I think that his first impression can be deceiving- after you get to know him he is a helpful, intelligent man. I enjoyed the class- gives lots of study sessions and take home type stuff.. Will help in everything.. RECOMMENDED!

Keep up with your homework and go to class and things shouldn't be too bad. He's standoffish at first, but warms up by midterm. Will answer any questions and explain things over and over until you understand it. Give bonus points on every test.
this comes from a rather slow student. he's a good teacher if you're looking for someone very intelectual, but if you think on a very physical level, don't take him. his main point in the class is to teach by the calculator, which I find frustrating.
If you're looking to fail, here's the class for you. Teaches at least two different lessons a class and will confuse you easily. He could be helpful during office hours but I felt like I was in his way. Don't take him!!!!

I'm pretty good in math so I thought the material was easy. However, he is not that great of a teacher to take in a harder math class--thats why i got a B instead of an A. Only take him as a last resort and if no one else is open. Stay away!!!

he tries to make u look stupid when he answers ur questions. he takes off points if u dont show what he feels is enough work. even with the right answers u will still do badly on his tests. i am good at math and i would never take or recommend him.
I find him very helpful if you do your part. If you have problems, he is VERY willing to work with you and give you resources that will help.

The class is boring and he goes to fast to get any understanding. He talks about assignments but does not make it clear when they are due and you will miss them. He makes the tests extremely hard even though he says it comes straight from the notes. Avoid
I am not wonderful in math, and I came out of Dr. Ray's class with an A. I think he's a great teacher and would take him again!
This man is the Devil! He speaks much too fast for you to comprehend. He requires online quizzes, but only gives you 30 minutes to complete 2 hours worth of work. I am a straight A student and I had to drop his class. BEWARE!!!
He's moderate in teaching and being able to understand him and what he is teaching. You'll just have to pay attention and keep on the ball to get at least a B.

He is very challenging, but knows his stuff. Some of the rules are strict, but if you follow them, you would do fine. If you are planning on advancing in math, he would be the perfect teacher to start your math career with.
his class is very very easy as long as you stay on top of things. he doesnt assign a lot of homework but he doesnt take it up until the end of the semester so it is easy to put it off. if you do the practice tests and the homework you should have no problem making at least a B in the class
he's not a bad person_he has a little sense of humor---HOWEVER! i would only perfer him if and ONlY if you stay on top of things and already know the class. quiz=hard!if you do your hmwk(& understand it) you'll do better on the test. one plus= you can earn extra points for the tests

I am terrible at math, but Mr.Ray helped me through it. He was always more than willing to help. That's more than I can say for some in the math dept. If you want someone who will help you, take him! He also has a great sense of humor!

Avoid if you can. Goes too fast in class and doesn't make sure everyone understands. You are pretty much on your own. I used to be pretty decent at math and I almost failed this course, not because I was lazy, but he really just wasnt a very good teacher.
hard class. you have to keep up with a notebook that gets very frustrating to keep up with. the notebook is due at the end of the semester, but if you take him do your notebook along the way and not at the end of the semester. goes fast. explanations are not always clear.

It's a good thing I took College Algebra while I was in high school. If I hadn't of I probably wouldn't understand a work Mr. Ray was saying. He goes a little too fast in class. Most of time people are rapidly writing notes instead of listening so nobody understands what is going on.

I never had seen any teacher teach math so fast. He does not take things in a step-by-step process. He takes things in a rush process and no one will learn anything this way.

I did so good in math in high school. I absolutely HATE this class! People run away from this class! Run as FAR as possible!! The guy goes through the problems too fast and doesn't explain anything. We are on chapter 5 and he says we're STILL behind, yet the other 140 classes are on chapter 3!!! Can somebody explain that to me?!?!
I took Pre-Cal in high school so I was pretty prepared so I thought that he was pretty easy. I like how he gives worksheets and quizzes on blackboard..if you study those you can do well on the tests and don't have to do the homework...and we don't have to turn in a notebook.
I had Precalc in high school and I had a math prerequisite at another college. I thought I get the info like I did in High school; I was a quick learner in which I made As.
I took Mr. Ray in the summer and bot is he pretty easy and very understandable. Take him for your A or B in Math 140
People this guy hardly explains anything he teaches in class. His tests are hard and the highest I have made on them are 80. The only good thing about his class is you can take quizzes and worksheets online til you get a perfect score. If it wasn't for them, I probably wouldn't be passing this class. Whatever you do, DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!!!!!!
He is a pretty fair teacher he does teach fast but will slow down and go over things again if asked. if you learn what to write down and pay attention too yu will do fine because he will repeat the same example a couple of different ways. i got a C in the class but part of it was my own fault.

Seriously, the easiest math teacher I have had since freshman year in highschool. Most of the points in the class come from quizes and worksheets on blackboard which you can take as many times as you want to get them right. I STRONGLY ENCOURGE TAKING HIM.
He's smart, but he's not smart. His tests are pretty hard and he give his quizzes online. He doesn't tell you when the quizzes are sometimes but he does give u one day at the end of the semester to make up the ones that you missed. He sort of flies through the really hard parts of the course and takes forever on the easy stuff.

First, I suck at math. Ray is a pretty hard teacher. He moves really fast and expects you to already know a lot of things (which I didn't). I was lost by the 2nd week and it just got worse from there. But he really does try to help. Lots of us were failing and he gave us projects to boost our grades, which is why I got a D instead of an F!
I took this class in the summer and he was great!! all the quizzes were up for 2 days and you could take them as many times as you wanted to get an A and that goes for the homework online as well. I don't buy textbooks, so I am not going to recommend it for this class either. Just take good notes and buy the Trig supplements and you should be ok!
He is sooo hard if you don't already know the material. If you are good in algebra than you will do okay, but if you are just trying to learn don't take him. He acts like you should already know and he is just reviewing. He can't teach!

I highly advise everyone reading this to choose any professor other than David Ray for Math 140. While he cares ardently for his Smart Board and for appearing intimidating, it is obvious that he does not care for teaching, nor can he teach. Boring, standoffish, grades arbitrarily, cancels appointments.

There are good things and bad things about him, though overall I would say don't take him. He goes too fast and is next to useless. He does do homework online (unlimited tries) and quizzes online (three tries), but he's a cruddy teacher. If you can avoid him, do so. He makes you do group assignments out of class time too. Dr. Ray wasn't that bad. I made a B in Precal He did give a lot of work. We had a group project, an online quiz, a Test, and a Turn In just about every week. Despite the fact that we had so much work, he is very helpful. He is really nice, and the class gives you a good work ethic. If you don't want to put in work, then don't take his course!!!
Don't ask him for help on anything, because he will belittle you for asking. he is a terrible teacher, avoid taking his classes if possible. he assigns group projects which are a pain because there is not a lot of time to do them, and you have to struggle to get members of the group together. he relies so heavily on his smartboard. terrible teacher

In all honestly, I don't see how this guy is still teaching. Any questions asked by his students, he answers them hatefully or with a sarcastic comment. Help from this guy is a no-go, you're better off going to get a tutor or going to the math lab.

This class is horrible. He is a horrible teacher. Is hardly ever willing to help. All his homework and quizzes are online. He does not teach at all. He only picks problems from the book and works them...never explaining steps. He stands directly in front of what he is writing so by the time you get that problem copied he is on the next one. AVOID!

You need to know LOTS about computers prior to taking this class, if you don't know excel or word, or anything else to do with computers, you will fail this class. It would probably be a good idea to take ALL the computer courses before. If you don't know computers, he doesn't give a crap.

Unless you are really comfortable in Math do not take this guy. However he does drop lowest test and quiz. Attendance at the end of the semester is added as bonus points. He isn't a sensitive buy so be prepared when you ask a question.
Very difficult! I took 100 as a refresher expected it to be fairly easy but realize it was nearly impossible. No one in the class made over a 67 on the first 4 tests. At the end of the corse he started posting practice tests... made a HUGE difference. I practically taught myself the material. He goes way too fast to understand what's going on!
I took his online Math 140 class. Most useless and unhelpful professor I've ever had. Sent him more than 12 e-mails throughout the semester that went unanswered, then when I questioned him on it before the end of the semester he got an attitude. I WOULD NOT recommend him, especially in an online setting unless you're a math whiz!

I made a 99 as overall grade. He gives plenty of bonus points and opportunities to fix material.
You better know your stuff before you get in there. He does give bonus points but I still struggled because he doesn't explain the material very well. I passed one test the entire semester excluding the final but I still made a C. A friend taught me everything on the final two days before and I understood more then than I did from him all year.

i MADE SURE TO TAKE HIM AGAIN FOR MATH 110. I HAD HIM FOR MATH 100 AND MADE AN A. I LOVE HOW HE HAS THE QUIZZES AND HOMEWORK ONLINE AND YOU CAN TAKE THEM AS MANY TIMES AS YOU NEED TO TO GET A 100 GRADE ON THEM. IT HELPED A LOT WITH GETTING MY A IN HIS CLASS. David Ray is a good teacher. He gives extra credit for showing up to class everyday during the week, all homework in online and you get multiple times to get the homework right, and the quizzes you can also take multiple times. His test are hard, but if you do the practice test he gives you then you can make a good grade.
I took this class online and was very worried about the toughness of it. I passes with an A but worked hard for it (which is all he expects). He explains things thoroughly on the lecture videos and MyMathLab helps with understanding also. Answered all of my emails quickly and explained anything I didn't understand. Very good professor!

I have been there with bad math teachers and Dr. Ray is not one of them. Everything is explained with great clarity. Although I do believe spends too much explaining math concepts that the class could do without. He give extra points for showing up for class. And you will difinetely earn your A.

Dr. Ray is a great math teacher. Everything he explains is very clear. If you review, you won't forget how to figure a math equation. But, homework is 10% of your grade and it is very time consuming. You have to work for your grade. And attendance is not mandatory but there is extra credit to be given if you do. Uses MyMathLab.
I enjoyed this class. Very clear about what to study for tests. Sometimes homework was time consuming but necessary. He gave loads of extra credit if you completed your homework and showed up to class. Lectures were boring but if you don't go you get way behind. Also very helpful if you are willing to ask for it.

Do not expect an easy A. I can not stress enough how important it is to attend class and do homework. Not only will you likely need the extra credit, but you will get behind quickly if you do not attend. You will need to know or learn how to use Excel and Microsoft Word to do worksheets. Come to class!! Do the homework and quizzes. You get unlimited chances to make A's on them all. Test are difficult, but if you come to class and do the homework and quizzes you can pull b's out all day long on the test. THE FINAL IS STUPID EASY. 90% of it can be done on the calculator.
100-110 the best instructor ever! Gives extra credits for attending, much extra credits for each test if u ginish the online homework and got 80, quizes online(take as many times for two days), fair tests, vedio and audio lectures online( i like it the best), hard worksheets, always helpful and clear on lectures, i wish he teaches 210 (recommended)
If you are lucky enough to get an email response it will be a run on sentence with no answers other than get your work done and if its late its a 0. His quizzes are different from what is taught in MyMathLab and he seems to forget that many of his online students are working professionals, not 19 year old kids. I hired a tutor.
Horrible Professor. Makes assignments and only gives you two or three days to complete. His stuff is ridiculously hard and does not explain how to do it well at all. He also gave me a months worth of work to do in a week leaving me hardly any time to study for final. First F Ive made in college, and Ive been in school for three years.
He's not that bad honestly you just have to keep up with homework. This professor gives you plenty of homework. He grades heavy on his worksheets but he does let you redo them if you made a bad grade. His test are mostly multiple choice and not that hard if you go to tutoring and pay attention in class.
Worse teacher i've ever had he is not clear with his assignments he teaches one time for each chapter and the next class we move on to the next chapter the week that we have chapter 5 test he teaches for chapter 6 which is confusing he does not help at all never get responds from the emails ive sent he is not a helping or understanding professor.

I really enjoyed having Mr. Ray for Math 100! He gives you plenty of time to get the homework done on MyMathLab and his online quizzes arent that hard. If you go to class and pay attention youll do good on his tests.
This teacher needs to find a new profession immediately. Not only are the few times he gives any feedback passive aggressive and vague, he does literally nothing to help his students. Granted, I'm already not that good at math, but I've always passed math classes with at least B's. This class is very online based. You have about 3 different types of online assignments. I missed 1 homework assignment online and my overall class average went from a 78 to a 53 and he wouldn't let me take it for a late grade. Good luck
I've never had a problem in math until I took him. He doesn't answer emails, and like many have said, very vague and passive-aggressive when you ask for help. He requires way too much for a 100 level math. You have online quizzes and homework, tests every couple of weeks, worksheets, and SLOs. Should be a 4 credit class. Avoid him at all costs.

I took his online summer session College Algebra and it was way more work than I expected, but it was after all, a semester crammed into 9 weeks. I loved the detailed videos and his clever use of colors. If he was graphing, it was a color dedicated to each equation and he'd even do the written math in that color so you'd know later on when studying
Ray speeds through his lectures and leaves some students feeling lost. The lab he taught did not line up with the class I was in, and that did not seem to matter to him.
Very rude and not an approachable person. He makes you feel not smart when you ask a question. His online homework assignments are difficult and so are his tests. I do not recommend.

I would personally take him again. He gives you extra credit for showing up. His lectures can get boring at times and you will rarely get out of class early. His worksheets are awful, but you only have 2 of them. Lots of homework and quizzes, but you have multiple attempts on the quizzes. He drops two lowest tests grades and one lowest quiz grade.
I would not recommend taking this guy. He has a ton of homework which is by no means easy for a basic level class. His labs have absolutely nothing to do with what your doing in the homework and test. There was a ton a work to get done and not enough time to do anything. I wouldnt recommend anyone taking this guy for anything ever.

My main complaints are his inability to make his assignments accessible on both Windows and Apple platforms. I had to take every quiz on my phone, because the symbols and fractions would not show up on my MacBook. He has a super late turn around time for grading. He is not an instructor that needs to teach an online course.
Literally the worst. Doesnt help you at all. When youre failing hell say its your fault and he cant do anything about it. He responds to email with an attitude. UT Martin needs to look into him ASAP! I took David Ray for Math 140 and it was terrible. Sitting down to do one weeks worth of homework for this class took me 6 hours and 30 minutes on average. He is not understanding, does not help at all, and UTM should seriously reconsider hiring him. Everything is set up poorly and he makes the class 1000x harder.
Although Professor Ray is a super funny and likable guy I would never take this class again and would not recommend it to anyone who does not need the Genetics requirement for graduation. This class is so hard by itself and even if you think you have a good understanding of the subject the exams make you feel like you don't, they are so tedious!
He doesn't respond to emails very often, but when he does they're very blunt. The thing that helped me pass was going back and watching his lectures on Canvas. Between re-watching lectures and HOURS of homework weekly, be prepared to spend a lot of time for this class. His quizzes and homework are unlimited attempts, which is a plus.

I took an online Math140 class with Dr. Ray. The amount of assignments is insane. If you have questions and email him best of luck. He won't explain anything and takes forever to correct his own mistakes (missing notes and lecture videos, incorrect grades). I learned more through YouTube videos than Dr. Ray. MyMathLab will be your teacher, not him.
