His lectures are clear and he explained concepts well. Exams and homework not hard. Labs need quite much time to do. But given its a five-credit course the time spent for labs is acceptable. Good prof and educator!
He's a funny guy and teaches really well. His lectures are also made available to the students for their access. Great help during Office hours.
DQ is super fun and you can tell he loves what he does, you don't have to use the book but if you read it everything will be super easy
One of the best professors I have ever had. Stats was always rough for me but DQ does an excellent job covering the material, he is very structured and passionate about what he teaches. Lectures are optional but definitely worth going to he is HILARIOUS. Often I would find myself watching his podcasts for fun! He is THAT good. Hope to have him agai
An excellent professor specialized in teaching. He explains ideas very clearly and easy to understand. Also, he helps students working on problems in class and explain how they should do this
We were all taking a gamble since it was his first time teaching at a university. He turned out to be an amazing professor, his points were all super clear even when the material starting getting a little difficult. Homework really reinforces what he teaches & for the first time, I actually enjoyed going to a math lecture. Definitely recommend!
Fantaistic Professor. He gives very clear lecture and he's hilarious. I love his lectures.
y'all got me messed up this is one of the worst lecturers in the math department his lectures are over-complicated and he doesn't explain anything well in class beware and avoid at all costs
Lectures are phenomenal! He makes lectures fun by actively trying to interact with the class. He shows sincere interest for the well being of his students.
He is a charismatic and funny professor. He will walk up and down the stairs and pick out students and make them talk in his mic sometimes. His lectures are clear and he posts his slides online.
One of the best professors I've taken! He is very clear in his lectures, providing many examples and explaining solutions step-by-step. Will often call upon students to answer questions in class. Labs and homework take a bit of time, but its great preparation for tests and the final.
LOVE HIM!!!! It's never boring listening to his lecture even though it's math and I would definitely take his course again
DQ is highly respected among the students and gives amazing lectures. He actually makes going to lecture something to look forward to. Discussions aren't mandatory. There are 2 hw assignments and 1 lab due every week. Get the recommended textbook that goes over the problems in the textbook, the problems in there will help you with the hw.
Professor Quarfoot adds humor to his lectures and will keep your attention throughout the lecture. Will not bore you to sleep.
sorry , his lecture is boring because of just clicking on the powerpoint slide , the hw need to scan out then have to turn in gradescoupe which made more work for student because the pic from scanning is just very blurry . it is just a boring class . have to code in rstudio to get good grade which it is suck since this is a math class not cs class
DQ is one of the best professors I've had so far at UCSD! He's hilarious during lectures and actually makes learning math interesting. I would definitely take his course again!
Professor DQ was a great choice. He sets all his students up for success. Exams are straightforward even though they are more difficult than practice ones. If you put in any effort at all it's a sure pass.
He's probably the most adorable professor I've ever had. You don't have to go to class since his lecture slides are enough, but I go anyway just to see him and hear his jokes. There's a lot of homework, but if you go to your TA's office hours, it's pretty manageable. His tests are reasonable as long as you study. He's really nice too.
Prof Quarfoot has the best lecture slides and really interesting and detailed lectures. He explains everything really clearly and all the examples he uses in lectures are relevant. He has two homework assignments due every week which force you to stay on track. He has free online textbook and all of his lectures are podcasted which is helpful 10/10
Professor Quarfoot is a very easygoing and enthusiastic presence in class. He loves to use relevant examples in class and is quite funny. Provides lots of practice tests which end up being similar to the actual tests. Lots of work for Math 11 but it is fairly easy.
I'm sorry but his 20b class is not what I expected. Topics overcomplicated. THE MAIN IDEA TO TAKE AWAY IS THIS: if you are not a math wiz, then there will be difficulties. Study all your 20A topics thoroughly to do well. You actually have to think about the concepts in this class and it is very difficult to keep up if you are not a math wiz
Quarfoot seems like a pretty nice guy, but not his 20B lectures. I feel as if he over complicates many topics and gets way too excited with throwing very difficult examples during lectures. Expect very difficult HW problems. I suggest finding a better professor if you're intimidated by math because he just makes it more difficult than it already is
David Quarfoot is a very kind person who has a genuine passion for the material he teaches. Unfortunately, his teaching method leaves much to be desired, as he doesn't give students enough examples to work with before asking them unreasonably difficult questions on completely new topics the class is trying to learn.
DON'T take his class if haven't take 10A with him. He expects you to know everything from 10A and he loves skipping steps while solving problems and using hard examples. It was pretty stressful
The reviews are true! Please avoid taking Quarfoot, he'll make your life miserable. All he does is present very difficult power point examples during lectures and doesn't really show you how to approach these math problems. Midterms are out there to trick you as well, please take it with another instructor if you really care about your grade!
I ended up dropping this class, if you're a transfer student like me, I don't recommend you to take it unless you're good at math. Everything is tied to the previous course, which this school teaches it in its own way, so it was extremely hard for me to follow. The professor is awesome though, super kind, patient, and chill.
Terrible teacher. skips steps that are needed. Extremely difficult problems for hw that is not properly taught during lecture. You are expected to know how to apply something that you are not taught how to apply. Do not take him as a teacher.
Horrible professor. His lectures are not clear and he goes through them too fast. Midterm was nothing like the lectures and he always talks in a condescending tone. Avoid him at all costs. Homeworks are due 2 times a week and they are nothing like the lectures. NEVER TAKING HIM AGAIN
I think that coming in with a good calc background really makes a difference in his class. he can really enhance whatever youve learned before. If you have no experience with calc, then you may not be able to follow his lectures and rewatch his podcast. Homework is easy and midterm is fairly straightforward (if you understand the concepts)
His lectures, are funny and enjoyable, but can be lacking with some regard, leaving us sometimes struggling when it comes to the homework (twice a week but a usual max of 20 problems). But if you have a solid background with Calc AB (MATH20A), you should do reasonably well. There are MANY resources that we can use (e.g. podcasts, SI, office hrs...)
As I sit here reviewing for my second midterm in Quarfoot's class, tears begin brimming in my eyes, threatening to fall, as I realize I am about to fail again. With nowhere else to turn, I drown my sorrows in Oreos. Nah but for real this class made me cry. Don't take Quarfoot unless you can think conceptually and have a good Calc background.
Quarfoot is generally a nice professor but he doesn't give us enough review before midterms. The way he explains new chapters can be confusing. I'm about to take my second midterm and like the first, I still do not feel prepared. I don't think I'd take him again, but if you're up for a challenge (or if you're good at math), I think you'll be fine.
Professor Quarfoot's lectures are both fun and engaging. I look forward to his lectures everyday. More than what he teaches, the way he teaches makes him easy to understand and follow. Every day I come out having learned a lot more than I expect. He is a great professor and I am fortunate to have him.
DQ is nice and friendly prof who really makes an effort to get to know his students. lectures are over simplified while the homework is very complex, so you often spend alot of time on the homework. His first midterm is hard to weed out people while the second is pretty fair. There'll be times he's very frustrating but overall he's not a bad prof
I wish I could take Quarfoot for all my maths. I personally think he's funny and seems like a really nice person who wants his students to learn and understand what they're learning. 10/10 would recommend.
Amazing, hilarious lectures, always learn something new. You can check his lectures at ucsd podcasts, he conveys concepts very clearly. Homework is tough, but prepares you very well for midterms (similar difficulty). Plus provides a list of suggested textbook problems, the midterm is again very similar to these. Just do these and you will be good.
This man is more than just a capable professor. His slides are formatted in a way that they are easy to follow, and never fail to offer up math problems that allow for clarification of misconceptions and deeper understanding of the topic. He never fails to make the math more interesting, and is always aware of the learner's perspective.
Lectures are very informative and helpful, he gives a lot of tips and hints to what he's going to put on the tests. The suggested homework is also helpful. Really funny professor, super enthusiastic about math which I think is nice c:
Quarfoot is an amazing lecturer, his slides are posted and it's organized very well. However, the homework is pretty tough, but it prepares you well for the midterm (which is easier in my opinion). Just go to lecture and you will be fine.
Very enthusiastic about the material and offers clear explanations. Funny guy. Clear lecture slides with a lot of visuals. Only complaint is that he can go too fast, but to compensate he releases slides 24h b/f class. Gives many resources to prep for exams including supplementary textbook problems and even past exams. Lenient w/ partial credit.
His class may feel very challenging and overwhelming at first, especially if you do not have a strong math background. It gets better tho, his midterms and final were honestly not bad at all due to partial credit. If you want the A, be ready to put in some work.
He is an amazing lecturer. He covers most of the material during lecture (even the hard problems). He is really approachable when going to office hours. If you like math a lot and want somebody enthusiastic to teach you the subject, you should totally take his class.
He is not bad at all, though I seeing the evaluations for most 10B instructors, all of them seem to be pretty difficulty (low averages). 2 HW's every week on WileyPlus, 3 exams, and one exam can be dropped. When I took him, his Midterm 1 was difficult (low average) but Midterm 2 and Final exam were not hard. Ask for help when needed. Take him.
Quarfoot is the best math teacher I've ever had and I'm sad I wont be able to take him again for other classes. His teaching style ensures that you know the material and helps you build a solid foundation in calculus.
If you ever wanted to learn a math by having someone read what looks like something straight off of a Wikipedia page, then take this class. The lectures were useless, and the exams did not reflect any of the stuff in lecture. He reads off a PowerPoint and then uses Socrative to "quiz" us anonymously in order to mine data from students.
I love the way he teaches. He clearly cares about the students and provides students with tons of material such as lecture slides, podcasts and lots of homework. He also is a genius of systematization and clarity. Take him and you will not be sorry!
Slides and lectures were pointless - didn't explain anything well, and did not reflect exams. His homework problems even stumped the math tutors I went to see who I ran to in desperation because I learned NOTHING and his homework was difficult. Homework also didn't reflect exams.
Would be difficult if you havent seen the material before. Hes entertaining during lecture, you wont fall asleep. His exams were unrelated to the HW and had a few things meant to throw you off. HW was ridiculously hard. Make sure you know the foundational material (trig, precalc, etc). His partial credit on exams made it worth it tho.
Quarfoot is extremely hard, if you do not show up to lectures or study on your own time, you will fail. His tests were fair, but his final was on a different level. His HW is also extremely hard. Overall he is a good lecturer, but it's not worth taking his class if he expects you to learn stuff that is usually for a tougher class.
For math 10 series, as a student with a decent math background, his lectures are clear and the exams are easy that fairly represents the class material. Online homework are indeed a bit more challenging but definitely rewarding. Doing practice exams will prepare you well. Studying math with Quarfoot is easy and relaxing. 10/10
I notice a lot of people who do well in his class have either taken Calculus in high school, retaken the class, or have a good background in math. If you have none of those things, good luck. Not only is he extremely difficult, he makes things more complicated than they should be. I went to Supplementary Instruction instead of his slides/lectures.
By far the best math teacher I've had. He is quirky which make lectures interesting, but also very knowledgeable and skilled at explaining complex topics through metacognition. Online homework paired with the practice tests will prepare you well for exams. Exams are fair representation of class and he's lenient with partial credit.
Quarfoot is awesome and actually manages to make stats entertaining. He actually cares about teaching and is really trying to make the students succeed and work with the material. Take him if you can it is totally worth it.
Calculus was not hard because I had already taken Calc BC and I am good at math so this class was easier for me. His lectures are easy to follow and he is funny especially his analogies, they are not what you expect. He podcast so you don't have to attend but I did anyways. Homework is due Mon. Wed. and Friday.
His lecture is very clear and well planned! And he can explain stuff down to the earth. Tests are fair. I've heard that 20B is somewhat difficult, but with him, I don't feel it.
Professor Quarfoot is a great lecturer. His slides are well structured and clear, he is always accessible and, yes, he assigns LOTS of hw. However, this is a very rare case when hw problems are actually interesting to work on: he uses real data sets from real researches. He also makes lots of sarcastic jokes which I find hilarious.
Overall, 1 of the better prof I ever had. Hes aninteresting guy, keeps lectures from being boring imo. 17 smaller HWs 6-12hrs depending on student. 2 Midterms somewhat more difficult than HW. Final nearly identical difficulty to practice finals and HW. All exam/hw material directly from lectures/text. His teaching makes course easier. Podcasted.
Fantastic professor!! His homework assignments are very difficult but they are designed to make you really learn the material and make the actual exams seem much easier. His research is in math education, and you can tell - he knows how to teach. If you have the chance, take him!! He's super funny too and really cares about your success.
Quarfoot is easily the best math teacher Ive ever had. He's an amazing lecturer and knows how to teach math really well. I always left class feeling like I learned alot. the only potential drawback is his tests are really hard. He tests you to see if you reallly know the material, theres no "practice midterm same as midterm" or anything like that.
If you want to actually learn something take Quarfoot!! If you're just trying to get an "easy A" (or B lolol) look somewhere else... his tests are difficult and require a deep deep understanding of the material. He's a super interesting guy tho and somehow makes math bearable (:
Professor Quarfoot is one of the few who really puts an effort into his teachings to help you learn. In return he requires you to really work hard and earn your grade. What I noticed about a lot of the students in my class really don't work hard enough in the class since most of them are math/cs majors who couldn't care less about stats.
Quarfoot is a great lecturer, he's very interesting and engaging and provides great examples. He doesn't curve tests but he will curve the class. His tests can be somewhat hard, the problems aren't straightforward and it can take awhile to figure it out. He assigns two homeworks a week which can be annoying but it's helpful.
Lots of homework, but honestly feel like it was kinda worth it. If this is your hardest class you'll be fine, if not you might be a bit overwhelmed. Midterms were hardish (avg of 70-75)
He basically reads off the slides on his lecture. You'll do homework twice a week and it takes you 3 hours to complete one assignment. BTW, his final is super tough.
Quarfoot provides the materials to learn calculus but hes not very good at teaching them. He goes over very simple problems in a not so engaging lecture, but homework and tests get extremely difficult. Midterms were probably slightly easier than the homework but the final was extremely challenging. Usually doesnt curve. Wouldnt recommend.
So obviously Math 20B is a very hard course, but taking it with Quarfoot makes it 10x harder. He's good at teaching the material but his exams are INSANELY difficult. Also a lot of hw! (2 per week) I did average on both midterms (they felt more doable) and overall I was feeling good about the class but after taking his final... rip me :(
Quarfoot seems like a cool guy, but he is easily the hardest Math20B professor at UCSD. His homework takes forever if you don't know what your doing. If you do know what you're doing there's still a good chance you'll bomb his tests. His tests are unnecessarily difficult and not reflective of the homework and practice problems he does in class.
(I took AP Stats before taking MATH11) QUarfoot's lectures are great for MATH11. The course is demanding for those who don't have any background in statistics. He has a lot of homework assignments (due twice a week) but they are helpful as they keep you on track. The labs have an unclear grading criteria. Exams are similar to homework problems.
His lectures are not mandatory and he will give every class slide. Midterms are ok but finals will be more difficult, but he gives curves.
Professor Quarfoot is one of the best math teachers I have ever had. His lectures are truly intriguing and he genuinely cares about students. If you go to his office hours and try to get to know him, he is great st explaining and accessible to talk to. Highly recommend him for Math20B.
Amazing professor, but even tho i thought i knew the material rly well, the final kicked my grade down real fast. The gap of difficulty between the midterms and final is huge. I advise doing the extra practice problems he posts on tritoned too. Other than that he's a great lecturer and he obviously cares a lot abt advancing his teaching exp.
He cares about teaching but his approach isn't the best. He assigns two homework assignments a week, each of which take up to about 4 hours. I feel as though he made the course harder than it had to be. Lecture slides are solid, but can sometimes be cumbersome. Exams are fair/bit difficult. Unengaging voice. Take him only if you can commit the time
DQ is very homework heavy, but he teaches well too. I attended his lectures quite often. I learned a lot in his class. He engages his student to his lecture, but his homework and tests are harder than his examples. Some problems are between graduate and college level. He also barely curves the grade, so keep that in mind too.
He gives pretty good lectures and makes it pretty easy for students to engage, but his exam and tests are in a different level. (20B first midterm, average is around 50/100), he ended up curving the class by giving everyone 5+ points. Therefore be ready to learn well and prepare or his classes.
He made HW question himself. Two HW due in one week. Messy HW grading criteria, you may get the minimum score even you do everything just correct(BUT LOOKS SLIGHTLY DIFFERENT TO HIS ANSWER). Got a good grade though.
DQ knows his stuff and explains things very well with examples and interactive questions. My only complaint is that he can be a little bit too quiet, even if you are sitting up front.
If you're taking DQ with other engineering classes, be prepared. His homeworks take 3-4 hour each and are challenging. His midterms are fair but prepare for the final (complex questions and little time).
Look, I get that homework is essential in building those math skills, but the fact that it focuses more on the computation rather than the concept is terrible. I rather spend an hour to really understand what I am doing rather than googling the formula or "the way" the problem should be solved. His teaching is bad when it can't be linked to the HW
Quarfoot is one of the best and hardest professors I've ever taken. He provides the material very clearly. He is happy to help any student that cares during office hours. His exams are incredibly difficult and challenge you to actually understand the material not just memorize similar example problems. Said he wouldnt curve but did by 6% in the end
He really puts a lot of effort into teaching and designing all the problems. The lectures are inspirational. He can explain the concepts clearly. He is caring and accessible outside the class. He is actually my favorite professor at UCSD. Don't know why he is rated so low. The workload is real but you can really learn a lot from him.
I really enjoy stats, but I have to say this class has been pretty disappointing. HW is heavy. The textbook is good. The exams are unnecessarily difficult. Just expect the kind of difficult unrealistic problem solving that contributes less to learning and more to stereotypical academic ivory tower insularity and stress.
Homework is way much than a course should have and some problems are beyond the scope of what he has taught. He overemphasized calculation by hand than calculator. Also, there is nothing such as Piazza to discuss approach of solving problems. Every hw feels like exams. Though I have programming background, I don't know how to do his coding question
Honestly one of the worst professors. Doesn't host zoom lectures (lectures only via youtube) and does not make himself accessible outside class for zooms. Homework is poorly written and due twice a week. He does not allow students to post questions on Piazza for any clarification or help. There are a lot better professors for Math 183.
Very High-quality lectures and above-average workload, the exam difficulty is moderate. The best math prof I've met in the first year.
One of the worst professors. Slides are extremely unclear and he reads straight from them. Avoid at all cost
This professor teaches stats in the worst way possible. He does not use technical terms, preferring terms like PHANTOM so searching for help is impossible. Good luck trying to figure it out on your own since the professor does not host zoom lectures.
This guy has a good heart but can't really teach. He just reads off his lecture slides but then the homework is ten times harder than what you've ever seen. Don't forget you have two homework sets due per week. The exams consist of 40% related material and 60% questions only he would be able to answer. These exams are for DQ, by DQ.
I was reported for violation of AI, but I won't disgrace a good professor just because he reported me. I recommend him because although the work load is a lot, I learned a lot from his class. However, I do recommend him to allow students to work more collaboratively.
Couldn't find the class recording on the very first day... confusing canvas page... After 2 lectures, I ended up just reading the lecture pdf and not watching the class recording. Lots of hw, spending 7 to 8 hrs on hw at least every week. Very helpful during office hour, but still hope we could use piazza for discussion.
Knows his stuff but not worth taking his class. Unrealistic amount of hw, no piazza, not accessible outside of class, no curve, and exams that you can't finish in the intended time even with lots of study. Sad to see a good guy so out of touch with why students feel the need to cheat to pass his class.
Quarfoot means well but is very hard, to succeed in this class you REALLY and I mean REALLY(!!!) need to know your stuff! Homework is not a good representation of what the exams will be like, they are 100 times harder. My HW avg was a 90.2 and I got a 68% Midterm1 and a 70% Midterm2. The final was so-so, first 1/2 was ez other 1/2 was difficult. GL
Okay, I read the other reviews and I would just like to say, the lectures are fine. I took him for MATH 20B as well, and loved both classes (183 and 20B). While he does give a lot of homework, it helps you learn. This is coming from a CSE student who took 22 units at the time. I had no experience in stats before this and Quarfoot made it easy.
I expected him to be a good professor and he does seem like he will be when you hear him talk and explain stuff. It's just his damn tests. His lectures are so specific that it makes it very difficult to apply the concepts to other problems AKA the exams. It's also very weird to basically have no idea what your professor looks like unless you Google
I don't give a f about how people talking sh*t about his homework. Let's just be honest, his homework sets helped me and my friends learn. His lecture is clear and the way how he taught this subject makes this class so easy and understandable.
His homework takes a little bit of time but he just made stats easy.
Professor had no lenicency for students during COVID. Each homework takes about 4-5 hours with 2 a week OH were incredibly difficult since he made it into 1-1 sessions and waittimes are hours if you don't get into the zoom link about 30 minutes early. Emails are replied quickly but only with a recommendation to go to OHs and denials for questions.
The course reviews AP Statistics, but with more calculus involved. It is not, by any stretch, difficult content. It is, however, made artificially difficult by the degree to which ambiguities on homework are not disambiguated for tenuously educational reasons.
He thinks he's one of the best professors to walk the earth.
This professor is just extremely uncaring toward students, especially students in international time zone. He makes a 12 hour window and expects student to finish their take-home final(>3 hr workload for sure) from 1 am to 1 pm within their timezone. HIs hw are just over creative and requires cultural context, not reflecting stats understanding.
We can learn quite a bit from his class besides simple stats theory. I know the workload is real, but we can learn a LOT.
I truly learned A LOT from him. He has the best math lectures I have ever had at UCSD. I have to say his class makes me understand AP Stats on another level. People bs about his hw/tests. I have to say those hws helped me learn and understand the materials. Remember, he gave everyone 12 hours to complete his exams. Who else at UCSD is doing this?
Just finished his final. I have to say I love his class. PERIOD.
GOOD: -Reasonably good, prerecorded lectures. -Lenient 12 hour window for exams -Free textbook -You really do learn! NEUTRAL: -New homework problems every quarter BAD: -HW due twice a week. -Demand far outstrips OH supply. Expect long waits for OH. Prof. David genuinely cares about his work, but if you want/expect an easy class, avoid him.
Quarfoot really does care about his students. His questions can get weird, and the homework takes FOREVER. However, I learned so much within his class. He helped me when I asked, and his advice was always very useful. He is an interesting guy, but his passion for teaching makes you feel motivated to succeed. If you work hard, take his class.
Quarfoot is a great professor, you will only pass this class if you try and learn. His tests require a deep understanding of the concepts being taught. I studied about 4hrs/w, along with homework due twice a week. Office Hours WILL help, it's usually 1 on 1, and he goes over every question you have.
ONLY TAKE THIS PROFESSOR IF YOU WANT TO GO THE EXTRA MILE WITH STATS. Given that the course is on a tough subject, the teacher openly states how hard his class, and there are problems that aren't even covered in lecture you would expect for there to be additional help? Incorrect, the teacher SHUT DOWN our discord and only helps a handful through OH
His teaching style is ok though, but he has lots of and lots of homework. Besides the large amount of hw, the difficulty of hw is also very hard. His 181A class needs you to spend tons of time and energy if you want to have a good grade. The exams also have the same difficulty with hw, so it's hard to make a good grade in his 181A class.
Looks out for his students, and offers help. However, last midterm and final were too detached from coursework. Two full-problem set homeworks per week, this'll feel like two 4-unit classes alone. And homeworks must be done alone.
He is an amazing teacher. He taught me so much statistics thanks to his fantastic lecture notes and S-tier homework sets. But I always watched the podcasts, since he always made me feel so tense during lectures.
Salute to DQ. Great Professor with heavy HW due biweekly. Midterms are hard but the final is easy to balance our performances.
Prof DQ is great. Please take this man if you have the opportunity. His lectures are amazing and he keeps them entertaining with jokes. He is so helpful and kind in office hours. He is by far the best teacher I've ever had in almost all categories. 20B is a hard class, and DQ does everything he can to make it easier.
Professor is very passionate about math which makes him proficient and effective at teaching the subject. Has a great sense of humor and captures your attention.
He is very passionate about teaching and has wonderful lecture notes with good examples as well as in-class problems to go along with the material. Overall a very good and helpful teacher though the class was a bit difficult due to the pacing.
Awful. He made this class unnecessarily hard.
BEST PROFESSOR EVER!!! However, the homework is time consuming and the material is challenging especially for those who have no foundation in calculus. It is clear to see that he wants us all to understand the concepts. The lecture slides are some of the most concise and clear slides I have seen, so you don't have to worry about bad handwriting.
Best math professor I had in the Mathematics Department. Professor Quarfoot is good at teaching mathematics, as I had him for Math 20B, but I can tell he is good at any of the subjects. He has fantastic lectures that are very entertaining and engage me to learn. He is the best professor I have ever had and is a true inspiration for math.
Excellent professor. Very organized, straightforward and dedicated toward helping students learn the material. His lectures are engaging and involve the perfect balance of learning material and problem solving. The slides are very helpful for homework and exams. The exams are not too difficult as they are constructed similar to the homework.
amazing teacher, passionate about his subject, really tries to make sure you understand. I only got a C because i didnt study for the final LOL, but it was good
Probably the best math professor I've ever had. His lectures are incredibly organized and easy to follow, and he frequently uses them to teach random valuable lifelong habits. The course content was difficult, but he made it relatively simple.
Office Hours helped a lot, and Professor Quarfoot would always go over any and all questions you had.
Dr. Quarfoot was a very knowledgeable professor and always made lecture easy to follow. Office Hours always had a pretty long wait, but he would always go over every question you had until completion. Exams were difficult but not unfair, and could be passed with good effort. There was a lot of homework but it helped prep for exams.
You can tell he's definitely passionate about math, which makes you more engaged in his lectures and also just more interested in concepts beyond the course syllabus. I loved taking this class even though I previously had already covered most of this material.
One of the most difficult classes I've taken. If you want a good grade you have to know the homework (of which there is a lot) like the back of your hand and understand the lecture material inside and out, because the exams are SUPER difficult. That being said, he's a great teacher and you will learn a lot. Don't do this for an easy grade!
Lots of very difficult homework and tests are hard as well
Blamed the class after everyone did poorly on the first midterm and then gave a very difficult final.
Very hard concepts and you will spend a lot of time just trying to complete the HW and understand the lectures. Funny guy tho
Horrible. Made the class unnecessarily difficult.
Teacher is kind of quirky but nice. Lectures are not mandatory but discussions are (you can miss like 2). I took this class during the TA strike so the grade is probably inflated.
I'm typically a pretty good student and I've never received a grade like this before. He made the class unnecessarily difficult on a level I've never seen before. He gave excessive amounts of homework with very difficult problems and made the exams very difficult. There was also no curve, which seemed pretty harsh given the difficulty of the class.
Amazing prof that clearly genuinely cares about students. Very entertaining lectures.
You either like this guy or hate him. The only teacher who made me understand the basics of math. He makes exams hard, but nothing that you haven't seen in class. A lot of HW, but just do it on time. Textbook provided online. Class can get boring but he tries
He cares greatly about student success in the course. I liked how he had life tips in each lecture presentation because they proved to be insightful. He doesn't provide extra credit and there is a lot of homework in the course. Not too hard of a course to manage.
I genuinely enjoyed Professor Quarfoot's class. If you study for the tests and go to office hours, you will definitely pass. The class is somewhat difficult because of how quickly the topics are taught, but the professor did a great job making lectures entertaining and informative.
one of the best professors and the best math professor I've ever had. His lectures are super entertaining and engaging, and he makes it very difficult to feel lost. Homeworks are hard and you should probably find people to do them with. Note - you do have to not hate math to enjoy his class, and his tests are hard (but fair)
This class is genuinely one of the most interesting and information classes I have taken at UCSD. Professor DQ is a very engaging lecturer and very helpful during office hours. However my depression worsened this quarter because I'm quite bad at math and almost failed the class. I would only recommend this class if you're a real math nerd.
After just the first lecture in Math183, I felt compelled to write this because it's evident he's an exceptional professor. His caring nature, clear and structured teaching, along with a great sense of humor, make learning a pleasure. Truly an A+ professor from the start.
David Quarfoot is an outstanding teacher that cares deeply about each and every student he comes across and it is very evident. He doesn't just lecture at you, he lectures with you, taking deeper approaches into the why it was wrong rather than just stating that it was wrong. Although hes a tough grader,he is funny/mannered and makes math exciting.
Oh my God this guy is pretentious. In lecture he makes remarks that belittle people with
Calc 2 is hard in general despite the professor you take it with. He wants his students to succeed and tries to make class a little more interesting with his humor. No cheat sheets are allowed but he gives students previous years midterms and finals to give them a heads up of what to study. Around 35 people failed but the curve is really generous.
Homework due twice a week. 2 grading criteria at least. Really does belittle students by comparing "A+ students" to "C- students." Very discouraging. Did his best to teach the content, but oh my god was this class so draining. You will have to commit a lot of time to this course + go to office hours- trust it will help u succeed.
Despite having experience with other fields of math, I feared statistics due to some past experiences. However, after taking this class, I really find statistics fascinating and wish I could have taken more classes with him. (It's my last quarter) Professor Quarfoot is one of the best professors I've taken at UCSD. Really recommend that guy. :)
Professor DQ runs a challenging but rewarding class. Expect a heavy workload, but the lectures and office hours are worthwhile. I found unstuck study and the free textbook very helpful for staying on top of the material.
He gives a lot of hard questions in homework and tough exams but offers 4 OH a week and gives clear explanations on questions, which will help you establish a more solid understanding of math. So if you are interested in math, he is a great professor. If you take a course only because of the major requirement, avoid him.
Professor Quarfoot was my Math 2 instructor. Within all of his lectures he really addresses his dislike of calculators and how his students shouldn't be using them, which tended to be a bit frustrating at times. Also, you will come to see him mention his nephew multiple times, which shows he cares about him. Overall, means well and cares for us.
Professor Quarfoot genuinely cares about your learning. Keep in mind you will have homework every week that takes approximately 4 hrs to complete so manage your time well and attend lectures. I'm bad at math and I don't believe it was that difficult and learned a lot in this course so it's very beneficial. Good luck!
Quarfoot is great! He lectures well, homework is manageable, and ALEKS is easy if you're consistent. However, his class won't help with the MPE. If you expect MATH 2 to prep you for it, you're wrong. You'll need to STUDY on your own. He's great though! His class is oversimplified, but he's nice. He's a sweet guy, the content just isn't the MPE.
Quarfoot was really funny & it was entertaining to go to class. There is homework every week that takes ~4 hours to do, but it you plan well enough you should be fine! It is a good class to refresh your mind if you haven't done math in a while, but you will have to study for the MPE. Quarfoot is a fun professor who truly cares about his students.
Very kind and funny. Lectures were very entertaining and helpful. A lot of homework but manageable. Overall a great professor who's passionate about math.
Was clear in math, genuinely cared about the students understanding and it wasn't boring he'd make jokes here and there and overall had my attention. lecture would go by fast
For math 2 I think he is great if you want to move onto the next level. He gives you all the resources to be successful, you just have to put in the work tbh. Would recommend taking.
i took math 2 with prof Quarfoot and I really liked his teaching style. he engages with students during class and actually makes lecture enjoyable, even at 8am. there was homework due once a week however I think the department is changing this.
Great professor! The homework is not bad at all. No midterms and your final is taking the MPE. I was at his office hours nearly every week, not necessarily for homework but to just talk. He genuinely cares and wants to make sure his students understand and do well in the class. Would take again!
DQ was really chill prof, this was a P/NP for me and we have to go to tutoring at least four times a week in order to pass the class. However, the workload was not too much and he was pretty chill in class. We did have to go to tutoring four times a week but it was worth it bc I passed the class and skipped two math courses after re-taking the MPE.
Tough content, homework is hard as well, but the professor is super good. Very enthusiastic, obviously cares what we learn, and the man loves what he teaches - which makes his lecture bearable at 8:00 AM (dreadful hours). Creative homework problems, they're challenging, but they guide learning a lot. Impossible without watching lectures.
Prof. Quarfoot is by far the best lecturer I've had at UCSD. He captures every topic in complicated class with expertise and brings it to lecture in the most easy-to-understand and engaging way possible. His command of the classroom is genuinely like no other.
Dude, DQ is by far the best prof at ucsd. I think what helps is that he has a background of teaching at middle and highschools so i think thats where he gets that vibe from. But either way he makes a hard topic much easier to understand in the lecture slides. Great guy...great personality...easy to talk to. only thing is the homework is alot
Great professor, great lecturer, the exams were hard but they were most definitely fair. The grading is pretty harsh but at the same time, it's very clear. Besides the extremely hard grading, I feel like I finished this class learning a lot of things thanks to DQ, despite having a B- or B.
Funny guy. Very straightforward when it comes to what you need to know and do in order to be successful in the school's math department, especially if you're starting from this class.
Had to drop with a W, the workload is insane. Homework is extremely difficult compared to what's covered in lecture, and the exams are brutal with no cheat sheet (while every other professor allows one). He's a good lecturer, but as a CS major, this class left me no time for anything else. HW is 2-3 hrs each, twice a week!! Take someone else
No cheat sheets and imo more formulas to know than calc and linalg. 6 weeks in, theres around 8-9 different application RVs each w 4 equations on top of many others, also 2 hws a week each 3-4 hrs none dropped. His worldview is that you're smarter than most people and cheat sheets won't help you in the real world. I disagree..just take someone else
Still in the middle of this class (week 7). Bombed the first midterm. Regardless, I truly mean to say that Quarfoot is a genius. Every aspect of his teaching is catered towards the students. I might do bad, but this dudes integrity as a teacher and educator in a research based institution is remarkable. Its time to do hard stuff, dont back down now
Oh no.. My GPA!!!! BYEBYE
The class itself is easy but he makes a lot of students really uncomfortable. He says things like he finds numbers sexy and other stuff along those lines.
Nice guy and fun personality. He assigns 3 homework assignments per week that are expected to take upwards of 3 hours per which can take a huge chunk of time. You can miss a couple of days for attendance and miss points on homework, and still get full points for the class. He doesn't extend assignments or allow you to miss, even for good reasons.
If you sit on the end of the aisle he walks up and down and looks at your paper and will publicly shame you for doing anything wrong. The homework was unreasonably long and the word problems are really confusing. Also, the 2-3b exam is your only option to move up now, and you can't move up until you pass it. You basically have to self study tbh.
Lots of homework. Pass/ No pass class.
Sometimes the graders take points off homework for ridiculous reasons. The lectures consist of him rambling about random stuff like him calling numbers "sexy". Despite the math being objectively "easy", the time limit on the PUP-E was awful. Even after studying flashcards and spending hours on HW, I didn't pass. The only way out is passing.
Got placed in math 2 despite taking calculus in high school. Lectures all consisted of objectively simple subjects but we had about 2-3 hours of homework 3 times a week. Studied a lot for the place up exam and still failed. He makes it difficult to pass out of the class.
Very hard to pass out with the content he teaches compared to the tests, makes others very uncomfortable in class with his word use.
Time management is gonna be your best friend for this class, considering the homework load he gave out for us (3 hw sets per week and takes 2-3 hours per set). His teaching style might be different from others, but I had no problems with it. Utilize ASC Math @ APM because the tutors helped me with assignments and prepared me for the PUP-Exam.
He's one of the only math profs where I felt like I didn't need to do tons of studying outside lecture just to understand what's going on, good lecturer. he does give homework 2x a week, roughly 4-6 problems, but on each homework he gives the full solution so u could technically copy if u want. no cheat sheet but u can use graphing calculators
Lectures are clear and well taught, but the homework assignments are long and tedious. Exams make up 70% of the grade and aren't conceptually difficult, but no cheat sheet or formula sheet is allowed, so you're expected to memorize countless formulas.
Took this class pass/no pass and passed it. Hw is 10 problems due MWF. Gives you 5 opportunities to miss class and hw and not judgmental at all cus you r in math 2. He's really smart and is incredibly helpful with everything. Only reason y i didn't give him a 5/5 was cus the class doesn't help on retaking the mpe. No midterm and no final.
Very interesting man to say the least but his class was not difficult as long as you keep up with the 3 weekly homework's and attend lectures. I used the homework problems to study for the PUP-E bc he didn't really specify what would be on the exam. My advice is to just practice his hw sets over and over again for the PUP-E bc they helped me pass.
Quarfoot has a subjective sense of humor (I found him funny personally). Class is based on attendance and homework. The final was taking the place up exam however I felt he insufficiently prepared the class to pass due to the lack of tests and quizzes within the course.
Interesting professor, with humor that's not everyone's cup of tea. Has a different teaching style than most, but I think it works for this class and gets students motivated to get better in math. Overall, HW can be time-consuming and sometimes feels like busy work, but studying HWs is the best way to pass the PUP-E at the end of the course.
