good teacher
TERRIBLE TEACHER....seek another profession PLEASE!
Excellent teacher - totally enjoyed his class! Made me love learning history...knows his material very well!
One of my favorite teachers. History has never been one of my favorite subjects, but he made it so interesting that I really enjoyed coming to class every day. He teaches history like storytelling and is clearly passionate about teaching.
I never liked history before this class he is a great teacher
I took him two yrs ago;He is a great teacher. I am in my last yr at Loyola; I learned so much from this prof, that my hst courses at loyola were cake!
he have over head notes but at same time he talks (explains) so either u take notes from overhead and don't listen to him and later on you'll be seeing at ur notes from overhead and think what the heck is this? i don't remember any thing.i don't like his style on giving notes. he should cpy his note
I am not a person that is very interested in history but he made it very interesting to me. I never missed any of his classes and trust me i am not one togo to every class. I would take him if you had to take history.
If you like to write this is the class for you! His tests were easy except for the essay portion. His class wasn't hard but it wasn't easy. If you missed a day, you missed a lot. Overall his class was pretty boring but if you can get through it an easy grade.
I enjoyed his class. You have to come to all the classes to get all the notes you need to past the tests. He gives you the 5 essay questions that he will pick from to be on the test. I think he explained things really well.
Great teacher! Love how he explains in detail, he reviews what he taught us the day before to refesh our memory. Very helpful.
great teacher!! i hated history before this professor. my advice is to do the article he assigns the next class you have and he will love you for the rest of the semester!!
The best teacher I've had at Harper!
Good teacher
awesome
He's the kind of teacher every students asks for. He's easy, nice and very fun. He makes history soo exciting. He gives 6 pop quizzes but you can use your notes and 3 reading quizzes. 2 major tests and a final. Awesome Teacher!
BEST TEACHER FOR HISTORY. He makes history come alive and the work is easy if you have all your notes. Very nice, Very helpful, Easy to talk to. His lectures are fun and the tests easy if you look over your notes. He gives you a break if you talk to him. Has a good sense of humor and is good-looking for his age.
Dr. Dave Richmond was the best teacher i ever had take him if u need a history class.
WOW...this was the only history class I've ever taken that keep me interested...he is a great story teller. You can really relate to the people you're studying...so many times history class just seems like dates and names, but Mr. Richmond made it easy to follow AND enjoy. Plus, he is a very straightforward grader, if you study, you will be prepared for all of his tests/quizzes, and you'll get an A. That is if you study, of course!

This teacher is the ****in shiittt!!! He is not only interesting but totally sympathetic to all needs...He's the ****in**** and gives awesome grades if you even show to make an attempt to understand..HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
He was such a good teacher and knew what he was talking about. He explained everything really good.
Awesome teacher! This guy knows his stuff and is a very friendly person. He keeps you entertained and he cares a lot about his clas and his students. I would definetely recommend him!
Hes a great teacher, if your looking for a good teacher take him. 2 papers for the class and the tests info comes from his lects + some readings
I agree that Prof. Richmond makes history interesting, and that is very important when taking a history class. If you do what he asks you're pretty much guaranteed a good grade... and he also offers a lot of extra credit opportunities. He's kind of a dick to people who are late or need things repeated though, but it's not really a big deal.
Great teacher, easy grader. Too much writing though
I currently am in this class and I LOVE IT! He is easy to follow in class lectures and he makes history fun and easy to understand. He is really funny, easy to ask questions and cares about students imput. He gives study guides before each test, but if you miss a class make sure that you have someone that can give you the notes b/c you'll miss alot
I like this class alot. I learned a lot, and decided that i want to be a history major. That Frederick Douglas thing sucks though...Richmond knows sooooo much, its insane. Alien Richmond Imposter!!!
This class is just too much at once. but it is a grade easy to get if you just to all the work. I mean everything he asks for. This teach also gives alot of homework, every exam is alot of essay writing. Soo its up to you if you like to do alot of work.
He is very helpful and clear. He cares more about your understanding in the material than in the work you put in.
I have hated history my whole life and finally I go to harper in a summer course and he changes my views. He is an amazing teacher so far and i love the way he explains everything. this is the first time i have wanted to go to history class. all the lectures are like 'story time' instead of listening to someone preach from the book... he's great
He is an excellent teacher. If you hate history, this teacher finds a way to may you love it. This is how teachers should be
I LOVED THIS TEACHER SO MUCH I TOOK HIM FOR 2 CLASSES AND HE IS AMAZING. VERY INTELLIGENT VERY FRIENDLY EASY TO TALK TO. LOTS OF WORK BUT IF U JUST READ UR NOTES UR FINE AND PAPERS ARE PRETTY EASY. HE IS A INSPIRATION TO ME CUZ I WANT 2 TEACH HISTORY. VERY GOOD ROLE MODEL FOR A WONDERFUL TEACHER....
He is a fabulous teacher!!!
This guy is amazing, he knows what he's talking about and explains it really well. If you listen in class and study the exams are very easy. No surprises
This guy is great. I like how he lectures instaed of just having us read the text book. He really knows his stuff also. Just do all the work and listen and you'll do fine in the class.
I loved his class! I hated history in High School, all of my teachers were very dry and boring. Best history teacher in the world!
I did not expect to like this class but I really enjoyed it. Each meeting there is about 10 pages of reading and a paragraph response. He's a nice guy, easy grader, and the class is casual.
The best you can ever find. if you want to learn and have fun in the same time this is the right proffesor.
This dude is the man, He tells you what is going to be on the exams so there are no surprises. I really didn't care for History, but when i took him, he made everything connect to which events happened and why. Deffinately recommend him :)
Wonderful, interesting, and one of the best teaching at Harper.
Great Professor- very professional and respectful. He has a wealth of knowledge and shares it at the perfect opportunities. It is up to you to read about 10 pages a night and discuss it in class. He loves students that give their opinions and are unafraid to respond to insightful questions!
He is the best story teller!!! I wish I had him as a fairy teller when I was a kid. His classes are very interesting & have a lot of good information. Tests are not hard, but you have to prepare for them.
by far the best history teacher thus far. everything he teaches in class is worthwhile by showing how policies in the past has affected the world currently. When answering questions he answers them complely without trying to go around the question like other teachers.
I had him several years ago for Latin American History, he made me fall in love with it, and I am still studying it today!
Had him for HST142. Uses outlines and knows the material well. Sometimes boring but also entertaining. Lots of work
Most amazing teacher I have ever had. Sitting through his lectures are like watching a movie, always interesting, never boring. I've always loved History but if you don't find History interesting I highly recommend taking his class because he makes the tests easy to study for and the assignments really aren't hard. Best teacher at Harper
Greatest teacher I have had. He gives great lectures and makes them fun and entertaining. Clever and extremely wise. His lectures are the notes that will help you ace any test. Highly recommend him.
I have taken him for HST 111 and hst 121 and just recently hst 142 this section is a little harder compared to the first 2 sections. But if you attend class everyday you will get a good grade, since 80% of the test questions come from in class. 2 papers for this class, 3 test total and 3 quizs which you can use notes on.
he tended to not to know that in World War 2, that japan did in fact attack us, not just at pearl harbor but in alaska, the Aleutian Island Chain. Yet, overall if you or your family are military try and get a different teacher!! He does remind you alot of when tests are, just remeber to take notes from your book and his lecture and you will be ok
Really good teacher. Likes to have discussions and likes to be informed before giving information.
Great class and teacher. I found the class easy because I actually enjoy history. But you will have 3 tests, 3 quizzes (u can use notes) and 2 main papers. Fun class, recommended. Didn't use the book much except 3 times because the quizes are from 3 chapters on the book.
This guy knows his stuff. He knows how to put things into perspective so you see how things REALLY are. He might seem tough at first but you really do learn a lot. Everything on the tests he tells you during class so make sure you go! It's worth it!
very good. keeps history interesting, tells it more like a story than by timeline. not as concerned by the dates as much as the events. very fair, not too easy, but not very difficult at all.
Best teacher ever had at Harper. Knows the materials extremely well and teaches you more than whats in the textbook! Classes go by really quick as his lectures are really engrossing. Be prepared to take a lot of notes. He frowns upon tardiness; so be on time. Highly recommended teacher.
One of the most enlightening teachers at Harper. Captivates and encompasses you in a world of information that is interesting rather than dry and boring. It was a great class, very interesting, but towards the end it was a bit dry. His tests seem SUPER hard, but their quite easy. Great TEACHER, i wish he taught all my subjects.
Best teacher ive honestly ever had. I believe he makes everything fun to learn. He cracks a few jokes. HW isnt bad at all. He makes it easy to do well.
HE is a great teacher. His lectures aren't mandatory but you need to attend to get an A. There is a lot of work but it is college. If you work hard and come prepared this class will be a breeze. His tests are hard and long but gives you everything you need to prepare for it, everything. Not an easy A but it is achievable if you do your work
Great teacher. I had him for HST 111 and was thrilled to find out I had him for HST 142. Take notes, do the work, get an A. Tests have essay, but he gives you the questions a week before. Papers and assigned readings are interesting and applicable, and the lectures are good. Don't blow off the readings quizzes 'til the last minute!
Really easy to understand, makes class fun--not boring. Gives a lot of notes, but outlines exactly what is on each test so it's not that bad. Tests are pretty easy. Talk in class and he'll like you.
He is very easy to understand and says the same things multiple times for clarity. Although attendance is not mandatory, you HAVE to go to class. Tons of notes and he hands out study guides that you have to find out yourself. Also there is a lot of work especially towards the end including 2 books to read, a research paper, and 3 chapter tests
Mr. Richmond was great. Class discussions were always interesting and engaging. He is an easy grader and the assignments weren't too difficult. Definitely recommend!
A BRILLANT Historian! LOVE, LOVE, LOVE, the guy! His class is so interesting you hate for it to end. I took his 111 class and then took Latin American History (had not really planned on taking that class,) but did just because he was the teacher.
While he might have been a good teacher, he could improve a bit on his personality. I wasn't a huge fan of him because of this. He came off as a jerk at times and even accused me of cheating on an assignment that I completed the right way. At times the enviornment felt like more of a high school enviornment than college.
Mr Richmond is a great teacher. I really enjoyed his class, he knows the subject and kept it interesting. The assignments were alot and the test were easy if you study. Don'miss class, because you need the notes from the lecture for tests. Sometimes I felt like I was back in highschool with him because he treated us like we were children.
Limited participation; easy grader;disengaged with cell phone, writing and drawing; no guidance with help; acted like he did want to be in class; wish his knowledge could have been put to use instead of the class just assuming.
Good teacher. Does not give a lot of work and is a fair grader. He knows what he is talking about so he can clarify if you have any question. I would for sure recommend him.
This is my second time taking a class with Mr.Richmond. Knowledgeable and a great historian. You need to attend class to be sure you have the notes. Tests are based on notes , minimal textbook usage.
Fantastic historian, wouldn't expect to find another more knowledgable professor on the subject. His expertise is conveyed intelligently and very passionately through his lectures and definitely inspires an interest in history for even the most hesitant of students. I enjoyed this class so much I would attend on a Saturday at 8am if I had to.
If you do as he askes, which he doesn't ask much, he gives you an A. Overall, a super supportive teacher and a great class
I got a B in this course, The exams were annoying, obviously were done by the textbook company. The classes consisted of 17 exams, discussion boards, an quick quiz on a book and a term paper. Other than the book being dry and not very interesting, Dave Richmond is a good guy. Horrible textbook, extremely boring and I like history!!
Mr. Richmond is a great teacher! Such a kind, and knowledgeable professor. Classes were fun and always interesting. The only downside was the class has a very large online portion which can suck. If you put in effort, he will put in effort to help you. Always responded to emails promptly and answered every question. DEFINITELY TAKE MR RICHMOND
Take this class for an easy A if you need it for a gen ed. all you have to do is pay attention and do some simple assignments.
I didn't like history classes, but after taking this class I almost became obsessed. He tells history as this super interesting story and is so well knowable on this subject. I will really miss this class. He is a very fair grader! Good sense of humor! If you complete a homework assignment he gives you 100% just for completing it! lots extra credit!
He is probably the best history teacher I ever had.
Great teacher! Great speaker! Attendance is not required, however, make sure u r there every time, because the notes u take are priceless. U won't pass pup op quiz without notes!
I hated history before coming into this class, but he is an amazing teacher. one of the most helpful teachers i have ever had. His exams come from the lectures so dont miss class. And he tells you exactly what will be on the test so it is very east to do well!
Thought this class would suck, but I was fairly interested. You have to take good notes, and study for the test, because there's a lot of essay questions. Not a lot of homework, but you have to make sure you read the books. If you're interested in this class, take it! He was really passionate about the subject
I loved this class and Professor Richmond. He is easy to talk to and answers emails quickly. The tests are easy and so are the pop-quizzes because he does let you use your notes. Im taking a course with Richmond again this coming fall because hes great !
Very easy class. One 5 page term paper comparing 2 presidents, 17 chapter tests, 1 quiz on Fredrick Douglas, and a bunch of discussion boards. Test questions are essentially quotes out of the book. Don't bother reading the book, just use the search feature on the online text while taking it. Tests can be taken twice. Would recommend over in class.
I took the 5 week summer online course and I definitely recommend everyone to take it! There are a lot of tests but it's more tedious than hard. You have two chances to take the tests so it's like an automatic A. The one paper we have, he graded very easy. And there was one quiz that was easy too. Don't read the text, you just have to look it up!
Richmond is a great professor! He makes the long lectures interesting and easy to follow along with. He provides an outline of the lecture so if you get lost you can always pick right back up. The tests are very easy but the online quizzes are more difficult. You'll need your book for these online quizzes.
Richmond is easily one of the most engaging teachers at Harper. He genuinely cares about his students and will make an effort to help you out. His lectures sound more like stories and it makes you want to listen to every word coming out of his mouth. If you don't get sarcasm, well it wont be as entertaining. 3 tests, nothing to big. TAKE HIM!
I just took Proffesor Richmond and I am so excited to take him again next semester, because he is truly a great proffesor! Any questions I ever had I could email him and he was so responsive and clear on all my questions I had. Also his grading is fair, and he gives you a second chance on every test you take for the online course.
I had a good experience in the class. Writing and reading is not that intense. Attendance is not taken. Participation is sometimes required.
It takes a really good teacher to make a boring subject interesting. Richmond tells it all like a story and makes lectures enjoyable. Take him!!!
BEST PROFESSOR AT HARPER. This class is 98% lecture and the test involve everything he says. If you pay attention and take great notes, it will be super easy. There was a lot of content to learn and this class is not an easy A but he made this class fun and it was a great experience. If you don't pick his class then you are missing out!
Professor Richmond is one of my favorite professors at Harper. He explains historical events that are usually hard to understand in a clear way and makes sure that everyone understands the material. The lectures are interesting and exams are only based on lectures. This was one of the classes that I looked forward to.
Professor Richmond is the best teacher I've ever had, its actually hard for me to get distracted. He makes history so interesting I actually leave the class thinking about what he taught us. He has such interesting little stories about every subject and is so funny, I laugh out loud every class. He is not easy tho, you do need to study.
Easiest history class I ever taken. Lots of reading, weekly discussions online, two attempts for each exam and a final essay. You do the homework and exam, you will do well. I took the 8_week online course. Richmond is quick on reply email to questions.
David is wonderful. His lectures follow the guided notes perfectly, he's so easy to understand, very chill, homework is up to 3 small, easy assignments online each week. He offers two extra credit chances, DEFINITELY TAKE HIM. YOU WILL LOVE HISTORY.
David was the best to take for history over the Summer. He makes history super easy to understand and makes each lesson of the day into a story when he teaches. Its a lot of reading but the books are very interesting. If you engage in his classes and answer his questions he will definitely notice you for it.
If you're looking into taking Latin American history than do it with this professor! He makes history so interesting! Definitely my favorite class this semester! His exams are all based on the lectures no tricks and extra information you've never seen. Attend his classes so you don't miss the info, trust me you will enjoy them all!
He is THE man. Best professor ever. I just love his classes. By far the best professor ever at arper college. He makes the subject interesting and funny. Pay attention in class and take notes, you'll get an A. Don't even think. Just take him.
Amazing teacher who clearly enjoys his job. Go to class and take notes. Total of three exams including the final; he provides a very detailed study guide a week before the exam. No textbook but there are novels and questions to go with it. There is a term paper but you can choose the topic and its not due until towards the end of the semester.
Best professor ever, Exams are very easy with detail study guide, Lots of extra credit opportunities, Just make sure you take some good notes that's really helpful in Exams, and don't wait this class are full very fast, Have fun
Richmond is honestly, hands down, one of my favorite professors at Harper College. He's approachable and accessible to his students. He clarifies the ideas, and then he will get you to you think deeply about the concepts. My only regret was not taking classes with him before.
Richmond was my all time favorite professor at Harper College, took both his HST 111 and HST 142. Never uses textbooks but instead uses literature pertaining to the topic we studied. His lectures are amazing and he always has fun in class activities to help students understand concepts. If you take notes and study, the material is easy to grasp.
Even though English is not my mother tongue and I didnt have a clue about American history until this semester, professor Richmond explained the most important concepts clearly and in a way that is easy to comprehend and remember. He is a great story teller, the Connect assignment readings were just dry and boring compared to his lessons.
He's a really good teacher and the course is really as long as you attend class. He gives everything in the classroom not online, so if you miss class and email him he will recommend to see him in person and he will give you what you missed. overall he's really chill and he goes over everything before the test to it really helpful kind of know.
Mr. Richmond is one of the best professors Ive ever had, he does lectures in a way the information sticks with you and is easy to recite after the class is over. Hes very relaxed and fair, but everything is in class rather than online. Attendance isnt mandatory but if you skip you WILL fall behind (I witnessed multiple people). Highly recommend!
This professor makes lectures really interesting and it seems like he has a passion for teaching Latin American History. Although attendance isn't mandatory, it is highly recommended since he doesn't post notes on blackboard. He goes over key points the next time class meets, but I would highly recommend going to class and taking notes. Don't skip.
The best history professor I've ever had! I've never met anyone who has as much knowledge about a subject than Mr. Richmond does. He's so passionate about his career and makes it known. Definitely a must take!
Professor Richmond and Professor Garcia lecture the Hum 105 Honors course. They make the class enjoyable and honestly their bromance is hilarious! The class itself is not hard as long as you do your part. There are readings involved, response papers, very few essays, and participation points.
I loved Professor Richmond, he made history class so interesting and engaging. He was one of my favorite professors at Harper, he explained what he expected on every test, and asked for peoples thoughts often. I totally recommend him!
He was an amazing professor, but sadly the end of the semester of Spring 2020 his class got wrecking ball'd by COVID and we all went online. Sadly it was watching movies and taking notes on terms, but the first half before COVID was amazing.
I usually HATE history but he makes it manageable and honestly makes it seem not so bad :) I am taking him right now during fall 2020 and he is great! The assignments are really easy, just take a lot of time but not too bad where you are stressed. He gives plenty of time to do assignments and is very understanding! Definitely would take again!
I really enjoyed taking Professor Richmond's class. You can tell he loves history and is very knowledgeable. Because of COVID I had to take the class online, but I wish I could have taken it in person.
Besides the Douglass autobiography and readings for your 5 page paper, there is literally no other reading involved. You watch videos/movies about history all semester and fill out easy (2-3 pages) packets. There are two tests (both easy) and one quiz on Douglass (easy). You have to do 100 word posts and 50 word replies each week. Easy A.
The teacher is great and approachable. The class is well structured and has a lot of assignments that will help you be engaged and learn the material. I would definitely take the class again. Great teacher.
Excellent Professor. He is a living book. take this if you want to hear inspirational stories and the history of America.
The rest of the reviews do not represent my experience. This was by far the most time consuming class. He did not teach a single thing, you are on your own. Lots of watching videos, assignments, & just straight up busy work & there is not enough time to do it all. I do not think he understand we have other classes and work jobs. Would not recommend
David Richmond is amazing! I am in the Summer Class & I so far have an A ! He's an easy grader & responds fast. LOTS of work though but gets easier as the weeks pass. 1 Term Paper & 3 tests, LOTS of hw. ALL open book. He really wants his students to succeed. I work 40hrs a week & still found time to finish early. Work hard & you'll get an A.
Prof. Richmond clearly cares about his students and wants us to learn a lot. With that being said, there is ample material provided in his asynchronous class, and the homework is time consuming. It was a time intensive class, but worth it. Many videos to watch, along with worksheets and a final presidential research paper to write. Solid class.
This was one of the best classes I've ever taken and one of my favorite teachers. He makes learning super easy and describes history like a movie. Many times I would forget I was even in class. There are also few assignments, and you get lots of time to work on them. The assignments were also pretty fun and you learn a lot. The class was inspiring.
Hands down the best professor I've had at Harper. His lectures are interesting and make the material relatable to the class. He is flexible and gives clear instructions. We also reviewed at the beginning of class which helped my memory of the material. Participation matters, but as long as you answer one question in each class, you should be fine.
Beyond amazing professor! He will go out of the way to be accommodating and to help you with class material. Very engaging lectures that make it easy to retain information. Easy A as long as you go to lecture. 3 unit tests, no final, and a couple assignments. Super easy and clear grader.
He very organize. he lets you do things on your own.He gives you an awesome worksheet prompt to follow along in the movies that we watched in class. He has an amazing videos to explain each folder before begin of the homework. he respond to her emails super fast. he is also funny when you asked him a questions about line spacing.he grade very fast
Nice guy, busy class. I enjoyed this class overall, however toward the end it became tedious. Kinda bummed that I wrote a 5 page paper and received a 90 with no feedback (but that is just me) Really easy class, just a ton of homework that feels overwhelming at first since it's self paced.
Professor Richmond was very clear of his requirements and expectations of his class from day one. The course I took was strictly online (asynchronous). He was fair on the time frames of work given. I took 2 classes as a first time adult student, and I recommend taking his class.
There is a lot of work to do for this class. The professor is good and responds to emails fast, but there is lots of homework to do. I took 4 classes on top of this class and I spent the majority of my time on this class. You are allowed to work on homework at your own pace but make sure to stay on top of it. Overall fun class, just a lot of work.
His storytelling is great, I just show up to class and review the study guides he makes to get 99% on tests. He makes it seem like it's your responsibility to participate. class is recorded. There are many in class worksheets and discussion posts which he extends the deadlines like crazy. Its great if you like critical thinking and history.
Hey to the person who is reading this review. If you plan to take HST111 with David at Harper, I would highly recommend it. I took the in person 2 times a week and I did fine. Be sure to be there on time. As long as you pay attention, participate sometimes and do the homework, you do great! Keep up with homework assignments. DO NOT PROCRASTINATE!
Richmond was a great teacher. It took me a while to adjust to his lectures because they were 1.5 hrs long of talking and note-taking. There were a couple of group assignments. But it was a lot of content crammed into 16 weeks. I have never studied more in my entire life than for this class. Prepare for a great teacher, but a very heavy workload!
The content itself was not difficult. It is just A LOT of work. I did the 8-week summer class and it was extremely time-consuming. 5 page paper. Written essays with midterm and final exam. It was hefty for me on top of managing other classes. Be sure to have time to spare if you take this class with this professor. He responds to well to emails tho
Overall one of my favorite professors while at Harper. Very understanding and I was not in class for a majority of the classes. Easy on the grading if you put in the effort. Traditional testing, pencil, paper and a scantron with written portion. Study the study guide and listen to the lectures and you can easily accomplish an A.
Amazing lectures, he tells history like he's on a Netflix show breaking down what happened, filled with facts. His wording is precise; going to his class was one of the most enjoyable parts of the day. The stories of early American history stick with you and although the workload is a bit much sometimes, you can't discredit his ability in speech.
Prof. Richmond was fantastic. This course consisted of watching many educational films and then completing assignments. Because of this, Prof. Richmond did not have to contribute much to the course, but he was excellent in his grading and gave constructive feedback on the tests and discussion posts. I would take many more of his classes.
