really brought history to life. He was very passionate and he loved to act out events. I learned so much from him, and his attitude towards the subject made me love history even more.
Good professor if you want to hear a good lecture, content was painfully wrong, although this bleeds into tests very little. Multiple instances where professor stated things in lectures that I could find no mention of in either the text, or in any historical record. If you take this professor, be careful what you believe from his mouth.
I love Professor Porter. He makes me laugh till I cry. He interacts with the class, and has a great sense of humor. Anyone who can make fun of history, yet still teach the facts, is a wonderful professor. I strongly recommend him for any history class.
I finally found good professor teaching me history. I never thought history is part of my life until Dr. Porter. He has good sense of humor that make you want stay the whole day. He loves Hamster and connect present and past history. I hope I can take his class, again. Thank you Dr. Porter for educating me about life!
When they say "class clown", this is who people are referring too. Never in my life, have I laughed so hard in school. Professor Porter is the best professor I've ever had. No matter what time class is, he's always full of energy and makes history fun to learn. He is a saint.
Dr. Porter is one of the best professors at NOVA, he really knows what he teaches and really tries to compare it to the modern era. He also makes a lot of jokes about history, making the class very interesting!
If I could give a professor less then 1 I would . His test super hard . He never replies to emails . I submitted extra credit . 11 Essays before they were due and he did not even grade them or give me the extra credit . I would stay away from him . No way to contact him leads to big problems . Not only an issue with me but with my classmates.
Professor Porter is hilarious and I would look forward waking up going to his class. He is one of those class clowns. He offers a lot of extra credit opportunists. His test are a little tricky but he does his grading scale by points you receive in his class. He is my favorite professor at NOVA.
Prof. Porter is a great history professor- his lectures are engaging and funny. Gives group projects without much involvement so make sure you are prepared to collaborate with your classmates. Grades the tests fairly strictly, but gives plenty of extra credit opportunities. Overall a great professor.
I agree with others--you CAN get an A in his class, but he doesn't hand them out like Halloween candy. Makes you work for it. He offers lots of extra credit. Be sure you do the extra credit because the tests are hard. He really loves history, so his lectures are great.
Porter is a great professor, his lectures are engaging and entertaining. It was a stress free environment in where I actually looked forward to going to his class. The Exams are rather difficult, however the many extra credit opportunities make up for it. One of the best. Coming from someone like myself that really means something.
Homeworks (5 question mc quizzes) are easy and answers are online. LOTS of extra credit. Group projects were easy IMO. Exams were hard-ish but if you pay attention you'll get no lower than a C on them. He's friendly and his lectures are so fun, he makes class enjoyable. His syllabus is clear. There's no reason to get any lower than a B. :)
He is such a great professor and his lectures are informative as well as entertaining. He gives a bunch of extra credit opportunities. Overall a really good professor.
This professor is absolutely amazing, I loved taking this class. Easy quizzes, slightly harder tests. Awesome lectures, like his classes are long but I genuinely didnt get bored because he teaches it so well. Lots of extra credit opportunities. You wont need the textbook too much unless its for a project. I didnt use it for anything tbh.
Mr. Porter is a great teacher and his lectures are great. He takes a topic that you may think is boring and makes it very interesting. He gives out a bunch extra credit so you can redeem yourself in case of anything. He really cares about his students and history. This is the only class I have been sad about when class was canceled.
Professor is THE best. Exams are cool just study. The homework the way its due is hard to explain but basically youll have chapters 1-8 due all on one date. Like I said hard to explain but youll get it once you take his class. Lectures were so fun. He definitely makes history interesting. LOTS of extra credit and I advise for you to do those!
take this man yo take this man. so damn funny and makes a three hour lecture easy to deal with. easy quizzes, a bit more difficult tests but his classes are worth it. wears weird ties.
So update: hes actually a pretty hard grader. Hes super nice and chill but when hes grading your work like group projects or individual project, he is like the pickiest grader lol.
Although he may be a tough grader on group projects and tests, he makes up for it by giving a ton of extra credit. He makes history fun with his awesome sense of humor! Do not pass up on taking him, you wont regret it.
Professor Porter was a very hard grader and gave little to no feedback. I would not recommend taking this class unless you want to have homework all the time, tons of quizzes and projects and not very much feedback or help with them.
Hes nice and funny. I really enjoyed the class. The class is based on two major exams, an independent project, and a group project. The group project is kind of a drag if you dont have a good group. Its important to keep up with your work, but he offers a lot of extra credit. Its also important to show up or youll miss something important.
He was very good at teaching, the tests were a little hard but overall easy course
Professor Porter was decent when it comes to teaching and giving lectures. But when it came to asking for help on issues I had in class he was pretty unwilling to work with me whatsoever. Frustrating but his class is still pretty easy and offers a lot of extra credit.
Porter was a super lit professor. NoVA as a whole during my time there was kinda mediocre at best, but Porter is shooting way above his pay grade. This mans tries so hard in his job, he matches his tie to the lecture. If you don't like trying in classes, I wouldn't recommend him, but if you are looking for a genuinely great professor, take him now.
Don't take his course if you need to take this course for credits. He teaches PhD level. He thinks everyone is interested in historical research. Also, this research is not that easy to do, unless you have an interest in researching with a group. Moreover, he is a tough grader, not only that, I have a doubt that he wrote his own rating here.
He has many extra credit assignments available and there are a lot of quizzes but they are not that hard. He is a tough grader so make sure you triple check your papers. He is very nice I feel like if I took his class in person I would have enjoyed it more.
I took his class online, probably not the best choice. He is a great teacher, but he was a little strict on grading. He is funny and he makes the class entertaining, he gives a lot of extra credit if you do the work. There ar many projects so prepare for that. The quizzes are easy but the exam is easy as long as you study, he gives study guides.
Long lectures and kinda annoying. Grades hard but gives MASS amounts of extra credit so if you do everything youll get an A even with messing up. Id take him again because youll get the grade but he teaches too much information too fast.
He is so funny and class can be fun at times but his tests are really hard. There will be questions on the test with names I've never heard of, he won't mention them in class but it's "in the textbook". So you will do well if you read and worship the textbook. If you wanna do well go to class, but missing a few classes is ok.
Dude was awesome and very funny, and he explained everything that he could very well during class. However, he didn't always get to all of the material in class, so some of the stuff you would have to find through the textbook. As long as you do your work, you should be able to get a pretty good grade. The group project is annoying though
What could you expect from a good teacher? Make class interesting? Give great feedback? Funny? Well, this teacher has all these characteristics and even more. David Porter finds a very interesting way to teach his classes and engage with the class. His arrangements with due dates are excellent. If you are taking history. TAKE HIM AS TEACHER!!!!
Dr. Porter was a rly funny and outgoing teacher. He makes it easy to talk to him. DO THE EXTRA CREDIT. It can bump you up letter grades. The tests were really hard, you have to memorize maps and the maps don't match up to the map he gives you to study. SO DO THE XTRA CREDIT. It is worth it. I would def take his class again.
This semester I've been struggling with health issues, and I take Professor Porter for a dynamic history class, so I wasn't expecting his kindness and help throughout this semester. I've had issues with LDB and had to turn in late work due to illnesses, and he's been so kind the whole time. Definitely would recommend
Very nice professor. Each class was interesting and never boring. He gives a lot of extra credit, so as long as you do them you should pass the class with ease.
Professor Porter was an amazing teacher he was one of the best professors I had. His midterms were hard but the only way for you to pass his class is by doing the extra credits.
Porter was great. I'm not a huge history person, but I was generally engaged in his class. Very funny during lectures. Remembered my interests and let me answer questions about them. Several opportunities for extra credit. Never touched the textbook. 2 exams plus a group project, so be aware of that. Otherwise, an amazing professor all around
Dr. Porter has been the best professor I've ever had. He has very clear expectations for assignments and 2 exams. Exams are a little difficult but nothing crazy and he gives clear study materials on Canvas. He's hilarious and an amazing lecturer who knows his stuff and I would recommend him to everyone.
Professor Porter's class is engaging and challenging. The tests are tough, but the extra credit opportunities can really boost your grade. I found Unstuck AI and the textbook essential for staying on top of the material.
Very good professor, He offers tons of extra credit and he is good at lecturing. All work is posted online and you do it whenever your free. Group project is included in his course.
This professor is a very harsh grader and does not allow any leniency for his students. He also does not allow extensions and only one extra credit for the whole class. He provided lots of feedback which was helpful but did not allow any revisions or any type or other remedial assignment. Would not recommend.
Dr. Porter is so amazing that I wrote more than this box could fit - look up JustPasteIt and add /bf7qw to the address bar.
Took this professor for HUM 298. He was funny and interactive in class. After his lectures, you will discuss with other classmates. He relies mostly on discussion posts and two projects; he sets his deadlines for the discussion posts due 1 hour after the lecture, so make sure to stay on top of that.
I took this professor because he has good ratings but I don't know why they're so high. He's a very harsh grader and although his feedback is extensive, he will always find something wrong in your assignment to take points off. I've never gotten a grade this low from any class. 6 page final paper and one small extra credit assignment.
This guy is one of the most passive aggressive and tough graders I have had. His course grading is basically based on the midterm and final. I took him async, so all I really can say is that he interacted in a negative way. His about me seems cool though. Not sure how his rating is so high, maybe he is better out of async.
Greatest Professor I've had and genuinely amazing lectures. He makes it likeable to be in his class and learn the material. I see a lot of people complaining about how he grades work and how harsh he is but to me he seems very easy going and he hasn't given me a bad grade and it doesn't seem like he gives it without justification either.
I have mixed feelings with this professor. His lectures are great: he explains history very well and his class is easy to follow. He will find any way to deduct points off of assignments. For a broad history class, he expects you to know the specifics of every topic which becomes challenging to get good grades. You need to study a lot to get an A.
He is really engaging during lectures so class is never boring. He does have some group projects so beware of that. The test a kind of hard, but just study and you will be fine. The overall work is not bad. Just study and do your work, you'll be okay!
Funniest and most engaging professor I have had yet. Lectures are quite well put together. Exams aren't easy but as long as you study, you will do well. There is a group project as well that is a good % of the grade however the professor has lot's of extra credit that adds up to over a full letter grade which is generous. -overall 10/10 professor
