he seems very easy going at first. but his reports and tests are extremely difficult and he really doesnt care. avoid him at all costs. he will confuse the heck out of you.
WOW Rock ROCKS!!! (No pun intended). If you are an RM, take SPAN 302 or any other Spanish class from Brother Rock. You will learn so much about the language-sometimes even more than you want to. He makes you evaluate yourself and is not a big fan of giving constant grades. A lot of the class depends on you. Fun guy-you'll enjoy him!!
Awesome. You can acutally learn instead of just regurgitate. A lot of the class relies on you though. So if you're not a sef-motivated person, I'd take someone else.
Brother Rock is probably the funniest teacher I have ever had. He makes you laugh every class period. He makes the class interesting. Your grade is basically left up to you, so you need to take initiative and go in to see him in his office every once in awhile. That's not a problem because he is so likable you can talk to him like a friend.
The whole "i dont believe in tests and grades" attitude is lame. pretty much its like this-you go in and talk to him a few times a week(equivalent of sucking up) and he thinks youre learning..if you dont he wont give you a good grade. he tries to act like he knows a lot about everything, but in reality he just knows a little about a lot.
What a joke. He is never prepared for class and is easily sidetracked about nothing. Gives grades on bias only. Absolutely no work required. Waste of time and talent.
Very difficult class but you learn a lot. If you're in it for the grade you will hate it because his goal is for you to learn the material rather than just get a grade. Class is all self-motivation so that only those who actually want to learn will do well. He knows his stuff very well and is willing to help, but won't let you cut corners.
Brother Rock is very polarizing, meaning you love him or you hate him. I hated him the first time I had him. He has his own way of doing grades. No tests, it's nice in a way but I he's really into poetry. I hate poetry more so after that class. He's comes off as pretty arrogent. It's sad to say that sucking up to him goes a long way.
Brother Rock is an amazing teacher! I wasn't sure before taking his classes...but I soon came to love it, to look forward to it, and left the class absolutely loving literature like I never did before. What's more, he inspired a passion within me to keep learning it. But students will only learn what they put into it-individual adult responsibility
What a waste of time! Never is prepared for his classes. Never teaches anything. Gives out stupid busy work. Idiotic jokes. If you go to his office and suck up he'll give you a good grade. I've seriously learned nothing from him. It's just sad to be honest. Don't take him...
First time I had him I hated the class, due to the different teaching style. I didn't ever do anything, so no wonder why I hated it. Second time around I had him for advanced lit classes, and I put in the effort and time for myself, and his knowledge was very helpful. If you get to know him you will find he is very brilliant and intellegent.
I would recommend his class to anyone serious about learning spanish. He is hilarious and very knowledgable about Spanish literature and poetry. He will only push you as far as you want to be pushed. Sometimes he is hard to follow, but he does that on purpose to help you think critically. The visits in his office help for specific questions.
The difficult part of this class is pleasing Bro Rock. He is very prideful. And is constantly criticizing, if your cant take criticism this class isn't for you. He does not give you grades during the semester so you can see how you are doing. so it is kind of a guessing game with your grade. But he does teach concepts very well.
He does not care one bit about his students. Would do better in a different field
Can come off as rude and arrogant, but if you stay somewhat emotionally disconnected so as to not let your feelings get hurt, it's a pretty good class. He's pretty funny and loves the content. Pretty clear with expectations... pretty easy class overall.
He is a good teacher, but his style of teaching is really different. You put forth the effort to learn the subject matter and he is there to help you along the way and guide you. But you have to know hat you want to get out out the class. His work load isn't super huge, but something for everyclass, always reading.
I was worried at first...but what a suprise! I LOVED his classes! I looked forward to them, I enjoyed him as a teacher, and he helped to open my mind to completely new ideas and views. A fantastic professor. Go with an open mind, a positive attitude, and work hard with the intent to LEARN rather than just earn a grade, and you should like it.
Hermano Rock is a great teacher. Very educated and has a great sense of humor. He at times can seem like he's being mean, but that is just his style. He's actually a very caring professor if you take the time to meet with him and get to know him.
His teaching style isn't for every student. You have to have the integrity to do the work on your own, but he keeps the class very interesting and I was surprised about how much time he wants to take to help you personally. I think it's important to have a teacher with his style sometime, but it was definitely a challenge for me.
He's probably the least enjoyable teacher I've ever had in my life! Class is awkward and no one wants him to call on them for fear of being made fun of. Overall, his class is for you if you like awkward silence.
Did not feel the teacher prepared himself before class. I'm fine with his teaching/grading style, I noticed a lot of comments had to do with that. I just think he needs to refocus himself on his job, I also felt he came to class grumpy from time to time. Students often felt scared to ask questions. He has potential and I believe in change.
He does want you actually learn and not to just do it for a grade which is good but he has a unique teaching style that takes some time to get used to. His class is easy enough but he is an awkward rude teacher. He makes fun of his students and embarrasses you in front of the whole class, I was always scared to comment because of this.
Bro. Rock is a very intelligent professor with a unique teaching style and sense of humor. He expects a lot and some assignments are hard but not impossible. There are some things in the syllabus that are a little confusing, go talk to him during office hours and he clears everything up. Has a passion for Spanish and expects the same from students.
Brother Rock is very helpful when you go to get help from him in his office. If you want to get an A and work hard you will be able to do so, but it might require some time outside of class talking with Bro. Rock. Brother Rock is very funny and comical once you understand his style. He appears to be serious but he is almost always joking!
Brother Rock is a nice person outside of class and likes to help out, but inside the classroom I felt very awkward. He has a way of only accepting answers that he personally agrees with and will make you feel stupid if you don't feel the same way about something. He really tested my love for Spanish- I almost changed my minor because of him.
Brother Rock is very interesting… He tries way too hard to be funny but he is really just awkward. His class is very boring and I feel like I’m not learning anything. Your opinion doesn’t mean anything to him and he is always right. I would not recommend him.
World foundations-I dont know if he really knows what he is doing. He doesnt give lectures in class and only has us watch videos on ilearn made by another professor. His communication is unclear and the class isnt always sure about what is due and when its due. He doesnt give us a study guide for the tests and expects us to know all the material.
Bro Rock is a nice man and will always help you outside of class but in class the objectives are unclear and he has you do work with a group which wouldn't be bad except you have to write group papers so one person does it all. Pretty confusing class as to what is due when. And you probably won't know your grade until the end of the semester.
I've taken a couple different classes from Rock, and he is one of my favorite teachers ever. Class can be hard if you don't prepare, but he is always willing to help you out outside of class. I think he's hilarious, but his humor isn't for everyone. Very knowledgeable and loves sharing what he knows with you, especially about Catholicism & Span lit
Clearly isn't a history teacher, and constantly informs us how little he knows about certain subjects. You prepare 90% for tests through hw, class lectures are random and vaugue. He doesn't tell you whats on tests. Do the practice quizes that he puts up online- if you memorize that material it helps. Ask questions in class.
Brother Rock was an okay guy. He didn't really have lectures, they were just random and everywhere. Most of the learning is done on your own. He doesn't prepare you for the tests and expects you to know the material.
He was very unclear about class. Could pass if attendance was mandatory. Lectures were pointless. Not a good teacher.
He is a great person, but not a great history teacher. He does not help you prepare for the tests at all. He has even said certain things will be on them, you study them like crazy, and then they are not on the test. Lectures are fairly boring. Expects you to know all the material even though he doesn't do a great job of teaching it.
I had not interest in this class and I hated it more when it ended. Brother Rock got off topic really easily and told you unnecessary facts. He was very rude to the students who asked questions. He didn't seem to know what he was talking about. Grade is based on tests which were easy if you did the readings. Could retake homework assignments also.
Class discussion is solely based on what students need more clarification on. Bro. Rock feels most of the information required for the core class is in the assessments. If students ask questions that are not with the current curriculum, lectures may start to get off topic. 3/4 exams were administered through I-learn.
Hermano Rock is the man! He is misunderstood by a lot of students due to his dry humor. Students who do not understand his sarcasm often leave class offended because they take his comments serious when he is just messing around and trying to enjoy the banter.
I would rather be kicked by a horse than take a class from him again. I regret not going the humanities option instead of this class. Class statistics show 1 A out of 38 students. Stupid hard tests that he doesn't help you on because he doesn't want "to limit your learning to just what is on the test" Absolutely avoid! first B out of 63 credits.
Brother Rock made me cry in class once but I still like him. I personally think he is a genius. Has deep insights and makes me think about certain topics in a new way. He makes our class laugh so hard, but I think many people don't understand his humor. I think he is a good guy and really cares about his students even though it doens't always show
He has his quarks, very sarcastic. And has offended some students, on one occasion he stopped class and took a girls phone away for just having it out. His class could be interesting but you need to sort through a lot his personality. Seems like a good guy but there are better professors to learn the subject from.
No compassion for his students. He will regularly make fun of your intelligence if you don't agree with him. He thinks he knows everything. He will cut you off mid-sentence. You take a bunch of quizzes each week & they are really difficult. His tests are really difficult and if it's a short answer test don't expect anything over a 70%. DON'T TAKE!!
Brother Rock is the worst teacher I have ever had. He try's to be funny and he's not at all. His test are so hard. if you miss class you will fail. I would never recommend him or ever take a class from him ever again. you would be so dumb to take any of his classes.
This course was really hard. I ended up getting a B in it without studying or reading. I think he is hilarious. Other's may not because he is very sarcastic. His lectures are a bit dry. He does know his stuff though and he is definitely qualified to teach this class. I would take him if you are wanting to learn and not just doing it for the grade.
Do not take a class from Brother Rock if you can help it. While he can be funny, overall he is not a nice guy. He regularly makes students feel stupid who ask questions or don't agree with him, and he shows no sympathy or understanding whatsoever. Seems like he hates life sometimes. AVOID
Brother Rock is one of my favorite professors at BYUI he is very misunderstood. My first class with him was very hard and difficult because of his personality but i have had 4 classes with him now and i am really glad i took all of the classes i could with him. His very sarcastic but once you get to know him he is a great teacher and super funny.
This class will humble you regarding your Spanish knowledge. But you will learn a lot. Bro. Rock can seem intimidating, but his class is a blast. Be patient with yourself, try to learn as best as you can, and be ready for hard exams. If you focus on learning, and not just getting an easy A then you will do well. And visit him in his office.
He is the worst teacher I have ever had!!!! He does not clarify things and what he expects from you. The exams are really hard. He is very unkind and rude. You have to work really hard to get a good grade in his class. I would never recommend him or ever take a class from him again. Take the class from someone else. Bro Rock is terrible.
Brother Rock is a very intelligent teacher. He will blow your mind with his knowledge. He will humble you down to the core. Beware of asking questions because he has you struggle to answer your own question before he will give you the right one. Show him that you care for his class and he will help you a lot in return.
Brother Rock is tough, but he really does have a big heart. If you work one on one with him, he will bend over backwards to help you. He's very genuine, and really does care a lot about his students, their success, and their learning. Do the readings, do your best, and meet with him in his office, and you'll be fine.
He is a bit misunderstood. Can be very blunt and sarcastic, can often make you feel stupid for asking certain questions. For this reason I didn't comment a lot. He's funny though and loves helping those who want to help themselves. He gets offended by those who only want to know what they need to to pass the exam. wants everyone to love learning.
He made me cry in class multiple times. While he is very knowledgeable about this subject, he gets off topic and goes on tangents. In addition, giving opinions in his class will result in him telling you how you're wrong. I wouldn't recommend this teacher for anyone. Very sarcastic, and not in a good way. A looooooot of memorization.
Hno Rock is a very funny guy that may come off rude to some. He makes learning Spanish more enjoyable. If you think that you are a pro at Spanish because you are a RM, well the class will make you think again. He explained the why of the language. He is passionate for what he teaches. He is great to help outside of class in his office hours.
He's a great teacher and really wants you to succeed. The course (FDWLD 201) is a lot of outside-of-class work, but that isn't his fault. He makes you laugh a lot. However, there is a quiz at the beginning of every class period, even though attendance isn't mandatory. He drops low grades at the end of the semester.
I love having Brother Rock. If you are easily offended you probably won't like him. He tells it how it is. He is probably the most intelligent professor I've had. He dedicates the entire class in 339 to reviewing homework and helping us think outside the box. He can seem intimidating but he really isn't. Be ready for dry humor and bluntness!
Brother Rock is unfair, condescending, and will publicly call you out for a bad grade. He will not allow you to exit the classroom for any reason during class or he makes a huge deal out of it in front of everyone. He is the know-all-be-all of Spanish literature, good luck analyzing a poem if your ideas and interpretations are different than his.
There is homework for every class. There is a quiz for every class. I am usually a good test taker because I take the time to study. I never got an A on any of the tests. He is straightforward. He can be rude at times. If you annoy him or leave class, he'll draw too much attention to it. He can be immature and rude. Don't take a class from him.
Brother Rock is awful. I don't get offended easily but there was more than one time he made me stir in my seat with an extremely tasteless joke. He made jokes about everything from eating disorders to 9/11. Not kidding. He made a big deal out of anyone that had to leave class early or get up for any reason. Tests were super hard. Boring Lectures.
HW: do the readings & the study guide as prep for the daily quizzes & will give the answers. Tests: all take home & you have 2-3 days to do them, except the final. Usually, they are multiple choice with an essay sect. He's not a fan if you leave in the middle of his lecture, he'll call you out on it. He lets you ask ?'s about the readings.
Brother rock sucks and I dread having to take another class from him this semester. Good luck if you are stuck with him Spanish majors!
You have to understand that unless he's teaching content, he's probably joking. Don't get offended. He cares about his students. Work with him outside class and you'll see. He once chewed me out for skipping class but still let me make up the work and then gave me a craft root beer. "As professors, we care and will help, just talk to us." -Dr. Rock
It really does amaze me all the knowledge he has in that little head of his! But here is the thing... it is his way of the highway. I really did learn a lot about Spanish Literature in his class but I hated HATED writing essays. You better make sure your thesis is something he believes or else you will not get a good grade, even if you support it!
inspirational and intense with very high expectations. Lots of people don't get his humor and they think he's being rude since he's so dry, and he doesn't sugar coat things either. But if you take it all with a grain of salt you will learn a lot from him. You just have to work hard. I have never gotten an A in his classes.
Honestly, I would not take this class from Professor Rock. The lectures are pointless and just repetitive of what you have learned. He allows you to ask questions before in class quizzes (which are daily) are given BUT he goes off on pointless, meaningless rants. You do not usually cover the material that you read about outside of class in class.
Hermano Rock is amazing. He was a little scary the first 3 weeks of class, but he did an awesome job at setting the class tone and expectations. I really grew to respect him and I worked my butt off to do well in this class. He knows so much and is willing to teach you and help you. Great guy. You will do well if you communicate with him!
I'm now graduated, but I took three classes from Brother RockSPAN339, SPAN441 and SPAN490R. I'll be completely honest: When I took his SPAN339 class, I wasn't his biggest fan. I thought he was Mr. Scrooge. But after taking two more classes, he became my favorite professor. He helped instill in me a love of learning. The best teacher I have met.
Bro. Rock was so funny, he was writing the course as we went but I really liked his teaching. He knew his stuff, there was one group presentation at the end, but it got messed up with all the virus stuff. I would recommend this class, just go into it with a open mind.
Here's the thing with Brother Rock: he is very concerned with what will help you learn the most. There's a lot of reviews that complain about the way he lectures or grades your papers, but he's a big believer in independent learning. Be ready to work and think and receive a lot of criticism for your work. He will work with you if you struggle.
He knows a lot, but I'm not convinced he knows how to teach. He assigns homework without instruction, which of course you will lose points for missing things he didn't teach. His jokes are tasteless, offensive and can be rather personal. Students fear his mockery when making comments in class. Say goodbye to your self esteem.
If you have self-esteem issues, do not take any of his classes. He will call you out in front of the class for any reason and will say he is joking after. There is homework due every class. And he only speaks Spanish 50% of the time.
Brother Rock cares about his students & wants to help them succeed. He will make adjustments to the course/assignments if necessary as long as you communicate. Sometimes his sense of humor can be slightly misunderstood by some unfamiliar with his teaching style, but after the first few weeks you can tell most of his comments are just to troll you.
It was disapointing that I wasnt able to share my love for Literatura with Hermano Rock. I have bookcases full of Spanish Classics, but he was so disrespectful to us students that nobody wanted to participate. His demeaning style of lectures isnt condusive to learning. HE DOESNT EVEN SPEAK SPANISH 65% OF THE TIME in a 300 level course. Avoid him.
I'll never take a course from Brother Rock again if I can avoid it. While he is smart and passionate about his field, he is rude to his students, his grading criteria are unclear, and he doesn't grade things on time (at least this semester). The class feels like a war zone sometimes. I'm warning you now. Find another professor, if at all possible!
His grading criteria are often unclear. His jokes are typically at his students' expense. He will mark you absent for any reason - Like being distracted or using the bathroom. He speaks more English than Spanish even in the high-level courses. His classes are manageable but there is no joy to be had even if you love Spanish language and culture.
Not the way literature should be taught. He says any interpretation is good if you can back it up, then mocks students for having a different interpretation than his and marks us down for it, no matter how much evidence from the text we pull in. Singles out students and insults/mocks them in front of everyone. He's not horrible but also not good.
This is a difficult class no matter who teaches, so don't expect it to be easy. Hermano Rock has a unique sense of humor but my whole class loved him. When in doubt, laugh. Participate in class and actually care about the material and you'll be fine. Also make sure to go to the tutors for this course! I wish I went sooner. They're kind and so is he
He is definitely a character, his teaching style is not for everyone and he has a quirky attitude. As a person I like him, and we have had some great conversations. He has strange due dates and times preferring to have early morning due dates, such as having something due at 8:30 am on a Monday. Plan ahead and you will do fine.
Bro. Rock was the worst professor I've ever had. There is very little differentiation between him being rude and him trying to be funny. He does not teach very well. His class was the hardest Spanish class I've ever taken and not in a good way. I think I could've learned a lot in that class, but I really didn't enjoy it because of him.
Avoid if possible! If you can wait for a different semester to take this class do it. The curriculum isn't difficult, this guy is. He really sucked the sanctity, divinity, and fun out of the gift of tongues. His "jokes" are usually at the expense of the students. The way in which he teaches is confusing and seems to set students up for failure.
Brother Rock is an incompetent teacher and a really weird person. In any given class he teaches you will most likely see that a few of his students have dropped the class because they didn't like him. His spanish is poor and he speaks incredibly slow and sounds like he really struggles to get the words out despite it being his job to speak spanish
Hermano Rock, despite being a poor teacher and a very incompetent spanish speaker, treats his students like little children. During class you are not allowed to leave to go to the bathroom or risk losing your attendance points for the day. He makes constant off color jokes and does weird accents and nobody laughs. Avoid taking him at all costs.
Has a unique teaching method and is funny. Ask him questions, he will teach what you want to learn rather then what you have to learn. Tests are weighed more then any other teacher I've taken, but the doable if you study and review what he teaches. I recommend him because he is very knowledgable.
I love Hermano Rock. I was initially scared to take his class because of his poor rating but I'm glad I did. He is very knowledgeable about grammar. If you are struggling, see him during his office hours or talk with him after class. He'll see your effort and be more willing to help you out. Ngl, I thought he was hecka funny too. Very out-of-pocket
Hated him. nothing more to say. gl.
Brother Rock is so funny. Some people find his humor unhinged or harsh but if you take it with a grain of salt and know he's joking like 90% of the time, you'll be okay. He has a very clear syllabus which is nice, he lays out all of the expectations at the beginning of the semester so don't argue those and follow the rules and you'll love him!
Everyone saying that brother rock is weird or a poor professor is crazy. He is funny, very smart, helpful, and wants to help students succeed. however the people in my class that are immature and childish don't like him.
Hno Rock is an amazing professor. His grammatical knowledge of Spanish is extensive, and he is always willing to answer questions. He truly wants to help you learn. He loves telling stories and using visual aids that help illustrate grammar principles as well as engage students in the class.
You've just got to get used to Hermano Rock. He's a fun guy, and his knowledge of Spanish literature, history, grammar, and vocabulary is very impressive honestly!
I highly recommend taking SPAN490R from him. It is a very interesting class, and it is one of my favorites that I've taken while at BYUI. Definitely worth it!
Hermano Rock is the greatest professor of all time! His knowledge of the Spanish language, culture, and history is very impressive. He truly is a master of his craft. 10/10 would highly recommend.
