Totally second the previous comment. All I did was homework for him. VERY time consuming, but his classes are fun. I like the way he teaches, and you learn so much! Highly recommended if you don't want a boy/girl friend or a life. :)
Great teacher. Only problem is the work load is very big. Be prepared to spend a lot of hours outside of class on assignments.
This was my hardest teacher. I did not enjoy him at all. Very unhelpful when it came to asking specific questions and teaching style was not to my liking.
If you are interesting in taking a class where you have more homework in this one class than all other 18 credits you are taking combined, then this is the teacher for you! It is a great class with lot to be learned, but the workload is outrageous!
ummm, do not take a class from him! he's a nice guy but i did not care for his teaching style one bit!
A very good teacher. Class moves very fast so pay attention. I would recomend him to anyone. Be up good a challenge though. Bro. Pulsipher is one of the best teashers you will get.
I loved this class, he really knew what he was talking about.
I loved this professor. He is one of the nicest I have had so far. I would recomend taking this class during the summer, the work load was far lighter than what I have heard about those who have taken it during the fall or winter. Overall a very good professor, and I learned a lot from him :)
Do not take if you are lazy. Hardest class I took, also most worthwhile. Take it, work hard, you will gain so much. Pulsipher may be the world's kindest man - hard to find a better teacher or person.
He was a really great teacher. I became very sick and I was unable to attend the class the second half of the semester. He was very patient and worked with me and helped me to pass the class. He's very helpful and is good at preparing you for your tests. He tries his best to make his class interesting and he really cares for the students.
His format is incredibly hard. You almost have to right books to prepare for his tests. However, his lectures are very engaging and if you pay attention in class, you get points for it. I liked that alot! Plus, I think he is a very nice teacher.
Not really a fan. He never did much teaching at all. Daily quizzes, and the short answer part we discuss the entire time and then pretty much vote on the answer as a class. I didn't like this, but you can really learn to use it to your advantage. Exams and presentations aren't graded very fair. Study a lot for exams!!!!
very good teacher. lectures get alittle boring at times and test are not easy. but this is a harder class in general. i liked how there was no text book and everything was on blackboard.
He explained very well and the best part, you didn't have to know a lot of dates, just the really important ones. Also you don't have to buy a text book, it's all in class notes.
I took this as a freshman which was maybe a mistake. It was mostly upperclassmen majoring in History. Fascinating text book and fun discussions though. The essay tests are difficult because you have to memorize over 25 different terms consisting of battles, people, events, definitions. Worthwhile if you're willing to work hard and have an interest.
Enjoyed his class. Tests are a little difficult and you need to take good notes. Hint: he starts class “introduction” with a scripture which will become a question on an exam. A lot of reading on blackboard, but not necessary to read to pass. PAY ATTENTION! No study group.
He was the hardest teacher I have ever had and I refuse to take him again! He doesn't teach, but "directs" class. His essay tests are VERY hard and you must be straightforward and very detailed in explaining the terms in this test. I learned more from our text than from him!! His democracy-theory is a joke. Be prepared to work very hard!!
He is one of the hardest teachers I have ever had. His test and very wordy. There is no txt book for his class, you can only miss two days, and two tardies equal an absence. He is a boring teacher and its hard to stay awake in his class. He is a lecture teacher and you have to rely on your notes to prepare for the test.
He is a great teacher. Take good notes and study hard, the tests require knowing the material, not just memoizing facts. I really enjoyed this class, very interesting.
i loved this teacher. he is very passionate about this subject and he passes it on to his students. he gives you multiple opportunities for extra credit. Anyone who says he is a bad teacher just doesn't enjoy history. i would recommend bro. Pulsipher to anyone!!!! he is wonderful.
Brother Pulsipher is an amazing teacher. He is smart and loves what he does. I really enjoyed his class. You do need to participate in class and there are readings due for every class. I highly recommend him.
Very great teacher. Participation is a must, it makes up 20% of your grade. He makes the class fun and if you pay attention and take good notes, you will do well on the tests. You have to know the material and not facts for the tests. Also, there is lots of reading assignments and lots of group work!
Brother Pulsipher is a great guy! I will really miss his class! Participation is a must!! You have to make a certain amount of comments, just try to do them all soon if you dont like to. He is still trying to perfect the class but I think he is doing really great! Very spiritual professor!
Brother Pulsipher is an interesting teacher. I just didn't like the class as much. It required alot of reading, which he often didn't put up till the night before.
He gave a ton of work.We had to read 5 columns a week from washington post or new york times and analyze them once a week.On top of that we had to read dumb philosophies of men who lived in the 1700's and 1800's of how government should work and we had a quiz every class day.His quizzes are insane!Plus his class periods are pointless. Avoid!!!!!
He's really interested and knowledgeable about the subject, so he is really great at delivering the material in ways you understand. He made a lot of curriculum changes this semester that definitely has lightened the workload. That being said, you can't really slack off too much in this class, but you really wont want to, it's fun.
One of the Best History Teachers at BYU-I don't beleive all these freshmen students, he is passionate about what he teaches, and does so in a modern style, I would highly recommend him for anyone! although some of his reading assignments are long, he knows what he is doing.
He is a good teacher but sometimes is hard to understand. The test are really hard but he really loves what he teaches and is a nice man. The assignments are not very hard and he dosnt care if you miss class.
The classwork is pretty easy. But his tests are really hard. Just do the daily assignments and do the group work and you will get at least a B.
Very good person. As for teaching he rambles on about the same thing the whole hour. Tests are extremely hard. Doesn't matter if you actually go to class. The most boring class I have ever taken. Very stubborn and you will not get an A.
DO NOT TAKE HIM!! Class is POINTLESS. Half the class doesn't even go anyway. His tests are SUPER hard! He doesnt review over whats on the tests and tells you to study the wrong things for the multiple choice. Some of the things on the test he didn't even cover in or out of class. Take someone else.
We have a lecture everyday, pay attention what he says will most likely be on the exam. We have a tension analysis every week with our group that we pick where we find two articles from either nytimes or washington post which is hard but if you actually read its not bad. Tests are not hard if you study your notes especially. study you will get an A
This class isn't as hard as everyone thinks, you just have to actually study for the test which is mostly made up of things from the book we read and class notes. He's a good guy and it is evident that he loves what he teaches. Class is sort of boring unless you participate, but overall it wasn't too bad.
I LOVED this class because he taught it. I highly recommend this teacher. He teaches you so much about being fair and unbiased in politics - looking at both sides. The homework is pretty easy and I looked forward to going to class every day. I never missed a class, I love his lectures (: You just have to study all of the material for the exam.
He is an awesome teacher! Loved this class!! Even though most of the time he does lecture it was so interesting. You can tell he loves what he does and is very knowledgeable. He also is willing to help you if you make the effort to try. Tests are pretty tough but pay attention in class and study and you'll be fine.
He is a really hard teacher. Class is boring and he doesn't cover everything that is on the test. The tests are super hard and you don't have a lot of material to study from. You can study hard and still fail the tests. Getting an A is very difficult. I do not recommend him.
I feel like he focused too much on political tensions instead of the history that built this country. What you study isn't on the tests and he assigns a lot of busy work. I don't feel like I learned anything that I didn't already know; I wanted to learn about law and government, not tension and debate. As a frustrated student I don't recommend him.
I like himas a teacher I learned allot from him. His tests can be tricky. You really have to be careful of that. You have a group that meets every week and have a couple big group assignments that you do throughout the semister. I don't really care for group work myself. Overall ejoyed his class
Brother Pulipher is an alright teacher if you take notes, write down EVERYTHING that's on the slides and memorize the tensions you'll do fine.
I thought he was a great teacher. He loves what he's talking about, the textbook's tiny, and minimal homework. Study groups and two big assignments, but the rest is mostly tests. He also drops the lowest test and 3 assignments. Very interesting to talk with, and a different take on the history of America, but I very much enjoyed it.
I Absolutly loved this class! I thought he was a great teacher. I don't know what all of these bad comments are about! I have never been interested in history and I lovvved him! I actually looked forward to reading the textbook. So stop hating people! He is a great teacher that actually makes you work for your grade. Take his class!!!
I LOVED Brother Pulsipher. He is such a great guy. I never enjoyed history before I came to his class. Yes, the class is very difficult and it really challenged me. I worked hard and pulled off a B+. I highly recommened this class. There is a ton of work but you learn soooo much from it! Isn't that why we are in college? Take him:)
Brother Pulsipher is a great teacher. I recommend taking his American Foundations class. Be prepared for a lot of homework. To be successful: 1) Attend class regularly 2) Take good notes 3) DO THE HOMEWORK 4) Study powerpoints, old homework, and attend test review sessions to do well on tests.
Great teacher. The tensions were interesting and seemed a bit redundant, but the information covered is interesting. IF you do your homework and pay attention its easy to get an A. He is a very good man, and very helpful and respectful.
Bro. Pulsipher was nice and theres potential to learn a lot from him class, but if you don't really care about politics and you want to get FDAMF out of the way as quick and easy as possible, I wouldn't recommend his class.
Brother Pulishper is a great teacher with a great class. I loved the history of it, and he explained the politics of America so that even I could understand them, as much as anyone can, that is.
Almost impossible to get 100% on any of his on line write ups. Professor can be very condescending. I would not recommend this class to anybody.
I love this guy. The only one at BYU-I that told me exactly how he wanted things. I would take him again! Plus, he is related to EVERYONE
Bro Pulsipher is a great teacher. His in-class discussions are interesting. The assignments are not extremely difficult. Best history teacher I have had at BYU:I.
I LOVED Brother Pulsipher's class!!! He was super nice and very approachable. The only thing is that his class is pretty involved so it's not the very easiest way to get the class out of the way, but it was definitely really fun and it was probably my favorite class that semester!
Excellent teacher. Very clear and very helpful. His TA does grade everything so if you feel like your grade isn't fair come to him and he's SUPER nice and he'll up it. I am so surprised at how applicable this class was. It felt super-easy, but in reality I did work hard and learn a lot. It is tons of fun and doesn't feel like work.
I learned a lot in Bro Pulsipher's class, but the tests were ridiculous. I felt like his lectures didn't really match what he was looking for on the test. It was nearly impossible to get a 100% on the homework essay questions.
He does not have a syllabus that he follows. He does not give a lot of graded assignments, so one cannot easily raise their grade.
I didn't think I would enjoy this class, but I did! I loved my group and I thought he taught clearly and was willing to negotiate and listen to and appeal to complaints about assignments. Assessments were pretty easy if you did the reading and there is a lot of class interaction and discussion. He is a very open-minded teacher. Take him for AMF!
If you put in the time to read the assignments and pay attention in class then you will get a good grade in the class.
Brother Pulsipher really knows what he is talking about. He uses real world examples and makes the class interesting. In order to get a good grade you have to do your homework and the reading, but other than that he makes it pretty easy to do well
Brother Pulsipher is easily one of my favorite professors. His class mixed current events with historical events. Brother Pulispher does lecture a lot, but I loved it. He's brilliant. His readings were reasonable in length and he lets his students set the grading standards. I'll take his classes whenever I can.
Makes the material very interesting.
Dr. Pulsipher is a pretty good professor and knows his stuff, but the way he sets up this class is awful. The "optional" assignment is 7% of the grade, so do it! Almost 50% of the class is group work. His two tests are poorly written, uber specific, and his lectures have nothing to do with the tests.
I signed up for FDAMF but was then in for an experiement for the new CIVIL SOCIETY hybrid class. It is more than just American history, with more World examples. We are split into groups and decide our grading rubric. Weird test style but it's easy it's easy to learn. A few long assignments, and a few pointless ones, but overall cool discussions.
I really liked Pulsipher. This class is mostly group work. You read one of the books he wrote and it was amazing. Really good teacher who wants to help his students learn. There is a lot of good class discussion. Pretty easy class overall.
Its a hybrid class and you are divided into groups that don't have to meet or anything. He lets the class choose the grading rubric so you can hack the system to get the group participation make up most of your grade. Tests and quizes were hard and the homework was a lot longer than it should have been, and he doesn't respond to emails.
He is an awesome person, and he cares about his students. Reading and assignments are there to make you think, he never really gives his own opinion. If you really want to understand what is going on and understand the assignments and reading it takes about 10-14 hours a week. Most of the students just read it without trying to fully understand it.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS unless you want to spend hours reading and doing pointless homework assignments. He splits you into groups for the semester and assigns a lot of homework for the week, sometimes it even took hours to finish- Nobody has time for that!! You also read a book and take hard quizzes on what you read.
Brother Pulispher is an outstanding man with great views. I loved his class discussions and he clearly cares about what he teaches and knows what he's talking about. The class isn't easy however, work hard, read the material, and study for the tests and you'll easily pass. Sometimes felt like his HW assignments were busy work. I learned so much.
This class was almost pointless. There were a few things that we learned but the workload did not equal the benefit of the class. At the end of the semester the team grades each other and it's basically is just a measure of who is better friends. Do not take FDCIV ever! I would avoid this teacher also.
He's a great teacher and very educated about what he is teaching. He knows American history like nothing else and has really good, interesting lectures. People are complaining about the workload--it's true there is a LOT of reading, but it IS interesting and I've learned a ton (and hello, this is college). I highly recommend Brother Pulsipher!
Brother Pulsipher is very spiritual and is smart. He knows a lot about politics and makes it almost simple for us to understand. The only bad point that I think of his class is his TA that corrects all of our assignments, but I don't think that she really go over everything we write...
Brother Pulsipher is very insightful and knows how to teach. He has great lectures that really help us understand the material. The TA for the class was not helpful and didn't grade the assignments well which made it frustrating. I loved the teams he put us in because it really put the ideas and philosophies of the course into action.
brother David is awesome! he is really nice guy. very clear and precise. i loved his classes and this course. i am international students and i really learned so much with him
Great teacher. He presents the information in a way that makes you ponder. He will put you in a group that will stay the same for the semester. Lots of homework. Quizzes are really hard, but only two actual tests. Lots of class discussion. YES its a hard class but he ends up dropping more assignments at the end of the semester, raising your grade.
I loved Brother Pulispher so much. His lectures were so inspiring and I learned soo much in his class about myself and society. There is an assignment due every class and you won't pass any quiz or test without doing it. You divide into groups that you have all year, and you take every quiz individually, and then as a group, so they help a lot.
Gives tons of homework, sometimes took me 8 hours to finish one assignment! Grades extremely harsh, no give. Marks you down on stupid things. I will never take a class from him again, I would suggest you don't either.
I love Brother Pulsipher. He had a way of explaining things very logically and even tying in the spiritual, which most professors here try but fail miserably at. His way of thinking is very similar to mine, and it worked well for me. The class needs some work, the concepts were awesome but there was a lot of useless work (hybrid class.) Reccommend.
David Pulsipher is simply a good man and a great teacher. He teaches in a clear and engaging way. He makes topics fascinating and really gets you to think about them in ways you haven't considered. His teaching is not tainted by bias. He genuinely cares about students. Take the time to get to know him outside of class. It would be well worth it.
I loved Brother Pulsipher's class. I would take every class from him if I could. The class was expertly formatted and very fun while also being extremely engaging. I changed my major over this class. On a personal note, Brother Pulsipher is an amazing and inspiring man whose character is admirable and whose ideas are very well thought out. 10/10
This class requires effort, so don't take it if you're looking for an easy A. If you want an incredible learning experience that will change your outlook on life, do take it. David Pulsipher is a brilliant teacher. Listen to him! This class can be a mind-expanding experience if you go into it with the right perspective.
I loved learning in this class however there is A LOT of reading and homework. The TA grades pretty harsh, which he admitted once. He is strict on attendance. But you will learn a lot about the world and he is funny and a genuinely nice person. He will work with you TJ get you help if you need it.
Brother Pulsipher is amazing! You will LOVE him! He's fun, great, straight to the point, & makes you really think deeply about the topics he goes over. Every Monday there is one assignment due which can take up to 2 hours to do, but worth it! It's also necessary if you want to pass the mini quizzes in class! They are simple and you'll like it!
I loved this class. We were put into groups and worked with those groups for the entire semester. This was great and he let the students determine the grading distribution. There was a lot of reading, time and work outside of class, but it was interesting and helped in daily life. Loved the class. Highly recommend.
Not usual lectures, you will be not bored on them. Prepear to read and for weekle homeworks. One of classes where you work mostly in groups, so it is make it easy to pass.
Dr. Pulsipher is an excellent teacher and historian. Anybody who complains about the workload is not a serious history student. This is a major where you will do lots of reading, writing, and research. He does a fantastic job of helping students understand what historians do.
TAKE BRO. PULSIPHER!!! This was by far my favorite class I have taken. It's so easy, no need to go to Testing Center. Group project heavy and you don't get to choose your group- I was just lucky and had a good one. The homework is a lot of reading but it's interesting stuff. Quizzes are super easy. He is such an awesome and genuine professor.
Brother Pulsipher gives great lectures and is an overall great teacher. His class is very engaging and interesting. The class is based off of group work so as long as you have a good group you'll be fine. There is a ton of reading involved and one big assignment each week. If you do your work you'll get a good grade.
Such a great class. Don't waste your time with more American history; learn how to be a true citizen! Brother Pulsipher is so open-minded and witty. He really taught me how to be kind and fair to those you don't agree with. Group work is so important. Do your part and trust your team. Follow the workbook rubrics to a T! Enjoy the course. Worth it!
Brother Pulsipher is good. A few words of advice for the class: Do well on workbook 1.1 if you have time. Also: Make Team Contribution be 15%. I suggest that Preparations and Assignments be 25% or less. Team Performance can be made higher than the others. And finally, make the break-down within Individual Performance be 50-50 or close to it.
Class Objective: identify & regurgitate his views on society. Encourages original thinking by students, but is intolerant of it if it doesn't match his own political ideals. Never reviews assignments to tell you what to improve on & the TA won't get back with you either. Assignments are guesswork if you're not speaking his idealistic language.
David Pulsipher is excellent in his use of the Socratic Method to keep classes engaged in his subject material. Even those rare times where discussion drifted from the topic material were made more interesting. He knows exactly which multimedia material will be most interesting. My one complaint is I don't like his online quizzes.
Dr. Pulsipher is an excellent teacher and very impressive, however there is lots and lots of busy work.
I loved taking his class this semester. Great lectures and really helps you understand what if being taught. I learned so much from this class.
He is awesome! Super friendly and fun. Extremely smart and helpful. His class is based off group work, but it's different than usual and organized much better. I loved my group. The homework is not hard and his class setup is easy to follow. I learned a lot about what it means to be a good historian and what to expect in my future studies. Great!
He is a great teacher who really cares about his students and about the topics taught. He uses lots of group work and few assignments per week, I would definitely take a class from him again!
You always know what to expect. W/ few exceptions, every week was the same. Monday was a lecture, Wednesday was a review of the HW, and Friday was teamwork. We chose the weighting of our grades and worked in teams. Team members graded us which kept us accountable. Bro Pulsipher is also very understanding and gives ample opportunity to improve.
Brother Pulsipher is one of my all-time favorite professors. He is an amazing teacher and provides you with plenty of learning opportunities. He is very clear in his expectations, and generally a great time.
Brother Pulsipher makes sure you understand the material. He gives really good lectures. We worked in groups for most of class but Brother P. is there when you need help. Him and the TAs are easy to contact and are more than willing to help with the projects.
If you are in a class with a tough TA, forget it. He doesn't care. He is too busy to do his own grading, and someone else does it for him, so basically it's a crap shoot. Bro. P doesn't listen when you try to get help, he pawns it off on the TA, who is in there for the power of it all, IMOP. Get a good good TA and you are golden.
1 credit class, so I didn't expect it to be hard, and it wasn't. Brother Pulsipher did make rather boring material bearable though, and that's why I liked him. He's very caring, and he's definitely passionate about his field. He's optimistic and idealistic in his lectures, but he still gives you cold, hard facts. I'm taking him again this semester.
HE definitly is easy to work with if you email him. I like how he makes you think outside the box alittle as well with history
Awesome dude. He is really knowledgeable and caring. The class was pretty easy just a reading and journal assignment every week. He loves getting to know students. He always gives a really great and nuanced perspective on things. He made a generally boring class pretty interesting. I will be taking him again.
I previously rated Bro Pulsipher based on his online class. This semester, I took a regular class with him, and it blew me away. He went above and beyond the material and made it matter. Every day, we took a multiple choice quiz to prove we'd read the material, but then it was all discussion and lecture. He truly cares about his students' welfare.
LOVED Bro Pulsipher. His class was organized and well thought out. He has a superb sense of humor and loved every moment of class time. Do the reading, and the writing, and show up every day excited to be in his presence!!
I loved this class!! I found the course content fascinating & classes engaging. You decide as a class how grades are weighted. You have a group for in class but don't have to do anything together out of class. It did get hard to come up with new conflicts to analyze for the weekly assignment. And a fair bit of reading to do, but all really good!
One of my favorite teachers Ive had at byui. He gives great lectures and makes group work more enjoyable. Hes a super kind person and wants to help his students whenever he can.
Amazing! He is so caring and strives to get to know each student. He's very passionate about the classes he teaches and classes are calm and inviting for discussion
Great teacher and great person. Effectively communicates with students the meaning of peace and conflict and professional examples of it in the workplace and in the world. Heavy reading. Make sure to understand the grade weight expectations
He took over for my teacher halfway so I did not get an entire semester of him. He was really nice but the lectures were quite boring.
I'm sure if I took another one of his classes I might have a different opinion, but the course material didn't leave him much to work with. The class itself was very easy, but it just felt boring. Not really Brother Pulsipher's fault, but I didn't get much engagement from this class. He does do a good job though.
Brother Pulispher is a very good guy, but the course was very frustrating. The assignments felt like busy work, and made it difficult to feel like I learned anything. I think there is a lot of room for improvement in the course, especially in how grading is done. Everything is done in teams, which is entertaining, but the final was frustrating.
This class seems really overwhelming at first, but you will catch on quick. The whole class is group work, but it is not bad. Just do the prep assignments. He grades everything generously and he is very kind.
Pulsipher's class was engaging despite the dry subject matter. He brings a great sense of humor and passion to his lectures. Using unstuck ai alongside the readings really helped me stay on top of the material.
