he leads recitations for marcopoulos. he is the best! he is sooooo good. he explains everything so well. Make sure you get in his section!
He's not really a professor, but he definitely should be! Proctor really cares about his students, and makes sure everyone is prepared for the exams. His review sessions are amazing! Make sure to get him as your TA.

by far, the most caring educator here at tufts.. he is a plethora of knowledge in many different subjects, not restricted to european history.. hes extremely helpful and wants everyone to succeed.. make sure hes your TA for HST 10 and 11!
Likes what he teaches, nice guy overall.
Very slow to get back exams and papers, but, nice person and very, very helpful. Has tons of review sessions before exams and is always willing to meet to discuss stuff. Really seems to care about his students and wants us all to do well.
He is exceptionally nice and helpful. He wants everyone to learn and understand the material, so he focuses on teaching you, not tricking you. Great class.
Super guy, always kind annd willing to lend an ear, teaches a good, if a bit dry lecture. Definetly wants everyone to do well.
Really a wonderful guy, focused on teaching you and helping you to learn. He spends a lot of his own time making the class go smoothly. While he takes a bit longer to return work, it's worth it as everything he grades is fair and he goes over it several times to double-check. Worth getting to know!
absolutely amazing. there are no other words for the coolness that is proctor. impeccably dressed as well.
I love Prof.Proctor. He's professional but at the same time extremely sweet and nice. He will do everything in his power to help you understand the material and to succeed. I've taken both history 10 and 11 with him.
Easily one of the best professors at Tufts. He's very clear, his tests are very direct, he tells you basically exactly what they will consist of, and he's more than fair at grading. He also dresses like a G.
AMAZING! Best teacher I've had at Tufts, hands down. The amount of time and energy he spends helping each individual student succeed in his class is just incredible. Every time you talk to him, his passion for what he does really shines through, which is awesome to see. Even if you hate history, you will love any class with Proctor!
Easily one of the best professors at Tufts. Very nice, helps you out if you ask for it, and just loves his subject and his students. I would definitely take another class with him. Also, sharply dressed...I mean seriously, no one dresses better than this guy
amazing professor!
Proctor is definitely the best prof. I've had at Tufts thus far. His teaching style is classic (he lectures) but he somehow manages to keep all of his classes both fresh extremely informative, and he'll always try to make sure you understand everything. And on top of it all he dresses with the very highest of swag (like 3 piece suits every day).
he is amazing! yeah definitely the most helpful prof I've had at Tufts! I'll definitely take his other classes next semester!!!
Prof Proctor is undoubtedly the best professor I had so far at Tufts. He genuinely wants to help students learn, and not freak us out by giving hard grades. He's extremely helpful and approachable, even after the midnight before midterm! I really appreciate how much effort he has put into this class and his students. His exams are more than fair.
He is just the best professor at Tufts. TAKE HIS CLASS! YOU WILL NEVER REGRET IT!!!
Wonderful professor. The most engaging, dedicated at Tufts by far. Has a knack for turning what could be presented as rather dry material into a great story. If you're interested in history this class is a dream. And if you're not, you might change your mind about the subject.
Amazing professor, great at teaching and explaining. Make sure you write fast. Has weekly essays that will become part of the final exams. Optional movie sessions every week for extra credits. Amazing adviser as well. One of the best at Tufts.
Professor Proctor is hands-down the best history professor at Tufts. So engaging and incredibly passionate, and you can tell that he truly cares about his students' progress. Take one of his classes if you have the chance!
He's super helpful and very understanding. The workload is very manageable. He clearly has a passion about Byzantine culture and makes lectures interesting.
What an amazing guy. Taking a class with David Proctor is a must do before graduating Tufts. One of the most informed, caring, and interested professors I've had, and by far my favorite. The man genuinely loves what he's doing- the class itself is engaging, and interesting. Weekly essays, 2/3 tests, very manageable. Great class, great man!
Proctor is the man. He loves teaching and his students and makes the subject interesting. Old school lectures but keeps it from being boring. He's now my adviser for my history major. Knows everything about Tufts and he is, in my opinion, one of Tufts' greatest assets.
DR PROCTOR IS THE BEST! Taking one of his classes should be a distribution requirement.
This is a Byzantines history summer course. Excellent professor. Knows his stuff. Fair on gradings. Willing to help out his students and not to mention the free pizzas during his classes!
Words cannot describe how amazing Professor Proctor is-- he's everything a Tufts student deserves and more! He is considerate, patient, extremely helpful, ridiculously intelligent, and a great lecturer. Material that at first seems hellishly dry soon becomes a great story in Dr. Proctor's class. He is huge asset to Tufts, take his classes!
Favorite professor at college so far; awesome guy, really cares about students, really cares about what he is teaching.
Genuinely nice guy who cares about your progress. No surprises on exams and puts effort into grading your essays with personal feedback. Easily one of the best professors here at Tufts.
A great professor. Missed mandatory recitations and it did not affect my grade. I would go to recitations because they are incredibly helpful. Class was easy and there are extra credit opportunities. Weekly short essays and tests that require a lot of writing but all very manageable.
good quality
good class when i took it as an undergrad in the early 2000s
Proctor is a fantastic professor, his class was my favorite of the semester. He makes history interesting even if you're not a history buff. Though the weekly essays may seem excessive they are incredibly helpful when taking an exam. Overall a fantastic class, I would recommend it for anyone, regardless of your background with history.
Dr. Proctor is a great teacher, but his classes are straight history so if that isn't your thing, don't take them. What makes him SO AMAZING is how much he cares about his students. I'm so lucky that he's my advisor. He is extremely supportive, thorough, & reassuring. He is unbelievably kind and will go out of his way to help you no matter what.
I can't even put into words how much Professor Proctor shaped my freshmen year at Tufts. I took both of his European history classes and they were easily one of the highlights of my semester. He makes the material like a story and goes out of his way to goes the extra mile to ensure his student succeed. TAKE HIS CLASS - YOU WONT REGRET IT
Dr. Proctor teaches an excellent course in European history, making each class an interesting chapter in a fluid story that he presents in an engaging and robust way. He is always available for help and is more than willing to advise on all matters, whether or not they relate to the class. Overall a great freshman year experience.
Outstanding professor and advisor in every respect. He will go out of his way to ensure that you are in a position to succeed in his classes,by holding extremely detailed review sessions before exams and by providing any help you need with homework assignments. His knowledge of most every course at Tufts has been a huge help to me as his advisee.
Excellent class, very fun and clear. Professor Proctor is excellent as always!
I love professor Proctor. I have taken several classes with him and he consistently proves time and time again that he is a wonderful professor. His classes are straight forward and engaging. He makes difficult material very manageable. Professor Proctor cares deeply about his students and will go out of his way to ensure they succeed.
Professor Proctor Puts his all into making sure that his students understand the material in-depth. His lectures can be a bit boring but he is so passionate when he speaks that sometimes his passion transfers to you. Overall, Proctor is a great professor to take! His class is very writing based. He does not put a time limit on tests.
Professor Proctor is an absolutely amazing teacher. His lectures are interesting and engaging, and he himself is very kind and always there for any student that needs him. Absolutely must take a course with him,
Proctor is the man. Take any of his classes. You will not be disappointed. His lectures are awesome and interesting, and he is very helpful and flexible with exams and assignments. He also loves to give opportunities for extra credit. Most importantly, his outfit game is absolutely on point and he supplies snacks. PROCTOR FOR SPRING FLING.
protcor is literally the man. he made a science student into a history buff! I loved his class. Go to the review session before the exam and you are pretty much told what will be on the test.
David Proctor is an angel. I have taken all five of his courses and he is my inspiration in life.
Hands down the best professor I've ever had. I wasn't sure about the class at first because it's strictly lecture-based. However, he's a great lecturer and always engaging. He also gives his heart and soul to his students, with extensive office hours and exam review sessions. The class takes some work, but he gives you every chance to succeed.
Easily the best professor I've ever had. Genuinely cares about his students and makes almost any topic interesting in lecture.
I love Professor Proctor. Hands down the best Professor I have had at Tufts. He cares so much about his students and really wants them to succeed. As long as you prepare well for his tests, and given that he pretty much tells you what is going to be on the test this is easy, you will do well.
great man and easy easy class
interesting class, interesting material. Manageable amount of work
Prof Proctor represents the quintessence of the passionate Tufts professor. A triple-jumbo, he is always, always there for you (holding office hours at 11pm if necessary), and holds all recitations himself. He is flexible and truly cares about his students and their learning. As long as you put effort in the class you will get an A. The man.
Literally the best Professor at Tufts. Made me a history major.
I mean, this is David John Proctor. I don't know if there is anything left to say. He is a must-take for anyone at Tufts, regardless of whether you're planning on studying history or not. Just show up and listen to him lecture, he tells history like its a story book, and remains engaging the entire semester. Don't miss out on a djp class, please.
Amazing professor who really wants his students to love his classes. If I can take all the classes he teaches at Tufts, then I will. He is the best.
Professor Proctor is an amazing Professor. Might be possible to coast and get a solid grade, to get a great grade in the course does require some hard work and effort. Professor Proctor is clear about the best ways to put in effort, though, and his lectures are extremely clear and informative as well. Great Class and Amazing Guy
Best prof at Tufts. Truly cares about his students
He was the best professor I've ever had at Tufts!! He genuinely cares about his student's success and honestly bends over backwards for them. The lectures weren't mandatory but he is such a good lecturer I actually enjoyed going to class. There was a lot of reading, but all of it was useful information that complimented the lectures.
Prof. Proctor is one of the most respected instructors at Tufts and it's easy to see why. His lectures are engaging, he's friendly and approachable, and he offers opportunities for extra credit. If he has one flaw it's punctuality, but at least if you're running late for class, he might be too. He's also one of the best-dressed men on campus.
What a man - Dr Proctor gives out extra credit, candy, cookies and office hours like nobody's business. He cares, for sure. His lectures are optional, but very comprehensive. But this class is too broad a survey, and too focused on W Europe/Christendom. Would rec as a class for non-majors, but take another course if you're looking for depth.
Good class with depth if you attend lecture and recitation. Class can make you think and reevaluate. Good for majors or nonmajors.
Good course, interesting material. Great opportunities for discussion.
Really liked this class. I am an IR major and the class proved really useful when I took Intro to IR. Proctor cares about his students and wants to help. Looking forward to another class with him next semester.
The best. Simple as that. I will likely be majoring in history because of his inspirational teaching. All lecture, but they are very interesting and I was not bored for a second. Tests are essays and also a short essay given on average every 2-3 weeks. Most accessible professor. Always willing to help. Didn't use text book for 1/2 class still got A
A truly caring professor who looks out for his students. He makes himself very available to talk so you can always have your questions answered. Listen to the feedback from the weekly essays and incorporate those into your future essays. As long as you show up and make an effort you'll be alright. Lots of reading but it really helps if you can.
Proctor is an amazing man and professor. He is extremely caring and helpful and is willing to do anything to help you succeed. There is a response paper every week, which takes up a lot of time, but if you put in the work you will get a good grade. For Europe to 1815, though, the readings were not necessary.
Great class, good guy. Work hard, keep up with the reading, go to class, think, and you will do well. Not a history person but I really had fun in this class.
The best. All lectures. which are engaging and interesting. Fairly easy essays and tests.
He is an angelic human being. He is crazy smart & is a walking textbook (he knows EVERYTHING down to the smallest detail). His lectures are great & never boring. He is very accessible & wants to see you succeed. Plenty of extra credit provided. Weekly essays but not hard. Tests are fine as long as you study bc he says what will be on them. 12/10
A challenging course that makes you read and really think. Proctor does not spoon feed you anything in this course, he organizes the readings well, he guides you, but you have to engage in the material to get the most out of it. Enjoyed learning about women in Byzantium and how different their lives were, but so similar in some ways too.
Nicest guy. Give the notes. Very flexible with turning papers in late. Really wants to see students succeed. Tests are solid if you prepare for them.
Good class and professor. Fair grading and lots of items to be graded on. Interesting lectures and discussions.
This class, while sometimes interesting, is too much effort for what it's worth. Proctor is a good lecturer, but his expectations are set too high for a manageable workload. He assigns weekly papers that can easily reach 8 pages long and his exams can last several hours (It took me 5 hours on the first midterm and there are 3 of them).
proctor is a true gem- he cares so much about his students and is pretty flexible when it comes to essay extensions. he makes his lectures very interesting! would def recommend.
David John Proctor is by far the most respected and well known Professor at Tufts. He is an adorable man that thoroughly cares about his students. There are a fair amount of papers but he doles out so much extra credit, and genuinely cares for the well-being of students. Every Tufts Student needs to take the class, he hasn't left since 1992.
TAKE A CLASS WITH PROCTOR! I'm a pre-med but I absolutely fell in love with history in this class (definitely a highlight of my semester). He genuinely cares about his students and goes out of his way to help you to perform at your highest potential. The weekly essays may seem like a lot of work but it's totally do-able. Proctor is simply the best.
Amazing lecturer, very passionate, very easy to contact, anyone can get a good grade.
Great Professor who really wants his students to succeed. Difficulty is a 5 if you don't put in the work but if you do it's an easy A. Would highly recommend.
Very smart and caring, but lectures were boring. Do the work and you'll get an A.
David Proctor is an icon. The most caring, understanding, and helpful professor I've ever had. Also, the best dressed. Class is a lot of work but he and the TAs aren't particularly hard graders and he's more than willing to help!
Professor Proctor is one of the kindest, most approachable, and intelligent teachers I have known. He has such a large span of office hours and is great at making what he teaches interesting. In addition, Professor Proctor frequently holds open events for his students and is all around an integral piece of what makes Tufts great. Take his classes!
The most accessible and phenomenal professor at Tufts. If you pay attention in class to his riveting lectures, you will do well. He gives every opportunity to his students so that they succeed, and is a passionate expert in his field. Highest recommendations, and every Tufts student should take his classes, which are easy to exceed in, & will enjoy
I am the opposite of a history fan but Proctor makes this class super bearable. He is a GENIUS, always available to help, offers a tonnnn of extra credit to help boost your grade. Most ppl say this class is super easy.. but for me, a STEM major, I hate reading and writing, so it has definitely been a huge time-consumer for me
he's the best. take all of his classes
Proctor is awesome. From tons of extra credit to multiple four-hour review sessions to prepare for exams, he does everything he can to help you get a good grade. Always available, I've never had a professor who clearly cared so much about each and every one of his (hundreds of) students. A remarkable man and a total legend. Lots of papers though.
Both Europes and Byzantines are dope and not hard, and good attendance visibly makes him happier. Most caring and student oriented professor at Tufts and puts in more hours and heart than any teacher ever. Fundamental to anyone's time at Tufts is one of his classes.
Prof Proctor is the best prof that I have ever had. He is kind, caring, and always there for his students. He holds extensive office hours, offers essay feedback before papers are due, and records and gives in-person review sessions before exams. His lectures are intriguing and it is obvious that he is very passionate about his study of history.
Fantastic Professor. Always available to help you out and more than understanding about deadlines and the stress of college. Definitely one of the best professors I've ever had.
Proctor is one of the best teachers I have ever had. He cares about his students and is passionate about teaching history. He and his TA's are available for outside help with papers and he has extra credit movies once a week at night. He gets sick bc' he spends so much time helping his students. He is very knowledgeable and is a great person.
Taking a class with him was one of my highlights of freshman year. His lectures are interesting and extremely thorough and if your lecture notes are good enough you wont need more information for essays. His class was a lot of writing but it was graded fairly, even a bit leniently. I got extra credit for watching history movies and eating pizza.
Amazing professor and person; I thoroughly enjoyed his Byzantine class. While there is a lot of reading, it's supplemental to the lectures (he's a good lecturer) and provides good sources to use in your homework or exam essays. He really gives you everything you need to get an A -- you just have to meet him halfway. Recitation is mandatory.
I absolutely loved this class! I thought Proctor's lectures were incredible and the books he chooses are really interesting. There is definitely a lot of reading (300-500 pages per week) and class discussions and journals for each reading with 2 large papers and a final paper/project. Definitely a lot of work, but overall, it's worth it!
Proctor classes are the easiest A's you will ever find. You don't even have to attend lecture to do well in the class. For the exams, you essentially just regurgitate Proctor's lecture notes, which he shares with you before the exam. On top of that, he gives you plenty of extra credit opportunities, like his movie nights.
Professor Proctor is one of the best professors you will find at Tufts. He is incredibly caring and passionate and his class is not very difficult. He also offers tons of extra credit including showing up to his movie nights where he buys you pizza. Definitely worth taking a class with Proctor
As a junior at Tufts, I had spent three years hearing about how amazing Proctor was and did not think he could live up to the hype. He did. He goes out of his way to make European history interesting and relevant, to make material accessible and to provide students with every opportunity to succeed & become better writers. Take Europe Since 1815!!
Proctor really wants every single student to earn an A. Gives many extra credit opportunities, including movie night with free pizza and extra credit if you show up to most of the classes. If you listen to all of his lectures you should be able to skip most of the readings for the essays. Tests are extremely fair- he gives the prompts beforehand.
Proctor is an angel. People take advantage of his generous exam times, plentiful extra credit and him going out of his way to meet in office hours (and often reward extra marks in going through exams with you). he is the best, take him if you can in your time at tufts.
Just an awesome guy. A guaranteed good grade, and you will learn a lot too! Can't recommend enough
You probably don't even have to bother looking up reviews; Proctor is simply the best. He is so clearly dedicated to students and gives amazing lectures. He gives plenty of extra credit and is flexible on due dates and exams. He just wants everyone to succeed and makes his class an enjoyable part of your semester rather than a stressful one.
David Proctor was probably the best professor I've had at Tufts. His lectures are amazing, although he gets stuck in the rut on topics he adores, such as the Byzantine Empire, which made for lots of catching up to do later in the semester. 3-4 page papers assigned weekly are the only time you need to use the textbook. Lots of extra credit - Easy A.
David Procter is one of the "must-take" professors at Tufts. His class is well organized and the grading is fair. He tells you what you should expect on tests and is very helpful during the extra help sessions. There are also many many many extra credit opportunities. Basically, as long as you try, you will learn a lot and get an A.
Every good thing people say about him is true.
Amazing guy, great lectures, passion for teaching and helping students
Proctor absolutely lives up to the legend. It's abundantly clear that he deeply loves teaching and cares for his students. One of the kindest, most knowledgeable and approachable professors that I have had in my entire life. He could teach a class about paint drying and it would be good. Writing-heavy but ample feedback and opportunities to discuss
Proctor is such an awesome professor! There are essays basically every week but if you take good notes in class they are super easy to write. On the syllabus, there is a ridiculous amount of homework listed each night but I didn't do it once and I got an A. He is such a sweet guy and offers so much extra credit and ways to de-stress. A king!
Professor Proctor is very generous and gives lots of opportunities for extra credit. With that being said, this class is by no means easy. If you want an A, you have to work for it, do readings and pay attention to lectures. There are a lot of papers assigned throughout the semester but he is generous with extensions. He is always ready to help.
Professor Proctor is a Tufts legend! Do not think twice, take a class with Proctor and you won't regret it. He is very caring for his students and accommodating. Gives very interesting lectures and great feedback. There are many essays but the information for these is explicitly given by Professor Proctor during lecture and recitations. The best!
Professor Proctor cares about students more than any other professor I've had at Tufts, and he doesn't sacrifice the quality of education in doing so. He gives so many extra credit opportunities that it is impossible to do poorly unless you try to do so on purpose. My advice? Meet with him before a paper is due and he will tell you what to write.
Professor Proctor is great but I didn't enjoy the class. You need to write a ton of essays (we had 7) on top of the 3 exams, and I've heard there are usually more. However, he's super accessible with office hours, extra credit, and essay extensions. If you like history, you'll enjoy this class! If you don't though, I would skip it.
Showed up 10 min late to every class and recitation which was very annoying because this was my only in-person class this semester. Extremely late feedback on papers and exams. Lots of papers, but there are opportunities for extra credit. Good lectures, but went into great detail about small topics so we were very behind for the whole semester.
It's a typical lecture style class that is info-heavy because Prof Proctor knows a lot. Prof Proctor cares a lot for his students though and wants you to succeed. There's a lot of essays but they keep you on track (don't bother reading everything) and the exam review sessions cover everything you need to know. Grading is lenient.
Prof Proctor is the most caring and passionate professor at Tufts. He genuinely cares about the wellbeing and success of his students. There is a lot of writing for his class, but pay attention in class and listen to review sessions, you'll get an A. He is so helpful in office hours and accommodates the unique needs of each student. A real gem!
He's honestly the best professor I have ever come across. Everyone needs to take a class with him before graduating. Professor Proctor is a gem.
Prof Proctor is a very kind man. He wants to help students succeed. If you show up, even if you don't participate more than you have to, and you actually write the essays, you'll do well. He's an easy grader, and it's really easy to do extra credit. That being said, his lectures were very boring and he assigned mountains of reading every week.
Proctor is so nice, and he really tries to help his students.
Professor Proctor makes the zoom lectures fun. He also changed my view on history, in a positive way of course.
Everything said here is true - Proctor is extremely caring and kind. I will say that his lectures can be a little dry because he mostly reads off lecture notes, but his little 'asides' throughout the lecture are fantastic. Don't spend TOO much time on the weekly essays - grading is usually very loose on those - but don't botch them either.
No need to do readings regularly, just in advance of exams and papers. Proctor is the most caring, hardworking professor and I have no clue why there's no statue of him on this campus because he's incredible. So nice and is such a character, explains the history very well and fun to learn from.
Proctor is. GEM. Please take at least one course with him before you graduate. He is incredibly smart and sweet and a reasonable grader. His exams are long but his review sessions go over EVERYTHING you need to know. Don't think twice. Add his course to your cart :)
Everyone seems to love him but for me, he was quite frustrating to deal with as a professor. We had so many papers, none of which were graded in a timely fashion. Final grades were even put up later than the university deadline. His lectures are long and boring and he does not respond to emails well.
Proctor cares about his students. Sometimes things took time to get back but he read through everything himself while teaching multiple lecture classes. He's engaging, hard-working, and wants students to succeed. He will work with you to give you the best experience he can and help you when you need it. He won't ask you to work harder than he does.
Dr. Proctor's breathtaking commitment to his job and students nearly brings tears to my eyes. G.O.A.T.
Incredible person. He wants everyone to get an A and gives everyone the opportunity to do so. There is a lot of reading, however, it is not necessary to succeed. There are also a lot of papers, but if you follow directions you will get a good grade.
Cares for his students so much: how well they understand the content, how they're doing with assignments, their opinions, and just generally how they're doing. I firmly believe he deserves a statue at this school for everything he does and his incredible knowledge and passion.
I've taken three courses with him now (over two semesters), and I can say that he is truly one of the best teachers you could have. His lectures are as informative as an encyclopedia but still as engaging as a TV show. I highly recommend his Byzantine empire course. I don't think I've met anyone that didn't like him.
Professor Proctor is the most amazing and caring professor ever. I'll admit he has long lectures and many essays, but you will learn so much regardless of your major. He is accessible and truly wants to see his students succeed. He is the only professor I know that goes above and beyond for his students.
Professor Proctor was amazing. Best professor on campus. Knows his stuff and gets excited about teaching it. Really a homie when it comes to needing extra time or extensions. Lots of reading and writing but easy grader and not a hard class to do well in.
Proctor is literally the GOAT. Hes so kind. Yes the readings are a lot, but he is very understanding and even told us at the beginning of class that it was okay if we couldnt get through them all.
A bit old fashion but wonderful professor. Nearly weekly papers, however he gives plenty of extra credit and extensions if needed. Always available through emails, office hours, and TAs have plenty of office hours too. Was nearly brought to tears over his description of Nazi Jewish Policy. Great lectures.
Professor Proctor is a gem at Tufts. He is extremely intelligent and cares deeply about the learning of his students. Proctor is one of, if not the most, popular professor at Tufts. Hundreds of students take his lectures every semester. He goes above and beyond the average professor to assure his students succeed. Greatest professor @ Tufts.
Proctor genuinely wants you to succeed. His lectures are entertaining and has office hours every weekday. Yes the reading and papers can be overwhelming but with the no-questions-asked essay extensions and the fact that you can get away with skipping the readings means this class will not bury you in work. Goated professor, take his class!
He's simply the best, take any class he offers if you can.
Everyone loves Proctor. IT's so true.
Proctor is almost universally admired, and rightfully so. He is truly caring, understanding, flexible, and kind. At the same time he has reinvigorated in me a passion for certain parts of history. Proctor is simply amazing.
Professor Proctor is a true gem. I have always been fascinated by history and Proctor's class only heightened that. He's incredibly kind, caring, and truly cares about the well-being of his students. He's definitely my favorite professor I've had so far at Tufts. If you can take a class with him, do it, you won't be sorry.
Professor Proctor is the most understanding, kind professor I have ever had. He truly cares about all of his students and does not hesitate to do anything he can to help. He is clear about his expectations for papers and exams, and it feels like he truly wants his students to succeed. An overall amazing person and professor!
Proctor is an amazing lecturer and person. The weekly essays were very good at making sure we understood the material. However, I really disliked the tests for this course. They required 2-4 hours of time and were based off of memorizing an entire essay and putting it onto paper. Everything else about the course was excellent.
Proctor is really the best professor I've encountered so far at Tufts. Extremely caring + understanding. Many papers but graded very fairly and many extensions provided. Proctor truly wants every one of his students to do well, and he has such a big heart. There's a reason why he's so respected and loved at Tufts. Take this class if you can!
Proctor was honestly the best guy. He lectures like he is telling you the most interesting story. He honestly cares so much about his students, he is very responsive. He isn't a super harsh grader and makes it a point to make sure everyone can do well in his classes. He gives a lot of review material for tests and comments for essays.
He is amazing and he really cares.
Best Professor at Tufts. I recommend everyone take a class with Proctor at least once while at Tufts. He genuinely cares about his students and will go above and beyond for you to succeed in his class. Lectures are so interesting and well presented. While exams can be long, he will make sure you are extremely prepared for them.
best professor and advisor at Tufts
There is nobody who is more devoted to his students than David J. Proctor. He is a brilliant professor and historian, and he goes above and beyond for his students to succeed. Put your best foot forward and you'll get an A. He is the crown jewel of Tufts' History Department and the best professor I've ever had. I am lucky to have him as my advisor.
DJP, what a LEGEND! His lectures are fascinating & his knowledge of history is mind-bogglingly extensive. I would be amiss if I did not also mention that he is by far the classiest, best-dressed professor at this institution. I looked forward to seeing which fits he would wear to each class, my personal favorite being the CHEVRON three-piece suit.
He is literally the best professor ever, SO KIND and thoughtful.
If you need humanities credit, definitely take one of his classes. Very caring, knowledgeable, and passionate about what he teaches (can be information overload sometimes, though). Took him over the summer and we had to do three essays and a bunch of discussion posts. Provides helpful feedback and lenient when it comes to deadlines.
A lot of writing but Proctor is super flexible on due dates. Teaches his own recitations which I appreciated. Goes over material well and concisely. Tests are long but because there's no time limit. Overall best professor I've had at Tufts.
Nothing that hasn't been said before, he's just an amazing guy. Helped me get into one of his other classes as well and clearly just loves being here. Never seen anyone put as much effort and care into teaching as this man.
Proctor gives a lot of papers and his exams are hand-written, but he's not a harsh grader at all, and besides, that pales in comparison to just how much he cares about his students. He genuinely wants everyone to succeed and does his best to make sure that they do. He's a great lecturer, too. All around best professor I've had at Tufts.
This was True Beliver. It was a nice, easy class. But, I didn't love it.
This was my second class with Proctor and wow I love this guy. He's so passionate and sweet and genuinely wants every single student to succeed. Best professor at Tufts hands down.
Prof Procter is absolutely amazing, everyone should take one of his classes. The lectures are very content heavy, but he tells the information like a story which had me interested the whole time. He also posts his lecture notes which is very helpful. There's a lot of essays, but they are very manageable. And the exams are not too bad
The workload is certainly heavy, tests are long and tedious, and certain TAs are stricter graders than others, but there are many extra credit opportunities and his lectures are very captivating. Proctor is truly Tufts's best. He stands out from other professors thanks to his genuine kindness, sharp wit, and unparalleled devotion to teaching.
Proctor is hands down one of the best professors! There is a fair amount of work but he makes it so easy to do with access to detailed lecture notes, and there are so many extra credit opportunities that make it hard not to do well in any of his classes
Best professor at Tufts! There is a fair amount of work to do, but if you do it you will do well in the class.
Awesome teacher, great person as well.
It's Proctor. Get ready to read, but he's amazing
VERY nice and accessible gives out infinite extra credit engaging lectures, clearly passionate dont take if u hate writing or memorization 3 big tests, basically memorize handful of essays by heart not all textbooks necessary, ask upperclassmen MANY essays, almost weekly usually TAs chill and they grade ez, but not always recitations MANDATORY
I won't lie, the material was extremely boring to me, but Proctor made up for it by being extremely caring and approachable outside of class. Need an extension? You got one, no questions asked. There's a lot of writing, but it doesn't need to be good writing. Exams are on paper, which sucks, but that's really my only complaint for this course.
Provides a very interesting perspective on history and made the topic much more interesting than I anticipated. Gives students very many chances to get extra credit and is very flexible with due dates. Only issue with the class was how essay-heavy it was. Overall the most student-friendly professor I have had thus far.
A God among men. One of the most caring educators I have ever had. Lectures never disappointed. A moderate amount of essays but deadlines are flexible and the prompts are straightforward. Exams extensive but quite simple. Long story short: if you care at all, you'll do well and enjoy the class. If you don't, that's not Proctor's problem.
super easy course and he really cares about his students! definitely take his class if you can
Amazing prof who is caring and lenient with grades and deadlines. Lots of essays but they are very easily graded. There are 3 exams (2 midterms and 1 final) and they are 2-3 hours, handwritten-essay based, but are graded easily. Be warned Proctor will be late to class and will take a while to grade things. Overall a super easy humanities credit.
The absolute man!!! Love Proctor! He is the most caring professor/teacher ever, and he is the definition of a mentor and passionate educator!
He is the best for a reason. Will do anything he can to make the load easier on you. TAKE A CLASS WITH HIM
Super flexible with deadlines and office hours. Don't do the readings, only skim for evidence to use in your paper. A LOT of writing (8+ essays and 3 LONG exams). You will get an A for doing the work, they are super nice graders and lots of extra credit. He rambles in lectures and if you're not interested in Byzantine it was really boring.
TAKE A PROCTOR CLASS. He's so engaging and really cares about what he's teaching. He's an easy grader if you work hard, and he wants every single one of his students to succeed and love his class. There's a lot of reading and writing, but essays prepare you well for exams. So supportive and hilarious. He's an all-around baddie.
take proctor
If 6 was a scale, I would rate Proctor a 6. I can't emphasize how much I enjoyed his class, from the amazing and funny lectures to his accessbility outside of classtime to his very lenient grading system. There are a lot of essays, but aren't graded harshly at all and only make up 10% of your entire grade + extra credit. TAKE A CLASS WITH PROCTOR!!
One of the smartest professors I've ever had. While most academics are very erudite, Proctor is on another level. He is able to lecture on just about any topic and provide very specific detail without needing to look back at his notes. He is also the kindest and most genuine guy and he really wants you to succeed. Workload is heavy but very doable.
He's brilliant. Pure excellence. The class requires quite a bit of writing, but the grading is very fair and Proctor gives many extra credit opportunities to make sure each student does well. He is a very charismatic lecturer and he truly knows how to make class entertaining. What a privilege to have a professor like him. His classes are fantastic.
Proctor is a phenomenal professor. His kindness is unmatched and his knowledge of European history is very impressive. However, I will note that one of the TAs was unnecessarily harsh when it came to grading papers and responses. Otherwise, this class was an excellent experience, the workload was fair, the lectures were interesting and informative.
Professor Proctor is a very kind soul. Lots of papers and writing (exams take 2-3 hrs and are handwritten) but grading is lenient. Many EC opportunities with optional essays, just coming to class, and watching movies. Definitely take this class if you are into history bc he is a great lecturer and I found the Byzantine Empire to be fascinating.
Proctor is a fantastic professor! His lectures are captivating: I never had trouble paying attention in every class. Be aware that there are many essays, and the exams are all handwritten and take several hours to complete. Nevertheless, his course has been one of my favorites of all time. Make sure to take any course that he teaches!
Great guy and wants you to succeed, but the truth is the class is just so boring. He lectures at you for 75 minutes with 0 engagement, and the tests are abysmally long (4 hours of straight essay writing, 5 on the final), to the point where I get cramps and would rather take an SAT. You will get an A but its not fun. Also, he grades nothing on time.
Proctor is undoubtedly one of the best professors at Tufts. He's an excellent lecturer and is clearly passionate about the content as well as his students. There's a fair amount of discussion involved and being proactive will help your grade. The class is graded off 3 papers and around 9 discussion posts (which can be annoying). Highly recommend!
Professor Proctor is an engaging lecturer who makes the Byzantine Empire really interesting. The workload is heavy, with lots of writing, but the grading is lenient, and there are plenty of extra credit opportunities. unstuck AI was a lifesaver for exam prep.
Lectures are a bit boring, but he is amazing and very kind. Lenient and if you ever need anything, he will be extremely helpful. There are 6 essays and 3 exams plus attendance to class and recitation are mandatory, but to be honest its probably the easiest history professor you can take, so I would advise. Grading is very generous.
Proctor is that guy
Proctor is an excellent lecturer with a real passion for teaching. His storytelling makes history engaging and easy to follow. The only downside is the frequent essays, but honestly, they're manageable since most of the material comes directly from his lectures. Overall a fantastic professor who truly cares about his students!
Grading is fair, and there are many opportunities to succeed. However, Proctor seems to like to hear himself speak, not only lecturing for hours on end in every lecture where interaction is nonexistent but also teaching every single recitation. Way too many assignments, and essays still due each week of purposely torturously long exams. Don't take.
How this man doesn't have a 5/5 I do not know, so I'm going to go with review bombs from other jealous professors. Every possible consideration and material is afforded to you in this class. There is no one more accessible or kind. Also, he pays for lunch once a semester so, you know.
Great guy who goes a long way for his students. Won't take another class with him because I just did it for credit and history isn't really my thing. Tons of extra credit opportunities if you remember them. Pretty much a weekly essay that you can get an extension on. Readings are unnecessary, but use them for extra info and quotes.
Professor Proctor is excellent. He provides comprehensive review sheets with possible exam questions, detailed audio reviews on Canvas, and accessible TAs. Weekly essays come with helpful feedback. If you make use of these resources, you'll do great in the class. His lectures are engaging, and his notes are clear and thorough. He's the BEST.
Proctor eats, sleeps, and breathes Tufts. Total saint who wants everyone to get an A.
I have never been a huge fan of history classes, but this class was one of the most interesting courses I have ever taken. Taking a Proctor class at some point should be mandatory. Weekly essays, but extensions are easy to get and no questions asked. The tests are very long, but not difficult and there are no surprises. Incredible lecturer.
Genuinely the easiest and most accommodating teacher I've ever known. If I can get an A having never read the textbook, pay attention, and write horrible papers I have no clue how anyone could every way anything bad about this prof. The weekly papers are a valid critique, but you really don't need to spend that much time on them. You'll be fine.
Proctor is incredibly accommodating and a fantastic storyteller. My only gripe is that for visual learners, once you lose track of the story, it's tough to pick it back up. The readings were optional, and I found the class interesting. The essays were a lot, but fairly graded. If you do the work, you'll get an A. Exams are a lot of writing but fine
Proctor is extremely knowledgable and super accommodating. You get unlimited extensions on papers and extra credit just for attending lectures. However, the speed of his lectures made following along difficult and they were often exceedingly boring. There was nearly an essay per week but extra credit on all 3 exams which were graded leniently.
Proctor has a lot of reviews (one of my favorites) so this review is for Byzantine World. As long as you put any effort into the class, an A is easy. Weekly papers graded lightly, don't really have to do the readings, does take attendance at lectures, exams are basically just memorization and if you put in effort it is an easy >100% per exam.
Everyone sings Proctor's praises, but I'll be real this class was a bit brutal. The tests will kill you. He gives you essay questions in advance and an idea of the IDs, but it's so much material to cover. Also, the weekly essays made me want to die a little bit. Lectures are educational marathons, but if you love history (like me) you'll be ok.
Proctor is a Tufts legend. Will be a lot of work, but he sets up an A on a silver platter if you do any work at all. he is a professor who wants everyone in his class to do as well as possible while also making sure we learn history. Cannot graduate from Tufts without taking a Proctor class.
Very deserving of a high rating. Lectures are like stories and you will be engaged. However, lots of essays, but they are graded fairly and you can use the same one on the exams. Very good guy.
The most information you will ever get. Free A+ if you do the work but there's just a lot of it. Be warned the midterms and final are 3+ hour in class essays --- you'll do fine just be ready.
Proctor clearly knows tons and is invested in what he's teaching - great guy. The class is a lot of work (essays, readings, exams), but it's not difficult work and grading is relatively lenient. If you read the Gregory and attend lectures you'll know everything you need.
Proctor is one of my favorite profs. He gives amazing lectures (which are not mandatory and are extra credit if you go) and teaches recitations. While there is a lot of reading and essays, he is a very easy grader. The exams are long (2-3 hours) but are also graded easily since they are handwritten. Def recommend any of his classes!
Professor Proctor is the best professor on campus! He makes Tufts, Tufts! If you have a chance you should take this class!
He's a legend - the classes are good, but there's a reason why everyone calls him caring and decent. You'll have quite a few essays due, but if you put in the time and effort you'll have a good grade.
I LOVE PROCTOR. The weekly essays are tedious but if you do the reading they're easy. Just look in the textbook. He is a professor who WANTS YOU TO GET AN A+! The exams are handwritten essays (that you wrote for homework and just repeat on the exam). You can take as long as you want on them. Always available outside of class. Truly loves teaching
Never took the guys class but based on reviews he seems like a great guy 5 stars
Professor Proctor is literally the best - you have to take a class with him at some point!! He is so understanding, passionate, and engaged with the entire Tufts community. Some people find his lectures a little boring, but I actually really enjoyed them and learned so much from this course. The weekly essays are kind of annoying, but really easy.
Absolute Tufts legend. Such a caring guy, doesn't want anyone to fail, and provides an excellent structure to a dense history class. You can't graduate without taking a Proctor class.
Professor Proctor is incredibly knowledgeable. This course focused on Eric Hoffer's The True Believer, and his ability to guide discussion about the material was so engaging. The reading is light, and you will not feel rushed; the assignments are very straightforward discussion posts. Definitely worth it for a one-credit class!
He is a great professor. Must take him at least once, if you put in effort he will grade you well.
For the Balkans Since 1453 - amazing lectures! Beware that the class is once a week for 3 hours, so the lectures can get very long. I also didn't love the way the discussions were set up - not everyone participated and it could get dry. However, Proctor really wants you to succeed and is the nicest! and so passionate about history! He is wonderful!
This is a review specifically about Europe Since bc Proctor has enough 5 star ratings that speak for his character. There's three exams, all the same format, and he gives you a detailed review sheet and recording so there's plenty of opportunity to know your stuff. There are essay assignments almost every week but they're easy to do well on.
Proctor knows everything about Byzantine women yet can lecture in a way that is digestible and intriguing, which I really appreciated as a STEM student who had never taken a history class at Tufts before. This class required a decent amount of reading and discussion boards, 3 essays, and in-class discussions.
Best professor I've taken. Such an easy class. I never studied one bit, never opened a single reading and still got an A. It was that easy. The exams are quite draining because you write a lot but I never got below a 99 on any(yes you can get over 100). So definitely recommend it, especially for the part 2 culture requirement.
Love the man, the class itself is very easy however. There wasn't too much that one wouldn't know from a day of wikipedia reading, but get that GPA.
It was a privilege to work with Proctor for my senior thesis. He is a kind, witty, and brilliant professor. Working with him has been both personally enriching and intellectually rewarding. That said, my words hardly do justice to this exceptional man. He embodies of all the best things Tufts has to offer. We are lucky to have a professor like him.
Proctor lives up to all expectations. He is very student first and wants people to succeed. This does not mean the class is no work at all as you will be asked to write a decent amount. The class is 80% tests but he grades them easily and gives tons of extra credit opportunity.
Proctor himself is super nice, and he wants you to do well. BUT there is a ton of homework readings (about 80 pages per class, which you don't HAVE to do, you can get by without them) AND a weekly essay which can be a lot. It is 4 credits, but it's a sizeable workload for a class everybody claims is super easy.
Proctor is very understanding and generous, but his class requires so much work that it honestly doesn't make a difference. The amount of time I spent doing work for this class as an engineering major is genuinely insane. That being said, it's not difficult to get a good grade as long as you do put in that effort.
best professor at tufts
I loved Dr. Proctor. His classes are an absolute treat. The recitations are necessary but can be helpful. For the exams, as long as you pay attention/listen to the review guide, you'll do great on.
AMAZING AND ENGAGING
Very passionate lecturer who cares about his students and their success. Tests are annoying to study for but you know exactly what will be on them so there is little stress. Weekly essays but they are only worth around 1% of your grade each. Class is a good amount of work but an easy A if you put in effort.
Amazing professor! No need to read the "required" readings. Essays every two weeks, but prompts are reused on exams and graded easily. Lectures are extra credit, recitations mandatory but helpful. Tedious exams with lots of extra credit. Regardless, stress-free as you are told what will be on it in advanced, just quite a bit of memorization.
I personally loved his lectures and found them engaging. He's pretty flexible with papers and gives helpful feedback. Take advantage of opportunities for extra credit.
Loved Proctor!! Super accommodating with the bi-weekly essays and exams were pretty straight forward if you put in the time to study. Definitely a lot more work than I was expecting for an 'easy' class, but I learned so much that I honestly didn't mind.
