This was a good class. He teaches by ppt and you can print them off to help study and take notes. Tests are 1-2 ?s then you write an essay on it. However he allows you to make a cheat sheet. Composing (a good) one takes a lot of work but makes you learn. Basically if you do all the work, studying and show up everyday a good grade is possible.
This guy is funny in the sense that "The Office" is funny. Expect lots of awkward pauses and don't be suprised during his lectures when he asks "any questions?" in a whimpy voice after each slide.
Be prepared to write A LOT and in detail for his online quizzes and tests. He wants to know that you read and understood the material. He hands out the quizzes a week before they are due, so this means you have plenty of time to write the ?perfect quiz answers.? His tests are timed at 2 hours. (be organized with notes) A helpful hint would be to w
Mr. Riggs is an amazing teacher. I have taken two classes with him and loved them. The class is a lot of hard work, but you learn from it. Just remember to put everything in your own words.
ENJOYED CLASS:) He knos a lot about a lot.Used 2 b a minister so you know he knows how to talk and is a good story teller which is good when dealin w/history.funny.reasonable w/making up quizzes/tests.tests are essay.he really trains ur critical thinking skills and wants u to piece things together.take good notes, stay organized, and read the books.
He was such a hard grader and in efforts to improve he gave "comments" about my work that were extremely sort and unhelpful. I feel that I received a lower grade than I should have because I didn't know what he wanted!! His lectures were pretty good but he was way too critical.
Seemed like a great teacher, but after spending hours and hours writing notes and getting a 50% on my first quiz I dropped the class. Lacked clarity in syllabus.
Excellent teacher. Very exacting expectations of students on timed essays. Be ready to churn out 3 pages worth of highly detailed essay, fully cited, within 2 hours. However, if you follow through with everything he assigns and take spectacular notes you will be fine (and also somewhat of a hermit).
Summer course includes 4+ exams weekly as well as detailed discussions. 1 of the textbooks is expected to be completely read within the first 3 days of class. You cannot quote on work, you must paraphrase frequently and cite sources. Even if you clearly understand the material and put it in your own words you'll FAIL this course.
Never in the years of highschool and 8 previous college history classes have I ever had a worse history professor and class. I will get an A in this class, the rest of my life and class load will suffer. I frequently correct his grading errors. I'm lucky I know history and am able to correct his mistakes. I cant recommed this class to anyone.
This teachers goal is to make your GPA go down! He doesnt respond to emails or requests for help - he requires essay tests include his interpretation of history and doesn't care of the student understands or not! Worst experience at IHCC ever!
I love history so I took a world civilizations to 1500 class as an elective, worst mistake of my college career. now I get to spend fall semester retaking this class with a Different teacher to replace th F on my transcript. This teacher has unrealistic expectations and you can spend hours on a test and still fail
I have taken three classes with Mr. Riggs. He is a very good teacher and very knowledgeable on the subject. His classes require a lot of work, and a lot of reading. His classes are not ones where one can slack off and expect a good grade. I highly recommend him as a teacher.
I enjoyed his class and found him to be a really pleasant guy. I will say that his grading is tough. Tests are usually done in essay format. He is looking for you to name specific events and if you miss those you'll lose points. This class was one of the few B's on my transcript. If you can't read and write at a college level then avoid this class.
Do yourself a favor and don't take him. He knows his stuff but his teaching style is terrible. You get what you pay for, there is a reason this guy is teaching at a community college, rather than a traditional 4 year college. Also, his test format is odd, the first 8 weeks a class you have one exam, the last 8 weeks you have an exam everyday.
His to 1877.. No cut and paste if you can remember key dates kind of bs history class. This class is all about taking history and making coherent and persuasive arguments. Very fun to think critical about history. His teaching style is great and he has a great sense of humor.I ended up with a D, and its the most satisfying D I have received.
No. Don't take him. Run. Run away now.
David is demanding but not unrealistic. I enjoyed his style of teaching and learned a lot more from him than I initially expected from the first days of class. He doesn't care about dates, he cares about ideas and I think that this is what sets him apart, if not above, the rest.
Great story teller, not the best teacher. Loved class but it contributed little to the tests and quizzes
This class was awful. It is all writing papers and taking notes on readings. An example of an assignment is 6 essays 250 to 500 words a piece, and another example is 2 essays of that length in 90 minutes! If you are not a good fast writer do not take this class. but since this is an online class im not sure how he is for other stuff.
I found him to be very rude. his comments to my papers were harsh and degrading. I suggest picking a different teacher. NO ONLINE COURSES with him either. They are confusing and pointless. I paid a lot of money for books I never touched!
If you like reading and writing a lot and can figure what this guy is looking for, you might do OK. He often requires you contrast 2 sources that happen to say the same thing. I could not figure him out. I think he is a lazy teacher. he could sum up your 800 word essay in one poorly written sentence.
I'm laughing reading all these posts about how he is so hard. Great teacher, great lectures, and you get what you put into the class. Do all the readings, come to class, pay attention and you should have no problems. I came to school to be educated, learn responsibility, and be challenged. If you are a slacker, then you fail this class.
Wow are there a lot of whiners! Yes, you will fail if you don't touch the books. I took this class to learn history and I did. Riggs is fair and super helpful. Loved his lectures.
Took this class in the summer and so it was a little overwhelming but Riggs made it easier. He is easy to approach and very helpful. I don't really like history but his class made me learn stuff.
Pretty easy class. The readings were ok and the online lectures explained main ideas. Nice guy. Cares about students.
Loved this class Worked my butt off but loved it Riggs really helped me out.
Like others have said he is really easy to approach and will bend over backwards to help. Interesting lectures and the assignments are not too hard if you show up to class and do the reading. I loved the class.
it felt like taking two courses, one based off the good lectures, and another on the long readings. You really need to provide details. each exam is 3 questions and worth a total of 50% of your grade, the there's 5 ten point assignments, each 10%. there's a lot riding on each point. I wish I could rate the need of the book greater than a 5.
He was a really nice teacher. His tests were tough, but if you prepared well by listening to his lectures taking notes and reading the text, you will pass. Also, he looks for a lot of details in his tests so make sure to give lots of that.
Don't plan to read, you won't pass. Don't want to show up, you won't pass. 4 missed classes dropped letter grade. 3 large tests are 50% and smaller tests the other 50%. All are 100% essay with no multiple choice. If you can't write quickly you will fail. Good students who put in the work will do just fine but overall pretty challenging.
lots of work; loved the class. Riggs is awesomelistens to feedback & takes into account. Didn't even read textbook past midterm; just focused on lecture termstimeline at the end of chapters to put on the cheat sheets for each exam. Lectures highlight what he thinks is important - include those main point in your quiz. Has great dry humor too
So much reading it was insane. His lectures are really amazing, but he expects you to tie it back to the reading yourself. If I had been tested on his lectures I would have passed easily. Get ready to buy 3 books and only read 1 of them. He can be a tough grader. Be very self-motivated! If you love reading outside of class, take this course!
I learned a lot from him, and his lectures were very entertaining. He is a tough grader but in the end I did get the grade that I wanted. All of his tests and quizzes were essay tests, and they were worth most of your grade. Overall I liked his class.
I took a summer course with Mr. Riggs. I would not recommend taking a summer course if you work fulltime and have a family. That being said, he did send an email prior to the start of class that clearly detailed the course work/volume and his expectations. No one to blame but myself. He is really is passionate about history and it is contagious.
5 Quizzes and 3 Tests, all essay questions; Felt like he was a biased grader with the subjective grading of the quizzes and tests. Not your normal history class of memorizing dates and names.
If you want to pass, it's simple: Read the book, and attend class. You can't pass his class by just BSing your way through it. His lectures are very interesting and he knows a lot of random fun facts to keep things interesting. He's an expert in his field, and listening to his lectures are very important.
There was only 5 quizzes and 3 exams each only 10 points and all essays. This made it difficult to make up if you didn't do as well on the first quizzes. For example he was very unclear about what he wanted and everyone in the class seemed to be struggling, you do have to put a lot in indpendant work in to just achieve a 10/10 on a quiz.
My favorite teacher I have ever taken a class from. I usually hate history with a burning passion but Riggs made the information extremely interesting and easy to understand. There is a lot of reading for the course and you are expected to do work on your own but this is one of the only classes I was always excited to go to. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!!!
If I didn't get graded sure the lectures were interesting but otherwise it was super text heavy & you had to have a photographic mind to remember every detail like he wanted. I don't recommend taking it if you are busy with work & other activities but if you love reading go right ahead. Honestly, no one knew what they were doing in my class!
AMAZING lectures- interesting, thourough, with good flow. Assigned reading perfectly complements lecture material. Fantastic at answering questions and emails. His tests are all essays and focus on lecture material, so attendance is important, plus part of your grade. Clear expectations on essays. No homework besides readings. HIGHLY recommend!
Riggs is so far my favorite history professor. He makes his expectations clear- 4 Absencesletter grade reduction. You will have alot of reading, but not an unreasonable amount. He doesnt cover everything thats on the tests in his lectures so yes you have to read. He does tend to go on rants but thats what made his class enjoyable to me. 10/10
-test heavy -TOUGH grader -ALWAYS looking for more detail -interesting lectures -no extra credit -LOTS of reading -Honestly if you skip, idk how you are going to pass with a decent grade cause I never skipped and passed with a solid C
Riggs is great. if you study you'll be fine. I half assed some essay questions and paid for it. My favorite teacher at IHCC so far, clearly loves his craft
Cool guy, really good lectures but expects too much in essays
Riggs was an amazing lecturer that made me look forward to attending his class, must attend class to do well as he has essay questions based on things covered in lecture, must do all reading as test questions could be on anything, unless you really know history you cannot bs your way to an A. If you love history, this is a great prof for you
By far one of the most interesting and fluent professors I've had in a history class. However, my average reading and homework time per week was around 20 hours. Your grade really does depend on how much work and time you put into the readings. You will get a solid grade if you show up to class, READ, and comprehend the main ideas in his lectures.
If you have a full time job dont take this class. You read hundreds of pagesa night. He is an extremely heavy grader on test and only asks essay questions.
David Riggs was one of the best professors I've ever had. I was never that interested in history until I took this class. His lectures are very engaging and interesting. Yes, he has a bit of assigned reading and if you do the work and understand the main topics, you will excel in this class. Don't expect this class to be an easy A.
David Riggs makes being in class lectures more fun by comparing history to easy to understand things relevant in today's society. I would recommend reading the textbook as well. His tests are all short answer, but only 2-3 questions. Make sure your answers are very detailed, otherwise points will be easily taken off. His lectures are great!
Mr. Riggs gives good lectures, and finds ways to make the topics interesting. Lots of things he talks about shows up on the quizzes, and it's important to do well on these since he only grades you with quizzes and tests. He assigns a lot of readings, and these are important for tests as well. If you do the assigned work, you should pass his classes
He was an amazing teacher who made history fun and made me want to go to class because it was more of him speaking to you rather than a lecture. But it was sooo much work you had to read the textbook and lectures since his quizzes and tests need to be detailed. You can also ask him to explain something if you are confused.
Professor Riggs knows his stuff and his lectures are quite entertaining. Make sure to read the textbook and take good notes because you will definitely need to do that in order to pass the quizzes. Quizzes and exams are all essay questions and be sure to provided lots of evidence.
If you show up for class and read the chapters you will do great in this class. All he asks you to do is read. Every quiz and test an essay. He is very forgiving on spelling. He is NOT a name and date kinda history teacher. I promise you an A if you read and show up for class.
Honestly an amazing teacher. His lectures always inspired me and made me so excited to learn. But, the information from the lectures are rarely on the tests (which is all of your grade- essay tests and quizzes) it is all what you read in the textbook. I personally don't learn well that way and really struggled in this class because of that.
I absolutely hate history but Dr. Riggs helped me through it. He always made sure you knew what content was going to be on the test (which were all essays... ugh, i know), and often allowed cheat sheets. I hate listening to history lectures, but he usually made it bearable, and even entertaining at times.
Professor Riggs class is centred on 3 Essay questions per test. Its tough to get a good grade if you do poorly on one of the tests. Biggest complaint was him giving his take on the news of the day every morning, bashing President Trump & Republicans and pushing his political views on students... If you want a loud liberal professor hes your guy
The amount of reading in the class was absolutely insane. He is really good at giving lectures and is funny and charismatic in class, but I found the amount of reading he assigned impossible. The entire class was based on a series of exams that were based on the reading and lectures. Im generally a pretty good student and I couldnt do it.
If you are good at reading and enjoy a large amount of reading you will be fine in his classes. He grade based on quizzes and exam. I didnt have a great experience but that doesnt mean you wouldnt.
Riggs grades strict and makes you study an 3-4 chapters to make the test on them 2 questions there is so much not knowing what needs to be learned for the actuall class
He is a very good teacher and makes the class interesting. It's not a boring lecture; he includes facts and info about other related things. Great class.
This class isnt an easy one. There is at least 8 essay papers. The only homework is to read like 100 pages a week. He has good stories but I dont recommend his class. His grading doesnt seem very fair. For some apparent reason he makes you stay in the class. He will make you read a lot but ask you one question from it. You have been warned.
Definitely not an easy class. There is homework weekly which is to read part of a book or to complete an entire book within a week. Quizzes don't usually ask more than 3 questions and it is really difficult to receive a good grade on them. Only essay questions so if you don't do well on 1 of the questions you probably won't pass the test/quiz.
Material covered in class and homework was not helpful at all for the test, just really a nit picks grades, i felt like he was looking to fail students instead of see what they were doing right. I got the vibes that he wants you to know hes better at history then you. All in all just a rude professer. Dont recomend
I would give him a 0 if i could his lectures dont have anything to do with the exams
I missed one assignment after acing everything else and got dropped from the class without warning. This guy sucks
Grades way too harsh, multiple people got Fs on multiple assignments despite spending three plus hours a night on the class. Unreasonable grading, boring lectures, and test questions he didn't give us any information about made this class a living hell.
Worst class I have ever taken. Tests are all essay questions, 4 of them and two hours to write as much and as detailed as you possibly can. Wrote the whole 2 hours, cited my sources every paragraph, only to get a half sentence critique on every question and a non optimal graDe. Its not for me fam.
You are only graded on essays and papers. He is extremely tough while grading these too. I spent the entire 3 hours I was given on an essay test and when he graded it he said "you need to go into more detail" and I got a 60%. I had over a thousand words and he wanted more detail. You get 3 hours for 4-5 extremely detailed questions which is SO hard
Literally 7 things went into the gradebook. 3 book summaries, 3 essay quizzes, and 1 cumulative grade for the textbook assignments. All the textbook assignments are on quizlet. You can only use info from the lectures in the essay quizzes. Dont take this class. First professor I have ever not liked.
This professor I'm sure is great for some people but for the average student, definitely not the one to choose. I found that some of the questions on the essay quizzes involved topics that were never discussed in any lecture or reading as well. Definitely don't recommend it if you aren't extremely invested in the topic.
David Riggs is a smart man who teaches and talks alot. He gives little to no guidance on essays and papers. His grading is hard and doesn't help a super ton. Read, read, read you have to really know the material.
Prof Riggs really helped me get through this class with the accommodations I needed to pass. His extra credit work was fun.
The lack a guidance was extremely confusing and the workload was extremely high. I spent over 5 hours a day just reading the chapters to get them in on time and I found out only by looking ahead in the schedule that there was another book to read and 1300 essay in the first 4 weeks of the course along with other weekly assessments.
His grading was super unclear, you could get an F on an assignment simply for not sourcing the book enough times. It was an extremely hard class and he did not explain what he wanted at all. He was also super unhelpful if you tried to contact him. Get ready for a bunch of outside extra work. Don't take in a busy semester, it takes a lot of time.
Didn't communicate with students only send a couple of announcements the whole semester. I tried reaching out and they send me links so he didn't have to use any effort to help.
He provides so much information in his lectures and videos, but also has you reading a textbook and monograph at the same time, and doesn't align the time periods very well in the second half of the course. Not a class that'll grade you on knowledge, definitely depends on how you convey yourself.
I took an online class from him, so maybe an in-person class would've been different. He gave a lot of work to do every week. We had to read two really boring books and write long summaries of them. There are only 6 things graded in the entire class (3 essay tests, 2 papers, and homework). I would definitely avoid taking him if you can help it.
Riggs was a great teacher but the course itself sucked. The pop quizzes & final exam consist of him putting like 3-5 questions prompts on the smart board, you are then required to answer (by writing) them in FULL detail I'm talking 3-5 pages. The good part is about half of them he lets you use a cheat sheet for!!
good professor, as long as you keep up with the textbook quizzes and attend the class and you should be totally fine. the papers are long but as long as you don't procrastinate it should be good.
Grade was based on very few items and all written, timed essays. If that is not a strength of the student it is very difficult to get a good grade. He is looking for certain points to be touched on in great detail so if you miss a point it hurts your grade greatly.
Not a good class for people who aren't confident in their writing, but if you are it's an easy A. The tests are all timed essays with open notes and are completely lecture based. There were some multiple choice quizzes but they were directly based on the textbook and pretty easy.
Be careful and read instructions many times...they aren't very clear. If you think you can get away with not watching the lectures, you're mistaken. It will come back to bite you! This class isn't for people taking a heavy course load. You'll likely get overwhelmed.
This class was outrageously boring, and I felt like I did not learn anything about history in this class. However, the assignments were extremely easy since the only thing I ever got points taken off for was using intext citations as opposed to paraphrasing. Every paper I wrote was at least 200 words under the limit and I still got a 100 everytime.
Very tough grader, a lot of reading, please do not take it from this teacher. A lot of stress for a 4 credit course.
I don't recommend this class if you don't like reading nor hearing a professor talk about things unrelated to the lecture. His instructions were very vague and it was difficult to pick topics to write about for papers. Very stressful class. However, I will say he is a fair grader and will let you know if you didn't meet the expectations.
Class was really easy of you just do the weakly discussion post and find something online to summarize the lectures for you. He mostly grades in completion and doesn't read anything you submit.
dave is a king and always makes history fun. the people who said it's awful have no sense of humor
Dave has been my favorite prof I've had since coming to Inver. The class has a lot of reading and lectures but they're interesting to watch and his in person lectures are very entertaining. I've taken 3 classes of his and would recommend them to anyone :)
Test will be ultra specific on a lot of reading would not recommend
There is a lot of reading in his classes like a whole lot. His papers are long but not difficult and serve more as a reflection of your understanding of the materials. I took an online course so I am not sure how much different the class would be in person. Online there was four big papers. Knowing how to paraphrase content is essential.
Professor Riggs was one of the worst professors I've had as a student at inver hills. You have to rely solely on his long lectures, as he's not helpful through email. I had 100% on all of my papers but still got a B because of an assignment I apparently missed but couldn't prove I did it. Very bland, no sense of humor. Don't take his classes.
