He has a textbook listed as optional reading and posts various historical documents on his web site for reading instead. Makes the essay question on his test 60 percent of the test grade and 12 percent of your overall grade for the class. He did not give any hints to the essay topic or question beforehand. His lectures are completely confusing.
dynamic lecturer, intense and passionate. kinda crazy, but in a good way. really knows his history.
style of teaching is not the best but he does let you send raft draft of your essays via email, comments on them so you can make corrections. quizzes/test incl map ID's
very challenging. a unique experience.
INTELLIGENT! He provides interesting books for reading assignments. Answer all discussion questions to help prepare yourself for class and make sure you PARTICIPATE! He is very liberal which makes class easy to sit through. Very willing to communicate and help. Study groups for tests are extremely helpful.
A very passionate professor who deeply loves history. He lectures every class and demands class participation. Read the chapter and go to class with A game on. He will say colorful, embarassing things put doesnt put anyone down. He comes off as a tough guy, but will go the extra mile for a student who is trying. a Professor worth taking.
Prof. Reeves is an amazing, enthusiastic professor. He loves what he teaches, and makes the class a blast. I will definitely take more of his history courses. He is the Denis Leary of history professors!
Quite a reasonable guy. Swears a bit, and is one of those leftist super liberal teachers. Class is pretty easy, I never studied too hard for the tests, just paid attention in class. A bit tough on grading papers, but nothing too bad. You can score an A if you pay attention and read the book. Not a super easy A, but easy enough. I'd take him again.
Could not stand his method of teaching. He may know what he is talking about, but he's awful. He isn't professional at all and puts students down on their work/in class. I'm surprised he hasn't been kicked out by the Dean. Totally disrespectful and unethical. Waste of my tuition money. Would never recommend taking him.
Personally enjoyed his class very much. A bit of a spazz when it comes to his lectures. Stops mid-sentence to try to reword his ideas. Is very particular about essay format/grammar. Don't take his class if you're offended by swearing, crude humor, or liberal leftist agenda. Write/type down everything he says during lecture.
GREAT teacher and communicator! I enjoyed the class so much Fall 2011 that I am taking another class Spring 2012. He keeps the class VERY interesting and informative, keeps you on your toes! Best history professor!!
His style of teaching is interesting; it takes getting used to. We read 4 books; 3 for short bk rpts; 1 just bcuz he loves Azerbaijan. He lectures the entire class (no txtbook) so you need to be present to take notes for exams. Many students return to him course after course so that says something. Sadly I didn't get the hang of his style soon enuf
Really funny, and knows his stuff. Down to earth.
Very unprofessional! Rude and vulgar. A teacher is supposed to encourage and appreciate his/her students, he doesn't!!
Don't take him.
Terrible educator. Knows his stuff, yes (to be fair). However, puts students down.
Professor Reeves is very passionate when it comes to history. He is not afraid to speak the truth so you will hear him swear every so often. Class participation is a must if you want to succeed in his class. Don't plan on taking this course you plan on being lazy. Some of the material being counted towards your grade are easy points.
His teaching method is very entertaining at times offensive but funny as we'll. he is very smart in the subject he teaches.very informative, his lecture is all him speaking so it's vital to go to his class
This instructor is by far very rude, ignorant, demeans students, and does not care about his students. He talks to students with little respect for them. I do not recommend this teacher at all. He believes he is far above his students. Worst teacher I have EVER encountered in all my years being in school (from elementary-college)! F!
Amazing educate. Very straight forward. If you are not a joking kind of person then don't sign up. Very proffesional
This professor is rude, demeaning and does not encourage students to do well in class or even offer assistance. Other students say he has a sense of humor, which I totally disagree. This professor lacks the empathy to teach students and is not willing to help. Attendance and participation is strict. Expect not to have a life.
I'm taking his online History 109 class and all I can say is RUDE! He's completely unhelpful and when you do ask for clarity he puts you down like you're completely dumb. His online discussion requirements are insane and it's a crazy amount of work. He's clearly passionate about history but I'd rather fail his class than have to deal with him!
Prof. Reeves is extremely rude. There are two papers for his class, which he grades to an extremely high standard. He writes comments on the margins of papers that are not helpful and just plain mean. He responds to questions in a way to make you feel dumb. There are weekly discussion posts that are manageable. A midterm and a final that are tough.
The absolute worst teacher I've ever had. He is very vague on what he wants you to do and if you ask him a question he just makes you feel dumb. He grades his papers harder than an English teacher. I love American history but, he ruined it for me. STAY AWAY!!!
I deeply regret taking History 109 with professor Davis Reeves. He is extremely hard on exams, paper assignments, and homework. Don't even think about getting an A in his class unless you are in History major and all you do during the semester is studying History and nothing else. Until now I still have a nightmare about his class in my sleep.
Homework are 5 posts every week. each post is 200 words or half of a page. so it is like writing an essay every week. If you try hard you will get a B. To get an A, you need to be a good English writer too. I regret this class is a lot like English class, a lot of writing. This class with professor Reeves makes me feel like a 4 units class, not 3
do not make the same mistake I made. I took this class without reading rate my professors first. I tried very hard to complete homework assignment (5 long posts every week) and stayed up all night to complete paper assignments. I still end up with a B. Professor Reeves is extremely tough grader and his test are very tough. so good luck!
crazy amount of homework, like writing essay every week. paper assignments and exams are very tough to get high grade. his grade standard is very high. I am not going to take any class with him again. don't make the same mistake I made. But if you do take his class History 109 or 110, good luck! God bless you.
so sad! tried so hard still end up with a C. class participation is 5 long posts every week, like writing essay every week. paper assignment is so tough too, if you are not good with English and your paper doesn't sound smooth like music, you will not get an A. I didn't know his class is supposed to be that hard. good luck if you take his class.
Big mistake to take his class online. I lost a lot of time and sleep for class discussion posts and paper assignments and still end up with a C. His class might be for those who major in History to earn an A. His grading standard is very tough. he expects you to be very good with History to get an A or B. so be aware and prepared to loose sleep
I took online class. insane amount of class discussion..5 posts each week with each answer required half a page. paper assignment is hard and grading standard is extremely high. his class will take a lot of your time and energy and you don't have enough time for other classes. if you still want to take his class, good luck and God be with you.
Be prepared to face a lot of homework and paper assignments, tons of them that you don't have time for other classes. if you miss class participates, you might get a C. if you work hard on homework and paper assignments, you are looking at a B. To get an A in Professor David Reeves class, you need to really into History, like History is your major.
crazy amount of work. very high grading standard. History class becomes insanely hard with this professor. you will need to spend a lot of time for this class. that's his minimum requirement. To get a good grade like A or B, you will definitely have to work extra hard, go extra mile. it's not a piece of cake with this professor.
homework, paper assignment, and test are extremely tough. believe me I regret I took his class. Professor David Reeves is very hard on students. his class is harder than it supposes to be. if you don't believe it, take his class and you will understand what I said.
The worse teacher I ever had. The way he assigned class works, assignments, and tests, It made me study History as my major more than a GE course. everything is extremely tough to keep up. I don't want to get a low or average grade, so I had to stay up late at night and lost a lot of sleep thanks to the hard work of Professor David Reeves.
Professor Reeves will make you study really hard and really learn history in his class. If you intend to take it to satisfy general elective course requirement, you should not take his class because it will destroy your grade. If you get a B on midterm, you will end up with a B. He doesn't give many extra credit. so good luck!
I took his class was a big mistake. His class is so tough. He has very high standard and very high expectation for students. until now I still have a nightmare dream answering history question in his class. 2 big and difficult paper assignments and not many extra credit to make up for the lost points. hope you don't make the same mistake I did.
Tests, discussions, and paper assignments are very tough. DO NOT take his class period! I was very interested in History. After taking professor Davis Reeves class, my interest was destroyed. He grades your work based on his extremely high standard. He will not take into account you work very hard for it.
No chance to get an A in professor David Reeves's history 109 online class, unless all you study is history.
Feel terrified about professor Reeves History 109 online class. His expectation is way too high. long blackboard discussion, long papers assignment and exams. there is no hope to get an A unless all you do is study History and nothing else!
This class is impossible. He doesn't have a textbook for the class except for 3 novels that have nothing to do with the class. He talks a majority about European history when it's an AMERICAN history class. And when you ask a question or try to answer a question he makes you feel dumb. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS!!!
This is my first online class in college. I love the way professor Reeves teaches his lectures. He is hard when it comes to essays. You have to be really carful with your essay and check your work several times. He gives extra credits and its easy to and A if you do the work. No expensive text book needed.
Prof Reeves was flat out rude. His online class is a ton of reading. He grades very hard and does not care about his students. I usually like history and always have a 4.00 gpa. While taking his class I worked hard and earned a C. He made history a drag. If you are interested in learning or doing well in class do not take him. He is the WORST!
US Hist 2. Nobody said in the comments that I read before adding this class that he assigns 4 novels. No textbook. You get 1 week to read a novel & write an essay on it. If this sounds like your cup of tea, then add it! Any history class is going to require reading, but holy crap dude. Positive note, cheap books &some can be downloaded free-pdf.
Don't waste your time. Reeves goes off topic a lot during lectures and expects us to know questions on exams we never went over. Theres no textbooks or powerpoint to study. His rambling about his past makes you question what to take notes about. You're expected to read 3 novels and write essays for them which is ridiculous for a 16 week class.
Mr. Reeves is a riot and made the class more interesting to me. He is very knowledgeable in history and seems to not need the text book in order to teach. However, since he didn't require a text book, I find studying for the tests difficult, but they are passable. He grades essays very hard, but it not impossible to pass his class.
Had quite possibly the single most fun of any class i have taken in years, You have to pay attention as all information needed are talked about in class and he gives time well in advance to study for midterms and finals, He does get a bit off track from time to time but its always hilarious and i personally enjoyed it :) Favorite history teacher :)
He is not very clear with instructions and will still mark you down for it, so make sure you get them clear if you have him as a professor.
Ridiculous expectations. No textbook. Have to read 3 outside books. 4 Papers, 6 quizes, midterm, final. Tears apart your papers. His margin comments are longer than the papers. Tests include information never presented. Goes off topic. Tells stories about all his prior drug use. Very arrogant and pompous. Was an Honor student until I took his class
Honestly one of the worst classes I've had. The professor used filler words constantly when he wasn't reading from his script ("and so on, you get the idea, etc." in between his seemingly angry declarations of "okay!"). He even stated that the Rosetta Stone had ancient Greek and "Aramaic or something." Act like you know the material.
Truly a God among mere mortals. If you are an irresponsible and entitled little twit who expects to be spoon-fed everything, take another teacher. Not like the other teachers.
There was no textbook, the lectures only helped when i did the assignments, not the papers or the midterm and final. The guy also likes making fun of his students, he sent me an email telling me i write like a 5 year old, when i only made about two grammar mistakes on my paper. He also decided to give extra credit after the last day of the semester
This guy is awesome. He keeps lecture interesting and always relates what he's covering to its ramifications on today's society. He also does a good job of presenting all sides of events, not distorting things to make somebody out to be a perfect hero or victim. He also can be a little vulgar, but history is vulgar. So deal with it.
I have always done well in history, until I took this class. Reeves comes off as arrogant, rude, and unhelpful. He is a harsh grader and will tear apart any paper you write. He seems to be big on grammar, which is ironic because nearly all of his comments are full of errors! This is by far the worst professor I have ever had.
took 8-week online class in World History II. Professor only assigned 2 books, but lectures made reference to a 3rd book which he uses for his 16-week class. He received one of my papers late because of a system problem and he marked me down a grade. I don't like history, but I did learn a lot from this class.
This online class is really tough, with many and long weekly discussions. Professor Reeves is tough grader too, which made the class quite challenge, not like a normal GE. I don't know if the in-class is any better, but online you have to do a lot of reading, posting discussions, and answering discussion. very long and time consuming. so watch out!
taking this class online, tough grading, not recommend for anyone, who want to write a lot, when i meant a lot, i meant A ALOTTTTT. No multiple choices test or quiz. TThis class is like an English 205 class.
I don't know about other students but I think this teacher is disrespectful, tough grader, and nothing matters to him. I feel like it doesn't matter to him if his students fail or not, unlike other professors. I don't recommend taking this class with this professor.
This professor is very rude and is not willing to help students with disabilities. I also feel that he should be an English teacher instead of history because he is so picky with grammar when he grades papers. BTW, his feedback is full of grammatical errors. His class is easy if you are a native English speaker with perfect English skills.
Do not take this professor unless you want to be trapped into listening to him obnoxiously yell at you via YouTube lectures. His entire introduction video for the class was him realizing he made mistakes in the syllabus and musing loudly to himself that we wouldnt do any of the work he assigned. Just dont. Terrible professor with an attitude.
He is one of the rudest professor i have ever taken. I thought taking him was a good idea since a lot of my friends recommended him. I definitely will not be taking him again. Professor Reeves is not the one to ask for help if you need it, because he criticizes you more then anything. He is really big on grammar and is very strict on that too
The best word to define him is RUDE! Do not expect him to help you, he will simply give you an attitude and say that he is a busy man. I do not recommend this professor, he is rude for no reason. Definitely does not have a passion for teaching. How would I ever like a class where the professor is Rude? RUDE RUDE RUDE
He unprofessionally raises his voice in his videos about students making grammar errors while he's correcting his own grammar mistakes on HIS syllabus in HIS video. Nobody likes the "Do as I say, not as I do" attitude, it's unprofessional.
Reeves seriously is such a tough grader. 6 discussion posts a week that were not difficult & easy points. I don't even think he reads them. Two exams with part multiple choice plus & essay & two papers. He's a grammar nazi. For some of the notes on my paper he just said no. How does that help me? Doesn't teach at all just makes you read the book.
I took his HIST100 Online class summer 2018. I Received an A; the class itself was easy and straightforward. Six Discussion posts a week based on the reading, two papers, a two tests. However as a person, he was rude! Unhelpful criticism on essays, I received a B- for mostly grammatical errors. This HIST100, Not English. Would never take again
This guy has the same personality as Trevor from GTA V. Hahahahaha.
Wow. Okay. Very happy it wasn't just me. He had me questioning my ability to form sentences in my mind and translate them to paper. His grading of the two essays I've submitted were terrible! His commentary while grading your papers is literally mean. And yes, he does yell into his videos on YouTube! How is yelling grammatically correct?
I really wish I would have looked on here before taking his History 100 class. He is the hardest grader I have ever had, which would be good if he gave good feedback but he does not. Every assignment that I have turned in and spent a lot of time and thought into he has given me an F & says it is late when I turn them all in on time. Rude professor.
David Reeves is probably the worst instructor I have ever had, he actually told me my world map was a pain for him to look at, he is rude and unprofessional I would not recommend this man to teach a dog a trick. He brings you down with his insulting comments. In order to maintain my self-respect, I had to drop the class, David, you're a Tripp!!
Discussion posts and assignments are easy A's, he doesn't read it. Midterm, papers, and final are graded tougher. Gives unhelpful and negative feedback on them, very hard to please even when following directions exactly. If you just want the credit, take the class it'll be worth it, just don't take his feedback personally.
The assignments were easy A. Papers and tests, he grades really tough and writes only negative and bad comments like "no". "no" what??? They made me cry.
Professor Reeves's lectures are hard to follow, he jumps around quite a lot. He incorporates group projects through google drive, which can be extremely confusing. His grading is really harsh, would not recommend.
I'm not sure why people rate him so poorly. This is my first time taking college courses in years, and I haven't had any issues with him, or his grading. His lectures can be hard to hear sometimes, but I think he bought a new computer, so that should hopefully help. Overall, as long as you do the discussions, and take notes, you should do well. IMO
Hes not a good professor. I took summer classes at UC San Diego and my God those professors graded pretty moderately which is understandable for the since its a UC but David Reeves is just so picky about everything that it isnt even fair. I put so much work into my essays only to get below a C. Do not take this Professor!!!!!!
Do not take David Reeves unless you absolutely have no other choice. Although it's a hist class which means a good amount of reading, this professor takes it too far with overly critical grading and assignments. Reeves himself comes off as v naive and even pessimistic in his syllabus video. He caries this energy into his course work. Stop teaching
I don't understand why so many people are so critical of Professor Reeves. I thought he was great. I learn so much from him. History was never one of my strong subjects. Yes he is a tough grader but if you get an A in his class it's truly rewarding because than you earned it. I've never anything below a B in his class. I would recommend him.
Will tell you that your assignment doesn't meet criteria when it does. Rude, lazy, and generally uncaring. Just assigns reading, no lectures or explanations. Drop the class and choose another professor while you have a chance.
The discussions are easy and straightforward enough. Just hit the word requirement and you'll get your points. The tests aren't bad either. As long as you've read you should be fine. Horrible grader when it comes to the essays though. I don't know how you can get an A on an essay since he just writes "No" as comments and just unhelpful criticism.
I have over 80 credit hours in both online and in person classes. I've had good professors and bad professors, who shined in some areas and failed in others. Never have I had a professor who I can honestly say has no business being in academia, until Dr. Reeves.
Prof. Reeves lays out what he wants explicitly. If you deviate from that even slightly, you will lose marks. He is an extremely tough marker on major assignments such as essays. This may be a 100 class but he treats it otherwise. If you are taking this class, as I was, to meet GE requirements, there are easier routes for you.
I had Professor Reeves for the shorter 8 week version of HIS109 and I was pleasantly surprised. His lectures are plenty and typically 30-45 minutes each. If you take good notes though and follow the directions it should be a pretty easy A. He has study guides for his midterms and finals and they were open notes. Can be vague on instructions though.
knows his stuff but talks really fast. If u can type out & format ur notes so they are neat. Tests are standard multiple choice/essay question format. Ask a lot of questions when papers are assigned. He's not clear on what he wants, grades/critiques heavy on grammar and what he wants after the fact. Ask what wants beforehand he's a rude person
This class is intense. There are FOUR discussion posts he assigns each week, minimum of 200 words and it is based off of lengthy primary sources he assigns and the tedious lectures he posts. Very tough grader and lectures are just him talking with few words on slides, took me forever to take notes. If you want an easy class do not take his course.
I've never encountered a Professor that didn't give REAL feedback on assignments. Instead of writing constructive criticism on my assignments, he would cross out something and write "NO" in red pen throughout my paper. I would have appreciated some form of explanation as to why it was a "no". Very rude when I reached out for help/feedback.
Recorded a long lecture and READ the questions throughout. Respectfully PLEASE give some actual examples. Not everyone will answer these questions in the correct form. Some people have just entered college. Require them to write homework according to college standards, But they may not have much experience.
Professor Reeves gives awful feedback on any assignments except discussion posts which are just a "good post". On any other assignment he just gives you all negative feedback. He expects you to be an expert writer at as a first year college student. Lectures are scatter brained. Too much work for how difficult he grades. Don't take this class.
bro does NOT know how to teach or grade first off, the info that he provided was cool to learn about but his discussion posts were ridiculously long and unnecessary. Also, he gives the absolute worst criticism ive ever heard, sometimes just "no" "problematic" or straight up "?". dont take it if you like to learn tbh
4 discussions per week, each discussion requires 2 posts of 200 words. Reach the word count, get credit. You can't view both topics per discussion until you post the first one and sometimes your grade is added before you finish the second post, in which you will get half credit. Let's out anger on students written assignments. Rude comments.
Reeves is a smart guy no doubt, but he's a horrible lecturer and teacher. Doesn't give good feedback especially on papers like many have said just "no" "?" Etc. Things like that and he's a grammar N*z*I an. If u take his class and need help with grammar or writing a paper utilize chat gpt for help and structure. Will be more than he ever provides
Lots of homework. Really tough grader. Knocks off points to boost his own ego. Do not take this class. He makes it really hard for first year students. News flash: this is a GE class. We are not all in line to become community college history professors.
