I have Known so many teachers and a few masters. Theacher David Reddall is among the masters. I would like to have the opportunity to learn more from him in English 102.
This guy uses every word in the dictionary when he speaks. Sounds good but i dont understand a thing he is saying. He is a slack pushover who you can easily coast through and get a decent mark. Any class you go to is pretty much pointless as 60% of my mark is yet to be detrmined in the final week as per 40% the rest of the whole year.
He gave me a F even though i hand in all my assignment and try really hard in his class.
Worst teacher ever!
Scattered at first but put things together nicely. Wild vocab and has the ability to make weird ideas seem fun. Told us today that it is not enough to think a work of literature sucks--we need to be able to explain WHY we think so, and that's when real thinking starts.
Although dave sometimes has difficult being one time, he is a genius of a man. Will use more words you have never heard of than you can count. Good Teacher as long as you speak up. Good class to raise the GPA. Ask Dave about "baring the device" on the LRT.
He wrote down everything he said, but was ultimately a good teacher. A little slow at getting back assignments.
Show up for all of his classes! if you dont he will call you out on it! you wont want to go though cause it will be the worse lecture you will ever sit through! the worst prof ever! not even kidding!
HE IS AN AWFUL TEACHER. HIS LECTURES ARE LONG AND BORING, AND VERY HARD TO NOT FALL ASLEEP IN. HE USES A VARIETY OF VOCABULARY THAT IS INCONPREHENSIBLE TO MOST PEOPLE. HIS ASSIGNMENTS ARE ALWAYS LATE, AND HIS TESTS ARE REDICULOUS. ALTHOUGH HE IS AN EXCELLENT MARKER OF ESSAYS THAT YOU DO.
He's hilarious and very helpful. Sometimes takes longer to grade papers than he should but always makes lots of comments and is happy to help.
He is not approachable. Procrastinates and pushes due dates down too much. Horrible notes. Condescending. LATE on everything. Always "loses" emails and attachements. Does not respond to emails. Too much to list....
His Lectures are quite long and not too interesting at times. He has a very large vocabulary, that is not always used in everyday speach. sometimes it's very hard to understand what it is he is saying. He never has assignments in on time. I handed one in 3 weeks ago that I am still waiting to get back, when everyone else has gotten theirs back.
He's funny and helpful.
He isn't the greatest prof I have ever had. He's very unorganized, and doesn't always return assignments until weeks later. He takes marks off for word choice, as he thinks there are better words to use. Has a wide vocabulary, but part to understand at times. Don't think I would take a class from him again if I had the option. Just not my style.
I like David. He really does try to have us all do well. His language is a little difficult at times, but just ask him when you don't understand. If nothing else this class will broaden your vocabulary. Knows his stuff, and will let you revise papers to up your mark.
Brilliant scholar- amazing- does not like absenteeism, disrespect, lack of participation. TRUTH- He does dock synonym choice-which made me a little mad, but returns assigns VERY promptly, offers revision & is VERY organized. NOT slacker friendly. I GUARANTEE you will get the grade you deserve/earn. I am disappointed by the misleading comments here.
Dr. Reddall is a genius. He is a scholar without a doubt. Simply the best English professor/instructor/teacher I have ever had. He marks essays easy and he gives valuable comments to you. Attend all of his classes; respect his lectures; be interactive in his discussions and you will be able to get your grade that you deserve.
David is very smart, however, he makes you feel not so smart. He is very critical on every word you say. He has a vast vocabulary and is often hard to understand. Somewhat of an easy marker. Pushes dates back quite often. Participation in lectures is key; he likes those that do. Overall, David is not very nice, comes off as a rude person. GOOD LUCK
He's got a wild vocab and doesn't like idiots. If you want help, you can get it, and it makes a real difference. Seems scary but really wants you to kick ass.
David does have a very vast vocabulary which is a nice change from some boring profs, but you must be awake and prepared for all of his classes. Better instructor for philosophy/arts students. As for grading: you will get the grade that you deserve. If you want marks without doing readings or attending class - go elsewhere.
The text book quick access was never used, he never returned anyones emails and handed assignments back late. He also is an extremely hard marker. NEVER TAKE HIS CLASS. David was rude and immature towards me.
Reddall put up with a lot of silly behavior from disrespectful people and still gave interesting, funny lectures. He doesn't like giggly fools--if you are one, avoid him. If you like to think, he's the man.
Yes he is a hard marker, but he also has a passion for the subject he teaches. Very random unsturctured classes that can be hard at times to take notes from. Expects you to do the reading, and to talk about it in class. Makes jokes about everything that keeps it all interesting. Just do your homework and work hard and hes great!!
His nickname is "Disco". This is the most important fact you need to know about him.
"Disco", as his friends and favourite students call him, uses lots of big words. But he is funny. I recommend the class. Make sure you do the reading though. And call him "Disco" to get on his good side.
The greatest prof at GMac. An honour & privilege to be in any of his classes. Eloquent, hilarious, brilliant--a master of his craft. Provides excellent notes. Covers everything he tests you on. Don't act like an imbecile or say "like" constantly. Expects material to be read, exams to be studied for, & time & effort on papers. David is the bomb.
I am dissapointed because a lot of the comments on this site are misleading! If you want to think, Reddall will make you think! He is the most brilliant professor that I've ever had, and it's an honour to be in his class. If you are a lazy slacker and think you can just float through this course, stay away! This is a warning to ya!
David knows what he's talking about & often seeks the opinion of students, however if you have a different opinion or reply in a manner that he thinks is incorrect, he has a way of making you feel stupid. The effort you put into his class reflects your grade. Quizzes are fair, though you must read the required texts.
One of the best profs I've met. He is very helpful and funny. However, he is very strict regarding attendance, participation, and reading the required text. He's vast use of vocabulary, however, is kinda hard to comprehend. But the way he marks is fair = 50/50 form and content. Got an A in his class so I think he is very good :)
David is brilliant, and as long as you are committed to learning you will be fine. Do your readings, add to the discussions and do your part to keep the Socratic method alive. Always willing to help and is incredibly fair on marking.
Hilarious! Never a boring class with this guy!
I had Mr. Reddall (sorry, Dr. Reddall) as a Prof four years ago and was reading this just for fun. All I have to say is that he was a great Prof, and didn't mind being teased about his vocab. For all of the people on here that say they could not understand him, I can only suggest they get a dictionary.
An absolutely brilliant professor, one of my favorites at Grant Macewan. He has a large vocabulary, and he will call you out if you speak without thinking about what you're saying. Overall though a nice, extremely funny individual.
What can I say...Dave is awesome...intelligent...a little wordy but its English...deal with it! I hated english in high school but loved Dave's class...he's not for the weak of heart as he'll call you out if you say something stupid...but he will respect you for the effort
Seems like people are torn on this guy. I personally disliked his condescending attitude towards students. His verbose lectures made the time drag. Although his tests and papers were fair, he made the class highly unenjoyable. Show up & bring your text, or he will call you out with rude comments. An awful instructor for an intro class. Stay Away!
It's true, he called people out for not reading and I loved it! He wanted you to learn and talk in class and that made the class better, not worse!
He is very unorganized and never hands back any assignments. He is very condescending. Overall, I would recommend avoiding his prof.
I had the pleasure of being in David's class at the U of L. One of the few profs I have ever had that left a lasting impression. His passion for the material becomes quite obvious. If you participate and complete assigned readings you will leave the course an enlightened individual with a greater sense of perspective on the world. He is very fair.
Basically, if you have a knack for writing, Dave's your guy. Success in this class requires pretty good attendance, constant use of the texts, and a genuine interest in literature. Without the above, he will be your worst nightmare.
He's rude and Inconsiderate, verbally attacks his students and uses his high vocabulary to insult anyone who speaks up. He encourages students to speak up yet belittles them in every answer they give. Worst professor I has and I went to every class and did every reading. Stay away!
If you read and think, you'll have fun; if you don't, he'll make you feel silly.
He has a very Esoteric style of teaching. Uses language that's sometimes hard to grasp. He has a one tract way of teaching, and will not deviate from this. He comes off as extremely pretensious, and only considers Adhoc mocking, harsh mocking. He's not above belittling and laughing at an idea expressed in class, yet wants people to speak up.
The voracious wit and unique verbosity of Hitchens is present in Dr. Reddall; combined with an apathetic, contemptuously cynical outlook towards socio-political implementations similar to that of Wells. Make this a course worth taking with a prof well worth the price of admission.
Dr. Reddall is an amazingly intelligent man with a passion for his subject. He can be hard to take if you don't do the work or the reading, because he has little patience for fools, but he encourages lively discussion; his class can be really awesome if everyone's intelligent and interested. Don't go into his class expecting an easy mark.
Passionate, engaging, inspired & brilliant; a world-class pedagogue; ranks with the likes of Harvard’s Sandel. His professionalism, raw & fierce talent, dedication, enthusiasm, humour, empathy & sincerity elevate the status of our university & the quality of our parchments. Beware, those who don motley, for the Dr shall not suffer fools lightly.
Dr. Reddall's vocabulary is intimidating, but it challenges you to think more critically about the words you choose to use. I enjoyed taking his class and plan to sign up for more! Take Professor Redall's class if you want to learn.
He is a great teacher if you are serious about learning!
He wants you to succeed but is not willing to carry you. Read the textbook, know your stuff, and don't be afraid do to speak in class. He can come across as rude but this is because many students have no desire to actually think critically. Work hard in his course and you will get a good mark. Period.
Good teacher but he likes to show his superiority by using large words ALL the time. He's willing to help you, and he isn't a jerk when he's grading although, he doesn't like punctuation errors. WHOOPS! He also talks about the purple onion a lot, it's closed now so I'm sure he's devastated. Never saw him without an energy drink or coffee in hand.
I don't know why he has such a good rating. I had to drop his class I could not deal with him any longer. Hes such a hard marker, hes rude to his students and makes fun of them in front of the whole class for saying wrong answers, he thinks hes funny but hes not, and he never passes back your work although he says he will pass it back next class..?
Dr. Reddall is very intelligent and really cares about his students. His only flaw is that he actually expects students to do their work and think critically about the text.
Still the worst prof I have ever had at Macewan. Avoid taking his class at all costs!
I had him at the U of L. David cares about his students and he actually has some pretty great outlooks on education. I will admit he does appear to speak and act outlandish sometimes, but this is insignificant compared to the valuable knowledge he has. I actually admire David's level of education and I consider my self fortunate to have known him.
Since taking his Writing 1000 course I have received very high parks on my assignments. He is a walking thesaurus and can scare student by his knowledge of the English language. If you are using Giltrow for a textbook, really absorb the information, you will be amazed at how your writing will improve. He can be a hard marker, so work hard!
If you're passionate about literature and considering majoring in English, I highly recommend Dr. Reddall. For everyone else, you'd be better off with a more typical professor if it's an option. If you're an ESL student, find another course as his vocabulary is difficult enough for native speakers to fully understand. Smartest person I've ever met.
Rad teacher if you're willing and able to take notes and expand on them in your own time. Went to his office hours every week to get clarity on the course load and he was always super willing to help me out. If you plan on continuing in ENGL, I'd recommend him. He didn't use blackboard so be prepared if that's a necessary learning tool for you.
I like Dr Reddall's teaching style. I love his vocabulary (He could probably talk the birds down from the sky,) and the way he always asks us thousands of questions, to get us think. He never dumbs things down, and I am glad. I wish my classmates would answer his questions more often though-resounding silence hurts the ears after a while.
He never hands things back on time. He's a tough grader and he tries to sound like the smartest person ever. He is very pretentious.
David Reddall is an... unusual professor. Definitely not the typical prof. He's a tough marker, that's for sure. He also expects you to speak up in class, as he gives a percentage towards class participation. Definitely don't take him in your first year. Be prepared to fully read the texts and listen to a walking World Literature dictionary.
If you don't like being singled out for either good or bad reasons, don't take his class. He's very funny but pompous sounding, however if you participate in class and read the assigned readings, you will do perfectly fine. He's easy to talk to outside of class as well and gives very helpful feedback and is also willing to help students improve.
I would not take his class again
David has an incredible vocabulary. He is tough to understand at first, but you get better at deciphering his sentences as you listen to him more. If you don't attend his class or take notes, you will do horribly in his class. If you do attend his class and take his notes, you will do admirably in his class.
If you truly find solace in the english language, take this professor by all means. However I would avoid his class and go for a regular professor if you are going to put in a half effort. I received passive aggressive scoldings for multiple classes simply for asking for clarification. First years avoid. Great lectures that make you think.
After reading reviews on his teaching style I was daunted. It is true that he does have an extensive vocabulary, but if you pay attention you will be able to understand. He doesn't mind if students record his lectures and is willing to help if you ask for it. He is surprisingly funny. Overall, I felt I learned and improved more by taking his class.
It looks as though Dr. Reddall has been somewhat misrepresented here. He does have an extensive vocabulary; there is no debating it. I also agree that perhaps a first year mandatory English course is beneath him. However, if you show up to the class and do the readings assigned, and pay attention you should receive an admirable grade.
At first, David was intimidating because he is really intelligent and I suck at English. He really cares about his students and if you show that you care by showing up to class he will mark you easy. Participation and doing the readings is a must. Always ask him for clarification if you need it, he'll be happy to answer.
David is one of the best English teachers I have ever had! He makes each class discussion very interesting and entertaining. Reading the essays for class is essential for success (he picks on you in front of everyone otherwise). He is a very fair grader, and more than willing to give students a second chance.
David is a great professor. His lectures are completely based upon the required readings; which are essays from the required text for the class, and a novel analysis at the end of the semester. I am so thankful that I decided to take his class. I will be taking many more in the future.
Great class. He hates it when the class isn't participating in discussion. Never skip class. Always do the readings and have some notes about your thoughts. I took this class while only taking one other class. So I had plenty of time to put a lot of work in, if you don't have that time switch to a different class, seriously.
He is just fabulous! I look forward to his class every week! Could listen to him talk all day.
You are expected to put in the work for your grade, but if you participate in class and do the work you'll do well. He encouraged asking questions in class and was willing to give students an opportunity to improve. I went to see him during his office hours several times and he was always happy to help. Read your syllabus for dates!
He's very intellectual so his lectures are interesting/enlightening. Doing the readings is very important because the assignments are based on them, plus participation is key. His personality may come off as strange, but he grows on you. He's very helpful, and tries to make sure that everyone knows what's expected. (Only used essay writing).
He is a very intelligent man with an enhanced vocabulary. It's very intimidating at first but you get used to it. Reading the readings he assigns is really important and 10% of your mark goes towards attendance and participation in discussions. He's willing to answer questions and stay a little later after class to talk with you.
Very glad I took Reddall's class. He tries to make you think for yourself and uses very colorful language.
Great class and great prof. His vocabulary may go over your head but if you're paying attention you'll find he's actually quite funny. do your readings and you'll do great!
If you're truly very interested in the english language, this is the professor for you. If you're taking this class purely for the credits or because it's a prerequisite, steer clear of this one. I, as well as many of my classmates, got many passive agressive comments from him for simply asking for clarification. If you're first year, not for you.
Pick a different prof if you're not a strong writer, this class will be challenging and he's a really tough marker. He can be pretty intimidating and his lecture style takes some acclimating. His handwriting is illegible. He's witty and sarcastic, but he's very polite and accommodating if you approach him for clarification or discussion.
Initially intimidating but great guy, excellent prof. Very intelligent (obvious in the language he uses) but you get used to it as you listen. Really likes participation & class discussion but if you read the materials & follow instruction you should do well. Not the class you want to skip (attendance mandatory) but lectures are very intriguing.
His teaching style is very engaging and relies on class discussion, however his writing can often be difficult to read. His vocab is something you get used to as time goes on. He is sarcastic, and on good days funny, however he can single people out in a way that causes embarrassment and is often obviously irritated by the students, which is awkard
intelligent and passionate about the subject, extensive vocabulary, cracks a joke here and there. participation in class discussions is encouraged, however it can be intimidating to speak up in class as he can be quite condescending. seemed like his patience for dealing with confusion wore thin near the end of the term.
Vocabulary extremely difficult to understand, sometimes it would be intimidating to the point where I was scared to participate in class discussions, which turned out to be a significant portion of my final grade. It is essential to read the required essays or novels before class or else you could become easily confused.
If you pay attention in class and do at least some of the assigned reading, you should be fine
Most inspiring teacher I have encountered. Interactive and rich lectures are to be expected, so I encourage any future students to keep up with the readings and assignments so that you get the most out of his classes. He is a wealth of knowledge that brings light into the darkest corners of confusion of an english course.
Reddall is a mixed bag for sure. He uses the Socratic method which includes mandatory input from the students. So get ready to answer questions about the readings and defend your opinions of it (make sure you are not Conservative or remotely Religious he will chastise you). He is very cold and speaks in a highfalutin way which is very intimidating.
Dr Reddall is a wonderful professor (and funny)! He can be intimidating in his vocabulary but the students just need to ask questions and participate if there is anything that is unclear, and he is available for office hours as well. This was one of my favorite classes by far.
A very good and smart teacher. Some of his singling out of students can sometimes leave them intimidated or otherwise "sad". If you at the very least go to class you will learn lots from this prof. His English class is the only one I have ever learnt anything in.
Incredibly passionate about his work! Participation in class discussions is mandatory, meaning that if you haven't contributed anything to conversation lately he may single you out. Overall if you do the readings and go to class, you are more than prepared to write the essays and assignments. First years, steer clear.
Don't participate just to try and get the mark, if you don't know the answer and attempt to answer his question he will call you out on it. Although his vocabulary can be intimidating he is always willing to explain.
David is interesting. When talking about essays or the practice of academic writing, he is borderline insufferable! However, we had some incredible discussions about other literature. I would say take at your own risk and maybe it'll be worth it.
He's a weird, funny genius.
Don't get me wrong , the man knows his stuff and knows what he is talking about.. but he is super intimidating and his wording can be super confusing and misleading.. not to mention super messy handwriting. Also if he thinks you're wrong he will gladly shut you down (usually leads to the whole class laughing right at you).
The other reviewers says he's intimidating or he's choice of words are difficult to understand, and frankly they've most likely haven't graduated from elementary school. He actually asks questions in class, because he actually cares. Yes, he talks like he's a character straight from an overly verbose novel, but hey, welcome to university; learn.
David is a very intelligent professor, you have the chance to learn a lot from about the English Lit. However, he can be intimidating and hard to gauge in class, I do not recommend anyone who is timid to take his class. Be prepared to read and understand the textbooks, be engaged in class, take notes and ask questions.
Personally I do not recommend him to anyone. He is extremely intelligent. Difficult to understand but you will eventually pick up his speak. very intimidating and made me feel discouraged to participate in class discussion also not very approachable. His comments can be borderline degrading.
Do not reccomend this professor. Knowledgeable. Heavy on reading ex) odyssey in a week. Language in class is hard to follow. Does provide new vocabulary. Engagement with students during class is at times degrading. Asks for participation, reaction is at times intense.
He challenged me and made me a better writer.
Dr. Reddall is a real gem. Though his intellect may scare some people, he is a university professor and takes his role as a propagator of knowledge, very seriously. If you're easily offended and can't handle actually putting in some effort with your studies, you probably shouldn't be taking his class. Hell, you probably shouldn't be attending Uni.
David is the Gordan Ramsey of Introduction to Literature. The man is brilliant... He knows his stuff, but he can come off a bit intense at times. If you actually want an engaging class, David is the man for you. If you are easily intimidated or have bad anxiety I do not reccomend.
He is definitely a smart guy and anyone who enjoys english should take him, but anyone who doesn't like it or is just taking it as a prerequisite shouldn't take it. At times he can be really intense and some of the stuff he says can be rude, but he knows what he's teaching.
I survived and I'm okay :) His way of explaining the readings makes them more appealing. I've always struggled with papers. He will make you a better learner. He can come on strong and I was intimidated, but I liked being a part of it. He means well and is passionate about student learning. He's actually kind underneath it all. And gives his time.
He's tough but funny and makes you think.
If you like reading you'll like his class.
He wants you to read and can tell if you don't. If you do, the papers are easy to write and the exams aren't scary. He made me laugh a lot in class.
He's a smart man with a huge vocabulary. I would suggest him if you really like to be challenged. Prepare to read an entire epic (The Odyssey) in a week. He follows the Socratic method of teaching so if you like that, take this class. I personally would not take his class again, but he was the only prof who really pushed me to be a critical thinker
Dr. Reddall is helpful and encouraging, one of my favourite classes so far. He is funny, intelligent and, passionate about literature. Come to class having read the material. Be sure to participate in the discussions. Take his courses; what you learn will be worth the effort. His enthusiasm for literature is infectious.
If you have to take a non-STEM course and force yourself to read something to do with liberal culture it might as well be with a cultivated racounteur like Reddall. Knowledgeable, refined.
Dr. Reddall is a smart professor and does encourage student to think critically, which I value, but he can often be very insulting. He should not be teaching 100 level courses. He frames his intentions as teaching via the socratic method but I often found it disheartening and left many of my peers feeling like it was better to not show up at all
He seemed weird at first but grew on me.
He expected us to answer his questions and if you got them wrong he would torment you by making you feel beneath him. He is very knowledgeable and smart and if you like a challenge then this is a class for you, otherwise, he shouldn't be teaching an introductory class!
Don't take him
Dr. Reddall is one of the best teachers I've ever had! He teaches using the Socratic method, so he will ask questions and challenge you. As long as you complete the reading assignments and participate in class, you will do well. I found him to be very passionate, and he was always more than willing to help me with assignments (or just to chat).
This prof teaches via socratic method, and wants his students to participate in the class discussions. When you do participate though often times his response to his students does sound insulting, and when he gives you feedback on your assignments it is usually demotivating. He is also a tough grader, his way of teaching was not for me.
It's important to do readings, attend class, and participate, but it isn't difficult. I'm a shy person but I tried to say at least one thing every class and he appreciated the effort. A fair amount of readings and the discussion during lecture will be on exams. Creates clear essay guidelines. He's very helpful if you visit during office hours.
This guy may be intimidating at first, but if you find yourself getting mad in his class I seriously suggest you reconsider your methods. You can learn a lot from Dr. REDALLL. He certainly seems to have read it all. Respect him and he will respect you. He loves long sentences and big words, (artful speaker) so eat before class, you'll need it.
god forbid you glance @ the clock for .2 of a second, never have your phone on you even durring emergency. literally so terrifying
He is an extremely tough prof. He is very lecture heavy. There are multiple long readings that he expects everyone to read and talk about in class. If you have any anxiety in public speaking, i'd avoid his class.
Avoid this professor at all costs
HUMN 101 not Comp 100: he's a very smart man and uses a large vocabulary but he does explain things and writes on the board. He doesn't post to BB. He's fairly rude to people, I didn't enjoy his class at all. I won't be taking another class with him again if I can help it.
David can be intimidating and often a bit rude. Very intelligent, blunt, uses big words. Entertaining in a dry, sarcastic way. Expects you to keep up with the readings and participate - if you do, he won't have a problem with you! Learned tons and really enjoyed the class. Made me a better writer. Avoid if you're shy, but if not - take his class!
Guy gets a bad rep b/c he's blunt/sarcastic and easily frustrated with people who don't do the readings or speak in class (he asks a LOT of questions - just answer once in a while for participation marks). Be prepared for class and you'll do fine. Dude's funny and expanded my vocabulary. Good if you want a not boring English course.
Very tough marker. He does not respect any answers given by students. Very messy lectures, not easy to follow. Uses Socratic method to teach. If you don't like to participate in class, he will force you to participate. Not recommended to introvert students.
I did not mind going to this class. If you are a student who does not like being challenged DO NOT take his class, however if you enjoy participating in discussions and having your thoughts challenged this is the proff for you. bottom line if I had to take him as a proff again I would, but I would also like to explore better options as well.
I have mixed feelings about him, I have taken COMP 102 & 103 with him. He is very intelligent, dry, sarcastic and quite funny. However, he is also very rude, passive aggressive and disrespectful to students. He moved the midterm a day ahead without notifying or emailing anyone!! Found myself trying hard for a bad mark, would steer clear.
Experience his majestic lectures and you would be a fortunate pupil. Enhance your ability explain your thoughts with care and attention, these skills will help you in classes to come. So think about your future. He wants the best for you. It's just too bad he -doesn't- use a taser, if he did, he'd do it with the utmost care. Do the readings.
I had a hard time deciding whether I liked David Redall or not. He's very sarcastic in a dry way which could come off as rude but he is an intellectual man who knows what he is talking about and if you are a student who participates and does the readings you're good to go.
He has a very interesting lecture. Be sure that you read the assigned text. If you are actually listening to what is discussed in class you will do fine.
Reddall speaks in a unique way, almost old English, because of that it's hard to understand what he is saying. That alone will give you a hard time. He's also very sarcastic and almost makes people feel scared to ask questions and answer them, yet participation counts for part of your grade. If English isn't your strong suite, don't take his class.
Felt like I was in a 300 level English class. He was extremely rude, blunt and condescending. If you're in your first year and you only need Eng 103 for a requirement avoid this prof at all costs.
Stay away from this prof if you can, very disrespectful to his students. Show up to class every time or you wont pass, then he'll call you out every class after that in front of everyone. Will never have him as my prof again. Terrible.
Possibly the best english professor I've had at MacEwan. Very philosophical. Some students have a hard time getting used to his bluntness and very strange yet articulate style of speaking, but if you do the readings then you don't have to fear him one bit. Since he uses question & answer for his lectures, always make sure you have read the material
He sounds very rude at times. He is a really tough marker I do not recommend taking him.
THE HARDEST prof I've had so far. If you do not participate you will not get a good grade. period. Although he is a very caring person, His methods of teaching become rather extreme and easily discourage the average student who is taking English 103 merely for the credits. Avoid this prof if you do have a passion for literature. Can't stress enough
Although Dr Reddall has the reputation of being rude or mean to students, if you are respectful to him, this will not be an issue. He is lecture heavy, but will go over the more important notes in multiple classes. Do the readings ahead of time, and make sure to specify questions on the assignments.
This prof is very rude and condescending to his students. He is not understanding what so ever. He teaches via socratic method so if you skip his class good luck. Do not take him if you are taking an intro course because its not worth it. If you have no other option try your best and i wish you the best luck.
Very intellectual guy but very sarcastic and condescending towards students. uses the socratic method to teach so you need to participate, he will also call you out if you dont. definitely do not recommend for an intro class unless you are very confident in english and enjoy class discussion
David is quite likely the hardest grader I've had in a 100 level class. He's not for everyone. He's incredibly passionate about the material. He's clearly poured a lot of research into literary history and study. If you're carefully reading and showing up he's quite patient. His class gave me the rare jolt of discovery one yearns for when learning.
His handwriting is barely legible, he speaks in a very odd fashion, he probably marks the hardest out of all the ENGL 103 professors. Definitely would not take another course taught by him. Do not take for an easy pass, you would definitely need to have a passion for English to be able to succeed with Reddall. He responds fast though.
He's the most unprofessional professor I've ever had in my life and I urge with the utmost importance that no one should ever be in his classroom. Ever.
He's one of the most well-spoken individuals, and you will certainly learn things, however he's not exactly the most fair marker, and is somewhat condescending and rude to his students. Personally, I wouldn't take him again. Take someone else please. He's very unprofessional in the way he teaches using the socratic method.
Honestly, I was slightly terrified going into this course with him after reading all of the feedback about him. However, all he wants from you is to make an active effort- stay off your phone, and contribute to discussions. He's clearly incredibly intelligent and will teach you a lot if you put in the effort.
Mr. Reddall is one tough marker, especially for a 100 level course. He seems to have based my grades for the entire semester off of the first piece of literature he saw from me, knowing I was improving but never receiving the grade to show for it. He expects students straight out of high school to be at a professional level, which seems unrealistic
I think most of these comments are coming from students who thought that 100 level courses should be a coast through. Reddall is an amazing teacher, he is intelligent, and has interesting material he uses to supplement lectures. I learned a lot from him. Show up, engage, do the work - Be respectful and youll be just fine. He will call out your bs.
I took HUMN 101 thinking it would be an interesting class however he does not have lectures and you'd basically read stories and write a short essay about them. David is nice however is a tough marker. No matter how hard I tried, I would never get above a 60. His criticism is condensing and hard to understand. Be prepared to read and write a lot.
I took this course and had no idea what I was doing! there is no lecture recordings, not enough material to help students understand what is being "taught" , things are not marked on time! awful awful awful! at the end of the course I couldn't care if I passed or failed ! I felt stupid..
David is passionate and erudite, extremely knowledgeable about literature and the academic writing process. His respect is earned through form and effort. He does not care about how good you think your writing is, he cares about how good your writing actually is. If you want to actually improve your writing, at any level, David is your man.
Do not trust the good reviews, I did and now I am literally barely passing this course. He is by the worst prof you can get for a beginner course. If you have him just drop the class, take another prof or just don't take the class whatever you do DO NOT take this prof. Didn't teach at all online everything was asynchronous and I taught myself ALL
I was expecting Dr. Reddall to be a super hard marker but he was pretty lenient. He sent out links for office hours every day which was nice, and he provided secondary sources for the final paper when you emailed him which helpful. I found this class to be quite boring personally, but it was fairly easy, with few assignments.
Lots of reading that is sometimes tedious & boring. I ended up immersing myself in the readings as it is basically teaching yourself and trying to pull out ideas from the readings to write on (short reading responses) I wish David provided a little more direction (there are no lectures) and discussion on the readings. He is a fair marker though.
Great professor if you can look past his intimidating presence when he is asking questions. I'm the typical science student that is taking the course because I have to. He is actually hilarious but his humor can go beyond what we are used to so it can come off as him just being dry or cynical. Try your best to be engaged and you will do great!
Grades were based on just 3 papers throughout the sem + a final. He did not have any papers graded until the last week of class LMAO?? No online or recorded lectures at all, just modules to read off of. Holds office hours regularly.
There are better professors within the English department surely. I respect Reddall and his vernacular, however, I do wish he was a more optimistic individual. A positive upbeat personality would surely suffice much better than the other comments on his course. The Socratic Method is a bit excessive for an Intro level course.
I have taken three classes under Dr. Reddall's tutelage and will take more if given the opportunity. In a year of online schooling amidst a global pandemic, He proved to me that he cares about his students and goes out of his way to assist them, should they seek his help. I haven't had another professor that puts in the effort that he does.
His lectures really inspired me and made the classroom experience worth coming to class. It was the only class in my five-class day that wasn't boring.
I struggled in Comp Lit and with online schooling in general. However, I found Dr. Reddall to be one of those professors that went above and beyond in providing me with any additional help I needed and was always quick to respond to emails.
It is now April 25 and I still haven't received 2/3 of my papers :) This guy frustrates me to the core. There are no lectures, just 3 essays and a final. He would get irritated when people asked for their marks and was passive-aggressive when addressing that issue. Modules were helpful but no feedback received. Not recommended.
Dr. Reddall is a great professor, despite all of the subjective negative reviews. If you show that you care about the class & its content then you will succeed. Office hours are especially helpful, even if you just discuss a topic. He is quite amusing yet interesting when he gives examples to further your understanding of the content.
Dr. Reddall was rude, condescending, and provided no helpful feedback. Zero useful tips just pointed out everything that was wrong in an essay. No lecture material besides a breakdown of the story, he constantly commented on essays needing to contain a humanistic portion but never said what that portion equated to. SERIOUSLY, SO RUDE.
if you have anxiety or don't just don't prefer speaking up in class, don't take him. cool guy and all but he gets frustrated if class does not participate because of the implication the socratic method of teaching. felt a very large gap of superiority between educator and student. also seems like the type to get into arguments on reddit.
Reddall provided absolutely no helpful feedback that you could use in order to make your next essays better. He is also a bit passive-aggressive especially when you do question his marking. And he is the kind of guy who will purposefully use big words to intimidate you or show his authority. He isn't the worst professor ever but wouldn't recommend.
The first two classes, I'll admit, I was intimidated. He has a very blunt way of saying things, but in all reality, just wants to try and make his students think and engage in the material. He has a true passion for what he does and has no qualms about going over what has already been taught to further reinforce it. I recommend him to everyone!
Horrible and incredibly rude professor. He does not care for students at all and gets annoyed when students ask questions. I did everything I could and met with him regularly during office hours in order to succeed in his class, but I found it a major waste of time. He has zero passion to teach, feels like he is forced to do it. AVOID HIM!
I shall not tell a lie D-Red is a guy Who walks up and down the isle Outputs a thousand words a mile Relates all of his content to ontology His board requires cryptology Just keep in mind He can be kind And on occasion funny. I think you'll find He'll lose his mind If you say class is for money
My favorite class, he is very funny and is passionate about teaching, and also really wholesome. A lot of people said he was rude, but I have only ever seen him be kind to students. He is also extremely helpful outside of class if you need help
Professor Reddall is a very intelligent man, and he knows his material very well. His lectures are very informative, and he just expects students to participate and do what is asked, to succeed in the course. He is very kind and helpful outside of class and will email back in a very reasonable time period. He is also very funny!!
Insanely hard marker for a 100 level course.
He is a really nice prof once you get to know him. Just make sure to study and actually do your work and you will do fine.
Really fun and nice, seems like only the students who don't like doing their work give him poor reviews. I hate reading but he makes it so interesting and he is very accommodating and helpful for assignments! One of my favorite classes!
David is a very funny and well-spoken prof. I enjoy his content which he makes very engaging and makes you think. However, if you are a shy person or learn best by the information being presented right to you, I would avoid his class. Be ready to read a lot and be marked quite difficultly. Lastly, ATTEND THE CLASSES!
this is a great class to take with him, just pay attention and you'll be fine! he is also very helpful and understanding
If you're enrolled in any of his ENGL classes drop it immediately! Although David is a great person with an amusing personality, he expects too much for an ENGL 102 course. I would never recommend taking him as your ENGL prof, I'd rather dropout then take him as a teacher again.
His lectures are Socratic and very engaging. He is very enthusiastic and is usually willing to help if you are confused about an assignment.
lots of reading, lecture delivery is very intense. his method of trying to evoke discussion in class did not work for me. he is constantly picking apart what students attempt to contribute to the conversation, in a discouraging way. if you do not thrive in discussion-like lectures, do NOT take this class.
Fantastic Prof, was super nice and is willing to help tons after class. I have realized there is not a perfect prof so my advice is do your readings, ask questions and try to go to office hours if lost, submit your stuff on time and you will do well.
David definitely does not give a great first impression, but if you attend class having read the readings and participate in a couple of discussions, you'll be fine. I will say that the readings can be super long, but that's a given as it is a literature class. He is sassy, so prepare for that, but he is a great prof nevertheless.
Socratic method of teaching. Very knowledgeable of what texts are given to read in the course. Took a spring class with him and there was a lot of reading as expected but he was often passive aggressive during lecture. I would avoid his classes if you do not like discussion based lectures, for his were quite discouraging.
Some people like his style of teaching but if you don't like to speak in class or get anxious then his class is not for you. I found him quite rude to students, he has a very pretentious way of communicating. However he is very knowledgeable and attending lectures will help your grade immensely.
I took Dave's class in 2022 fall and his class was my favourite so far, he talks, he will make you think. In my opinion, the negative reviews are from people who arent at school to learn, they just want grades. If you want to learn and you can talk in class like a normal person you will have a fun time in his class. Not for quiet people.
The professor's approach, particularly the Socratic method, wasn't to my liking. The readings were extremely boring. I wouldn't recommend this class; it requires patience and a specific learning style to adapt. Be prepared for a rigorous academic experience if you choose to take it. Also found the prof to be quite rude to students.
I found his teaching style to be incredibly difficult for no reason. He often rebuttals students analysis of the texts in a manner that is definitely rude. he ridicules students for doing poorly. His class is truly either hit or miss. His lectures are wordy, hard to follow and handwriting illegible.
His teaching style is definitely not for everyone. Insanely tough grader and class participation and attendance will matter the most and will determine class success.
Dr. Reddall is very strict and unjust in his teaching style. He utilizes the Socratic method, and uses high vocabulary to continuously question the students who participate. He also grades very strictly and will penalize if you don't know how to write well. Very difficult class for ENGL 103 which is an INTRO class. Would avoid at all costs!!!!!
David was not very nice to the students in his class. I missed the first two days of his class due to a family emergency and he made sure to publicly shame anyone who had missed those days. Obviously uses the Socratic method. Heavy on reading; lectures were long and endless; and his handwriting is illegible. All relevant texts are posted for free.
Please do the readings and listen to the lectures since he goes over the important parts and breaks down everything. This is done through Socratic method but he also is not rude to you if you are afraid to talk
David is a fascinating teacher who uses the Socratic method of teaching. This comes from somebody whose first language isn't English, and I could understand most of his lectures. You have to be prepared to go to class after reading the readings for that day, but if you follow along, engage, and ask questions, you'll do fine. Also no final.
Professor David's class is no walk in the park - it requires consistent engagement and a willingness to participate. The reading load is heavy, but if you stay on top of it and attend lectures, you'll do well. Try using resources like unstuck study and ChatGPT to supplement your study prep.
Just a month into the course, absolutely regret taking this course with this teacher. Probably the worst prof I have had! I attend all the lectures and do all of the readings, and his lectures can be hard to understand, not sure if I am going to even end up with an actual C, do not take his class.
His lectures are so annoying, they don't do anything for you apart from a yap session on the essay paper you were meant to read. If you don't agree with his opinion, your answer is automatically deemed wrong. He doesn't take standing up for your opinion well. The reading is so heavy, just for him to ask 2-3 questions on them. Save yourself, please.
It can be difficult to understand him at first because he doesn't speak in "everyday language." He has bad writing, which he acknowledges, but makes no effort whatsoever to solve that problem. A poor girl asked him what he wrote on the board, and he said, "That's sad." She turned so red and I never saw her again. Just not an understanding prof.
Very hard to understand, didn't explain anything and made simple concepts confusing. He is a very tough grader for essays and often times rude. Would not recommend him.
As long as you do the readings and participate in class, you should do fine. he does the socratic method meaning he expects you to do the reading so that we can discuss it in class. He does have writing that's hard to read, but just ask him. He gets annoyed if you ask your neighbour what he wrote.
Professor David R is disorganized and unhelpful. Lectures are rushed and unclear, making it hard to understand complex material. He rarely engages with students and offers no real feedback on assignments. Emails are often ignored, and grading is inconsistent. A frustrating and stressful experience overall.
Although he wasn't a horrible lecturer, I found him to be mentally and physically exhausting. He is extremely passive aggressive and sarcastic to the point where majority of the class stopped showing up. I used to participate, but seeing how rude he could get I stopped. If you have anxiety this class probably isn't for you.
I felt attacked whenever I went to his class, although he has lots of knowledge which is interesting because he can provide an in depth analysis of the various texts we read, but being extremely rude ruins the entire lecture. Although the lectures are interesting, I just wish he was less pessimistic. Would not recommend his class.
Courage is like a muscle, you only strengthen it by using it. You will need a bit of courage for this class but it will change your whole look on life if you'll let it. Don't be afraid of him - he's a bit scary but he only wants you to think. He will challenge your ideas and they need challenging. Be brave, you'll love this professor and this class
If you're looking for the path of least resistance, pick a different prof. If you want to rise to the occasion, learn about world literature, and grow as a person, take this class. If you keep up with the readings, attend lectures, and at least occasionally contribute to class discussions, you will have a great time.
If you aren't a fan of the socratic method this class may not be for you, but he managed to change my mind on it. He is very engaging with the course material although occassionally comes across as dismissive. Overall I believe this course strengthed my writing ability, he provides thorough feedback in an impressivly timly manner.
Do NOTTTTT take David reddall. I answered all questions in class did the assigned readings nothing correlated to the essays that we do for marks. Good luck
David is such an inspirational professor who is truly passionate about what he does. The class is so easy, he made me love with writing, i asked him for help so he taught me how to write essays, helping me through the rest of my university. He gets a bad rap from teenagers freshly out of high school who have been babied for their entire education.
Extremely hard marker. Comments on your assignments would insult you instead of providing helpful feedback. Half the time you would feel foolish based off his passive aggressive and rude comments. He uses a different vocabulary than other teachers so its really hard to comprehend what he is talking about. Would suggest choosing any other professor
Calls you out in front of class for no reason, embarrassing you. Half the class does not understand what he is talking about besides the same 4 people. Do not recommend this professor
He's an okay professor. Just not the one you want marking your essays.
he talks in this weird english to make himself sound smarter, he grades hard and teaches using the socratic method, no one bothered to show up after the first week because everything is to be done at home and his lectures are boring because he relates all the articles to the same 5 points and speaks in a way where only 5 people understand.
He is chronically addicted to making students read articles about the use of AI and how it's not ethical but even though everyone knows almost every student uses it. If you try asking or answering a question you will be hit back with continuous questions that will make you regret answering the question at all. His writing is messy and unreadable.
Condescending when you don't give him the answer he thinks is right even though it's an opinion question. Very tough grader. Only plus is that if you show up to class and take notes, you'll do fine. Wouldn't recommend taking him at all.
My class was very quiet and he wants lots of engagement in discussions. Whole course is reading texts and discussing them in class. 3 essays in his class all based off the readings. 9 of the 30 in my class regularly showed up. Feel kind of bad for him but at the same time he tries to sound smarter than you and what he asks isn't always clear.
The work in the class was pretty manageable, but his lectures were exhausting. He asks so many complicated questions, begs people to answer them and then interrupts you halfway through your answer. Did not make me a better writer, just made me stress for no reason. Do not recommend, especially for 1st year students.
Bottom 3 professors at macewan and hes not 2 or 3 btw. Will insult your work if you slightly misinterpret the readings or what he is looking for. 3 essays are basically worth 80% of the course and if dont do well on one of them say Ggs. Would rather drag my balls through broken glass and give birth at the same time than take his course again.
I am 100% confident if Shakespeare was disguised as a student in his class and submitted an essay he would not give him anything over a C
If you intend on skipping, don't expect to pass. If you attend the lectures, you might as well bring a dictionary because he uses language that only a few people in the room understand. Course material was primarily on A.I. which was cool at first but got plain and repetitive. His teaching style relied heavily on dialogue which I really disliked.
If you like being berated, take this class. Very passive aggressive, if you answer questions wrong, he makes you feel stupid. My mental health suffered so much bc of this class. Halfway through the semester, people stopped showing up bc of his behaviour. If you do end up taking this unfortunate class, attending the lectures will help ig on the quiz
Pros: He knows a lot about the subject Cons: -Cannot understand him -Will insult you to your face if you give him an answer he's not looking for(this includes essays) -Tries to make himself sound smarter than he is by speaking in a dialect popular 500 years ago. -Cannot read his writing and will insult you if you ask to clarify 10/10 BAD
Oh boy, oh boy... Where do I start? If you have his class, make sure to invest in a dictionary and a magnifying glass. Hieroglyphics are easier to decipher than his writing. He talks in a way that uses a variety of esoteric diction. He thinks we're all manifestations of Shakespeare—in fact, Shakespeare himself couldn't get more than a B if he tried
Worst prof ever. He talks like a robot and makes classes so boring. Genuinely the toughest grader ever.
I drove to school without a seatbelt on the way to his class because I would rather be in a car crash and not survive than actually go to his class. The 5-star reviews this guy gets gotta be himself on burners because no way a real human would give him anything higher than a 2
